West and will host No. 14 Andover Wednesday at Hays High

CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Andrew Vaughn, starting the nightcap at first base after AL MVP Jose Abreu was injured in a frightening collision in the first game, homered to send the Chicago White Sox over the Kansas City Royals 3-1 Friday for a doubleheader split.

The Royals ended an 11-game losing streak in the opener 6-2, stopping Chicago's six-game winning string.

The collision occurred in the second inning when Hunter Dozier, after popping up, jogged out of the batter’s box with his head down and grazed past catcher Yasmani Grandal.

Dozier took another couple of steps and then slammed hard into Abreu as he was tracking the ball, knocking both players to the ground about 20 feet from the plate.

Grandal caught the ball as trainers and medical staffs came onto the field. After few minutes, Abreu got up and left the field walking on his own, but looked dazed with his arms draped around two staffers.

Abreu suffered a facial bruise and cut, along with a bruised left knee. Tests for a concussion were negative and he was listed as day to day.

Dozier was put on the seven-day concussion injured list.

Michael Kopech tossed four sharp innings for the White Sox in the second game. He allowed one run, on a homer by Carlos Santana, and two hits while striking out five.

Codi Heuer (3-1) pitched a scoreless fifth to earn the win in the seven-inning game. Aaron Bummer followed with a perfect inning, then Liam Hendriks worked around in infield single in the seventh for his eighth save.

Vaughn made his first career start at first base in the majors and homered for the second time in three games. His two-run drive in the second chased Jakob Junis (1-3) and Chicago scored another run in the inning when Jake Brentz walked Yoán Moncada with the bases loaded.

⚾ Royals end 11-game skid with win over White Sox in doubleheader opener

Sara Breckbill will cross the FHSU commencement stage today, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing with an emphasis in digital marketing from Fort Hays State University’s Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship.&nbsp;

While some seniors are moving on and joining the workforce after what has been an unprecedented year, Breckbill will be returning in the fall to complete a minor in communication, certificate in leadership, and take the field for one more softball season.&nbsp;

“I was worried I would be putting my life on hold for one more year,” Breckbill said. “But then I realized I would get to do the thing I love for one more year and I could never get that back.”

Breckbill started in all 46 games this season, and led the team in batting average (.331), on-base percentage (.413), hits (46), RBIs (27), and doubles (11). She was also named an All-MIAA Honorable Mention at utility/non-pitcher. Breckbill and the team have come a long way, ending the year with a 24-22 record, seeing major progress from her freshman season finish at 13-37.

“It was tough that first year. Our coach had been here three years and we were focused on improving individually, as a team, and setting a foundation for the program,” Breckbill said. “Each year we’ve gotten better, though. Team chemistry improved and this year we were able to go into post-season play for the first time since I’ve been here and that’s the dream- to keep getting better and going further.”

Growing up in Parker, Colorado, Breckbill has played softball since she was seven. A talented athlete with an insatiable work ethic, dreaming of playing in college, Breckbill trained hard and received scholarship offers from colleges in Colorado and Texas. Her high school coach was an FHSU alumnus, and told her about the incredible academic programs and warm and welcoming college town on the plains.&nbsp;

“This is where I was supposed to be, even if its cheesy and cliché, it’s true,” Breckbill said.&nbsp;

Breckbill was in the first freshman class to live in the new Victor E Village and a part of the Athletes Today learning community. Being a part of the learning community helped her get acquainted with Hays and make lifelong friends.&nbsp;

“I’m nostalgic walking around there and remembering playing pool or board games and studying and staying up until 3 a.m. writing a paper,” Breckbill said.&nbsp;

The friends she made in those first years at Fort Hays State would be the same ones that she would navigate the COVID-19 pandemic alongside. Student-athletes were faced with many changes throughout the year, including daily COVID-19 testing, taking hybrid classes, and creating smaller pods or groups of people who would work out, study, and stay together to ensure health and safety of all the Tiger athletes. While it was tough, it made it all worthwhile to play in the Spring 2021 season.&nbsp;

“The people of Hays and FHSU are what make it special,” Breckbill said. “In this college town, everyone is involved in athletics and the community turns out to cheer for your games. It’s an awesome environment and even though it’s been different this year, we’d do it over again just to feel that energy and sense of community pride again.”

From lifelong friends to faculty, staff, and supporters who feel like family, there's nothing quite like the Fort Hays State atmosphere. FHSU faculty, staff, and supporters all play a massive part in the life of student-athletes. Breckbill can recount many times someone has saved her clippings from newspapers, left positive notes for the team, or sent an email just to check in and let her know they are proud of her effort in the classroom and on the field.&nbsp;

“There’s so many people that have made a difference and helped us get where we are today,” Breckbill said.&nbsp;

Thanks to the support of the FHSU and Hays Community, Breckbill and her teammates have grown up over the past four years, academically, personally, and as athletes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We have a goal every year and it’s important to our team that we excel academically- that’s why we’re here,” Breckbill said. “We learned to adapt and manage our time.”

Breckbill dreams of working for a college, doing social media management for athletes to combine her passion for sports and her newfound love for social media marketing. In one of Dr. Mary Martin's courses, she discovered her interest in marketing and digital marketing and understood the opportunity available in sports marketing. &nbsp;

“This semester we are writing a blog about social media- how to get started, how to get a job and internship,” said Breckbill. “I’ve really enjoyed it and it’s beneficial to do things that I will do in the workforce. I’m able to apply what I’m doing in the classroom right now.”

For now, her plans to land a career in sports marketing will wait as she continues to build her skills academically and, on the field, while preparing for one final season at FHSU.

Team chemistry improved and this year we were able to go into post-season play for the first time since I’ve been here and that’s the dream- to keep getting better and going further.”Growing up in Parker, Colorado, Breckbill has played softball since she was seven. A talented athlete with an insatiable work ethic, dreaming of playing in college, Breckbill trained hard and received scholarship offers from colleges in Colorado and Texas. Her high school coach was an FHSU alumnus, and told her about the incredible academic programs and warm and welcoming college town on the plains.&nbsp;“This is where I was supposed to be, even if its cheesy and cliché, it’s true,” Breckbill said.&nbsp;Breckbill was in the first freshman class to live in the new Victor E Village and a part of the Athletes Today learning community. Being a part of the learning community helped her get acquainted with Hays and make lifelong friends.&nbsp;“I’m nostalgic walking around there and remembering playing pool or board games and studying and staying up until 3 a.m. writing a paper,” Breckbill said.&nbsp;The friends she made in those first years at Fort Hays State would be the same ones that she would navigate the COVID-19 pandemic alongside. Student-athletes were faced with many changes throughout the year, including daily COVID-19 testing, taking hybrid classes, and creating smaller pods or groups of people who would work out, study, and stay together to ensure health and safety of all the Tiger athletes. While it was tough, it made it all worthwhile to play in the Spring 2021 season.&nbsp;“The people of Hays and FHSU are what make it special,” Breckbill said. “In this college town, everyone is involved in athletics and the community turns out to cheer for your games. It’s an awesome environment and even though it’s been different this year, we’d do it over again just to feel that energy and sense of community pride again.”From lifelong friends to faculty, staff, and supporters who feel like family, there's nothing quite like the Fort Hays State atmosphere. FHSU faculty, staff, and supporters all play a massive part in the life of student-athletes. Breckbill can recount many times someone has saved her clippings from newspapers, left positive notes for the team, or sent an email just to check in and let her know they are proud of her effort in the classroom and on the field.&nbsp;“There’s so many people that have made a difference and helped us get where we are today,” Breckbill said.&nbsp;Thanks to the support of the FHSU and Hays Community, Breckbill and her teammates have grown up over the past four years, academically, personally, and as athletes.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We have a goal every year and it’s important to our team that we excel academically- that’s why we’re here,” Breckbill said. “We learned to adapt and manage our time.”Breckbill dreams of working for a college, doing social media management for athletes to combine her passion for sports and her newfound love for social media marketing. In one of Dr. Mary Martin's courses, she discovered her interest in marketing and digital marketing and understood the opportunity available in sports marketing. &nbsp;“This semester we are writing a blog about social media- how to get started, how to get a job and internship,” said Breckbill. “I’ve really enjoyed it and it’s beneficial to do things that I will do in the workforce. I’m able to apply what I’m doing in the classroom right now.”For now, her plans to land a career in sports marketing will wait as she continues to build her skills academically and, on the field, while preparing for one final season at FHSU.

LIBERAL
– The Hays High boys track and field team had seven first place finishes and
wins the Western Athletic Conference meet by 41 points over Liberal. The
Indians girls finished in fourth place.

Jaren
Kanak again led the boys with two first place finishes, taking the 100 meters in
a time of 10.37, which is unofficially tied for the fifth fastest in Kansas
history. Kanak also won the long jump with a leap of 21’7 1/2”.

Gaven
Haselhorst set a new school record in the shot put with a throw of 58’2 3/4”. Jordan
Dale cleared 6’4” and won the high jump. Nate Brooks improved his personal best
by 30 feet and won the javelin (153’8”). Tucker Veach took the pole vault (13’6”)
and Trey Adams won the shot put (168’3”).

Reanna
Green won two events and was named the WAC Girls Track Athlete of the Year. The
senior wo the long jump (17’11”) and triple jump (36’0”).

Tony
Crough was named the Western Athletic Conference Coach of Year.

🏃‍♂️ HHS boys first, girls fourth at WAC meet

HAYS - Ellis edged Hoxie by two strokes to win the Mid-Continent League golf championship Thursday at the Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course. TMP-Marian finished third. 

Hoxie's Ashton Dowell shot a 3-over-par 74 and won the individual title by two strokes over Plainville’s Parker Krob .&nbsp; TMP-Marian Jackson Schulte finished in a four-way tie for fifth with Dylan
Budig of Hill City, Brady Frickey of Ellis and Ty Sides of Phillipsburg. The
Monarchs Landon Rozean placesd 10th.

⛳ Railers win MCL title, Hoxie's Dowell individual champ

HAYS – The TMP-Marian offense carried the Monarchs to a doubleheader sweep of the Russell/Victoria Broncos Thursday afternoon to close out the regular season.

TMP combined to scored 13 total runs in the doubleheader and senior Sophia Coulter hit a home run in both games making four straight games with a home run.&nbsp;

Sophomore Madison Augustine got the start in both games of the doubleheader and would come away with a pair of wins.

Game 1: TMP 6, Russell/Victoria 5 Russell/Victoria took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a two-run single by Belle Walton. Her first two two run scoring singles in the game.

In the bottom of the second TMP answered right back when the pitch Madison Augustine helped her own cause with a two-run single.

The Broncos retook the lead in the top of the third on a Brooklyn Nowak RBI double.

TMP trailed 3-2 through four and a half innings and that’s when the bats came to life.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning three straight Monarchs reached base ahead of Jack VonLintel who singled in a pair of runs to put TMP up 4-3.&nbsp;

Two batters later Sophia Coulter connected on her first home run of the day, a two-run shot to put TMP up 6-3.&nbsp;

Walton drove in two more runs in the top of the sixth inning cutting it to 6-5 but Augustine got three ground ball outs in the top of the seven securing the 6-5 TMP win.

Augustine allowed five runs, four earned, one seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in seven innings.

Coulter, VonLintel and Madison Augustine&nbsp;&nbsp;were two-for-three at the plate in game one with two RBI’s.

Game 2: TMP 13, Russell/Victoria 10 The two teams combined to scored 23 runs on 21 hits in game two of the doubleheader.

Russell’s Kendra Bay gave Russell/Victoria a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on her fourth home run of the season.

But TMP answered back in a big way in the bottom of the inning. Jack VonLintel got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly and then two batters later Sophia Coulter hit her second home run of the day, and her fifth of the season, a three-run shot to put TMP 4-2.

Coulter added three more RBI’s in the bottom of the second inning on a three-run double to put TMP up 7-2.&nbsp;

After batting around in the first TMP did it again in a five-run third inning as they built a 12-2 lead through three innings.

In the inning the Monarchs recorded four RBI doubles.

Down 12-2 through three innings Russell would mount their comeback.

Over the next four innings they out scored TMP 8-1.&nbsp;

They sent eight to the plate in a three-run third inning and eight to the plate in a four-run sixth inning.

But Augustine was able to keep Russell/Victoria off the board in the seventh as the Monarchs picked up the 13-10 win.

Augustine allowed 10 total runs, eight earned in a game two victory. She struck out four and walked five in seven innings.

Coulter was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a career-high eight RBI’s. She homered and doubled twice. She finished the doubleheader 6-for-7 with two home runs, 10 RBI’s and two doubles.&nbsp;

VonLintel drove in three more runs in game two and was two-for-three and scored three times.

TMP improved to 10-10 and finished 6-0 in the MCL.

The Monarchs will get Beloit in the first round of the 3A Larned sub-state Monday in Larned.&nbsp;

The Broncos will take on the host Larned.

🥎 Offense leads TMP to sweep of Russell

HAYS - Hays High baseball hosted Garden City in a non-league double header to finish out the regular season on Thursday. The Indians ended the year with 18 games played after two games in Ulysses were canceled due to weather.

Hays also entered the final day knowing they would finish in the top four spots in the west half of 5A. That positioning allows Hays to host a regional tournament next week.

Game 1: Hays 2, Garden City 0 Dylan Dreiling threw a complete game shutout for the third time this season beating Garden City 2-0. Dreiling had thrown 55 pitches through the first three innings before settling in over the next four. He has now thrown 22 consecutive scoreless innings.

Garden City loaded the bases in the second inning with two outs but struck out twice to end the threat. The Buffaloes had runners in scoring position in the third and sixth inning but could not push a run across the plate.

Dreiling allowed just one hit, walked four and struck out eleven as he moved to 6-0 on the year. It is the fifth time this year he recorded double digit strike outs.

The Indians recorded just four hits against two Garden City pitchers. They walked five times and only struck out twice. Ben Krannawitter doubled with one out in the third inning. He scored on Dreiling's two out single for the games first run.

Hays loaded the bases in the fifth but scored just one run when Garden City couldn't complete a double play allowing Carson Spray to score the final run of the contest.

Game 2: Hays 13, Garden City 7 Hays High scored 11 of their 13 runs in just two innings of game two, taking advantage of wild pitching from Garden City. The Indians scored four runs in the second and seven runs in the fourth.

Garden City led after the first inning 2-1. The Indians took the lead in the bottom after the second inning 5-3 and never trailed again. The Buffaloes tied the game up in the top of third 5-5 before Hays tallied a single run to take a 6-5 lead. The Indians seven run fourth blew the game open.

Garrett Wellbrock worked six innings to pick up his fourth victory of the season. Carson Spray pitched the seventh to close the game out.

Hays was walked ten times in the the second game and hit by pitches on three occasions.

Garden City drops to 10-8 on the year. Hays improves to 15-3 and will be the three seed in next week's regional. The Indians will host a four team regional tournament next Wednesday.&nbsp;

⚾ Hays sweeps Garden City to close regular season

HAYS
– The TMP-Marian Monarchs closed out their regular season with a pair of
one-run wins over Russell/Victoria Thursday. The Monarchs rally with four runs
in the bottom of the eighth after the Broncos scored three in the top of the
inning and won the opener 4-3. They take the second game 2-1 and wrap up the
regular season at 10-10.

The
Monarchs and Broncos will play each other Monday at 6:00 p.m. at the TMP Field
in their 3A regional opener. 
 The
Monarchs overcame six errors in the opener. Griffin Schumacher drove in the
game-winning run with a one-out infield single following four straight walks. TMP
also took advantage of a hit batter and error in the inning.

Chet
Irving had three of TMP’s 12 singles.&nbsp;
Nicholas Herman picked allowed one earned run in three innings of relief
and picked up the win.

The
Monarchs scored a run in the second then added the go-ahead run in the third in
game two. Griffin Schumacher singled home Caden Morgan with the first run. Mark
Rack singled to left scoring Jace Wentling with the go-ahead run.

Morgan
gave up on unearned runs on two hits over 5 2/3 innings and picked up the win.
Nick Helget threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and got the save.
