🤼‍♂️ Meyers leads HHS at Rocky Welton Invitational

GARDEN CITY - Hays High's three state ranked wrestlers finished in the top-three in their respective weight classes helping the Indians to an 11th place finish at the 64th annual Rocky Welton Invitational hosted by Garden City High School.

Gavin Meyers, who's the top-ranked wrestler in at 220, finished first after winning all four of his matches by fall in the first period. Meyers defeated the undefeated  and defending Colorado state champion Xavier Freeman of Pueblo East in the finals.

Meyers was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the upper weights.

Harley Zimmerman finished second at 132, losing to Dodge City's Damien Mendez by a major decision (22-12) in the finals. He won his first four matches by fall.

Gavin Nutting finished third at heavyweight. After receiving a first-round bye, Nutting won his first two matches by fall before falling by a fall in the semifinals to Newton's Rio Gomez. He bounced back with a 7-1 win over Newton Marcel Gonzalez of Newton in the consolation semifinals then beat Valley Center's Elijah Hunt by fall in the third place match.
