All five girls wrestlers from Hays are still in contention
after the first day of competition Wednesday at their respective state wrestling
tournaments.

Hays High’s Sarah Zimmerman pinned her way to the
championship match Wednesday at 109 pounds. 

Zimmerman (32-4) opened the tournament with a first-period
fall, in just 54 seconds, over Luisa Duewel of Shawnee Mission Northwest. In
her championship quarterfinals match Zimmerman record a first-period fall, in
just less than two minutes, in a win over Catherin Duong of Olathe North. It
took Zimmerman just one minute and 15 seconds to record her third pin, this time
over Ashley Alonso of Dodge City in the championship semifinals.

Zimmerman will face Larissa Garcia (41-4) of Wichita North in
the championship match Thursday evening. 

The three other Hays High wrestlers, Addison Otte, Katie
Gutierrez and Lexi Burton lost a match on day one but are still in contention. 

At 120 pounds Addison Otte recorded a second-period fall
over Katina Keosybounheuang but then lost by fall in championship quarter
finals to Jenna Knight from Bonner Springs. Otte (18-15) will face Ella Weber of
Shawnee Mission West in the consolation wrestle backs Thursday morning.

Both Katie Gutierrez at 132 pounds and Lexie Burton at 143
pounds stumbled out of the gate with first-round losses but bounced back with wins
in the consolation first round to avoid elimination.

Gutierrez (18-13) at 132 pounds lost by a third-period fall
against Kamahni Jackson from Sumner Academy. She followed that with a second-period
fall against Aubrianna Barnes of Olathe North. She will face Brynn Lowe from
Blue Valley Southwest in the consolation wrestle backs Thursday morning.

Burton at 143 pounds lost a 2-1 decision in her first match
of the day against Sara Soureshjani from Shawnee Mission South. Burton (21-15)
then defeated Claire Vanderweide of Basehor-Linwood. She will face McKenna
Haltom of Shawnee Heights in the consolation wrestle backs Thursday morning.

TMP’s Claudine Stein went 1-1 in her first state wrestling
tournament Thursday. 

Stein (19-16) opened with a second-period fall victory over
Linsay Witt of Wellsville. The followed that with a loss by first-period fall
against Lyndsey Escareno of Eureka. Stein will face Jailyn Rodriguez in the
consolation wrestle backs Thursday morning.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team is again ranked first in the second release of the 2022 NCAA Division II Central Region rankings, distributed on Wednesday (Feb. 23) by the NCAA office. This week's rankings look fairly similar to the first release, with the same 10 programs recognized again this time around. The top four teams all stayed in the same place, with the bottom six moving around slightly. Harding fell from fifth to 10th after two losses, while Missouri Southern, Minnesota State-Mankato and Nebraska-Kearney all moved up two spots to fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Missouri Western, FHSU's opponent Wednesday evening, dipped two spots to eighth after taking a loss while Central Missouri jumped from 10th to ninth. The Tigers are one of five MIAA programs listed amongst the top 10 teams in the region at this point of the season. Fort Hays State and St. Cloud State are tied for the fewest losses in the region with three, but the Tigers defeated SCSU earlier this season in Hays. The Northern Sun has three teams ranked in the top six, while the Great American Conference has two teams in the rankings. Fort Hays State has the top performance indicator in the region and the second-best in-region RPI behind SWOSU. The Tigers and the rest of the MIAA programs, along with the teams from the Great American Conference, still have two more games to go in the regular season. The Northern Sun, on the other hand, will open its conference tournament tonight before crowning a champion next Tuesday (March 1). This year's NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship will be back to a full field of 64 teams made up of eight eight-team regionals. The top seed in each region will have the opportunity to host the first three rounds of the tournament (March 11-14) before the eight regional champions meet up in Birmingham, Ala. for the Elite Eight (March 21-25). In the Central Region, the conference tournament champions from the MIAA, NSIC and GAC receive an automatic bid with the rest of the field filled with the top five remaining teams at-large. 🏀 Tiger women remain atop Central Region rankings

INDIANAPOLIS – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball is ranked No. 7 in the second set of Central Region Rankings, released by the NCAA on February 23. FHSU moved down one spot in the rankings this week, trading spots with Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Tigers remain in good position for a potential berth to the NCAA Tournament with one week remaining in the regular season. Fort Hays State is among seven teams with five or less losses in the Central Region. Six of those seven are in the latest NABC Top 25 national rankings, including FHSU, which shows the strength of the Central Region on a national level. No other region can boast having that many teams with five or less losses among their region rankings. The Tigers were 18-4 against NCAA Division II competition as of Sunday (21-4 record overall). FHSU went 3-0 since the last time the regional committee convened, defeating Lincoln twice and Central Missouri. The Tigers continue to hold the sixth-best performance indicator in the Central Region and sixth-best region RPI. They also carry a better Division II in-region, overall record, and strength of schedule than Southeastern Oklahoma. However, there is still another set of rankings to come out next week before the Tigers start MIAA Tournament play and the formulas can still shift further as more games are played this week. The top three schools from the NSIC continue to rank 1-2-3 in the second edition of the rankings. Augustana remains No. 1, Upper Iowa No. 2, and Minnesota Duluth No. 3. Central Oklahoma swapped spots with Northwest Missouri State this week in the No. 4 and 5 positions. UCO defeated NWMSU in the only head-to-head regular season matchup between the teams this season. The Tigers (23-3, 16-3 MIAA) are currently tied for first in the league standings with Missouri Southern. An updated list of regional rankings will be announced on Wednesday, but the Tigers were listed first in the initial release last week. The Tigers can finish no lower than third in the final regular season standings, while one win during the final week will lock in a top-two spot and thus a Thursday quarterfinal in the MIAA Championships (March 3). The Tigers and Griffons (20-6, 14-6 MIAA) met last month in St. Joseph, with Fort Hays State pulling away in the second half for a 74-61 win over the then-22nd-ranked Griffons (1/15/22). Randall totaled 15 points in the win, giving the senior 67 points over her last three games against MWSU (15, 29, 23). Together with the men's team, now ranked 18th, Fort Hays State is one of just three DII schools with both teams ranked in the latest edition of coaches polls (Lubbock Christian, Cal State San Marcos). FHSU is the only MIAA school with 20+ wins by both teams this season and the only school with both teams still alive for a regular season conference title. The Tiger hoops teams have a combined 44 wins this season, four more than the next-closest MIAA program (Northwest Missouri State). With her first bucket on Wednesday, Randall (1,320 points) will move past Chris Biser (1986-90, 1,321 points) for 10th on the all-time list at Fort Hays State. Hobbs (397 assists at FHSU) needs three assists to become the third Tiger to eclipse 400 assists and needs 16 points to become the 23rd player in program history to reach 1,000 points as a Tiger. The Tigers are 31-23 all-time against the Griffons, including wins in each of the last three meetings and in six of the last seven contests. PLAINVILLE – Both the TMP-Marian boys and girls basketball teams wrapped
up Mid-Continent League titles Tuesday night with a pair of big wins over the
Plainville Cardinals.

Girls: TMP 100, Plainville 20 The TMP Lady Monarchs made a season-high 13 3-pointer field
goals and five players scored in double-figures as they reached the century mark
in a 100-20 win over Plainville.

TMP (17-3, 10-1 MCL) seniors Emilee Lane and Sophia
Balthazor scored 12 first quarter points each as the Monarchs outscored the
Cardinals (0-20, 0-11 MCL) 37-2 in the first quarter.

Balthazor scored 12 more of her game-high 29 points in the
second quarter as the Monarchs pulled away for a 66-11 halftime lead.

The Monarchs outscored Plainville 34-9 in the second half on
their way to a 100-20 victory.

Sophia Balthazor led all scorers with a career-high 29
points. Emilee Lane finished with 19 points and eight rebounds. Jaci VonLintel
added 16 points and Brooke Koenigsman added a career-high 12 points.

With the win the Monarchs clinched a share of the MCL regular
season title with Smith Center and Phillipsburg. All three teams finished with
a 10-1 record.

This season marks the fourth time since TMP joined the MCL,
that they won both the MCL tournament and regular season title. It’s the first
time since 2018.

Boys: TMP 59, Plainville 39 The TMP boys opened the game on a 17-5 run and Dylan Werth
scored 24 points to lead the Monarchs to a 59-39 win Tuesday in Plainville. The
win secures the MCL regular season title for the Monarchs.

TMP (16-4, 10-0 MCL) got out to a quick start, scoring the
games first nine points. Kade Harris scored eight first quarter points helping the
Monarchs build a 12-point first quarter lead at 19-7. TMP led by 10 after one
quarter at 21-11.

Leading 27-16 early in the second quarter Plainville (8-13,
2-8 MCL) cut the lead to four at 27-23.

After a TMP timeout, Dylan Werth scored a layup and helped TMP
close the first half on a 6-2 run to put the Monarchs up 33-25 at halftime.

TMP used a 12-2 run to start the second half and rebuild a
double-digit lead in the third quarter. TMP led 47-35 through three quarters.

The Monarchs then outscored Plainville 12-4 in the fourth
quarter on their way to a 59-39 win.

Dylan Werth and Plainville’s Anders Dewey each scored 24
points.

Gavin Unrein scored 14 points and Kade Harris added 13
points for the Monarchs.

Werth and Jace Wentling each pulled down a game-high nine
rebounds.

With the win TMP claimed their second MCL title in three
years and their fifth overall. Its also the fourth time that TMP has won both
the MCL tournament and the regular season title.

🏀TMP girls secure share of MCL title; boys win it outright with wins at Plainville

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Ochai Agbaji scored 23 points and passed Wilt Chamberlain on Kansas’ career scoring list, leading the No. 5 Jayhawks to a 102-83 win over Kansas State on Tuesday night.

Agbaji, a 6-foot-5 senior guard, now has 1,444 points in 110 games, 26th on Kansas’ all-time list. He passed Chamberlain with his 13th point of the first half. Chamberlain had 1,433 points in 48 games.

Christian Braun scored 20 points, Jalen Wilson added 17 and Mitch Lightfoot 13 for Kansas (23-4, 12-2 Big 12), which posted its 16th straight win over K-State at home.

Kansas is 203-94 all-time against Kansas State. The 203 victories are the most by any school over any opponent in NCAA Division I history. Oregon State’s 193 wins over Oregon ranks second.

Markquis Nowell scored 20 points, Nijel Pack, Selton Miguel and Mike McGuirl each had 13, and Mark Smith added 11 for Kansas State (14-13, 6-9), which finished a point shy of its season-high.

Kansas maintained its 1½-game lead in the Big 12 Conference over Baylor and Texas Tech. The Jayhawks will face Baylor on Saturday in Waco, Texas.

Kansas, which had to overcome a 17-point deficit in the second half of their victory in Manhattan in January, didn’t have to mount any comeback Tuesday. The Jayhawks scored the first bucket of the second half and their lead never dipped into single digits.

The Jayhawks’ 102 points matched a season-high. They shot 64.1% (41 for 64) from the field.

K-State stayed close early with 3-point shooting, connecting on 3 of 7 early on, including two straight by McGuirl. But Kansas used a quick 6-0 run to take an 18-13 lead.

Kansas gradually pulled away, taking a 10-point lead on a tip by Wilson with 9:02 left in the first half. The Jayhawks’ biggest lead in the first half was 16 points at 46-30, and they led 53-43 at halftime.

HAYS - Hays High wrapped up a four game homestand and celebrated Senior Night on Tuesday by hosting Dodge City.

Both the girls teams came in ranked 9th in their respective classes and both teams 3rd.&nbsp;

Girls #9-6A Dodge City 41 - #9-5A Hays 40

Hays held Dodge City without a first quarter field goal but could only build a 7-1 lead after the first eight minutes. Jersey Johnson got the Indians to a 3-0 lead on her first shot of the game.&nbsp;

Hays held a six point lead at 13-7 in the second quarter and an 18-13 advantage with two minutes before halftime. The Red Demons rattled off the final seven points of the half and scored with five second remaining to claim a 20-18 lead at halftime.

The Red Demons led the entire third quarter and built their advantage to 34-26 with five minutes remaining in the game. Hays had their offense comeback to live and went on a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 38-36 lead with 1:10 left.

Dodge City reclaimed the lead at 39-38 just fifteen seconds later. The teams traded turnovers and missed shots over the next five possessions before Molly Martin knocked down two free throws for a 40-39 advantage with 7.8 seconds left.&nbsp;

Dodge City went the length of the court and had the ball knocked out of bounds with just two second remaining and neither team having a timeout left. The Red Demons got the ball in and Camree Johnson provided the last of her game high 15 points to lift Dodge City to a 41-40 victory.

Hays seniors Aleyia Ruder and Jersey Johnson each scored nine to lead the Indians who shot a season high 53%.

Dodge City made five of their first six shots and pulled out to a 12-5 lead in the first quarter and led 12-7 heading into the second. The Red Demons grabbed another multi-possession lead at 16-11 with 5:21 left in the the first half. Hays controlled the remainder of the time. 

Hays made seven of their next eight shots and their only free throw of the quarter for a 16-0 run that covered 5:00. That run put Hays up 27-16 at halftime.

The Indians continued the run through the first minute of the third quarter and a 32-16 lead. Dodge City used the next seven minutes of the game clawing out of that hole. The Red Demons put on a 20-12 run that closed the Indian lead down to 44-36 at the end of the third quarter.

Dodge City drew within five at 44-39 before the Indians put the game away. Carson Kieffer scored seven straight points for the Indians which ignited a game ending 15-7 run for a 59-43 win.

Jace Linenberger led all scoring with 26 points and tied a career high with 16 rebounds. Linenberger moved to 900 career points and tied Roger Casey (1980) for 6th all-time. He passes Sean Finn (2000) and Wes Simoneau (1997). He also becomes the sixth player in school history with 900 career points and 400 rebounds, joining Bill Giles (1977), Roger Casey (1980), Justin Johnson (1990), Matt Stramel (2006), and Brady Werth (2015).

Carson Kieffer scored 15 points. He also became the career assists record holder by passing Marcus Watts' record of 368.&nbsp;

Hays also claimed their third consecutive Western Athletic Conference title. It is the first time the Indians have done so since the formation of the league in 1984.

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team rose in both of this week's national polls after a pair of road wins over the weekend. The Tigers will head into the final week of the regular season ranked sixth in the WBCA DII Coaches Poll and eighth in the D2SIDA Media Poll, both released Tuesday. This is the second time that the Tigers (23-3, 17-3 MIAA) have been slotted sixth in the coaches poll. FHSU sat in sixth earlier this month (Feb. 1) before going on the road to grab wins over Newman and Central Oklahoma. The Tigers are 10-2 all-time when ranked sixth in the coaches poll, including a 2-1 record this season. Fort Hays State is now 134-34 when ranked in the poll during the DII era. Glenville State, the lone undefeated team in Division II, held on to the top spot in the coaches poll for the fifth week in a row while Texas A&amp;M-Commerce rose one spot to first in the media poll. The Tigers are the only MIAA program recognized in this week's coaches poll, while Missouri Southern is in the receiving votes category in the media ranks. Looking around the region, the Tigers are joined in the top 25 by No. 13 Saint Cloud State and No. 19 Southwestern Oklahoma State. The Huskies from SCSU are just behind FHSU in the media poll in ninth, while Minnesota-Duluth is ranked 15th. Fort Hays State will wrap up its home schedule Wednesday (Feb. 23) with Senior Night when Missouri Western comes to town at 5:30 p.m.

Trego senior Tanner Sells is ranked fifth at 152.

Hoxie, who won the Norton regional Saturday, is No. 1 again this week in the team rankings. Norton is second, Hill City third and Plainville fourth. Smith Center is eighth and Ellis ninth.

TOPEKA - "Voice of the Hays High Indians" Dustin Armbruster has been selected as the Kansas State High School Activities Association's 2022 Oscar Stauffer Award recipient and has been dubbed the KSHSAA Sportscaster of the Year.

This is the second time Armbruster has received the honor. He was awarded the Oscar Stauffer previously in 2013.

Armbruster has been with Eagle Radio in Hays since July of
2005. He currently is the operations manager, program director for KKQY, hosts
“The Bull Morning Show” on 101.9 FM, provides play-by-play for Hays High School
broadcasts and color commentary for Eagle’s broadcasts of Fort Hays State University
football and basketball. He also provides content for the sports section of
Hays Post and handles commercial production. Armbruster also pre­viously worked
in the sales department for a period of ten years.

Armbruster is the fifth Hays broadcaster to be awarded the Oscar Stauffer. Previous winners include Mike Hammett (2016, 2011), Gerard Wellbrock (2000, 1997, 1996), Wyatt Thompson (1989) and Bob Davis (1978, 1975).

FHSU defeated East Central 5-4 on Monday before falling 5-0 to Oklahoma Baptist in the second contest of the day. OBU hit a two-run home run in the first inning, then produced an RBI single and a 2-RBI double in the third.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6352">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;relieved for the final 3.2 innings and struck out three, while allowing just two hits. Now 4-8 overall, Fort Hays State is scheduled to return to action Friday-Sunday (Feb. 25-27) at the Washburn Classic in Topeka, Kan. FHSU is slated to play six opponents over three days, five of which are from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.&nbsp;&nbsp;
