'REEL' FOOTBALL: Images from Indians' playoff win

HOISINGTON – The TMP-Marian Monarchs used a quick start and
solid special teams to knock of the fourth-rank Hoisington Cardinals Friday night
and advance to the 2A state quarterfinals with a 36-27 win.

TMP (8-2) could not have asked for a better state Friday
night.

They opened the game with football and strung together a nine-play
drive that covered 66-yard drive that was capped off by a three-yard Bryce Seib
touchdown run.

After forcing a Hoisington (8-2) three-and-out the TMP offense
came right&nbsp; back on the field and drove down
the field and capped off a six-play 58-yard drive with an 18-yard Griffin
Schumacher touchdown run on fourth down to give TMP a 13-0 lead with a little
more than three minutes and 20 seconds left in the first quarter.

Hoisington was able to get their offense going and cut the
TMP lead to 13-6 early in the second quarter on a one-yard Legend Robinson
touchdown run.

It appeared at that point that Hoisington had all the momentum
but TMP’s Kade Harris swung the game right back into TMP’s favorite with a
79-yard kickoff return for a touchdown giving TMP a 20-6 lead. 

After forcing another Hoisington punt TMP was able to find
the endzone one more time before the end of the first half with just over five
minutes to play when Harris scored his first of two rushing touchdowns to put
TMP up 26-6 heading into halftime.

Out of the halftime break Hoisington put together a seven-play
drive that was capped off by Robinson’s second of three touchdowns and they
added a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Wyatt Wikum to Leyton Haxton
made it a one score game at 26-20 with just under a minute left in the third
quarter.

The Monarchs opened the fourth quarter with a touchdown
drive of their own to go back on top 33-20 when Harris broke free for a 32-yard
touchdown.

Robinson scored his final touchdown with 3:44 left in the
fourth quarter to finish off a 12-play drive making it 33-27 TMP.

After a 52-yard kickoff return from Harris that would set up
a 37-yard field goal from Jace Wentling giving TMP the 36-27 lead with 2:39 to
play.

A Mark Rack interception on Hoisington’s final drive sealed
the game for TMP as they hold on for the 36-27 win.

The TMP win over Hoisington snapped an eight-game losing
streak at the hands of the Cardinals and it ended Hoisington’s nine-game home
playoff win streak and their 24-game home win streak.

Harris led TMP with 146-yards on the ground. Seib added 63 rushing
yards.

Robinson scored three-rushing touchdowns in the losing
effort.

TMP will host Kingman in the 2A quarterfinals next week.

🏈TMP rides quick start to playoff win over Hoisington

The Hays High Indians played a tenth football in a single season for just the ninth time in school history as the Indians visited Andover on Friday. The defenses reigned supreme in the first half. Each team forced a turnover on downs in the others territory. Hays went three and out, but the Trojans missed a 25 yard field goal to score the first points.

The teams again traded turnover on downs. Following Andover's second one, Hays went 10 plays and 57 yards to score the first points of the game with 1:37 left in the half. The Indians converted on a fourth down and third down on the drive. Jaren Kanak scored from three yards out.&nbsp;

Andover went to the air for their final drive of the half, driving to the 27 yard line before Gavin Meyers recorded a 14 yard sack. The following play the Trojans ran to the 20 yard line where Iden Balman forced a fumble that was recovered by Dalton Dale.

The Indian defense stayed stout in the second half, forcing Andover to punt on their first three possessions. Hays took advantage of the second and third punt by scoring on a pair of Kanak runs. Kanak first scored on a 35 yard run with 4:37 left in the third quarter for a 12-0 advantage. His third and final score came on a 24 yard run and an 18-0 lead with 2:56 left on the fourth quarter clock.

The lone Andover touchdown came on a 57 yard pass with 2:56 left in the game for the final difference of 18-6.

Jaren Kanak rushed for 190 yards on 26 carries. Roy Moroni rushed for 71 yards. The Hays defense recorded five sacks, three by Gavin Meyers.

Hays improves to 8-2. Andover ends their season at 7-3.

It is just the third time in program history Hays will play 11 games in a season. 1993 and 1984 were the other two seasons.

Hays will play at Maize next week. The Eagles beat Bishop Carroll 28-21. Also in 5A West, Kapaun beat Maize South 37-21 and Wichita Northwest ran around Salina Central 66-21 for a matchup next week of the Crusaders and Grizzlies.

With this win, the Tigers put themselves in position to play for the GAC regular season title on Saturday against Southern Nazarene.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State landed three players on the 2021 All-MIAA Women's Soccer Team, released on Thursday.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6216">Emily Hutchings</a>&nbsp;received second-team honors, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6220">Reilly Madden</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6231">Deonna Wellbrock</a>&nbsp;each garnered third-team honors. The all-conference team is selected by head coaches from the MIAA. Hutchings earned a second-team selection as a midfielder. She has a team-leading five assists for the season, which ranks eighth in the MIAA. She also has two goals to her credit and is tied for second on the team in points generated for the season with nine. She provided the game-winning goal in the 2-0 win over Washburn last week, which helped the Tigers clinch a spot in the MIAA Tournament. Madden received a third-team selection at defender. She has been a model of endurance for the Tigers on the back row this season, playing every minute of 16 out of 18 contests. She has 1,647 minutes logged this season of a possible 1,694. Five playoff games on tap Friday night on Eagle Radio stations

LAWRENCE -&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks kicked off the 2021-22 season by hosting Emporia State for an exhibition game on Wednesday, beating the Hornets, 86-60 behind four players in double figures, led by Ochai Agbaji’s 17 points.

Along with Agbaji, David McCormack (16 points), Remy Martin (15 points) and Christian Braun (10 points) scored in double figures, while Martin led the team in assists with four and McCormack led the way with eight rebounds.

As a unit, the Jayhawks 47.1 percent (33-of-70) from the floor in the game and 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from beyond the arc. Kansas connected on all of its free throw attempts (11-of-11) in the game, including 6-of-6 from McCormack.

Kansas scored 42 points in the paint and got 37 points from the bench in the game. The Jayhawks forced the Hornets into 14 turnovers, which Kansas turned into 20 points.

Kansas controlled the pace throughout the first half, behind a team-leading 14 points from Ochai Agbaji on 5-of-7 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Paired with Agbaji, Remy Martin made his KU debut by scoring 13 points in the first half on 6-of-8 from the field.

🏀 Jayhawks outpace Hornets in exhibition Wednesday

TOPEKA – The Kansas Volleyball Association has announced their 2021 State All Tournament Teams selected during the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s State Championships held on October 29 and 30. 

A State All Tournament Team was selected for each classification and each is comprised of 12 players.

Victoria’s Kassi Weber was named to the 1A Division I team. It’s the second
time Weber’s been on the all state tournament team. Weber and the Knights finished fourth last weekend in Dodge City. 

Wheatland-Grinnell’s Livia
Schultz receives the same honor in 1A Division II.

TOPEKA – The Kansas Volleyball Association has announced their 2021 State All Tournament Teams selected during the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s State Championships held on October 29 and 30. A State All Tournament Team was selected for each classification and each is comprised of 12 players.Victoria’s Kassi Weber was named to the 1A Division I team. It’s the second

INDIANAPOLIS – Fort Hays State Men's Soccer remains No. 9 in the second edition of the NCAA Super Region rankings, released on Wednesday. The Tigers remain the only team from the GAC/MIAA within the top 12 of the Super Region 3 rankings. Maryville University moves to No. 1 in the Super Region this week, a team that the Tigers tied in a neutral site contest earlier this season in Kansas City. University of Indianapolis slipped to No. 2 after taking its first loss of the season last week against Maryville.&nbsp; There was more jostling in the No. 3 through No. 8 positions, but all among teams that remain ahead of FHSU in the rankings. Positions 9 through 12 remain the same, led by FHSU. Fort Hays State is looking to make a ninth-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and the Tigers own the longest active streak for consecutive years in the NCAA Division II National Tournament (8). The Tigers played tough competition outside of GAC/MIAA play, which is helping boost their strength of schedule formula for the Super Region Rankings. Along with its tie against the top team in the Super Region earlier this season, FHSU defeated Colorado Mesa, which ranks No. 5 in Super Region 4. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets added some depth to the offensive line, acquiring guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif from the Kansas City Chiefs for tight end Daniel Brown ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline.

Duvernay-Tardiff is a licensed medical doctor who opted out of last season to work on the front lines in the battle against COVID-19. 

He was active for the first time Monday night for the Chiefs’ 20-17 win over the New York Giants but didn’t play. 

The 30-year-old offensive lineman from Canada has played in 60 NFL games and was the starting right guard for Kansas City in its 31-20 victory over San Francisco in the Super Bowl during the 2019 season.

The teams made the announcement hours before the NFL’s trade deadline. 

The move gives Kansas City’s struggling defense some much-needed help, though Ingram did sit out Pittsburgh’s win over Cleveland on Sunday with what the team called a groin injury.

 The 32-year-old Ingram spent the first nine years of his career with the Los Angeles Chargers before signing a one-year deal with Pittsburgh in July.

He had a pair of assists and chipped in a goal during the 6-0 blowout at OBU, then scored the second goal in a 2-0 win at Harding. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes lamented two more turnovers and Chiefs coach Andy Reid a multitude of penalties, and just about everyone that stepped out of the Kansas City locker room vowed to turn around what's been a disappointing season.

It almost sounded as if they'd lost to the Giants on Monday night.

Instead, the scuffling Chiefs rallied behind two fourth-quarter field goals from Harrison Butker, including the go-ahead 34-yarder with 1:07 left, and beat downtrodden New York 20-17 to even their record after eight games.

“Listen, everything is not beautiful right now but we're fighting through it,” Reid said. “Our guys battled. They didn't give up on each other. They kept working at a time you could have just thrown your hands up and say, ‘Man, things are just not working the way they're supposed to work.' So we'll build on that. Let's keep going.”

Mahomes threw for 275 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Chiefs, who along with two turnovers committed 12 penalties for 103 yards. Tyreek Hill had 12 catches for 94 yards and a score, and Mecole Hardman added five catches for 63 yards, including a 24-yard catch-and-run on the final drive that set Butker up for the go-ahead kick.

“The guys are battling and trying to find ways to win,” Mahomes said, “and tonight we did.”

Daniel Jones had 222 yards passing with two touchdowns and a pick for the Giants (2-6), but he also was sacked three times, including twice after the Chiefs kicked off with just over a minute left in the game.

It was just the fourth win in 15 meetings for the Chiefs and their first since the 2013 season.

“We have to eliminate the mistakes we made down the stretch," Giants coach Joe Judge said. "We cant allow a team like this to have extra opportunities. We can't rob ourselves a chance to have opportunities of our own.”

The Chiefs actually diced up the Giants on their opening drive, but for the fourth time this season Mahomes had a pass bounce off his intended target for an interception — this time, backup running back Jerick McKinnon. It was the seventh consecutive game Mahomes had thrown a pick and his league-leading 10th of the season.

It also was an ominous sign for an offense that has done little to resemble its high-flying reputation.

The Chiefs did score moments later, after Jones threw the ball right back to them, but they struggled to get into their familiar offensive rhythm. Mahomes seemed to be in a different playbook than his wide receivers, tight end Travis Kelce was rendered a non-factor by the New York defense and penalties began to pile up.

In fact, the Chiefs turned almost entirely to the ground when they marched for their second touchdown. It was seldom-used Derrick Gore that carried seven times for 43 yards before breaking the goal line for his first career score.

The Giants — hardly dynamic in their own right — were the ones that often moved the ball at will.

Without running back Saquon Barkley and wide receiver Kenny Golladay, both still sidelined with injuries, Jones was able to lean on Booker and his backup receivers to march 85 yards for an early touchdown — most of it coming when John Ross III beat safety Daniel Sorensen for a 50-yard catch that rendered his pass interference penalty moot.

The Giants added an 86-yard drive later in the first half that produced a field goal. And early in the fourth quarter, Evan Engram beat Sorensen to the pylon for a touchdown catch that gave the Giants a 17-14 lead.

Somehow, the scuffling Chiefs found a way to claw back into the game.

They ground their way to a field goal midway through the fourth quarter. Then, their much-maligned defense held on third down and Giants punter Riley Dixon sent a wobbler out of bounds to give them prime field position.

Mahomes and Co. finished the comeback by putting Butker in position for the go-ahead field goal.

“We knew it was going to be a challenge. No win is given to you,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said. “You have to take that approach. It's a battle every drive, every play. You have to execute at a high level to get past your opponent.”

Judge said two of the timeouts New York wasted were the result of headsets that kept malfunctioning, and that it's a problem that has happened in just about every game this season. “There was one point we tried to go back to the old equipment and were told we couldn't do that,” Judge said. “I don't want to make this all about headsets. That's now why we lost. But I'll say this: Whoever is in charge of this, they better fix it fast.”

Giants WRs Sterling Shepard (quad) and Dante Pettis (shoulder) left in the second quarter. WR Kadarius Toney departed in the fourth quarter with a thumb injury.

Chiefs WR Marcus Kemp was evaluated for a concussion in the second quarter. Kemp returned to the game and was soon flagged for making a helmet-to-helmet tackle on Toney as he fielded a punt.

The Chiefs added longtime center Tim Grunhard to their Hall of Fame during a halftime ceremony. Grunhard started 164 of 169 games and appeared in the Pro Bowl once during an 11-year career spent entirely in Kansas City.

The Giants head home to face the Raiders on Sunday.
