Bernard Adolph Demel, 84, passed away July 24, 2020, in Norman, Oklahoma.

He was born February 9, 1939, on a farm near Odin, Kansas, the fourth
 of nine children born to Alois and Christina (Schneweis) Demel.

He met Joyce Kathleen (Kathy) Lane in in 1957 and they were married October 17, 1959.

While a boy during WWII, Bernie would watch pilots practice bombing 
runs over Cheyenne Bottoms. He had a life-long interest in planes and 
aviation and in 1964 he earned his Private Pilot License. For a time, 
had a part ownership in a small plane.

He was always inquisitive about how things worked and could 
disassemble (and successfully reassemble) nearly anything. As a youth he
 built a motorized wagon from parts in a scrap pile. To his high school 
friends he was known as "Mac" for his mechanical abilities.

He applied those talents in the U.S. Army, serving his country for 
three years at Fort Ord, CA and Fort Lewis, WA as a tank mechanic.

Following his honorable discharge from the service, he studied 
electronics at DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago. He returned home to
 work in a radio and television repair shop in Great Bend.

In 1964 he began working for Western Power &amp; Gas Company at the 
Mullergren power plant west of Great Bend. His role as a 
journeyman-repairman was principally instrument repair and maintenance, 
but his favorite times were when engineers would visit for major 
overhauls because he “always learned so much” during those projects. He 
was involved in nearly all aspects of the plant and spent 2 years as the
 Plant Superintendent. He retired from the company in 1995 and, in 
typical fashion, spent his retirement years continuing to learn by 
watching educational videos.

Bernie was also a farmer. He was descended from farmers and spent 
much of his youth living away from home working for his uncle on his 
farm. He and two brothers formed a hog raising partnership for a time 
and he worked many years for his brother Lawrence as his second job. In 
1974 he moved his family from Great Bend onto his own farm near 
Hoisington where he raised mostly cattle, wheat, and alfalfa.

He also built the family home. What began as a repair and update to 
the turn-of-the-century home on the property ended up as a tear-down 
when extensive structural damage was discovered. A replacement house was
 built from the foundation up by the family, with Bernie installing all 
of the electrical and plumbing, mixing and pouring the concrete for the 
front porch, and even laying the brick for chimney. There were few 
things he could not do well.

While not necessarily an “environmentalist”, he saw the wisdom of 
taking care of the land because when he worked with nature instead of 
trying to control it he had better results. He enjoyed observing nature 
and when returning from working the fields he would often relay stories 
of the wildlife he’d observed.

He retired from farming in 2001 and after relocating to Norman, OK, 
he and Kathy traveled. They visited Italy, Alaska, and Hawaii, and 
crossed through the Panama Canal twice. They visited New England, the 
upper-Midwest, and Washington DC, and ventured into the canyons of the 
western US &amp; Mexico. In 2016 he traveled to Maine, having now 
visited all 50 states. He claimed one of his favorite places was Costa 
Rico.

He joined the Knights of Columbus on January 1, 1955 and was the 
second longest serving Knight in Council 12108, having been a faithful 
Knight for 65 years.

Bernie died of complications from dementia. Over a number of years 
the disease took away the man he was and eventually led to a broken hip 
that sapped his life from him.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kathy Demel of the home; 
three sons, Kent Demel and his wife Colleen of Fort Worth, TX, Kevin 
Demel of Fort Worth, TX, and Kelly Demel and his wife Kim of Overland 
Park, KS; one daughter, Karen Sneed and her husband Steve of Norman, OK;
 and seven grandchildren: Eli, Emily, Erin, CJ, Cayton, Kelsey, and 
Kolin. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Demel and Tony
 Demel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 6, 
2020, at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, Norman. The service 
will be live-streamed at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3RBxYgF2PJKaS7zqz6gnkw">https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3RBxYgF2PJKaS7zqz6gnkw</a> and people are encouraged to attend virtually.

There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place. Due to

interment in St. John Church Cemetery, Hoisington, KS.

Caroline A. Lietz, age 53, of Hays, 
Kansas passed away July 23, 2020 at Hays Medical Center. She was born 
December 12, 1966 in Hays to Leo and Annabelle (Schmidt) Lietz. Caroline
 (more affectionately known as Carrie) was full of love and contagious 
laughter.&nbsp; Her love for her family, especially her nieces and nephews, 
was only matched by her love for her animals (Samba and Noodle)&nbsp;

She is survived by four brothers, Jack 
Lietz of Las Vegas, Bill Lietz of Lawrence, Tom Lietz of Hays and Steve 
(Kim) Lietz of Las Vegas; nephews, Jordan (Sarah) Lietz and Justin 
(Rachel) Lietz; nieces, Faith Lochmann and Christin Baxter; great 
nieces, Hannah Baxter and Annabelle Lietz; great nephew, Oliver Lietz 
and a great-great niece, Indigo Dietze.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Caroline A. Lietz

James Russel Cairns, age 75, of Hays, Kansas, died July 27, 2020, at Hays Medical Center Hays, Kansas.

He was born on November 7, 1944, in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, to Rev. J. Russell and Grace (Woolridge) Cairns.

In 1965, Reverend Cairns moved his family to Hays, Kansas, to minister The Assembly of God Church. Jim married Gloria (Stremel) on July 19,1969, in Hays, Kansas and later they divorced in 1982.&nbsp;

Jim and Gloria had two children, Amy and Michael.&nbsp; After his second year of ministry college, Jim was drafted and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict.&nbsp;

He was an office supply repair man for 20 years with Northwestern Office Suppliers in Hays.&nbsp; He later went on to drive a tour bus for All American Tours covering much of the United States and later drove the bus for Thomas More Prep-Marian High School in Hays.&nbsp; He was a youth baseball coach in Kansas and Colorado, an avid reader/historian, photographer, sports fan, movie fan, decent golfer, and all around ornery rascal.&nbsp; He marched to the beat of his own drum, and he will be dearly missed.&nbsp;

Survivors include his son, Michael James Cairns, Hays, KS; one grandson, Dylan Jacobs, Omaha, NE; four sisters, Gracie Preston and husband, Tom, Detroit MI; Beverly&nbsp;

Bourquin and husband, Achille, Utica, KS; Sarah Stephens and husband, Wayne, Sacramento, CA; Thomasena Cairns, Winchester, VA; many nieces and nephews; and his companion and special friend, Gloria Herrman and family, LaCrosse, KS. &nbsp;

James Russel Cairns

Edward Charles ”Ed” Geary, 78 of Lebo, passed away Friday, July 24, 2020 at the Coffey County Hospital in Burlington, Kansas. 

             He was born January 24, 1942 in in Norton, Kansas the son of Emmett and Dorothy Hardick Geary. Ed attended Densmore High School and graduated with the Class of 1960. Following high school, Ed took Barber Classes in Wichita.  He married the love of his life Dixie Beth Schick on May 29, 1964 in Logan, Kansas. A week after their marriage, Ed began a long career with King Construction Inc. 

Over the next few years, his job would take them throughout the state of Kansas from their first home in Hays to Salina, Cawker City, Hill City, and Lindsborg. Ed and Dixie would eventually make their home in Lebo in 1971. Ed continued as a Bridge Construction Foreman for over 40 years, retiring in 2007.  The last bridge that he built happened to be in the same location as the first bridge he was involved with building when he first moved to Lebo in 1971. Ed was a hard working man and that wouldn’t quit when he retired. So after retiring from King Construction Inc, it was no surprise that he began mowing yards and doing various odd jobs for the people of Lebo. 

Ed was an avid bowhunter, fisherman and all around outdoorsman. He enjoyed all things outdoors from hunting Elk in Colorado to hunting Coyotes in the pastures near Lebo. Ed was a founding member of Twin Lakes Bow Hunters Club. Over the years, he raised numerous hunting dogs and in the past several years he and Dixie enjoyed Yorkie and Maltese dogs. 

 Ed will live on in the hearts and memories of his devoted wife Dixie of their home in Lebo; daughters, Michelle  Geary of Lebo and Trease  (Roger) Gould of Lebo; a son, Curtis (Donna) Geary of Eureka; four grandchildren, Crystal Geary, Brent (Briana) Gould, Jacob (Sydney) Gould, Conner Gould and a great- granddaughter, Ellie Gould; a sister, Carolyn DeBoer; numerous special brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-laws, close nieces, nephews and countless hunting buddies and dear friends. 

Ed was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Geary. 

 Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, July 30, 2020 at the Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home in Lebo. Burial will follow services at Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M., Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

at Prairie Senior Living Complex, Colby. She was born January 22, 1940, 
in Stratton, CO, to Freddie and Alta (Miles) Pugh. Grace graduated from 
Stratton High School. She married Terrence Kiefer and they had 4 
children. Grace lived in Burlington, CO, where she was a member of the 
Rebekah Lodge. Grace later married Frank Mahaffey and moved to Goodland,
 KS. Upon Frank’s death in 2006 Grace moved to Colby, KS. She had worked
 as a nursing home CNA and enjoyed playing cards and crocheting in her 
spare time. Grace also loved being around her children and 
grandchildren.

Grace Maxine (Pugh) Mahaffey

Colleen Robin Kopfman, 64, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 in her home in Las Vegas, Nevada.&nbsp; She
 was born November 19, 1955 to Joseph Samson Sr. and Jill (Robbins) 
Samson&nbsp;of Ludell, Kansas. She graduated Atwood High School in 1973 and 
Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics in
 1977. She was an avid cook, baker, sewer, and crafter and loved

Colleen Robin Kopfman

On July 25, 2020, Erma Mae Pfeifer 
passed away at the Rhode Island Suites nursing home in Ransom, Kansas.&nbsp; 
She was born on January 2, 1929, at West Saline in Sheridan County, 
Kansas, to Alfred E. and Elsie (Adamson) Mills.&nbsp; She was the youngest of 
six children:&nbsp; Edward, Elbert, Evelyn, Elwood and Eva.&nbsp;

She grew up on a farm near Palco, 
Kansas but moved with her mother to Hoxie, Kansas during WWII.&nbsp; After 
the war, she met handsome army veteran Marcel Pfeifer, the love of her 
life.&nbsp; They were married on December 26, 1946, in Seguin, Kansas.&nbsp; Marcel
 and Erma eventually settled on a farm on the north fork the Solomon 
River near Studley, Kansas.&nbsp; They had eight children while on the farm.&nbsp;
 Marcel was an excellent farmer and Erma was his full partner in the 
enterprise.&nbsp; In 1979, they sold the farm and moved to Hays, Kansas where 
they built their dream home on Thunderbird Drive.&nbsp; Erma took a job at JC
 Penney that she loved.&nbsp; Erma was a social person and loved helping 
customers and visiting with them.&nbsp; Penney’s recognized Erma’s high 
quality and devoted service to the company with several awards that she 
was proud to receive.&nbsp;

Erma and Marcel were married for 64 
years when Marcel passed away in 2010. &nbsp;&nbsp;She is survived by Linda Deines
 and husband Dan of Manhattan, Brenda Bell and husband Ron of Manhattan,
 Marcella Bailey and husband Glen of Dodge City, Theresa Reeves and 
husband Jim of Oberlin, Roberta Eberle and husband Ted of Glen Elder, 
Brent Pfeifer of Dallas, Texas, and Shirley Logsdon and husband Max of 
Emporia.&nbsp; She had ten grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.&nbsp; She was

Alicia Christine Brull, 31, Hays, died Saturday, July 25, 2020 at her home.

of Victoria High School in the class of 2007, graduated from Hays 
Academy of Hair Design, and was preparing to attend welding school this 
fall.&nbsp; Every year she helped her family with harvest and could drive 
every piece of farm machinery.&nbsp; She was very creative, artistic and 
loved to draw, stayed busy working on things, and enjoyed fishing, going
 to races, and making others look beautiful.&nbsp; Alicia loved to listen to 
music, was adventurous, and liked having a good time.&nbsp; She was sweet, 
kind, selfless, was a huge fan of Batman, and she loved her dog, Jade.

Survivors include her father and 
step-mother; Chris and Krista Brull of Victoria, her mother and 
step-father; Penny and Larry Logan of Atmore, AL, her grandparents;

Alicia Christine Brull

Herbert Frederick Holste, age 95, of Ludell, Kansas, was called to his 
heavenly home on July 26, 2020. He was born on December 1, 1924, at the 
Holste farm northeast of Ludell, the son of Herman and Mary Hoffbauer 
Holste. 
God clothed Herbert with the righteousness of Christ when he was 
baptized on December 14, 1924 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Ludell by 
the Rev. Paul Strege. The Holy Spirit kept Herbert in the Christian 
faith as he was confirmed on April 10, 1938 at Immanuel, and as his 
membership moved to Grace Lutheran Church and then to Redeemer Lutheran 
Church in Atwood. He served in numerous capacities in this time frame, 
including church council secretary and trustee. Attending church was 
important to Herb, and when he was no longer able to be present 
physically, he would still worship through technology. 
Herbert attended Immanuel Lutheran School for his elementary education. 
He graduated from Atwood High School in 1942. He worked on the family 
farm at Ludell until 1950 when he joined the Army. Trained in Fort Sill,
 Oklahoma, he went on to serve his country in the Korean War repairing 
radios in Babenhausen, Germany. He returned to Ludell following his two 
years of service and began farming and eventually dairying with his 
brother Gerhard and family under the Holste Brothers partnership. 
Following Gerhard’s retirement from farming, Herb continued to dairy and
 farm with nephew Harlan and family. He retired in 1993 but remained 
living at his home in Ludell until his move to the Good Samaritan in 
Atwood in 2018. 
As the eighth of eleven children, Herb enjoyed his family immensely. He 
was close with his brothers, sisters, and their spouses, some who lived 
locally, and others who resided in distant states. He especially 
enjoyed extended summer visits from his brother Bob, and wife Betty, and
 his brother Herman, and wife Barb. He was blessed with 34 nieces and 
nephews who would keep in touch through mail or visits while in the 
area. 
Herb enjoyed traveling and was able to travel both throughout the states
 and into Europe and the Holy Lands. He once noted that one of his 
favorite trips was to Germany. As a single man, his travel companions 
included Johnny Dunker and Edwin Reuber as well as family members. 
Herb served in his community as a member of the COOP board and he spent 
more than 50 years on the Board of the Farmers State Bank. He also 
served as a Rawlins County Fair Board member. 
His hobbies included photography and woodworking. In his earlier years 
he loved creating slides of vacations and family events. As an 
accomplished woodworker, he built numerous pieces of furniture for his 
own use and the enjoyment of others. A particularly rewarding project 
was assisting with the altar, baptismal font, and communion rail which 
are in use at Redeemer today. He was a ready volunteer for Laborers for 
Christ when the educational wing was added to Redeemer. 
Herb enjoyed sports. As a young adult, he played softball on the Ludell 
team. Later, he followed the Atwood Buffaloes and the K-State Wildcats. 
He would often be found in the stands at the high school on Friday 
evenings watching the football or basketball games. It was especially 
important to him to attend a sporting event if a niece or nephew or 
great-niece or nephew were participating. On autumn Saturdays, Herb 
could be found faithfully watching Wildcat football from his recliner 
and was always ready to talk about the ups and downs of the game. 
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Clifton, 
Gerhard, Arthur, and Herman; sisters, Laurine Holste, Dorothy Lewis, 
Edith Wasserman, and MaryAnn Oelke; brothers-in-law, Jack Lewis and 
Gilbert Wasserman; sisters-in-law, Velma Holste, Irene Holste, Lorna 
Holste, and Doris Holste; nephew Duane Oelke; niece Traci Schmitt; 
nephew-in-law Butch Schartz; great-nephew Jonathan Ruda, and great-great
 nephews, Easton Holste and Daxton Willard. He is survived by brother 
Bob Holste and wife Betty, of Oviedo, Florida; brother-in-law Paul 
Oelke, of Hoxie, and sister-in-law Barbara Holste, of Auburn Hills, 
Michigan; as well as 32 nieces and nephews, 72 great-nieces and nephews,

Justin Timothy Franklin Lynn, 28, of New York City, New York, died on Monday, July 06, 2020 at his home in New York City.

Justin was born on October 04, 1991, in Girard, Kansas, the son of David L. Lynn, Sr. and Linda (Smith) McCulloch.&nbsp; He grew up in Russell, Kansas, and attended local schools.&nbsp; He achieved his G.E.D. and obtained an Associate’s Degree from Borough of Manhattan Community College (The City University of New York - CUNY). &nbsp;

He is survived by his mother Linda McCulloch and husband Mike McCulloch of Russell, Kansas, Kansas; brothers David Lynn Jr. of&nbsp; Russell, Kansas and Aaron McCulloch of Russell, Kansas; sisters Amanda Lynn of Salina, Kansas and Samantha McCulloch of Russell, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his father David L. Lynn, Sr. on April 15, 1991.

He was enrolled to attend Baruch College in the fall of 2020 for a degree in accounting. He always strived to be the best he could be, living life to the fullest. He never failed to let family and loved ones know he was thinking about them and that he loved them. He was always trying to bring trying to bring people together.&nbsp;

MO, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two brothers, Wayne Turley and Francis Turley.

Phyllis Jean Schuster

Longtime Goodland, KS resident Jimmie "Jim" Lee Applebee, 85, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2020, at the Topside Manor in Goodland.&nbsp; He was born on November 14, 1934, in Glen Elder, KS to Vinton (Shorty) and Ida (Lundy) Applebee.

Jim attended school in Glen Elder, graduating with the class of 1952.&nbsp; He attended Ft. Hays State his freshman year.&nbsp; Because he was at the top of the draft list, he sat out of school until January of 1955.&nbsp; He entered the Army during that time, and was stationed at Fort Orad, California and Fort Lewis, Washington.&nbsp; He spent 2 years in the Army Infantry and the 5 more years in the Army Reserves, and was discharged in 1962.

While being stationed at Ft. Lewis, Jim played football on the 9th Infantry Regiment team.&nbsp; After the service, he returned to school at Emporia State and graduated there in 1960, with a Bachelor of Science Degree.&nbsp; During the summer of 1970, he received his Masters of Science Degree from Ft. Hays State.&nbsp; While in College, Jim played football for both Emporia State and Ft. Hays State.&nbsp; Following his college career, Jim taught school and coached at Valley Falls, Sabetha, Ellis, Smith Center and Goodland.&nbsp; In 1994, Jim was inducted into the Ellis Teachers Hall of Fame.&nbsp; During that same year, Jim was awarded for Youth Service from the Goodland Chamber of Commerce.

On May 31, 1959, Jim married Marlene Michels at the Methodist Church in Hunter, KS.&nbsp; To this union, three daughters; Glenda, DeAnn and Susan were born.

Jim was a strict, but loving dad and family man.&nbsp; He loved to see his daughters together telling stories and hearing them laugh.&nbsp; His favorite family times were Thanksgiving, Christmas, Birthdays and the 4th of July.&nbsp; He looked forward to buying fireworks for the grandkids, having a BBQ and always having homemade ice cream.

He worked at J&amp;J Feeders for several years.&nbsp; Also, he enjoyed driving a truck for Short and Sons now and then.&nbsp; He and Dick had some fun stories to tell.

Jim owned a golf cart business for 25 years until his health began to fail.&nbsp; He was an avid golfer.&nbsp; He enjoyed all sports and loved attending his Grandkids ballgames. &nbsp;

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Goodland, the Goodland Elks Lodge, Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity and a past member of the Sugar Hill Golf Club.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother Vinton Jr., and an infant granddaughter Lisa Marie Dwyer.

He is survived by his wife Marlene of the home in Goodland, three daughters; Glenda (Dale) Dwyer of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, DeAnn (Marlin) Hillmer of Goodland, KS, and Susan (Kevin) Schmidt of Brewster, KS.&nbsp; He is also survived by Eight Grandchildren; James (Sara) Dwyer, Hillary Dwyer (Tyson Frihauf), Tyler (Andrea) Hillmer, Angela (Corbin) Townsend, Ryan Hillmer, Jaden, Carson and Kamdyn Schmidt; two step granddaughters; Sally (Matt) Lahm and Lori (Craig) Rosales, nine great grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Jim will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2020 at 10:30 AM MT at the United Methodist Church in Goodland with Pastor Zach Anderson officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland.

Jimmie 'Jim' Lee Applebee

Velda Valjean Grammon, daughter of Oliver and Hazel (Buttermore) 
Campbell was born November 4, 1929, in Bloomington, Nebraska, and passed
 away on July 19, 2020, at the Logan Manor, at the age of 90.

She attended school in Smith Center, Kansas, and graduated from Smith
 Center High School.&nbsp; Velda was a waitress at a café in Smith Center 
where she met Ward Keith Grammon.&nbsp; They were married on September 17, 
1953, in Smith Center, Kansas.&nbsp; To this union four children were born: 
Roger, Paul, Beverly and Larry.

The family moved to Logan in 1962.&nbsp; Velda was a book keeper for her 
husband’s business along with being a homemaker.&nbsp; She loved crocheting, 
making quilts, reading, crossword puzzles and making some of the best 
pies and apple dumplings.

She was a member of the Logan Christian Church.

Velda and Keith were fortunate to be able to celebrate 63 years of marriage together.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Keith, brothers 
Warren, Dale, Marvin and Doyt Campbell, twin brother Eldon Campbell, 
sister Leola Johnson and great grandson Ethan Hockman.

Survivors include her children, Roger, Paul and wife Debra Grammon 
all of Logan, Beverly and husband Bob Hockman of Salina, and Larry and 
wife Rose of Canon City, CO; nine grandchildren, Wayne (Valorie) 
Grammon, Greg (Shannon) Grammon, Ward Grammon, Mathew Hockman, April 
Hockman (Steven Ralph), Devin Grammon, Heather (Leslie) Lewis, Ryan 
(Dana) Grammon and Michelle Shannon; eight great-grandchildren, Kendra 
Grammon, Aaron Grammon, Janelle Grammon, Cadence Lewis, Kealan Lewis, 
Anthony Grammon, Clay Grammon and Akira Grammon; as well as two special 
nieces, Cathy Winters and Sheila (Randy) Stocker.

Cremation was planned.&nbsp; A private memorial service will be held at 
10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2020 in the Logan Christian Church with 
Pastor Troy Buss officiating.&nbsp; The services will be streamed live on the

Mary Lee “Mickey” Carpenter, 85, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2020 
at her home. She was born March 8, 1935, in Lawrence the daughter of 
William and Alice (Crane) Hadl. Mickey was united in marriage to M. John
 Carpenter on May 2, 1952 at Ottawa. He passed away September 21, 2004.

Mickey has been a resident of Great Bend since 1964, coming from 
Lawrence. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lake Barton 
ladies golf club Association,, Stoneridge County Club. She enjoyed 
playing bridge, golf, tennis, playing the organ, gardening, and bird 
watching. She also had her pilot’s license and enjoyed flying. Mickey 
was a gourmet cook, and had a cook book published.

Survivors include two daughters Chris Klima (Dale), Gail Carpenter 
(Jane) all of Great Bend; sister Darlene “Dolly” Carpenter (Robert) of 
Tulsa, OK; two grandchildren Deena Smith (Christopher) and Kelly Klima 
(Darah); five great grandchildren Brayden Smith, Riley Smith, Adelle 
Smith, Karson Klima and Demi Klima; and many nieces and nephews. She was
 preceded in death by her husband, parents and eleven brothers and 
sisters and her son-in-law Dale Klima.

Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday July 29, 2020 
with family present 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral

Mary Lee 'Mickey' Carpenter

William John “Bill” Korinek, 72, of Lyons, passed away July 25, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. 

He was born July 16, 1948 in Ellsworth, Kansas, the son of John and Dorothy Buckley Korinek. Bill has resided in Lyons since 1996, formerly of Buhler and Ellsworth. He graduated from Ellsworth High School with the class of 1966. 

Bill attended Kansas State University, received a Bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University and his Master’s degree from Friends University. He was a vocal music teacher having served at Lyons High School, Buhler High School and Ellinwood High School. Bill was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons where he served as a cantor in the choir, member of Kansas Music Educators Association, former Uniserv Vice President for NEA, and former local President for NEA for two years. He also started the Mystic Blue’s Show Choir at Ellinwood High School. 

On October 31, 1970, Bill was united in marriage with Ann M. Camarena in Salina. She survives of the home. He is also survived by his two daughters, Leanne Hollinger and husband Bryan of Lyons, and Kristi McKenzie and husband Adam of Hutchinson, KS; two sisters, Carol Fox and husband Sharon of El Dorado, KS, and Linda Austin and husband Jim of El Dorado, KS; brother-in-law, Everett Kohls of Manhattan, KS; three grandchildren, Aubrey Hall and husband Josh, Bailey Hollinger, and Holly McKenzie; and many nieces and nephews. 

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Gerard Korinek and Jason Lee Korinek; and sister, Gail Kohls. 

Funeral mass will be at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, July 30, 2020 at Holy Savior Catholic Church, Wichita with Father Isaac Coulter and Father Patrick Kotrba officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Wichita. Mary A. Humrich, long-time resident of Goodland, passed away December
 29, 2019 in Henderson, Nevada.&nbsp; She was born August 27, 1950 to Dennis 
and Celesta (Gernhart) Humrich in Goodland, Kansas.&nbsp; She graduated with 
the class of 1968 from Sherman Community High School.&nbsp;

Preceding her in death are her parents, and her life partner Kurt Engelmann.&nbsp;

She is survived by her sisters, Pat (Dennis) Owens of Henderson, NV; 
Rosie Whitman of Goodland, KS; Gladys Davisson of Concord, CA; six 
nieces and nephews, Carmen (Dennis) Bruggeman of Assaria, KS; Frank

Herbert E. Kier, 64, passed away, July 25, 2020, at his home, Larned.

He was born October 8, 1955 in Ness City, Kansas; the son of Richard 
Lee and Laberta Lee Brown.&nbsp; A Larned resident since 1988, moving from 
Norton; he was a Licensed Mental Health Technician at the Larned State 
Hospital.

Herb graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, 
Iowa.&nbsp;&nbsp; He worked in the family owned welding shop, Kiers Welding in 
Benkleman, Nebraska.&nbsp; He liked riding motorcycles and taking trips to 
Colorado and Missouri to motorcycle rallies and vacationing with 
friends. He loved getting together and shootin’ the bull and reminiscing
 with family and friends. He enjoyed working with his staff members at 
the Larned State Hospital. He enjoyed his computer and spending time 
researching and keeping in touch with friends.

Survivors include; two brothers, Kenneth and Shirley Kier, 
Clarksville, Arkansas and Robert and Karen Kier, Hershey, Nebraska; a 
sister, Judy Baney, North Platte, Nebraska; a step-mother, Mary J. Kier,
 Imperial, Nebraska; step-sister, Jennifer Kier, Madrid, Nebraska; many 
nieces and nephews; and numerous good friends.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Robert Forrest “Bob” Gantz was born May 26, 1925, and died at Ness 
County Hospital on July 23, 2020.&nbsp; He was the son of Ernest and Fayne 
Bondurant Gantz.&nbsp; Survivors are Paula Gantz Ripple and David, Ann Gantz 
Matz and Kurt, Gary and Jodi Gantz; grandchildren Shelley Ripple 
Woodworth, Jacob Ripple, Zachary Matz, Cody Matz, Wade Gantz, Colby 
Gantz, and Dalton Gantz; cousin Gordon Holloway, niece Paige Gantz 
Farrell; and five great grandchildren.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his 
wife Jan, his brother Jack and his wife Yvonne, and his nephew Scott 
Gantz.&nbsp;

Upon graduation from Ness City High School in 1943, Bob entered the 
Army Air Corps; he trained and flew as a navigator in a B-24 bomber 
unt­­­­­­il the end of World War II when he was discharged. After the 
war, he enrolled in Kansas State University as a business major, 
graduating cum laude in 1950, and returning to Ness City to join his 
mother in operating D. E. Bondurant Grain, thus continuing the business 
begun by his grandfather Daniel E. Bondurant in 1888.&nbsp; Later his brother
 Jack joined the operation, and it remains in the family today.

Bob’s passion for hunting took him on countless pheasant hunts and 
treks to hunt for deer and elk.&nbsp; He also collected old Winchesters and 
other firearms.&nbsp; Bob read voraciously throughout his life: newspapers, 
history, business news, Westerns, and all things concerning western 
history. His interest in Western Kansas settlement history was kindled 
from relationships with “old timers,” and he often visited with his 
grandfather Daniel Bondurant, Mary Beardslee, Grace Beardslee, and many 
Ness Countians, piecing together stories of early Ness County. This 
knowledge of Ness County history was the impetus for much of his wife 
Jan’s historical writing.&nbsp;

Always participating in the Ness City community, Bob’s activities and
 support ranged from sports to organizations.&nbsp; He was the second Eagle 
Scout in Ness City, then became a Boy Scout leader and long-time 
supporter. Early on Bob played softball on a city team sponsored by 
Harold Dean “Irish” Gabel; he was in Rotary and served as President; he 
was on the board of the First State Bank; he supported and promoted 
Arrowhead West, the Ness County Bank Building, the Ness City Public 
Library, the Ness County Fair, and Old Settler’s Reunions.&nbsp; In addition,
 he always remained an avid supporter of his alma mater, Kansas State 
University. Bob was a member of the Odd Fellows, The American Legion (in
 March he received his 75-year pin), the National Rifle Association, the
 Kansas State Rifle Association, the Winchester Arms Collector 
Association, the Ness County Historical Society, the Little Big Horn 
Association.

Bob was a career-long member of the Kansas Grain and Feed 
Association, serving as board member and two-term Chairman of the KGFA 
from 1959 to 1964.&nbsp; In 2007 the association honored him with the 
Sunflower Award, the Kansas grain industry’s highest honor.

A graveside service will be held at the Ness City Cemetery at 10:00 
a.m. on Tuesday, July 28.&nbsp; Viewing will be on Monday from to 2:00 p.m. 
to 9:00 p.m. with family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 
Fitzgerald Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Ness County Bank Building,

Marjorie “Margie” Augustine, 77, Hays, died Saturday, July 25, 2020 at her home.

She was born January 16, 1943 in 
Schoenchen, the daughter of Matt and Clara (Wolf) Zimmerman.&nbsp; On 
September 10, 1960 she was united in marriage to Elmer A. Augustine in 
Schoenchen, and they celebrated 56 years of marriage before he preceded 
her in death on September 27, 2016.&nbsp; She was a farmwife, a member of 
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and a volunteer at Via Christi
 Village.&nbsp; Margie enjoyed playing Bingo, cards, and going to casinos.&nbsp; 
She loved spending time and visiting with her family and friends and was
 always willing to help anybody.

Survivors include three brothers; 
Dennis Zimmerman and wife Becky of Hays, Sherman Zimmerman of Shawnee, 
and Steve Zimmerman and wife Debbie of Topeka, a sister; Elaine Schmidt 
and husband Jerry of Hays, a sister-in-law; Alvina “Tootsie” Zimmerman 
of Hays, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, her husband, two brothers; Gordon Zimmerman and Wayne Zimmerman

Dr. Willis "Bill" Lloyd Funk, 91, of Oakley, KS, died Friday, July 24, 
2020, at Citizens Medical Center, Colby. 

He was born on October 2, 1928,
 in Abilene, KS, to Adolf and Olga (Weinbrenner) Funk. Bill spent his 
youth working in his father’s creamery, graduated from Hope High School,
 and served in the United States Army from 1946-1948. He graduated from 
Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina, KS in 1952 and from the School of 
Dentistry of the University of Kansas City in 1956. 

Bill married 
Shirley Davis on June 20,1954, on a Sunday hot enough to melt the 
candles! Bill and Shirley moved to Oakley in 1956, where he practiced 
dentistry for 33 years until retiring in 1989. Dr. Funk served on the 
Logan County Hospital Board and the Oakley School Board; he was a member
 of the American Dental Association and the Kansas Dental Association. 
He was one of the first Hunter’s Safety instructors in Kansas, a Cub 
Scout Den Master, and a participant in the inaugural annual Annie Oakley
 golf tournament and in 40 of the next 43 tournaments. He was diagnosed 
with insulin dependent diabetes at age 35 and was a role model for his 
physicians due to his diligent disease management, which prevented many 
common diabetic complications. Bill was an active outdoorsman who 
enjoyed hunting pheasant, fishing, and gardening for many years. After 
he retired from an esteemed dental career, his life was filled with 
attending grandchildren’s activities, taking cruises with his wife, 
square and swing dancing, and baking countless batches of cookies. 
He was preceded in death by his parents. 
He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Oakley; children, Doug (Kathy) 
Funk, Lawrence; Terri (Chris) Albers, Oakley; Susan (David) Molstad, 
Ellis; and Kathleen (Blake) Arnberger, Colby; brother Don, Evergreen,

Dr. Willis 'Bill' Lloyd Funk

Betty Baird, 63, passed away Friday July 24, 2020, at Wheatland 
Health Care in Kingman. She was born May 2, 1957, in Great Bend the 
daughter of W.E. and Theresa (Herrman) Lewis. She married Robert Baird 
November 15, 1987 in Great Bend. He passed away September 13, 2010.

Betty has been a resident of Kingman for three years coming from 
Pratt. She was a bookkeeper for Nicholas Water Service. Betty was a 
member of American Legion Auxiliary in Pratt and Fraternal Order of 
Eagles Aerie Auxiliay and the Elks Lodge in Pratt. She enjoyed being 
outside gardening and fishing. She loved spending time with her family 
especially the grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Wes Cherry and wife Amy and Austin 
Caruthers and wife Tracy all of North Dakota; one daughter Leslie Cherry
 and fiancé Rick Harrison of Kingman; two brothers Leon Lewis and wife 
Della and Ronny Lewis all of Wichita; one sister Dorothy Neidens and 
husband Don of Great Bend; eight grandchildren Dalton, Destiny, Austin, 
Heather, Brandon, Cody, Kelby, and William and one great grandchild; 
many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She is preceded in
 death by parents, husband and two grandchildren

Memorial service will be announced at a later date by the family. 
Cremation has taken place. Memorials are requested to the Betty Baird 
Funeral fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Health Care in Kingman. She was born May 2, 1957, in Great Bend the 
daughter of W.E. and Theresa (Herrman) Lewis. She married Robert Baird 
November 15, 1987 in Great Bend. He passed away September 13, 2010.Betty has been a resident of Kingman for three years coming from 
Pratt. She was a bookkeeper for Nicholas Water Service. Betty was a 
member of American Legion Auxiliary in Pratt and Fraternal Order of 
Eagles Aerie Auxiliay and the Elks Lodge in Pratt. She enjoyed being

Oid Lee Wineland, 99, of Alton, KS passed away on Wednesday, July 22,
 2020, at the Osborne County Memorial Hospital in Osborne, KS. &nbsp;He was 
born to Clyde C. &amp; Hazel (Tucker) Wineland on October 28, 1920 
in&nbsp;Kill Creek Township of Osborne Co.,&nbsp;Kansas.

He graduated from Alton High School and furthered his education at Kansas State University with&nbsp;a Bachelor of Science Degree.

Oid served in the U. S. Army during WWII&nbsp;and later in the Reserves.&nbsp; 
During his time in the service, he was honored with a Bronze Star,&nbsp;3 
Purple Hearts and a Presidential Unit Citation. &nbsp;After his time in the 
Army, he served many years helping&nbsp;with the&nbsp;Military Honor Guard at 
Alton for numerous parades and burials.

He married Letha Thayer and to this union, 2 sons were born. &nbsp;He 
worked as a rural mail carrier for many years in the Alton area.

Oid was preceded in death by his parents &amp; his wife, Letha in 2001.

He is survived by his sons: Jim (Kimberly) Wineland of Bucyrus, KS; 
Ron (Judy) Wineland of Hutchinson, KS; 4 grandchildren &amp; 3 
great-grandchildren.

Evelyn L. Wohlford, 67, passed away Thursday July 24, 2020, at 
Sterling Village in Sterling. She was born December 9, 1952, in Tacoma, 
Washington, the daughter of Bobby and Helen (Palmer) Wohlford.

Evelyn was a resident of the Great Bend and Hoisington area for the 
past ten years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of 
Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed crafts and spending time with her family.

Survivors include three sons; James “Bryan” Spears and wife Cathy of 
Spring Hill, Florida, Travis Sinn and wife Jessi of Hoisington, and 
Kristofor Sinn of Iola; a daughter Tiffany Tyrell and husband Travis of 
Pittsburg; ten grandchildren, Mercedes, Joshua, Jadyn, Kaleigh, 
Grantley, Marla, Kassandra, Mison, Caityn, and Thomas; four great 
grandchildren, Phoenix, Elliot, Electra, and Calvin; a lifelong friend 
Carolyn “Mom” Imler of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by her 
parents, son, Richard Brewer and daughter, Tammy Young.

Visitation will be 3:00 p.m., Thursday July 30, 2020, with Memorial 
Service beginning at 4:00 p.m., all at The Church of Jesus Christ of
