The Tigers could not cash in on several offensive opportunities in a 4-1 loss to Southwest Minnesota State, but they bounced back for a 10-7 win over University of Mary. The Tigers have now had five consecutive splits on their last five dates of competition. Southwest Minnesota State 4, Fort Hays State 1 <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6353">Erika Flynn</a>&nbsp;started Fort Hays State's first contest by no-hitting Southwest Minnesota State through four innings. Meanwhile, the Tigers offense was able to produce baserunners in the second, third, and fourth innings, but could not find a run as the game remained scoreless going to the fifth. Flynn ran into some trouble in the fifth when she allowed a leadoff walk and then a well-placed bunt single that broke up her no-hit bid. After a sacrifice bunt, the Mustangs scored the game's first run on an RBI grounder on the infield. Since the throw was offline, SMSU kept two on base with a 1-0 lead. An RBI single made it 2-0 and then a sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 3-0.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6351">Morgan Schmidt</a>&nbsp;relieved Flynn in the fifth and got the Tigers out of the inning without further damage. 🥎 FHSU splits in Topeka

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's track and field team had one individual champion, broke two school records and totaled two All-MIAA medals Sunday (Feb. 27) on the final day of the 2022 MIAA Indoor Championships. The Tigers had five provisional marks on the day, finishing the week with four All-MIAA honors, eight provisional performances and two school records. FHSU place fifth as a team with 65 team points, the top finish at the indoor league meet and the top point total for the Tigers since FHSU joined the MIAA in 2006-07. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;won the MIAA title in the 60m dash for the second year in a row, leading the field with a time of 7.47. It was her third first-place finish at a league meet in her career along with one outdoor 100m dash title. The junior sprinter later earned her seventh All-MIAA accolade after breaking her school record and finishing second in the 200m dash with a time of 24.32. MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team had two individual champions, broke two school records and racked up four All-MIAA medals Sunday (Feb. 27) on the final day of the 2022 MIAA Indoor Championships. The Tigers had 10 provisional marks on the day, finishing the week with six All-MIAA honors, 15 provisional performances and five school records. FHSU place fifth as a team with 81 team points, tied for the top team finish in the indoor meet since the Tigers joined the MIAA in 2006-07. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6513">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;now has an MIAA Championship to go along with his NCAA DII outdoor pole vault national championship from last season. The junior was one of two athletes to clear the bar at 17-2.25, doing so on his first attempt. The height is another record for Stanley, one-half inch higher than his previous best set earlier this year. The Tigers put the hammer down in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bearcats 23-6 while hitting 75 percent from the floor to lock down the win and the 13th conference championship in program history. It was a tale of two quarters in the first half, with the Tigers shooting better than 50 percent in the first before struggling in the second quarter. Northwest did the exact opposite, hitting only three baskets over the first 10 minutes before burying 50 percent from the floor in the second period. Fort Hays State took the lead for good with a 9-0 run at the end of the first quarter before leading 33-26 at the break following a late bucket from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6437">Jaden Hobbs</a>.

🏀 Tiger women win second-straight MIAA title, beat Bearcats by 22

Hays High Gavin Meyers finished out his senior season with a perfect record and collected his first career state championship at 220 pounds Saturday at the 5A state wrestling tournament at Hartman Arena in Park City.

Sophomore Harley Zimmerman joined Meyers in bringing home a medal Saturday finishing second at 132 pounds.

Meyers, who is now a three-time state placer, pinned his way to the finals on Friday and then capped off the championship with a 5-2 win over Torin Forsyth from Blue Valley Southwest to claim the state title.

Zimmerman also had a strong run to get to the championship match.&nbsp;

On Friday he won by a first-round fall, injury default and a 10-3 decision to get to the finals.

But in the finals Saturday he lost an 8-5 matchup with Hayden Mills from Blue Valley Southwest.

Zimmerman finished 44-4 and after finished fourth as a freshman he is a two-time state placer.

The Indians finished 23rd as a team with 65 points.

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Fort Hays State took its shot at stopping Northwest Missouri State's run of consecutive MIAA regular season championships at eight, but came up short after a great second-half run to get the game tied with 11:16 remaining. The No. 13 ranked Bearcats won by a score of 57-49 over the No. 18 ranked Tigers. FHSU finished third in the MIAA standings at 17-5 and finished the regular season at 22-5 overall. Northwest Missouri State (25-5, 18-4 MIAA) shared the MIAA regular season title with Central Oklahoma (23-5, 18-4 MIAA), which defeated Missouri Southern. It is their ninth straight regular season title, but their seven-year run of winning the title outright came to an end.

After going up 7-6 in the first half, Fort Hays State went cold offensively and saw Northwest Missouri State go on a 15-0 run to take a 21-7 lead. The Tigers were held scoreless for nearly 10 minutes before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;hit a jumper to end the cold spell. The Bearcats went into the locker room with a comfortable 29-15 lead. That comfortable lead became uncomfortable in the second half as the Tigers began chipping away at the Bearcat lead with their usual tough defense. The Tigers would climb all the way back to even with the Bearcats by going on an 18-4 run, tying the game at 33-33 on a pair of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6464">Elijah Nnanabu</a>&nbsp;free throws with 11:16 remaining. In that run, the Tigers went 7-of-12 from the field and held the Bearcats to just 1-of-9 shooting.

The Tigers had a couple of opportunities to take a lead, but came up empty on consecutive trips. The Bearcats then woke from their offensive slumber to go on an 8-0 burst to take a 41-33 lead. Diego Bernard triggered the run for NWMSU, scoring the first five points and then Trevor Hudgins capped it with a transition 3-point bucket with just over seven minutes to go. The Tigers cut the lead to five a couple more times, but the Bearcats held them off the rest of the way. WACO, Texas (AP) — Jeremy Sochan and his teammates kept encouraging each other after 10th-ranked Baylor got down big early again against No. 5 Kansas, only three weeks after an embarrassing loss to the Jayhawks. The Bears then started making big impact plays.

Sochan had a block that led to a layup by Adam Flagler right after his two-handed slam dunk in a big run before halftime, and the Bears finally took the lead after the break in an 80-70 victory aturday night that kept the Jayhawks from wrapping up a share of their 20th Big 12 title.

“They were the aggressor in the first game and in the first six minutes this time,” Sochan said. “But we matched their mentality and their strength and just beat them.”

The Bears (24-5, 12-4 Big 12) didn’t take a lead until the opening minute after halftime, and went ahead to stay at 65-63 on Flo Thamba’s jumper with 4:07 left. That came after Ochai Agbaji, who had 27 points for Kansas, made a tying 3-pointer. Thamba finished with a career-high 18 points.

Kansas (23-5, 12-3) had their four-game winning streak snapped and missed a chance to lay claim to another Big 12 title. They still have three games left, including a game postponed from Jan. 1.

“Definitely a lost opportunity,” Agbaji said.

“You play a top-10 team on the road, it was a missed opportunity because we had payed so well early” Kansas coach Bill Self said. "I didn’t go into the game thinking that this was going to be a great opportunity. I went in the game knowing that you had to play really well in order to win, and we didn’t play well enough.”

Baylor, the defending national and Big 12 champions who lost 83-59 in Lawrence on Feb. 5, began the day tied with No. 9 Texas Tech for second place in the Big 12.

But the Red Raiders (22-7, 11-5), who swept their two games against Baylor and split with Kansas, lost 69-66 at TCU earlier Saturday. The Jayhawks play TCU twice in three days next week.

The Bears took their first lead with a blistering opening minute of the second half, with Kendall Brown blocking a shot and then running the court for a slam dunk after a long bounce pass from James Akinjo that made 33-32 and sent the record crowd of 10,628 into a frenzy.

There was then a technical foul assessed against Self, who was irate that there wasn't a foul called on a shot by Christian Braun. Self was near midcourt after the non-call, which came after the Jayhawks never went to the free throw line before halftime. James Akinjo made both free throws.

Braun had 17 points and 10 rebounds. David McCormack had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Adam Flagler added 13 points for Baylor, while Akinjo had 12. Matthew Mayer had nine points and 12 rebounds.

Thamba, the big man remaining after Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua's season-ending left knee injury two weeks ago, had 12 of Baylor's first 17 points.

“I felt like our guards early on in the game tried to force some unnecessary shots,” Thamba said. “But once we started getting easies, attacking the lane and offensive rebound opportunities were there, so it was just finishes.”

Baylor was down 28-15, matching its largest deficit, before a layup by Thamba ignited a 10-0 run. The Bears were within 28-25 after Sochan blocked a shot and swatted it to Flager, drove the court and witched the ball from his left to right hand in the air for the layup.

🏀 No. 10 Baylor rallies to beat No. 5 Kansas

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Fort Hays State wrestling team competed in the Super Region VI Championships on Saturday.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5807">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;(184),&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5794">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;(197), and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5790">A.J. Cooper</a>&nbsp;(285) punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships by placing in the top three in their respective weight classes. Verhaeghe&nbsp;and Cooper both reached the regional championship bout before placing second, while Henry fought his way through the consolation bracket before winning the third-place match.&nbsp;The Tigers placed sixth as a team out of 11 programs with 66 points. Verhaeghe was one of the few Tigers who did not receive a first-round bye. He picked up a second period fall in his first match, a 7-4 decision in the quarterfinals, and a 5-3 decision over No. 8 Anderson Salisbury (Colorado School of Mines) to advance to the finals and secure his spot in St. Louis. MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team totaled two All-MIAA medals, broke three school records and hit nine provisional performances on day two of the 2022 MIAA Indoor Championships Saturday. The Tigers sit in sixth as a team through six events with 23 points. The day began with the culmination of the heptathlon, where&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6484">Nolan Churchman</a>&nbsp;broke his own record by 129 points with a seven-event total of 5,433, placing second and earning All-MIAA honors. The Hoxie Indians had three individual state champions and seven medal winners on their way to the 3-2-1A team championship this weekend at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.

Of the 14 weight classes Hoxie collected three individual championship, Norton finished with two and nine other schools had an individual champion.

Hoxie finished with 186 total points. Douglass was second with 89 points and Plainville fourth with 84.

Ellis had four state placers with Mason Younger finished second at 120 pounds. Jarrett Mader was sixth at 138. George Crawford fifth at 160 and Mason Gottschalk was fourth at 182.

TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State Softball split a pair of games to open the Washburn Invitational on Saturday. The Tigers opened the day with a 6-3 win over St. Cloud State, but fell on a late comeback to Missouri-St. Louis in the nightcap. Fort Hays State 6, St. Cloud State 3 Fort Hays State jumped out to an early lead and never let go in their first contest of the day.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6338">Loren Beggs</a>&nbsp;hit a solo home run in the first inning to put the Tigers in the lead. FHSU tacked on a couple more runs in the third when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6339">Sara Breckbill</a>&nbsp;made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly RBI and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6355">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;had an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0. ⚾ Tigers fall in extra innings in conference opener at Washburn

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - Caleb Grill hit 6 of 10 from 3-point range to score 18 points off the Iowa State bench, and Izaiah Brockington added 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Cyclones held off a late rally to edge Kansas State, 74-73 on Saturday to earn their 20th win of the season. 

Iowa State has now won four straight games after losing to the Wildcats at home, 75-69 on Feb. 12. 

The Cyclones held a two-point lead at intermission, 37-35, and Kansas State tied the game less than a minute into the second half on a 3-pointer by Nijel Pack. After a Pack jumper got the Wildcats within one, 42-41 with more than 15 minutes left, Iowa State went on a 16-2 run to take a 15-point lead with 12 minutes to play.

Mike McGuirl and Mark Smith sparked a 12-0 run with back-to-back 3s to cut the deficit to three points, and after Tyrese Hunter hit one of two from the free-throw line, Pack hit a jumper to make it 59-57 with 5:39 left. Robert Jones scored on a layup, and Brockington and Hunter each added two free throws to push the lead to 10 points. 

Markquis Nowell hit 11 of 12 free throws in the final 3:14 and Pack hit a 3 with a second left to set the final score.

Hunter hit 8 of 10 from the free-throw line and contributed 13 points with 10 assists and three steals for Iowa State (20-9, 7-9 Big 12). The Cyclones hit 23 of 52 from the field (44.2%), including 10 of 25 from long range, but Grill was the lone shooter to hit more than one from distance. 

Pack finished with 32 points, his third game with 30 or more, and hit 6 of 9 from behind the arc. Nowell hit 14 of 16 free throws to add 16 points. Mark Smith added 12 points and nine rebounds. 

With two games left in the regular season, Iowa State is in fifth place in the Big 12 Conference standings, one game ahead of TCU. Kansas State is tied with Oklahoma State for seventh. The Big 12 Conference tournament opens on March 9 with the No. 8 seed facing the No. 9 seed. 

Iowa State faces Oklahoma State on Wednesday at home and ends the regular season Saturday at No. 10 Baylor. Kansas State travels to Lubbock to face No. 9 Texas Tech on Monday and hosts Oklahoma Saturday in the regular-season finale.

Seniors Hobbs and Randall both hit career milestones in Fort Hays State's overtime win over Missouri Western on Wednesday. Hobbs reached 1,000 points in her career at FHSU, becoming the 23rd player in program history to hit that plateau, while becoming just the third player to surpass 400 assists at Fort Hays State. She is the first to accomplish both feats. Randall, meanwhile, climbed into the top 10 on the all-time scoring list at Fort Hays State. Now with 1,329 points, she needs 14 more points to pass former teammate and current student assistant Kacey Kennett to move into ninth. Fort Hays State is 18-10 all-time against Northwest Missouri State, including wins in each of the last six matchups and 14 of the last 15. Northwest holds a slim 7-6 lead in games played in Maryville. The Tigers are 16-4 against Northwest under Hobson, including a 7-4 mark on the road.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A three point game in Great Bend came down to free throw shooting. Great Bend made 20 of 24 attempts while Hays made just 8 of 21 in a 48-45 victory for the Panthers.

Neither team scored for over three minutes of the first quarter. Hays took the lead at 3-0 and 5-2. The two teams swapped the lead seven times and were tied on five occasions in the first half, including at halftime 16-16.

The Indians led twice early in the third quarter before Great Bend took the lead back on back to back field goals with six minutes left in the third.&nbsp;

Hays trailed 27-25 enter the fourth quarter but took the lead back at 30-28 and 32-30. At each of those scores Hays had the ball but couldn't extend the lead to two possessions.

Great Bend went on the longest run of the game by scoring eight straight points for a 38-32 lead. Hays put the Panthers at the free throw line over the last 1:20 and Great Bend responded by making 10 of 14. The last two makes pushed the lead to 48-45 with five seconds left. The Indians got a decent look at a three to end the game but could not connect.

Hays finishes the regular season at 12-8 and 4-4 in conference play. Great Bend improves to 7-13 and 2-6. The Indians drop to the eight seed in postseason play and will host a game next Wednesday evening.

Hays never trailed and the game was never tied as the Indians beat Great Bend 58-45 to close the regular season. Hays scored the first eight points of the first and second quarters. The Panthers did get within two points twice in the first but was never closer rest of the game.

The second quarter 8-0 run put Hays up 13 with 4:49 left. The Indians only scored two more points before halftime and Great Bend closed within six at 25-19.

The Panthers continued to chip away at the lead at 27-24 with 6:50 left in the third. Hays responded with a 15-6 run to close the third quarter and pull out to a 42-30 advantage.

Hays led by at least seven through the entire fourth quarter, winning 58-45.&nbsp;

The victory pushes Hays to 19-1 and 8-0 in the WAC. Hays finishes the last to season undefeated in league play. Great Bend falls to 7-13, 3-5.

Hays will be the top seed in 5A West and host on Tuesday.

Jace Linenberger led all scoring with 19. Carson Kieffer added 13.

PARK CITY – Hays High junior Sarah Zimmerman earned a second-place
finish at 109 pounds Thursday at the 5-6A state wrestling championship
tournament in Park City.

After pinning her way to the championship, and a 3-0 record Wednesday,
Zimmerman lost to Larissa Garcia from Wichita North by a third-period fall.

Zimmerman beat Garcia for the regional championship earlier
this month. She finished 29-5.

At 143 pounds Lexi Burton bounced all the way back from losing
here first match of the day on Wednesday to finish sixth. 

She won three consolation matches by fall before losing in
the in the consolation semifinals and the fifth place match. She finishes the
season 22-16.

Both Addison Otte at 120 pounds and Katie Gutierrez at 132
pounds lost in the consolation quarterfinals Thursday. 

Otte finished the tournament 2-2 and 18-15 on the season.

Gutierrez also finished 2-2 and was 18-13 to finish the
season. 

Hays collected 71 team points and finished fifth.

At the 4-1A state tournament in Salina TMP’s Claudine Stein finished
1-2 for the tournament.

She won her first match on Wednesday but lost in the
championship quarterfinals and again in the consolation wrestlebacks on Thursday.
She finished the year 20-19.

Plainville’s Zoe Brown earned a sixth-place finish at 138
pounds. 

Brown dropped her first match of the tournament but then won

At 120 pounds Caxton Smyth went 2-2 at the state tournament
and failed to medal.

Stockton’s Ashlyn Hahn earned a third-place finish at 115

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State did its part to stay in the MIAA regular season championship picture on Wednesday by defeating Missouri Western at Gross Memorial Coliseum 56-42. The Tigers moved into a three-way tie for first place, after Central Oklahoma lost by one point at home. It all comes down to Saturday to see if there will be an outright champion, or a share of the title. FHSU is now 22-4 overall and 17-4 in the MIAA.

The Tigers used their usual tough defense coupled with limiting possessions to slow down the Griffons' offensive attack. The Tigers initially took the lead and trailed only once when Will Eames of Missouri Western broke a 7-7 tie with a bucket in the early going.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;responded with one of his five 3-point field goals on the night to put the Tigers back on top and they never let go of the lead from that point. Neither team shot over 35 percent from the field in the first half and the Tigers battled to a 21-17 lead at halftime.

The Tigers pushed their lead to double figures seven times in the second half. The Griffons were able to get the lead down to six with 3:28 to play, but the Tigers responded with a quick 5-0 burst to get the lead back to 11. FHSU closed the game on 6-0 run to create the 14-point final margin, which turned out to be the biggest lead of the night. Vitztum finished with a big double-double on Senior Night with 21 points and 16 rebounds. He became the first player in FHSU men's program history to total at least 1,500 points and 900 rebounds when he secured his seventh rebound of the game. However, by pulling down 16 rebounds, he moved to second all-time in rebounds at FHSU now with 909, passing Mike Pauls (907). Barton Snow is at the top of the list with 980. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;was the only other Tiger to score in double figures in the low-scoring contest. He had 14, so he combined with Vitztum to generate 62.5 percent of the team's points. Hammeke also dished out a team-best eight assists.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6462">Bjarni Jonsson</a>&nbsp;was the next-closest to double figures with seven points. The Tigers (24-3, 18-3 MIAA) now hold a half-game lead over Missouri Southern in first place in the MIAA standings, with the Lions to play Thursday before both teams wrap up the regular season on Saturday. Fort Hays State came away victorious for the 10th-consecutive time in overtime, while playing extra time for the first time in nearly two years. The Tigers outscored Missouri Western (20-7, 14-7 MIAA) by six in the fourth quarter and by nine in overtime to complete the come-from-behind win.
