Russell resident Dennis L. Riggs passed away Wednesday, July 
22, 2020, at the Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS at the age of 70.

Dennis was born October 22, 1949, in Wichita the son of Lawrence and Helen (Osgood) Riggs.&nbsp;

He was united in marriage to Susan M. Scheopner on July 2, 1983, in Colby, KS.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on November 29, 1999.

Survivors include his two sons, Tim and wife Monica of Wichita and 
Alex and wife Erin of Russell; two brothers, Charles “Bo” of Hartford, 
CT and Doug of Bushton, KS; and 5 grandchildren, Tenley, Brecken and 
Blaise Riggs, Tobey Brockmann and Logan Riggs.

Cremation was planned.&nbsp; A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July
 28, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 
Phillipsburg, with Father George Chalbhagam officiating.&nbsp; The funeral 
services will be streamed live on Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel FaceBook 
page.

Harlan E. Downing, 61, of Colby, died Thursday, July 23, 2020, at 
Citizens Medical Center, Colby. He was born September 22, 1958, in 
Colby, to Jerry and Lorraine (Miller) Downing. Harlan graduated from 
Atwood High School in 1976 and then studied HVAC and electric at the 
Salina Area Technical College. In 1979 Harlan started farming and did 
this job proudly until his death. Harlan married Mylinda Larsen on 
November 27, 1983, in Colby. 
He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Downing; father-in-law, Dean Larsen and good friend Terry Wendell. 
Harlan is survived by his wife Mylinda; sons, Michael (Crystal) Downing 
and Brian (Callie) Downing; grandchildren, Lovan and Abigail Downing; 
mother, Lorraine Downing; brother, Keith (MaryAnn) Downing; sister, 
Karren Gatlin and mother-in-law, Patricia Larsen.

Harlan E. Downing

John Roberts, 90, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2020 at the Kansas Soldiers Home, Halsey Hall in Fort Dodge, Kansas.&nbsp;

John was born on October 26, 1929, in Stockton, Kansas, to Millie and
 Leon Roberts. He attended school in Naponee, Nebraska, and later 
obtained his GED. John proudly served in the United States Air Force 
during the Korean War. While stationed in Germany, he met the love of 
his life, Anneleise, and they were married. To this union six children 
were born. While his children grew, John enjoyed their involvement with 
horses where he dedicated his time as a 4-H horse project leader. For 
many years, John owned his own plumbing and heating/AC business where he
 served his home town, Orleans, Nebraska, and the surrounding area. For 
the past 25 years, John resided at Fort Dodge where he eagerly 
volunteered in many capacities at the fort and enjoyed his time playing 
cards with other residents. As a veteran, John also managed&nbsp;the 
VFW&nbsp;Buddy Poppy&nbsp;Program. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1520 
in Dodge City. John was also an active member of St. Andrews Catholic 
Church in Wright, Kansas.&nbsp;

John was blessed with a wealth of family. He is survived by his wife 
of 68 years, Anneleise of Fort Dodge; sons, Johnnie Roberts and wife, 
Vicki of Paradise, Kansas; Donald Roberts and wife, Shelia of 
Phillipsburg, Kansas; daughters Anna Ledbetter and husband, Rick of 
Walland, Tennessee; Helen Rains and husband, Cecil of Amarillo, Texas; 
Sue England and husband, Scott of Ogallala, Nebraska; Pamela Goracke and
 husband, Jim of Bucklin, Kansas; 18 grandchildren and 34 great 
grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Neil Roberts of 
Orleans, Nebraska; and a sister, Anita Van Allen of Mobile, Alabama. He 
was preceded in death by parents Leon and Millie Roberts; and 2 brothers
 and 4 sisters.&nbsp;

John was a devoted husband, father, and veteran, but most importantly served the lord through all these capacities.&nbsp;

Vigil service will be at 7:00 pm Thursday, July 30, 2020 at St. 
Andrew Catholic Church, Wright.&nbsp; Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am Friday
 at the church with Fr. Ted Stoecklein presiding.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow
 at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Ft. Dodge with full military rites 
by the United States Air Force and American Legion District 8.&nbsp; There 
will be no public viewing, cremation has taken place.&nbsp; Friends may sign 
the register from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Thursday at Ziegler Funeral 
Chapel, Dodge City.

John Roberts

Francis Hey Jr., 81, passed away Thursday July 23, 2020 at the Hodgeman County Long Term Care Center, Jetmore.

He was born September 26, 1938 in Hodgeman County, the son of Francis and Clara (Schwab) Hey Sr.

A lifetime area resident he was a farmer and a rancher. He was a 
member of the United Methodist Church, Jetmore. He graduated from Dodge 
City Community College and attended Fort Hays State University.

On September 23, 1961 he married Jenny Lu Sinclair at Wichita University; she survives.

Other Survivors include: two daughters, Susan (Lynn) Nuss, Jetmore, 
Sally (Kelly) Klausmeyer, Hays; two sisters, Gerry Stuckey, Jetmore, 
Norma Jean Stegman, Dodge City; five grandchildren, Kyle Nuss, Zachary 
Nuss, David Nuss, Adam Klausmeyer, and Ethan Klausmeyer; numerous nieces
 and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth Hey; six 
sisters, &nbsp;Lorraine Hey, Loretta Hiller, Betty Sinclair, Lucy Craghead, 
Mary Pitts, and Luella Fose.

Funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 27, 2020 at the United

Ronnie Lester Musil, age 59, of Goodland, died of liver cancer Friday, May 22, 2020, at his son’s home in Lawrence, Kansas.&nbsp;

He was born October 26, 1960 to Ronnie D. and Carol Kay (Dizmang) Musil in Burlington, Colorado.&nbsp;

Ronnie grew up mostly in Edson and attended school at Edson, Brewster
 and Harrison Flats.&nbsp; He worked as a farmer and enjoyed fishing, 
gardening, hunting, taxidermy, and sports.&nbsp; He was a member of a bowling
 league at the Goodland Bowladium, and also played baseball.&nbsp; His first 
wife was Starla Amack and second was Donna Buethe.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his brother, John Musil.&nbsp;

Survivors include his parents; sister, Julie (James) McCauley of 
Goodland; children, Zackary (Denise) Musil of Garden City, KS; Daniel 
Musil of Garden City, KS; Jami Musil of Hays, KS; Dustin (Sandy) Musil 
of Lawrence, KS; Amanda (Tyler Marcotte) Musil of Hays, KS; 11 
grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and

Scott McGillivray, age 60, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2020.&nbsp; He 
was born February 14, 1960 to Garland and Marsha (Lohr) McGillivray in 
Liberal, Kansas.&nbsp; Scott grew up and attended school in Liberal.&nbsp; He 
attended the University of Kansas. &nbsp;

Scott worked in customer service and sales and he loved spending time with his family and friends.&nbsp;

He is survived by his mother, Marsha of Goodland; brothers, Greg 
McGillivray of Franklin, Wisconsin and Tod McGillivray of Soldotna,

Jesse Joe Espinosa, 70, passed away July 22, 2020, at Hays Medical 
Center, Hays. He was born on June 2, 1950, at Great Bend, to Jose &amp; 
Natalia (Ramirez) Espinosa. He married Barbara Clements on October 2, 
1982, at Great Bend. She survives.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Jess was a construction worker. He 
was a member of the Eagles, Bikers of Central Kansas, and Big Bend Lake.
 He liked fishing and watching westerns but especially enjoyed being 
with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include, his wife Barbara Espinosa of the home; two sons, 
James Pattinson and girlfriend Denise, and Joseph Pattinson and 
girlfriend Jennifer, all of Hutch; two daughters, Anita Stringos and 
husband George of Arlington, and Kathy Pattinson of Wichita; six 
brothers, Lawrence Espinosa, Joe Espinosa, Bobby Espinosa, Oscar 
Espinosa, and Butch Espinosa, all of Great Bend, and Gilbert Espinosa of
 Springfield, Mo; two sisters, Lali Simõn of Manhattan, and Jane 
Stejskal of Texas; 17 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and many 
nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; 
and two sons, Jerrod Espinosa and Joe Chay Espinosa.

Goldie L. Brunow

Stanley Raymond Weeks, 77, of Sharon Springs, KS, lost his fight with cancer on July 13, 2020.&nbsp;

Stan entered this world on March 26, 1943, in Laconia, NH, born to Leslie and Blanche Weeks. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, receiving special commendations in marksmanship.

His spirit of adventure led him across the country, where he eventually settled in western Kansas. During his lifetime, his jobs were as varied as his interests. He flew planes, managed a restaurant, drove truck, and more. He loved putting miles on his Harley, cooking, working in his garage and keeping up with his grandkids. He never met a stranger and loved drinking coffee and having long conversations with friends and family.&nbsp;

He loved his family and was a devoted Papa. He never hesitated to travel many miles to attend the various school events of his grandchildren – or just cook them blueberry muffins for breakfast.

Stan was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Blanche. He has eight beloved grandchildren, including Ethan, Sam and Will Fry, Atticus Weeks, Beau and Kylie Warden and Sarah and Seth Holt. His surviving siblings include Jean Weeks, Brenda Moore and Phil Weeks.&nbsp;

During his lifetime, his jobs were as varied as his interests. He flew planes, managed a restaurant, drove truck, and more. He never met a stranger and loved drinking coffee and having long conversations with friends and family.&nbsp;He loved his family and was a devoted Papa. James Henry Schroeder, 91, of Grinnell, died Sunday, July 19, 2020, at 
the Logan County Hospital, Oakley. 

He was born March 21, 1929, in 
Washington, MO, to Everet and Louise (Schwarz) Schroeder. He attended 
Angelus Grade School and Grinnell High School. James married Bunny 
Wessel on August 2, 1949. James and Bunny lived on a farm near Angelus 
and moved to Grinnell after he retired. He enjoyed woodworking, 
gardening and tinkering. James was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of
 Columbus. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Bruce in 1964; sisters, 
Doris Campen and Betty Ann Kruse and brother Kenny Schroeder. 
He is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Bunny; children, Melvin

 She was born on August 9, 1937, to Albert and Edna Bruce.&nbsp; She married

and retired from Clara Barton Hospital.

Charles A. Turner, age 70, of Elkhart, Kansas, died Tuesday, July 21, 
2020, at his home. He was born March 10, 1950, in Elkhart, Kansas, the 
son of Orville “Hugh” and Thelma (Roll) Turner. 
Charlie was born and raised in Elkhart where he attended and played 
football for Elkhart High School. After graduating High School, Charlie
 attended Garden City Community College to play football. During his 
time there, he received his Associates of Sports Medicine. After 
leaving Garden City, Charlie moved to Lubbock, Texas to pursue his 
passion at The Sunset School of Preaching. Charlie would talk about The
 Bible to just about anyone who was willing to sit and listen. In 1979,
 Charlie met Laurie Leigh Smith and they were married in 1980. Together
 they moved to Colorado Springs to raise a family and later they 
divorced. In 2008, Charlie married Amy Lamb Wooten, during this time he
 and Amy were promoted to Pops and Nana, the proud grandparents of 11. 
After his divorce from Amy, Charlie relocated to Elkhart, Kansas, where 
he worked for the Senior Center. 
Charlie is survived by sons; Charlie Turner and wife Amy of Lubbock, 
Texas, Caleb Turner and wife Bethany of Littleton, Colorado, Isaac 
Turner of England, Ethan Roberts of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and David 
Roberts of Colorado Springs, Colorado, daughters; Jenny Rose Meadows of

Donald Roy Parde, 69, passed away July 20, 2020 at University of Kansas Health Systems Pawnee Valley Campus, Larned.

He was born August 28, 1950 in Simla, Colorado to Virgil Oscar and Evelyn Clara Ruth Fienne Parde.

Moving from Belleville, he was an area resident since 2007 and he was
 of the Catholic faith. He worked as an HVAC Technician. He was a member
 of the Belleville Fire Department for twenty-five years, an active cub 
scout leader, coached his son’s baseball teams, and enjoyed gardening, 
tinkering on things, and listening to music. He loved spending time with
 his grandchildren.

On January 1, 1975 he married Donna Rose Heskett at Belleville; she survives.

Other survivors include: five sons, Christian Parde, Concordia, 
Joshua (Nicol) Parde, Belleville, Matthew (Nichol Humburg) Parde, 
Argonia, Lucas Parde, Great Bend, Michael Parde, Larned; two sisters, 
Maxine Allsman, Palm Springs, California, Carol Williams, Exeter, 
Nebraska; six grandchildren, Zachary Parde, Mattea Parde, Caleb Parde, 
Jacqalyn Parde, Sidney Parde, Max Parde; and numerous nieces and 
nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Virgil Parde.

home in Ellinwood. He was born on September 23, 1974, in Great Bend,

A lifetime Barton and Stafford county resident, Matthew was a truck 
driver for the Venture Corporation in Great Bend. He was of the 
Christian faith and enjoyed guns, video games and Nascar races. He was a
 proud father of his son, and uncle to his nieces and nephews.

Survivors include, his mother, Eleanor L. Fertig of St. John; his 
son, David J. DeBusk of Scott City; two sisters, Christy DeBusk of Great
 Bend, and Amanda Feil (Christopher) of Salina; a brother, Ivor DeBusk 
of Dodge City; and three nephews and three nieces. He was preceded in 
death by his father, Raymond E. DeBusk and step mother, Linda K. DeBusk;
 and step father, Jim Fertig.

There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place. Graveside

He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Leoti, Kansas.

On May 5, 1985, he married Lenora Hernandez in Tribune, Kansas.  She passed away on July 23, 2012, in Wellington, Kansas.

He attended a one-room country school for four years, after which the family moved to Green, Kansas, where he graduated from Green High School in 1948. He attended one year of college at The University of Kansas, and then taught school for two years prior to being drafting into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

During the Korean Conflict he spent one year at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and one year in Korea, returning from Korea in May of 1953 at the rank of Staff Sergeant.

After his discharge from the U.S. Army he married Margaret Blad of Agenda, Kansas, and the two of them taught school for one year in Republic County, Kansas, prior to Elmo continuing his college education. In May, 1956 he graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration from Kansas State University in Manhattan. While at Kansas State University he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. He then went to Washburn University Law School in Topeka, Kansas, graduating there in January, 1959.

After graduation from Law School he joined the law firm of L.F. Cushenberry in Oberlin, Kansas, and practiced with Mr. Cushenberry until his retirement in 1972, after which he practiced law under the firm name of Lund Law Firm Chartered until his retirement in 2012.

While in Oberlin he was a member of the Oberlin Lions Club and of the Oberlin Legion Post #70, of which he was a past commander. He also served on the board of directors of the High Plains Mental Health Center for several years. He was a member of the Oberlin United Methodist Church and an associate member of the Hays United Methodist Church.

In the fall of 2000 Elmo and Margaret Lund moved to Hays, Kansas, where Margaret could receive additional physical therapy, but he still maintained his law practice in Oberlin, Kansas, on a part-time basis.

Born of this marriage were three children, David (Debra) Lund, Wichita, Kansas, Janell Shorman, Hays, Kansas and Robert Lund, Hays, Kansas. He also had four grandchildren, Michael Shorman, Mission, Kansas, Matthew Shorman, Hays, Kansas, Nicole Lund, Overland Park, Kansas and Jordan Lund, Wichita, Kansas.

Elmo contracted the Corona virus shortly before his death and family members were exposed. The family will schedule Celebration of his Life at a later date when it is safe for friends and family to gather. Richard Strecker, 81, died Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at Founders Crest in Wichita.

He was born January 6, 1939, at Spearville, the son of Henry Joseph 
and Josephine Caroline (Lutz) Strecker.&nbsp; He was a lifetime area 
resident, a graduate of Windthorst High School and received his 
Bachelors Degree from St. Mary of the Plains College, Dodge City. He 
served in the Army National Guard from 1961 to 1967 attaining the rank 
of Staff Sergeant.&nbsp; He was an accountant for Southwest Distributing in 
Dodge City for 39 years until retiring in January of 2000.

He was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and 3rd
 Degree member of Knights of Columbus Council 2955 both in Dodge City.&nbsp; 
He was also a former board member of Windthorst Heritage, Inc. as well 
as a longtime board member of the Sacred Heart Catholic School 
Endowment.&nbsp; He enjoyed volunteering at Manor of the Plains in Dodge 
City.

On May 26, 1962, he married Martha Ackerman at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Windthorst.

Survivors include: his wife of 58 years, Martha; 2 sons, Dave and 
wife Roni, Minneola and Steve and wife Janna, Garden City; 2 daughters, 
Jan Stauth and husband Shannon, Hays and Karen Moeder and husband Scot,

Norton resident Wenda Underwood, beloved daughter of Kenneth and Katherine S. (Murphy) Taylor was born December 2, 1940, in Norton, KS and went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 9, 2020, at the Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS, at the age of 79.

Wenda grew up on the family dairy farm just east of Norton and attended Norton community schools.

On October 11, 1958, Jim Underwood and Wenda E. Taylor were united in marriage in Norton.&nbsp; They made their home there and raised 3 daughters, Patty, Theresa and Connie.&nbsp; She was a devoted wife to Jim for 61 years.

Wenda was for the most part a homemaker, but did keep busy, working at the Norton High School and Lucky Strike Grill.&nbsp; She enjoyed spending time at Jim’s Conoco Station where she could visit with the customers and helping Jim tend to their large garden.&nbsp; Wenda enjoyed spending time with her friends while doing each other’s hair, loving on her many cats that they had over the years and collecting spoons she would find on their trips.&nbsp; She was a member of the Norton Squarenders Square Dance Club and the First United Methodist Church in Norton.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Jim of Norton; her three daughters, Patty Fitzmaurice and husband David of Belgrade, MO, Theresa D. Underwood of Paola, KS and Connie Lynn Ellis and husband Glen of Ashland, Illinois; sister, Carol Whitney and husband Robert of Olathe, KS; brother Patrick and wife Mary Ann of Norton; 4 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Vicki Linn Unruh, age 68, died at her home in Ness City, Kansas on 
Sunday, July 19, 2020.&nbsp; She was born on August 31, 1951 in Meade, Kansas
 the daughter of Owen and Frances (Freeburg) McDonald.

She is survived by her husband, Lanny Unruh, of 47 years, whom she married on August 4, 1972 in Great Bend, Kansas.

Vicki was the secretary and treasurer for Rich’s Roustabout which she
 and her husband owned and operated.&nbsp; She was well known throughout the 
community and will be missed by all who knew her.

Vicki is also survived by her daughter, Lana Seib, and her husband, 
Anson; her son, Ryan Unruh, and his wife, Abby; two grandchildren, 
Jackson Seib and Mason Unruh, all of Ness City.&nbsp; She is also survived by
 her brother, Leslie McDonald, and his wife, Margot, of West Pittston, 
Pennsylvania; and her sister, Karen Heibert, and her husband, Dave, of 
Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 24, 2020, 10:00 a.m. at

Chancey “Red” Floyd Perry Jr.; (1925-2020); age 94; husband, father, 
grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, retired resident of El 
Dorado, Kansas; passed away on July 17, 2020. He was a WWII Navy Veteran
 and retired from Occidental Petroleum (Cities Services), where he 
worked for 34 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 81 in 
El Dorado. 
He was born September 12, 1925 in Jennings, Oklahoma to Chancey (Dutch) and Flora (Ogden) Perry. 
He married Betty A. Arnel on December 13, 1948, in Russell, Kansas. They 
were married for 69 years. Chancey has gone to be with his love, friend 
and helpmate. 
Chancey loved to boat, fish and hunt. He really liked catching crappie. 
He enjoyed playing Mexican dominoes with family and friends. 
His daughter always knew he was someone you could depend on. As his 
grandson expressed it, Red loved his family deeply, but was cautious 
about expressing it. He showed his love by his constant presence and 
actions. He will be deeply missed by his family. 
Preceded in death by his wife Betty A. Perry, parents Dutch and Flora Perry, one sister, Marybelle Robinson. 
Chancey is survived by his daughter Twila (Fred) Carver, grandchildren 
Michelle Carson and Anthony Carver, three great-grandchildren and one

She was born August 8, 1945 in Dodge City, KS, the daughter of 
Alphons Francis and Anna Mary Beller Nau.&nbsp; A longtime area resident, she
 was a retired cook at the Larned State Hospital.

She was of the Catholic faith and enjoyed family and traveling.
