🏀 Tuesday's Sub-State results

HAYS – The TMP boys used a 9-0 run to erase a fourth quarter
deficit on their way to a 60-53 win over the Hoxie Indians Tuesday night at Al
Billinger Fieldhouse to advance to the sub-state semifinals of the 2A Oakley
sub-state.

The matchup was a game of runs that saw the momentum swing
back and forth until TMP took control in the final minutes of the fourth
quarter.

The Monarchs (10-12, 7-3 MCL) opened the game on a 7-3 run,
but Hoxie outscored TMP 9-2 over the final two minutes and 45 seconds of the
first quarter taking a 12-9 lead into the second period. 

Hoxie (8-12, 5-5 MCL) scored four straight points to open
the second quarter and built their largest lead of the first-half at 16-9 with
just over six minutes to play in the second quarter.

TMP answered with a 10-3 run that included a pair of Carson
Liles three-pointers, tying the game at 19. 

Then down 21-19 Caden Dinkel collected an offensive rebound
and scored on the putback as time expired tying the game at 21 at halftime.

TMP opened the second half leading by five at 26-21 but
Hoxie was able to outscore the Monarchs 15-8 over a more than four-minute
stretch in the third quarter taking a 36-34 lead with two and a half minutes
left in the third.

The Monarchs regained the lead at 40-36 at the end of the
third quarter when Ty Schmeidler capped off a 6-0 run with a steal and layup
for a three-point play.

In the fourth quarter a Kane Epp layup with 5:30 left in the
game put Hoxie on top 44-43 but it was a short-lived lead and the Indians final
lead of the night.

TMP’s Ian Nehls answered on the next possession with the
first of his back-to-back field goals and then connected on a three pointer as
the sophomore scored seven straight and Ari Patel capped off the 9-0 with a bucket
in the paint putting TMP up 52-44. 

Patel scored five of his eight points in the fourth quarter.

The Monarchs never trailed the rest of the way as their pick
up the 60-53 victory.

Ty Schmeidler led TMP with 13 points. Carson Liles matched his
career-high of 10 points for a second straight game and Jacob Seib scored a career-high
eight points.

Hoxie was led by the 18 points of Kane Epp.

TMP will take on the top-seed Hill City Friday in the
sub-state semifinals after the Ringnecks got past Trego 70-62.

The other side of the bracket saw No. 3 seed Smith Center
defeat Oakley 62-41 and the second-seed Plainville beat Ellis 60-46.

🏀 TMP boys advance to sub-state semis with win over Hoxie

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Dallin Hall and Jaxson Robinson scored 18 points apiece as BYU rallied from a 12-point deficit to beat seventh-ranked Kansas 76-68 on Tuesday night, ending the Jayhawks' 19-game home winning streak.

The Cougars (20-8, 8-7 Big 12) took a 66-63 lead when Noah Waterman drained a 3-pointer with 2:43 left. Hunter Dickinson answered with a 3 for Kansas, but Robinson hit two free throws and Hall drained another 3, sending BYU to a win in its first trip to storied Allen Fieldhouse since December 1971.

Dickinson had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Jayhawks (21-7, 9-6), who were just 3 of 15 from 3-point range and 19 for 31 at the foul line. Dajuan Harris Jr. added 12 points, KJ Adams Jr. scored 11 and Johnny Furphy finished with 10.

BYU won despite heavy foul trouble in part by going 13 of 34 from behind the 3-point arc.

Already playing without Kevin McCullar Jr., who missed his fifth game with a bone bruise on his knee, the Jayhawks had a scare when Nick Timberlake landed hard after going up for a rebound. The thud echoed through Allen Fieldhouse, and Timberlake spent a couple of minutes in the locker room before eventually returning to the game.

Foul trouble set in for BYU in the second half. Hall picked up his fourth with 17:39 to go, and Trevin Knell got his fourth — after a double-technical with Dickinson — just minutes later. But the Jayhawks were unable to take advantage, not only struggling at the foul line but going more than eight minutes without a field goal.

BYU had another technical foul called on its bench with 7:50 left — and Harris made both of those free throws.

That's when the Cougars suddenly began to rain 3-pointers, wiping away a 56-50 deficit and taking their first lead at 59-58 on two free throws by Hall with 4:50 to play. Hall added two 3s of his own over the next few minutes, including one from the top of the key, which gave the Big 12 newcomers a 71-66 lead with 1:31 remaining.

The Cougars were able to hold on the rest of the way for another signature win in their first season in the Big 12.

BYU returns home to play TCU on Saturday night.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State track and field teams will send nine student-athletes to compete in eight events at the 2024 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, announced Tuesday (Feb. 27) by the NCAA office. This year's indoor meet is being held March 7-9 in Pittsburg, Kan.&nbsp;A total of 540 participants, 270 men and 270 women, will compete in the championships with 16 events.

Seven Tigers will represent the men's team in the distance medley relay, pole vault, heptathlon, high jump, 400m dash, and 800m dash with two student-athletes representing the women's team in the pentathlon and pole vault.

Hayden Albright&nbsp;qualified individually in the 400m dash thanks to his school-record time of 47.47, tenth-best in Division II this year. Albright has two outdoor All-American trophies and one indoor All-American for finishing seventh in last year's 400m dash. Ethan Lang&nbsp;senior from Hays, has two All-American honors in his career as he looks to improve on his historic senior season. Lang has the sixth best 800m time in the county, clocking in at 1:49.40, fast enough for a school record in the 800m. Both Albright and Lang will compete in the distance medley relay (DMR) team along with Trevor Medina and Grant Bradley. Fort Hays State's DMR time of 9:43.55 ranks seventh in Division II and breaking yet another school record.

Jacob Clark&nbsp;returns to the national meet in the pole vault thanks to a top clearance of 16-8.75 this season, 11th best nationally. Clark earned All-American honors indoors two years in a row as he looks to add another All-American under his belt. Annabeth Baalmann, the sophomore pole vaulter, will look for her first All-American honors in Pittsburgh. Baalmann broke the women's program pole vault record twice this season with a clearance of 13-0.75 earlier this season.

Nolan Churchman, two time indoor All-American, will compete in the heptathlon. The junior ranks eighth in the country this season with a top point total of 5,326. Taylor Savolt, senior multi-athlete, will represent the Tigers in the pentathlon. Her point total of 3769 she achieved this past weekend puts her 14th in the country.

Dayton Williams, high jumper from Gardner, Kan., will compete in the high jump. He achieved a jump of 6-11.5 earlier this season and ranks second in program history with the height jumped. Williams is looking for his first All-American honor in his career.

The two teams have combined for 50 national qualifying marks this season, including 32 from the men's team and 18 from the women's squad. Seven school records have been broken to date this year, including four men's marks and three women's records. The Tiger men rank 19th in the latest USTFCCCA MIAA rankings posted today while the women were ranked sixth in the MIAA before the season started. HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Athletics would like to remind all season ticket holders and fans the final home games of the regular season vs. Nebraska-Kearney will be this Friday night at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The games were originally scheduled for Saturday, but moved up one day. It will be Senior Night at Gross Memorial Coliseum for both the women's and men's programs.

Season ticket holders who already have tickets printed with the original March 2 date will still have their tickets honored at the gates.

The Fort Hays State men's basketball team is ranked No. 19 in the most recent NABC Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday. The Tigers moved down five spots after going 1-1 last week and now hold an overall record of 21-6 on the season. This is the fifth-straight NABC poll the Tigers have been in the Top 25. The Tigers slipped out of the D2CSC Top 25 to the receiving votes list in the latest version of that poll.

Fort Hays State has put together three-straight seasons of at least 21 wins. The Tigers have reached 21 wins for the ninth time under head coach Mark Johnson, who is in his 23rd&nbsp;season coaching the program. The Tigers have reached at least 20 wins in 12 of his seasons at the helm. FHSU won 23 games in 2021-22 and 21 in 2022-23. Johnson is on the verge of his 450th&nbsp;win at FHSU, sitting at 449-218 overall leading the Tigers.

This is the 113th&nbsp;time the Tigers have been ranked in the NABC Top 25 during their NCAA Division II history. They are 187-48 all-time when holding an NABC ranking.

Fort Hays State and Northwest Missouri State (No. 6 in both polls) represent the MIAA in both top 25 polls. The Bearcats moved up four spots in both the NABC and D2CSC polls this week.

The Central Region and South Central Region have the most teams in the NABC Top 25, each with five. Seven of the top ten teams in the country are among the two regions. Central Region teams ranked include Minnesota State (No. 3), Northwest Missouri State (No. 6), MSU Moorhead (No. 9), Minnesota Duluth (No. 11), and Fort Hays State (No. 19).

Fort Hays State hosts Nebraska-Kearney on Friday for the regular season finale.

The Tigers moved down five spots after going 1-1 last week and now hold an overall record of 21-6 on the season. This is the fifth-straight NABC poll the Tigers have been in the Top 25. The Tigers slipped out of the D2CSC Top 25 to the receiving votes list in the latest version of that poll.Fort Hays State has put together three-straight seasons of at least 21 wins. The Tigers have reached 21 wins for the ninth time under head coach Mark Johnson, who is in his 23rd&nbsp;season coaching the program. The Tigers have reached at least 20 wins in 12 of his seasons at the helm. FHSU won 23 games in 2021-22 and 21 in 2022-23. Johnson is on the verge of his 450th&nbsp;win at FHSU, sitting at 449-218 overall leading the Tigers.This is the 113th&nbsp;time the Tigers have been ranked in the NABC Top 25 during their NCAA Division II history. 🏀 Monday's Sub-State results

OAKLEY – The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs outscored Oakley 12-0
to start the fourth quarter and rallied from a second-half deficit to beat the
Plainsman 50-44 Monday and advance to the 2A sub-state semifinals Thursday in
Oakley.

Oakley jumped out to an early 4-0 but TMP coach Rose McFarland
called an early timeout and that allowed the Monarchs to put together an 8-2
run to end the first quarter giving TMP the 8-6 lead.

In the second quarter Oakley retook the lead at 9-8 with
just under seven and a half minutes left in the first half.

But just like in the first quarter, TMP had an answer. This
time it was a 7-2 run highlighted by a Brynn Rebel three-pointer and a pair of
Shalee Gottschalk layups putting TMP up 17-11.

Oakley’s Justice Booker answered right back scoring eight
straight putting Oakley up at halftime 19-17.

Oakley also scored the first field goal of the second half after
a TMP turnover making it a 10-0 run.

TMP then put together a 9-2 run of their own taking a brief 26-23 lead on
a Shyanne Yost three-pointer but Oakley answered with a three on their next
possession and built a 32-27 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Brooke Koenigsman started the scoring in the fourth quarter with
a three pointer, sparking a 12-0 run that was capped off by a Koenigsman three
and layup putting TMP up 39-32.

Koenigsman scored her fourth three-pointer of night, part of her
team-high 18 points as the Monarchs built a 42-34 lead with just over four
minutes and 40 seconds left in the game.

Down the stretch the Monarchs struggled out the free throw
line, going just 3-of-10 but they were able to secure the 50-44 victory.

The Monarchs will take on Smith Center Thursday in the sub-state semifinals after the Lady Red defeated Hill City 53-22.

The other two games in the 2A Oakley sub-state saw top-seed Hoxie defeat Plainville 70-18 and Ellis edged Trego in the four vs. five matchup.&nbsp;

TMP and Smith Center will play in the 6 p.m. game Thursday followed by Hoxie and Ellis.

🏀 Lady Monarchs use second half rally to advance to sub-state semis

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Tylor Perry scored 29 points and made six 3-pointers, Cam Carter added 19 points and Kansas State let a 25-point lead slip away before beating West Virginia 94-90 in overtime on Monday night.

Kansas State (17-11, 7-8 Big 12 Conference) set an NCAA single-season record with its seventh overtime victory, extending Jerome Tang’s mark to 12-0 in his two seasons as coach. West Virginia (9-19, 6-9) remains winless on the road this season, going 0 for 8.

Kansas State built a six-point lead, 87-81, in overtime before RaeQuan Battle made West Virginia's first field goal of extra time with 1:48 left. Battle made another 3-pointer with 34 seconds left to get within 89-88.

Kansas State dribbled down the clock before Perry was fouled and made two free throws for a 91-88 lead with 15.4 seconds left. The Wildcats elected to foul before West Virginia could attempt a tying 3-pointer. Kerr Kriisa made two free throws with 12.3 to get within 91-90.

Perry made two free throws with 8.8 seconds left for a 93-90 lead. Battle was long on a 3-pointer at the other end and Kansas State got the ball back after an official review. Carter sealed it with a free throw.

Will McNair Jr. and Arthur Kaluma each added 13 points for Kansas State. The Wildcats entered making just 30.7% of their 3-point attempts and finished 15 of 31 (48.4%) against the Mountaineers.

Battle scored 28 points and made six 3-pointers, and Kriisa added 25 points and five 3-pointers for West Virginia. Jesse Edwards, averaging 14.6 points per game, was held to five points on 1-of-9 shooting.

Kansas State led 48-26 at halftime after making 11 of 19 from 3-point range, while West Virginia was just 11 of 33 overall. The Wildcats led by as many as 25 points, 66-41, in the second half.

Kriisa made his second 3-pointer during a 10-0 run with 2:13 left in regulation to give West Virginia a lead, 77-74, for the first time since it was 11-10. He added two free throws to make it 79-75.

McNair grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back to get Kansas State within 79-77. After Edwards missed two straight free throws for West Virginia, Perry was fouled on a baseline drive before making two at the stripe to tie it at 79-all with 15.5 left. Kriisa's contested jumper at the buzzer didn't hit the rim and Edwards wasn't able to get another shot off before the buzzer.

Kansas State completed the season sweep of West Virginia for the first time since 2019.

The women finished third, their best finish in program history while the men tied their best finish at the MIAA Championships finishing fourth.

Throughout the championship, the Tigers displayed remarkable skill, garnering a pair of MIAA champions, five All-MIAA honors, with three distinctions bestowed upon the men's team and two upon the women's team. The teams attained an impressive 15 national qualifying marks, eight on the men's side and seven on the women's.

Ethan Lang&nbsp;emerged as a standout performer in the men's 600y event, capturing the top position with an impressive time of 1:10.45, solidifying his reputation in the 600y. This is his third conference championship in the 600y, winning the 2021 and 2022 races. Trevor Medina&nbsp;showcased his prowess in the 800m, securing a commendable second-place finish with a time of 1:51.51, contributing valuable points to the team's overall tally. This mark is his third&nbsp;All-MIAA mark as a Tiger.

In the men's 3,000m race, Grant Bailey&nbsp;demonstrated exceptional endurance and determination, clinching an impressive third-place finish with a time of 8:18.91, further bolstering the team's performance. This is Bradley's fourth All-MIAA mark, third indoor. On the women's front, Jaycee Vath&nbsp;showcased her capabilities in the 3,000m event, crossing the finish line in fourth place with a time of 10:05.89, while Regan Hodsden&nbsp;followed closely behind in fifth place with a time of 10:08.35, highlighting the team's talent in distance events.

In relay competitions, both the men's and women's 4x400m teams exhibited seamless teamwork and impressive speed, with the men securing a commendable second-place finish and the women achieving a fifth-place position. Both marks are good enough for a shot at nationals with the men's mark putting the quartet second all-time and the women's mark was the third fastest in program history.

In field events, Annabeth Baalmann&nbsp;delivered an exceptional performance in the women's pole vault, securing a fourth-place finish with a clearance of 12-9.00, while Jacob Clark&nbsp;led the charge for the men, securing fourth place in the pole vault with a height of 16-3.50. Jayme Hagerman&nbsp;leaped to ninth place in the women's triple jump with a mark of 37-3.75, while Abby Rueschoff&nbsp;finished 15th with a jump of 35-9.50. In the men's triple jump, Dean Clark delivered&nbsp;a distance of 44-4.25&nbsp;for 15th&nbsp;place. In the women's shot put event, Liberty Booker&nbsp;demonstrated her strength with a throw of 41 feet and 8.75 inches, earning her 11th.

The first three batters of the game reached base for the Lions, prompting FHSU to go to the bullpen in Ty Riley. The flame-throwing right hander was able to get out of the jam with two strikeouts and a flyout.

The Tiger bats fed off Riley's momentum when Kyle Morrell&nbsp;worked a two-out walk, triggering a rally in the bottom of the first. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;followed with a single before Jose Cintron&nbsp;plated the first run of the game with a single through the hole at short.

Riley retired the side in order in the top of the second before Sebastian Burgos&nbsp;led off the home half of the inning with his first home run of the season, a line-drive blast over the wall in left on a 2-0 pitch.

Missouri Southern again left the bases loaded in the top of the third before managing just one baserunner over the next two innings. Fort Hays State added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth when Herrmann reached on a one-out error. The first baseman then raced home on a Cintron double into the gap in right center, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

The Lions seemed poised to get on the board in the sixth after recording two hits, but Riley again escaped the jam by stranding the bases loaded for the third time.

Fort Hays State made it a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Jamison Armstrong&nbsp;led off with a single to left center. He advanced to second on a passed ball before later scoring on a two-out base knock from Morrell. Cintron tacked on his third RBI of the game with another single two batters later, plating Morrell and stretching the Tiger lead to 5-0.

The visitors broke through in the seventh, scoring one run on a solo home run and another on a dropped third strike, but Riley was able to limit the damage after getting out of the inning with a fly ball to left on his 127th pitch of the afternoon.

Fort Hays State had chances to add to its lead in the seventh and the eighth, but the Tigers stranded a pair in both innings to keep the score at 5-2.Pitching for the second time this weekend, Tanner Vaughn&nbsp;worked around a two-out double to escape the eighth thanks to a called third strike for out number three. The Tigers called on Spencer Maley&nbsp;to finish the ninth after Vaughn was hit in the back by a line drive. Maley needed 14 pitches to record the final three outs, inducing one fly ball and two groundouts.

Missouri Southern finished the game with 14 runners left on base, while the Tigers left 13 runners stranded.

Riley (2-0) struck out nine batters in 7.0 innings of relief, allowing two runs on four hits and five walks. Vaughn gave up one unearned run and struck out one batter in 1.0 innings of work, while Maley retired all three batters he faced to pick up his second save of the year.

&nbsp; TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State was on the short end of its final two contests at the Washburn Invitational on Sunday. The Tigers fell 2-0 to Winona State and 6-2 to St. Cloud State. FHSU moved to 9-5 overall on the season. Winona State moved to 9-2 after the contest with FHSU and St. Cloud State is now 9-4.

Winona State 2, Fort Hays State 0 After getting shutout their second game Saturday, the Tiger bats struggled once again in run-scoring opportunities. FHSU had chances with runners in scoring position in the first and seventh innings, but could not push across a run.

Savanah Egger&nbsp;took another tough-luck complete game loss, allowing just two runs in her third start of the weekend. She allowed a leadoff homer to WSU in the first and then a two-out RBI double in the third produced the second run. Otherwise, she scattered just four hits with a walk and struck out seven. Egger is now 5-2 on the season. The Tigers have gone scoreless offensively in her last 15.1 innings of work.

Izzy Howe threw a complete-game shutout for the Warriors, allowing four hits also with two walks and five strikeouts.

St. Cloud State 6, Fort Hays State 2 Fort Hays State took an early lead with a run in the second, but St. Cloud State used three home runs to power its way to a 6-2 win in the final game of the weekend. Two home runs in the bottom of the second flipped the score to a 4-1 SCSU advantage and the Huskies led for the remainder of the game. FHSU cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth, but SCSU got the run back in the bottom half of the inning and then added its final run in the sixth.

Carly Stuke&nbsp;put the Tigers in the lead in the second with a solo home run. In the fifth Emily Mayer&nbsp;doubled and came in to score on a sacrifice fly RBI by Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson. The Tigers had just five hits in the game, all by different players.

Emma Eickhoff threw a complete game for the Huskies. She finished with three strikeouts and allowed two walks. Eickhoff moved to 4-1 on the season.

Morgan Schmidt&nbsp;threw the first 1.1 inning for the Tigers, allowing four runs before handing the ball to Bailey Carlson&nbsp;who threw the final 4.2 innings. Schmidt had two strikeouts and Carlson had one.

The Tigers now prepare for a mid-week trip out to Denver this coming Wednesday for a doubleheader at MSU Denver. The games start at 12 p.m. (1 p.m. Central Time).

🥎 FHSU falls twice Sunday in Topeka

SALINA – The Hoxie Indians boys wrestling team placed eight
in the top six, with four individual champions, as they claimed the 3-2-1A state
wrestling team title for the fourth straight year at the Tony’s Pizza Event
Center in Salina on Saturday.

The Indians Ian Giancola (120 pounds) and Carson Ochs (132
pounds) are now both two-time state champions after claiming individual titles
last season and again this year.

Duncan Bell (157 pounds) and Sam Watkins (190 pounds) claimed
their first individual state championship Saturday and both have now medaled in
multiple state tournaments. 

Kash Schiltz (3rd at 113 pounds) and Gavin
Schippers (3rd at 285) have also won multiple medals. And with his
third place finished at 165 pounds Easton Nickelson brought home his first
medal from the state tournament.

Hoxie finished with 260 team points, Norton was second with
101 and Sabetha third with 100.5.

Other area medal winners include Tate Blackwill of Quinter
who finished second at 106 pounds. He lost&nbsp; to Norton’s Kaleb Keiswetter in the
title match. 

Ellis’ Mason Younger became the first two-time state championship
in school history on Saturday. He earned a first-place finish at 144 pounds with
a 3-1 win over Dustin Loughrie from Haven.

Younger won the 126 pound weight class as a junior.

Hill City’s Aiden Amrein also repeated as state champion at
175 pounds. 

Amrein defended his state title, at 175 pounds, with a 6-3 win
over Gage Lee of Garden Plain. With the victory he became a four-time state
placer from the Ringnecks.

The Ringnecks had two other medal winners with Dayton
Stephen bringing home a third-place finish at 157 pounds and Alexander Hamel
was fifth at 113 pounds.

Plainville’s Mason Hogan was the lone medal winner for the
Cardinals. He earned a fifth-place finish at 285 pounds.

In the 4-1A girls championship it was Rossville rallying late
to beat the Oakley girls by just one-half point to claim the girls team
championship.

Oakley had five medal winners but all by one lost in their
final match of the tournament and that allowed Rossville to claim the title
with 82.5 team points. Oakley finished with 82 points and Chanute had 80. 

Area girls medal winners included Kaydawn Haag of Ellis who
finished runner-up at 140 pounds. 

Haag was attempting to repeat as champion but Goodland’s
Destiny Gonzalez, who finished second at 145 pounds last year, beat Haag in
this year’s championship match. 

Ellis’ Maleah Vine also earned at sixth place finish at 135
pounds. 

Stockton’s Carolina Northrup became a two-time state placer
when she defeated Kaeleigh Klein of Plainville for fifth and sixth.
