The Tigers came up just a run short in their first game of the day, falling 3-2 to Southern Arkansas, but a two-run home run by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6339">Sara Breckbill</a>&nbsp;lifted the Tigers to a 4-2 win over Arkansas Tech in eight innings. Southern Arkansas 3, Fort Hays State 2 The Tigers had run-scoring opportunities in several innings, but were only able to make good on their opportunity in the fifth by scoring a pair of runs. Southern Arkansas had slowly built a 3-0 lead by that point. FHSU had runners at first and third in the seventh with one out, but could not find a way to get the tying run across the plate from third. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6346">Lindsey Kelly</a>&nbsp;had a strong effort at the plate, going 4-for-4 all on singles. The Rangers (6-7-1) put together two big innings to complete the come-from-behind win. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — J’Wan Roberts’ dunk with 1.3 seconds remaining in double overtime gave No. 14 Houston a stirring 76-74 victory over Wichita State on Sunday.

It was Roberts’ only basked of the game and followed Wichita State’s Craig Porter hitting a tying 3-point shot with 5.4 seconds remaining in the second overtime.

The Cougars took the inbounds and raced up the floor hitting Roberts for the uncontested game-winner.

Josh Carlton scored 11 of his 23 points in the two overtimes, finishing 9 of 14 from the floor for Houston (22-4, 11-2 American).

Jamal Shead scored 13 points for the Cougars while Kyler Edwards, Fabian White and Ramon Walker each added 11.

Porter and Ricky Council each scored 17 for Wichita State (13-10, 4-7) while Tyson Etienne added 15.

Houston built a six-point lead in the first overtime behind Carlton, but Wichita State rallied and Porter's free throw tied it with 18.1 seconds left. Walker's 3-pointer at the buzzer fell short sending it to a second OT.

Houston leads the American in rebounding margin and offensive rebounding percentage (37.2 coming into the game).

But the Shockers outrebounded the Cougars 20-19 in the first half, allowing Houston only four offensive rebounds in 20 first-half opportunities. Wichita State was even better in the second half, outrebounding the Cougars 15-12. 🏀 No. 14 Houston edges Wichita State in double OT

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Kansas enters the final two weeks before the Big 12 Tournament in control of its own chances to earn at least a share of its 20th regular-season championship. There's still time to clean up the glitches that keep the sixth-ranked Jayhawks from winning some games decisively. Ochai Agbaji scored 23 points, David McCormack had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Kansas withstood a second-half comeback from West Virginia for a 71-58 victory Saturday night.

The Jayhawks (22-4, 11-2) maintained their two-game lead in the Big 12 over No. 7 Baylor and No. 11 Texas Tech with five games remaining before the conference tournament. “We can see the finish line now,” coach Bill Self said. “The only reason we need help is if we don’t take care of business. So, I told our guys that right before we played and they took care of business.”

Kansas had a 49-32 rebounding advantage but committed 15 turnovers that allowed West Virginia to keep it close most of the way. 

“Sometimes we just have mental lapses and make bonehead mistakes, but when the game is on the line we have to make sure we lock in,” McCormack said. 

West Virginia (14-12, 3-10) has lost 10 of its last 11. The Mountaineers struggled through a 1-for-14 shooting stretch in the first half, missed numerous layups and short jumpers throughout the game and shot 28% (19 of 68) overall. 

“I was thinking about, instead of shooting a layup, just turn around, throw it back out and let a guy shoot a 3," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. "At the end of the day, that probably would be more fruitful for us than having guys continue to miss layups. 

“I've been doing this a long time. I've never seen anything like it.”

Gabe Osabuohien, West Virginia’s top defender, returned from a one-game benching after picked up three technical fouls in two previous games, including an ejection. Less than a minute after he entered Saturday, Osabuohien took a charge on Mitch Lightfoot. 

But the Mountaineers couldn’t do much to stop Agbaji, the Big 12’s leading scorer who had a 3-pointer and a layup during a 9-0 run that gave the Jayhawks a 42-30 lead with 17:11 remaining. 

Kansas followed that with a more than four-minute scoring drought. Sean McNeil hit two 3-pointers and Taz Sherman one during a 13-point West Virginia burst that cut the deficit to 44-43 with 12:39 left. But the Mountaineers never retook a lead they only held early in the game. 

“Just in timeouts, any huddles we had during the game, I just told the guys to keep their composure," Agbaji said. "They’re going to make their runs. It’s a game of runs. They’re obviously playing at home, they got the crowd. Just stay in it and keep playing our game.” 

McCormick made layups less than a minute apart, sank two free throws and Kansas pushed its lead back to 60-48 with 5:11 left.

West Virginia was limited to two field goals over the final eight minutes. McNeil led the Mountaineers with 18 points and Sherman, second in the Big 12 to Agbaji in scoring, added 16. 

Christian Braun added 10 points and he and Jalen Wilson had 11 rebounds for Kansas, which won in Morgantown for the fourth time in 10 tries under Self. 

Kansas: In late February, it’s all about staying healthy and gaining momentum toward tournament time, and Kansas has won three straight. But there are plenty of challenges left, including a trip to Baylor next Saturday. 

West Virginia: The week wasn’t a total loss for the Mountaineers, whose only representation at the NCAA Tournament could be Huggins. He was announced Friday among the finalists for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The class of 2022 will be announced at the Final Four on April 2 in New Orleans.

Huggins seems to think his team still has a chance to make the Big Dance. 

“There's still opportunity there," he said. "As long as there's an opportunity there and there's a chance to keep fighting, we're going to keep fighting.” 

Kansas: Hosts rival Kansas State on Tuesday. The Jayhawks won 78-75 on the road in their earlier meeting. 

West Virginia: Travels to TCU on Monday in a makeup of a Jan. 3 game that was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the Horned Frogs’ program. The Mountaineers will play three games in six days.

The Hoxie Indians qualified 10 wrestlers for next weeks 3-2-1A state wrestling tournament this week on their way to claiming the regional championship in Norton.

Hoxie finished with 202.5 points followed by Hill City, Phillipsburg, Smith Center and Plainville to round of the top five.

Of their 10 placers inside the top four the Indians had four individual champions.

Hill City finished second as a team. The Ringnecks and Plainville both qualified five wrestlers for state.&nbsp;

🤼 Hoxie wins 3-2-1A Norton regional

Harley Zimmerman and Gavin Meyers each claimed individual regional titles at the 5A Regional Tournament in Valley Center on Saturday. Each moved into the championship round by winning matches on Friday.

The top eight in each of the two regionals make the state tournament. By the end of Saturday, Hays had eight collecting that honor.

The Indians placed 7th as a team at 127 points. Goddard won the titles at 223 followed by Newton (181.5) and Maize (161.)

At 132 pounds Zimmerman moved to 38-2 on the season with a 2-1 decision over Keton Patterson of Maize. He pinned his first two opponents on Friday and made the championship with an 8-5 decision.

Gavin Meyers pinned his way through the regional. His first three matches lasted a total of 99 seconds. Meyers defeated Bronx Wood of Andover Central by fall at 3:24. Meyers is 33-0 on the year and is the only undefeated 5A wrestler headed to state.

Elijah McCullough (25-15) will compete at the state tournament with a 5th place finish at 106 pounds. He won his first match by fall then had to wrestle through the backside of the bracket following a second round loss. McCullough won his next two matches to earn a spot and ultimately landing in the 5th place match where he won 7-1.

Brayden Hines (18-10) of qualifies with a 6th place finish at 120. Hines received a bye in the first round then suffered a defeat in the second. Hines won his next matches by fall to guarantee a trip to state. He ended up in the 5th place match were he lost by fall.

In the 126 pound weight division Cyrus Vajnar (21-12) heads to state with a 7th place showing.&nbsp;Vajnar opened his tournament with a win and then loss to land on the backside of the bracket. He finished his tourney with a victory by pin in the 7th place match.

Aaron Weigel (26-11) will represent Hays at 152 pounds after finishing in 7th place. Weigel had to wrestle his way to state after losing an opening round decision 6-2. He had to win his next three matches to secure a spot in state. He did exactly that and eventually landed in the 7th place match where he won 7-4.

At 160 pounds, Dalton Dale (21-16) finished 7th to qualify. Dale like many of his teammates won the first round and lost the second. He won a 5-1 decision before landing in the 7th place match where he won 5-2.

⚾ Tiger split doubleheader with Regis

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Fort Hays State battled to for a 61-54 win at Central Missouri on Saturday (Feb. 19) to sweep the regular season series and move to 21-4 overall and 16-4 in the MIAA. The Tigers moved to within a game of the MIAA lead, held by Central Oklahoma (17-3 MIAA), with the win after Northwest Missouri State (16-3 MIAA) fell at home to Washburn. The Tigers struggled a bit offensively in the early going and fell down by eight at 16-8 just over eight minutes into the contest. The Tigers went on a 6-0 burst to get the Mule lead back to two and then moments later used an 11-0 run to turn a six-point deficit into a five-point lead at 25-20. FHSU held onto the lead the remainder of the first half and took a 32-29 lead into the locker room.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6470">Nyjee Wright</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers with seven points each at the break. When Vitztum hit the first of two free throws with 2:39 remaining in the half, he reached the 1,500-point mark for his career at FHSU. He became the fifth player in program history to reach that milestone. Fort Hays State opened the second half on an 8-2 run, capped by a Wright 3-point field goal to take a nine-point lead with 15:35 to go. UCM trimmed the lead back to five, but then a 6-0 burst gave the Tigers an 11-point advantage with 12 minutes remaining when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6459">Traejon Davis</a>&nbsp;tipped a ball in on an offensive rebound. The Mules eventually trimmed the lead down to four with just over a minute to play, but&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6464">Elijah Nnanabu</a>&nbsp;made a key driving layup with 40 seconds remaining to get the lead back to six. The Tigers kept the Mules scoreless the rest of the way.

Vitztum and Wright tied for a team-high 12 points for the Tigers, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;added 11. Nnanabu was the top scorer off the bench with eight. Vitztum finished with his 13th&nbsp;double-double of the season by pulling down 11 rebounds. He is now just seven rebounds shy of 900 in his career. Hammeke led the Tigers in assists with five. Koray Gilbert led UCM with 15 points, followed by Cameron Hunter with 14. Hunter had five assists for the Mules. The Tigers will enter the final week of regular season play much alive in the fight for the MIAA regular season title. They are just one game back of Central Oklahoma and a half-game back of Northwest Missouri State, which plays Emporia State on Monday night. Fort Hays State hosts Missouri Western for Senior Night on Wednesday in Hays at 7:30 pm, which follows the women's contest at 5:30 pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The No. 9 ranked Tigers improved to 23-3 overall and 17-3 in the MIAA, while the Jennies moved to 17-10 overall and 13-7 in the MIAA. Fort Hays State entered the game ranked No. 1 in the first NCAA region rankings, released earlier this week, while Central Missouri held the No. 10 ranking in the region. The Tigers put together a strong first half effort, holding the Jennies to just 2-of-14 shooting in the first quarter to build a 16-7 lead, then increased that lead to 20, 39-19, by halftime. FHSU led by as many as 22 points in the first half.

He is third all-time in rebounds with 882 and looks to become the third Tiger in history to pull down 900. HAYS -&nbsp;The TMP-Marian Monarchs come up short in the final non-league game of the regular season Friday night after Life Prep Academy 62-58.

The Fire opened the game with a 4-0 lead but the Monarchs stormed back to take a 14-6 lead. Dylar Werth scored seven points in the first period and Jace Wentling added four more as the Monarchs built a 14-9 lead after one quarter of action.

Down five Life Prep opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run to go up by three at 19-16.

The Monarchs briefly retook the lead at 21-19 before Life Prep outscored the Monarchs 11-2 to build a 30-23 lead.

TMP trailed by five at halftime and trailed by eight to open the third quarter before catching fire from three.

After making just two 3-pointers in the first half the Monarchs connected on six of them in the third quarter as they put together a 24-5 run to take a 45-40 lead. But Life Prep combined to make four 3-pointers in the period as TMP took a 51-48 lead into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter saw Life Prep double up TMP 14-7 on their way to the 62-58 win.

The 62 points was the most allowed since the second game of the season when they gave up 75 to Lawrence Free State.

TMP’s Gavin Unrein led four Monarchs in double-figures with 13 points. Bryce Seib finished with 12 points and Dylan Werth and Kenton Ginther each added 11 points.

The TMP boys and girls will close out the regular season Tuesday at Plainville.&nbsp;

Hays scored a season high point total and matched their season low in turnovers as they cruise past Garden City 60-36. The game was tied twice in the first four minutes at two and seven. Hays led 10-9&nbsp; with 2:50 left in the first before going on a 13-0 run that last into the second quarter. The Buffaloes went scoreless for seven minutes.

Once the Indians took a double digit lead in the second quarter they never led by less than twelve rest of the night and had a 29-12 advantage at halftime.

The two teams traded baskets to open the second half before a 11-4 run by Hays gave the Indians their first twenty point lead. The lead continued to expand in the fourth quarter to thirty points which started a continuous clock for the remainder of the game.

Hays outscored Garden City in each of the four quarters, winning 60-36. Their previous season high in points had been 58 versus Dodge City.

Hays was led by Molly Martin's game high 14.&nbsp;Aleyia Ruder and Jillyan Sheldon scored 9 each. Carly Lang put up 8 points and 10 rebounds. Jersey Johnson, who was crowned queen during Indian Call between games, scored 7. Garden City was paced by Aileen Becerril with 12.

Garden City hit their first shot of the game for a 3-0 lead after the opening possession. Hays responded with a 12-2 run and grabbed two nine point leads in the first quarter before settling for an 18-11 lead through the first eight minutes.

The Indians built a pair of double digit leads before Garden City pulled within six at 24-18. The Indians ended the quarter with a Jace Linenberger three point play and a Carson Kieffer three pointer for a 30-18 halftime lead.

The Indians' advantage never dipped below 13 in the second half. Hays did lead by 18 at 41-23 before Garden City made a short run of 7-2 but was never closer than 43-30 rest of the game.

Hays led by 15 entering the fourth quarter and quickly added their advantage with a 9-0 run. The Indians outscored Garden City in every quarter on their way to a 56-37 victory.

Smoky Hills PBS Gears Up for 3-2-1A State Wrestling

NORTON – The TMP-Marian boys and girls basketball teams
returned to Mid-Continent League play Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of the
Bluejays on the road in Norton.

Girls:TMP 62, Norton 44 The TMP Lady Monarchs opened the game on a 16-4 run and led
wire-to-wire Thursday on their way to a 62-44 win over the Norton Lady Jays.

TMP’s Emilee Lane scored 10 first quarter points as the
Monarchs (16-3, 9-1 MCL) outscored Norton 21-9 in the first period.

Sophia Balthazor knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the
quarter and Jaci VonLintel added five more first quarter points as TMP built a
12-point lead.

The Monarchs continue to extend their lead into the second
quarter with a 12-6 run to take a 33-15 lead. 

They finished the quarter on a 7-2 run and led at halftime
40-21.

TMP took their largest lead of the game coming out of the
halftime break on a Megan Hamel field goal at 43-21.

After Norton ( 5-14, 3-7) cut the lead to 17 points Balthazor
scored 13 straight for TMP to end the third quarter and open the fourth quarter
as the Monarchs secure the 62-44 victory.

Sophia Balthazor led all scorers with 23 points. Jaci
VonLintel added 15 points and Emilee Lane chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds.
With the 10 rebounds she goes over 700 rebounds for her career.

Boys: TMP 46, Norton 44 OT The TMP boys improved to 2-0 in overtime this season as they
rallied from down 15-points in the first half in a 46-44 win over the Norton Bluejays.

The Monarchs (14-3, 9-0) were able to keep it close in the
opening part of the first quarter thanks to 3-pointers for Gavin Unrein and Kenton
Ginther that cut the Norton lead to 9-8.

The Bluejays (12-6, 8-1) were able to string together a 14-0
run to end the first quarter and big the second on a pair of Eli Jones 3-pointers
for a 23-8 Norton lead.

TMP’s Bryce Seib scored all six points in the second quarter
for the Monarchs that cut the deficit to nine at 23-14 at halftime.

After trailing by nine to open the third quarter TMP
outscored TMP 12-3 to end the third quarter and begin the fourth quarter tying
the game at 34.

The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth twice at the
end of regulation and three more in overtime before TMP’s Dylan Werth got free
with just four seconds left for a layup to put TMP up 46-44.

Dylan Werth led all scorers with 14 points and nine
rebounds. Bryce Seib scored nine and Kade Harris and Gavin Unrein added eight
points each.

The Monarchs are now the lone upbeat team in MCL play with
one more league game set for Tuesday at Plainville.

🏀TMP girls cruise; boys rally for wins at Norton

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – After a winter storm rolled through Jefferson City on Thursda, Fort Hays State took Jason Gym by storm with a 73-35 win over Lincoln University. With the blowout win, FHSU reached at least 20 wins in a season for the 10th&nbsp;time under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1048">Mark Johnson</a>. The Tigers improved to 20-4 overall and 15-4 in the MIAA, while Lincoln fell to 2-21 overall and 1-17 in the MIAA.

The 38-point win marked the largest margin of victory for the Tigers in an MIAA road game, eclipsing the 33-point win the Tigers produced at Lincoln in 2010-11. The 2010-11 team finished second in the MIAA, won the MIAA Tournament, and went on to play in the NCAA Tournament finishing with 26 wins. The 38-point spread was the second largest for the Tigers in a road game under&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1048">Mark Johnson</a>, with a 42-point win at UC-Colorado Springs all the way back on January 18, 2003 being the largest in a road game during his tenure.

By holding Lincoln to just 35 points, the Tigers set a new program low for points allowed in an MIAA game, eclipsing the old record of 44 by nine. The old record was set on January 28, 2015 at Emporia State in a 66-44 win. It also set a new low for points allowed to a conference opponent during the&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1048">Mark Johnson</a>&nbsp;era, which goes back to 2001-02. This was the first time one of his teams held a conference opponent under 40. The 35 points were the second-fewest allowed by the Tigers overall this season after holding Manhattan Christian to just 34 points earlier this season. The Tigers took command of this game by halftime with a 31-12 lead. The 12 points scored by Lincoln matched the lowest allowed by the Tigers to a conference opponent in the first half this season, which they did to Nebraska-Kearney on December 11 in a 64-46 win in Hays. After leading just 12-9, the Tigers went on a 19-3 run to close the first half. FHSU held Lincoln to just those three points over the final 12:19 of the first half. FHSU limited Lincoln to just 4-of-19 shooting from the field in the first half (21.1 percent) and shut Lincoln out beyond the 3-point line (0-of-8). The Tigers really put the game away in the first seven minutes of the second half, going on a 22-2 run to take a commanding 39-point lead of 53-14. The lead eventually reached its peak with 6:01 to go with FHSU leading by 42 (68-26) before the final margin rested at 38. Combining the lock down of Lincoln's offense from the first half through the first seven minutes of the second half, FHSU held Lincoln to just five points for just shy of a 20-minute span. Lincoln finished at just 26 percent from the field as a team for the game (13-of-50), while FHSU countered at 49.2 percent (29-of-59). The Tigers (22-3, 16-3) hit more than 50 percent from the floor for the third game in a row while burying nine shots from behind the arc to grab the road win. Six early points from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6443">Katie Wagner</a>&nbsp;and a 3-pointer from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6437">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;helped the Tigers to an early four-point lead before Lincoln scored six straight to take the lead, 13-11. Fort Hays State proceeded to close the quarter on a 9-0 run to lead by seven, capped off by a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6439">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;layup just before the horn sounded.

The Blue Tigers closed within two by the midway point of the second quarter before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6447">Lauren West</a>&nbsp;hit a trio of 3-pointers in less than 90 seconds to balloon the lead to 12, 38-26. FHSU led by as many as 16 before taking a 42-29 lead into the locker room. Fort Hays State's largest lead of 18 came midway through the period on a free throw from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6438">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;before Lincoln closed the quarter on a 17-7 run to narrow the gap to eight, 56-48.

Lincoln got as close as six after scoring first in the final frame before another 3-pointer from West ended the Blue Tiger run. Hobbs hit back-to-back buckets for the Tigers before a long two from Randall put the Tigers back up by 16, 68-52. The Blue Tigers kept battling, closing within single digits three more times over the final four minutes. Randall scored again at the 2:37 mark, hitting a layup with the left hand after a strong post move to push the senior past 1,300 career points. She's just the 11th player to hit that milestone at Fort Hays State. The Tigers hit 51.9 percent from the floor in the win (27-of-52), including a 9-for-22 effort from behind the arc (40.9 percent), while hitting 13-of-16 from the line (81.3 percent). Lincoln hit 45.8 percent from the floor (27-of-59), its third-best outing in an MIAA game this season. Fort Hays State took care of business on the boards, outrebounding the Blue Tigers by 13, 38-25. Fort Hays State committed 20 turnovers in the victory, one off its season high. Five Tigers scored in double figures for the fourth time this season, including a team-high 17 from West thanks to five 3-pointers, the most in a game by a Tiger this season. The Blue Tigers kept battling, closing within single digits three more times over the final four minutes. Randall scored again at the 2:37 mark, hitting a layup with the left hand after a strong post move to push the senior past 1,300 career points. She's just the 11th player to hit that milestone at Fort Hays State. The Tigers hit 51.9 percent from the floor in the win (27-of-52), including a 9-for-22 effort from behind the arc (40.9 percent), while hitting 13-of-16 from the line (81.3 percent). Lincoln hit 45.8 percent from the floor (27-of-59), its third-best outing in an MIAA game this season. Fort Hays State took care of business on the boards, outrebounding the Blue Tigers by 13, 38-25. Fort Hays State committed 20 turnovers in the victory, one off its season high. Five Tigers scored in double figures for the fourth time this season, including a team-high 17 from West thanks to five 3-pointers, the most in a game by a Tiger this season. Hobbs, Wagner, Randall and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6440">Emma Ruddle</a>&nbsp;all had 10 points each, with Hollenbeck adding eight. Wagner grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to record her seventh double-double of the year. Hobbs dished out a team-high six assists. The Tigers will wrap up the road trip against Central Missouri on Saturday (Feb. 19) beginning at 1 p.m. in Warrensburg, Mo.&nbsp;&nbsp;
