She was born on February 28, 1930, to Joseph M. and Albina (Kuhn) Rome.&nbsp;She married Donald F. Gross on May 1, 1954, in Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp;He preceded her in death on June 21, 1994. Rita was employed at The Farmers National Bank in Victoria upon graduating from high school and continued there until the birth of her first child.&nbsp;She was an excellent seamstress, sewing clothes for her children and extended family.&nbsp;Her holiday crafts are now a treasure for her family.&nbsp;She was an avid reader in her leisure time. Rita valued her faith, family, and neighbor.&nbsp;In her later years, her rosary beads were always in her hands.&nbsp;She cherished her family and was so proud of their accomplishments.&nbsp;She made life-long friends of her many neighbors whom she was among the first to welcome to the neighborhood.&nbsp; She was a volunteer at St. Fidelis Parish gathering updated information for the 3rd edition of “Die Herzoger” and was assistant editor of the parish cookbook, “Sharing Our Best”, which has sold thousands of copies and is still in demand.&nbsp;She was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis, St. Fidelis Christian Mother/Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella and a Victoria Alumni Association newsletter committee member.&nbsp;She was a 1947 Victoria High School graduate. Survivors include her daughter, Janet Trombley and husband, Don, Newtown, PA; her son, Michael Gross and wife, Virginia, Lake Quivira, KS; a granddaughter, Lauren Smith and husband, Bryan, Littleton, CO; a grandson, Bret Gross and wife, Kelsey, Lenexa, KS; a grandson, Ryan Trombley, Chicago, IL; grandsons, Sam Gross, New York, NY; and Will Gross, Austin, TX; and two great-grandchildren, Gwen Gross and Perry Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Robert; an infant daughter, Anne Marie; her parents; a sister, Mary Lou Rome; and two infant brothers.&nbsp; Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. She is home in the arms of her loving Lord and Savior. Lorraine began her earthly life on June 25, 1932. She was born at the home place in rural Sheridan County near the Lucerne area to Paul and Ruth (Mowry) Mills. Lorraine was the only girl of four children. Along with her three brothers, she grew up on the family farm and lived there until her marriage. Lorraine attended Bow Creek School for the first eight years and attended Sheridan Community High School in Hoxie, Kansas, graduating with the class of 1950. When attending high school, Lorraine stayed in town during the week and went home on the weekends. Lorraine Mills and Edwin “Ed” Coulter were high school sweethearts. Ed was drafted into the service. During the time Ed was serving in the army, Lorraine went to Amarillo, Texas to help out with an uncle’s children. She and Ed continued their courtship, and one day in late May, Lorraine boarded the bus to go visit Ed. Much to everyone’s surprise, the couple got married on June 2, 1952 in Rockingham, North Carolina in the Methodist Parsonage. This was the beginning of happy married life. They were blessed with three children, Janet, Chuck and Tim. Lorraine and Ed lived most of their life on the farm until moving to town upon retirement. Lorraine was a loving wife, and worked hard raising her children, and helping Ed with the farm. She planted plentiful gardens and canned the produce to help feed her family. She was a great cook and enjoyed sharing what she had with her family and friends. She would give credit to everyone else for the amazing meals she prepared. There was no one more welcoming and accepting than Lorraine. She would always claim she was too shy to talk to people, but in reality, she was just giving everyone around her time to shine. She was quick to give praise to others and laugh at everyone’s joke. There was no one more generous and loving to those around her than Lorraine. Lorraine leaves behind her daughter, Janet Dunbar and husband Ron of Menahga, Minnesota; sons, Chuck Coulter and wife Lisa of Tishomingo, Oklahoma; Tim Coulter and wife Lori of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; brother, Lloyd Mills of Houston, Texas; sister-in- law JoAnn Mauck and husband Laverne of Hoxie; grandchildren, Corene Smith and husband Brian, C.J. Dunbar and wife Carolynn, William Dunbar, Christopher Coulter, Michael Coulter, Breck Coulter, and Malone Coulter; great-grandchildren, Grace Smith, Eden Smith, and soon to be born, baby boy Smith; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. She has gone to her heavenly home to join her loving husband, Edwin “Ed” Coulter; parents, Paul and Ruth Mills; grandson, Braden Bertelli; brothers, Albert Mills and Norman Mills; and sisters-in-law, Nadine Mills and Veryl Mills; brothers-in-law Elvin Coulter, Elvis Coulter, and sisters-in-law Elva Coulter, Wanda Coulter, Irene Coulter, and Ann Coulter. Lorraine was a kind, gentle person who rarely or if ever spoke a bad word about anyone. She was a woman of great faith and loved the Lord with all her heart. Her family was so dear and important to her, and she loved them unconditionally. Lorraine and Edwin are again holding hands, laughing, and walking together in in God’s Glory. Her gentle words and touch will be missed by many, as will her infectious laugh, sense of humor and bright smile. Hold her memory in your heart. As the song goes, Lorraine was truly the wind beneath so many wings. A funeral service is planned for Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at the Hoxie Christian Church, Hoxie, Kansas. He was born October 15, 1947, in Hays, the son of Paul and Emmerentia (Haselhorst) Werth.&nbsp;In 1965 he graduated from Schoenchen High School.&nbsp; He was a United States Navy veteran serving on the USS Providence during the Vietnam War.&nbsp;He was a retired carpenter for Haselhorst Construction.&nbsp;&nbsp; On February 19, 1989, he was united in marriage to Lisa Harvey in Wichita.&nbsp;They celebrated 30 years of marriage.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the VFW.&nbsp;He loved fishing, watching Western movies, family gatherings, walking by the Smoky River, sitting on his porch enjoying the outdoors, and spending time with his grandson, Brody, who was his pride and joy.&nbsp;Gary’s kind heart, sense of humor, and positive outlook on life will be missed by many, always and forever. He was a member of the Santa Fe Trail Association, Wet/Dry Routes Chapter, Fort Larned National Historic Site Old Guard, Rotary Club, Prairie Arts Unlimited, Larned Area Chamber of Commerce, and also served as Chairman of the Pawnee County Planning Commission, all of Larned. His life partner and fiancé since 1997 was Tonya Schadel. Survivors include; his father and step-mother, Robert and Betty Seltmann, Nekoma, his fiancé Tonya Schadel, Larned; a step-daughter Dallas Munden, Wichita and his brother, Richard Seltmann, Rozel. He was preceded in death by his mother Donna Seltmann. He was born October 2, 1927, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Thomas Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (Fitts) Glynn. He worked for the US Postal Service and then the Department of Defense where he retired as a Sergeant Major. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, and was also a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants. On April 12, 1949, he married Marlene Nettleingham, they later divorced. On March 14, 1964, he married Mickie Thomas, in Hoisington. She preceded him in death on March 12, 2008. Survivors include; a son, Hilton Glynn and wife Marie of Hoisington; son-in-law, Dan Esfeld of Hoisington; four grandchildren; Erin Hemphill and husband Brandon, Hayley Oswald, Jason Esfeld and wife Cindy, and Vania Earp; and nine great grandchildren, Addy and Avery Hemphill, Valerie Oswald, Dalton, Logan, and Megan Esfeld, and Peyton, Reagan, and Leah Earp. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mickie Glynn, a daughter, Sherie Esfeld; siblings, Tommy Glynn, Mildred Ehrlich, Virginia Morris, John Glynn, Dorothy Degner, and Mary June Little. She was born Oct. 16, 1948, in Great Bend, to Adolph and Ella (Weigt) Schrott. Sharon married James R. “Randy” Schneider Aug. 23, 1969, in Olmitz. He survives. Sharon was a graduate of Otis High School with the class of 1966 and graduated from Ft. Hays State University in 1970. She was a resident of Eden Prairie since 1988, coming from Hutchinson, Kan., a homemaker, former teacher at Utica High School and retired from MCC in 2010. Her true love was being a wife, mom, grandma, being with friends and being on the farm. She was a member of Pax Christi Catholic Church, Eden Prairie, 7 Hi Cruisers Car Club and a former member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz. Survivors include husband, James R. "Randy" Schneider of the home; one son, Shaun Schneider and wife Ginny of Chuluota, Fla.; two daughters, Wendy Webster and husband Seth of St. Anthony, Minn., and Kelly Dassow and husband Andy of Medford, Wis.; one sister, Charlotte Wagner and husband Larry of Hutchinson Kan.; and seven grandchildren, Chandler and Jayden Webster, Gavin and Leo Schneider and Colton, Ashlyn and Remi Dassow. He was born August 1, 1972, in Hays to Gordon and Diane (Gerstner) Steckline. Sean was working as a Maintenance Technician for Main Event in Kansas City. He was a graduate of Hays High and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and pool. He is survived by his parents Gordon and Diane of Hays; a brother, Kurtis Steckline of Hays; a sister, Tacey Steckline of Hays; a nephew, Joshua Labandeira and three nieces, Bailey Steckline, Hailey Zeman and Lilly Zeman. The family moved to Healy, Kansas where Vicki thrived in all the clubs and sports a small town country girl could be involved in. She eloped with Robert W. Ellis on August 11, 1963 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Bob passed away September 27, 1988. Later she married Larry J. Enfield, Sr. on May 25, 1990. Larry passed away May 19, 2013. Vicki considered herself a lucky woman to have two great loves of her life. She and Bob raised 3 children and stayed busy with their activities and enjoyed ski trips to Breckenridge, Colorado. When Vicki married Larry Enfield, she gained a special son, Larry Joe. Vicki graduated from Healy High School in 1960 and later received her degree in nursing from Fort Hays State University in 1964. She worked in many settings with her nursing career; Hays Hospital, Norton Hospital, Andbe Home, Norton, Lenora, and Almena Schools, Colby Community College Instructor, Norton State Hospital, and Valley Hope.She loved flowers and working outdoors. She had a wide interest in the beautification of Norton. The good Lord may have gotten a greeting followed with "You need more flowers" by the pearly gates. She enjoyed following her children's activities, walking, golf, bridge, traveling, and gardening. Vicki took great pride in her professional career and community involvement. She was a member of the Norton City Council, Norton Beautification Committee, PEO Sisterhood Chapter AA, Lifetime member FHSU Half Century Club, Lifetime member FHSU Alumni Association, Prairie Dog Recreation Center Ladies Golf, Bluejay Booster, The Order of the Eastern Star, The Daughters of Rebekah, Dinner Dance, and several bridge clubs. She would be "tickled to death" that you're all here for her. Vicki loved to entertain. She loved elegance and class. She passed on her love of British Royalty and First Ladies to her daughter. To her sons she passed on her love of football. You could count on beautiful decor and good food when you visited her home. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bob; eldest brother, Larri Lee; her parents, F. Raymond and Lola; her in laws, Ray and Helen Ellis, and Mae Enfield; her second husband Larry. He was born May 25, 1944, in Lebanon, KS, to Jacob and Magdalen (Geist) Pfannenstiel. On September 4, 1965, he was united in marriage to Cynthia Susan Bittel at St. Mary’s Church in Ellis, KS. Bill’s education included a BA in political science from Fort Hays State University in 1966 and a BS in education from University of Kansas in 1968. When he finished his degree at KU he served in the United States Air Force at Lackland Air Base in San Antonio, TX from 1968-1972, working with Project 100,000. After leaving the Air Force, Bill completed his Masters in Librarianship at Emporia State University. In 1973, he began his library career at Pittsburg High School.&nbsp;He also worked at Independence Community College and served as Reference Librarian at NEO A&amp;M College in Miami, OK. He concluded his career at Axe Library, Pittsburg State University, retiring in 2008. Bill had many interests and projects.&nbsp;He was involved with hosting PSU international students and helped with International Friends of Pittsburg.&nbsp;For the past 11 years he volunteered with Meals on Wheels.&nbsp;He and Cynthia cared for numerous rescued dogs and cats, enjoyed birding and outdoor activities.&nbsp;He enjoyed reading, working on improvements to the homestead, and landscaping. Bill was known for his generosity, kindness, and a profound respect for all life.He had a special loyalty and love for his friends and his family, especially for his beloved wife of 54 years. In addition to his wife, Cynthia, he is survived by a brother Gary Pfannenstiel and wife Claudia of Denver, CO, a sister Marge Bailey of Berryton, KS, and a sister Mary Forrester of Salina, KS. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, November 8, 2019, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father Jerome Spexarth as celebrant.&nbsp; The family suggests memorials be given to the S.E.K. Brian Friesen, 36, of Colby, died Saturday, November 16, 2019. He was born October 11, 1983, in Colby, Kansas, to Jon and Ann Friesen. He graduated from Colby High School in May 2002 and from Kansas State University in May 2007, with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance. Brian was a devoted father and loving son, farming with his mother and father on their grain farm in Colby. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Sam and Juanita Friesen and Will and Elaine Sander. He is survived by his children, Riley, Colin and Dylan, of Colby; parents, Jon and Ann Friesen, of Colby; sisters, Ashley Bridgeman (Jeremy, of Newton, Kansas and Katie Friesen, of Ames, Iowa and niece and nephews, Izzie, Aiden and Thomas Bridgeman, of Newton, Kansas. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM, Thursday, November 21, 2019 at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby, with a Vigil Rosary at 7 PM. <img src="https://media.eaglewebservices.com/public/2019/11/1574266106247.jpeg">Irvin Duane Miller, 81, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Sunday, November 17, 2019 at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell. Duane was born January 12, 1938 in Fairport, Kansas.&nbsp;He was one of two sons born to Irvin Fred and Ruby Pearl (Finch) Miller.&nbsp;He grew up and attended schools in Fairport and Natoma, Kansas.&nbsp;He graduated from Natoma High School. Duane served his country in the U.S. Marines.&nbsp;After his service was completed he returned to the Russell area. Duane was united in marriage to Donnie Jean Martin on June 11, 1960 in Russell.&nbsp;This union was blessed with three children; David, Dru and Micah. Duane and Donnie made their home in Topeka, Kansas where Duane worked in the transportation department of Santa Fe Railroad.&nbsp;A few years later Duane and Donnie moved to Scranton, KS, where they built and operated a dairy farm and Duane became Mayor. After selling the Dairy Farm they moved to Arkansas City, Kansas for a brief time before moving to Owosso, Michigan, where Duane was involved in the Railroad once again.&nbsp;A new job opportunity came up in Opelousas, Louisiana where Duane was the manager of transportation for Lou-Ana Foods Company for 20 years.&nbsp;In 2002 Duane retired the family moved to Russell and he began to farm&nbsp;as a hobby. In 2012, Duane formed Miller-Becker Enterprises, in which he was co-owner and operator.&nbsp;Donnie preceded him in death on January 19, 2015.&nbsp; Duane attended the Bible Baptist Church in Russell.&nbsp;He also enjoyed boating and fishing, coaching his children’s sporting activities and has been very active in his grandchildren’s lives.&nbsp;He was a supporter of the Fine Arts when his grandchildren were involved. Making memories with his family was his greatest joy. Duane’s surviving family include his daughter, Micah Becker (Ryan) of Russell, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Jenna Miller of Gorham, Kansas; 10 grandchildren, Riley, Reagan, Elijah and Silas Becker and Connor, Christian, Janessa, Malachi, Matthias and Jenson Miller.&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Donnie, sons David Miller and Dru Miller, and brother Ben Miller. She was born September 3, 1959, in Denver, Colorado to Luke Steinman Jr. and Wilda Jean (Chinn) Steinman.&nbsp; Melinda married Ronald D. Sporing on October 15, 1982 in Yuma, Colorado. Melinda and Ron lived between Goodland, KS, Denver, and parts of Eastern Colorado before settling in Haxtun, CO for 25 years.&nbsp;They then lived on farms near Holyoke, CO and Imperial, NE before moving to Colby, KS in March of 2019.&nbsp;In addition to caring for the many family members and friends that came into her life, Melinda was a paraeducator assisting those with special needs. Melinda is survived by her husband, Ronald D. Sporing; three sons, Kenneth Holiman and wife, Sheryle, Windsor, CO: Robert Steinman and wife, Faustina, Lincoln, NE; Ronald Sporing, Colby, KS; two daughters, Mindy Machlan, Denver, CO; Jensina Sporing, Colby, KS; her mother, Wilda Jean Benson, Haxtun, CO; two brothers, Dan Steinman, Camarillo, CA; Mark Steinman, Omaha, NE; one sister, Kim Steinman, Emerson, IA; 19 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.&nbsp; Melinda was preceded in death by her father, Luke Steinman Jr.; one son, Curtis Sporing; one brother, Robert Dean Steinman; and one sister-in-law, Cheryl Steinman. He was a fighter his whole life, overcoming countless obstacles and always believing that he could prevail. “If man made it, I can fix it” was his moniker. Bill adored his wife Vicky, his two children and four grandchildren. He enjoyed the outdoors: scouting, camping, boating, hunting, and spending time with family. He was born in St. Francis, Kansa,s to Lucile (Hirscheler) Auman. Bill graduated Wichita Heights in 1963. He married his high school sweetheart and gorgeous wife, Vicky (Sweasy) Auman, on May 8, 1965, in Wichita, KS. They moved to Hays, Kansas, in 1975, and started The Auman Company Plumbing, Heating and Air. Bill worked long hours, alongside Vicky, to build a thriving business. They sold the business upon retirement and moved to Newton, Kansas, to be closer to friends and siblings. In Newton, Bill became a Master Gardener and worked diligently at the Harvey County Master Gardeners Community Garden. He prided himself on the tens of thousands of pounds of produce raised to feed those in need in Harvey County. In late spring 2019, Bill and Vicky moved to Manhattan to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Bill loved visits with grandchildren at Meadowlark Hills’ Wroten House where he lived for the last six months of his life. Throughout his life, Bill put others before himself. He had a passion for sharing his expertise and growing and developing others. He leaves behind wife, Vicky; children, son Troy (and Erin) Auman, and daughter D.C. (and Jeremiah) Hackerott; and grandchildren Riley and Caleb Auman, and Uriah and Jaina Hackerott. He joins his mother Lucile Auman, his sister Luella Petrillo, and his brother-in-law and best friend Larry Sweasy. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 20 from 5 to 6:30 pm at Yorgensen Meloan Londeen (YML) Funeral home in Manhattan, KS. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, Nov 21 at 10 am at YML with burial to follow at Valley View Memorial Park on Highway 24, east of Manhattan. Memorial contributions can be made to the Meadowlark Good Samaritan Fund in Bill’s name. The fund is used to assist those in need of long term care who cannot afford to pay for it.
