HAYS, Kan. - The 22nd-ranked Fort Hays State women's soccer team defeated Nebraska-Kearney 1-0 on Sunday. The 50 mph wind gusts made it difficult for both squads to move the ball efficiently, but the Tigers were able to find the net in the second half with the wind at their back. FHSU finishes the regular season 10-1-7 overall, 5-1-5 in the MIAA, while UNK finishes 0-15-3 overall and 0-9-2 in the MIAA.
The Lopers had the wind in the first half as they put up six shots and placed three on goal, all saved by Isabel Robben. In the second half the ball stayed predominantly on the Tigers' attacking half as they took 12 shots and placed five on target. The lone Tiger goal came when Reilly Madden intercepted a Loper pass around midfield and played the ball ahead to Hannah Mares who got past a defender at the right time and struck it past the keeper in the 72nd minute.
The Tigers will now await seeding for the MIAA Tournament that will begin on Sunday, October 30. The Tigers finished in a tie for fourth in the MIAA standings with Central Oklahoma, both accumulating 20 points in conference play.
