⛳ Krannawitter leads HHS golfers in Liberal

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- In accordance with updated health protocols issued by the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., Sporting Kansas City announced today that home matches at Children’s Mercy Park will return to full capacity beginning May 29 when the club hosts Houston Dynamo FC.

Upon returning to full capacity, Children’s Mercy Park will continue to adhere to a number of health and safety protocols, including mobile entry, cashless payments, hand sanitization dispensers throughout the stadium and increased cleaning and sanitization before, during and after matches. Mask wearing is strongly encouraged but not required under the Unified Government’s latest guidelines, and Children’s Mercy Park will offer a designated seating section where masks will be required for all ticket holders within that area.

Sporting’s home match on May 29 will see the club honor frontline healthcare workers by giving 1,000 tickets to local medical professionals. The occasion will serve as the newest initiative from “<a href="https://www.sportingkc.com/post/2021/03/08/sporting-kc-launches-community-campaign-partnership-victory-project-and-children-s">A Force for Good</a>,” a newly launched campaign in which Sporting and The Victory Project join forces with local partners to serve the community. Additionally, Sporting will join a nationwide effort led by the White House COVID-19 Response Team by offering a 30% discount to vaccinated fans for in-stadium merchandise purchases at a June home match to be determined.

“We are excited to welcome all of our Season Ticket Members and passionate supporters back to Children’s Mercy Park and honor frontline workers who have sacrificed so much for the good of our community,” said Sporting Kansas City President and CEO Jake Reid. “Our transition to full capacity will be made in accordance with local health mandates&nbsp;and we encourage guests to continue wearing masks. HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State head women's basketball coach Tony Hobson has announced the signing of Kia Wilson, a Division I transfer from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Wilson will join the Tigers with three years of eligibility beginning in the fall of 2021. A Manhattan, Kan. native, Wilson appeared in 39 games in two seasons as a Maverick, averaging 4.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. A 6-1 forward, Wilson scored in double figures six times, including a career-best 13 points at Purdue-Fort Wayne as a freshman (2/22/20). She corralled at least five rebounds nine times, including a personal-best nine in her hometown at K-State (11/8/19). Kia, pronounced KI-ah, accumulated 174 points, 106 rebounds, 16 assists, 23 blocks and 12 steals in her time at Nebraska-Omaha. She hit 47.6 percent of her shots (69-of-145). Wilson was a four-year letterwinner at Manhattan High School before graduating in 2019. She averaged 13.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, 2.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game as a senior, going on to earn numerous honors, including first team all-conference, second team Class 6A All-State, KBCA All-Star status and all-tournament team recognition at the Hays City Shootout. Wilson concluded her high school career ranked fifth all-time in scoring and rebounding, second all-time in blocks and as the record holder for field goal percentage at MHS. She helped the Indians win the Kansas Class 6A State Championship in 2017 as a sophomore in addition to a pair of sub-state championships and multiple Centennial League titles. She was an honorable mention Kansas Class 6A State all-tournament team selection as a sophomore and junior. Other honors include Mid-America Classic all-tournament team as a junior, Hays City Shootout all-tournament team honors as a sophomore and all-Flint Hills second team honors as a sophomore. Wilson also lettered in volleyball, earning Kansas Volleyball Association All-Academic first team honors. She was a member of the National Honor Society while earning multiple academic honors, including the distinguished junior class athlete award and being named KMAN Student-Athlete of the Week as a sophomore. High School held their annual academic and athletic awards ceremony Monday
night. Maia Lummus is the Jack Roberts Female Athlete and Dalyn Schwarz the
Swim Carpenter Smith the Outstanding Male Athlete.

The
Jack Roberts Female Outstanding Athlete Award is named in honor of Jack Roberts
who was a principal at Hays High. Mr. Roberts was a strong advocate for young
women in sports.

The
Swim, Carpenter, Smith Memorial Award is in memory of three Hays High students
that were killed in a car accident during the sophomore year.

Frank
and Barb Leo were named the Debbie Brungardt Fan of the Year recipients. Cayden
Sanders was the student honoree and Dave Staab from the faculty.

The
Fan of the Year Award is named in honor of former HHS student Debbie Brungardt
who lived her life with a physical disability but attended nearly every event
that involved the Indians. The Fan of the Year award is selected by the HHS
coaches and presented annually to an adult community fan, a student fan and a
USD 489 Faculty/Staff member.

- TMP-Marian boys golf team placed three in the top-10 at Monday’s Mel
Schremmer Phillipsburg Invitational. Jackson Schulte shot a 12-over-par 80,
Landon Rozean an 82 and Pake Dewey an 86. The three finished fourth, fifth and
ninth respectively. Schulte and Rozean finished first in the two-man standings.

⛳ Monarchs place three in top-10 in Phillipsburg

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball announced the addition of Geoff Hamperian for the 2021-22 season. Hamperian, native of Morgantown, West Virginia, is a transfer from Youngstown State University where he played for three seasons. He is a 6-foot, 4-inch guard. Hamperian played in a total of 55 games at Youngstown State. In 2020-21, he played in 25 games. He scored a season-high 11 points at Northern Kentucky and pulled down a season-high seven rebounds at Robert Morris. In 2019-20 he scored in double figures three times with 14 points as his season high against North Carolina Central. Hamperian scored a total of 137 points for the Penguins, while shooting 47.7 percent beyond the 3-point line. He was a 44.1 percent shooter for YSU overall. Hamperian was a three-time all-conference selection at University High School, scoring 980 career points. He averaged 16 points and seven rebounds per game his senior year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 Tiger men announce addition of Geoff Hamperian

The athletic department has announced the appointment of&nbsp;Adriana Leake&nbsp;as the next head coach of Thresher volleyball.

Leake becomes the ninth head coach in the history of the program, dating back to 1973.

“Adriana rose to the top of a very strong candidate list,” said 
Bethel Director of Athletics Tony Hoops. “She was well referred from the
 beginning of our search process and exceeded expectations during the 
interview process.”

Leake comes to Bethel after spending the past two seasons as the head coach at Wichita Northwest High School.

The Grizzlies won a Kansas 5A Sub-State Championship this season, with Leake named the Wichita Area Co-Coach of the Year by the&nbsp;Wichita Eagle&nbsp;following her team’s efforts this year.

“I am honored to be named head coach of a program with a history as rich as Bethel volleyball’s,” Leake said.

“When I walk into the gym and see those banners from years ago, I’m 
excited about the opportunity to breathe new life into the Bethel 
College volleyball program,” she continued.

“There’s work to do, but I know we can build a program that the community and alumni will be proud of.”

Leake has previous experience with the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, both as a coach and a player.

Originally from Texas, Leake became the all-time record holder for 
career assists at Sterling (Kan.) College with 4,264 from 2009-12.

She was also a four-time All-KCAC player during her career, including a 1st-Team appearance her senior season.

After graduating from Sterling in 2013, Leake joined the staff as an 
assistant coach during the 2013-14 and 2015-16 seasons. She also spent 
time as an assistant at Friends University during 2018-19.

“Adriana is very familiar with small-college volleyball and has connections all across the country,” said Hoops.

“Her work at Northwest speaks for itself. We believe she is a rising 
star in the volleyball coaching profession and we are extremely 
fortunate to have her lead Bethel College volleyball going forward.”

Leake also brings connections to Bethel on the club volleyball 
circuit. She is currently part of the Wichita Legacy club organization, 
helping develop players at all age levels in the sport.

“Adriana’s demeanor is very similar to past legendary coaches who 
served as the foundation of Bethel College volleyball,” Hoops said.

“Her confidence, knowledge, communication and professionalism make 
her the perfect fit to take over the proud Bethel volleyball 
[tradition].”

Leake has a B.S. in business administration from Sterling College and an M.S. in education from Fort Hays State University.

FHSU grad takes reins of Bethel volleyball program

After
months of working with state government, education and health leaders, schools
in all 50 states have been given the go-ahead to resume high school sports at
some level of competition. Schools in the District of Columbia were the last to
receive the green light on April 1. This is great news and signals that a
return to normalcy may be on the horizon by the time schools begin sports and
activities this fall.

Unfortunately, there is an ever-increasing issue that could put a kink
in the return-to-play plans in Kansas and across the country – a shortage of
officials, as in referees and umpires, that borders on catastrophic in some
sports and in some parts of the nation.&nbsp;&nbsp;


The
shortage of officials in high school – and middle school – sports has been a
growing concern for several years; however, the COVID-19 pandemic has moved the
issue to heightened levels. 

In
some cases, schools that have waited months and months to “play ball” have had
to cancel games or reschedule games. There are so many contests occurring, with
some states currently playing football and other sports they were unable to
offer last fall, coupled with regular spring sports now underway, there simply
are not enough people to officiate all scheduled games.

According to the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO),
registration of officials across the country is down about 30 percent this
year. In Kansas from 2019-20 to 2020-2021 we saw a 14% reduction of officials
registering.&nbsp; Five hundred-twenty fewer officials
registered in 2020-2021. In the past 10 years – since 2010-2011 we are down 26%
- 1092 few officials registered in 2020-2021. Sports with the largest percent
decrease were basketball and wrestling at approximately 17% reduction. 

Tennessee and Georgia have reported declines in baseball umpires. In one
county in Georgia, one middle school had to cancel its baseball season due to a
lack of umpires.

In
some cases, the number of available officials has declined due to
health-related reasons – people opting out this year because of the pandemic.

As vaccinations increase and the optics improve, many of
these individuals hopefully will return. 

For
other officials, however, the pandemic was a secondary concern compared to the
verbal abuse they receive from fans – mostly parents. It is particularly hard
for rookie officials to overcome the verbal shots they hear from parents. In an
article in the Salt Lake City Deseret News, Jeff Cluff, assistant director in
charge of officials for the UHSAA, had the following to say about unruly fans
in his state: 

“Parents are out of control ... Because of the club and super-league
culture, they think these games mean everything; we don’t look at it that way
in high school. Kids are learning, the officials are learning, the coaches are
learning. We have lots of people who are interested in officiating. If we could
keep these officials, we’d be fine.”

Schools in Kansas need two things: 1) more individuals to consider
officiating high school sports and 2) an improvement in fan behavior so that
officials don’t have to deal with verbal abuse and can feel good about
continuing to officiate. Despite the fun and rewards that come with officiating
high school sports, no one wants to continue if they are continually berated by
fans.

The NFHS has been actively
recruiting officials for four years through its #BecomeAnOfficial campaign.
More than 50,000 individuals have expressed interest in officiating during this
time. However, more individuals are desperately needed to keep the games going
for the millions of students in middle school and high school sports. Anyone

More
importantly, let’s do all we can to keep the men and women who are currently
giving of their time to officiate middle school and high school sports. The
next time you think about yelling at the referee during a high school contest,
DON’T!

There
is hope on the horizon that the pandemic will not keep kids off the playing
fields and courts much longer. Let’s make sure boorish behavior doesn’t keep
officials off the same fields and courts.&nbsp;

More officials, better fan behavior needed in high school sports

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The 12th-ranked Fort Hays State women's track and field team earned a fifth-place finish at the 2021 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships thanks to a pair of conference champions and seven All-MIAA performances. Tigers won one conference title, earned three All-MIAA honors and posted five provisional marks on day two Sunday (May 9). Fort Hays State picked up 84 points in the team race, less than 10 points behind third-place Pittsburg State. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5966">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;earned 18.5 points for the Tigers on Sunday thanks in large part to a first-place finish in the 100m dash. The sophomore was first across the line in 11.59, winning her second league title to go along with her indoor 60m championship. Holman later placed third in the 200m dash with a time of 24.22, earning another All-MIAA honor. She was also on a pair of relay teams that both placed fourth.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5977">Taylor Savolt</a>, Holman,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5998">Tori Poe</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5975">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;opened the day with a fourth-place finish in the 4x100m relay with a time of 47.92 before Holman, Savolt,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5976">Emily Salmans</a>&nbsp;and Rossi teamed up at the end of the day to post a time of 3:50.99 in the 4x400m relay race. In addition to running in both relays, Rossi picked up team points in three other events on Sunday. The sophomore multi-athlete opened the day with a second-place finish in the heptathlon, earning All-MIAA honors with a two-day total of 4,962 points, 22 points shy of her program record. Rossi also ran in the finals of both hurdle races, placing fourth in the 100m hurdles with a provisional time of 14.14 before finishing seventh in the 400m hurdles with a mark of 1:05.45. The Oak Creek, Colo. native finished the day with 17.5 team points. Savolt also reached double figures in team points after scoring in both relays, the heptathlon and the triple jump. The freshman scored a personal-best 4,609 points in the heptathlon, good for fourth place and improving her provisional mark in the process. She later finished sixth in the triple jump after covering a distance of 38-2.75 on her third attempt. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5964">Laurel Haley</a>&nbsp;reached the finals in the discus before placing ninth with a top toss of 144-10.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5980">Abigail Stewart</a>&nbsp;finished 12th in the 5,000m run with a time of 18:06.61, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5970">Brooke Navarro</a>&nbsp;less than three seconds behind in 15th with a mark of 18:09.26.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5983">Paris Wolf</a>&nbsp;placed 13th in the triple jump with a mark of 36-4.25. Missouri Southern won the team title with 145 points. The Tigers will send some student-athletes to the Loper Twilight next weekend (May 15-16) before selections for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships are announced on Tuesday, May 18.  </figure>PITTSBURG, Kan. - The 12th-ranked Fort Hays State women's track and field team earned a fifth-place finish at the 2021 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships thanks to a pair of conference champions and seven All-MIAA performances. Tigers won one conference title, earned three All-MIAA honors and posted five provisional marks on day two Sunday (May 9). Fort Hays State picked up 84 points in the team race, less than 10 points behind third-place Pittsburg State. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5966">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;earned 18.5 points for the Tigers on Sunday thanks in large part to a first-place finish in the 100m dash. The sophomore was first across the line in 11.59, winning her second league title to go along with her indoor 60m championship. Holman later placed third in the 200m dash with a time of 24.22, earning another All-MIAA honor. She was also on a pair of relay teams that both placed fourth.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5977">Taylor Savolt</a>, Holman,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5998">Tori Poe</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5975">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;opened the day with a fourth-place finish in the 4x100m relay with a time of 47.92 before Holman, Savolt,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5976">Emily Salmans</a>&nbsp;and Rossi teamed up at the end of the day to post a time of 3:50.99 in the 4x400m relay race. In addition to running in both relays, Rossi picked up team points in three other events on Sunday. The sophomore multi-athlete opened the day with a second-place finish in the heptathlon, earning All-MIAA honors with a two-day total of 4,962 points, 22 points shy of her program record. Rossi also ran in the finals of both hurdle races, placing fourth in the 100m hurdles with a provisional time of 14.14 before finishing seventh in the 400m hurdles with a mark of 1:05.45. The Oak Creek, Colo. native finished the day with 17.5 team points. Savolt also reached double figures in team points after scoring in both relays, the heptathlon and the triple jump. The freshman scored a personal-best 4,609 points in the heptathlon, good for fourth place and improving her provisional mark in the process. She later finished sixth in the triple jump after covering a distance of 38-2.75 on her third attempt. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5964">Laurel Haley</a>&nbsp;reached the finals in the discus before placing ninth with a top toss of 144-10.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5980">Abigail Stewart</a>&nbsp;finished 12th in the 5,000m run with a time of 18:06.61, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5970">Brooke Navarro</a>&nbsp;less than three seconds behind in 15th with a mark of 18:09.26.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5983">Paris Wolf</a>&nbsp;placed 13th in the triple jump with a mark of 36-4.25. The Tigers will send some student-athletes to the Loper Twilight next weekend (May 15-16) before selections for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships are announced on Tuesday, May 18. 🏃‍♀️ FHSU women place fifth at MIAA Outdoor Championships

PITTSBURG, Kan. - Highlighted by one championship, one school record, five All-MIAA&nbsp;performances and nine provisional marks, the Fort Hays State men's track and field team placed sixth overall at the 2021 MIAA Outdoor Championships this weekend. The Tigers racked up 65 team points, including 62 on Sunday thanks to five podium appearances on the final day of the meet. The 4x100m relay team of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5927">Xavier Robinson</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5916">Philip Landrum</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5932">Hayden Albright</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5912">Malcom Gardner</a>&nbsp;opened the day with a first-place finish, combining for a provisional time of 40.86. The Tigers then ended the day with a second-place finish in the 4x400m relay. Albright,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5923">Jack Pakkebier</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5934">Nolan Churchman</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5917">Ethan Lang</a>&nbsp;teamed up to finish that race in 3:13.76, earning All-MIAA honors in the process. The Tigers had three other third-place finishes on Sunday, all of which came on the track. Landrum picked up his second All-MIAA honor of the day with a third-place finish in the 200m dash finals, crossing the line in 21.48.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5918">Aaron Mangan</a>&nbsp;rallied over the final stretch to place third in the 800m run, completing the two laps in 1:57.62.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5933">Grant Bradley</a>&nbsp;got the Tigers going early in the day when he placed third in the 3,000m steeplechase with a provisional time of 9:07.11. Fort Hays State occupied three of the top seven spots in the decathlon, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5925">Matthew Pieper</a>&nbsp;smashing his own school record with a two-day total of 6,975 points. The senior placed fourth in the event, improving his school record and provisional mark by 237 points. Pieper now sits in 12th on the national performance chart. Before running in the 4x400m relay at the end of the day, Churchman opened the day with the final five events of the decathlon.  </figure>PITTSBURG, Kan. - Highlighted by one championship, one school record, five All-MIAA&nbsp;performances and nine provisional marks, the Fort Hays State men's track and field team placed sixth overall at the 2021 MIAA Outdoor Championships this weekend. The Tigers racked up 65 team points, including 62 on Sunday thanks to five podium appearances on the final day of the meet. The 4x100m relay team of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5927">Xavier Robinson</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5916">Philip Landrum</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5932">Hayden Albright</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5912">Malcom Gardner</a>&nbsp;opened the day with a first-place finish, combining for a provisional time of 40.86. The Tigers then ended the day with a second-place finish in the 4x400m relay. The senior placed fourth in the event, improving his school record and provisional mark by 237 points. Pieper now sits in 12th on the national performance chart. Before running in the 4x400m relay at the end of the day, Churchman opened the day with the final five events of the decathlon. 🏃‍♂️ Tiger men finish sixth at MIAA Championships

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yermin Mercedes and Jose Abreu had three RBI’s each to help the Chicago White Sox beat Kansas City 9-3 on Sunday, finishing off a three-game sweep and handing the Royals their eighth consecutive loss.

The Royals went winless on its seven-game homestand. They opened the homestand up 1½ games in the division but leave their friendly confides back 3½ games. They were swept by the Indians earlier in the week.

“We’ve got to keep working and teaching and it will pay off,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “There isn’t a quick fix other than maybe a day off and fight again on Tuesday.”

The White Sox have beaten the Royals 10 straight times on the road. The last team to do that was Oakland from 2003-2006 when they beat Kansas City 12 consecutive times in Kauffman Stadium.

Lucas Giolito (2-3) gave up one run, four hits, two walks and fanned two in five innings of work and got the win. It’s the first run allowed by a Chicago starter in five games as they’ve gone 29 1/3 innings and have a 0.31 ERA in that stretch.

“The heart of a lion,” Chicago manager Tony La Russa said. “The first inning could’ve got away, but he limited it to one run. I was really impressed with the way he competed.”

The three runs by the Royals are the most the White Sox have given up in a week.

Kansas City got its first lead since Wednesday after Whit Merrifield doubled and eventually scored two batters later in the first inning. It was a promising start after snapping a 28-inning scoreless streak on Saturday night, but they didn’t lead again after that point.

“Our best baseball is ahead of us and we’re not happy and it’s embarrassing when we don’t play how we should,” Matheny said.

The next half inning, Mercedes hit a triple to right field - the first in his career - scoring Abreu and a double in the third scoring Yoan Moncada and Yasmani Grandal.

“I’ve been working hard every time and not doing too much,” Mercedes said. “Just do the same thing every day.”

Danny Mendick kept his hot bat going with an RBI-single to right field to lead 3-1.

Leury Garcia added another run on an RBI single to score Andrew Vaughan in the sixth.

The Royals had the bases loaded with one out in the sixth, but only managed one run on an RBI from Michael A. Taylor.

Abreu singled in two RBI’s in the seventh and one more in the ninth.

“We got outstanding heart and spirit,” La Russa said. “It will be a happy flight, but we’ve got to focus on what’s next.”

Mike Minor (2-2) got the loss and went five innings giving up five earned runs, five hits, two walks and struck out seven.

Chicago hosts Minnesota on Tuesday to open a week-long homestand with Dylan Cease (2-0, 2.37) on the hill. Kansas City starts a seven-game road trip beginning in Detroit on Tuesday.

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The 12th-ranked Fort Hays State women's track and field team had quite a showing on day one of the 2021 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday, winning one conference title, earning four All-MIAA honors, breaking one school record, posting six NCAA DII provisional marks and sitting in second in the league through six events. The Tigers racked up 35 team points on the opening day, second-most in the league. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5994">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;continued her undefeated season in the high jump, placing first to win her second conference title as a true freshman with an outdoor school-record jump of 5-9.75. The mark automatically qualifies Hart for the DII National Championships and is tied for the top mark in Division II this season. 🏃‍♀️ FHSU women in second place after opening day of MIAA Meet

HAYS – The Hays High Indians used two great pitching
performances Saturday to win the Western Plains Diamond Classic championship
Saturday at the Hays High Field. Sophomore Blake Schmidt threw a no-hitter in
his varsity debut as the Indians pulled away late to beat Life Prep Academy 8-2
to close out pool play. Dylan Dreiling followed with a complete game shutout in
a 9-0 win over Manhattan in the title game.

The third place game between Great Bend and Life Prep was cancelled due to weather.

The Indians (13-3) have now won their own tournament 15
times including the last two in its 39 year history.

Dreiling scattered seven hits with seven strikeouts and two
walks in the title game and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. The win avenged Hays' loss to the Indians on Friday and ended Manhattan's (14-3) 12-game win streak.

HHS took the lead for good in the title game with three runs in the third inning. Carson Spray's RBI single
up the middle drove in the first run. Following a Dalyn Schwarz walk, Ben Krannawitter singled to
left scoring Spray. Dawson VonFeldt added a sacrifice fly scoring Schwarz.

The Indians broke the game open with a five-run sixth.
Krannawitter started the rally with a one-out RBI single to left. Garrett
Wellbrock drove in Krannawitter with a single to right. Dalton Dale then hit a
three-run homer over the evergreens beyond the left field fence. HHS would add
another run in the seventh on a double play to close out the scoring.

Blake Schmidt helped the Indians advance to the title game with a no-hitter against Life
Prep Academy. The sophomore worked around six walks and four hit batters thanks in part to some sparking defense.

Life Prep scored two runs in the fifth to pull within 3-2 but the Indians answered with a five-run fifth highlighted by Dylan Dreiling’s
bases-loaded triple to blow the game open. Garrett Wellbrock doubled to right scoring
Dreiling.

Hays High closes out their regular season with a
doubleheader at Ulysses Tuesday then plays Liberal and Garden City in a
triangular Friday at Hays High School.

⚾ Pitching carries Indians to Diamond Classic title

&nbsp; HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team wrapped up the 2021 season with a Senior Day split on Saturday (May 8), knocking off Newman 8-3 in the opener before falling 5-3 in extra innings in the series finale. ⚾ Tigers split with Jets on Senior Day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Danny Mendick hit a two-run homer during an eight-run first inning for Chicago, and the White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 9-1 on Saturday night.

Yoan Moncada drove in three runs on two hits in the first, and Andrew Vaughn, Leury Garcia and Yasmani Grandal each had an RBI. The White Sox hit for the cycle in the inning and scored their most runs in the opening frame on the road in 21 years.

Lance Lynn (3-1) allowed one hit in five scoreless innings. He walked four and struck out six. Lynn has shut out the Royals over 14 innings in two starts against them this year.

Kansas City, which won 16 of its first 25 games in a surprising surge to first place in the AL Central, has lost seven straight to fall to .500 and now trails Chicago by 2 1/2 games in the division.

David Lynch (0-1) didn't make it out of the first inning. He got two outs and was charged with eight runs on seven hits and one walk.

Kris Bubic relived Lynch and worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out two.

top-20 and finished sixth in the 36-hole Garden City Invitational played at

HAYS – The High High Indians dropped and 8-6 decision to
Manhattan in Friday’s opening game of the Western Plains Diamond Classic. They
came back to beat Great Bend 4-3 in eight innings in the final game of the day
that didn’t end until after midnight.

Hays scored two in the first and two more in fourth and led
4-2 in their opener with the Indians. Manhattan came back with four in the
fifth for a 6-4 lead then added two in the seventh for an 8-4 lead. 

HHS scored took advantage of five walks in the bottom of the
seventh to score two runs but left the bases loaded.

Garrett Wellbrock allowed eight runs, five earned, on 10
hits over 6 1/3 innings and took the loss.

Ben Krannawitter’s sacrifice fly scored Will Cadoret with the
winning run in the late game against the Panthers. The Indians tied the game
3-3 on a Garrett Wellbrock groundout in the fifth.

The Panthers scored single runs in the second, third and
fourth to grab a 3-2 lead. 

Dalton Dale pitched two scoreless innings of relief and
picked up the win. Carson Spray allowed all three runs on six hits with three
walks an no strikeouts over the first six innings.

Manhattan beat Life Prep 3-2 and Great Bend defeated Life
Prep 17-8 in the other games.

Hays High plays Life Prep Academy at 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Great

⚾ HHS goes 1-1 on opening day of Diamond Classic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Carlos Rodón struck out eight in six innings, Zack Collins homered and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 3-0 on Friday night.

The Royals were blanked for the second straight game in part of a six-game losing streak, all to division opponents.

Rodón (5-0) limited the Royals to five hits

“We didn't put pressure on (Rodón),” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “We didn’t have many chances. He kept us off balance.”

Kansas City threatened with two on and one out in the fourth, but the righty worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.

Relievers Codi Heuer, Aaron Bummer and Liam Hendriks worked the final three innings to complete the shutout. Hendriks earned with sixth save. “We have the making of a bullpen with a lot of depth,” White Sox manager Tony La Russa said.

Collins opened the scoring in the fifth inning with a solo shot to center. “I was trying to put together a good at-bat," Collins said. "I got the barrel to it, and it got out.”

It was just the 26th home run of the year for the White Sox, which is 28th in the league.

Brad Keller (2-4) gave up three runs off five hits in six innings of work with a season-high six strikeouts and a walk. The bulk of the damage came in the sixth inning with RBIs from Adam Eaton and Jose Abreu.

“We put a couple of good at-bats together, Keller had really good stuff," La Russa said. We did enough but credit to Keller, he was good. We just kept after it."

Salvador Perez led the Royals, going 4 for 4 with a double.

Kansas City has lost 11 of the last 13 matchups with Chicago dating to last season.

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Fort Hays State Softball saw its 2021 season come to a close on Friday in the MIAA Tournament Best-of-3 series against Rogers State. The Hillcats won both game one and two on Friday to clinch a spot in next weekend's final four of the MIAA Tournament in Edmond, Oklahoma. RSU won game one 3-2 on a walk-off home run in the second extra inning, then held on in the nightcap 4-1. Fort Hays State closed its season at 24-22, finishing with a winning mark for the second straight year.

Game 1: Rogers State 3, Fort Hays State 2 (9 inning) Fort Hays State put together a 2-out rally in the sixth inning of the first contest to eventually force extra innings. The Tigers could not capitalize on their leadoff batter reaching second to start the ninth inning on a fielding error and then Elexis Watson provided a walk-off home run down the left field line in the bottom half of the inning to give Rogers State the win.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Abigail Taylor brought home both runs in the first inning for Rogers State on a 2-RBI single. Brielle Tyseling added an RBI single in the fourth and Danelle Day had an RBI single in the fifth. Fort Hays State threatened in the fourth when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5886">Elise Capra</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5957">Jessica Espinoza</a>&nbsp;started the inning with back-to-back singles. Game 2: Rogers State 4, Fort Hays State 1 The Hillcats took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and added on with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Brielle Tyseling added an RBI single in the fourth and Danelle Day had an RBI single in the fifth. Fort Hays State threatened in the fourth when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5886">Elise Capra</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5957">Jessica Espinoza</a>&nbsp;started the inning with back-to-back singles. Capra took an extra base on Espinoza's single and then Espinoza stole second.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5885">Terran Caldwell</a>&nbsp;then hit a grounder to the shortstop who chose to throw home to cut down Capra. It looked as though Capra slid under the tag in time, the umpire called out, then Espinoza and Caldwell both tried to take extra bases on delayed advancements and were thrown out as well. The chaotic play squashed the Tiger momentum when the RSU lead was just 2-0. In the seventh, the Tigers built a rally once again as Capra led off with a single to complete a 3-for-3 game at the plate.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5885">Terran Caldwell</a>&nbsp;then drove her home for the only Tiger run with an RBI single.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5882">Katie Adler</a>&nbsp;was hit by a pitch and then the Hillcats committed an error off the bat of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5896">Lily Sale</a>&nbsp;to load the bases. However, a ground out ended the game and the season for the Tigers as they had the tying run on first and the potential go-ahead run at the plate. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5887">Hailey Chapman</a>&nbsp;threw a complete game for the Tigers, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks. She struck out three. M'Kayla Hillman threw a complete game for the Hillcats as well, allowing eight hits and one walk. She struck out five. It was the final game for several Tiger seniors who closed out the season by making their first MIAA Tournament appearances. Several of the Tiger seniors played well over 100 games in their careers, including five-year senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5896">Lily Sale</a>&nbsp;who set the new career record for games played at FHSU at 224. 🥎 Tigers season ends with loss to Rogers State in MIAA Tournament

LIBERAL – The Hays High softball team ran their winning
streak to seven games Friday with a doubleheader sweep in Liberal. The Indians
beat the Redskins 1-0 and 12-3 to move to 12-5 on the season.

The Indians scored the only run in game one on an error on a
fly ball off the bat of Lakyn Zimemrman scoring Madyson Sennett. 

Aubree Thomas worked around a one-out error to strikeout the
final two Liberal batters and preserve the win.

Hays scored four in the top of the first in game two, then
after Liberal rallied with three in the third to pull within a run, the Indians
scored single runs in the fourth and fifth then used a six-run seventh to blow
the game open.

Lakym Zimmerman, Ashlyn Zimmer and Raegan Winter all had
three of the Indians 17 hits. S Fagan drove in three runs. Zimmer, Brenna
Schwien and Madyson Sennett all drove in two runs.

Aubree Thomas struck out 16 with three walks in the complete
game victory in game one, She fanned eight with no walks in the second contest.
