ELLIS - After having their first two doubleheaders postponed due to weather, the TMP-Marian baseball team was finally able to begin their season Monday with a doubleheader in Ellis.

The Monarchs won the first game 15-5 but the Railers bounced back to win game two 8-4.

Henry Fitzthum and Ryan Shuckman went 4-1 and finished first in No. 1 Doubles. Kaiden Bunder and Carsen Riat also went and won No. 2 Doubles.

Colin Clark finished third in No. 1 singles and Will Linenberger placed third in No. 2 singles.

Trego won the team title with 38 points. Great Bend finished second wtih 27 points and the Hays "Gold" team placed third with 25 points.

🎾 Indians at Scott City Monday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The only big mistake that Cleveland rookie Steven Kwan has made during his first four big league games came in left field, where he was trying to rush a catch-and-throw to the plate and had a flyball bounce off the heel of his glove.

He hasn't made many mistakes with a bat in his hands.

And after that gaffe in the outfield Monday, the 24-year-old from Oregon State came right back to belt a bases-loaded triple, becoming the first player to reach base at least three times in each of his first four games while leading the rechristened Guardians to a 10-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

“He was trying to do it a little too quick and it hit the heel of his glove. But then his at-bat was terrific," Guardians manager Terry Francona said. “His at-bats are really, really good. That’s stating the obvious.”

Might as well drive home the point: Kwan went 5 for 5 and reached safely six times a day earlier, when Cleveland rolled to a 17-3 win over the Royals. He reached base three more times and added his first three RBIs on Monday, finishing the series 9 for 13, reaching base in 15 of 19 plate appearances and scoring four times.

“Pretty cool,” Kwan said in his typical understated manner. “Pretty surreal.”

Oscar Mercado added a two-run homer for the Guardians, who scored just once over the first two games in Kansas City but piled up 27 runs over the last two. The result was a split of the season-opening set between AL Central rivals.

“I'm done trying to figure this out,” Francona said of the scoring disparity.

Logan Allen (1-0) earned the win Monday with two scoreless innings of relief in his first appearance of the season.

The finale was tied 4-all in the seventh when Royals reliever Jake Brentz (0-1) gave up a single, sacrifice bunt and walk. Josh Staumont then gave up bloop singles to Jose Ramirez and Franmil Reyes as Cleveland took a 6-4 lead.

The Royals loaded the bases in the bottom half against Bryan Shaw before Hunter Dozier hit a flyball that Kwan dropped. As a run crossed the plate, Myles Straw threw out a runner at second base in a bang-bang play that stood upon video review. Nick Sandlin relieved and got Adalberto Mondesi to ground into an inning-ending double play.

“Just tried to do too much,” Kwan said of the flyball that got away from him.

Not to worry. Kwan atoned for the mistake with his triple in the eighth inning.

“He’s a tough out. You can tell that already,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said.

Kwan's now gone 72 plate appearances, including Triple-A and spring training, since his last strikeout, and his 15 times on base through his first four games is the most since in the major leagues since at least 1901.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Cleveland Guardians won for the first time with their new name as hot-starting rookie Steven Kwan went 5 for 5 on Sunday in a 17-3 romp over the Kansas City Royals.

Oscar Mercado hit a grand slam during a five-RBI performance, and Owen Miller drove in a career-high four runs. Cleveland had lost its first two games since changing this season to the Guardians from the Indians, its name since 1915.

Kwan had four singles and a double, was hit by a pitch and scored four runs. The 24-year-old outfielder made his major league debut on Opening Day and is 8 for 10 in three games so far, reaching base in 12 of 14 plate appearances.

“I know it’s three games in, but nobody wants to not get excited,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said. "When our young guys want to do things like that, it is exciting.”

Kwan hit .469 in spring training after batting a combined .301 in three minor league seasons.

“I’m not surprised about what (Kwan) is doing,” Mercado said. “He is such a good player, knows himself and knows what he can do. He is such a sparkplug, and it is going to be awesome to watch him play this year.”

Held to a total of one run while dropping the first two games of the series, Cleveland broke loose with 22 hits. José Ramírez, who homered and had three hits, and Amed Rosario, who had four hits, each drove in three runs.

“It was good for everybody to let our offense loosen up a little bit,” Francona said.

Mercado connected for his first career grand slam off Taylor Clarke in the first inning, capping a six-run burst. The Guardians made it 10-0 in the second, and Mercado added an RBI triple in the fourth.

Ramírez and Miller each contributed three hits.

Pitching with a huge cushion, Cal Quantrill (1-0) tossed five innings and allowed two runs and four hits.

Kris Bubic (0-1) got just two outs and was tagged for five runs on three hits with two walks.

Royals rookie Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-run double.

“It’s hard for a club to fight back when they’re putting up big numbers in the first and the second,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “We had an opportunity to keep it close, and we didn’t, and it just got out of hand. Those are the kind you learn from and move on from.”

🥎 Tigers settle for split with Hornets

HAYS, Kan. –&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6357">Maria Paz Diaz</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6115">Fiorella Mendez</a>&nbsp;each needed a tiebreak to battle out individual wins against Emporia State in a conference match on Saturday. The Hornets took the match as a team though by a score of 5-2, now 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA. FHSU moved to 6-8 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA. Emporia State won all three doubles matches for the first team point, but the No. 1 Tiger team of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6675">Irina Alfonso</a>&nbsp;and Paz Diaz were able to force a tiebreak in their match. The No. 1 Hornet team prevailed in the tiebreak by a score of 7-4 after 6-3 results in the other two doubles matches already had determined the first point of the match. Colby CC plans summer volleyball tournaments

HAYS - Dalton Dale and Derek Riggs both homered to lead the Hays High Indians to a 15-3 run-rule win in game one of their home-opening doubleheader against Garden City Friday at Hays High School. The Buffaloes turned the tables in game two, scoring 12-runs in the fourth&nbsp; inning to defeat the Indians 16-10.

The Indians are now 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Buffaloes move to 5-4 and 2-2 in the WAC.

Game 1: Hays 15, Garden City 3 (5 innings) Dalton Dale gave the Indians a 2-1 lead in the first with a two-run blast over the left field fence. They added four in the second to go up 6-1. Noah Weimer drove in the first run with a single to left. He and Garrett Wellbrock would later score on a Dylan Dreiling double. Dreiling scored on a double off the bat of Dale.

After the Buffaloes scored two in the third, the Indians answered with five in the fourth. Wellbrock, Dreiling, Dale and Riggs all singled to start the inning. Then with one out, Bradyn Dreher singled to right driving in two runs. Jack Fields scored the final run of the frame on a double steal attempt.

Riggs ended the game early with a grand slam in the fifth. It came after a double by Wellbrock, an intentional walk to Dreiling and Dale was hit by a pitch.

Wellbrock and Dale each had three of the Indians 15 hits. Riggs drove in five runs and Dale four. Dreiling and Dreher both drove in a pair of runs.

Wellbrock (2-0) allowed one earned run on seven hits and picked up the win. He matched his career strikeout total with eight while walking only one.

Game 2: Garden City 16, Hays 10 The Buffaloes scored four in the first then used a 12-run fourth to build a 16-5 lead then held on the rest of the way. Garden City had eight hits in the decisive inning and took advantage of four hit batters and two walks.

The Indians scored three in the first then added single runs in the second and third to take a 5-4 lead. Dalton Dale hit his second two-run homer of the night then Brayden Dreher scoring Keaton Barnett in the first.

Garrett Wellbrock scored from third on a passed ball to tie the game in the second then the Indians scored the go-ahead run on a double-play in the third.

Hays scored a single run in the fourth on Dylan Dreiling fifth home run of the season. They would added four in the fifth but couldn't get any more the rest of the way.

Blake Schmidt suffered the loss, allowing 12 runs (11 earned) on nine hit with five strikeouts and two walks. Dalton Dale gave up four runs without recording an out. Keaton Barnett pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings to close out the game.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State fell twice to Washburn on Friday in an MIAA doubleheader at Tiger Stadium in Hays. The Ichabods did all of their damage in one inning of game one for a 4-0 win, then took the second contest 6-1. Washburn moved to 30-11 overall and 12-2 in the MIAA, while FHSU is now 16-21-1 overall and 2-8 in the MIAA. 🥎 Tigers swept by Ichabods

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. searched the crowd for his family before his highly anticipated big league debut Thursday, finally spotting them in the sea of Kansas City Royals fans that had bundled up for a blustery opening day.

“I don't know if they were even paying attention to me,” Witt admitted later.

Everyone was paying attention to him by the end.

After going hitless in his first three at-bats, Witt roped a double down the left-field line with two outs in the eighth inning, spurring the Royals to a 3-1 victory over the rechristened Cleveland Guardians.

“You couldn't have scripted that any better,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said with a grin. “This isn't one he's going to forget, and I probably won't, either.”

In a matchup of former Cy Young Award winners, Cleveland ace Shane Bieber and erstwhile Royals star Zach Greinke dueled to a 1-all stalemate before turning the game over to the bullpens on a cold day at Kauffman Stadium.

It remained tied until the eighth, when the Royals' Michael Taylor worked a walk off Triston McKenzie (0-1) and then took second on Nicky Lopez's sacrifice bunt. McKenzie struck out Whit Merrifield before Witt, regarded by many as the No. 1 prospect in the game, doubled down the left-field line to give Kansas City its first lead.

“I could kind of see it coming a little bit with the way the game was going,” said Greinke, who signed a one-year deal to return to the club that drafted him 20 years ago. “It felt like it was going to be a special day.”

Andrew Benintendi drove in Witt, giving Royals reliever Scott Barlow (1-0) a cushion. And after a perfect eighth, Barlow struck out Myles Straw with runners on the corners in the ninth to end it.

Lopez also drove in a run for Kansas City, while Jose Ramirez had an RBI double for the Guardians a day after agreeing to a $124 million, five-year deal to stay with Cleveland through what could be the end of his career.

Plenty of famous fans braved wintry weather to enjoy opening day.

Several members of the Kansas City Chiefs, including coach Andy Reid, dressed up in Royals gear. So did members of the Kansas basketball team, which beat North Carolina in the national title game Monday night in New Orleans.

It was 47 degrees at first pitch, and a gale blowing out to right field made if seem even colder. Then there was the off-and-on drizzle that turned to shooting pellets of ice during the national anthem, which probably made everybody stuck wearing a jersey long for the sun and warmth of Arizona spring training.

“The weather was not fun for anybody,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said.

Greinke didn't seem to mind. He wore short sleeves for his first start in a Kansas City uniform since Sept. 30, 2010.

He didn't have the same dominant fastball that he had in 2009, when he won the Cy Young, but he made up for it with the wisdom of 18 years in the big leagues — and a beguiling 69 mph curveball. Greinke made it through 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk while striking out one, then got a standing ovation from the crowd.

“He just knows how to pitch,” Francona said.

Bieber, whose Cy Young came 11 years after Greinke won his, was nearly as good. He allowed one run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings for Cleveland, which played with a new name for the first time since 1915.

Both of the staff aces were gone by the time Witt came to bat in the eighth inning, though. They were reduced to fans just like everyone else, watching in rapt attention as one of the game's bright young stars stepped to the plate.

“I was going nuts. I jumped over the (dugout) railing,” Lopez said. “He's ready for this moment. The Royals know he's ready for this moment. We all know he's ready for this moment.”

The Royals honored longtime scout Art Stewart, who spent 69 years in professional baseball, with members of his family throwing out first pitches to George Brett and Mike Sweeney. Stewart died in November at the age of 94.

team opened their season with a sixth-place finish at the McPherson Invitational
at the Turkey Creek Golf Course Thursday. Ashton Hernandez led the Indians with
a 93 and tied for 19th place. Blake Buckles shot a 94 and finished 22nd.

The Indians shot a 388. Sacred Heart
out of Salina won the team title with a 325. The Knights finished seven shots
ahead of the host Bullpups and 27 shots better than third place Derby.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Every big leaguer thinks their team has a chance when they arrive to spring training. The old “hope springs eternal” cliché is, after all, more apropos to Major League Baseball than perhaps any other professional sport.

It's been a few years, though, since the Royals viewed a season with expectations rather than hope.

Not since it won back-to-back American League pennants in 2014 and ‘15 under former manager Ned Yost and went on to win its first World Series in three decades, has the long-suffering, small-market franchise begun a season with the same amount of optimism that it carries into Thursday's opener against Cleveland at Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals have erstwhile star and former Cy Young Award winner Zach Greinke on the hill. They have the game's top prospect, Bobby Witt Jr., at third base. And they return just about everyone else from a club that has improved its win percentage each of the past three seasons and wants to take the next step toward that of a contender.

“The first conversation we had in this clubhouse is the expectation, in our mind, it's championships, and that's plural. How do we build on the things we're doing?” explained Royals manager Mike Matheny, who took over when Yost retired after his second straight 100-plus loss season in 2019 and has been tasked with finishing off the rebuild.

It hasn't been easy on Matheny, either. His first year turned into a 60-game sprint because of COVID-19, which also wiped out an entire minor league season, thus setting back the development of many of the organization's top prospects.

“I truly believe winning is a habit,” Matheny said, “and you just kind of have to have that level of expectation, and you start getting players that buy into that, and you realize it's extremely special. But you also look around here and take an honest evaluation of where we are. This is in front of us right now. This isn't us building for the future. It's right here, right now. It's unique. The guys smell it. And to be in the middle of it, there's no place I'd rather be.”

The Royals were forced by finances more than anything into their massive rebuild about five years ago, when they were unable to hold onto championship cornerstones such as Eric Hosmer and Lorenzo Cain. But the undertaking always felt as if it had a clear path to success, rather than the work of a franchise drifting aimlessly in the wind.

That was the way the Royals were for much of the 1990s and all of the 2000s.

Yet the fact that Dayton Moore, then the general manager and now the club president, has already produced a champion in Kansas City gave the process instant credibility. And it's not as if the Royals were starting entirely from scratch; among the key pieces already in the fold were All-Star catcher Salvador Perez and All-Star outfielder Whit Merrifield.

The biggest task was to rebuild the pitching staff. So, the Royals pounded the first-year player draft in search of arms, and their conscious decision to scoop up advanced college pitchers has already produced on the big league level.

Greinke will start on opening day in his much-anticipated return to Kansas City, but he'll be followed in the opening series against the Guardians by a bunch of 20-somethings Brad Keller, Kris Bubic and Carlos Hernandez. Another will probably be the fifth start, whether that is Daniel Lynch or Brady Singer or someone else.

“We're here to win ballgames. Everyone's goal going into the season is win the World Series,” Keller said. “I think we have the talent there. It's just a matter of stepping up when the time comes to win ballgames.”

Witt is almost certain to help in that department.

His major league debut is perhaps the most anticipated in club history, and that's saying something for a franchise that produced George Brett. Witt has raked Cactus League pitching this spring, hitting well over .400 with three highlight-reel home runs, and his slick fielding and daring-do on the base paths make him a legitimate five-tool star.

In fact, he's such a star that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who owns part of the club, keeps tweeting about him.

“Oh, really? I haven't really checked,” Witt said. “He's the man. That's cool.”

Now, the history of baseball is littered with far more successful clubs than Kansas City that entered the season with high expectations and limped home in September.
