Boys remain undefeated on wild finish; girls fall to ranked Dodge City

Hays High resumed Western Athletic Conference play for the first time since January 15th by hosting Dodge City Friday night.

Girls

#6-6A Dodge City 52- Hays 26

Hays led just once against the favorited Dodge City Red Demons. A free throw in the game's first minute put the Indians up 1-0. Dodge City used a 20-2 run that lasted into the second quarter to blow the game open.

Hays would go scoreless for a ten minute stretch of the first half.

Highlights

Dodge City remained in command through out the second half leading 42-18 after the third quarter and winning 52-26.

Dodge City remains undefeated in WAC play at 4-0. The Red Demons are 13-1 on the year. Hays falls to 5-10 and 1-4 in conference play. The Indians make a trip to Dodge City February 23rd.

Boys

#1 Hays 44 - Dodge City 38

Hays High had to fight back from a double digit first quarter deficit for a third straight game to beat Dodge City 44-38 Friday night. Hays led early 3-2 with 5:30 remaining in the first quarter. The Indians wouldn't lead again until the fourth quarter. 

Dodge City outscored Hays 14-3 in the first quarter and led by as many as 15 early in the second on the heels of a 20-4 run. The Indians spent the next 20 minutes of the game digging out of that hole.

Highlights

Trailing 26-15 at halftime the Indians outscored Dodge City 15-9 in the third quarter. Hays drew within two points on an 11-3 run at 32-30 but the Red Demons hit a three to go up five at the end of the third quarter.

After being outscored 14-3 in the first quarter, Hays returned the favor by outscoring the Red Demons 14-3 in the fourth. Hays drew within one point at 37-36 with 5:15 remaining. Dodge City missed their five shots allowing Hays to tie game on a free throw with 2:41 left. The Red Demons led one more time at 38-37 twenty second later.

TJ Nunnery provided the last lead Hays High would need with a left corner three pointer at 40-38. Hays did leave the door open by making just four of ten free throws over the final minute of the game.

With the 44-38 win Hays improves to 15-0 on the year and 5-0 in the WAC. Dodge City falls to 9-5 and 3-1. Hays has the next week off before traveling to Colby.

TJ Nunnery led the Indians with 13 points. Jace Linenberger added 11.
