LIBERAL - Dylan Dreiling had seven hits including three home runs to help the Hays High baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Liberal in their season-opener. The Indians beat the Redskins 12-2 and 10-0 to move to 2-0 overall and in Western Athletic Conference play. The Redskins fall to 2-3 and 0-3 in the WAC.
Game 1: Hays 12, Liberal 2
After giving up a pair of unearned runs in the first and second innings, the Indians scored 12 unanswered to win their season opener.
Dylan Dreiling gave them the lead for good with a three-run homer over the right field wall in the third. Dreiling also doubled and finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs .
Garrett Wellbrock went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Brayden Dreher also added two hits and drove in a run.
Wellbrock's triple scored Dalton Dale to push the lead to 5-2 in the fourth. Dreiling followed with a double to right which scored Wellbrock give Hays a 6-2 lead.
Wellbrock (1-0) went the distance on the mound allowing two unearned runs on three hits with a career-high eight strikeouts and only one walk.
Game 2: Hays 10, Liberal 0
Dreiling had three more hits, two of the home runs, and drove in five runs. His three-run blast gave the Indians a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Dreiling added a two-run shot in the top of seventh to close out the scoring.
Brayden Dreher had two hits and drove in two runs.
Blake Schmidt (1-0) pitched six shutout innings allowing four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Dalton Dale pitched the ninth and gave up a hit and struck out one.
The Indians are back on the road Tuesday when they play at Washburn Rural.
