OKLAHOMA CITY - The Hays Hammer 18u baseball team put up a good fight but came up on the short end of a 3-0 decision to the Offspeed 2023 out of Texas in their final pool play game at the Perfect Game 17/18U Oklahoma Champhionship.
The Hammer (21-10) finished 1-2 in pool play and will play for fifth place vs. MVP 17u out of Norman, Okla. Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Union City High School.
Saturday night's game was scoreless through the first three innings. Offspeed scored what proved to be the winning run in the fourth after their leadoff batter was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a single then scored on a wild pitch.
They added two more runs in the fifth following a two-out error and single.
Starting pitcher Garrett Wellbrock (5-3) allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks over six innings.
Two Offspeed pitchers held the Hammer to three hits and combined to strike out 11.
