COLBY – The Hays High softball team ended their busy week of four doubleheaders, all on the road, in five days with a sweep in Colby Friday. After winning game one 20-6, the Indians took the second contest 19-4 to move to 10-6 on the season.
The Indians are scheduled to play at home for the first time since April 19th on Tuesday when they host Liberal in a doubleheader at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.
Game 1: Hays 20, Colby 6 (5 innings)
Lainey Hardman had four hits including two home runs and drove in five runs in
the run-rule victory. Riley Dreher also had four hits including a home run and
drove in four.
After both teams scored a run in the first, the Indians took the lead for good with another run in the second then nine in the top of the third on a Hardman three-run homer and a Dreher two-run shot, the first of her career.
Colby scored four in the bottom of the third, but Hays quickly answered with a seven-run fourth which was started with a solo homer from Hardman.
Aubree Thomas (5-4) allowed four earned runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in the complete game victory.
Game 2: Hays 20, Colby 4 (3 innings)
The Indians broke open a one-run game with a 15-run third inning. The first
five runs scored before the first out was recorded.
Following a single and a walk, Avery Solida singled to left driving in the first run. The Indians added the next run on an error, then a walk and back-to-back base hits from Dezarae Schmidt and Lainey Hardman pushed the lead to 9-3. Madyson Sennett later added a three-run homer.
Hays led 4-0 after an inning and half only to see Colby hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second to make it a one-run game.
Schmidt, Morgen Berry, Elle Dreiling and Solioda all had multi-hit games. Berry and Sennett both drove in three runs with Schmidt, Riley Dreher and Ashlyn Zimmer all driving in two.
Riley Dreher (5-2) allowed two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks and picked up the win.
