In 1971 Hays High junior, Greg Nichols had an incredible long jump of 23 feet, 11 inches, setting the school record.

This year Hays High senior, Keamonie Archie, broke the school's long-jump record that had stood for 52 years, with a jump of 24 feet 7.5 inches. 

Thursday at the regional track meet the two met.

Nichols&nbsp;traveled to Maize from Ellsworth to shake Archie's hand and watch him compete for a chance to go to the state track meet.

Archie earned a trip to the state track meet in multiple events, including long jump.

After some digging through the yearbook archives, a rather blurry image of&nbsp;Nichols jumping was found.

His speed was clearly too quick for the camera.

Nichols&nbsp;is also the former teammate of HHS javelin coach, Fred Joy, HHS Class of 1972.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HHS alum meets student who broke his 52-year-old long-jump record

MAIZE, Kan. – The Hays High boys track and field team won
four events and were regional champs at Thursday’s 5A Regional meet hosted by Maize
South. The Indians scored 119 points which was 17 more than second place Maize.
The HHS girls finished seventh with 51 points. Great Bend won the team title
with 118 points, 46 ahead of Hutchinson.

Keamonie Archie won the long jump and was on the first place
4x100 meter relay team along with Deondre Broom, Malik Bah and Chason
VenDerWege who broke the school record again with a time of 42.07. Kyreese
Groen won the the triple jump and Wyatt Waddell finished first in the javelin.

The Indians qualified 10 individuals in 12 events plus the
4x100, 4x400 relays. Chason VanDerWege is qualified in three events. In
addition to being a member of the winning 4x400 relay team, he finished second
in the high jump and second in the triple jump.

HHS qualified three in the triple jump and three in the javelin.

The Hays girls finished in seventh place. They qualified six individuals
in six events plus the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

Aralen Maupin and Morgan Geerdes qualified in three events. Maupin
finished third in the 400 meters and was on the fourth place 4x400 and 4x800
meter relay teams. Geerdes placed third in the triple jump and was on the 4x100
and 4x400 relay teams.

May 26-27 at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.

NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State track and field teams earned 11 USTFCCCA Outdoor All-Central Region honors, announced Wednesday by the coaches association. Nine different Tigers received the distinction during the 2023 outdoor season, with two FHSU student-athletes receiving a pair of recognitions. 👟 FHSU earns 11 All-Region honors

The Hays High Athletic Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the 2023 class of inductees. Seven individuals and a combination of four teams make up the list.

The HHS Hall of Fame Banquet will be held Saturday, August 12th at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall. A social hour will begin at 5:00. The banquet begins at 6:00 with supper at 6:15. Induction begins after supper. Dress for the event is business casual.

⚾ Larks Baseball Camps begin June 6

ELLIS – After scoring a total of 29 runs in the first two
games of the 2-1A Ellis Regional on Tuesday the TMP-Marian softball team was
held to just two runs Wednesday in the regional finals, as they see their season come to
an end with a 3-2 loss to Ell-Saline.

Hannah Garcia got the Monarchs offense started in the top of
the first when she doubled to lead off the game and came in to score on a Jaci
VonLintel ground out, putting TMP up 1-0.

Ell-Saline answered back with run scoring ground out
and a RBI single taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

The Cardinals added a single run in the bottom of the third
inning for a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning TMP cut the deficit to just
one, when Brooke Koenigsman scored on a passed ball making it 3-2.

The Monarchs threatened in the fifth but had a runner thrown
out at home trying to tie the game. And that would be their only chance coming
down the stretch as they come up short, falling 3-2.

Garcia and Koenigsman both collected a pair of hits in the
game for TMP.

Madison Augustine allowed just three runs, on five hits, with
five strikeouts and four walks in six innings.

Opposing pitcher Gabby Norris held TMP to just two runs on
six hits with seven strikeouts in the complete game victory.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino hit a tiebreaking two-run homer off Yu Darvish and the Kansas City Royals beat the struggling San Diego Padres 4-3 Wednesday to take two of three in the series.

Pasquantino's homer to right field, his eighth, and Maikel Garcia's RBI double gave the Royals a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning.

Many in the crowd of 32,416 booed the Padres after Scott Barlow retired the side in the ninth for his sixth save. San Diego’s star-studded lineup went 2 for 9 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 overall as the Padres lost for the ninth time in 11 games.

The Padres, closer to last in the NL West than they are first, were without slugger Manny Machado for a second straight day after he was hit by a pitch on the left hand in Monday night’s 4-0 win.

San Diego's offensive woes continued despite Kansas City needing a bullpen day. The Padres scored twice in the sixth to pull to 4-3, but Fernando Tatis Jr., moved down to third in the lineup, popped out weakly with the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Padres loaded the bases with one out in the seventh against Aroldis Chapman, but Trent Grisham struck out for the fourth straight time and then a wild pitch by Chapman caromed off the backstop right back to catcher Salvador Perez, who easily tagged out Juan Soto trying to score, ending the inning.

Royals opener Carlos Hernández held the Padres to two hits in two scoreless innings while striking out four.

The Padres’ recurring woes with runners in scoring position intensified against Mike Mayers, who came on to start the third and made his Royals debut after having his contract selected from Triple-A Omaha. Tatis came up with runners on first and second with one out in the third and grounded into a double play.

Mayers got out of a huge jam in the fourth when he loaded the bases with one out, on a single and consecutive walks, before striking out Grisham and Austin Nola to elicit boos from the crowd.

Jake Cronenworth homered to right in the fifth, his fourth, to tie the game at 1 before the Padres scored two more in the sixth on a bases-loaded balk against Jose Cuas and Xander Bogaerts' RBI infield single. The Padres loaded the bases again but Tatis popped up to end the inning.

MJ Melendez hit an RBI double for the Royals in the fourth.

Josh Taylor (1-1) got two outs for the win.

Darvish (2-3) allowed four runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Royals: Transferred LHP Ryan Yarbrough (skull fractures) to the 60-day injured list. Placed LHP Amir Garrett on the family medical emergency list.

Royals: RHP Zack Greinke (1-4, 5.01 ERA) is scheduled to start Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at the Chicago White Sox, who will counter with RHP Michael Kopech (1-4, 5.74).

Padres: LHP Blake Snell (1-5, 4.61) is set to start Friday night in the opener of a weekend series against the Boston Red Sox, who will go with LHP James Paxton (0-0, 3.60).

GODDARD, Kan. - Hays High opened postseason play with Western Athletic Conference opponent Great Bend on Wednesday at Goddard Eisenhower High School. The Indians had beaten the Panthers in their three regular season meetings buy couldn't overcome five errors and lost&nbsp; 10-5 ending the Indians' season.

Great Bend scored a run in the top of the first, capitalizing on the Indians' first two errors. 

Hays answered by scoring three in the bottom of the inning. Lakyn Zimmerman gave the Indians a lead with a two run double and Morgen Berry knocked in a third run in the inning.

Hays would not score again until the seventh.

Great Bend used another Indian error and bases loaded walk to score four runs and take the lead for good in the second inning at 5-3.

The Panthers would add runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh inning to build a 10-3 lead. Hays scored two in the bottom of the seventh.

Hays finishes the year at 15-6. Great Bend lost 6-2 to host Goddard-Eisenhower in the regional final and finished their season 11-11.

Fort Hays State signee Telexa Weeter has been named Miss Kansas Basketball by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association.

The Goodland senior helped lead the Cowgirls to back-to-back 3A state titles, going 26-0 this past season.

Weeter was named the Sports in Kansas 3A Player of the Year and to the Kansas State High School Activities Association Top-15.&nbsp;She was a 4-time All-Great West Activities Conference selection as well as the league's MVP.

Weeter is Goodland High School's all-time leading scorer with 1,638 career points and ranks in the top 10 in career rebounds (550) and steals (221) in 97 career games.

Blue Valley Northwest's Grant Stubblefield was named the KBCA's Mr. Kansas Basketball.

Both will be playing in the KBCA All-Star Game on June 24th at Mabee Arena on the campus of Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a two-run double in Kansas City's five-run second, Brady Singer pitched six solid innings and the Royals beat the San Diego Padres 5-4 on Tuesday night to snap a four-game losing streak.

The Royals jumped on starter Seth Lugo (3-3) in the second, with Bobby Witt Jr., Nate Eaton and Matt Duffy also driving in runs. Lugo gave up five runs on four hits in his two innings. The Padres have lost eight of 10.

“That was really good for us tonight. That is a great win, you know, against a team like the Padres. They are a really good team,” Perez said. “We scored five runs, and we got the game.”

Singer (3-4) lasted six innings, giving up seven hits and four runs, two of which were earned. Scott Barlow got his fifth save with a scoreless ninth.

"The fastball had really good late movement on it. I was able to move that around the zone. The slider helped me a lot tonight," Singer said. “I think I attacked the zone pretty well tonight.”

San Diego had a defensive highlight in the seventh when Fernando Tatis Jr. threw-out Vinnie Pasquantino trying to go from first to third on a single. After the play Tatis acted like he was putting a pistol back in a holster.

“I wasn't a big fan,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said of the attempt by Pasquantino to take third base. “We know he (Tatis) is super talented in every aspect of the game and throwing is certainly nothing he is lacking.”

The Padres scored two unearned runs in the fifth after consecutive errors by Kansas City’s MJ Melendez and Matt Duffy.

“Those things are going to happen. You just have to make pitches and pick them up,” Singer said of the errors. “That is just part of baseball. ... You have got to be able to overcome that.”

Kansas City reliever Ardolis Chapman pitched the seventh and threw a 104-mph fastball to Jake Cronenworth, which ties the fastest pitch of the 2023 season.

“That's amazing,” Perez said of Champan's feat.

San Diego continues to struggle offensively and had two runners picked off first base in the game.

“It's just a little bit the way we've been playing,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said of his team's losing skid. “It's just not in sync all the way around. You don't expect base-running to cost you."

Royals RHP Max Castillo was optioned to Triple-A Omaha, and RHP Jackson Kowar was called up from Omaha. Kowar had a 7.84 ERA over 20-2/3 innings coming out of the Omaha bullpen this season.

A day after Padres 3B Manny Machado was hit by a pitch on the left hand, he was out of the starting lineup Tuesday. Machado is experiencing soreness and swelling, but X-rays came back negative. It seems likely the Padres will sit Machado as a precaution on Wednesday for the series finale ahead of an off-day Thursday.

Padres RHP Yu Darvis (2-2, 3.16) gets the start to close the three-game series.

⚾ 5-run first carries Royals past Padres

ELLIS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs softball team advanced to
the 2-1A Ellis regional finals Tuesday with a big win over Republic County and then
they rallied to knock off the host Ellis in the semifinals.

Game 2, Regional semifinals: TMP 14, Ellis 13 The Monarchs rallied twice, the final time from down six, on
their way to a 14-13 win over the Ellis Railroaders in the final game of the
day in Ellis.

Ellis broke onto the scoreboard first, scoring four runs in
the first inning.

Kaydawn Haag gave Ellis an early 2-0 lead, she hit her fourth
home run in three games against TMP in the first inning. Ellis pushed two more
runs across the plate in the inning for a 4-0 lead.

Haag kept the Monarchs bats at bay for three innings before TMP
broke through in the top of the fourth, scoring on the first of two Jaci VonLintel
triples. Two hitters later Karli Komarek drove in VonLintel with her first of
four RBI base hits in the contest, making it 4-2.

Trailing 4-2 the Monarchs took the lead in the top of the
fifth inning scoring three times.

Brooke Koenigsman doubled home the first run of the inning.
Addison Watson scored Koenigsman on an infield single and then Komarek doubled
Watson home putting TMP up 5-4.

The Monarchs lead was short-lived though as Hannah Schiel
hit a grand slam in the bottom of the inning putting Ellis up 8-5. They tacked
on three more in the inning and led 11-5 through five innings.

In the top of the sixth inning TMP sent 12 hitters to the
plate, scoring seven runs and taking a 12-11 lead.

The inning started when Sophie Allen reached on an error, she
came around to score on three straight wild pitches.

Madison Augustine, who walked, came in to score on an error
making it 11-7 Ellis.

Then with two on, VonLintel connected on her second RBI
triple making it 11-9 Ellis.

Two batter later Komarek produced another RBI double pulling
TMP within one at 11-10.

Nicole Schumacher followed with a double of her own, scoring
Komarek, tying the game at 11.

Allen then gave the Monarchs the lead in the next at bat
with an RBI single, making it 12-11 TMP.

The Monarchs added a pair of insurance runs in the top of
the seventh on a Komarek double and they also scored on an error for a 14-11
lead.

In the bottom of the inning Ellis scored on an error and a
groundout but a flyout to left ended the game with the tying run at third as
TMP clinched the 14-13 victory.

Madison Augustine earned the win, she allowed 13 runs, 10 earned,
on 14 hits with three walks and three strikeouts in a complete game victory.

Komarek finished with a career-best four hits and four RBI’s
with three doubles. VonLintel drove in three with a pair of triples and
Koenigsman collected four hits for the second time this season.

Game 1, Regional quarterfinals: TMP 15, Republic Co. 5
(5innings) The Monarchs opened the first game of the day scoring in every
inning on their way to a 15-5 run-rule victory over the Republic County
Buffaloes.

TMP jumped out to a 2-0 lead scoring on a VonLintel
sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout from Adison Watson in the bottom of the
first.

The Buffaloes tied the game with two runs in the top of the
second.

With the game tied at two the Monarchs blew the game open
with a five-run second.

Hannah Garcia got the scoring started in the inning with an
RBI single. Brooke Koenigsman added an RBI single of her own that scored two
runs for a 5-2 TMP lead.

TMP added two more on an error for a 7-2 lead.

The Monarchs scored four more times in each the third and
fourth innings on their way to the 15-5 victory.

Koenigsman and VonLintel each drove in four runs. VonLintel
was three-for-three at the plate.

Augustine earned the win for TMP. She allowed five runs,
just two earned with five strike outs and two walks in five innings.

TMP improves to 15-7 and will take on Ell-Saline in the regional
final Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Ellis.

Ell-Saline beat Little River 4-3 in their first regional
game and followed that with an 11-1 win over Bennington. Ell-Saline is 17-3.

🥎 High scoring offense carries Monarchs to regional finals

INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State track and field teams will send 10 individuals to Pueblo, Colo. for the 2023 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships next week. Those 10 student-athletes, including five men and five women, will be competing in 14 events, eight on the women's side and six on the men's side. Colorado State-Pueblo will host the 2023 outdoor championships May 25-27 at the ThunderBowl. The Tigers will have no less than three student-athletes competing each day, including two in multi-events, one in a field event final and four in running prelims on Thursday, two in multi-events and four in running prelims on Friday and three in field event finals and up to eight in the finals on the track on Saturday. Rossi is competing at nationals for the fifth time in her career overall and the third time outdoors. She has qualified to compete in the heptathlon each of the last three years and is competing in both hurdles events for the second year in a row. She is a seven-time All-American, including a second-place finish in the 400m hurdles last season. Holman is also competing in her fifth national championships, earning seven All-American honors at the previous four national meets. This is the third year in a row the Junction City, Kan. native has qualified for both the 100m dash and 200m dash outdoors. Landrum is making his seventh trip to the NCAA Championship, including four outdoor national meets and three indoor. He's earned three All-American honors in the past. This is his first time competing in the 100m dash at the national level and the third time he has qualified in the 200m dash (2x outdoor, 1x indoor). The Wichita, Kan. native set the school record in the 100m dash this season, running in 10.23. Churchman is headed to his fifth-consecutive national meet dating back to the 2021 outdoor meet. He's been on the national podium in the multi-events at each of the last three competitions, finishing fifth in the decathlon outdoors last season and seventh at each of the last two indoor heptathlons. He has four total All-American trophies, including one in the 4x400m relay. Berens is headed to the national meet in the javelin throw for the third year in a row. She earned All-American status each of the last two years, finishing fourth last year and 11th in 2021. Brown is also competing at nationals for the third year in a row.  </figure>FHSU AthleticsINDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State track and field teams will send 10 individuals to Pueblo, Colo. for the 2023 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships next week. Those 10 student-athletes, including five men and five women, will be competing in 14 events, eight on the women's side and six on the men's side. Colorado State-Pueblo will host the 2023 outdoor championships May 25-27 at the ThunderBowl. The Tigers will have no less than three student-athletes competing each day, including two in multi-events, one in a field event final and four in running prelims on Thursday, two in multi-events and four in running prelims on Friday and three in field event finals and up to eight in the finals on the track on Saturday. HAYS - The Hays High girls' soccer team has advanced to their 5A regional title game after a 6-1 win over Hutchinson Tuesday at Hays High School.

All six of the Indians goals came in the first half. Dani Willeford recorded a hat trick a and had two assits. Arely Maldonado added two goals. Annie Humphrey also assisted on two goals.

Willeford got the Indians on the board early, scoring off a pass from Humphrey in the first minute. Kinslee Newell scored a minute later on a pass from Katie Dinkel. Maldonado made it a 3-0 lead with a goal in the ninth minute on an assist from Willeford who added back-to-back goals in the 23rd and 28th minute. Maldonado closed out the scoring with an assist from Willeford in the 32nd minute.

Hutchinson scored their lone goal in the 56th minute.

The Indians (13-4) will play Andover Central in the reginal final Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Andover. The Jaguars blanked Goddard 3-0 Tuesday.

WICHITA - Hays High's season came to a close in the opening round of Regional play at Westurban in Wichita Tuesday. The Indians fell to Great Bend 3-1.

The Panthers plated two runs in the second inning on just one hit but took advantage of four walks. 

Hays got their only run in the top of the fourth inning. Greg Hughes led the inning off with a double. Carter Graham drove in courtesy runner Johnathan Cano to cut the lead down to 2-1.

Great Bend got the run back in the bottom of the same inning for the final margin.

Greg Hughes took the loss for Hays, pitching six innings allowing three runs. He struck out three, walked five and allowed three hits. Carson Umphries notched the win for Great Bend. He allowed one run on four hits, striking out three and hitting one batter.

The Indians' season ends at 11-10. Great Bend moves to the Regional Championship at 12-9.

Zach Berg and Ed Scott&nbsp;of Fort Hays State Baseball were named to the College Sports Communicators All-District Team for 2023, announced on Tuesday. College Sports Communicators (CSC) is the new name for College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), changed prior to the start of the 2022-23 academic year. This award honors a combination of academic and athletic accomplishments of the individuals selected. Berg completed his degree in Health and Human Performance (Sport and Exercise Therapy), graduating with a 3.73 GPA. He made 14 appearances on the mound as a senior, including nine starts and one complete game. The Parker, Colo. native struck out a career-high 40 batters this season, including seven in one start against Missouri Southern. He finished his Tiger career with 37 appearances, 160.1 innings pitched and 111 strikeouts over four seasons at FHSU. Scott completed his studies with a GPA of 3.90 while double-majoring in Technology Studies (Engineering Design) and Management. He was one of two players in the lineup to start all 50 games for the Tigers, with the senior patrolling right field in each contest this season. Wrapping up his third season at Fort Hays State, Scott led the Tigers with an on-base percentage of .474. He also led the squad in runs (54), doubles (16), walks (35), hit-by-pitches (10) and stolen bases (11) while adding nine home runs and three triples. He ranks in the top 10 in the MIAA in several categories, including on-base percentage, runs, doubles, triples and walks. An MIAA honorable mention pick, the Manhattan, Kan. native tallied five outfield assists on the year and totaled 95 putouts. As All-District selections, both will now be considered for Academic All-America honors voted on by Sports Information/Athletic Communication professionals nationwide in NCAA Division II.&nbsp;&nbsp;
