ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Fort Hays State track and field team picked up three All-American honors, broke one school record and had one move on to the finals on day two of the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships (May 27).
Nolan Churchman lifted his third All-American trophy after placing fifth in the decathlon with a school-record 7,192 points. He bested his previous PR by 73 points after posting personal-bests in four of the 10 events. The sophomore's top event on day two was the 110m hurdles, where he compiled 783 points after a personal-best 15.56. He also hit personal records in the discus (115-6, 568 points) and the javelin (154-11, 548 points). Nolan's fifth-place finish is tied for the best-ever placement at a DII national meet for an FHSU multi-athlete and he is the first Tiger to place in the decathlon at the national level during the DII era.
Mattie Rossi finished the heptathlon in ninth place with 5,132 points, just six points shy of reaching the podium. Rossi will receive second team All-American accolades for her performance, the fourth All-American award in her career. Her best event of the day was the 800m run, where she was third-fastest in the field with a personal-best time of 2:16.93 (866 points).
Rossi later ran in the 100m hurdles prelims, posting a finals-qualifying time of 13.92 to finish third in her heat and eighth overall. She will run in both the 100m hurdles finals and the 400m hurdles finals on Saturday.
Lyric Holman earned second team All-America honors in the 200m dash after finishing 12th in the prelims with a time of 23.93. It was her sixth All-America award all-time. The Junction City, Kan. junior will wrap up the week in the 100m dash finals Saturday afternoon.
Ethan Lang ran in the 800m prelims on Friday, finishing 22nd with a time of 1:51.69.
The men's 4x400m relay team of Hayden Albright, Jack Pakkebier, Ethan Lang, Nolan Churchman placed 13th in the prelims with a time of 3:16.17.
Eight Tigers will compete on the final day of the Championships on Saturday, including five in field events and three in running events.
