JOSEPH, Mo. - The fourth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team opened the year where it left off last regular season, leading wire-to-wire in an 81-65 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State on Friday (Nov. 12) in the Hillyard Women's Basketball Tip-Off Classic. The win was Fort Hays State's 18th-consecutive season-opening victory and was the 44th-consecutive non-conference, regular season win for the team.

SEOSU momentarily narrowed the deficit to single digits late in the frame, but the Tigers closed the stanza on an 8-2 run to head into the fourth up 67-53. West added 10 points in her Tiger debut, while Earney had nine points and Dilsaver had six points, seven rebounds and three assists in their first game in an FHSU uniform. Hobbs distributed eight assists and added nine points, while Ruddle added nine points off the bench. Nine different Tigers scored, including seven with six or more points. The Tigers finished the game shooting 48.4 percent from the floor (30-of-62) while holding the Savage Storm to a 39.1 percent shooting effort (25-of-64). FHSU grabbed 10 more rebounds than SEOSU, 43-33. Both sides controlled the ball well, combining for just 19 turnovers in the contest (FHSU 10, SEOSU 9). Fort Hays State will wrap up the opening weekend against Sioux Falls Saturday (Nov. 13) beginning at 1:30 p.m.

FHSU will play in the first contest on both Friday and Saturday. The Tigers return nine players from last year's conference championship squad, including the top six scorers and seven of the top eight. FHSU brings back 88.6 percent of its offensive production after losing four players that combined to score an average of 8.2 points per game. Wagner led the Tigers in both scoring and rebounding in Sunday's exhibition at UConn, totaling 11 points and seven rebounds. Hollenbeck also scored in double figures, racking up 10 points, two rebounds and two assists. Four different Tigers hit shots from behind the arc, including two each from Hobbs and Randall and one from West and Dilsaver. Hobbs broke a pair of program records last season after averaging 6.0 assists per game and drilling 44.9 percent from behind the arc. And despite playing just 26 games, she finished second all-time in assists in a single season with 155 and had the fifth-most made 3-pointers with 70. Fort Hays State ranked in the top 10 nationally in seven categories, including assist/turnover ratio (1.38, 6th), assists (421, 2nd), blocked shots (108, 4th), free throw attempts (476, 6th), free throws made (352, 3rd), rebounds (965, 7th), and turnovers per game (11.7, 8th). The Tigers reached the 20-win plateau for the 10th consecutive season last year. That is twice as long as the next-best active streak in the MIAA (UCM, five). Fort Hays State tied the MIAA record for conference wins in a season after going 20-2 in conference play. Fort Hays State sits atop the preseason MIAA Coaches Poll and is tied for first in the Media Poll. It is the second time the Tigers have been ranked first in the preseason conference rankings and its the 10th year in a row the Tigers have been listed in the top five. The Tigers also did not have to look very far down the national rankings to find their name, with FHSU coming in fourth in the initial WBCA DII Coaches Poll and seventh in the preseason D2SIDA Media Poll. It is the highest preseason ranking ever for the Tigers in the coaches poll. FHSU is 110-31 all-time when ranked in the coaches poll, including a 10-1 record when ranked fourth. Head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1043">Tony Hobson</a>&nbsp;enters his 30th year as a collegiate head coach with a record of 695-211, just five wins shy of 700 career victories. He is 282-105 in his 13 seasons as head coach at Fort Hays State. The Tigers have never played either the Savage Storm or the Cougars before this season. FHSU has played 130 different schools in the history of the women's basketball program, going 81-49 when facing off with a school for the first time. Hobson is 16-3 in games against schools FHSU had never previously played. FHSU is 8-6 in St. Joseph, Mo. under Hobson, including a 4-0 mark in neutral-site contests. This is the third time the Tigers have opened the year in St. Joseph over the last six seasons (2016-17, 2019-20). The Tigers are 7-1 against GAC teams under Hobson and 16-12 all-time against current GAC institutions. FHSU is 17-2 against current NSIC programs under Hobson and 44-16 all-time. Fort Hays State has won its last 17 season openers, with the last loss coming in 2003. The Tigers have dominated non-conference play of late, winning their last 43 regular season, non-conference contests and 76 of the last 77. FHSU is 84-5 in regular season, non-conference games under Hobson. Scouting the Opposition Southeastern Oklahoma State -The Savage Storm are receiving votes in the preseason WBCA coaches poll, sitting in 39th place in the country. -SEOSU posted a 13-8 record a year ago, advancing to the GAC postseason championship game before falling to Southern Nazarene. -The Savage Storm return 10 players in addition to five true freshmen. -They return 72.4 percent of their scoring, including their top two scorers from a year ago and six of the top seven. -Kamryn Cantwell and Briley Moon are back after earning first team All-GAC honors last season. Cantwell led the team with 16.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game, while Moon added 15.8 points, 6.2 boards and 2.4 assists each night. Both players hit more than 40 percent of their shots from behind the arc. -As a team, the Savage storm averaged 66.2 points per game, hitting 43.5 percent from the floor and 37.8 percent from deep. They were outrebounded by an average of 3.4 rebounds per game. -Head coach Darin Grover is in his 17th year at SEOSU, accumulating a 248-193 record to date. Sioux Falls -Sioux Falls went 8-6 in 2020-21 after bowing out in the quarterfinals of the NSIC tournament against Minnesota Duluth. -The Cougars return 10 players and added 11 newcomers, including two transfers and nine freshmen. -USF returns 70.5 percent of its offensive production, including six of its top seven scorers from a year ago. -Anna Brecht is back after earning first team All-NSIC honors a year ago. She led the team with an average of 18.0 points per game while adding 5.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest. -Transfers include a grad transfer from Concordia-St. Paul in Danielle Schaub and sophomore Madison Birnbaum from Newman. -Sioux Falls averaged 71.6 points per game a year ago while grabbing 41.1 rebounds per game, an average of 4.2 more than its opponents per contest. -Head coach Travis Traphagen is in his 14th season with the Cougars. He carries a career record of 251-124 at USF. Looking Ahead The Tigers will play the first of 15 regular season home games next weekend when FHSU hosts St. Cloud State on Friday (Nov. 19) at 6 p.m. and Cameron on Saturday (Nov. 20) at 4 p.m. Newman will also be playing neutral site contests two hours before the Tigers on each day against the same team in reverse order.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Tigers will face off with a pair of regional opponents inside the MWSU Fieldhouse, including a matchup with Southeastern Oklahoma State on Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. and a date with Sioux Falls on Saturday starting at 1:30 p.m. Daily general admission tickets are available for&nbsp;$10 and are good for both games each day. FHSU will play in the first contest on both Friday and Saturday. The Tigers return nine players from last year's conference championship squad, including the top six scorers and seven of the top eight. FHSU brings back 88.6 percent of its offensive production after losing four players that combined to score an average of 8.2 points per game. Wagner led the Tigers in both scoring and rebounding in Sunday's exhibition at UConn, totaling 11 points and seven rebounds. Hollenbeck also scored in double figures, racking up 10 points, two rebounds and two assists. Four different Tigers hit shots from behind the arc, including two each from Hobbs and Randall and one from West and Dilsaver. Hobbs broke a pair of program records last season after averaging 6.0 assists per game and drilling 44.9 percent from behind the arc. And despite playing just 26 games, she finished second all-time in assists in a single season with 155 and had the fifth-most made 3-pointers with 70. Fort Hays State ranked in the top 10 nationally in seven categories, including assist/turnover ratio (1.38, 6th), assists (421, 2nd), blocked shots (108, 4th), free throw attempts (476, 6th), free throws made (352, 3rd), rebounds (965, 7th), and turnovers per game (11.7, 8th). The Tigers reached the 20-win plateau for the 10th consecutive season last year. That is twice as long as the next-best active streak in the MIAA (UCM, five). Fort Hays State tied the MIAA record for conference wins in a season after going 20-2 in conference play. Fort Hays State sits atop the preseason MIAA Coaches Poll and is tied for first in the Media Poll. It is the second time the Tigers have been ranked first in the preseason conference rankings and its the 10th year in a row the Tigers have been listed in the top five. The Tigers also did not have to look very far down the national rankings to find their name, with FHSU coming in fourth in the initial WBCA DII Coaches Poll and seventh in the preseason D2SIDA Media Poll. It is the highest preseason ranking ever for the Tigers in the coaches poll. FHSU is 110-31 all-time when ranked in the coaches poll, including a 10-1 record when ranked fourth. Head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1043">Tony Hobson</a>&nbsp;enters his 30th year as a collegiate head coach with a record of 695-211, just five wins shy of 700 career victories. He is 282-105 in his 13 seasons as head coach at Fort Hays State. The Tigers have never played either the Savage Storm or the Cougars before this season. FHSU has played 130 different schools in the history of the women's basketball program, going 81-49 when facing off with a school for the first time. Hobson is 16-3 in games against schools FHSU had never previously played. FHSU is 8-6 in St. Joseph, Mo. under Hobson, including a 4-0 mark in neutral-site contests. This is the third time the Tigers have opened the year in St. Joseph over the last six seasons (2016-17, 2019-20). The Tigers are 7-1 against GAC teams under Hobson and 16-12 all-time against current GAC institutions. FHSU is 17-2 against current NSIC programs under Hobson and 44-16 all-time. Fort Hays State has won its last 17 season openers, with the last loss coming in 2003. The Tigers have dominated non-conference play of late, winning their last 43 regular season, non-conference contests and 76 of the last 77. FHSU is 84-5 in regular season, non-conference games under Hobson. Scouting the Opposition Southeastern Oklahoma State -The Savage Storm are receiving votes in the preseason WBCA coaches poll, sitting in 39th place in the country. -SEOSU posted a 13-8 record a year ago, advancing to the GAC postseason championship game before falling to Southern Nazarene. -The Savage Storm return 10 players in addition to five true freshmen. -They return 72.4 percent of their scoring, including their top two scorers from a year ago and six of the top seven. -Kamryn Cantwell and Briley Moon are back after earning first team All-GAC honors last season. Cantwell led the team with 16.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game, while Moon added 15.8 points, 6.2 boards and 2.4 assists each night. Both players hit more than 40 percent of their shots from behind the arc. -As a team, the Savage storm averaged 66.2 points per game, hitting 43.5 percent from the floor and 37.8 percent from deep. They were outrebounded by an average of 3.4 rebounds per game. -Head coach Darin Grover is in his 17th year at SEOSU, accumulating a 248-193 record to date. Sioux Falls -Sioux Falls went 8-6 in 2020-21 after bowing out in the quarterfinals of the NSIC tournament against Minnesota Duluth. -The Cougars return 10 players and added 11 newcomers, including two transfers and nine freshmen. -USF returns 70.5 percent of its offensive production, including six of its top seven scorers from a year ago. -Anna Brecht is back after earning first team All-NSIC honors a year ago. She led the team with an average of 18.0 points per game while adding 5.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest. -Transfers include a grad transfer from Concordia-St. Paul in Danielle Schaub and sophomore Madison Birnbaum from Newman. -Sioux Falls averaged 71.6 points per game a year ago while grabbing 41.1 rebounds per game, an average of 4.2 more than its opponents per contest. -Head coach Travis Traphagen is in his 14th season with the Cougars. He carries a career record of 251-124 at USF. Eagle brings you the Redeem Designs Road to a Championship

HAYS – TMP-Marian senior Emilee Lane signed a National Letter of
Intent Thursday to play volleyball at Nebraska-Kearney.

Lane has been named to the All MCL volleyball teams each of
the last three seasons and was an All-State selection as both a sophomore and
junior. This year's All-State teams have not been announced.

She finished her senior season with 419 kills and helped lead TMP to a sub-state runner-up finish.

Natasha Dreher served as Lane's coach for a total of six years.

⚾ Salvador Perez earns fourth Louisville Silver Slugger Award

It is a commitment that stuck since the summer before Dylan Dreiling's freshman year at Hays High. The now-senior gave an oral commitment to Tennessee to play baseball for the Volunteers in the summer of 2018. Thursday at Hays High School, he made it official with ink to paper. Originally recruited as a pitcher, Dreiling will be at the plate and in the outfield when he reaches the diamond in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Volunteers were nationally ranked this past season and reached the College Baseball World Series. The left-handed pitcher and hitter for the Indians has started since his first game as a freshman. Playing for his grandfather Frank Leo during that 2019 season, Dreiling batted .323 in 65 at-bats, walking 15 times and striking out on just three occasions. He also clubbed four home runs, including a grand slam in the opening round of regional postseason play.

Like everybody, Dreiling lost his 2020 season to COVID-19 shutdown.

Under coach Dustin Dreher, Dreiling spent the 2021 season batting .430, recording 37 hits on 86 at-bats. He hit three more home runs, walked eight times and struck out just twice. On the mound Dreiling went 9-0 with a 0.50 ERA (the lowest in school history) while opponents hit just .180 against him. The nine wins tied a school record for pitching wins in a single season. He struck out 94 batters while walking 23. He was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year. 

Along with teammate Dalton Dale, Dreiling was named to the All-State 1st Team as well. Dominic Bainter was named to the Second Team.

The 2021 team finished 3rd at the 5A State Tournament.

preseason rankings for 2021-22. Several area teams as well as individual
wrestlers are ranked.

TOPEKA — In 2019, Greeley County High
 School suffered its worst season in years, finishing winless and 
struggling week in and week out to field a complete team.

At the time, the school was playing 
eight-man football, but dwindling interest in trying out for football 
forced a remarkable seven forfeits throughout a nine-game schedule. In 
the two games they were able to play, they lost 44-0 against Rawlins 
County and 68-20 against Cheylin.&nbsp;

After conversations about the future 
of the program, the school made the move to six-man football last year. 
This year the team finished 2-5, and while the team may not be winning a
 lot, the players are having fun again.

“At least the kids are getting to 
play there, right?” said Greeley County High School athletic director 
Greg Cook. “It keeps interest in fall activities. It allows the kids to 
still play football and get all the benefits of being part of a team.”

High school football participation 
has steadily declined over the past decade as concerns around head 
trauma and other injuries escalate. Add that to the declining population
 in rural cities and towns, and many schools across Kansas are facing 
similar challenges to Greeley County.

Six-man football first popped up in 
Kansas during the 1960s but did not gain widespread traction and 
eventually disappeared. In 2014, faced with very few options to keep 
their program afloat, Weskan became the first Kansas team to play 
six-man since 2003.

Since then, the six-man ranks have 
risen to 15 schools operating under the Six-man Football Association. 
The association culminates each year with the Wild West Bowl state 
championship game in Dodge City.

The participating schools have 
primarily been in the Northwest and Southwest parts of Kansas. Burrton, 
in central Kansas, is the furthest eastern school, but that could soon 
change.

In September, the Kansas State High 
School Activities Association officially sanctioned six-man football 
following a unanimous vote of their board of directors. According to the
 association, 26 teams will play six-man next fall.

Those schools’ total enrollment for 
ninth, 10th and 11th grade must range from 19 to 55 students, although 
some in that range have chosen to play eight-man football. In addition 
to an official schedule and playoffs, Cook said the association’s 
sanction will help smaller schools like his.

“The schools that are borderline that
 are hanging on to eight-man — if they should happen to lose some 
students or have some small classes — it’ll be easier for them to move 
down to six-man,” he said.

Altoona-Midway, Chase, Chetopa, 
Ingalls, Southern Coffey County, Centre, Peabody-Burns, Southern Cloud, 
Tescott, Waverly, Wetmore and Triplains-Brewster will all be part of the
 newly sanctioned division next year, the state high school athletics 
association announced. Many of the schools switching to the six-man 
division hail from the eastern side of the state.&nbsp;

Those teams have a combined 19 wins 
and 72 losses this fall. Chase and Chetopa took forfeits because of low 
participation, and Centre was unable to field an eight-man team and 
played some six-man games.

Peabody-Burns was exploring a six-man move this summer. Only Waverly had a winning record last season.

“The game of football is great for 
kids, it’s great for communities and it is safer than it’s ever been,” 
said Mark Lentz, assistant executive director for the state High School 
Activities Association.

A full high school schedule is nine football games. Last year, six-man squads averaged 6.2 games.

In states like Colorado, Texas and 
Nebraska, the six-man modifications to the standard 11-man rules have 
resulted in high-scoring games. This trend has held true in Kansas so 
far.

The games are heavy on offense and, 
like eight-man football, can be extremely high scoring, with some games 
eclipsing 200 combined points scored. Besides the score and shorter 
field (80 yards vs the normal 100 yards) six-man is unique to both 
eight-person and 11-person football.&nbsp;

However, the aim of the game is still the same, Lentz said.

“Football is football,” he said. “It 
just looks a little bit different when you have six players on a side 
versus 11 but it’s still all about blocking and tackling and the 
fundamentals that you learn from playing a team sport.”

One noticeable rule change is that to
 advance the ball forward on a run play, the ball must be exchanged 
between players at least once. As a result, the running back will 
oftentimes receive the snap and immediately toss the ball to the 
quarterback, giving them the choice to either run or pass the ball.

Rather than the typical 10 yards needed for a first down, six-man football requires teams to advance the ball 15 yards.

Scoring is also unique, with extra 
points worth two when kicked as opposed to one. Field goals are worth 
more as well — four points earned during a successful kick versus the 
typical three.

The other big rule change: Everyone 
on the field is eligible to receive the ball. That includes the center. 
Though three players must be on the line of scrimmage on many calls the 
center will be the lone lineman — and the defense will still have to 
wonder if he’s going out to receive a pass.

“It’s taken me four years to finally 
figure out some of the little nuances about the game of six-man,” said 
Jon Schnable, football head coach and athletic director for Rolla High 
School. “At first, I thought if you have a big-sized team, you can get 
away with a lot of things, but if you look at the six-man schools, their
 kids’ size isn’t a priority, it’s speed. If you’ve got some speed on 
your team, you can win a lot of ballgames.

While the number of players and 
various rules may differ, advocates of the six-man variety will take 
what they can get, especially when participation numbers continue to 
drop across the country.

According to data from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aspeninstitute.org/">Aspen Institute</a> and the <a target="_blank" href="https://nfhs.org/">National Federation of State High School Associations</a>,
 from 2008-19 to 2018-19 the total number of youths aged 6 to 18 playing
 tackle football fell by more than 620,000. Participation nationwide now
 sits at just over 1 million high school players.

Over that same decade attendance at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncaa.org/championships/statistics/ncaa-football-attendance">college</a> and professional football also declined.

However, there is optimism among some
 that the annual declines in participation appear to be leveling off for
 now. While COVID-19 made data for 2020 difficult to collect, in 2019 
high school football participation only dropped by 2,489 students.

Previous years saw declines of 23,311, 20,540 and 30,829 students playing football.

“These (2019) numbers suggest to us 
that parents are appreciative of the risk minimization efforts that have
 been put in place,” said Karissa Niehoff, director of the National 
Federation of State High School Associations. “Every state has enacted 
rules that limit the amount of contact before the season and during 
practice, and every state has established concussion protocols and 
laws.”

Kansas has also seen the drop in 
participation level off recently with football participation hovering in
 the high 14,000-student range since 2016. In 2020, however, the state 
high school activates association recorded the first notable decrease in
 participation since that year.

Still, other research shows <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0277953618307202">increasing parental concerns about concussion risks</a>. This raises concerns for future participation across the country and in Kansas.

For example, some have suggested implementing age-based restrictions on physical contact in the sport.

In a <a target="_blank" href="https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/143/5/e20182402?casa_token=1LUpwzsJF8YAAAAA%3AIoCBCMFs-5IuTjXhBPM5J-856x44gwgkAH0bpE87Wa07EiwZ-rBHOppsO-dK9xeibl-yl2YhsMif">2019 study of the favorability of an age cap</a>,
 several researchers wrote, “US parents are willing to accept age limits
 on tackling in youth football.” They added that the organizations 
responsible for shaping public discourse about the topic, like the 
American Academy of Pediatrics, “may find it useful to consider US 
parents’ attitudes regarding age limits on tackling, alongside research 
quantifying the risk of tackling, when they revisit this topic.”

As the first team to bring six-man football back to Kansas, Weskan has seen it evolve and grow over the years.

Brett Clow, athletic director and 
head coach of Weskan’s football team, said he expects six-man football’s
 growth to continue. Like any changes to a sport with deep roots in many
 communities across the state, six-man football has its doubters who 
believe only 11-man football to be “real football,” but Clow said with 
the sport under the pressure it is, six-man is an important alternative.

“When you look at… some of these 
small towns fighting to keep football, this is now another option,” he 
said. “If a school is thinking about it, I would only say how great it’s
 been for us and that it is worth at least giving it a shot.”

Clow also said he was excited to see 
the influx of new teams after the state association sanctioned the 
six-man games and hopes there could be as many as 40 such teams in the 
state one day.

The format, he said, can help schools
 that haven’t experienced much past success, like Natoma High School, 
which won the six-man state title this year after not having won a 
single playoff game for 47 years.

“It’s really cool for teams like that
 and schools like that to have success for the first time,” Clow said. 
“I think once people do see it and schools start participating in it, 
they’ll realize how much fun it is and that the kids really enjoy it.”

It is Schmidt's second trip to the national championships after competing with the rest of the Tigers in 2019, the last time the national race was held. This year's national championships are being held at The Abbey Course at Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, Fla. on Saturday, November 20. The men's 10-kilometer race is slated to begin at 9:45 a.m. (8:45 a.m. CT). Live video and results will be available via&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.com/">NCAA.com</a>. The Topeka, Kan. native earned his spot in the national championships after placing 12th out of 207 runners at the loaded Central Region Championships last weekend. The central region will send five teams and four individuals to the Tampa suburb, while the full field will consist of 34 teams and 27 individuals for approximately 265 runners. Schmidt was the top finisher for the Tigers at the 2019 championships when he finished 125th with a time of 31:49.5, helping Fort Hays State to a 29th-place finish as a team. The fifth-year senior has been an anchor in the Tiger lineup all season, finishing in the top 10 at each race in the regular season. He earned All-MIAA honors after placing sixth at the league championships and won the opening race of the year in Kearney. Fuller completed 17 passes for 223 yards with four touchdowns in Fort Hays State's 58-point win. With his second touchdown pass of the game, Fuller moved into the all-time lead at Fort Hays State for passing touchdowns. He now has 63 in his career, going past the former record of 60 set by Jacob Mezera in 2018. Fuller joins Grant Bruner (Defensive Athlete of the Week) and Jace Williams (Special Teams Athlete of the Week), both from Washburn, as the weekly honorees in the MIAA.&nbsp;&nbsp;
