
Gilbert Phlieger, 86, died on Saturday, October 10, 2020, at Kearny
County Hospital in Lakin. He was born on September 1, 1934, at Quinter
the son of Mike & Rosina (Waldman) Phlieger. He married Joan J.
Loevenstein on September 2, 1961, at Collyer. She died on July 24, 1983.
He later married Margaret “Peg” Thayer on May 24, 1986, at Garden City.
She died on January 24, 2015.
Gilbert grew up on the family farm near Quinter and graduated from
Quinter High School in 1952. He served in the United States Army as a
Medic stationed in Germany from 1958 to 1960 and in the Army Reserves
from 1960 to 1964. After his discharge he worked for Quinter Co-op
before going to work as a Salesman for White Farm Equipment in Sedalia,
Missouri. In 1983 he moved to Versatile Farm Equipment and in 1988 he
went to Krause Plow and retired from there in 2000. He moved to Garden
City in 1986 and to Lakin in 2008 while also enjoying spending time at
his homes in Harlingen, Texas and Cole Camp, Missouri on the Lake of the
Ozarks. He was a very kind person and enjoyed collecting die cast
scale tractors as well as watching all types of sports. Gilbert was a
lifelong Catholic and belonged to St Michael Catholic Church in Collyer
until 1985, St Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City from 1985 until
2008 and St Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin after moving there.
Survivors include his 2 Step-Sons- Mike Thayer of Lakin and Sean Thayer
of Garden City, Step-Daughter- Nan Thayer Kartsonis of Tucson, Arizona, 2
Sisters- Annetta Phlieger and Loretta Turner both of Quinter, 6
Step-Grandchildren- Jeffrey Thayer, Andy Thayer, Gilbert Thayer, Allison
Thayer Scherrer, Mackenzie Thayer and Cooper Thayer and 7
Step-Great-Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, both Wives, 2 Sisters- Renilda
Fitzpatrick and Armella Phlieger and 2 Brothers- Norbert Phlieger and
Alvin Phlieger.
Private Funeral Mass will be at St Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin with
Rev Peter Tran as Celebrant. Graveside Service will be at 12:30 PM
Friday, October 23, 2020 in Valley View Cemetery at Garden City with
Military honors by Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard and American
Legion District 8 Honor Guard. Friends may call from Noon to 8:00 PM
Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin. Memorials are suggested to
High Plains Retirement Village in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
