MANHATTAN, Kan. –&nbsp;For the&nbsp;fourth&nbsp;straight year,&nbsp;Voice of the Wildcats Wyatt Thompson has been named the Kansas Sportscaster of the Year as the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association announced their annual award recipients for 2020.

Thompson, who is in his 19th year as the play-by-play voice of the Wildcats, is a six-time winner of the award and ranks second all-time among K-State broadcasters in awards and fourth all-time among broadcasters in the state of Kansas. In addition to his play-by-play duties for Wildcat football and men’s basketball, Thompson can be seen regularly each summer at each Catbacker event across the state in addition to hosting various radio programs, events and programs at K-State and in the Manhattan community. He started his broadcasting career in 1976 as a sportscaster for various high schools, colleges and universities in Kansas, spending time at stations in Great Bend and Abilene. Thompson worked for KAYS radio and television in Hays from 1985 until 1989 where he was the play-by-play voice at Fort Hays State. While in Kansas, he was recognized with the Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB) Play-by-Play Award in 1982 and the Oscar Stauffer Sportscaster of the Year Award in 1989. Thompson, also the 2011 recipient of the Hod Humiston Award from the KAB, came to Kansas State in 2002 from Colorado State, where he was the play-by-play voice for CSU's football and men's basketball teams for five years. An accomplished professional, Thompson won the Colorado Broadcasting Association award for best play-by-play in 2000. Sullivan's time as a Tiger began on Monday, January 11. "We are excited to welcome Trevor Sullivan to the FHSU volleyball staff," said Wood-Atkins. "As a volleyball player, Trevor was recruited out of high school in Illinois to play collegiately at Grand View University as a middle blocker. His coaching has been influenced by some incredible volleyball minds. "His most recent stint was working in the Coaching Education Department at USA Volleyball while coaching with the nationally ranked volleyball club, Colorado Juniors. I am excited for the perspective and experience he will bring to both recruiting and our front line." Sullivan comes to Hays after spending two seasons as head girls volleyball coach at Palmer Ridge High School in Monument, Colo. He led the team to the Class 4A state tournament each year, winning two regional titles and finishing the 2019 season as state runner-up. The Bears were 39-18 in his two seasons at PRHS. He was named the 5A/4A Volleyball Coach of the Year by&nbsp;Gazette Preps&nbsp;after the Bears' run to the state championship game in 2019. Sproles is the sixth K-State player or coach to be selected to college football’s highest honor and the third in the last 10 years. He joins former linebackers Gary Spani (Class of 2002) and Mark Simoneau (Class of 2012), as well as coaches Lynn “Pappy” Waldorf (Class of 1966), Charles Bachman (Class of 1978) and Bill Snyder (Class of 2015).

Joining Sproles as players in the Class of 2021 are Harris Barton (OT, North Carolina), David Fulcher (DB, Arizona State), Dan Morgan (LB, Miami), Carson Palmer (QB, USC), Tony Romo (QB, Eastern Illinois), Kenneth Sims (DT, Texas), C.J. Spiller (RB/KR, Clemson), Aaron Taylor (OT, Notre Dame), Andre Tippett (DE, Iowa) and Al Wilson (LB, Tennessee). Coaches selected for enshrinement are Rudy Hubbard (Florida A&amp;M) and Bob Stoops (Oklahoma).

Of the 5.47 million individuals who have played college football since Princeton first battled Rutgers on Nov. 6, 1869, only 1,027 players and 221 coaches have been immortalized in the Hall. In other words, only two one-hundredths of a percent (.02%) of those who have played or coached the game have earned this distinction.

The 2021 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be officially inducted during the 63rd&nbsp;NFF Annual Awards Dinner on December 7, alongside the 2020 Hall of Fame Class as this season’s event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A 2003 First Team All-American and three-time All-Big 12 performer, Sproles held 28 school records at the time of graduation, 21 of which still stand 16 seasons after his playing days. The Olathe, Kansas, product rushed for 4,979 career yards, which ranks third in Big 12 history and is nearly 2,000 yards more than any other player in K-State history. Sproles, who finished fifth in the 2003 Heisman Trophy voting and third in the Associated Press Player of the Year voting that same season, was a three-time All-American.

Sproles played on some of the most memorable teams in K-State history as the Wildcats went 22-6 over his sophomore and junior seasons, including the 2003 campaign when Kansas State won its first Big 12 Championship with a 35-7 upset over top-ranked Oklahoma.

Sproles hold three of the top five marks for single season rushing yardage in school history, including the top mark of 1,986 yards in 2003. An accomplished receiver and returner, Sproles is also the school’s career record holder for all-purpose yards (6,812) thanks to 2,735 yards in 2003, also the top total in school history for a season. His career all-purpose yardage total ranked fifth in NCAA history at the time of his departure, while his 2003 output was fourth.

Following his time in Manhattan, Sproles enjoyed a 16-year NFL career with the then-San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles.

A fourth-round pick by San Diego in 2005, Sproles became an instant fan favorite, eventually setting the Chargers’ franchise record for career kickoff-return yards. In 2011 with the Saints, Sproles set the NFL single-season record for all-purpose yardage at 2,696 yards, a record that still stands.

The likely No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA draft took just three shots in 31 minutes and had six rebounds, five assists and a block with two turnovers.

Mike McGuirl scored 15 points and DaJuan Gordon had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (5-8, 1-4).

Oklahoma State’s previous four Big 12 games were decided by a single possession or in overtime and by a total of 12 points.

After just a one-point lead at halftime, Lincoln used a 12-3 run and a 16-6 run to pull away from the Tigers in the second half to remain unbeaten on its home floor this season. FHSU moved to 3-6, while Lincoln improved to 6-2 on the season.

Lincoln held leads of seven points four times early in the game before FHSU used a 10-2 run to vault in front 20-19 with 8:14 remaining before halftime. Eventually FHSU held a five-point lead, its largest of the game with 3:40 remaining before the break, but Lincoln stormed right back with an 8-0 run to take the lead again. Lincoln went into the locker room holding on to a 37-36 lead.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5865">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;nearly had a double-double at the half with nine points and 10 rebounds. Much like their loss at Central Missouri on Thursday night, a rash of turnovers was the undoing of the Tigers. 🏀 Tiger men come up short at Lincoln

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The message from Kansas coach Bill Self to his team was simple: You played lousy for 20 minutes and you’re still in the game, tailing Oklahoma by just two points at halftime.

Quite the compliment, in a roundabout way — and an odd but effective way to provide some confidence.

The sixth-ranked Jayhawks leaned on that message throughout the second half Saturday, turning their showdown with the short-handed Sooners into a nip-and-tuck game that went down to the end. David McCormack hit the&nbsp;<a href="https://bit.ly/2L9wGZK" target="_blank">clinching short hook shot</a>&nbsp;with 12.8 seconds to go, giving him 17 points and Kansas a hard-earned 63-59 victory.

“When coaches say they didn’t play well,” Self said, “it makes it look like you’re not giving the other team credit. I think Oklahoma was prepared and had a lot to do with us not playing well, but I thought we absolutely stunk the first half.”

“You know,” Self said, “considering we didn’t really make any free throws and didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, we came out and played better in the second half. ... It’s a pretty good win considering they got easy stuff and we didn’t.”

Ochai Agbaji added 14 points and Jalen Wilson had nine points and 11 rebounds, helping the Jayhawks (10-2, 4-1 Big 12) avoid back-to-back losses in Allen Fieldhouse for the first time since their first season under Roy Williams in 1988-89.

The Sooners (6-4, 2-3), playing without Brady Manek and Jalen Hill because of COVID-19 protocols, took a 57-56 lead when Austin Reaves hit a jumper from the free-throw line with 2 1/2 minutes to go. But McCormack scored over Oklahoma’s Kur Kuath to give Kansas the lead back, and Wilson’s 3-pointer made it 61-57 with 1:26 to go.

Oklahoma had a chance when Kuath dunked Alondes Williams’ miss with 37 seconds left, and coach Lon Kruger elected to play defense rather than foul. But after working the shot clock down, McCormack got his clinching shot to go.

“Wish we could have held it off,” Reaves said, “but it’s sports. Things happen.”

Reaves had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the Sooners, who have lost 20 straight to the Jayhawks in the Phog. Williams and De’Vion Harmon added nine points apiece.

“Both teams played their tails off,” Kruger said. “We have to keep getting better and I think today will help us do that, even though we’re extremely disappointed we didn’t finish it off.”

And almost from the start, there were signs the Jayhawks — still missing backup guard Bryce Thompson to a back injury — were in for another tough afternoon.

They committed a flurry of early turnovers, including six by Wilson in the first half alone. They struggled again from the 3-point line. They were even edged on the boards, where Kansas historically has been tough to beat.

If not for an 11-0 run by the Jayhawks midway through the first half, the Sooners would have enjoyed quite the halftime cushion. But a lull of their own allowed Kansas to get back in the game, and it took Reaves converting Tyon Grant-Foster’s turnover in the final 15 seconds into a layup at the other end to give the Sooners a 33-31 advantage.

Despite going 8 1/2 minutes without a field goal, the Jayhawks were still tied 49-all with just over 5 minutes remaining.

Garrett and Wilson, both of whom struggled to get shots to go, began to come through in crunch time. Garrett’s driving layup gave Kansas a 56-55 lead, and Wilson drained a 3-pointer from the wing to make it 61-57 and provide a cushion.

McCormack provided the baby hook moments later to seal the win.

“Coach always says that real teams grow as the season goes on and that’s definitely how were doing,” he said afterward. “We know how each other plays, now we just have to play to each other’s strengths and how coach wants us to play.”

Oklahoma announced Manek and Hill would miss the game about 45 minutes before tipoff. Elijah Harkless started in place of Manek, who is the team’s second-leading scorer at 13.2 points per game. Manek and Hill, who is averaging 3.7 points off the bench, must undergo another series of COVID-19 tests before being cleared to return to the team.

🏀 McCormack scores 17 as No. 6 Kansas edges Oklahoma

The Tigers (6-2, 6-2 MIAA) had five score in double figures for the first time this year and committed a season-low eight turnovers en route to their highest scoring game of the season.

The offense ran through freshmen post players&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5854">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5856">Jessie Sallach</a>&nbsp;in the first half, with the duo combining for 26 points before halftime. Hollenbeck was 6-for-6 from the line and 3-of-4 from the floor in the opening half while Sallach hit 7-of-11 shots to eclipse her career high in less than 20 minutes. Lincoln (0-7, 0-7 MIAA) jumped in front in the first minute, but the lead would be short-lived. FHSU trailed for just 77 seconds before a 3-pointer from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5847">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;pushed the Tigers in front for good. The Blue Tigers kept things close, but three layups in the final 2:11 of the quarter from Sallach put the Tigers up 22-18 after one.

Sallach kept things rolling in the second quarter, scoring the first six points for the Tigers. The senior took the lead with a first period takedown and tacked on numerous points in the final period with two nearfalls. No. 9 Jones kept things going with a third-period pin at 184 pounds. SALINA – The TMP-Marian girls and boys basketball teams each
earned their fifth win over the season Friday in a doubleheader sweep of Sacred
Heart in Salina.

The TMP Lady Monarchs opened the game on a 16-0 run and
never trailed as they cruised to the 60-33 win.

TMP’s Emilee Lane scored nine of her team-high 17 points in
the first quarter as the Monarchs built a 17-4 lead. 

The Monarchs held Sacred Heart to just two field goals over
the first four and a half minutes of the second quarter as TMP built a 22-point
lead at 30-8.

The Knights briefly cut the lead to 18 before TMP finished the
first half on a 7-0 run to lead 37-13.

TMP extended their lead to 30 early in the second half at
42-12.

Sacred Heart was able to close the gap to 21 lead in the
third quarter but the Monarchs pulled away as they improved to 5-1 on the
season.

Lane finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds for TMP. Kyleigh
Allen added 16 and Sophia Balthazor finished with 11.

The TMP boys, playing without two of the starters, were able
to rally from down five in the second half to knock off the Knights 54-47.

After falling behind by six to open the game the Monarchs scored
six straight to tying the game at six.

The game would be a back-and-forth affair the entire time
with the two teams combining for 14 lead changes and three ties.

TMP trailed 8-6 after the first quarter and 16-14 at the
break.

In the second half Sacred Heart saw their largest lead of
the game at five at 22-17. The Monarchs were able to erase the deficit and even
take the lead at the end of the quarter at 35-34. Dylan Werth scored six
straight for the Monarchs to end the quarter.

With the game tied again, this time at 38, TMP’s Jackson Schulte
pulled down an offensive rebound and followed it home putting the Monarchs up
two and sparking a 10-2 run and giving TMP the lead back. A lead that they
would never give up again as they claim the 54-47 win.

Schulte had 16 for TMP. Werth added 13 points and nine
rebounds.

take the lead at the end of the quarter at 35-34. Dylan Werth scored six
straight for the Monarchs to end the quarter.With the game tied again, this time at 38, TMP’s Jackson Schulte
pulled down an offensive rebound and followed it home putting the Monarchs up
two and sparking a 10-2 run and giving TMP the lead back. A lead that they

The Indians eventually trailed by nine at halftime and the deficit down to seven midway through the third quarter at 27-20. Hays missed shots on their next two possessions that would have brought the game within five points and Liberal took advantage by going on a 13-0 through the midway point of the fourth quarter.

Liberal's Aubrey Warden went for 18 points and 14 rebounds in her team's 42-26 victory over Hays. The Newman University signee had double figure rebounds in each of the matchups.&nbsp;

Hays falls to 1-5 and 0-2 in Western Athletic Conference play. Liberal improves to 6-0 and 2-0.

Hays scored on the first possession of the game in Liberal and led wire to wire, opening 2021 with a 72-45 victory. The Redskins got within two just one time at 4-2 and never got any closer.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tommy Lasorda, the fiery Hall of Fame manager who guided the Los Angeles Dodgers to two World Series titles and later became an ambassador for the sport he loved during his 71 years with the franchise, has died. He was 93. 

The Dodgers said Friday that he had a heart attack at his home in Fullerton. Resuscitation attempts were made en route to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday. Lasorda had a history of heart problems, including a heart attack in 1996 that ended his managerial career.

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Fort Hays State dropped its second-straight road contest on Thursday night (Jan. 7) with a 71-64 setback at Central Missouri. The Tigers trailed by 11 at halftime and had two second-half surges that came up short as they move to 3-5 on the season. UCM moved to 2-6.

The Tigers put themselves in a hole early in the game when a rash of careless turnovers helped fuel a 17-2 run by the Mules in the middle of the first half after the score was tied 12-12. Six of the Tigers' 10 first-half turnovers came during that run. Four of the turnovers in the run turned into 11 points for the Mules. UCM had 15 first-half points off turnovers, taking a 38-27 lead into halftime.

The Tigers made a quick run at the Mules early in the second half as&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5865">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;scored 10 of FHSU's first 12 points out of the break. A 12-4 run by the Tigers to open the half had the UCM lead down to just three with 16:27 to go, but Jalen Blaize of UCM put an end to the threat by making a pair of 3-point field goals on consecutive trips to push the lead back to nine. A layup just a few ticks past the 15-minute mark had the lead right back to 11 for UCM, the margin it led by at the half. The lead teetered between 13 and seven points for the Mules over the next five minutes, but the Tigers started to threaten once more between the 10 and 5-minute marks. UCM led by 11 with 9:26 to go, but the Tigers held the Mules scoreless over 4:42 of action, trimming the lead down to just two with a 9-0 run.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5862">Gilbert Peters</a>&nbsp;had five of the nine points in the Tiger run, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5864">Alvin Thompson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5859">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;each pitched in two each. Central Missouri snapped the 9-0 run by making a free throw with 4:44 to go, but FHSU squandered two straight possessions to either tie of pull within one by turning the ball over back-to-back possessions. UCM pushed its lead back to five after the latter of the Tiger turnovers and FHSU cut the lead to three one more time. However, a 5-0 burst pushed the UCM lead to eight with 1:30 to go in the game, which was too much for the Tigers to overcome. FHSU cut the lead to five twice more before the final margin settled at seven. Vitztum scored 17 of his team-high 22 points after halftime. He was just one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with a team-best nine. Peters had an efficient night with 13 points, going 5-of-6 from the field and 3-of-5 at the free-throw line. He added six rebounds. Thompson was the only other Tiger in double figures for scoring with 11. Hammeke led the Tigers in assists with four. Ja'Cor Nelson led the Mules with 22 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field. Blaize added 20 points and Gaven Pinkley had 13 for UCM. Ultimately FHSU finished with a season-high 18 turnovers, which led to 22 points for UCM. UCM finished at 54.7 percent shooting from the field, while holding FHSU to 44.7 percent. FHSU was 18-of-24 at the free-throw line, making nine more free throws than UCM, but UCM had eight more field goals in the game to make up for the deficit in free throws. The Tigers face another challenging road contest on Saturday when they travel to Lincoln University (5-2) in Jefferson City, Mo. Tipoff is set for 3 pm at Jason Gym, which follows the women's contest at 1 pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A layup just a few ticks past the 15-minute mark had the lead right back to 11 for UCM, the margin it led by at the half. The lead teetered between 13 and seven points for the Mules over the next five minutes, but the Tigers started to threaten once more between the 10 and 5-minute marks. UCM led by 11 with 9:26 to go, but the Tigers held the Mules scoreless over 4:42 of action, trimming the lead down to just two with a 9-0 run.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5862">Gilbert Peters</a>&nbsp;had five of the nine points in the Tiger run, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5864">Alvin Thompson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5859">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;each pitched in two each. Central Missouri snapped the 9-0 run by making a free throw with 4:44 to go, but FHSU squandered two straight possessions to either tie of pull within one by turning the ball over back-to-back possessions. UCM pushed its lead back to five after the latter of the Tiger turnovers and FHSU cut the lead to three one more time. However, a 5-0 burst pushed the UCM lead to eight with 1:30 to go in the game, which was too much for the Tigers to overcome. FHSU cut the lead to five twice more before the final margin settled at seven. Vitztum scored 17 of his team-high 22 points after halftime. He was just one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with a team-best nine. Peters had an efficient night with 13 points, going 5-of-6 from the field and 3-of-5 at the free-throw line. He added six rebounds. Thompson was the only other Tiger in double figures for scoring with 11. Hammeke led the Tigers in assists with four. Ja'Cor Nelson led the Mules with 22 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field. Blaize added 20 points and Gaven Pinkley had 13 for UCM. Ultimately FHSU finished with a season-high 18 turnovers, which led to 22 points for UCM. UCM finished at 54.7 percent shooting from the field, while holding FHSU to 44.7 percent. FHSU was 18-of-24 at the free-throw line, making nine more free throws than UCM, but UCM had eight more field goals in the game to make up for the deficit in free throws. The Tigers face another challenging road contest on Saturday when they travel to Lincoln University (5-2) in Jefferson City, Mo.
