Janet Ruth Neighbors, 95, passed away September 10, 2020, at Great 
Bend Health &amp; Rehab. She was born on February 3, 1925, at Waco, 
Texas, to Paul &amp; Blanche Holland. She married Ervin Melvin Neighbors
 on September 25, 1950, at Great Bend.&nbsp; He died July 24, 2010.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Janet was a member of the Eagles 
Lodge, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She 
enjoyed bowling and was a long time devoted Wal-Mart employee.

Surviving are four daughters, including, Sheila Smith of Great Bend, 
Sherrie Holmes of Winfield, and Tamra Downs and husband Robert of 
Augusta; many grandchildren; and many great grandchildren. She was 
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ervin Neighbors; and a 
daughter, Rickie Kay Weighous.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Graveside 
service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 14, 2020, at 
Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend, with Pastor Aaron Withrow 
presiding. Memorials are suggested to the Donor’s Choice, in care of 
Bryant Funeral Home.

Larry James Buczinski, 72, passed away September 10, 2020, at Rolling
 Hills Health &amp; Rehab, Wichita. He was born on September 30, 1947, 
at Wichita, to Lawrence &amp; June (Smith) Buczinski. He married Marilyn
 Kay Soeken on January 10, 1971, at Claflin. She survives.

A lifetime Barton county resident, Larry lived in Great Bend. He was a
 police officer for several years in both Great Bend and Ellinwood and 
an EMT in Ellinwood. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Great
 Bend, American Legion Post #180, the American Legion Riders and the 
Lions Club. He was a United States Army veteran, serving two tours in 
Vietnam and one tour in Germany and Kosovo. He was a family man and many
 considered him a Jack of all trades, as he especially enjoyed helping 
others.

Survivors include, his wife, Marilyn Buczinski of the home; a son, 
John Buczinski and wife Maranda of Emporia; a daughter, Jessica Runnels 
and husband Paul of Larned; a brother, Daniel Buczinski and wife Diana 
of Goddard; three sisters, Diana Rightmire and husband Warren, and 
Geneva Spotz, all of Kansas City, Mo., and Mary Richardson of Wichita; 
thirteen grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in
 death by his parents; a brother, Charles Buczinski; and a sister, 
Christina Gonzalez.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 
16, 2020, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 
5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, 
September 17, 2020, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, with

John Byers O'Loughlin

Barbara Mary Swanson, 81, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2020, at Lenoir Woods in Columbia, Missouri.

She was born June 29, 1939, in Park, Kansas, the daughter of the late 
John C. and Agnes Frances (Kuhn) Stegman. She was the youngest of their 
seven children, and she was known in the family as “Babe.”

She was united in marriage on May 28, 1960, in Goodland, Kansas, to John
 Robert Swanson who preceded her in death on February 11, 2005. Together
 they traveled extensively throughout Europe and lived in Beirut, 
Lebanon for six months.

Barbara grew up in Goodland, Kansas, and graduated from Goodland High 
School. She worked as a teacher, principal and school administrator. She
 received her Bachelor’s degree from Marymount College near Salina, 
Kansas, and she began teaching at Baldwin Elementary School in Baldwin 
City, Kansas. She later worked at Sacred Heart Parish in Columbia, 
before taking a teaching position at Immaculate Conception School in 
Jefferson City.

Barbara spent the remainder of her career working for the Diocese of 
Jefferson City, where she began as a fourth grade teacher at Immaculate 
Conception School. She always said fourth grade was her favorite grade.

She received her Master’s degree from Lincoln University in Jefferson 
City, and she advanced in her career to become principal at Immaculate 
Conception, eventually advancing to become associate superintendent of 
schools for the Jefferson City Diocese and briefly serving as interim 
superintendent.

She was very proud of her work in the Catholic schools, which included 
helping one area parish open a brand new school. She was committed to 
education, and she continued to work after her retirement as a volunteer
 tutor for local children. She was extremely active with Immaculate 
Conception Catholic Church community throughout her years in Jefferson 
City. She volunteered in many different roles and on a great number of 
projects within the parish throughout her life.

She also worked in retirement as a docent at the Governor’s Mansion, 
giving tours to school groups and enjoying learning more herself about 
the history of the building and the state. She also volunteered her time
 as an ombudsman through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior 
Services. She met with residents at nursing homes in Jefferson City, 
assisting them in improving their care.

Barbara also loved to travel, both before and after her retirement. 
During her lifetime, she set foot on five of the seven continents, 
including visits to China, Russia, India, Egypt and Argentina.

Barbara was a proud mother and grandmother, who helped introduce a love 
of books and reading to her children and grandchildren, who will 
probably always remember their Grammy best for the time she spent 
reading to them. She was always reading a new book and enjoyed being a 
part of different book clubs throughout her life. She treasured her 
friends, and she was always looking for ways she could help and 
contribute.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Neil Swanson and Nikole 
Baron, Overland Park; her daughter and son-in-law, Sonya and Bill 
Carney, Columbia; five grandchildren, John Cole Galbraith, Lily MaryAnn 
Swanson, John Jack Truman Swanson, Abigail Rose Swanson, and Chloe Rue 
Swanson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her siblings, Viola, Albert, Dorothy, Richard, Herbert, and Caroline.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association and to the 
Missouri River Regional Library, where Barbara was a frequent patron and

Timothy L. Bridges, 36, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, September 06, 2020, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Tim was born on February 29, 1984, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Ivan F. and Loretta M. (Croslin) Bridges.  He lived in Hays, Great Bend, Hutchinson, Hoisington and Russell, Kansas, and attended Russell Schools.  He was united in marriage to Catherine M. Handle on September 16, 2006, in Hays, Kansas.  He enjoyed playing tennis, basketball, taking long walks and spending time with family.

Surviving family include his with Cathy from the home; daughter Waunetta Bridges and son Timothy Bridges, Jr. both of Russell; stepson Gage Brady of Plainville, Kansas; brothers Jonathon Bridges, David Bridges and Mike Bridges.

He was preceded in death by his parents and Grandmother Lecresha Croslin.

Darrell Keith Houston, 82, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at his
 home in Dorrance, KS. 

 He was born on September 30, 1937 in Hays, KS to
 Ernest W. and Edith (Cerrow) Houston. Darrell graduated from Plainville
 High School with the class of 1956.  He was united in marriage to 
Virginia Glaze on September 3, 1960 in Plainville, KS.  Darrell worked 
for John O. Farmer, Inc. in Russell as an oilfield pumper until his 
retirement in 1994.


Darrell was a member of the Dorrance First Lutheran Church. He 
enjoyed fishing and camping. He could usually be found in his shop 
tinkering with projects, whether it be woodworking or welding.


Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Virginia of the home; sons, 
Donald (Lavina) Houston of Dorrance and Dale Houston of Ellsworth; 
daughters, Bev Wooley of Dorrance and Deanna (Mike) Sunseri of Raymore, 
MO; grandchildren, Athan Schindler, Jill Washmon, Lauren Erdman, Emily 
Sunseri, and Jennifer Wooley; and eight grandchildren.

Firma (Kreutzer) Pfannenstiel, age 80, of WaKeeney, KS, passed away September 8, 2020, at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital, Long Term Care facility, WaKeeney. She was born January 11, 1940 to&nbsp;Isidor and Lidwina Younker) Kreutzer at the family home 10 miles north and 2 miles west of Hays. She attended Hyacinth grade school, and Hays High School until she had to leave school to take care of her mother.

Firma was united in marriage to Darrell “Jim” Pfannenstiel on April 12, 1958 in Hays, KS. They enjoyed 54 years together until Jim’s passing in 2012. In her younger years, she worked as a waitress, went on to work at Duckwall’s in WaKeeney until retirement, and then operated Beaver Express. Firma’s passion was always music, and she was self-taught on the accordion, piano, and guitar. She sang very well, she could yodel, and played in the Gabe Denning Polka band. She enjoyed watching baseball, NASCAR, and was a talented seamstress. Firma loved her iced tea. She was a devout member of Christ the King Church, and a charter member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles lodge #3774.

Firma is survived by her son Calvin of WaKeeney; daughter Brenda of Wichita; 7 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both parents; her husband; daughter Debbie; daughter-in-law Cindi; 3 brothers; and 5 sisters.

A visitation will be from 8:30AM to 9:30AM Friday, September 11, 2020, at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney. A rosary will then be held, with the funeral service directly following at 10:00AM. Burial will take place at Christ the King Cemetery, WaKeeney.

Thelma R. Noblitt, 80, passed away September 8, 2020, at her home in 
Great Bend. She was born on January 23, 1940, at Chelsea, Okla., to 
Veltie &amp; Desie (Chandler) Beebe. She married Dan Noblitt on April 
18, 1958, at Norwalk, Calif. He died May 4, 2013.

Coming from Downey, California in 1972, Thelma was a Great Bend 
resident. She was the hotel manager for Super 8 and a member of First 
Assembly of God Church in Great Bend. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, 
reading and baking.

Maneth (Trevor), Kimber Wedel (Tyler), Daniel Noblitt (Stacy Beiker), 
and Jeremy King (Jacque); and twelve great grandchildren. She was 
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dan Noblitt; three 
brothers, Lee Beebe, Jim Beebe, and Hank Beebe; and a sister, Lois 
Merrit.

There will be no services as cremation has taken place. Memorials are

Great Bend. She was born on January 23, 1940, at Chelsea, Okla., to 
Veltie &amp; Desie (Chandler) Beebe. She married Dan Noblitt on April 
18, 1958, at Norwalk, Calif. He died May 4, 2013.Coming from Downey, California in 1972, Thelma was a Great Bend 
resident. She was the hotel manager for Super 8 and a member of First 
Assembly of God Church in Great Bend. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, 
reading and baking.Survivors include, a son, Robert Noblitt and wife Angela, and a

Betty Elaine Messenger, 87, died on Saturday September 5, 2020 at her

the Dighton area before moving to Garden City in 1979 where she pursued a
 degree in nursing. She worked at St Catherine Hospital as a Registered
 Nurse until her retirement in 1998. She was a member of the First 
United Methodist Church, volunteered at Garden Valley Retirement Village
 and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed regularly playing
 cards with friends, participating in water aerobics at the YMCA, 
reading, cultivating her garden and keeping in touch with other nurses, 
classmates and friends. 
She is survived by her 3 Children- Evan Shane (Tori) Messenger of 
Columbia, Missouri, Tanya Leigh Thayer of Lander, Wyoming and Tara Lynne
 (Mark) Boaldin of Garden City, 10 Grandchildren and 13 
Great-Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband,
 Brother- Col. JD Smith, Sister- Violet Lamb, Grandson- Trevor Messenger
 and Niece- Betty Irene Lamb. 
Graveside Service will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 19 at Scott

James A. "Sonny" Knouf

James E. Thorns, 86 of Hays, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at Hays Medical Center.

James was born May 20, 1934, in Big Springs, Texas, to the Reverend John and Margaret Thorns.

His family has lived in Hays twice, the first time was from 1944 to 1952 when his father was minister at the Presbyterian Church.&nbsp; They returned to Hays when Reverend Thorns retired from the ministry in 1970.&nbsp; James served as a faithful deacon all of his life.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Like the other members of his family, he had an eye for color which manifested itself in the development of new registered iris colors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother; John Thorns, and a niece; Jennifer Thorns.

James is survived by his sister Margaret Schmidt of Hays, nieces, Karen Thorns and Margaret Anne Becker and husband Vernon all of Hays; nephews, John Alan Lawver and wife Brenda of Sioux City, Iowa, David Lawver and wife Tracy of Basehor, Kansas and Steve Lawver and wife Chevelle of Carl Junction, Missouri.

Due to the ongoing Covid -19 situation, there will only be graveside services in the Sylvan Grove Township Cemetery in Sylvan Grove, Kansas. Services will be 2 PM on Saturday, September 12, 2020, with Rev. Christine Wagner officiating.

Because of James’ fondness for cats, the family suggests&nbsp;a donation to the Humane Society of the High Plains, 2050 E Highway 40, Hays, KS.

On September 4, 2020, Gordon Earle Tempero passed from this life to move into eternal life in his heavenly home.&nbsp; He was born on April 1, 1922, to Ben, Sr. and Ethel (Spiers)Tempero on a farm near Broughton, KS.&nbsp; 

On December 25, 1948, he married the love of his life, Mary (Bookless).&nbsp; They lived in Manhattan, KS until he graduated from Kansas State with a degree in electrical engineering.&nbsp; While at KSU he was a founding member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.&nbsp; They then moved to Scott City where he worked 37 years for Wheatland Electric.&nbsp; They had 2 children, Preston and Beth, and he enjoyed coaching and umpiring the Little League, served as a leader in Boy Scout Troops 149 and 77 and the Santa Fe Council.&nbsp; He was very active in the First United Methodist Church of Scott City, the Anthem Lodge 284 of the Masons in Scott City and as a 32 degree Shriner of the ISIS Temple in Salina.&nbsp; The family enjoyed many family vacations and spent time traveling the stateside when he had time off.&nbsp; After they retired, they spent over 20 years traveling as members of Holiday Ramblers with their RV full time soaking in life, family, and friends.&nbsp; They made it to all 50 states, Canada, and numerous other countries.&nbsp; He also enjoyed Ham Radio operation, carpentry, leather working, snow skiing, K-state football and little league World Series baseball. &nbsp;

Prior to marriage, Gordon also proudly served his country in the US Navy during WWII, stationed in San Diego.&nbsp;

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. He was the youngest of 5 children: Howard, Floyd, and Ben and Edith (Babe).&nbsp; Survivors include: His wife of 71 years, Mary. His children: Preston (Libeth) Tempero of Liberty, MO, and Beth (Eugene) Fisher of Hays, KS. His grandchildren: Amanda Lange, Rebecca (Kevin) Holsch and Alison Tempero. His great-grandchildren: Hannah, Austin, Clark, Vance, Alahna, and Ashtyn.&nbsp;

Memorial service and interment will be held at a later date due to pandemic restrictions.&nbsp; Memorial donations in his name can be made to Boys Town, Shriners Hospitals, the Masonic Foundation or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Bernice Marie Holmes, age 84, passed 
away on September 8, 2020 at Cedar Village Care Center, Ness City. She 
was born on April 5, 1936 in Schoenchen, Kansas to Jacob and Geneva 
Randa.

She graduated from Schoenchen High 
School and had many different work experiences but the ones she would 
talk about most were being a secretary for K.A.Y.S. Radio and owning 
Larry's Place for 13 years.

Bernice was preceded in death by numerous brothers and sisters and her parents.

She is survived by her beloved 
husband, Larry, of the home; son, Kelly (Juncal) Holmes of Scottsdale, 
AZ and Chris (fiancée Ashlee) Holmes also of Scottsdale; and their 
daughter, Buffey (Doug) Wittman of Ness City; and sister, Jenny Rebel, 
of Ness City.&nbsp; She is also survived by four grandchildren, Natasha, 
Sebastian, Jake, and Josh.

As a very kind and loving sister, 
mother, grandmother, and friend, she will be missed everyday.&nbsp; We love 
you momma.&nbsp; We know you would say in your own way, "I Love You."

Bernice Marie Holmes

John Louis Herter, 85, passed away September 7, 2020, at Ellinwood 
District Hospital after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was 
born June 20, 1935, in Ellinwood, the son of Louis and Mildred (Sinnott)
 Herter.

He was a 1953 graduate of Ellinwood High School. He served in the 
United States Army from 1957 – 1959. After returning home he attended 
Diesel Mechanic Tech School in St. Louis, Missouri. He worked as a 
mechanic a short while before opening his own business Herter Implement 
&amp; Auto in Claflin, Kansas.

John met his one true love, Carol Doll and they were united in 
marriage on November 28, 1963. John was a founding member of the Claflin
 Fire Department and was the Assistant Fire Chief and served as an EMT 
for many years. He was also a member of the SRCA, and he enjoyed drag 
racing for many years.

John was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a 
member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1500, and the V.F.W., all of 
Claflin.

He was a devoted father, and made sure to attend all of his 
children’s activities and also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s 
many events. John enjoyed farming for most of his adult life. He 
cherished sharing his knowledge of cultivating the land with his 
children and grandchildren.

Survivors include: his wife of the home Carol; one daughter, Penny 
(Taber) Stephenson of Olathe; two sons; Brad (Amy) of Dodge City, and 
Don (Stefanie) of Great Bend; six siblings, James (Pat) Herter of 
McPherson, Jerry (Susan) Herter of Pocatello, Idaho, Howard (Mary) 
Herter of Ellinwood, Barbara Herter, Richard (Vickie) Herter, all of 
Wichita, and Helen (Stuart) Nickelson of Seattle, Washington; six 
grandchildren: Tanner Stephenson of Sabetha, Derek (Brooke) Stephenson 
of Liberty, Missouri, Michaela (Curtis) Toews of Whitewater, Rachael 
(Wyatt) Haberman of Dodge City, Johnathan Herter of Dodge City, Alyssa 
Herter of Great Bend, and one great-grandchild Emma Lynn due October, 
2020.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home. 
Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday at the church with 
Rosary, led by the Knights of Columbus to begin at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 11,

John Louis Herter

Clarence C. “Bud” Jacobs Jr., 81, Hays, died Monday, September 7, 2020, at HaysMed.

He was born January 15, 1939, in Hays,&nbsp; the son of Clarence C. “Curly” and Bertha (Schmidt) Jacobs.&nbsp; In 1957, he 
graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy and he served in the Kansas 
National Guard for many years.&nbsp; 

On June 2, 1962, he was united in 
marriage to Dorothy Mae Dinkel in Victoria and they celebrated their 
58th wedding anniversary.&nbsp; Clarence worked for Farmers State Bank, for 
Farmers Insurance for 42 years, and after his retirement, with his son 
at State Glass Company.&nbsp; He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary 
Catholic Church, the St. Mary’s Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council
 #6984, and was a past member of the Kiwanis Club of Hays. He was very 
active in his church, helping with the parish picnics and soup suppers 
for 25 years.&nbsp; His hobbies included playing and coaching softball, his 
team affectionately called “Bud’s Babes”.&nbsp; He loved barbequing for his 
family, was a Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan, and an avid bowler.&nbsp; 
His number one priority was his family, he loved his children and 
grandchildren, attending their events and supporting them.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of 
the home, a son; Francis Jacobs and wife Stephanie, two daughters; 
Michelle Chittenden and husband John II, and Kelly Lagree and husband 
Tony, and a brother; Thomas Jacobs and wife Billie, all of Hays, and 
seven grandchildren; Mason Lagree, Haileigh Jacobs, Johnny Chittenden, 
Gabrielle Chittenden, Hunter Jacobs, Maddie Lagree, and Marcus Lagree.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Thursday, September 10, 2020 at Immaculate Heart of Mary 
Catholic Church, with Fr. Nick Parker and Fr. Don Zimmerman

 </figure>Clarence C. “Bud” Jacobs Jr., 81, Hays, died Monday, September 7, 2020, at HaysMed.He was born January 15, 1939, in Hays,&nbsp; the son of Clarence C. “Curly” and Bertha (Schmidt) Jacobs.&nbsp; In 1957, he 
graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy and he served in the Kansas 
National Guard for many years.&nbsp; On June 2, 1962, he was united in 
marriage to Dorothy Mae Dinkel in Victoria and they celebrated their 
58th wedding anniversary.&nbsp; Clarence worked for Farmers State Bank, for 
Farmers Insurance for 42 years, and after his retirement, with his son 
at State Glass Company.&nbsp; He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary 
Catholic Church, the St. Mary’s Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council
 #6984, and was a past member of the Kiwanis Club of Hays. He was very 
active in his church, helping with the parish picnics and soup suppers 
for 25 years.&nbsp; His hobbies included playing and coaching softball, his 
team affectionately called “Bud’s Babes”.&nbsp; He loved barbequing for his 
family, was a Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan, and an avid bowler.&nbsp; 
His number one priority was his family, he loved his children and 
grandchildren, attending their events and supporting them.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Survivors include his wife Dorothy of 
the home, a son; Francis Jacobs and wife Stephanie, two daughters; 
Michelle Chittenden and husband John II, and Kelly Lagree and husband 
Tony, and a brother; Thomas Jacobs and wife Billie, all of Hays, and 
seven grandchildren; Mason Lagree, Haileigh Jacobs, Johnny Chittenden, 
Gabrielle Chittenden, Hunter Jacobs, Maddie Lagree, and Marcus Lagree.Mass of Christian Burial will be at

Clarence C. 'Bud' Jacobs Jr.

Myra Sylvia Kirchhoff, 92, passed away Monday, September 7, 2020 at Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, KS.


  Myra was born March 1, 1928 in Moonta, South Australia, Australia, the
 third child of August Heinrich and Helena Thekla Jericho.&nbsp; She was 
baptized at Tiparra Lutheran Church on April 1, 1928.&nbsp; She was confirmed
 at Port Neill St. Andrews Congregation November 23, 1941 by Pastor 
Chris Stolz.&nbsp; Myra attended school at Kainton, York Peninsula, Cummins, 
Eyres Peninsula, Butler 1 year and Mt. Hill 2 years. 

  Myra 
worked the Butler Telephone Exchange and ran the post office from 
1944-1953.&nbsp; This was followed by doing domestic work until the end of 
1954, she then worked at Immanuel College doing domestic work until May 
1956.&nbsp;&nbsp; In October 1956 she felt called to serve in Papua New Guinea 
where she worked at Katherine Lehmann School as a lay Missionary in 
charge of cooking for children and guests and took care of guest 
houses.&nbsp;&nbsp; On December 4, 1959 she married Gilbert Kirchhoff who was also
 a lay Missionary.&nbsp; They remained at Wau until February 1965, when they 
went on leave for 1 year, spending 6 months in Australia and 6 months in
 U.S.A.&nbsp; On return to New Guinea they were stationed in Mount Hagen, 
then to Ogelbang and finally Banz before returning to the U.S.A. in 
December 1971 to live.&nbsp; In 1972 Myra and family lived at Gaylord for a 
little over a year before moving to Cedar.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She and her family 
attended St. John Athol Lutheran Church where she was active in teaching
 Sunday School, VBS and the Women of ELCA.&nbsp; Myra’s faith was especially 
important to her and sustained her throughout her life and through many 
challenges.&nbsp; One of the most difficult times was when she came to the 
United States with her husband and children, leaving her mother and 
large extended family behind, with no guarantee she would see them 
again. Myra loved listening to music, playing the piano, and singing.&nbsp; 
At the end of each day she would play the piano and the family would 
sing during evening devotions. In doing so she passed on this love of 
music to her children. During times spent in the hospital, her family 
played the Christian music she loved which calmed and comforted her. 
Myra loved watching birds from her living room window.&nbsp; Myra loved to 
sew and knit.&nbsp; The sewing was a necessity during the time when her 
family was young as a missionary’s life is not a wealthy life and Myra 
sewed many needed clothes.&nbsp; Myra knitted at home and carried her 
knitting with her when she went places and taught many others to knit. 
Myra also enjoyed working with quilts for Lutheran World Relief. &nbsp;Myra 
liked to cook and cooked many a meal for family and friends. &nbsp;Later in 
life, Myra and Gilbert were fortunate enough to visit Australia several 
times and Papua New Guinea once.&nbsp; Many members of her family and former 
missionaries both from Australia and the US also came to visit her and 
Gilbert in the US. Another activity Myra enjoyed was word and board 
games and puzzles. During the family’s time in New Guinea there was no 
television, so this was how the family entertained themselves.&nbsp; Myra and
 Gilbert played games and did puzzles up to the day Myra entered the 
hospital, with Myra beating Gilbert in Upwords that day.

  Myra loved her Lord, her husband, her family and their children and her Australian family.

  She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Erwin and Harold Jericho, Ruth Woolford and Fay Story.


  Myra is survived by her husband Gilbert Kirchhoff of Cedar; five 
children, Anthony (Jane) Kirchhoff of Stuttgart, Gary Kirchhoff of 
Gaylord, Joanne (Jay) Kugler of Billings, MT, Wendy (Phil) Handsaker of 
Dodge City, Lynette (Jerry) Voorhees of Phillipsburg; a brother Colin 
Jericho, two sisters, Rita Jahnke and Gwen Leske, sister-in-law Erna 
Jericho all of Australia, twelve grandchildren, Alyssa (Travis) Stites, 
Colin (Alissa) Kirchhoff, Derek Reed, Brennan and Saige&nbsp; Kirchhoff, 
Jeremey and Jessica Kugler, Lucas, Zachary and Remington Warren, 
Samantha Voorhees and Sabrina (fiancé` Rico Garcia) Voorhees &nbsp;and five 
great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 
held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 12, 2020 at St. John Lutheran 
Church, Athol, with Pastor Bob Sinclair officiating.&nbsp; Visitation will be
 held on Friday, September 11, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. with 
family present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at All Faiths
 Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center, KS and 9:00 a.m. 
until service time at the church on Saturday.&nbsp; Burial will take place in

Myra S. Kirchhoff

Kathleen “Kathy” Diane Stice passed away on September 6, 2020, at Hays 
Medical Center in Hays, Kansas, at the age of 64. 

She was born on 
February 7, 1956, to Franklin and Ruby (Allene) Smith in El Dorado, 
Kansas. Kathy was united in marriage to James “Jim” Stice on February 
14, 1976. They were blessed with three children: Jared, Jacob, and 
Kyleigh.
 Kathy grew up in Stockton where she attended Stockton High School 
and graduated with the class of 1974. She then attended Colby Community 
College for 1 year. Shortly after she and Jim married, Kathy started 
managing and running the bait shop at Webster Lake from 1978-1979. When 
she had her children she devoted all of her time and attention to them 
until they got a little older before she returned to work as a Para at 
the school in Stockton from 1999-2003. If Kathy wasn’t working at the 
school, preparing delicious meals for her family, or tending to her 
children, she was working on the family farm taking care of any need 
that came up. The last 17 years she spent working as the District 
Manager for the Rooks County Soil Conservation District. Family was her 
life – her grandkids always trumped everything and everyone; however, 
she also enjoyed bowling on the WWB Bowling Team and testing her luck in
 a few hands of poker.
 Kathy was an active member in the community, was a part of the VFW 
Auxiliary and charter member of the Sigma Phi ESA for 40 years. 
 She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Allene Smith.
 Left to cherish her memory is her husband, James “Jim” Stice of the 
home; children, Jared (Sonja) Stice, Jacob (LaDonna) Stice, and Kyleigh 
Stice all of Stockton; siblings, Bob (Kathy) Smith of Haughton, LA, and 
Marcie McClure of El Dorado, KS; and six grandchildren, Jase Stice, 
Annabelle Kester, Thomas Kester, Jasmine Kester, Mackenzie Kester, and 
Justice Stice.
 Kathy was a woman of strong faith, an undeniable work ethic, and 
extraordinary love. With a heart and spirit that cared more for others 
than herself, she showed us every day that the greatest of these is 
love. Although we will miss her greatly, we rejoice that her love has 
found its fullness as she joins her Lord in eternal glory.
 A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, September 14, 2020 at 
2:00 PM at the Rooks County Fair Grounds in the SNB Pavilion. There will
 be no public visitation. 
 In lieu of flowers memorials have been requested to go to the Rooks 
County Free Fair and may be sent in care of Plumer-Overlease Funeral

Kathleen D. 'Kathy' Stice

Jerel “Jerry” A. Ubert, 71, Hays, died Monday, September 7, 2020, at his home surrounded by family.

He was born February 15, 1949, in Hays, 
Kansas, the son of Alphonse J. and Anna Marie “Emma” (Brungardt) Ubert.&nbsp;
 He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Military Academy and Fort Hays State 
University.&nbsp; Jerry was a United States Army Veteran, serving as a Senior
 Records Specialist handling Officers’ records while stationed at Fort 
Wainwright, Alaska.&nbsp; 

On August 20, 1976, he was united in marriage to 
Kathy Doughty in Stockton, and they celebrated 44 years of marriage.&nbsp; 
Jerry worked at various positions upon his return from military duty, 
including Ellis County Deputy Treasurer, Hays State Bank, and James 
Motor Company.&nbsp; He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic 
Church, serving on the church committee and was very involved in the 
community serving as President of the Hays City Softball Association, 
board member, President and Secretary/Treasurer of the Hays Bowling 
Association, and in 1999 was elected to the Hays Bowling Association 
Hall of Fame.&nbsp; He was a member of the Hays American Legion Post #173, 
serving as Post Adjutant and&nbsp; American Legion State Softball Chairman.&nbsp;

Jerry was a member of the Kiwanis Club 
of Hays since 1982, serving as Past Club President, Past Lt. Governor, 
Past Governor-Elect, and Past Governor of the Kansas District of 
Kiwanis.&nbsp; He received the James W. Putnam Award, George F. Hixson Award,
 Walter Zeller Award, Centennial Award, was a Legion of Honor Recipient,
 and in 2003 was named District Kiwanian of the Year.&nbsp; In addition to 
serving on a number of club committees, he chaired numerous projects, 
including co-chairing the Kiwanis Flag Project.&nbsp; In 2003 he received the
 Hays All-American Citizen Award, and in 2017 the Hays Area Chamber of 
Commerce Hall of Fame Award.

Survivors include his wife Kathy of the
 home, two sons; Kevin Ubert and wife Kylie and Keith Ubert, all of 
Hays, a brother; Darrell Ubert and wife Arlene, and a sister; Carol 
Koerner, all of Wichita, two granddaughters; Kynlie and Colbye Ubert, 
and seven nephews.

 Laverne was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the faith on June 
28, 1953, at Zion Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, KS. She graduated from 
Phillipsburg High School in 1957 and attended Brown Mackie College in 
Salina, KS. She married Richard C. Merklein on November 16, 1958, at 
Zion Lutheran Church. They had three children: Dale, Dwight and Sally. 
She spent most of her adult life living in Stockton and the last two 
years residing at Hays Good Samaritan Society where she was well taken 
care of and loved. 
 Laverne worked at Farmers State Bank in Stuttgart, Rooks County 
Nursing Home in Plainville, and retired as a dietary aide at the Solomon
 Valley Manor in Stockton. When her children were growing up she was 
involved in their activities as a Cub and Boy Scout den mother, a Girl 
Scout leader, and she taught Sunday school at the Methodist church. 
 When Laverne was in her 40's she learned to drive. After she retired
 she drove anywhere she wanted whether to visit Dwight in Wyoming, to 
Phillipsburg to visit relatives, or just for ice cream at The Chicken 
Inn. She even drove by herself to Canada taking different routes to 
visit friends and relatives and to see the country. 
 Another of Laverne's favorite pastimes was writing letters to 
friends and pen pals. It didn't matter who the person was, if they wrote
 back a friendship soon started. Even after she could no longer write 
she loved receiving a note or card. 
 Preceding Laverne in death are her parents and husband Richard on December 30, 2002. 
 Survivors include sons, Dale Merklein and wife Lisa of Salina, and 
Dwight Merklein and wife Zita of Thermopolis, WY; daughter, Sally Pywell
 and husband Mark of Burdett, KS; siblings, Delwin Grau and wife Lorine 
of Littleton, CO, Melvin Grau and wife Grace and Leanna Driggs and 
husband Doug, all of Phillipsburg; sister-in-law Betty Zillinger and 
aunt Norma Preuss both of Stuttgart; grandson Lane Pywell of Wichita; 
and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. 
 A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2020, at 
10:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Phillipsburg. Burial will follow 
in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Rural Phillips County. Visitation will be 
held on Wednesday 3:00-8:00 p.m. at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in 
Stockton with the family receiving friends 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Laverne Mae Merklein

James "Jim" W. Prochazka, 79, of Atwood, Kansas passed peacefully from 
this life on September 6, 2020, after a courageous battle with cancer. 

Born in McCook, NE to Bertha (Horinek) and Wenceslaus (W.E.) Prochazka 
on November 17, 1940, James was a lifelong resident of Rawlins County, 
KS. He attended elementary school at Queen of Driftwood School in the 
Driftwood Township of Northern Rawlins County, followed by Saint 
Joseph's Military Academy in Hays, KS, graduating with the Class of 
1958. Following a year at Kansas State University, Jim joined the Army 
Reserves in 1960, spending time in Fort Leonard Wood, MO and Fort 
Jackson, SC until his honorable discharge in 1965. He then returned to 
the family farm to pursue his passion of livestock, horses, farming, and
 ranching with his father. With unwavering pride in his community, Jim 
donated his time to many local councils and boards over the years, 
including 4-H Council, Rawlins County Rodeo Association, USD 318 School 
Board, Sacred Heart Catholic Church Parish Council, Rawlins County 
Extension Council, and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. 
On April 16, 1966, Jim married Patricia A. Arnold, daughter of Simon and
 Aldea (Plante) Arnold. Unto their union were born five children: 
Vanessa, Marcus, Valarie, Veanna, and Nicholas. 
Jim's adult years were spent on the farm and cattle feeding operation 
where he would eventually move his family in 1979. Following their 
years on the farm, Jim continued to provide for his family as owner of 
feedlot pen cleaning and excavating businesses, and as an owner operator
 for Landstar Inway for many years. Jim continued to be active into his 
retirement, with a few part-time jobs, none more enjoyable than his time
 spent, and friendships formed at CS Gas Company in Atwood. 
Jim maintained his role as the emotional and spiritual compass for his 
family throughout his life. A proud and dedicated patriarch, his family 
knew everything would be OK when Jim arrived with his calm presence. 
Relationships were important, and those close to Jim never had to 
question his admiration for them, especially his wife, children, and 
grandchildren. Jim was an avid gardening enthusiast and hero to 16 
grandchildren who thought he hung the moon. While generally a man of 
few words, he also cherished visits with family and friends, and, if you
 caught him at the right time, could find yourself in a conversation 
that could last for hours. 
James is preceded in death by parents, Bertha (Horinek) and W.E. 
Prochazka both Atwood, KS. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, 
Patricia (Arnold) Prochazka, Atwood, KS; daughter Vanessa (Doug) Merz, 
Atwood, KS, and their children, Kaitlin, Atwood, KS, Parker, Atwood, KS,
 Ashlynn, Manhattan, KS, and Rileyanne, Atwood, KS; son Marcus 
(Danielle) Prochazka, Greeley, CO and their daughters, Arianne and 
Gracie, Loveland, CO; daughter Valarie (Andy) Grollmes, Minden, NE and

Genevieve Eileen “Genny” Tanis, 99, went to be with her Lord Saturday, September 5, 2020.&nbsp; She was born February 13, 1921, in rural Osborne County, the daughter of Wesley E. and Elizabeth P. (Hofer) Heiser.

She was a farm wife and retired secretary.

Mrs. Tanis is preceded in death by her husband, Aura in 2008, her siblings, Delpha Shike and Dean Heiser.

She is survived by son, Jim Tanis (Ruth) of Hays; daughter, Barb Hoogeveen (Phil) of Sully, Iowa; daughter, Bonnie Tanis of Downs; son, John Tanis (Jan) of Cawker City, 4 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Gene H. Holloway, born on Jan. 24, 1933, died Sept. 2, 2020, at 
Stafford County Hospital after a short illness with covered stays 
including Hutchinson and Pratt hospitals.

Gene is survived by his wife, Mary Lou of Stafford; a son, Jay 
Holloway and wife Dawn of Great Bend; a granddaughter, Montana Holloway 
of Pratt; a step daughter, Debra Ackley of Wichita; grandson, Cain Amos 
and step grandson, Dallas Marlow; great grandchildren, Austin Amos, 
Madison Amos, Ryder Morris, Kaimana Morris, and Kairyana Morris; a great
 great grandchild, Kehgan Amos; brother in law, Karol Claypool; and 
nephew, TJ Claypool of Stafford. There are a host of neices and nephews 
from the Claypool, Holloway, Meridith and Lonnon families.

Gene is pre-deceased by his father, Henry Holloway of Wichita; his 
mother, Kathryn Ruby Potter of Wichita and aunt, Dr. Janet Holloway, 
anesthesiologist of Detroit, Michigan, both ladies had retired in Winter
 Haven, Florida.; son, Ronald Lee Ackley; sister, Sarah Holloway; and 
sister in law, Barbara Claypool.

Gene spent his working life at Beech Aircraft in Wichita where he met
 Mary Lou. They were married July 15, 1960. After 4000 were laid off at 
Beech, Boeing and Cessna, they moved to Stafford, Mary’s hometown and 
worked for Whitlock Fertilizer Plant. They moved to Great Bend in 1964 
and ran the Cooper Lawn &amp; Garden Center. Gene worked for many years 
selling cars for O'Connell Motors, Spruill Motors and Marmie Motors, 
then owned the Auto Mart used car lot.

Gene and Mary both loved to garden and worked the farmers market for 
over 20 years and many trips to bring Colorado peaches to the market. 
Gene loved to fish the Arkansas, Ninnescah and Walnut Rivers. The fish 
will miss his way of catch and release, and he will be missed by family 
and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 12,
 2020, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Bill Arnold presiding. Thank 
you to Owen Song, international student of Gene and Mary from Seoul, 
South Korea, for saying a special prayer in Korean for grandpa.

Vivian Amalee Slabaugh Barnes, age 91, died on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at the Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas.  She was born on October 26, 1928 in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, the daughter of Joseph Harlan Lyons and Mary Elizabeth Cook.  

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Dodge City, Kansas and the Order of the Eastern Star.  Vivian worked for Roche Bio Medical until her retirement.

On November 10, 1946 she married Roy Slabaugh in DeQueen, Arkansas,  He preceded her in death on November 9, 1976 in Dodge City, Kansas.  On May 18, 1979, she married Earl Harmon in Dodge City, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on September 1, 1984 in Dodge City, Kansas.  On February 8, 1985 she married Merle Barnes in Cimarron, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on March 11, 2005, in Dodge City, Kansas.

Survivors include - Children, Marilyn Legg (Earl) of Leoti, Kansas, Roger Slabaugh (Michelle) of Corvallis, Oregon, Ron Slabaugh (Lorraine) Hugo, Oklahoma, Don Slabaugh of Dodge City, Kansas; Step-Children, Roger Barnes of Topeka, Kansas, Lenis Dawson (Paul) Lawrence, Kansas; 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, 12 siblings, and two grandsons.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City, Kansas.

He preceded her in death on March 11, 2005, in Dodge City, Kansas.Survivors include - Children, Marilyn Legg (Earl) of Leoti, Kansas, Roger Slabaugh (Michelle) of Corvallis, Oregon, Ron Slabaugh (Lorraine) Hugo, Oklahoma, Don Slabaugh of Dodge City, Kansas; Step-Children, Roger Barnes of Topeka, Kansas, Lenis Dawson (Paul) Lawrence, Kansas; 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildrenShe was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, 12 siblings, and two grandsons.Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City, Kansas. John Lee Sparks Jr., 87, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2020 in Wichita, KS.&nbsp; 
 John was born March 22, 1933 in Ennis, TX, the son of John Lee Sparks,
 Sr. and Ella Fern (Colvin) Sparks.&nbsp; John served in the United States 
Marine Corps during the Korean War and used the G.I. Bill to attend 
flying school and began a lifelong career in corporate aviation.&nbsp; After 
retiring, John always said the only time he missed flying was when he 
was awake. John married Ella M. Hubbard on December 14, 
1956.&nbsp; They shared many happy memories and enjoyed living in a number of
 interesting places due to his career.&nbsp; He was especially fond of hiking
 and RV travel trips to Canada and throughout the U.S.&nbsp; John and Ellie 
retired to Ellie's home town of Smith Center, KS in 2005.&nbsp; John enjoyed a
 number of hobbies, one of which was creating museum quality ship 
models.&nbsp; In 2012 John authored a book about his flying career called 
"The Last Flight Plan", Destination Unknown". John is survived by his wife Ellie, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. 
 There will be a celebration of John's life at a later date.&nbsp; Memorials
 may be given to a recipient of your choice or St. Jude's Children's 
Hospital and can be sent in care of All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S.
