Emmett J. McGinn, 75, La Crosse, Kansas, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020, at his home.

Emmett was born July 18, 1945, in Denver, Colorado, the son of John 
and Catherine (Yeager) McGinn. He was a resident of Rush County, Kansas,
 for 18 years, moving from Colorado. He was a 1963 graduate of Adams 
City High School, in Commerce City, Colorado. Following graduation, he 
enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to Beeville, Texas before 
duty on Kodiak Island, Alaska.

Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, he later met 
and married Geraldine “Gerri” Schaffer on Sept. 6, 1969 at St. Catherine
 of Sienna Catholic Church, Denver, Colorado. They made Denver their 
home and had two children, Carlie and Greg. He found work as a 
purchasing and supply agent with the Colorado Army National Guard in the
 USPFO at Camp George West in Golden, Colorado, Dec. 1, 1971, continuing
 his service to this country. He retired with 42 years of service to the
 U.S. Armed Services.

He worked for the city of Thornton, Colorado as a purchasing and 
supply agent retiring from the city in 2002. While in Thornton, he 
participated in sports with his kids as a coach and also a soccer league
 referee. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus at Immaculate Heart
 of Mary Church in Northglenn, Colorado. He became active in the U.S. 
Naval Sea Cadet Corps., achieving the rank of ensign when his son, Greg,
 became involved with the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets.

In 2002, after his retirement, he and Gerri moved to LaCrosse, Kansas
 to enjoy a rural lifestyle. He became a member of St. Joseph Catholic 
Church, and St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish Council, both of 
Liebenthal, Kansas. He was a member of American Legion Post 33, La 
Crosse, Kansas.

Survivors include: his wife, Gerri, of La Crosse, Kansas; daughter, 
Carlie Van Winkle, Cheyenne, Wyoming; son, Greg McGinn (Kim), Denver, 
Colorado; three grandchildren, Amelia Rose Van Winkle, John Michael 
McGinn and Allyson Ann McGinn; three sisters, Loretta Capra (Rudy), 
Wheat Ridge, Colorado; Frances Stephens, Parker, Colorado; and Lorna 
Baldwin (Ed), of Canute, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jim McGinn; sister, Catherine Lloyd; and his son-in-law, Steve Van Winkle.

Church visitation will be Friday, Sept. 11, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. to 
10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas. A rosary 
will be said at 10:00 a.m.

Funeral mass will follow visitation and rosary at 10:30 a.m. with Fr.
 Stephen Dabanka officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, 
Liebenthal, Kansas.

Social distancing is recommended. Masks are also recommended. Due to Covid 19, if you have a fever, cough, or are not

Emmett J. McGinn

Tim Eugene Hunt, 73, of North Platte, NE passed away on September 2, 
2020, at Great Plains Health. He was born on June 13, 1947, to Raleigh F. 
and Lilly W. (Lofkwist) Hunt at North Platte Memorial Hospital. He had 
Polio at 8 months old. Hunting, fishing (many master anglers) an extreme
 Nebraska Cornhusker fan, excellent musician (North Platte Barber 
Shoppers, High School Band and church with Kevin Latimer.)Tim was 
baptized in First Christian Church in North Platte, NE. Tim was a member
 of the United Methodist Church in Wellfleet, NE.&nbsp;

Tim was an excellent horseshoe pitcher, his brother taught him to 
swim by holding him under water until Tim came up fighting (swimming). 
He learned to ride a surf board that many others could not do, Tim even 
taught his dog to ride with him. He also enjoyed bowling. Tim was also a
 lifetime member of the North Platte Elks Club.

He worked various custodial jobs including, Environmental Services at
 Great Plains Regional Hospital for over ten years. Tim loved family 
reunions and many, many friends.

Tim was preceded in death by his mother and father, sister in law, Denise Kaye Sanders Hunt,

He is survived by brother, Terry (Vicky) of Bertrand, Nebraska,

Tim Eugene Hunt

Joan E. Molleker, 72, passed away September 4, 2020 at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

She was born May 5, 1948 in St. Francis, KS. the daughter of Amil Earnest and Jessie Marguerite Morlan Stunkel.

An area resident since May of 1980, she was a legal secretary for 
Smith, Burnett and Larson. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic
 Church, Larned Music Club, PVCH Auxiliary and a volunteer at the Budget
 Shop. She was an active church member where she played the organ and 
piano. She was also an avid reader and very well informed on a multiple 
array of subjects including religion and she loved her grandchildren and
 her newest great granddaughter very much.&nbsp;

On Feb 28, 1986 she married Jacques Molleker in Larned; He survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Scott (Sherry) Upson, Larned, 
KS, Blake (Jonna) Upson, Syracuse, KS, Eric (Tanya) Molleker, Valley 
Center, KS; two daughters, Jackie (Steve) Ehrlich, Woodbridge, VA, 
Tiffany (Jeff) Burris, Larned, KS; two brothers, Larry Stunkel, 
Hutchinson, KS and Royce Stunkel, Broken Arrow, OK; thirteen 
grandchildren, Corrie Upson, Connor Upson, Cadee Upson, Cammy Upson,

Joan E. Molleker

Glenn Schniepp, age 93, died on September 4, 2020 at the Cedar 
Village Care Center in Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on November 4, 
1926 in Pauline, Kansas the son of Carl and Viola (Ficken) Schniepp. 
When he was 3 months old, they moved to Riverside, a community in Ness 
County in a Model T Ford.&nbsp;

When he was 5 years old, his family moved to a farm near Bazine where
 he resided for 89 years. He graduated from Bazine High School in 1945. 
He started to work for his brother, Cecil digging basements all over 
western Kansas. They had a territory from Bazine to Burlington, 
Colorado. Eventually, he and his brother Bob bought their own backhoes. 
This developed into Schniepp and Sons Construction, doing all kinds of 
concrete work. He also kept a farm operation going. One of the 
highlights of his life was when he was a teenager, he helped build the 
“Christ Pilot Me Hill.” A few years ago, he and his son, Charles redid 
the hill with large stone posts which he quarried.

On June 3, 1951, he married Phyllis Dreasher. They celebrated 69 
years together. Four sons were born into this home. Glenn and Phyllis 
sang for many funerals. He was a member of a Praise Team that sang. That
 was a night, once a week, that he looked forward to. He was a member of
 the Wet Walnut Valley Watershed for many years. He was a member of the 
United Methodist Church in Bazine, where he held offices and sang in the
 choir.

He was a very loving husband and father. He will be missed very much.
 He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Schniepp of Bazine; &nbsp;4 sons, Larry 
(Belinda) Schniepp of Shenandoah, Iowa, Terry (Colleen) Schniepp, Marlin
 (Billie) Schniepp all of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, Charles Schniepp of 
Bazine; Kelle Schniepp, his favorite nurse of Ransom; a brother, Robert 
Schniepp of Madison, Wisconsin; 8 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 
and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 
brother, and 2 grandchildren.

Graveside service and burial will be on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, 
10:00 A.M., at the Ness City Cemetery, Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; Friends may

Glenn Schniepp

Alice Maudine Lantz, 93, Otis, Kansas, died Friday, September 4, 2020, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Maudine was born April 8, 1927, in Abilene, Kansas, the daughter of 
Eugene Walker and Allie E. (Probasco) Steele.&nbsp; She was a 27 year 
resident of Rush County, Kansas, moving from California.&nbsp; &nbsp;A 1945 
graduate of Dickinson County High School, Chapman, Kansas, she was a 
homemaker and farm wife.&nbsp; Maudine also served as the librarian for the 
Clyde Public Library, Clyde, Kansas, and the Otis Community Library, 
Otis, Kansas.&nbsp; She also served on both library boards.

She was a former member of the VFW Auxiliary, and the UMW (United 
Methodist Women), both of Otis, Kansas.&nbsp; Maudine loved to sing, singing 
in the church choir, and quartet.&nbsp; Her love of singing and music was 
instilled in her when she was a young girl listening to her father play 
the fiddle at barn dances.

On August 3, 1957, she married Kenneth O. Lantz at Abilene, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death November 22, 2016.&nbsp;

Survivors include:&nbsp; two sons, Retired Colonel Dwight Engle (Annette),
 Napa, Idaho, and Alan Engle (Lanie), Manhattan, Kansas; three 
daughters, Yvonne Kuhl (Larry), Napa, Idaho, Evelyn Sohm, (Steve), Otis,
 Kansas, and Nola Newcomer, Kanopolis, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; and 24 
great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, John 
Engle; one brother, Gene Steele; and five sisters, Myrtle Blackwelder, 
Eunice Witwer, Neva Jamis, Helen Foerschler, and Evelyn Krause.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 9, 2020, from 5:00 P.M. to 
7:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the 
family receiving friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Graveside service will be at Union Cemetery, Abilene, Kansas.&nbsp; 
Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Abilene, Kansas.&nbsp; Because of the 
current challenges the world is facing at the present time, the 
funeral service and interment will be private, immediate family only.

 </figure>Alice Maudine Lantz, 93, Otis, Kansas, died Friday, September 4, 2020, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.Maudine was born April 8, 1927, in Abilene, Kansas, the daughter of 
Eugene Walker and Allie E. (Probasco) Steele.&nbsp; She was a 27 year 
resident of Rush County, Kansas, moving from California.&nbsp; &nbsp;A 1945 
graduate of Dickinson County High School, Chapman, Kansas, she was a 
homemaker and farm wife.&nbsp; Maudine also served as the librarian for the 
Clyde Public Library, Clyde, Kansas, and the Otis Community Library, 
Otis, Kansas.&nbsp; She also served on both library boards.She was a former member of the VFW Auxiliary, and the UMW (United 
Methodist Women), both of Otis, Kansas.&nbsp; Maudine loved to sing, singing 
in the church choir, and quartet.&nbsp; Her love of singing and music was 
instilled in her when she was a young girl listening to her father play 
the fiddle at barn dances.On August 3, 1957, she married Kenneth O. Lantz at Abilene, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death November 22, 2016.&nbsp;Survivors include:&nbsp; two sons, Retired Colonel Dwight Engle (Annette),
 Napa, Idaho, and Alan Engle (Lanie), Manhattan, Kansas; three 
daughters, Yvonne Kuhl (Larry), Napa, Idaho, Evelyn Sohm, (Steve), Otis,
 Kansas, and Nola Newcomer, Kanopolis, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; and 24 
great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, John 
Engle; one brother, Gene Steele; and five sisters, Myrtle Blackwelder, 
Eunice Witwer, Neva Jamis, Helen Foerschler, and Evelyn Krause.Visitation will be Wednesday, September 9, 2020, from 5:00 P.M. to 
7:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the

Florence Ruth Gideon, 84, Hays, died Sunday, September 6, 2020 at HaysMed.

She was born September 30, 1935 in 
Great Bend, Kansas the daughter of Raymond Fritz and Ruby Rebecca (Koch)
 Eggers.&nbsp; In 1953 she graduated from Ellinwood High School.&nbsp; On August 
20, 1953 she was united in marriage to Fray Oland Gideon in Ellinwood, 
and they celebrated over 66 years of marriage before he preceded her in 
death on March 2, 2020.&nbsp; She was a cook at the Garden City Junior High 
School, worked at Travenol, and with her husband Fray, managed several 
hotels, where she was also the housekeeper.&nbsp; She was a member of the 
First Baptist Church in Hays, enjoyed working puzzle books, and loved 
spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren while 
managing the hotels.

Survivors include a son; Keith Gideon 
and wife Denise of Rossville, a daughter; Darla Froelich and husband Van
 of Walker, six grandchildren; Stephanie Avery and husband Damian, Amy 
Robinson and husband Donnie, Mike Gideon and wife Ronnie, Kegann Gideon,
 Chans Gideon, and Tiffany Hammerschmidt and husband Chad, 11 great 
grandchildren, and a sister; Rebecca Lopez and husband Robert of 
Appomattox, VA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fray, and a great grandson Dalton Heard.

Florence Ruth Gideon

Phillipsburg resident Roscoe R. Matteson passed away Saturday, 
September 5, 2020 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in 
Phillipsburg at the age of 99.

Roscoe was born September 5, 1921 in Phillips County, KS the son of 
Milton and Louisa (Abbott) Matteson.&nbsp; He was an Army WWII Veteran.

Survivors include his son, Ronald Matteson of rural Phillipsburg; two
 daughters, Jane Krug of Garden City and Doris Rauhut of Wichita; sister
 Norma Johnson of Phillipsburg; 8 grandchildren; and 19 great 
grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 9, 
2020 in the United Methodist Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Blake

Roscoe R. Matteson 

Dale Lee Olson, 89, a 1949 graduate of Decatur Community High School, 
died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020, at Prairie Senior Living Complex in Colby. 
He was born March 13, 1931, on the family homestead in rural Herndon in 
Rawlins County, the son of Robert L. and Hattie (Schmidt) Olson. He 
attended Plainview Rural School and was confirmed in the Herndon 
Covenant Church. 
He attended Kansas State University, where he earned a Bachelor of 
Science in Agriculture in 1953. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four
 years followed by four years in the Reserves, attaining the rank of 
Airman First Class. He moved to Washington State in 1957, where he was a
 soil scientist in several locations for the Department of Agriculture 
until retiring in 1993 at Pasco, Wash. 
He enjoyed skiing, reading, fishing and square dancing and was awarded a
 Bachelor of Square Dancing from the American Square-Dancing Society in 
May 1985. 
He moved to Colby in 2011 and lived at Fairview Estates Retirement Center until moving to the Prairie Senior Living Complex. 
Survivors include a brother, Robert W. Olson, Celina, Texas, and a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Olson, Herndon. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Keith Olson; a 
sister, Maxine (Bill) Peebles, and a sister-in-law, Sally Olson. 
A graveside service will be held at a later date at the Oberlin 
Cemetery. Memorials have been established to Prairie Senior Living

Ruth A. Winters passed away Monday,&nbsp; August 31, &nbsp;2020 at her home in Russell, KS. 
 She was born January 25, 1949 in Stockton, KS, the daughter of 
Lorraine Edward and Eunice (Maddox) Williams. &nbsp;Ruth married William 
Winters in Osborne, KS and to this union five children were born, 
Correna, Robert, Angela, Michael and Michele.&nbsp; They separated when the 
twins were two months old and later divorced.&nbsp; Ruth raised all five of 
her kids on her own.&nbsp; Ruth was a hard worker, she worked as a waitress 
and convenience store manager until she was forced to retire after a 
fall in 2013.&nbsp; Once retiring she was able to enjoy her eighteen 
grandchildren and spoil her twenty-four great grandchildren. 
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Rita, brothers 
Robert, Roger, Rick, Ron, Art and Ray and a granddaughter Jackie 
Kuhlmann. She is survived by her five children, Correna (Ray)
 Swaney, Robert (Kim) Winters all of Stockton, Angela (Bobby) Kuhlmann, 
Michael Winters all of Russell, Michele (Michael) Williams of SunTan 
Valley, AZ; a brother Roy (Kristie) Williams of Plainville, 18

Ruth A. Winters

Cliff LaMar Summers returned with honor to our loving Heavenly Father
 on the morning of September 5, 2020, after a long and courageous battle
 with Inclusion Body Myositis. Cliff was born September 17, 1948, in 
Idaho Falls, Idaho, to LaMar and Cleo (Johnson) Summers. Men wanted to 
be like him, women wanted him, but ultimately Janell Swagerty stole his 
heart. They were united in marriage on February 4, 1968, in Hugoton, 
Kansas. In October 1972, they were sealed for time and all eternity in 
the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day 
Saints. Janell was his sweetheart. They built a beautiful life together,
 worked through hard times, good times and grew closer to one another. 
They look forward to spending eternity together.

Cliff joined the United States Navy in November 1967, during the 
Vietnam conflict. He proudly served his country aboard the USS Brister, 
USS Samuel Gompers, and USS Ernest G. Small. He was stationed in San 
Diego, California and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Cliff was a member of 
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served in various 
callings including Bishop, High Council, and Temple Worker just to name a
 few. He was always serving and trying to lighten the burdens of others.
 He loved the Savior and always tried to follow his example.

He was a very devoted father. Always making it to his children’s 
activities. He was the unofficial referee of GBHS football 87-89 and 
93-96. Sporting his own uniform and making the “correct calls” from the 
stands. He and Janell were involved in the Panther Booster Club and 
served as co-presidents at one time.

Working in the oil and gas industry for 48 years afforded him many 
friendships from all over. He was a past member of the Society of 
Petroleum Engineers, American Petroleum Institute, and Lions Club. To
 most, he was known as Cliffie, but his favorite title was that of Papa.
 A name he proudly honored. He adored his 17 grandchildren and they all 
knew that they were loved by him. Daxton, Cale, Ryan, Chance, Sydney, 
Shiloh, Caden, Reiss, Sloane, Bo, Kimber, Hunter, Koltin, Madison, Jack,
 Sammy, and Jensen.

Here’s to one amazing guy who was always fully present, freely 
sharing all that he had and forever focused on others. Tough to lose 
such a friend as this and thankfully, in Christ there are no final 
goodbyes. Survivors include, wife of the home; two sons; Shane 
Summers (Angie) of Salina, KS and Dustin Summers (Briannie) of 
Darlington, ID; three daughters, Stephanie Summers of Lehi, Utah, 
Liberty Miller (Scott) of American Fork, UT and Traci Fleming (Nate) of 
Great Bend, KS; seventeen wonderful grandchildren; mother and 
step-father Leo and Cleo Amy of Howe, ID; three brothers, Allan Summers 
(Debbie) of Blackfoot, ID, Dee Amy (Juliette) of Howe, ID and Kelly Amy 
(Cheryl) of Howe, ID; one sister, Sherry Smith (Dean) of Bancroft, ID. 
He is preceded in passing by his father, LaMar Summers, and son-in-law, 
Daniel Sanford.

He will be greatly missed for he was greatly loved.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday September 9, 2020, at 
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Great Bend, with 
military honors conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Bishop Peter 
Solie will be presiding. Interment will be at a later date in Howe, ID. 
Visitation will be 4:00 – 9:00 p.m. Tuesday September 8, with the family
 receiving friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home.

Cliff LaMar Summers

Clayton Lee Sprires, 82, died August 21, 2020, at Clara Barton 
Hospital, Hoisington. He was born April 24, 1938, in Hoisington, the son
 of Cordrey and Maudie E. (Anglin) Spires. Clayton graduated from 
Hoisington High School in 1956. He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the 
United States Navy from 1956 to 1960.

A longtime Hoisington resident, Clayton worked in the oil field for 
many years for both Boger Brothers Drilling and Shirer Well Service. He 
was also a former policeman, postman, and most recently he was a bus

In June of 1962, he married Sandra Sowles, they divorced 12 years 
later. He then married Linda F. Smith on June 22, 1973, in Garden City, 
Kansas. She preceded him in death on September 27, 2016.

Survivors include; six children, Machelle Mujica of Garden City, 
Shelly Bownes of Hoisington, Lorrie High of Washington, Pennslyvania, 
Bonnie Brungardt of Hoisington, Cindy Anderson of Hoisington, and 
Clayton “Lee” Spires, Jr. of Wichita; a brother, William “Bill” Spires 
of Centennial, Colorado, and a sister, Shirley Juby of Gillette, 
Wyoming; 18 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and seven siblings, 
Briace Spires, Nadine Beeman, Melba Maggard, Berniece Whitaker, Twilla 
Brack, LaVern Spires, and Basil Jantz.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, with family to greet to friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m.,Wednesday, August 26, 2020, at 
Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Gary Clark presiding.

Hoisington High School in 1956. He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the 
United States Navy from 1956 to 1960.A longtime Hoisington resident, Clayton worked in the oil field for 
many years for both Boger Brothers Drilling and Shirer Well Service. He 
was also a former policeman, postman, and most recently he was a bus

Alec Paul “Putz” Hrabe passed away suddenly on Thursday, September 3, 
2020 in Rooks County, at the age of 57. 

Alec was born to Doyle and 
Dorothy (Thyfault) Hrabe on April 23, 1963 at the Hays Hospital in Hays,
 Kansas. He was united in marriage to Vicky (Rockford) Hrabe on June 11,
 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Alec had three children: Brock, Jeremy, and 
Jordan.
 Putz was a life-long resident of Stockton. He graduated from 
Stockton High School with the class of 1982. He then farmed and worked 
in maintenance for the Plainville High School. He served as a 
firefighter and for several years was fire chief. If he wasn’t working 
or putting out fires, he enjoyed spending time in his garage tinkering, 
chasing coyotes or storms, and bird hunting. Putz loved his family 
including his dogs: Spot, Smudge, and Sally Mae, and cat Sherlock.
 He is survived by his wife, Vicky Hrabe of the home; children, Brock
 (Debbie) Kolar of Woodston, Jeremy Hrabe of Stockton, and Jordan 
(Michael) Carpenter of Stockton; siblings, Gina Muir of Stockton and 
Chris (Jean) Hrabe of Salina, KS; and seven grandchildren, Cheston, 
Brook, Kyler, Dayton, Serenity, Bentley, and Haddie.

Jerry R. Newman, 56, La Crosse, Kansas, died Friday, September 4, 2020, at his home.

Jerry was born October 5, 1963, in Sikeston, Missouri, the son of William and Louise (Cecil) Newman.&nbsp; He was a resident of Rush County, Kansas, for 3 ½ years, moving from Pontiac, Illinois. &nbsp; He was a laborer in the oil industry.

Jerry enjoyed fishing and watching football.

On November 4, 1994, he married Sheila Lester at Morris, Illinois. &nbsp;

Survivors include:&nbsp; his wife, Sheila Newman, La Crosse, Kansas; one son, Jerry Newman II (fiancée, Tressidy Barenberg), Pontiac, Illinois; one daughter, Brandi Ostrom (Jerred), La Crosse, Kansas; three grandchildren, Triniti Ostrom, Tristan Ostrom, and Braxton Lee Newman who is on the way; three brothers, Jim “Bubba” Newman, Billy Newman, and Mike Newman; and two sisters, Brenda Sue Alexander, and Debbie Jones.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Larry “Dale” Newman, and Gary Newman.

Josephine Frances Dauber Schulte was born March 3, 1923, in Hays, KS,
 and died at the age of 97 on August 29, 2020. She spent her childhood 
near Bunker Hill, KS, where her parents farmed and ranched. She attended
 Cedar Creek, a one room elementary school, and graduated from Bunker 
Hill High School. She attended Fort Hays State College and taught in 
rural schools in the Russell area and then went on to earn a BS degree 
in Home Economics from Fort Hays State in 1948. She later taught 
Clothing at Dodge City Senior High School. She was also a couture 
seamstress and used her skills to make many tailored clothing items and 
special occasion dresses.

Josephine met the love of her life, Louis Schulte, at a wedding 
dance, and they were married June 14, 1949, making their home outside 
Norton, KS. Together they raised five children, ran a farming and 
ranching operation, and were active in St. Francis of Assisi Catholic 
Church and the Norton community. Jo also belonged to American 
Association of University Women and Delta Kappa Gamma. For over 35 
years, Jo was a substitute teacher in the Norton Community Schools.

After Louis’s death in 1993, Jo moved to Hays, Kansas and was active 
in Friends of the Library, Meals on Wheels, and Big Creek Quilt Guild. 
At St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Jo was involved in both Ladies 
Guild and the catechumen program, where she enjoyed teaching church 
history.&nbsp; Because of her talent and generosity, countless people have 
benefited from receiving hand sewn quilts and gifts of needlework. Jo 
enjoyed reading and instilled that love in generations of her family.

In recent years, she made her home in Overland Park, living with 
family. During that time, Jo and her family received excellent support 
from caregivers, nurses, home health aides, therapists, chaplains, and 
social workers from Catholic Communities Hospice and Phoenix Home Health
 as well as the eucharistic ministry of St. Pius X Church. Her family is
 grateful for the care and concern she received.

She is survived by her sister, Rosanna Gleason, Kinsley KS; her 
children: Paula Neuer (Fred), Shawnee, KS; Luanne Schulte (Matt 
Anderson), San Francisco, CA; Jo Jean Schulte (David Johnson), Overland 
Park, KS; Clare Gustin (Brent), Hays, KS; and Maury Schulte, Overland 
Park, KS; grandchildren: Eric Neuer (Melinie), Olathe, KS, Chris Neuer 
(Gabrianna), Lake Quivera, KS, Anne Hayter (Doran), Platte City, KS, 
Keith Gustin (Sara Nicole), Hays, KS, Sarah Jo Gustin, Kansas City, KS, 
Austin Johnson, Loveland, CO, and David Johnson, Fort Collins, CO; great
 grandchildren: Delaney and Avery Neuer; Fritz, Felix and Franklin 
Neuer; Clare Hayter; Levi Gustin; and Zayden Johnson; many nieces and

She was predeceased by her husband, Louis; her brother, Joseph Jr. 
and wife Kathleen; her sister, Edna Dauber Schulte and husband Elmer

Josephine Frances Dauber Schulte

Phyllis Jean Sheldon, 75, passed away on September 3, 2020, at the 
Cedar Village Care Center in Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on 
December 7, 1944, in Dighton, Kansas, to Harold and Jennie (Stiawalt) 
Riepe.

Phyllis attend cosmetology school in Hutchinson after graduating from
 Ness City High School in 1962.&nbsp; She worked as a hair stylist in Ransom 
and Ness City for 40 years.&nbsp; She was a member of the United Methodist 
Church and the Frank Stull Post #152 American Legion Auxiliary, both of 
Ness City.&nbsp; She married Jerry Leikam on January 18, 1964.&nbsp; Together they
 raised two daughters.&nbsp; She later married Max Sheldon on March 28th, 
1981, in Ransom, Kansas.

Survivors include husband, Max Sheldon of Ness City; stepson, Mike 
Sheldon and wife Leslie of Murray, Utah; daughter Jo Ann Hashenberger, 
husband Brian Hashenberger of Natoma, their three children Danny Ellis 
and wife Cambria (Eickhoff) of Natoma, Tera Hashenberger of Natoma, and 
Justin Hashenberger of Ness City, Kansas; daughter Dee Bauer, husband 
Brady Bauer of Ness City, their four children Josh Crombie and wife 
Lauren (Pfannenstiel) of Ness City, Brittany Bauer of Ness City, Dalton 
Bauer, and wife Madison (Wallgren), of Ness City, William Bauer of Ness 
City, and sister-in-law LaVone Hoss of Ness City. Phyllis was loved very
 much by her five great grandchildren.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; brother Cecil Richards; sister Donna Dee Riepe; and sister Darlene Butts.

December 7, 1944, in Dighton, Kansas, to Harold and Jennie (Stiawalt) 
Riepe.Phyllis attend cosmetology school in Hutchinson after graduating from
 Ness City High School in 1962.&nbsp; She worked as a hair stylist in Ransom 
and Ness City for 40 years.&nbsp; She was a member of the United Methodist 
Church and the Frank Stull Post #152 American Legion Auxiliary, both of 
Ness City.&nbsp; She married Jerry Leikam on January 18, 1964.&nbsp; Together they
 raised two daughters.&nbsp; She later married Max Sheldon on March 28th, 
1981, in Ransom, Kansas.Survivors include husband, Max Sheldon of Ness City; stepson, Mike 
Sheldon and wife Leslie of Murray, Utah; daughter Jo Ann Hashenberger, 
husband Brian Hashenberger of Natoma, their three children Danny Ellis 
and wife Cambria (Eickhoff) of Natoma, Tera Hashenberger of Natoma, and 
Justin Hashenberger of Ness City, Kansas; daughter Dee Bauer, husband 
Brady Bauer of Ness City, their four children Josh Crombie and wife 
Lauren (Pfannenstiel) of Ness City, Brittany Bauer of Ness City, Dalton 
Bauer, and wife Madison (Wallgren), of Ness City, William Bauer of Ness 
City, and sister-in-law LaVone Hoss of Ness City. Phyllis was loved very

Phyllis Jean Sheldon

Paulette M. Sander, age 84, of Hays, Kansas, former Victoria resident, died Saturday, August 29, 2020, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born April 29, 1936, at Victoria, Kansas to Dionysius F. “Dan” and Catherine (Bach) Dreiling.&nbsp; She married Norman L. Sander on November 12, 1956, at Victoria, Kansas.

She was the Office Manager/School Secretary at Victoria Grade School for number years and was bookkeeper at R &amp; S Oilfield Services for 13 years.&nbsp; She also worked at Woolworth’s in Hays and was a seamstress at Aaron’s Wear.&nbsp; She grew up in Victoria and was a 1955 graduate of Victoria High School.&nbsp; She lived in Hays and Gorham until they built the home at Victoria in 1965.&nbsp; In 2010, they sold their home and traveled in their motorhome until moving to Knoxville, Tennessee in 2014.&nbsp; They moved back to Kansas in 2018, and settled in Hays.&nbsp; Paulette enjoyed traveling, camping, boating, fishing, cooking and gardening. &nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Norman L. Sander Sr. of the home; one son, Norman Sander Jr, and wife, Sherry, Nashville, TN; one daughter, Debbie Leickteig and husband, Dan, Greeley, KS; three grandchildren, Trent Karlin, Clayton Murray, Aaron Sander; one great grandchild, Adison Karlin; four brothers, Dan Dreiling and wife, Elaine, Topeka, KS; Frank Dreiling and wife, Kathy, Kansas City, KS; Lloyd Dreiling and wife, Eileen, Kansas City, KS; Roy Dreiling and wife, Linda, Kansas City, MO; two sisters, Luella Bowman, Eldorado, KS; Cathy Roth and husband, Tom, Atlanta, GA.

W. Dennis Elder, 68, Bison, Kansas, died Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Dennis was born September 4, 1951, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Leonard D. and N. JoAnne (Hall) Elder.&nbsp; He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. &nbsp; A 1969 graduate of Bison Rural High School, Bison, Kansas, he was a farmer.&nbsp;

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Church Choir, the Bison Community Museum, and a 43 year member of Rural Fire District 5, where he served as Fire Chief for many years, all of Bison, Kansas.&nbsp; Dennis served as the mayor of Bison for many years.&nbsp; He was also a 4-H leader for 30 years, a member of the Rush County Historical Society, Walnut City Masonic Lodge #215, MOPAC Historical Society, and the KOSMO (Kansas Organization for Space Modeling).

On August 12, 1972, he married Edith “Edie” Eitel at the United Methodist Church, Bison, Kansas. &nbsp;

Survivors include:&nbsp; his wife, Edith “Edie” Elder, Bison, Kansas; one son, William Elder (Sylvia), Kansas City, Missouri; two daughters, Joanna McAlister (Greg), St. John, Kansas, and Emily Little (Matt), De Soto, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Garrett McAlister, Lilly McAlister, Addison McAlister, Rosa Elder, Calixta Elder, Kadee Little, and Whitlee Little; his mother, N. JoAnne Elder, La Crosse, Kansas; and two sisters, Kathy Holopirek (Rick), Bison, Kansas, and Lori Collins (Charles), Omaha, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his father; and an infant sister, Karen Elder.

W. Dennis Elder

Bernard Joseph Huelsmann, 92, of Angelus Kansas died peacefully 
Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at Sheridan County Health Complex Long Term
 Care, Hoxie, Kansas. 

 He was born September 4, 1927, in Thomas County, 
Kansas to Henry and Mary Louise (Baalmann) Huelsmann. Bernie was a 
lifelong farmer with a love for the land surpassed only by the love for 
his family and his strong Catholic faith. 

At the age of 22, Bernie met a 
young woman at a skating rink in Oakley, Kansas and the following year 
on August 16, 1950 he married that young lady, Bonnie Fischer, at St. 
Joseph’s Church in Oakley, Kansas.  Six children were born to this 
union. Bernie and Bonnie were blessed to celebrate 70 years of marriage 
this past August. Bernie was an active member of St. Paul’s Catholic 
Church in Angelus, where he was a Eucharistic minister. He was a third 
degree member of the Knights of Columbus and received his 75 year pin in
 August. He served on the South Randel Township Board and participated 
in the American Agriculture Movement, traveling with the tractorcade to 
Washington D.C. in 1979. 

As a young man, he enjoyed playing baseball for 
the Angelus team. In his spare time in later years, he enjoyed traveling
 and fishing especially with his grandkids. Many Friday nights were 
spent in the bleachers cheering on his grandchildren in their various 
activities. Time spent with family was important too, with many games of
 pitch played by both Fischer and Huelsmann families. Bernie was deeply 
loved, greatly respected, and will be forever missed. 
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frank and John 
and sisters; Luetta Robben, Floralee Rumback, Mildred Thummel and Lyola 
Moos. 
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Bonnie; children ,Diane 
Solomon, Linda (Ron) Lager, Greg (Patty) Huelsman, Phyllis (Randy) 
Tholen, Peggy Huelsman (Kevin Zerr) and Carlene (Mitch) Gillespie; 
siblings Edwin (Irene) Huelsman, Donna Marie Smith, Donna Lee McGuire, 
Aloysius Huelsman and Charles Huelsmann; 18 grandchildren and 30 great 
grandchildren. 
Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Monday, September 7, 2020, at St. Paul’s 
Catholic Church, Angelus; with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass is

Betty J. Martell, 85, Hays, died Tuesday, September 1, 2020, at Memorial Hospital in Abilene.

She was born June 7, 1935, in La Crosse, 
Kansas, the daughter of Stephan and Anna (Kreutzer) Herrman.&nbsp; On January 
12, 1954, she was united in marriage to Kendall E. Martell in LaCrosse, 
and they were married 41 years before he preceded her in death on March 
8, 1995.&nbsp; Betty worked at Hadley Hospital as a Certified Nursing 
Assistant and was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.&nbsp;
 She was a volunteer with the Senior Companion program for many years, 
loved to read, and made cross-stitch quilts for each of her children and
 grandchildren. &nbsp;

Survivors include a son; Brad Martell 
and wife Lillian of Bettendorf, IA, a daughter; Debbie Bielefeld and 
husband Gene of Abilene, a brother; Stephen Herrman and wife Caroleen of
 Hayward, CA, a sister; Frances Holopirek of Timken, a brother-in-law; 
Lawrence Munsch of Cheyenne Wells, CO, a sister-in-law; Eunice Dinkel of

Pamala Sue “Pam” Erickson, age 60, of Russell, Kansas, died Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born October 12, 1959, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Ronald E. “Ron” and Alfreda J. “Freda” (Foos) Broetzmann.&nbsp; She married Ronald Blau and they later separated she then married Ken Erickson on November 12, 2016 in Russell, Kansas.

She was the director of the Physicians Clinic at the Russell Regional Hospital before she retired.&nbsp; She was a past director of the First Call for Help in Hays.&nbsp; She was a licensed&nbsp;practical nurse and was a graduate of North Central Kansas Technical College.&nbsp; She also received a Bachelor’s Degree in human resource management and a Master’s Degree in&nbsp; adult educations.&nbsp; Pam grew up in Garden City and was a 1977 graduate of Goodland High School.&nbsp; She loved to be with her family, grandchildren and enjoyed her pets. &nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Ken Erickson, of the home; one son, Josh Blau, Overland Park, KS; one daughter, Chelsee Hoffman and husband, Daniel, Russell, KS; two stepsons, Jason Erickson, Liberty Lake, WA; Jordan Erickson and wife, Michelle, Los Balnon, CA; one sister, Lori Hertel and husband, Stan, Hays, KS; mother-in-law, Margaret Stedman, Oberlin, KS; two grandchildren, Bailee and Landry Hoffman; and one step-grandchild, Elias Erickson. &nbsp;

 </figure>Pamala Sue “Pam” Erickson, age 60, of Russell, Kansas, died Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born October 12, 1959, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Ronald E. “Ron” and Alfreda J. “Freda” (Foos) Broetzmann.&nbsp; She married Ronald Blau and they later separated she then married Ken Erickson on November 12, 2016 in Russell, Kansas.She was the director of the Physicians Clinic at the Russell Regional Hospital before she retired.&nbsp; She was a past director of the First Call for Help in Hays.&nbsp; She was a licensed&nbsp;practical nurse and was a graduate of North Central Kansas Technical College.&nbsp; She also received a Bachelor’s Degree in human resource management and a Master’s Degree in&nbsp; adult educations.&nbsp; Pam grew up in Garden City and was a 1977 graduate of Goodland High School.&nbsp; She loved to be with her family, grandchildren and enjoyed her pets. &nbsp;Survivors include her husband, Ken Erickson, of the home; one son, Josh Blau, Overland Park, KS; one daughter, Chelsee Hoffman and husband, Daniel, Russell, KS; two stepsons, Jason Erickson, Liberty Lake, WA; Jordan Erickson and wife, Michelle, Los Balnon, CA; one sister, Lori Hertel and husband, Stan, Hays, KS; mother-in-law, Margaret Stedman, Oberlin, KS; two grandchildren, Bailee and Landry Hoffman; and one step-grandchild, Elias Erickson. &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Ronald Craig Broetzman; one nephew, Steven Lee Hertel; one niece, Ana Hertel and father-in-law, Phil Erickson.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Pamala Sue 'Pam' Erickson

With profound sadness, we celebrate the life lived by LaVonne, our 
loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all whose lives she 
touched.&nbsp; She left us on September 1, 2020 with family members at her 
side at Topside Manor.&nbsp; She was in her 80th year.

LaVonne was born in Ft. Morgan, CO on July 28, 1940 to parents, David
 and Pauline Sagel.&nbsp; She was the baby of the family with 3 older sisters
 and a brother.&nbsp; She was educated in Ft. Morgan, CO through high school 
and attended Colorado State University for 2 years where she was a 
member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.

She met the love of her life, Everett Lage, Brush, CO and they 
celebrated their marriage union on August 18, 1961.&nbsp; They began their 
married life farming in Morgan County, CO and welcomed their beloved 
children Shannon and Mark into their family. In 1966, they moved to 
Goodland, KS where she and Everett worked at the Great Western Sugar 
Company.&nbsp;&nbsp; In Goodland, LaVonne worked as a travel agent for Arrow 
Travel and as a grain accountant with Goodland Co-op and Mueller Grain.&nbsp;
 In Sharon Springs, LaVonne worked and retired from the Wallace County 
Co-op.&nbsp;

LaVonne was a wonderful wife, mother and Nana.&nbsp; She kept an 
immaculate house and had a gift for decorating and party planning.&nbsp; She 
also enjoyed spending time outdoors tending to her yard and flowers. She
 was a founding member of PEO Chapter ID and treasured time with her 
sisters.&nbsp; She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church; a social 
member of the Sugar Hills Country Club and involved with the Glendale 
Livewires 4-H Organization.

She is survived by her children and grandchildren, Shannon (Melvin) 
Nemechek of &nbsp;Goodland, KS; Mark (Christi) Lage of Overland Park, KS; 
&nbsp;Connor Simpson and Mya Nemechek of Goodland, KS and Sophie Lage of 
Overland Park, KS.&nbsp; She is also survived by her two sisters, Eloise 
(Conrad) Hanson of Goodland, KS and Virginia McCracken of Brush, CO.

LaVonne is preceded in death by her parents, David and Pauline Sagle;
 her husband, Everett Lage; her sister, Renee Young and brother, Leonard
 Sagel.&nbsp;

LaVonne Pauline (Sagel) Lage

Hazel Alberta Edwards, 63, passed away September 2, 2020, at the 
University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus. She was born on 
July 29, 1957, at Hill City to Cleophas &amp; Alberta (Bratton) Edwards.

Coming from Hill City in 1980, Hazel was a Great Bend resident. She 
was a department manager at Walmart for 34 years. She was one of Jehovah
 Witnesses and liked to travel for international bible conventions. She 
enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, and working on her house and in 
her yard. She especially loved being with her family.&nbsp;She enjoyed 
working on construction of Kingdom Halls and participating in the 
ministry work.

Survivors include, her sister, Sharlene Smith and her husband Lewis 
of Great Bend; one niece, Jaclyn Smith; four nephews, Steve Smith, 
Travis Smith, David Smith, and Kevin Smith; one great niece; and one 
great nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three 
brothers.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place and services will be announced at a later date.
