KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For a third time shis fall, former Hays High standout Tradgon McCrae has been named the MIAA Golfer of the Week.

The Lions
senior took home the individual title with a three round three-under par 210,
helping MSSU to a runner up finish at the Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by
Missouri Western at St. Joseph Country Club earlier this week. 

This is his
second individual championship this season, having also won at Northeastern
State earlier in the season. McCrae hit seven birdies in the final 18 holes and
had 16 birdies and an eagle over the course of 54 holes.

🏐 FHSU sets school block record in loss to No. 10 Ichabods

<a href="https://newsroom.ap.org/home/search/?query=byline:%22ERIC%20OLSON%22&amp;mediaType=text&amp;st=keyword&amp;sortOrder=newest"></a>Adrian Martinez had done just about everything in his first four years of college football except play on a winning team.

Those wins are finally coming for him at Kansas State.

The 17th-ranked Wildcats (5-1, 3-0) sit atop the Big 12 standings in large part because of their dual-threat quarterback. He rushed for a combined 319 yards and acounted for nine touchdowns in breakout performances against Oklahoma and Texas Tech before he led the Wildcats to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-kansas-state-wildcats-ames-bbb21e172d8bfc58336e596ddb12bb27">grind-it-out victory at Iowa State</a>&nbsp;last week.

Martinez has won three straight games for the first time after never winning more than two in a row at Nebraska. He was picked as the Big 12's top first-year transfer at midseason in a vote of Associated Press writers covering the conference.

Martinez set more than a dozen records in his time at Nebraska, but the Cornhuskers were just 15-29 while he often played hurt.

His 48 turnovers (30 interceptions, 18 fumbles) were most in the Bowl Subdivision from 2018-21, according to Sportradar. So far at K-State he has not thrown an interception or lost a fumble.

Martinez averages 241 yards of total offense per game to rank sixth in the Big 12, and he's fourth in rushing at 91 yards per game.

A key point of the early season was a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-kansas-state-wildcats-pratt-eb87a1cce163aa63a8198b158c6e5bda">17-10 home loss to Tulane</a>&nbsp;on Sept. 17. Martinez acknowledged he had played tentatively, and coach Chris Klieman and offensive coordinator Collin Klein sat him down and told him to forget about the possibility of making mistakes and let his natural ability take over.

“”That really speaks to the culture of this team and program, the leadership of coach Klieman and some of the older guys on this squad," Martinez said. “We were determined not to let it ruin our season. All our goals are still on the horizon. The Big 12, that's all it's about.”

QB Max Duggan, TCU (5-0, 2-0). He started 29 games for the Horned Frogs pre-Sonny Dykes and then lost the job to Chandler Morris in preseason practices. Morris sprained a knee in the opener against Colorado and hasn't been seen since. Duggan, meanwhile, has thrown for 261 yards per game with 14 touchdowns against one interception. He's second to Ohio State's C.J. Stroud in passer rating (194.36) and yards per attempt (10.3).

DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Kansas State. One of the most disruptive forces in the Big 12, he's building on a 2021 season that saw him earn all-conference first-team honors. He's tied for second nationally with 6.5 sacks. His two forced fumbles give him eight in 24 games, with his 0.33 career average best among active FBS players.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-wisconsin-nebraska-madison-c74e76786d3ed99cfbb7a13fffcebceb">Kansas second-year coach Lance Leipold</a>&nbsp;is known as a program builder, and his work with the No. 19 Jayhawks (5-1, 2-1) could be his best yet. The Jayhawks are ranked this season for the first time since 2009 and are one win from bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008. Leipold has done it with a big-play offense that has 19 plays of at least 30 yards and a defense fortified by a couple of key transfers.

Kansas was the easy choice, and last week's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-lawrence-texas-christian-horned-frogs-max-duggan-b972d90f7fa3216ca44e49d3bcb0c59e">narrow home loss to TCU</a>&nbsp;didn't do much to diminish the magnitude of what's happening in Lawrence. This is a program that hasn't won a conference championship in football since 1968, and it lost 91 of 97 Big 12 games under five coaches before Leipold took over last year. The Jayhawks still have a long list of accomplishments they would like to check off. The next opportunity comes Saturday when they go for their first win at Oklahoma since 1996.

Kansas QB Jalon Daniels was among the nation's most efficient passers until he injured a shoulder in the first half against TCU. He's doubtful for the game at OU. Daniels has thrown for 11 touchdowns and run for five, has been intercepted just once, and averages 234.5 yards of total offense per game. His six runs of at least 20 yards are second-most in the Big 12 and he's had eight passes go for at least 30.

Oklahoma (3-3) looked every bit the top-10 team it was when it won 49-14 at Nebraska. Now&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-oklahoma-texas-longhorns-southern-california-trojans-dbe51968fbac4c2ec54185076e737ec8">first-year coach Brent Venable's Sooners</a>&nbsp;are 0-3 in Big 12 play for the first time since 1998 and coming off a 49-0 beatdown by Texas that was their most lopsided loss in the Red River Rivalry. The Sooners' offense has gone dormant in the absence of QB Dillon Gabriel, who's been out with a concussion since Oct. 1.

West Virginia coach Neal Brown is 2-3 in his fourth season and finding four more wins to get to .500 in the regular season won't be easy. One of the wins was against FCS Towson. Brown was one of the hot coaches after three straight double-digit-win seasons at Troy, but he's 19-21 at West Virginia. The Mountaineers are approaching four straight years without an appearance in the AP poll, which would be the program's longest stretch since 1959-68.

Gabriel was one of the Big 12's top transfers when he moved from Central Florida to Oklahoma and was sharp as he led the Sooners to a 3-0 start. 🏈 AP Big 12 midseason honoree Martinez enjoys winning feeling

The Hays Middle School Falcons concluded their volleyball season with the MSWAC tournament in Dodge City Saturday. The 7th graders took the league championship in three sets over Great Bend.

The Falcons trailed 12-10 in the third set before rallying to win 15-12 over Great Bend. They finished their season at 27-2.

The 8th graders finished as league runner up to Great Bend for a second consecutive season. The Falcons fell 25-22 in both sets of the championship match. They finished their season at 23-6.

Hays Middle School volleyball is coached by Donna Ward, Dave Ward, Jaycee Dale and Jaysa Wichers.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State men's soccer team dropped one spot in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll posted on Tuesday (Oct. 11), now at No. 16. The Tigers have been among the Top 25 in five of the six regular season polls as well as the preseason poll.

The Tigers fell to Newman 1-0 in their only match last week. FHSU is 7-3-3 overall this season, but has wins over No. 3 ranked CSU-Pueblo and No. 25 Southern Nazarene and a win over Northeastern State when it was No. 16 in the nation. They have played four matches this season against teams currently in the Top 25.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas will likely be without star quarterback Jalon Daniels, who hurt his right shoulder in last week's loss to TCU, leaving backup Jason Bean to start when the No. 19 Jayhawks visit struggling Oklahoma on Saturday.

Daniels was hurt just before halftime of the 38-31 loss when he was scrambling toward the sideline and was sacked by the Horned Frogs' Jamoi Hodge. He was evaluated in the medical tent before heading to the locker room ahead of the rest of the team for more tests. When he returned to the sideline in the second half, Daniels was dressed in sweats.

“Jalon did not practice today and would probably be put in the doubtful area,” Jayhawks coach Lance Leipold said Tuesday. “Again, looking at it day to day, but hasn't done anything yet and that's probably the extent I will comment at this time.”

Daniels had been the catalyst behind the Jayhawks' 5-0 start to the season, earning early Heisman Trophy consideration by throwing for 1,072 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception while running for 335 yards and five more scores.

He was 5 of 10 for 89 yards and had run seven times for 6 yards before leaving the game against the Horned Frogs.

Bean, who started nine games last season before getting hurt, nearly rallied the Jayhawks to the win.

The senior opened with a tying touchdown pass to Mason Fairchild, then connected with Luke Grimm and Quentin Skinner on TD tosses later in the third quarter. Bean threw a fourth touchdown pass to Skinner with 4:29 left, knotting it 31-all, but TCU's Max Duggan answered with a go-ahead touchdown pass to Quentin Johnston with 1:36 to go.

Bean had the Jayhawks on the move one last time, but a fourth-down pass from the TCU 34 fell incomplete with 37 seconds left. Wide receiver Lawrence Arnold appeared to be held on the play but no flag was thrown. And all the Horned Frogs had to do was snap the ball, take a knee and let the clock run out to remain unbeaten.

“No matter who’s in,” Bean said, “we have the ability to go down and score the ball.”

Bean finished 16 of 24 for 262 yards, matched a career best with the four TD throws and added 34 yards rushing. But he also threw an inexplicable interception deep in Kansas territory, and TCU reached the end zone five plays later.

Still, it was an impressive performance on short notice, and now Bean will have first-team reps all week in practice to get ready for the Sooners, who are coming off an embarrassing 49-0 loss to Texas in the Red River Showdown.

“It’s really a credit to him. We all recognize that,” Leipold said of the dual-threat quarterback from Mansfield, Texas. “I stood here in August and talked about (Bean) playing well, and it wasn’t just to appease him.”

One thing the Jayhawks have going in their favor is that the styles of Bean and Daniels are similar. Both are speedy quarterbacks capable of running the option, scrambling and making plays in space, and that means Leipold and Kansas offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki won't have to make wholesale changes to the game plan.

“You're always going to tweak to somebody's strengths, but you know, the call sheet is the call sheet and we're going to continue to do what we can to be as multiple as possible,” Leipold said. “If he ends up being there for a while, I'm sure there are things he's more comfortable with than other plays or something that Jalon runs, but again, that hasn't been a heavy dose of conversation yet.”

The top four slots of the Coaches Poll are filled by teams that competed in the NCAA Central Regional last year. After Missouri Southern and Fort Hays State, Nebraska-Kearney was picked third and Missouri Western fourth. All four teams received multiple first place votes, MSSU with six, FHSU with three, UNK with two, and MWSU with three. Central Missouri jumped into the top four mix of the Media Poll, slotted third behind MSSU and FHSU. The trio of schools each received multiple first-place votes, MSSU with 13, FHSU with four, and UCM with three. Central Missouri was the champion of the Central Region two years ago (2020-21), but came up short of making the regional last year. Northwest Missouri State is coming off a third-straight national title, finishing the year with 11 straight wins. Both NWMSU and UCO received all of the first-place votes in each poll. The top five teams are the same in each poll, with Fort Hays State, Washburn, and Emporia State in order behind NWMSU and UCO. The top five of the polls reflect the regular season standings of 2021-22. The Tigers are coming off a 23-6 record in 2021-22. If you take away losses against Northwest Missouri State and Central Oklahoma, the Tigers were 23-1. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs headed off to the locker room facing a big hole against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night, everything from the big plays to the officiating calls going the way of their longtime AFC West rivals.

One call in particular lit a fire under them.

It was a dubious penalty on Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones for roughing Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, and nobody in the Kansas City locker room could believe it. But rather than stew over it, or lament their 10-point deficit, Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs used it as motivation to storm from behind for the 30-29 victory.

“There was anger just about how we had played up to that point,” said Mahomes, who threw four touchdown passes to tight end Travis Kelce. “We needed everybody to go out there and take the fight to them.”

The Raiders still had a chance when Davante Adams, who earlier had hauled in a 58-yard touchdown catch, added a 48-yarder with 4:29 to go. It came after Kelce's final touchdown catch, when Kansas City failed on a 2-point try that left the score 30-23. But rather than kick a tying extra point, Raiders coach Josh McDaniels also went for 2.

Josh Jacobs, who had shredded the Chiefs defense all night, was stuffed at the goal line.

The Raiders got the ball back one last time with 2:29 left, and a long third-down pass to Adams down the Kansas City sideline appeared to get them in field-goal range. But the play was reviewed and Adams failed to get both feet in bounds, and Carr threw incomplete on fourth-and-1 with 47 seconds left before the Chiefs ran out the clock.

“We didn't fall apart on each other,” Chiefs safety Justin Reid said. “We battled through adversity.”

Carr finished with 241 yards passing, and Jacobs ran for 133 yards and a score, as the Raiders lost to the Chiefs (4-1) for the fourth straight time. Daniel Carlson was 3 for 3 on field goals, extending his streak to 38 in a row.

What he wouldn't have given for a chance at No. 39.

“We had a chance,” Daniels said. “We just didn't make one or two plays there at the end to finish it.”

The game of twists and turns began with the Raiders failing to score on their opening drive for the first time all season.

Facing fourth-and-inches in their own territory, McDaniels sent his offense back on the field. But rather than run Jacobs up the middle, or sneak with Carr, he aired it out to Adams, who ran past Rashad Fenton for the 58-yard TD catch.

Adams and the Raiders continued to pick on Fenton later in the half, when a pass interference moved Las Vegas deep into Chiefs territory. Adams drew another penalty on Jaylen Watson in the end zone, setting up Jacobs' short TD plunge.

It was 17-0 when Kelce finally reached the end zone for the Chiefs, but it appeared as if the momentum had turned when Jones stripped Carr from behind and landed him. But despite the ball clearly coming out, and the Pro Bowl defensive tackle coming away with it, referee Carl Cheffers threw a penalty flag and called Jones for roughing the passer.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid stormed off the sideline to argue. And after the teams traded field goals in the final minutes, leaving the Raiders ahead 20-10, Reid cornered Cheffers and lit into him again as the teams headed to the locker room.

“I got it off my chest,” Reid said. “I said what I needed to say.”

The questionable penalty came one day after another questionable roughing call by referee Jerome Boger on Atlanta's Grady Jarrett against Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady sealed the Buccaneers' win over the Falcons.

Cheffers told a pool reporter that Carr “gets full protection of all aspects of what we give the quarterback in a passing posture. So when he was tackled, my ruling was the defender landed on him with full body weight.”

Mahomes said: “It wasn't the greatest call in the world. You have to find a way to bounce back and we did.”

the 3-2-1A state golf tournament after a fourth place finish at the Larned
Regional Monday at the Larned Country Club.

The Monarchs combined for a 440 team total. Colby won the
team title with a 377.

Madelyn Rozean lead TMP with a tie for seventh-place individual
finish. She finished with a 27-over 99.

Ashley Hipp was 14th (+34), Mykayla Romme T25th
(+43), Jenna Brull 29th (+48) and Ave Schumacher 56th
(+71).

Colby’s Anna Starbuck won the individual title with a
five-over 77. 

Plainville’s Emily Stamper also qualified for the state tournament
as an individual with a third place finish after shooting a 23-over 95.

The 3-2-1A state tournament is Oct. 17 and 18 at

Katie Dinkel led the Indians with a fourth place finish. She
fired a five-over 75. 

Abigail Norris finished fifth with an eight-over 78. Evyn
Cox was sixth with a 12-over 82.

Jaycee Oakley tied for 14th (+19), Lilly Garrison was 16th
(+20) and Clair Humphrey was&nbsp; 17th (+21).

The Tigers defeated Emporia State at home, then went on the road to knock off Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State. Eshbaugh averaged 4.00 kills per set with a .277 attack percentage. She led FHSU in kills in all three contests, totaling 11 in a three-set win over Emporia State and 12 in another three-set win over Missouri Southern before going off for a career-high 21 kills in a five-set win at Pittsburg State. It was the most kills in a single match by a Tiger since 2019. She totaled 44 kills on 101 attempts for the week, while adding five blocks, four digs and two assists. MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Thanks to a career-high 11 tackles in Kansas State's 10-9 victory at Iowa State, senior safety&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8594">Josh Hayes</a>&nbsp;has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hayes was the leading tackler for a stifling defense that allowed its fewest points since last year's season opener against Stanford (7), the fewest in a Big 12 game since the 2018 Texas Tech contest (6) and the fewest in a Big 12 road contest since the 2016 TCU game (6). K-State surrendered just 276 total yards to the Cyclones, including just 78 rushing yards. It was the fewest rushing yards allowed since West Virginia gained 74 yards last season and the fewest in a Big 12 road game since Baylor had 71 yards in 2020. A product of Lakeland, Florida, Hayes also had a five-yard tackle for loss and a pass breakup at Iowa State. Hayes, who came to K-State as a transfer from Virginia, ranks third on the team in both tackles (33) and tackles for loss (4.5). A cornerback through his entire collegiate career, he moved to free safety this year and is closing in on posting his career-best season for tackles (59 in 2019), while he already has more tackles for loss than the previous four years of his career combined (3.5). Hayes' accolade marks the third-straight week a Wildcat has been honored by the conference and the sixth time this season. Brasser was tied for the tournament lead after the first round and then separated from the rest of the field on day two for a three-stroke win. The Tigers as a team finished sixth among the 11 teams competing in the tournament. It was Brasser's second individual tournament title in her collegiate career after winning the Holiday Inn Express Spring Regional Preview in St. Joseph, Mo. last spring. Brasser found herself in the same position as she was two weeks ago through the first round of a tournament, holding the lead. Brasser and Allison Comer of Nebraska-Kearney both shot even par (72) in the opening round, both two shots clear of Paige Hoffman from Northwest Missouri State. This time Brasser pulled away from the field by shooting 1-over on her first nine of day two while the rest of the field fell further back. Comer of UNK struggled through the first nine on day two at 6-over par, while Hoffman was three over through her first nine and fell four strokes behind Brasser. A handful of Augustana golfers lurked four to five shots behind Brasser at the turn, but she had plenty of cushion to hold them off for a three-stroke win at 4-over par overall on the par-72 layout. Brasser finished with a 148 total for the tournament. Augustana went on to claim the team title with four golfers within the top 10. Lauren Tims was the closest to Brasser of that group with a second-place finish at 7-over par overall. Lanie Veenendall (+8), Masy Mock (+9), and Molly Stevens (+9) were all among that cluster of Vikings. Comer of UNK tied Veenendall for third individually, also at 8-over par. Brasser made her presence known early by carding the tournament's only eagle on her second hole of play, a 465-yard par 5. That had her at 2-under right out of the gates and she went on to finish her first nine of the tournament 1-under par. Three bogeys followed by a mixture of four pars and two birdies had Brasser even par through 18 holes. She navigated the course at even par through her first 11 holes on day two with a pair of birdies, seven pars, and two bogeys. Her sizable lead came in handy during the final seven holes, eventually finishing at 4-over par. Brasser topped the field in scoring on par 5s at 4-under par. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6949">Shauna Lee</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6953">Aliyah North</a>&nbsp;tied for 33rd&nbsp;in the individual standings. The Hillcats struck first as a set piece play allowed Ashton Shepperson to cross the ball into the box where Andrea Egerer scored on a well-placed header in the ninth minute. FHSU answered in the 30th&nbsp;minute with a header as well on a corner kick from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6686">Sullivan Kelly</a>&nbsp;that found&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6687">Reilly Madden</a>&nbsp;tight to the back post. It was the first career goal of the defensive specialist's career at FHSU. The Tigers went on to settle for their third straight draw, but still remain unbeaten on the season.

The Tigers outshot the Hillcats 10-8 in the match and had one more shot on goal, 4-3.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6693">Isabel Robben</a>&nbsp;collected two saves, while Tiffany Brittan picked up three for the Hillcats. ⚽ Tiger women play to draw with Rogers State

WAKEENEY – Victoria’s Aurora Nowlin along with Trego’s Kya O’Banion
and Annabelle Malsom have qualified for the 3-2-1A state tennis tournament. Nowlin
finished sixth in singles and O’Banion and Malsom were sixth in doubles at the
Trego regional over the weekend.

Nowlin (13-8) received a first round bye and defeated LeAnne
Beikmann of Norton 6-1, 6-2 in her first match. After losing to Phillipsburg’s
Makenna Russom in her second match she came back to beat Norton Taylor Mapes
6-1, 6-2 before losing to Felis De La Cruz of Ellsworth 6-1, 6-2 in the fifth
place match.

Central Plains Kyla Metro went 4-0 to win the singles regional
title.

O’Banion and Malsom also had a first-round bye and defeated
Rayne Bray and Lauren Higgins of Hoisington 6-0, 6-2 before losing to Gracie Riner
and Laevie Riner of Osborne 6-0, 6-1. They came back to beat Jaden Belles and
Gabby Poels of Phillipsburg 6-0, 6-3 before losing to Central Plains Ryann
Metro and Ashlyn Armstrong in the fifth place match.

Osborne’s Gracie Riner and Leavie Riner won the won the doubles
title. 

The 3-2-1 State Tennis Tournament begins Friday, October 14
at 6the Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.

A former Hays High volleyball standout has reached a milestone at Barton CC Tasiah Nunnery became the fifth Cougar in program history to eclipse 1,000 digs.

The sophomore recorded 12 digs in a match with Dodge City CC last week to bring her career total to 1,006.

Nunnery averages 3.51 digs per set and her 707 kills has moved her into 14th on the Cougars all-time list. Her 96 service aces rank 16th best all-time and is just 13 shy or the top-10 in school history.
