SALINA – The Hoxie Indians boys wrestling team placed eight
in the top six, with four individual champions, as they claimed the 3-2-1A state
wrestling team title for the fourth straight year at the Tony’s Pizza Event
Center in Salina on Saturday.

The Indians Ian Giancola (120 pounds) and Carson Ochs (132
pounds) are now both two-time state champions after claiming individual titles
last season and again this year.

Duncan Bell (157 pounds) and Sam Watkins (190 pounds) claimed
their first individual state championship Saturday and both have now medaled in
multiple state tournaments. 

Kash Schiltz (3rd at 113 pounds) and Gavin
Schippers (3rd at 285) have also won multiple medals. And with his
third place finished at 165 pounds Easton Nickelson brought home his first
medal from the state tournament.

Hoxie finished with 260 team points, Norton was second with
101 and Sabetha third with 100.5.

Other area medal winners include Tate Blackwill of Quinter
who finished second at 106 pounds. He lost&nbsp; to Norton’s Kaleb Keiswetter in the
title match. 

Ellis’ Mason Younger became the first two-time state championship
in school history on Saturday. He earned a first-place finish at 144 pounds with
a 3-1 win over Dustin Loughrie from Haven.

Younger won the 126 pound weight class as a junior.

Hill City’s Aiden Amrein also repeated as state champion at
175 pounds. 

Amrein defended his state title, at 175 pounds, with a 6-3 win
over Gage Lee of Garden Plain. With the victory he became a four-time state
placer from the Ringnecks.

The Ringnecks had two other medal winners with Dayton
Stephen bringing home a third-place finish at 157 pounds and Alexander Hamel
was fifth at 113 pounds.

Plainville’s Mason Hogan was the lone medal winner for the
Cardinals. He earned a fifth-place finish at 285 pounds.

In the 4-1A girls championship it was Rossville rallying late
to beat the Oakley girls by just one-half point to claim the girls team
championship.

Oakley had five medal winners but all by one lost in their
final match of the tournament and that allowed Rossville to claim the title
with 82.5 team points. Oakley finished with 82 points and Chanute had 80. 

Area girls medal winners included Kaydawn Haag of Ellis who
finished runner-up at 140 pounds. 

Haag was attempting to repeat as champion but Goodland’s
Destiny Gonzalez, who finished second at 145 pounds last year, beat Haag in
this year’s championship match. 

Ellis’ Maleah Vine also earned at sixth place finish at 135
pounds. 

Stockton’s Carolina Northrup became a two-time state placer
when she defeated Kaeleigh Klein of Plainville for fifth and sixth.

Plainville’s Zoe Brown joined Klein in medaling for the
Cardinals, she finished fifth at 145 pounds.

Trego’s Adrian Wynn captured her first state finish, placing
fourth at 120 pounds.

🤼Hoxie boys win fourth straight state title; Oakley girls finish 2nd

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State fought an uphill battle all day, tied the game late, and got a defensive stop to force overtime on Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The No. 14/25 ranked Tigers came out victorious in the extra frame by two points as the Lions missed an attempt in low on a drive to potentially tie the game. FHSU picked up its first win in overtime this season by a score of 67-65, improving to 21-6 overall and 16-5 in the MIAA.

With the win, Fort Hays State locked up the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament with one regular season game to play. Northwest Missouri State claimed the conference regular season title outright on Saturday with a win over Missouri Western.

Just like Thursday night, the Tigers battled a hot shooting opponent and their own offensive woes in the first half. The Tigers at one point were down 18 points at the 8:16 mark of the first half (28-10) before using a 12-2 run to get the deficit back into single figures. A 3-point field goal by the Lions just before the first-half buzzer stretched their lead to 35-24 at halftime.

For the second half, also very similar to Thursday night, the Tigers used a big run to get back in the game, but had to do it a second time late to have a chance. This time, fortune was on the Tigers' side. The Tigers' first run was 11-0 between the 18:06 and 15:12 marks to get the MSSU lead down to just two. But moments later, the Lions went on an 11-0 burst and took their lead back out to 14 with 11:43 to play.

The Tigers would not go without a fight and they stormed back again with a 17-4 run to get the lead down to one with 3:22 to play. The Tigers kept chipping away and then pounced when the Lions left the door open hitting only one of two free-throw attempts with a minute remaining. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;would go on to knot the game at 63-63 on a 3-point field goal from the right wing. The Tigers were able to fight off multiple looks by the Lions in the closing seconds to force overtime.

The Tigers willed their way to victory by grinding out the extra period by a score of 4-2. Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;made the first bucket of overtime with about 3:30 to go and then MSSU hit a pair of free throws with three minutes remaining. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;would make the final bucket of the game with 1:20 remaining and the Tiger defense found three straight stops to gut out a win. The Tigers held the Lions to 0-of-6 shooting from the field in overtime to claim a huge win and sweep the season series between the teams.

Bjarni Jonsson&nbsp;was clutch for the Tigers in the second half. After the team shot just 2-of-13 beyond the 3-point line in the first half (both makes from Traejon Davis), Jonsson found his long-range shot in the second period. He hit a new career-high five 3-point field goals and went on to lead the Tigers in scoring with 17 points.

Hammeke finished with 13 and his only three made of the game was the shot that forced overtime. Hammeke passed the 1,500-point mark for his career in the win, now with 1,510. He is only the third player in program history to have at least 1,500 points and 400 assists, joining Raymond Lee and Mark Wilson. Hammeke led the team in assists for the game with six.

Shaun Riley&nbsp;was just a little shy of a double-double, finishing with eight points and a team-high nine rebounds. Davis and Kyle Grill&nbsp;each had eight points as well.

The Lions had four players score in double figures, led by Avery Taggart with 18. Vinson Sigmon, Jr. had 15, Parker Long had 13, and Darius Dawson with 10. Long was nearing a potential triple-double, adding 10 rebounds and seven assists.

Fort Hays State closes out the regular season next week at home, hosting Nebraska-Kearney for Senior Night on Friday (Mar. 1) at 7:30 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 Tigers rally to beat Missouri Southern in overtime

PARK CITY – Hays High’s Harley Zimmerman claimed his second
straight state title, capping off an undefeated senior season at 42-0, with a
5A state wrestling championship Saturday.

The Hays High girls were led by Lexi Burton who earned here
third state medal with a runner-up finish at Hartman Arena in Park City.

Zimmerman, in his fourth state tournament appearance, claimed
the state championship at 144 pounds. He won the state title at 132 pounds as a
junior. He was second at 132 pounds as a sophomore and fourth as a freshman at
126 pounds.

The Hays High senior opened the state tournament with back-to-back
falls over Chase Wilson of Spring Hill (1st period) and Ramiz Monaco
of Kapaun Mt. Carmel (3rd period).

In the semifinals, Zimmerman earned a 4-1 victory over
Emerson Tjaden of De Soto and then in the finals, Zimmerman got a 5-3 sudden
victory win over Kaden Allen of St. Thomas Aquinas claiming back-to-back state championships.

Zimmerman finished the season with a record of 42-0 and in
his four seasons at Hays High he recorded a career record of 146-15.

Hay High’s McCullough earned a fourth-place finish at 113
pounds and Jonathan Rigler placed sixth at 175 pounds.

McCullough bounced back from a loss in the quarterfinals on Thursday
to get to the third-place match, going 3-1 on the backside of the bracket, losing
in the third-place match to Kolby Quint of Arkansas City in tie breaker number one, 5-4.

McCullough finishes the year 35-10 and is a two-time state placer.
He finished sixth at 113 pounds as a junior.

After upsetting the number one ranked wrestler in the
quarterfinals Thursday at 175 pounds Jonathan Rigler earns a fifth-place finish.


Following the 2-0 start, he lost back-to-back matches before
dropping the fifth-place match, 17-2 to Zachary Wessley of Goddard in a rematch
of the quarterfinal match won by Rigler. 

Rigler finished his sophomore season with a record of 31-17.

The Indian boys finished 11th as a team with 63
points.

The Hays High girls had two medal winners and tied for 10th
as a team at the 5-6A state tournament in Park City.

Lexi Burton finishes her career as a three-time state placer
for the Indians earning a runner-up finish at 140 pounds as a senior.

Burton, who had previously finished fifth (135 pounds) and
sixth (at 143 pounds) at state, got all the way to the state championship match
but lost a 5-1 decision to Jayla Johnson of Kapaun Mt. Carmel. 

Tionna Napue became a two-time state placer this weekend
with a third-place finish at 120 pounds. 

The junior Napue went 4-0 on the backside of the bracket
after losing in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

She closed out the third place finished with a 5-3 win over
Taylie Heston from Topeka-Seaman. Napue finished 35-4 on the season.

5A state wrestling championship Saturday.The Hays High girls were led by Lexi Burton who earned here
third state medal with a runner-up finish at Hartman Arena in Park City.Zimmerman, in his fourth state tournament appearance, claimed
the state championship at 144 pounds. He won the state title at 132 pounds as a
junior. He was second at 132 pounds as a sophomore and fourth as a freshman at
126 pounds.The Hays High senior opened the state tournament with back-to-back
falls over Chase Wilson of Spring Hill (1st period) and Ramiz Monaco
of Kapaun Mt. Carmel (3rd period).In the semifinals, Zimmerman earned a 4-1 victory over
Emerson Tjaden of De Soto and then in the finals, Zimmerman got a 5-3 sudden
victory win over Kaden Allen of St. Thomas Aquinas claiming back-to-back state championships.Zimmerman finished the season with a record of 42-0 and in
his four seasons at Hays High he recorded a career record of 146-15.Hay High’s McCullough earned a fourth-place finish at 113
pounds and Jonathan Rigler placed sixth at 175 pounds.McCullough bounced back from a loss in the quarterfinals on Thursday
to get to the third-place match, going 3-1 on the backside of the bracket, losing
in the third-place match to Kolby Quint of Arkansas City in tie breaker number one, 5-4.McCullough finishes the year 35-10 and is a two-time state placer.
He finished sixth at 113 pounds as a junior.After upsetting the number one ranked wrestler in the
quarterfinals Thursday at 175 pounds Jonathan Rigler earns a fifth-place finish.
Following the 2-0 start, he lost back-to-back matches before

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team fought its way to a double-overtime win over Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon, winning 85-81. The Tigers (21-6, 15-6 MIAA) moved into third place in the MIAA standings with the win, one-half game behind the Lions (19-7, 15-5 MIAA).

Both teams were firing on all cylinders offensively out of the gate, with the teams combining to shoot just under 50 percent from the floor in the first quarter. The Lions led by as many as four early before Emma Ruddle&nbsp;tied things up at 10 with a traditional 3-point play.

The Canton, Kan. native and McPherson High School grad later poured in a 3-pointer to give the Tigers the lead before adding a layup on the next possession to score her 11th point of the game less than five minutes into the contest.

Missouri Southern scored the next six points to go back up by one, but a Brooke Loewe&nbsp;3-pointer gave FHSU a 21-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;dropped in back-to-back buckets early in the second quarter before knocking down a 3-pointer just two minutes later. Consecutive baskets from Jessie Sallach and Katie Wagner helped the Tigers push the lead as high as nine, 36-27, before the Lions scored seven in a row to close within one possession. Sydney Golladay ended the first half with a jumper from the left elbow to give the Tigers a 38-34 advantage.

Ellie Stearns&nbsp;opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer before Olivia Hollenbeck dropped in a layup, putting the home team back up by nine. Missouri Southern responded with an 8-0 run before eventually tying the score at 53 by the end of the frame.

The Lions then took their first lead since the first quarter early in the final frame before the Tigers scored the next six to go back up by four, 59-55. After a Hollenbeck basket gave the Tigers a 61-56 lead with 4:22 to go, Missouri Southern scored the next six points while FHSU missed seven-consecutive shots. The Tiger defense forced three turnovers during the stretch, preventing the Lions from pulling away.

Hollenbeck broke through with 29 seconds to go with a turnaround layup off a pass from Golladay, giving the Tigers a 63-62 lead. The Lions missed a layup as time was winding down but grabbed an offensive rebound before Hollenbeck committed her fifth foul of the game, sending Brandi Hudson to the free-throw line with a chance to take the lead with three seconds to go. MSSU missed the first before tying things up with the second free throw.

Golladay was able to create a decent look at the end of regulation, but her pull-up jumper from the left elbow bounced off the front rim to send things to overtime.

Playing in overtime for the first time this season, Fort Hays State took a five-point lead midway through the frame after two layups from Loewe and a 3-pointer from Sallach. Trailing by four with less than 30 seconds to go, MSSU scored on a stick-back layup to close within one possession before the Tigers committed a turnover to hand the ball back to the Lions. Hudson hit both her free throws after being fouled on a steal attempt, leveling the score at 71 with 12 seconds remaining.

Fort Hays State called a timeout to advance the ball and draw up the play, with Golladay again getting a decent look, but her baseline jumper again rimmed out to send things to a second overtime period.

The Tigers jumped in front again in the second extra period, including two big jumpers from Sallach to lead by four, 77-73. After FHSU struggled from the free-throw line over the first 45 minutes of action (9-of-21), the Tigers were able to seal the deal with free throws in the second overtime session. FHSU hit 10-of-12 from the stripe over the final five minutes, including two from Sallach to seal the win with five seconds left after the Lions had closed within one possession.

Despite playing limited minutes due to foul trouble, Hollenbeck led the Tigers with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Wagner added 13 points and four assists while playing in all 50 minutes.

Sallach scored nine of her 11 points in overtime while matching her season-high with nine rebounds. Ruddle scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting alongside three assists. Golladay distributed eight assists in the win, one off her career-best.

The Tigers scored a season-high 26 points in transition while outscoring the Lions in the paint, 38-30. Fort Hays State turned the ball over just 11 times despite playing 10 extra minutes, while FHSU scored 24 points off 16 Lion turnovers.

Fort Hays State hit 30-of-70 from the floor (42.9 percent), while Missouri Southern finished the game shooting 41.8 percent from the floor (28-of-67).

Fort Hays State will wrap up the regular season next Friday (March 1) when the Tigers host Nebraska-Kearney on Senior Night beginning at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams earned two All-MIAA honors, recorded five national-qualifying marks and sent six athletes through the prelim round and into the finals on day two of the MIAA Indoor Championships Saturday.

The heptathlon finished up this afternoon, with Ethan Salmans&nbsp;displaying remarkable versatility and endurance, finishing fifth overall with a total score of 4880 points. Salmans showcased his skills across a range of events, from the 60m sprint to the 1,000m run, demonstrating his all-around ability as a multi-event athlete. Notably, his earned him a provisional mark, indicating his potential to qualify for the NCAA Division II national championships in the heptathlon.

The preliminaries kicked off with a burst of speed as the Tigers raced towards their goals. Notably, Taylor Savolt&nbsp;and Maggie Remsberg&nbsp;secured spots in the women's 60m hurdles finals, with Savolt's time of 8.80 earning her fifth place and Remsberg's 9.29 seconds placed her at tenth with Savolt making the finals set for tomorrow (Feb. 25). Medina earned a spot in the finals while Aaron Mangan and Isaac Radke&nbsp;narrowly missed the cutoff, coming in ninth and 12th.

In the 5,000m races, Jaycee Vath&nbsp;and Regan Hodsden&nbsp;delivered a stunning one-two finish, with both athletes achieving NCAA Division II national qualifying marks and All-MIAA honors. Jaret Pfiizenmaier&nbsp;showcased his endurance on the men's side, claiming fourth place, almost securing an All-MIAA mark.

In the men's DMR, the quartet of Trevor Medina, Kaden Wren, Ethan Lang and Grant Bradley&nbsp;combined their talents to secure a commendable fourth place finish. Their synchronized effort and determination were evident as they navigated through the grueling 1,200m, 400m, 800m, and 1,600m legs of the relay. This time was good enough for a trip to the nationals. The women's DMR team comprising Faith Little, Kinley Brown, Hattie Lukert&nbsp;and Madison Sutterfield&nbsp;showcased their resilience and teamwork as they raced to a third-place finish with a time of 12:09.23.

The Tiger women are second with 37 points through six completed events while the men sit in seventh with 14 points through six events as well.The MIAA Championships will wrap up on Sunday (Feb. 25) beginning at noon, with track events starting at 1:30 p.m.

🏃‍♂️ Tigers record five provisional marks Saturday at MIAA Championships

&nbsp; TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State softball split its pair of games on Saturday at the Washburn Invitational, playing at the Lake Shawnee Softball Complex. The Tigers ran away with their first game of the day, 10-0 in run-rule fashion over Wayne State (Neb.), but unfortunately was on the short end of a 1-0 pitcher's duel against Sioux Falls. The Tigers moved to 9-3 overall on the season.

Fort Hays State 10, Wayne State (Neb.) 0 (5 inn.) Fort Hays State jumped all over Wayne State in the first inning of the first contest of the day. The Tigers had seven hits in the opening inning, highlighted by a pair of home runs. Peyton Shepard and Sarah Tiffany&nbsp;opened the inning with singles and Alondra Dominguez&nbsp;walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Loren Beggs&nbsp;launched the second grand slam of her career to instantly put the Tigers up 4-0. She is now tied for the school record for most grand slams in a career, shared by three others including head coach Adrian Pilkington and teammate Sarah Tiffany.

The Tigers continued to pour the offense on as Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson&nbsp;singled and then Audrey Gillespie&nbsp;launched a two-run home run in her first collegiate at bat. She was the first Tiger to launch a homer in her first collegiate at bat since Sarah Tiffany&nbsp;did so during the 2021 season. The Tigers led 6-0 after one inning.

Fort Hays State tacked on another pair of runs in the second inning to make it 8-0. Dominguez opened the inning with a single and then Beggs doubled to put runners at second and third. Ramirez-Johnson drove home Dominguez with a sacrifice fly and then Carly Stucke&nbsp;followed with a double to plate Beggs

.The Tigers picked up a pair of runs in the fourth to pad their run-rule advantage. Dominguez opened another inning with a single to go 2-for-2 in the game and then Beggs singled to complete a 3-for-3 game at the plate. Ramirez-Johnson knocked in a run and then Regan Curry&nbsp;drew a bases loaded walk to make it 10-0. Tiger pitching made the run-rule advantage hold up by holding the Wildcats scoreless.

Morgan Schmidt&nbsp;started the game and threw two hitless innings.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/emma-montoya/7745">Emma Montoya</a>&nbsp;relieved for the final three innings, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out two. One of her strikeouts ended the game.

Sioux Falls 1, Fort Hays State 0 Fort Hays State had run-scoring opportunities in both the first and sixth innings, but could not push a run across and saw Sioux Falls win in walk-off fashion with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. The Tigers had runners at second and third in the first with one out and hit into a double play, then had the bases loaded in the sixth with two outs and could not find the breakthrough hit. Sarah Tiffany&nbsp;and Peyton Shepard&nbsp;each had two hits in the contest.

Savanah Egger&nbsp;was cruising along with a no-hit bid going through 4.1 innings, but USF notched its first hit in the fifth. A leadoff single allowed in the seventh turned into the winning run for USF. With one out, the Cougars got their game-winning RBI single with one out. Egger allowed only three hits in the game, but walked four. She took her first loss of the season, despite a solid complete-game effort, now 5-1 overall.

Maddi Duncan claimed the complete-game shutout win for USF, allowing five hits and a walk with two strikeouts. She moved to 6-2 on the season.

Fort Hays State wraps up its weekend in Topeka on Sunday with games against Winona State and St. Cloud State. FHSU plays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. once again at the Lake Shawnee complex.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team came up short Saturday afternoon against No. 14 Missouri Southern, losing 23-5. The Tigers are now 10-4 on the year and 0-2 in MIAA play, while the Lions improve to 14-2 overall and 2-0 in conference action.

The Tigers were playing from behind from the jump with MSSU scoring three runs in the top of the first. FHSU grabbed one of those runs back right away when Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;crushed his fourth home run of the season sailing over the fence in left center.

A double play helped Tiger starter Dylan Rinker&nbsp;face the minimum in the second inning before a bases-loaded single from Kreutzer helped the Tigers close within 3-2 in the bottom of the inning. Missouri Southern then proceeded to score 20 runs over the next five innings to take control.

The Tigers pushed across three runs in the sixth when Garrett Wellbrock&nbsp;opened a one-out rally with a pinch-hit single in his FHSU debut. Kreutzer followed with a single before Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;drove in a pair with a double into the gap in right center. Kyle Morrell&nbsp;followed with a double of his own, driving in another run.

Kreutzer finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, with Morrell adding two hits. Rinker (1-1) struck out one batter in 3.0 innings of work, allowing five runs on five hits. Will Isaly&nbsp;struck out a pair in one scoreless inning of relief.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Arthur Kaluma had a career-high 28 points and 10 rebounds as Kansas State beat No. 25 BYU 84-74 on Saturday.

Kaluma was one of five players to score in double-figure for Kansas State (15-11, 5-8 Big 12), which had lost seven of its last eight games. Tylor Perry scored 16 points, David N'Guessan and Cam Carter each had 12, and Will McNair 11.

Jaxson Robinson scored 15 points to lead BYU (19-7, 7-6), which has gone 3-3 in its last six games. Noah Waterman and Spencer Johnson each scored 12 points, and Foussey Traore added 10.

The Wildcats started the second half with a run to retake a double-digit lead. They built a 61-47 advantage with 12:47 left in the game and extended their lead to as many as 16 points before BYU tried to rally late.

Kansas State scored the first eight points of the game and led 12-2 with 16:44 left in the first half. Kansas State extended its lead to 16-4 before BYU used a 10-0 run to close the gap.

The Cougars managed to tie the game at 28 with 6:35 left in the half, but never took a lead. The Wildcats led 42-38 at the break, helped by Kaluma's 16 points and six rebounds. Perry added 10 points.

BYU was slowed by 40.8% (29 for 71) shooting overall, including 20% (6 for 30) from 3-point distance.
