TOPEKA — In 2019, Greeley County High
 School suffered its worst season in years, finishing winless and 
struggling week in and week out to field a complete team.

At the time, the school was playing 
eight-man football, but dwindling interest in trying out for football 
forced a remarkable seven forfeits throughout a nine-game schedule. In 
the two games they were able to play, they lost 44-0 against Rawlins 
County and 68-20 against Cheylin.&nbsp;

After conversations about the future 
of the program, the school made the move to six-man football last year. 
This year the team finished 2-5, and while the team may not be winning a
 lot, the players are having fun again.

“At least the kids are getting to 
play there, right?” said Greeley County High School athletic director 
Greg Cook. “It keeps interest in fall activities. It allows the kids to 
still play football and get all the benefits of being part of a team.”

High school football participation 
has steadily declined over the past decade as concerns around head 
trauma and other injuries escalate. Add that to the declining population
 in rural cities and towns, and many schools across Kansas are facing 
similar challenges to Greeley County.

Six-man football first popped up in 
Kansas during the 1960s but did not gain widespread traction and 
eventually disappeared. In 2014, faced with very few options to keep 
their program afloat, Weskan became the first Kansas team to play 
six-man since 2003.

Since then, the six-man ranks have 
risen to 15 schools operating under the Six-man Football Association. 
The association culminates each year with the Wild West Bowl state 
championship game in Dodge City.

The participating schools have 
primarily been in the Northwest and Southwest parts of Kansas. Burrton, 
in central Kansas, is the furthest eastern school, but that could soon 
change.

In September, the Kansas State High 
School Activities Association officially sanctioned six-man football 
following a unanimous vote of their board of directors. According to the
 association, 26 teams will play six-man next fall.

Those schools’ total enrollment for 
ninth, 10th and 11th grade must range from 19 to 55 students, although 
some in that range have chosen to play eight-man football. In addition 
to an official schedule and playoffs, Cook said the association’s 
sanction will help smaller schools like his.

“The schools that are borderline that
 are hanging on to eight-man — if they should happen to lose some 
students or have some small classes — it’ll be easier for them to move 
down to six-man,” he said.

Altoona-Midway, Chase, Chetopa, 
Ingalls, Southern Coffey County, Centre, Peabody-Burns, Southern Cloud, 
Tescott, Waverly, Wetmore and Triplains-Brewster will all be part of the
 newly sanctioned division next year, the state high school athletics 
association announced. Many of the schools switching to the six-man 
division hail from the eastern side of the state.&nbsp;

Those teams have a combined 19 wins 
and 72 losses this fall. Chase and Chetopa took forfeits because of low 
participation, and Centre was unable to field an eight-man team and 
played some six-man games.

Peabody-Burns was exploring a six-man move this summer. Only Waverly had a winning record last season.

“The game of football is great for 
kids, it’s great for communities and it is safer than it’s ever been,” 
said Mark Lentz, assistant executive director for the state High School 
Activities Association.

A full high school schedule is nine football games. Last year, six-man squads averaged 6.2 games.

In states like Colorado, Texas and 
Nebraska, the six-man modifications to the standard 11-man rules have 
resulted in high-scoring games. This trend has held true in Kansas so 
far.

The games are heavy on offense and, 
like eight-man football, can be extremely high scoring, with some games 
eclipsing 200 combined points scored. Besides the score and shorter 
field (80 yards vs the normal 100 yards) six-man is unique to both 
eight-person and 11-person football.&nbsp;

However, the aim of the game is still the same, Lentz said.

“Football is football,” he said. “It 
just looks a little bit different when you have six players on a side 
versus 11 but it’s still all about blocking and tackling and the 
fundamentals that you learn from playing a team sport.”

One noticeable rule change is that to
 advance the ball forward on a run play, the ball must be exchanged 
between players at least once. As a result, the running back will 
oftentimes receive the snap and immediately toss the ball to the 
quarterback, giving them the choice to either run or pass the ball.

Rather than the typical 10 yards needed for a first down, six-man football requires teams to advance the ball 15 yards.

Scoring is also unique, with extra 
points worth two when kicked as opposed to one. Field goals are worth 
more as well — four points earned during a successful kick versus the 
typical three.

The other big rule change: Everyone 
on the field is eligible to receive the ball. That includes the center. 
Though three players must be on the line of scrimmage on many calls the 
center will be the lone lineman — and the defense will still have to 
wonder if he’s going out to receive a pass.

“It’s taken me four years to finally 
figure out some of the little nuances about the game of six-man,” said 
Jon Schnable, football head coach and athletic director for Rolla High 
School. “At first, I thought if you have a big-sized team, you can get 
away with a lot of things, but if you look at the six-man schools, their
 kids’ size isn’t a priority, it’s speed. If you’ve got some speed on 
your team, you can win a lot of ballgames.

While the number of players and 
various rules may differ, advocates of the six-man variety will take 
what they can get, especially when participation numbers continue to 
drop across the country.

According to data from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aspeninstitute.org/">Aspen Institute</a> and the <a target="_blank" href="https://nfhs.org/">National Federation of State High School Associations</a>,
 from 2008-19 to 2018-19 the total number of youths aged 6 to 18 playing
 tackle football fell by more than 620,000. Participation nationwide now
 sits at just over 1 million high school players.

Over that same decade attendance at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncaa.org/championships/statistics/ncaa-football-attendance">college</a> and professional football also declined.

However, there is optimism among some
 that the annual declines in participation appear to be leveling off for
 now. While COVID-19 made data for 2020 difficult to collect, in 2019 
high school football participation only dropped by 2,489 students.

Previous years saw declines of 23,311, 20,540 and 30,829 students playing football.

“These (2019) numbers suggest to us 
that parents are appreciative of the risk minimization efforts that have
 been put in place,” said Karissa Niehoff, director of the National 
Federation of State High School Associations. “Every state has enacted 
rules that limit the amount of contact before the season and during 
practice, and every state has established concussion protocols and 
laws.”

Kansas has also seen the drop in 
participation level off recently with football participation hovering in
 the high 14,000-student range since 2016. In 2020, however, the state 
high school activates association recorded the first notable decrease in
 participation since that year.

Still, other research shows <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0277953618307202">increasing parental concerns about concussion risks</a>. This raises concerns for future participation across the country and in Kansas.

For example, some have suggested implementing age-based restrictions on physical contact in the sport.

In a <a target="_blank" href="https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/143/5/e20182402?casa_token=1LUpwzsJF8YAAAAA%3AIoCBCMFs-5IuTjXhBPM5J-856x44gwgkAH0bpE87Wa07EiwZ-rBHOppsO-dK9xeibl-yl2YhsMif">2019 study of the favorability of an age cap</a>,
 several researchers wrote, “US parents are willing to accept age limits
 on tackling in youth football.” They added that the organizations 
responsible for shaping public discourse about the topic, like the 
American Academy of Pediatrics, “may find it useful to consider US 
parents’ attitudes regarding age limits on tackling, alongside research 
quantifying the risk of tackling, when they revisit this topic.”

As the first team to bring six-man football back to Kansas, Weskan has seen it evolve and grow over the years.

Brett Clow, athletic director and 
head coach of Weskan’s football team, said he expects six-man football’s
 growth to continue. Like any changes to a sport with deep roots in many
 communities across the state, six-man football has its doubters who 
believe only 11-man football to be “real football,” but Clow said with 
the sport under the pressure it is, six-man is an important alternative.

“When you look at… some of these 
small towns fighting to keep football, this is now another option,” he 
said. “If a school is thinking about it, I would only say how great it’s
 been for us and that it is worth at least giving it a shot.”

Clow also said he was excited to see 
the influx of new teams after the state association sanctioned the 
six-man games and hopes there could be as many as 40 such teams in the 
state one day.

The format, he said, can help schools
 that haven’t experienced much past success, like Natoma High School, 
which won the six-man state title this year after not having won a 
single playoff game for 47 years.

“It’s really cool for teams like that
 and schools like that to have success for the first time,” Clow said. 
“I think once people do see it and schools start participating in it, 
they’ll realize how much fun it is and that the kids really enjoy it.”

 from 2008-19 to 2018-19 the total number of youths aged 6 to 18 playing
 tackle football fell by more than 620,000. Participation nationwide now
 sits at just over 1 million high school players.Over that same decade attendance at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncaa.org/championships/statistics/ncaa-football-attendance">college</a> and professional football also declined.However, there is optimism among some
 that the annual declines in participation appear to be leveling off for
 now. While COVID-19 made data for 2020 difficult to collect, in 2019 
high school football participation only dropped by 2,489 students.Previous years saw declines of 23,311, 20,540 and 30,829 students playing football.“These (2019) numbers suggest to us 
that parents are appreciative of the risk minimization efforts that have
 been put in place,” said Karissa Niehoff, director of the National 
Federation of State High School Associations. “Every state has enacted 
rules that limit the amount of contact before the season and during 
practice, and every state has established concussion protocols and 
laws.”Kansas has also seen the drop in 
participation level off recently with football participation hovering in
 the high 14,000-student range since 2016. In 2020, however, the state 
high school activates association recorded the first notable decrease in
 participation since that year.Still, other research shows <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0277953618307202">increasing parental concerns about concussion risks</a>. parents’ attitudes regarding age limits on tackling, alongside research 
quantifying the risk of tackling, when they revisit this topic.”<h2>‘Fighting to keep football’</h2>As the first team to bring six-man football back to Kansas, Weskan has seen it evolve and grow over the years.Brett Clow, athletic director and 
head coach of Weskan’s football team, said he expects six-man football’s
 growth to continue. Like any changes to a sport with deep roots in many
 communities across the state, six-man football has its doubters who 
believe only 11-man football to be “real football,” but Clow said with 
the sport under the pressure it is, six-man is an important alternative.“When you look at… some of these 
small towns fighting to keep football, this is now another option,” he 
said. “If a school is thinking about it, I would only say how great it’s
 been for us and that it is worth at least giving it a shot.”Clow also said he was excited to see 
the influx of new teams after the state association sanctioned the 
six-man games and hopes there could be as many as 40 such teams in the 
state one day.The format, he said, can help schools
 that haven’t experienced much past success, like Natoma High School, 
which won the six-man state title this year after not having won a 
single playoff game for 47 years.“It’s really cool for teams like that
 and schools like that to have success for the first time,” Clow said. 
“I think once people do see it and schools start participating in it, 
they’ll realize how much fun it is and that the kids really enjoy it.”

UNDATED (AP) - The NCAA is setting the stage for a dramatic restructuring of college sports that will give each of its three divisions the power to govern itself.

Approval of a new, streamlined constitution is expected in January with minimal consternation or conflict.

The next phase of the NCAA’s transformation figures to be more difficult: A reshaping of Division I that will tackle revenue distribution, how rules are made and enforced, access to the most-high profile and lucrative NCAA events —- such as the men’s basketball tournament — and just how big the tent should be at the&nbsp;<a href="https://go.shopyourlikes.com/pi/0378644309fa248d11511dfd89aaca1399a94ed6?afId=725745&amp;afPlacementId=18207" target="_blank">top&nbsp;</a>of college sports.

“So those are the things that we’re really going to have to get to the granular spot, and some of those are going to be very difficult conversations to have,” said West Virginia&nbsp;<a href="https://go.shopyourlikes.com/pi/2697f4d035e823a1bd3799c27ffaee23634c2331?afId=725745&amp;afPlacementId=18207" target="_blank">athletic&nbsp;</a>director Shane Lyons, who is the chairman of the Division I Council and a member of the committee that trimmed the bedrock constitution of the 115-year-old organization.

The NCAA released on Monday a draft of an 18 1/2-page constitution, cut down from 43 pages over the last three months at the direction of President Mark Emmert.

The cutting of NCAA red tape comes in a year that has brought a tempest of change to college sports. Athletes have more financial freedom than ever before. Conference realignment has swept through the most powerful leagues while also shuffling lineups deep into Division I. Meanwhile, the expansion of the College Football Playoff promises to bring yet another revenue windfall to those at the&nbsp;<a href="https://go.shopyourlikes.com/pi/0378644309fa248d11511dfd89aaca1399a94ed6?afId=725745&amp;afPlacementId=18207" target="_blank">top&nbsp;</a>of the NCAA&nbsp;<a href="https://go.shopyourlikes.com/pi/754bb2073382be788e752570844be6bfdc48ef73?afId=725745&amp;afPlacementId=18207" target="_blank">food&nbsp;</a>chain.

Changing the constitution is the first step in determining the NCAA’s ultimate role in the changing landscape.

“This constitution is not for today and tomorrow,” Lyons said. “It’s for 10 years from now, 20 years from now. What’s, potentially, the association going to look like?”

The rewritten constitution focuses more on the NCAA’s broad goals of athlete welfare and&nbsp;<a href="https://go.shopyourlikes.com/pi/2697f4d035e823a1bd3799c27ffaee23634c2331?afId=725745&amp;afPlacementId=18207" target="_blank">athletics&nbsp;</a>as part of an academic experience instead of governing procedures and operations, both of which have come under increasing criticism.

The proposal specifically notes that athletes should be allowed to compensated for the use of their name, image and likeness — something in place only since July — but stands fast on barring&nbsp;<a href="https://go.shopyourlikes.com/pi/722f06f46141775ad5420f855aa1f7f252ffddc8?afId=725745&amp;afPlacementId=18207" target="_blank">schools&nbsp;</a>from paying athletes to play.

The document still needs to go to membership for feedback after next week’s constitutional convention, and it could be amended before it is put before the full membership for a vote in January.

Emmert called the constitutional convention in August, not long after the Supreme Court hammered the NCAA in a ruling that left the association vulnerable to further legal challenges and in need of deregulation.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 166 yards and a touchdown, Kansas City relentlessly blitzed the Packers' Jordan Love in his highly anticipated first start in place of Aaron Rodgers, and the Chiefs held off Green Bay 13-7 on Sunday.

Rodgers tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week,&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/explainer-rodgers-and-how-nfls-covid-19-protocols-work">forcing the reigning MVP</a>&nbsp;to miss his first game since the 2017 season.&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/packers-jordan-love-prepared-step-absent-rodgers">Love responded&nbsp;</a>by going 19 of 34 for 190 yards with a touchdown and an interception, both of them coming in the fourth quarter when the Packers were trying to rally from a 13-0 deficit against the defending AFC champs.

Love's touchdown pass to Allen Lazard with 4:49 left gave Green Bay a chance. But Mahomes threw a dart to Tyreek Hill on third-and-10 near midfield with less than two minutes left for a first down that allowed the Chiefs to run out the clock.

Travis Kelce had five catches for 68 yards and a touchdown for the Chiefs (5-4), who have won their three of their last four games despite a problematic offense. They finished with just 237 yards against Green Bay.

The Packers (7-2) only managed 301 yards off offense as their seven-game winning streak came to an end. Green Bay also fell to 6-12-1 without Rodgers since 2008.

More than any quarterback or offense, the difference in the first half was Green Bay's special teams.

Mason Crosby yanked a 40-yard field-goal attempt in the first quarter. He had a 37-yarder blocked in the second period. And when the Packers punted later in the half, one of their downfield blockers accidentally touched the ball with his toe and the Chiefs recovered, eventually turning it into a chip-shot field-goal.

The Packers nearly did the same thing when Amari Rodgers muffed another punt early in the second half.

The officials weren't a whole lot better. They whiffed on the first-half punt — it took the Chiefs challenging the call for it to be reversed — and referee Shawn Smith had to stop the game numerous times to adjust the clock.

It probably would have ruined any offensive flow had the Chiefs and Packers not done it on their own.

The Chiefs, whose high-flying offense has turned heads on the way to three straight AFC title games, went three-and-out on their first two drives of the second half. The Packers also went three-and-out to start the second half, then watched as Love got sacked by Tyrann Mathieu on third down to force a punt on their next possession.

Green Bay finally put together a solid drive early in the fourth quarter, when Love completed seven straight passes. But after back-to-back incompletions, Love threw a pass toward Davante Adams — who was back from his own positive COVID-19 test last week — that was picked off by L'Jarius Sneed near the Kansas City goal line.

The Packers scored on their next drive, but the Chiefs made sure it happened too late to matter.

There was plenty of support for Rodgers in the Arrowhead Stadium crowd. Not only were No. 12 jerseys plentiful, one fan held a sign that read, “We Stand With Rodgers.” The embattled quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/health-care-company-ends-relationship-aaron-rodgers">has been sharply criticized</a>&nbsp;for claiming to be “immunized' against COVID-19 despite never getting vaccinated. Chiefs: RT Lucas Niang hurt his ribs in the first half. He was already starting in place of Mike Remmers (knee), forcing third-stringer Andrew Wylie to finish the game.

However, the Jennies were only able to net one goal with about two minutes remaining in the first half. The Jennies added another goal just a few minutes into the second half. The Tigers would not go away without a fight as they put together a furious rally late to shock the Jennies. STORRS, Conn. - The fourth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team tuned up for the 2021-22 season with an exhibition contest at Division I powerhouse UConn Sunday afternoon (Nov. 7), with the second-ranked Huskies pulling away early en route to a 111-47 victory. It was the second-ever meeting between the Tigers and Huskies. The Tigers hung around with the annual national championship contenders in the second and third quarters, scoring 36 points across that 20-minute span while allowing 46. STORRS, Conn. - The fourth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team tuned up for the 2021-22 season with an exhibition contest at Division I powerhouse UConn Sunday afternoon (Nov. 7), with the second-ranked Huskies pulling away early en route to a 111-47 victory. It was the second-ever meeting between the Tigers and Huskies. The Tigers hung around with the annual national championship contenders in the second and third quarters, scoring 36 points across that 20-minute span while allowing 46. But the Huskies managed to score 33 points in the opening frame and another 32 in the final stanza while holding the Tigers to a combined 11 points in the first and last quarters. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6443">Katie Wagner</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers in both points and rebounds, totaling 11 points and seven rebounds in 28 minutes of action.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6438">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;also reached double figures in scoring, tallying 10 points, two rebounds and two assists. UConn finished the day shooting 57.8 percent from the floor, including an 8-for-12 effort from behind the arc in the opening half. The Tigers hit 26.7 percent from the floor (16-of-60), including six 3-pointers from four different players. Fort Hays State tallied assists on 10 of its 16 made buckets. The Tigers scored 14 second-chance points after grabbing 11 offensive boards, while UConn totaled 18 second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds. Fort Hays State will open the regular season next weekend with a pair of games in St. Joseph, Mo. at the Hillard Women's Basketball Tip-Off Classic hosted by Missouri Western State. The Tigers struggled to get an offensive rhythm on their first two possessions of the game, but they found their stride after that building a 27-0 lead by halftime.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6186">Adrian Soto</a>&nbsp;opened the scoring for the Tigers with a one-yard touchdown plunge in the first quarter, then the Tigers scored three times in the second quarter all on touchdown passes by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6146">Chance Fuller</a>. He found&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6174">Manny Ramsey</a>&nbsp;for a 7-yard score,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6130">Hunter Budke</a>&nbsp;for a 3-yard score, and Budke again for a 14-yard score.

With his second touchdown pass of the game, Fuller took over the all-time lead in passing touchdowns at FHSU with his 61st, going past predecessor Jacob Mezera's mark of 60 set in 2018. Fuller finished with four touchdown passes in the game and now has 63 for his career.

Four Tigers found themselves in the championship match at their respective weights and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6594">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;was able to come out a champion in the Elite 184 bracket. Verhaeghe won his first two matches by decision 6-1 and 4-1 before reaching the semifinals where his opponent was medically unable to compete. After advancing to the finals, Verhaeghe finished the day with a 7-4 decision over Gleason Mappes from Indianapolis. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6582">Broderick Green</a>&nbsp;(125),&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6598">Devon Weber</a>&nbsp;(133), and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6584">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;(197) also reached the finals but fell just short of taking first place. He won his semifinal match by decision 3-2, but was unable to win out as he fell by 8-0 major decision to Derek Blubaugh of Indianapolis.

The Tigers also had two wrestlers win third place on the consolation side of their brackets,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6586">Cody Hicks</a>&nbsp;(157) and Anthony Caldwell (285). After receiving a first round bye, Hicks fell in the quarterfinal by sudden victory 12-11. Despite the loss, Hicks worked his way all the way up the consolation side with wins by fall in 2:39 and decision 4-1 before cruising to the third place match due to a medical forfeit where he pulled out a 6-3 decision over Anthony Michaels from Lindenwood. Caldwell had a similar path to placing as he received a first round bye. He then won by decision 11-4 to advance to the semifinals where he lost by fall in 4:03. Caldwell won the consolation semifinal match by 7-2 decision and then finished off with a major decision 12-2 over Kevin Zange of McKendree. The final placers of the day were&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6600">Gunnar Smith</a>&nbsp;(133), who placed fifth, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6596">Cole Zebley</a>&nbsp;(141) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6603">Cason Lindsey</a>&nbsp;(149) finished sixth. Smith started off strong making it to the championship semifinals with wins by 16-0 technical fall and 4-1 decision, but then fell by 12-8 decision in his semifinal match. Smith would then lose by fall in 52 seconds in the consolation semifinals, but finished fifth by medical forfeit. Zebley received a first round bye and then lost by 5-0 decision in the quarterfinals. He would then claw his way to the consolation semifinals with another bye and then a 9-4 decision. Zebley would then forfeit his last two matches and end in sixth place. Lindsey lost his first round match by 7-1 decision and had to fight all the way through the back side to make it to the consolation semifinals with wins by fall in 4:49, 13-3 major decision, and another fall in 2:38. Lindsey then lost in the consolation semifinals by sudden victory 9-7 and then finished in sixth after losing to Noah Villareal from McKendree in a 6-2 decision. The Tiger wrestling team will be back in action next week as they travel to Mitchell, S.D. for the Dakota Wesleyan Open. The first round begins at 9 a.m.

Smith started off strong making it to the championship semifinals with wins by 16-0 technical fall and 4-1 decision, but then fell by 12-8 decision in his semifinal match. Smith would then lose by fall in 52 seconds in the consolation semifinals, but finished fifth by medical forfeit. Zebley received a first round bye and then lost by 5-0 decision in the quarterfinals. He would then claw his way to the consolation semifinals with another bye and then a 9-4 decision. Zebley would then forfeit his last two matches and end in sixth place. Lindsey lost his first round match by 7-1 decision and had to fight all the way through the back side to make it to the consolation semifinals with wins by fall in 4:49, 13-3 major decision, and another fall in 2:38. Lindsey then lost in the consolation semifinals by sudden victory 9-7 and then finished in sixth after losing to Noah Villareal from McKendree in a 6-2 decision. HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State fell 1-0 to Southern Nazarene on Saturday in a battle for the GAC/MIAA regular season title. The Crimson Storm found their winning goal in the 78th minute on a strike from Daniel Trojman near the top of the box. The GAC/MIAA has now seen three different regular season champions over the last three seasons with FHSU in 2019, Rogers State in the brief 2020-21 spring season, and now Southern Nazarene in 2021. Neither team could find the net early on, but the Crimson Storm scored late with the wind at their backs and the Tigers could not muster much of a counter the final 12 minutes. With the win, Southern Nazarene moved to 12-6 overall (9-3 GAC). FHSU fell to 11-5-2 (8-3-1 GAC) and finished second in the conference regular season standings.

The Tigers were aggressive on offense in the first half, recording eight shots compared to four by the Crimson Storm. They had their scoring chances, but could never put any of the golden opportunities in the net.

With the result, Southern Nazarene will now host the four-team GAC/MIAA Championship Tournament next week in Bethany, Oklahoma on Friday and Sunday (Nov. 12 and 14). Match times will be announced in the coming days. Currently sitting on the good side of the 10-team bubble in the latest NCAA Regional Rankings, the Tigers may need to win the GAC/MIAA Tournament next week to earn a selection to the NCAA Tournament. ⚽ Tiger men come up short against SNU in regular season finale

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State climbed quickly into the Top 25 on the back of three straight wins to start the season, then the Wildcats plummeted just as quickly from the poll after three straight losses to open Big 12 play.

Deuce Vaughn had a career-high 162 yards rushing and three touchdowns, Skylar Thompson shredded Kansas through the air before a cheap shot knocked him out of the game in the fourth quarter, and the Wildcats cruised to a 35-10 victory over the Jayhawks on Saturday that wasn't as close as the final score.

“We're bowl-eligible, we have won three games in a row. It tells you an awful lot about the character and resolve of our guys the way we started off in conference,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said. “There was always continued belief in that locker room, continued belief in our leaders that we could turn it around.”

Thompson was 19 of 24 for 244 yards and a touchdown before he was hit by the Jayhawks' Gavin Potter out of bounds along the Kansas State sideline. Thompson remained on the ground for several minutes before finally getting up.

The personal foul put the ball just outside the goal line, and Vaughn plowed in for his final rushing TD of the day.

“Some of it's bang-bang stuff,” Klieman said, “but (Thompson) is fine. He's ready to come back next week and get after it.”

Vaughn also caught five passes for 60 yards, and Malik Knowles had 94 yards receiving and a touchdown, as the Wildcats (6-3, 3-3 Big 12) beat their rival for the eighth consecutive time at Memorial Stadium and 13th straight overall.

Devin Neal had 62 yards rushing for the Jayhawks (1-8, 0-6), who were down to third-string quarterback Jalon Daniels by the third quarter. Jason Bean was banged up early but was ineffective anyway, and backup Miles Kendrick was carted off after getting hurt on his second play of the game.

Daniels finished 13 of 19 for 105 yards and a score.

“Jason was shaken up, tried to go back. Miles was hurt. I think those injuries and having them carted off the field took a little bit of wind out of us,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “I don't want to take away anything from Coach Klieman and his program, I think we just lost a little intensity.”

The Jayhawks trailed 21-3 by halftime and it could have been much worse.

On offense, they watched running back Torry Locklin get carted off the field before Bean and Kendrick got hurt, and they saw normally sure-footed Jacob Borcila miss one of his two field-goal attempts.

On defense, the Jayhawks allowed the Wildcats to gain a staggering 10.7 yards with every snap.

Kansas State's opening touchdown drive was highlighted by Vaughn's 30-yard run, which set up his own 1-yard plunge a few minutes later. The next drive took all of two plays and ended when Thompson hit Knowles with a 68-yard strike. And the Wildcats' third first-half TD came after two big passes to Vaughn set up Ben Sinnott's short scoring run.

The momentum sure didn't change over halftime.

And when the Jayhawks finally got on the board with Daniels' TD pass to Kwamie Lassiter II, the Wildcats answered with a 75-yard touchdown march. It ended two plays after Thompson was knocked into the sideline with Vaughn's TD run.

“It's tough. Two weeks in a row something like that happened, where I'm trying to get out of bounds and trying to protect myself," Thompson said. “It just knocked the wind out of me. I'm fine. It's just unfortunate."

Kansas State has won three straight on the heels of a three-game losing streak. Thompson's return from an injury sustained against Southern Illinois has been a big reason why. He threw for 300 yards against Texas Tech and was solid in last week's win over TCU. Vaughn is a legitimate star, but he's much less potent without Thompson directing the show.
