TMP-Marian drops three spots to No. 8 in 3A, Smith Center moves up one spot to No. 2 in 2A, undefeated Victoria jumps four spots to No. 2 in 1A Division I, Wheatland-Grinnell is up two to No. 5 and Logan/Palco moves up two to No. 8 in 1A Division II.

Records listed reflect information that was submitted by Monday, September 20. Classifications for this week’s rankings are still based on enrollments from 2020-21.

The Tigers jumped seven spots in the national rankings this week from No. 25 after knocking off No. 10 ranked Colorado Mesa last week. Fort Hays State is now 1-0-1 this season against teams ranked in the Top 10 of the national poll after a draw with then No. 6 Maryville a couple weeks ago, and most recently a win over then No. 10 Colorado Mesa. Maryville is No. 21 in the latest poll, while Colorado Mesa moved down to No. 16. The Tigers have yet another Top 25 matchup in front of them this weekend as they open GAC/MIAA play at No. 23 ranked Rogers State (4-1-1). CLEVELAND (AP) — Yu Chang hit a bases-loaded triple off left fielder Andrew Benintendi’s glove in the first inning, leading Cal Quantrill and the Cleveland Indians to a 4-1 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Ernie Clement homered as the second-place Indians kept Chicago’s magic number for clinching the AL Central at two. Cleveland hosts the White Sox in a five-game series beginning Thursday.

Chang, who has 19 RBIs and 13 extra-base hits in 26 games since being recalled from Triple-A Columbus, hit a line drive and Benintendi slipped on the wet grass in pursuit.

Benintendi made a late jump and the ball tipped off his glove — he looked at his mitt to see if he’d caught the ball as it rolled to the wall -- as Myles Straw, Oscar Mercado and José Ramirez came around.

“I thought he would catch it,” Chang admitted. “I didn’t think that much when I came to bat because I already have an approach in the zone. The ball is just there. I hit the ball.”

Quantrill (7-3) worked 6 2/3 innings, striking out six and allowing one run on Hunter Dozier’s homer in the seventh. The right-hander made his final home start of the year, finishing with a 5-0 record and 2.20 ERA at Progressive Field.

Emmanuel Clase pitched the ninth for his 24th save after Blake Parker and Bryan Shaw combined for a four-out bridge.

“Cal is pitching the baseball very well, mixing his repertoire and attacking hitters differently,” Indians acting manager DeMarlo Hale said. “You look at his line, he got groundball outs, he got flyball outs, punched out six. Just another good effort.”

Daniel Lynch (4-6) allowed four runs on four hits in six innings, walking three, hitting Chang with a pitch and striking out five. The rookie left-hander only gave up one hit after the second, but is winless in five starts since Aug. 23 with three losses.

“We’ve got to find a way to be better coming into the game, and it’s not just Daniel,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “To his credit after that rough start, he did keep us in the game.”

Nicky Lopez doubled in the third to extend his on-base streak to 31 games, equaling the longest single-season run for Kansas City since Billy Butler’s 32-gamer in 2013. Lopez is batting .380 (49 for 129) since the streak began on Aug. 21.

Clement hit his third homer and had a pair of hits. The second baseman also came up big defensively, sprawling onto the grass to rob Lopez with two on and two outs in the seventh.

“Ernie is a very good player, but he’s extra-special when I’m pitching,” Quantrill said. “He’s single-handedly saved me 5-6 runs already this year, so he’s my favorite player on this team.”

Righty Dylan Coleman made his major league debut for Kansas City, surrendering one hit in the eighth.

Royals C Salvador Perez has 46 home runs this season -- two shy of Jorge Soler’s team record set in 2019 -- and sits at 198 for his career. One day earlier, Perez broke Johnny Bench’s MLB record for homers in a year by a player who caught at least 75% of his games. “Salvy is going to have to build a new mantle to display all of his mementos,” Matheny said. “Heck, he might as well build an entire fireplace.”

Royals: C Cam Gallagher (left knee inflammation) was activated from the injured list after missing 16 games. Gallagher went 2 for 7 with two runs and an RBI during a rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha. C Sebastian Rivero was optioned to the Storm Chasers.

Indians: SS Amed Rosario (health and safety protocols) was placed on the COVID-19 injured list, but is expected to return to action Thursday. The transaction was strictly procedural as Rosario had spent the maximum seven days on the bereavement list.

She fell 6-3 in the first set, but battled back for a 6-2 win in the second. Like Lubbers, she also took her tiebreak set by a count of 10-6. Friess battled to a 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 6 position. Frederick was the only Tiger to fall in her singles match by a count of 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 3 position. The Tigers will host Barton (Kan.) Community College in a scrimmage on Friday (Sept. 24) at 3 pm that will not count toward official records. The next official match for the Tigers will be against Bethany College (Kan.) on Tuesday (Sept. 28) next week, also in Hays.

The Tigers had the match clinched when the first three singles matches were done.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6116">Stefany Stemmer</a>&nbsp;rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 1 position. At the No. 5 position,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6117">Heidi Lubbers</a>&nbsp;cruised to a 6-1 first set win but then fell 6-2 in the second. She was able to hang on in the tiebreak set 10-6. Aufdengarten clinched the dual for the Tigers with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4. Diaz also had to force a third set tiebreak to win at No. 2. She fell 6-3 in the first set, but battled back for a 6-2 win in the second. Like Lubbers, she also took her tiebreak set by a count of 10-6. Friess battled to a 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 6 position. Frederick was the only Tiger to fall in her singles match by a count of 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 3 position. The Tigers will host Barton (Kan.) Community College in a scrimmage on Friday (Sept. 24) at 3 pm that will not count toward official records. COLBY – The TMP-Marian girls’ golf team finished
second at Monday's Colby Invitational.

Colby had the top four placers and won their own
tournament by 56 shots over the Monarchs. Anna Starbuck shot a 74 to win the
individual title. She was 17 shots better than teammate Mya Betz who finished
second with a 91.

Alexis Mackey lead the Monarchs with a 97 and
placed fifth. Madalyn Rozean finished sixth with a 99.

⛳ Monarchs girls' second in Colby

CLEVELAND — Salvador Perez hit his 46th home run, breaking Johnny Bench’s record for most by a catcher in a season to highlight the opener, then the Kansas City Royals completed a doubleheader sweep by beating the Cleveland Indians 4-2 Monday night.

Perez hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning of a 7-2 win, topping Bench’s total from 1970 for the highest total by a player who spent at least 75% of his team’s games at catcher.

Perez also moved into a tie for the major league lead in homers with Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Perez leads the majors with 115 RBIs.

“I had never hit 30 in my career,” he said. “So I was looking for 30 homers and 100 RBIs. This is a dream come true.”

Perez’s career high in home runs was 27, which came in both the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Being in the same company with Bench is something else special for the 31-year-old Perez who has been a mainstay for the Royals since reaching the majors in 2011.

“When you see a Hall of Fame catcher, you try to be just like him," Perez said. "I’m going to try my best to be one of those guys.”

Royals manager Mike Matheny considered it an honor to witness the moment.

“It’s just hard to get your head around, to be honest,” Matheny said. “The long history in this game and how many great players have come through. For him to do something that nobody’s done, it’s amazing.”

In the second game, Perez hit an early double before striking out against Anthony Gose, a former outfielder who returned to the majors after a five-year absence as a hard-throwing reliever.

Gose pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one run and one hit with one walk and one strikeout. Of his 39 pitches, seven reached 100 mph.

The 31-year-old Gose last played in the majors in 2016 with Detroit. He spent parts of five years with the Tigers and Toronto before becoming a pitcher.

“It meant a lot to get the opportunity to go out there again. It’s been a while. I’m excited to be able to have the opportunity," Gose said.

Joel Payamps, Domingo Tapia, Jake Brentz. Josh Statamount and Scott Barlow combined on a four-hitter in the second game. Tapia (3-0) struck out four in 1 2/3 innings and Barlow pitched the ninth for his 14th save.

The Royals scored twice off Nick Wittgren (2-8) in the first when Carlos Santana drew a bases-loaded walk and Hunter Dozier added a sacrifice fly.

Kansas City scored in the fourth off Gose on a double by Hanser Alberto and an RBI groundout by Sebastian Rivero.

Alberto added an RBI single in the sixth off Bryan Shaw.

Andrés Giménez and Bobby Bradley homered for Cleveland. The Indians were held to four runs in the two seven-inning games after scoring 11 runs on both Saturday and Sunday in wins over the New York Yankees.

Starting again behind the plate — Perez has seen some time at designated hitter, and started the second game at DH — the durable All-Star drove a 1-2 pitch from Triston McKenzie into the left field bleachers, a drive that traveled 429 feet.

Perez pointed to the sky after crossing home plate and was hugged by several teammates as he entered the dugout. He also singled in the first and made his presence known defensively when he threw out Myles Straw trying to steal second base.

“For a guy who’s so respected in this clubhouse, it was different than your normal home run,” Matheny said.

Said Cleveland interim manager DeMarlo Hale: “Perez is one of those rare individuals to find energy and passion just to keep playing.

“And the offensive year he’s having, it’s even more special. People don’t talk about him in the MVP race, but I’ll tell you what, he’s there in my book,” he said.

Dozier and Andrew Benintendi also hit two-run homers for the Royals in the opener. Dozier hit his 14th homer in the second and added an RBI single in the fourth. Benintendi hit his 16th homer in the fourth.

Brady Singer (5-10), activated from the COVID-19-related injured list before the game, allowed two runs in seven innings.

McKenzie (5-7) gave up all three home runs and allowed seven runs in 4.1 innings.

José Ramírez, the current AL Player of the Week, had a two-run single for Cleveland in the fifth.

RHP Shane Bieber is expected to rejoin Cleveland’s rotation this week. The reigning AL Cy Young winner has been sidelined since June 13 with a strained shoulder. Bieber threw 57 pitches in 3.1 innings for Double-A Akron on Sunday.

⚾ Perez breaks Bench's single-season HR record, Royals sweep doubleheader against Indians

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- It was only fitting that the Baltimore Ravens would put away a comeback win over the Chiefs by running Lamar Jackson right up the middle when Kansas City needed a fourth-down stop to get the ball back.

The Chiefs knew it was coming; the Ravens had been doing it all game.

Nor could the Chiefs stop the run the previous week against the Browns, though some late-game magic from Patrick Mahomes managed to bail them out in Week 1. But when the Kansas City defense allowed Jackson to scamper for a clinching first down with about a minute left Sunday night, it prevented Mahomes from even getting another chance.

The result was a 36-35 loss that ended the Chiefs' streak of 14 consecutive wins in the month of September.

“When guys are in position, you have to make the tackle,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “We have to do a better job getting off blocks. ... We knew they were a very good run team. Guys pushed through it and got us in a position to win the game.”

Ah, yes — the fumble that also kept the Chiefs from kicking a potential winning field goal.

While the Browns and Ravens have exposed the Chiefs' inability to stop the run, and their failure to improve this past offseason in an area that also was a problem last year, the fumble by Clyde Edwards-Helaire following the 2-minute warning rests as much on Kansas City's coaching staff as it does anyone else.

After the Chiefs took over at their own 25 with 3:14 left, Mahomes hit Byron Pringle over the middle for 23 yards. He hit Travis Kelce for 13 yards and again for 7 more, getting the ball to the Baltimore 32.

All of a sudden, Reid and Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy put the ball in the hands of a second-year pro that had struggled all game to find running room rather than keep it in the hands of arguably the NFL's best player.

Edwards-Helaire was promptly stripped of the ball. The Ravens recovered the fumble. Jackson converted on fourth down.

“We got into field-goal range pretty quickly there,” Mahomes said, “and then we were pretty much trying to get down close, to let (Harrison) Butker kick the field goal. And dude made a good play. He was getting blocked and threw his hand out and hit it directly on the ball. We were executing; they made a play. You lose games when teams make plays like that.”

You also lose games when you allow an opponent to run for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Or go 4 for 4 in the red zone, 6 for 11 on third downs and convert their only fourth down. Or take the ball out of the hands of your best player.

“We will never point fingers and say it’s just one person’s loss. That is not how we roll at Kansas City,” Kelce said. "We’ll fix it in the four quarters of football. We’ll fix it.”

Kelce finished with seven catches for 109 yards and a touchdown, giving him 8,066 yards for his career. He joined Rob Gronkowski (8,613) and Jimmy Graham (8,350) as the only active tight ends with at least 8,000 yards receiving.

The Chiefs moved star defensive tackle Chris Jones to defensive end in an effort to improve their pass rush, but on Sunday night he looked like — well, he looked like a defensive tackle trying to play defensive end. He had one tackle, no sacks and failed to put any pressure on Jackson even as the Ravens ran right at him.

The return of defensive end Frank Clark from a hamstring injury didn't do much to help Kansas City's pass rush, either. Daniel Sorensen delivered the only sack on a safety blitz.

“When you miss over 10 tackles in a game, that’s cause for devastation for a defense,” Clark said. "You’ve got to make the tackles, especially when you’re going against a strong offense like the Ravens.”

Tyreek Hill was double and triple covered by the Ravens most of the night, freeing up others in the Kansas City passing game. Pringle had two catches for 63 yards and a score. Mecole Hardman had five catches for 55 yards. Backup tight ends Jordy Fortson and Blake Bell each caught a ball, as did backup running back Jerick McKinnon.

Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu had two interceptions, including a pick-six, in his return from the COVID-19 list. But he also was whistled for a couple of penalties, though one for illegal use of hands was questionable at best.

“We still have a lot of confidence in ourselves, so I don’t think anything has really happened. We just have to play better and make some plays,” he said. “We just need to get back at it and get our confidence back.”

🎧 Defend the Fort Podcast: Tiger Talk

The first ever St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame Class was officially inducted at an enshrinement ceremony at Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center Sunday.

The class is comprised of 10 individuals, one team and a Special Olympics Athlete of the Year.

Officially created last November, the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame recognizes individuals, families and teams that have made a significant impact on sports history in Buchanan County.

The inductees were carefully selected from a large pool of candidates by the St. Joseph Sports Commission, led by chairman Brett Esely.

To be eligible for selection, the individual must have been born in Buchanan County, must have made their sports career or accomplished their feat in Buchanan County or must be contributing to sports in Buchanan County at the present time.

The class includes Lafayette High School graduate and legendary Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder, Benton graduate, Nebraska football legend and former Carolina Panther Mike Rucker, MLB veteran and Central alum Byron Browne, along with two-time Olympic team weightlifter and Benton alum Wes Barnett.

"I want to thank my friends, my family and my teammates," Barnett said. "Really the city of St. Joseph who has always been behind me and supporting me along the way."

Snyder, who retired from coaching at Kansas State in the 2018 season, is also a College Football Hall of Fame inductee. Of all of the accolades and honors Snyder has accumulated over his historic and illustrious career, he says being honored by his hometown this way is the best award he's ever received.

He especially thanks his mother, Marionetta, who raised him in a one-room St. Joseph apartment.

"St. Joe has been so prominent in my life," Snyder said. "I was born here and raised here. And I think about, as you do, people who are truly special in your life. I think it's so neat that you're having this (Hall of Fame). I look at this wonderful group of people here and congratulate each and every one of you."

Also included is Charlie Burri, Missouri Western’s First Athletic Director, Newt Hillyard, the Founder of the Hillyard Companies, Julius Hochman, Father of Boys' Baseball in St. Joseph, two-time Olympic gymnastics medalist Terin Humphrey, Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Henry Iba and softball pioneer Cheri Kempf.

"There's a lot of value in celebrating folks from St. Joseph who have made an incredible impact in sports," said Kempf, who was a 1980 state softball champion at Mid-Buchanan and three-sport athlete at Missouri Western. "Brett (Esely), thanks for hanging in there with me and getting all of the details locked up. And the (selection) committee, I celebrate you. You have a great future in front of you."

The team chosen for the 2021 Hall of Fame Class was the&nbsp;Meierhoffer/St. Jo Frontier Casino Fast Pitch Softball Team from 1997-2003 - a team that won four national titles during that time.

The Special Olympics Athlete of the Year included in the class is Mike Grossman, who medaled in track and field during the 1999 special Olympics.

The Sports Commission had 25 total nominees for its inaugural class. The inductees were selected by an anonymous selection committee.

Every class will include a maximum of 10 individual inductees, and those who aren't inducted are automatically put into a pool of consideration for the next five years.

Anyone can nominate an athlete or team for the St. Joseph Sports Hall of Fame by getting in contact with the St. Joseph Sports Commission.

Snyder inducted into St. Joseph area sport hall of fame

BALTIMORE (AP) — Patrick Mahomes’ flawless September run is over.

The Kansas City quarterback was intercepted late in the third quarter, one of two turnovers by the Chiefs that led to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-nfl-baltimore-kansas-city-chiefs-baltimore-ravens-37d690bfa19a3193132450ba4e069766">a 36-35 loss</a>&nbsp;to Baltimore on Sunday night. It was Kansas City’s first September defeat since Sept. 18, 2016. The Chiefs had won 15 in a row in the month since then.

“Turnovers will kill you in this league, and we had two of them down the stretch, crucial time,” coach Andy Reid said. “So we’ve got to do better.”

Mahomes was 11-0 as a starter in September with 35 touchdown passes and no interceptions. He threw for three more TDs on Sunday, and Kansas City seemed to be rolling along after Tyrann Mathieu picked off Lamar Jackson twice in the first quarter and left the Ravens playing catch-up.

The Chiefs eventually returned the favor with those two giveaways of their own.

Ahead 35-24 but facing third-and-long near midfield, Mahomes tried to throw a pass while being pulled down. It was picked off by Tavon Young, and the Ravens drove 56 yards for a touchdown to make it 35-30.

After a Kansas City punt, Baltimore scored again to take the lead — but the Chiefs were still in good shape when they drove into field goal range as the clock wound down. On second-and-3 from the Baltimore 32, Clyde Edwards-Helaire fumbled the ball away. Kansas City never got it back.

Odafe Oweh, the rookie who forced and recovered the fumble, was drafted by the Ravens in the first round — with a pick they acquired when they traded offensive lineman Orlando Brown to the Chiefs.

“We got into field goal range pretty quickly there,” Mahomes said. “Then we were pretty much just trying to get down as close as we could to let (Harrison) Butker kick the field goal. Dude made a good play. He was getting blocked, he threw his hand out, hit it directly on the ball.”

The turnovers were especially costly on a night the Chiefs allowed 251 yards rushing. Although Kansas City makes the game look incredibly easy sometimes, the defense left the Chiefs vulnerable — and then a couple mistakes cost them.

“When you have the opportunities to tackle, you’ve got to tackle,” Reid said. “We’ve got to do a better job getting off blocks. ... All that said, you have the ball and driving down that last series — what should have been the last series — and we fumbled.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Rookie Jarred Kelenic homered, doubled twice and wrapped up his impressive series, leading the Seattle Mariners over the Kansas City Royals 7-1 on Sunday.

Kelenic also walked and scored twice as the Mariners remained four games behind Toronto for the second AL wild-card spot.

“As a team, we swung the bat really well,” Kelenic said. “It wasn’t just me. (Starting pitcher and fellow rookie) Logan (Gilbert) had a heck of a day today. Overall, it’s what we needed to bounce into Oakland.”

Kelenic, who entered the season as one of the top minor league prospects in baseball, went 5 for 9 with three home runs, two doubles, three walks and seven RBIs in the three-game series.

“A nice job all the way around,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “The key to the game was early in the game. It’s a hot day here. Your starting pitcher comes out and takes control and sets the tempo."

“The offense was on top of it. It’s not just the first inning. We kept constant pressure on them. We needed to win this series. We won this series. We’ll head to Oakland and see what happens there.”

Gilbert (6-5) cruised through seven innings, allowing one run on three hits. He walked one and struck out five while snapping his three-game losing streak.

“I felt pretty good,” Gilbert said. “I felt like I could work everything in there. It was really hot. I was trying to just force contact and get right after them. With our defense, things usually go well if they put the ball in play if it’s not hard contact.”

The Royals were ensured their fifth straight losing season. They won the 2015 World Series, went 81-81 the next year and haven’t finished above .500 since then.

Royals star Salvador Perez, who came into the game tied with Jose Abreu with 113 RBIs and second in home runs with 45, was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts.

Jackson Kowar (0-4) struggled again, giving up five runs on seven hits in four innings. He walked three and struck out three.

“He just had trouble getting into any rhythm,” manager Mike Matheny said. “We’re normally talking about fastball command, but at lot of times he has the safety net with the changeup. He had trouble finding it in the zone too. He didn’t have a strike pitch to go to.”

The Mariners jumped on Kowar early, though as was the case this whole series, they left runs on the table.

Ty France started it with a one-out double and back-to-back walks to Abraham Toro and Mitch Haniger loaded the bases. Kelenic lined a two-run double off the wall in right center, but Kowar worked around further trouble.

The Mariners added another run on an RBI single by France.

Kelenic led off the third with a 420-foot home run to right center. One out later, Jake Bauers hit a 460-foot home run.

The Mariners got another run in the fifth on a single by Dylan Moore that drove in Kelenic. Haniger homered in the ninth.

Whit Merrifield doubled in the Kansas City sixth and scored on a single by Nicky Lopez.

The Mariners play at Oakland on Monday night. LHP Tyler Anderson (1-1, 3.67 ERA) will get the start for Seattle.
