The No. 11 Fort Hays State women's basketball team looks to complete the season sweep of Central Oklahoma Saturday (Feb. 6) when the Tigers and Bronchos battle inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. The women's game will begin at approximately 4 p.m. and will be played after the men's contest.
Fort Hays State (12-2, 12-2 MIAA) is looking to extend its seven-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the MIAA, while Central Oklahoma brings a 9-5 record to Hays.
The Tigers hit 10-of-16 from behind the arc in the second half to pull away from the Bronchos earlier this season in Edmond, 81-60 (12/15/20). Four scored in double figures for the Tigers, including 19 points and eight steals from Jaden Hobbs, the most steals for a Tiger since 2004. Madison Mittie hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points.
Fort Hays State is 13-5 all-time against the Bronchos, including an 8-1 mark in Hays. The Tigers are on a two-game winning streak against UCO, with both of those wins coming on the road. FHSU is 12-4 against UCO under Hobson, including a 7-1 record inside the Coliseum.
Central Oklahoma came away with a win in their most recent trip to the Coliseum almost exactly one year ago in Hays, 77-66 (2/8/20). The Tigers have not lost consecutive home games to the same team since dropping two against Washburn in 2011 and 2013 (12/7/11 & 1/10/13).
Fort Hays State leads the MIAA with 15.9 assists per game, with UCO ranking second with 14.9 assists each night.
Whitney Randall led the Tigers in scoring for the fifth time in Thursday's win over Newman, totaling 16 points and nine rebounds. The senior leads the team in scoring at home, averaging 16.4 points per night.
Cydney Bergmann scored in double figures for the sixth time this season Thursday, totaling 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal.
After starting the year 2-3, the Bronchos have won seven of their last nine games to move to 9-5 overall. UCO was riding a three-game winning streak, including a home win over Emporia State, before falling to Nebraska-Kearney in a battle Thursday night, 75-68. UCO sits just behind the Tigers in assists per game, totaling 14.9 each night. The Bronchos lead the league with an average of 39.7 rebounds per contest. Kelsey Johnson nearly averages a double-double, ranking second in the MIAA in both scoring (19.6 ppg) and rebounds (9.4 rpg). She has seven double-doubles this year, sixth-most in Division II.
After facing off with the Bronchos Saturday, the Tigers will wrap up their longest homestand of the season on Monday (Feb. 8) with a rescheduled contest against Missouri Western. First tip in the women's-only game is set for 5:30 p.m.
