Fort Hays State plays the first of three straight home games to close out the regular season on Thursday night against Pittsburg State. The Tigers enter the game 20-5 overall and 15-4 in the MIAA, ranked No. 14 in the latest NABC Top 25 Poll and No. 25 in the D2CSC Poll. The Gorillas are 15-9 overall and 11-7 in the MIAA. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

This game is a matchup of second and third-place teams in the MIAA. FHSU sits alone in second in the MIAA standings, two games back of conference leader Northwest Missouri State. Pittsburg State is currently in a three-way tie for third, three-and-a-half games back of FHSU for second. Fort Hays State is now one win away from locking up a top-two seed in the MIAA Tournament.

Fort Hays State is looking to even the regular season series with Pittsburg State after falling in Pittsburg 74-62 earlier this season. The Tigers were within two points of the Gorillas with three minutes to go, but fell cold on the offensive end and saw the Gorillas end the game on a 10-0 run. That snapped a three-game win streak by the Tigers in the series. FHSU has won the last two meetings between the teams in Hays.

The Tigers enter this game on a four-game win streak, which matches their longest of the season. They had won four in a row twice before this season and try to extend the third occurrence into five Thursday night. FHSU's current run of four wins includes home victories over Newman and Central Oklahoma two weeks ago, and road victories over Lincoln and Central Missouri last week. FHSU held the opposition to less than 50 points in three of those four games.

Pittsburg State was on a six-game heater until seeing their streak snapped last week in a three-point loss at Missouri Southern. That six-game win streak allowed the Gorillas to move up into the upper echelon of the MIAA standings, sitting neck-and-neck with Washburn and Rogers State in third.

By holding opponents inside of 50 points in both wins last week (Lincoln-41, Central Missouri-47), the Tigers dropped their nation's best scoring defense average to 56.4 points per game allowed. The Tigers are 3.5 points per game better than Northwest Missouri State's 59.9 per game that ranks second. FHSU has held opponents inside of 50 points 11 times this season and inside of 60 points 14 times. The MIAA boasts five of the nation's top-15 scoring defenses, which also includes Central Missouri, Central Oklahoma, and Lincoln.

Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;is just 10 points away from another major milestone, nearing 1,500 career points. He already has over 400 assists in his career, so he is looking to become the third player in program history with at least 1,500 points and 400 assists. The past Tigers to accomplish the feat include Raymond Lee and Mark Wilson. Hammeke leads the Tigers at 14.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game.

Averaging double figures in scoring alongside Hammeke is Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;at 12.6 points per game. He reached double figures in eight of the last nine games, with the only exception being an 8-point performance. Shaun Riley, Bjarni Jonsson and Jahiem Holden&nbsp;are all adding at least 7.0 points per game offensively.

Fort Hays State is up to No. 14 in the latest NABC Top 25 Poll, which is their highest ranking in that poll since the 2011-12 season when they reached No. 8 on January 3, 2012.With the win last week at Central Missouri, the Tigers secured their 12th&nbsp;20-win season under head coach Mark Johnson. The Fort Hays State women's basketball team returns home to wrap up the regular season with three-consecutive games inside Gross Memorial Coliseum starting Thursday when the Tigers host Pittsburg State. Opening tip is set for 5:30 p.m.

The Tigers (19-6, 13-6 MIAA) and Gorillas (19-5, 13-5 MIAA) are in the middle of a logjam atop the conference standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season. Six different teams still have a chance to finish atop the league, with just three games separating first place and sixth place in the standings.

Fort Hays State picked up a big road win over the Gorillas earlier this season, pulling away in the second half to win by double figures, 68-53 (1/13/24). The Tigers are 3-1 so far this season with a chance to complete a season sweep against a conference rival.

Fort Hays State is celebrating the 50th anniversary season of Gross Memorial Coliseum this weekend. The Tigers are 565-140 all-time inside GMC, good for a winning percentage north of 80 percent.

The Tigers need one win to extend Division II's longest active streak of 20-win seasons to 13. The Tigers have reached the 20-win plateau each year since 2011-12. The next-best active streak of 20-win seasons in the MIAA is four from Nebraska-Kearney.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team is one of 10 teams currently under consideration for selection into the 2024 NCAA Division II Central Region Championships, announced Wednesday (Feb. 21) by the NCAA office.

In recent years the NCAA has released the first set of region rankings in alphabetical order before announcing the teams in rank order in the next two releases. Final selections for the field of eight teams will be announced on Sunday, March 10. The Tigers are one of seven MIAA programs in the region's top 10, joined by one school representing the Northern Sun and two institutions from the Great American Conference.

While the Tigers are 19-6 on the year, two of those wins came against NAIA opponents, giving FHSU an overall DII record of 17-6. All of those games came against in-region opponents, with the Tigers facing an in-region strength of schedule of .525 that ranks 17th-toughest out of the 41 teams in the region.

In addition to in-region results and strength of schedule, two of the other statistical metrics that the regional selection committee takes into consideration are performance indicator and in-region RPI. Fort Hays State currently has the seventh-best RPI in the region at .576, while the Tigers are ninth in performance indicator at 29.870.

The Tigers have wins over four of the other nine teams listed, including Minnesota State Mankato, Nebraska-Kearney, Northwest Missouri State and Pittsburg State.

Fort Hays State has played in seven of the last nine regional championship tournaments, serving as the top overall seed four times and playing in three regional finals.

🏀 Tiger women in the mix for regional selection

INDIANAPOLIS – The Fort Hays State men's basketball team was among the 10 teams listed in the first release of NCAA Region Rankings by the NCAA on Wednesday. For the first release of region rankings, the NCAA lists its top 10 teams currently being considered for selection to the NCAA Tournament by region alphabetically. The list of 10 teams can change week-to-week as future results affect the formulas for consideration. Rankings will be assigned to the teams in the second and third editions in the weeks ahead.

Fort Hays State is in good shape at this point, sitting at 20-5 overall. In the formula used for the NCAA Region Rankings, the Tigers are 17-5 overall since their three games against NAIA opponents are not factored in.

According to the report for the Central Region linked at the bottom of the region rankings page on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d2/regional-ranking">NCAA.com</a>, Fort Hays State has the fourth-best In-Region RPI and fifth-best Division II Performance Indicator value in the Central Region. Minnesota State owns the highest In-Region RPI and Performance Indicator values, while Northwest Missouri State is second-best in both and MSU Moorhead is third-best in both. Minnesota Duluth is fifth in RPI and fourth in Performance Indicator. The Tigers are seeking their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since the 2015-16 season after nearly missing an at-large selection each of the last two years when they won 23 and 21 games respectively.

For the first release of region rankings, the NCAA lists its top 10 teams currently being considered for selection to the NCAA Tournament by region alphabetically. The list of 10 teams can change week-to-week as future results affect the formulas for consideration. Rankings will be assigned to the teams in the second and third editions in the weeks ahead.Fort Hays State is in good shape at this point, sitting at 20-5 overall. In the formula used for the NCAA Region Rankings, the Tigers are 17-5 overall since their three games against NAIA opponents are not factored in.According to the report for the Central Region linked at the bottom of the region rankings page on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d2/regional-ranking">NCAA.com</a>, Fort Hays State has the fourth-best In-Region RPI and fifth-best Division II Performance Indicator value in the Central Region. 🎧 Defend the Fort Podcast: Tiger Talk (Feb. 21, 2024)

HAYS -&nbsp;Lily Garrison is a four year varsity golf letter winner for Hays High School. During her four years her average has dropped by nearly 16 strokes. All of that hard work has led to the opportunity to continue her golf career at Fort Hays State University.

Garrison medaled in just one tournament her freshman season. Her stroke average was in the triple digits. Each year that number dropped. She improved by five strokes as a sophomore and another six strokes as a junior. Garrison's senior season she lowered her average to 87.8.

The tournament results showed the improvement. Garrison medaled in four of ten tournaments as a junior and seven of nine during her senior campaign. Her final tournament was a 15th place finish at the two day state tournament. She is a two time All-WAC 2nd team member. An honor she garnered despite missing a tournament her senior season. She was also named to the Kansas Golf Coaches Association 5A All-State Honorable Mention squad as a senior.

Coach Mark Watts noted that even though she is a great golfer, Garrison is one of the best leaders he has ever had on the team.

This past season she was part of the state runner up team in 5A.

KANSAS CITY (AP0 —Eric Hosmer announced his retirement from baseball Wednesday following a 13-year career that included winning four Gold Gloves and helping lead Kansas City to victory in the 2015 World Series.

Hosmer, 34, was released by the Chicago Cubs on May 25 after hitting .234 with two home runs in 31 games. The first baseman decided not to pursue any other playing opportunities.

“You have to be 110% committed and doing what is necessary both physically and mentally to play at the major league level and I reached a point where I wasn’t there anymore,” Hosmer said. “I’m very satisfied with my career. I feel like I accomplished a lot, was around a lot of great people and have a lot of good stories to tell.”

Hosmer will begin telling those stories on air after partnering with former minor league teammate Anthony Seratelli to form MoonBall Media, which is launching a podcast called “Diggin’ Deep.” Hosmer will be one of the show’s hosts.

“Now that the playing days are over, I feel like I have so many fun stories that I want to give back,” Hosmer said.

Kansas City selected Hosmer third overall in the 2008 amateur draft and he made his major league debut three years later. He spent seven seasons with the Royals before signing an eight-year, $144 million contract with San Diego before the 2018 season.

Hosmer played five seasons for the Padres before being traded to Boston in 2022, then finishing up with the Cubs last year. He had a .276 career batting average and 198 home runs.

Hosmer was named the MVP in his lone All-Star Game appearance in 2016.

HAYS - Hays closed out their home schedule in the regular season by hosting Dodge City on senior night.

The Hays girls honored Brygette Ross and the boys honored Edwin Muller, Jack Weimer and Kyzer Fox.

Hays used a 14-2 first quarter run to open up what was a one point ball game at 3-2. The Indians never trailed in the game on their way to a 45-15 victory.

Hays scored the first three points of the game and Dodge City never got closer than one point. The Indians closed the first quarter leading 17-4.&nbsp;

An 8-0 mid-second quarter run pushed the Indians up to a 25-9 advantage. The Red Demons scored the final points before halftime to make it a 25-11 game at the break. Neither team scored for the final 2:10 of the second.

Hays was never threatened in the second half. The Indians allowed no second half field goals and just four successful free throws over 16 minutes.

Hays scored the first nine points of the third quarter and led 34-11 with just under two minutes remaining. A three pointer with thirty seconds remaining in the quarter gave the Indians a 39-15 lead heading to the fourth.

Hays scored the final points of the game at 45-15 with 6:05 remaining. The rest of the game was running clock and neither team score.

Hays has allowed 29 total points in the last two games. Kenlee Winter scored in double figures for the first time with a career high 14. The Indians 45 points were spread out among eight different players. Easha Potts led Dodge City with 12.

The victory gives Hays the outright conference title heading into their final game with Great Bend on Friday. Hays improves to 14-5, 7-0. Dodge City falls to 5-14, 1-6.

Hays scored the first seven points of the game on their way to a 43-25 win over Dodge City to claim the outright Western Athletic Conference title.

The first quarter for Hays resulted in a 7-0 and 7-2 runs to build a 14-4 lead. The Indians led 14-6 after the first quarter.

Hays again scored the first seven points of the second quarter. However after building their lead to 21-6, the Indians didn't score for the final 3:25 before halftime. Dodge City though was only able to ad four points to their side of the score board as Hays led 21-10 at the break.

Hays led by double figures for the entire second half. A 7-2 run during the third quarter build the Indians their biggest lead of the quarter at 30-13.

Hays had their biggest run at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter scoring nine straight points. They twice led by a game high 23 points and win 43-25.

🏀 Hays girls and boys win WAC titles on senior night

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs closed out the regular
season with a split doubleheader Tuesday night at Plainville. 

The Lady Monarchs
cruised to a 71-29 victory while the boys come up short, falling 60-45.

GIRLS: TMP 71, Plainville 29 The TMP girls built an early double-figure lead and then
outscored Plainville 31-10 in third quarter as they cruised to a 71-29 victory.

Gracyn Schipper scored the first two field goals to put TMP
up 4-0 early in the first quarter.

Then with the Monarchs (10-11, 6-4) leading 4-2, TMP strung
together a 20-2 run to end the first quarter and begin the second quarter as
they built a 24-4 lead with five minutes to play in the first half.

After going just three-for-12 from three in the first half TMP
made six three pointers in the third quarter as they outscored Plainville 31-10
building a 61-23 lead through three quarters.

With the running clock in the fourth quarter TMP went on to
the 71-29 victory.

The 71 points was a second-high for the Monarchs.

Brooke Koenigsman led all scorers with 19 points for TMP.
Hannah Rose added a career-high 14 points.

BOYS: Plainville, 60, TMP 45 The Plainville Cardinals (13-7, 8-2 MCL) used 25-6 run to erase
a first-half deficit and hand TMP a 60-45 loss Tuesday in Plainville.

The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth four times in
the first quarter until the Monarchs Ty Schmeidler knocked down a three-pointer
putting TMP up 13-9. 

&nbsp;Carson Liles second three
pointer of the first quarter gave TMP (9-12, 7-3 MCL) a 16-12 lead at the end
of the first quarter.

TMP’s Griffin Schumacher put TMP up 19-16 just a little more
than four and a half minutes left in the first half on a layup at 19-16.

But Plainville answered with a 25-6 run that covered more
than 10 minutes of the second and third quarters as the Cardinals built a 41-37
third quarter leading.

season with a split doubleheader Tuesday night at Plainville. The Lady Monarchs
cruised to a 71-29 victory while the boys come up short, falling 60-45.GIRLS: TMP 71, Plainville 29 The TMP girls built an early double-figure lead and then

made six three pointers in the third quarter as they outscored Plainville 31-10
building a 61-23 lead through three quarters.With the running clock in the fourth quarter TMP went on to

🏀 Monarchs split final doubleheader of the regular season at Plainville

The Fort Hays State men's basketball moved up four more spots in the most recent NABC Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday. The Tigers are up to No. 14 in the national rankings, and have jumped back into the D2CSC Top 25 Poll at No. 25. It is the highest ranking for the Tigers in the NABC Top 25 since the 2011-12 season, when they reached No. 8 in the nation.\

The Tigers are now 20-5 overall on the season after a pair of wins on the road at Lincoln and Central Missouri last week. With the win at Central Missouri, Fort Hays State has now won at least 20 games in a season 12 times under head coach Mark Johnson, accomplishing the feat for a third-straight season.

This is the 112th&nbsp;time the Tigers have been ranked in the NABC Top 25 during their NCAA Division II history. They are 186-47 all-time when holding an NABC ranking.

This is the fifth time overall and second time this season the Tigers have held a ranking in the D2CSC Top 25, a poll that began in 2014-15. FHSU was No. 16 in the D2CSC Poll early this year after a 2-0 start to the season and has been lurking in the receiving votes section for several releases prior to the February 20 release.

Fort Hays State and Northwest Missouri State (No. 7 in both polls) represent the MIAA in both top 25 polls. The Bearcats moved up four spots in both the NABC and D2CSC polls this week.

The Central Region continues to have the most teams in the NABC Top 25 with six. The group includes Minnesota State (No. 4), Northwest Missouri State (No. 7), Minnesota Duluth (No. 12), MSU Moorhead (No. 13), Fort Hays State (No. 14), and Minot State (No. 24). The South Central Region has five teams in the Top 25, which includes four teams in the top 10, headed by No. 1 ranked West Texas A&amp;M.

Fort Hays State hosts Pittsburg State (Thur.) and Missouri Southern (Sat.) this week. FHSU lost to Pittsburg State on the road earlier this season, but defeated Missouri Southern in Joplin.

&nbsp; NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team drops one spot to 14th in the latest USTFCCCA NCAA Division II rating index, released Tuesday by the coaches association.

The men's team has already broken four school records this season along with 24 provisional marks. The Tigers have five student-athletes that rank in the top 10 nationally, including high jumper Dayton Williams&nbsp;(6-11.5 feet), pole vaulter Jacob Clark&nbsp;(16-8.75 feet) and multi-event runner Nolan Churchman&nbsp;(5326 points in heptathlon). Ethan Lang, Week 4 MIAA Track Athlete of the Week, holds the fifth spot in the 800 meters for running a converted time of 1:49.40. Long jumper Keomonie Archie&nbsp;holds the second-best long jump in school history with a&nbsp;distance at 23-11.75 feet. Archie has only competed in two events as a freshman and looks to continue to improve FHSU's field team.

This past weekend, Hayden Albright&nbsp;broke the school record in the 400 meters for finishing in 47.47, this mark is good enough for the tenth best time in DII. Albright also holds a top 30 mark in the 200m (21.42 seconds). The Distance Medley team consisting of Trevor Medina, Hayden Albright, Ethan Lang and Grant Bradley&nbsp;broke the school record two weekends ago with a mark of 9:43.55. This mark currently ranks seventh nationally and good enough for a trip to nationals.

The Tiger men currently rank sixth in the central region as the team had a successful weekend including four first place winners and a season high five provisional marks at the Steve Miller Invitational.

The Tiger men conclude their strong indoor season at the MIAA Championships which are set to begin Friday and conclude Sunday. This event will be held in Topeka, Kan., the fifth time the Tigers will travel there this season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The TMP-Marian Monarchs close out the regular season Tuesday on the road in Plainville.&nbsp;

The TMP girls are looking to end a two-game losing streak while the TMP boys have won four of their last five games.&nbsp;

Tipoff of the girls game is set for 6:00 p.m. with the boys to follow from Gardinal Gymnasium on the Monarchs Sports Network.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Max Abmas became the 12th player in men's Division I history to reach 3,000 career points and Texas held off Kansas State 62-56 on Monday night.

Abmas, a graduate transfer who played his first four seasons for Oral Roberts University, entered play needing six points to reach the milestone. He finished with eight and has scored 450 points for the Longhorns (17-9, 6-7 Big 12 Conference) this season.

Dylan Disu finished with a game-high 20 points for Texas. He made 5 of 11 shots from the floor and 10 of his 11 free throws, adding eight rebounds and three steals. Tyrese Hunter had nine points and seven boards. Dillon Mitchell totaled eight points and 10 rebounds with a pair of blocked shots.

Arthur Kaluma paced the Wildcats (15-11, 5-8) with 15 points and seven rebounds. Tylor Perry added 13 points and four assists, but he also had six of K-State's 13 turnovers. David N'Guessan pitched in with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Longhorns were 5 for 7 at the free-throw line, while K-State made 1 of 4.Abmas reached the milestone on a jumper with 14:04 remaining in the second half, giving Texas a 35-31 lead. Ithiel Horton followed with a 3-pointer and Hunter's layup capped a 7-0 run as the Longhorns moved in front 40-31.Kansas State closed within 48-42 on a layup by N'Guessan with five minutes left. Texas pushed its lead to 12 — its largest of the game — but Kaluma had a four-point play and Will McNair added a layup to get the Wildcats within 54-48 with 2:12 left to play.Cam Carter hit two free throws with 50 seconds remaining to cut K-State's deficit to 56-52, but Disu sank four foul shots in a row to seal it.
