Gary Edd DeFries was born April 3, 1937 to William Edward “Edd” 
DeFries &amp; Lyda Mae Farley DeFries in St. Francis, Kansas, joining 
older sisters Loretta &amp; Jean.&nbsp; His first years were spent on the 
family’s farm outside Goodland before moving into town when he started 
school.&nbsp; He got his 1st dog, Mike, at that time, and his father had him 
try his hand at driving a tractor when he was only 4 years old.&nbsp; He went
 through all his years of schooling in Goodland, raising chickens in FFA
 in high school &amp; spending the summers farming wheat with his 
father.&nbsp; He got pretty good at shooting jack rabbits &amp; rattle snakes
 out in the wheat fields!&nbsp; After his beloved Mike died, he found another
 friend in his dog Taffy, who Gary built a fine dog house for as an FFA 
project.&nbsp;

After graduating from Goodland High School in 1955, where Gary was 
active in Youth for Christ, Gary went to Minnesota Bible College where 
he played clarinet for the University of Minnesota band.&nbsp; He then went 
to Denver University where he earned his bachelor’s followed by studies 
in Europe.&nbsp; While a student at Uppsala University in Sweden, he met his 
wife Reidun while on a ski trip.&nbsp; They married in the summer of 1962, 
followed by a hitchhiking honeymoon across Europe.&nbsp; Before their oldest 
son, William Arvid, was born in June of 1963, they moved back to 
Goodland.&nbsp; Heeding his mother’s encouragement to become a preacher, Gary
 moved his family to New Brighton, Minnesota where he attended United 
Theological Seminary.&nbsp; During this time 2 more children joined the 
family:&nbsp; Birger Cox (Erik) in December of 1964, and Anita Kirsten in 
March of 1966.

After graduating from seminary, Gary was called to preach at Bethany 
Christian Church in Westminster, Colorado.&nbsp; He studied gerontology 
during this time, which led to a job at a nursing home in Jacksonville, 
Illinois, where Erik started school.&nbsp; The family then moved to Milwaukee
 where Gary managed housing for the Southern Baptist Convention.&nbsp; Sadly,
 during this time the couple’s marriage ended in divorce, and Gary 
gained custody of his 3 children, a rare occurrence for a father in 
1972.&nbsp; He &amp; the children then moved to Madison &amp; on to Port 
Washington, Wisconsin for a few years, and then on to Idaho Springs, 
Colorado in 1975, where Gary was in business for himself and continued 
to lease his wheat farm in Goodland.

In 1977 Gary accepted the call to preach at the Christian Church in 
Ault, Colorado, where he and his boys farmed wheat between Pierce &amp; 
Nunn, and his boys followed in his footsteps by joining the Highland FFA
 Chapter.&nbsp; In 1980 his oldest son joined the Marines, and soon after he 
drove his younger children to Seymour, Tennessee to attend a Christian 
boarding school.&nbsp; He preached in several small churches in Tennessee, 
Kentucky &amp; Virginia throughout the eighties.&nbsp;

Ever interested in exploring new places, Gary took his family on many
 a trip to various interesting nooks &amp; crannies across the U.S.A., 
and he even spent a few years as a long-haul truck driver.&nbsp; He was 
instrumental in helping his children as they completed their high school
 diplomas and embarked on careers and further education, and he &amp; 
his daughter drove the Alcan when she moved there to teach in Alaska.&nbsp; 
Gary was always there to advise &amp; encourage all of his children, 
spurring them on to grow in their faith and their walk with the Lord.&nbsp; 
He was the best counselor &amp; friend, always inspiring his children to
 achieve more than they ever thought they could.&nbsp; He was a man of so 
many talents, ever learning and never bored.&nbsp; He had a brilliant mind, 
and was a natural teacher; Gary was multi-lingual, and was still 
learning languages in his eighties.&nbsp; Much to the joy of his children, he
 and their mother became good friends in the last few years of Gary’s 
life, bringing healing &amp; restoration to all of their hearts.&nbsp; Gary 
continued in ministry to the end of his days on this earth, lifting all 
those he loved in prayer to the Lord.&nbsp; He has taken his last journey to 
be with his Lord &amp; Savior, and though he will be greatly missed, his
 family rejoices with him on his Homecoming.

Gary is survived by his children &amp; their spouses, Bill &amp; Joy,
 Erik, and Kirsten &amp; Jim; his 1st wife, Reidun, &amp; widow, 
Elizabeth; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Thank you for rearing us up, and for all you taught &amp; instilled in us, Daddy.&nbsp; We shall see you in the Morning.

Gary DeFries

Robert C. “Bob” McCobb, 73, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at his residence with his family by his side.

Bob was born April 13, 1947 in Russell, Kansas.  He was one of three children born to Boyden and Doris M. (Marsh) McCobb.  He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the Class of ’65.  Bob then served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam.  After his tour of duty, Bob was stationed at Ft. Dix, New Jersey, where he was united in marriage to Gertrude C. “Trudy” Scarborough on June 22, 1968.  This union was blessed with two children; Scott and Caryn. After his discharge from the Army they lived in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania, while Bob attended Bucks County Community College.

Bob and his family returned to Russell in 1974 to join his father Boyden in his Carrier Dealership.  After Boyden’s death, Bob and his brother purchased the business in 1977 and were the owners and operators until 1980.  After several positions Bob worked at the USPO in Hays, Kansas, when he was a member and Past President of the Postal Workers Union, retiring in 2004.  Bob then answered a call to the ministry serving as a Lay Pastor at the Natoma and Pleasant Plains United Methodist Churches, retiring in 2010

Bob was a lifetime member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.  He was active serving on most committees throughout the years.  He and Trudy sponsored Sr. High UMF, taught young and older adult Sunday School and Stephen Ministry classes.  He was a member of the Russell VFW Post #6240, Russell Elks Lodge and served on the USD 407 School Board.  In his spare time he enjoyed hunting when he was younger, watching K-State University Athletics and the Dallas Cowboys, running marathons and especially spending time with his grandchildren.

Bob’s surviving family include his wife of 52 years, Trudy of the home; son, Scott McCobb (Donya) of Russell, Kansas; daughter, Caryn Carson (Thom) of Gretna, Nebraska; brother, Allan McCobb of Russell, Kansas; 18 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Carolyn Mitchell.

Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, August 17, 2020 at the Trinity United Methodist Church of Russell.  Burial of Ashes will follow at the Russell City Cemetery where the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites.  The family will be present to greet friends from 9:30 AM to service time at the church on Monday.  Memorials have been established with DAV Advocacy for Vietnam Vets or Ronald McDonald House in Wichita, Kansas.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Bernie was a U.S. Army veteran.  He worked as a tradesman in the construction industry.  He will be missed by many.  

Preceding him in death are his parents; two brothers, Julian and George;  and one sister, Marie Holaday Espara. He is survived by sisters, Twila Stover of Salina, Ks Lucille Houston of Austin, Tx, Rita (Pat) Vavricka of Ness City, Kansas; and brother, Ronald (Teresa) Albers of Colwich, Kansas.

Visitation and rosary will be held at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter, Kansas on Friday, August 14, at 7:00PM.  Family will be present 30 minutes prior, as well as after the rosary to greet friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at St Joseph Catholic Church, Oakley, Kansas, at 10:30 Saturday,August 15 2020.

Don Raymond Endsley

Gloria Lynn (Bushnell) Babcock was born on the Bushnell family farm west of Speed, Kansas, on Dec. 16, 1934 to John Wellington Bushnell and Sarah Ellen (Eller) Bushnell.&nbsp; She passed away at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, on Monday, Aug. 10, 2020 at the age of 85 years.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Gloria spent her early childhood and school years in Speed, Kirwin, Victoria, and Agra.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; On Sept. 9, 1951 she married Donald Eugene Babcock in Kensington.&nbsp; They lived in and around the Phillipsburg area their entire married life.&nbsp; Don drove truck for Farmland Industries for several years and later became fully employed in the family farming business. Gloria was a homemaker, but also had jobs throughout the years as a waitress at Martha’s Café, store clerk with Rankin Drug, and secretary at High Plains Mental Health just prior to her retirement.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, John and Sara Bushnell, a son, Gordon Eugene Babcock, grandson Bronson Phillip Babcock, and granddaughter Audra Lynn Babcock.&nbsp; Also preceding her in death were her oldest brother, Will Jr. Schalansky, his wife Elda, and two younger brothers, John Ray Bushnell and Earl F. Bushnell.

Gloria Lynn (Bushnell) Babcock

Duane Louis Dorshorst, 62, passed away Aug. 11 at Decatur County Health Systems. He was born on Dec. 6, 1957 in Beverly Hills, Calif., son of Ronald and Patricia (Moore) Dorshorst but the family soon moved, and Duane spent most of his younger days in Hay Springs, Neb. He graduated from Hay Springs High school and went on to play college football and compete in track at Chadron State College while pursuing a degree in geology. On Aug. 7, 1982, he wed Patricia (Miller) and to that union they added four daughters. Although Duane began his career in geology, he quickly found his calling in education. He was a teacher and administrator in the USD 294 school system for 35 years, serving 22 years as elementary principal. In that time, he touched the lives of many students, teachers, and community members.

He loved to interact with his students not only in the classroom but also on the sports field. Duane served as a football coach, girls basketball coach and track coach at different times throughout his career. Several of his teams found great success in state competitions.

As an educator, it was important to Duane that every student feel valued and important. No matter how much work he had to do, he always made time to help someone else or help in the lunchroom where he strove to interact with each student by name.

Duane was an advocate for education. He was a member of United School Administrators and KAESP for over 20 years, serving as the Kansas Association of Elementary School Principal President in 2008. He also served as the Zone 8 Director for the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

In 2017, he was awarded the Kansas Outstanding Service Award from USA for his dedication to education in Kansas. Although Duane tried retirement for a year, his passion for improving education for the students of Kansas soon took him back to work.

His most current position in education found him as the executive director for the Kansas Association of Principals and working with USA Kansas. He was a lifelong advocate for education both at the state and national levels and served as a mentor and inspiration to many students, teachers and administrators during his career. Outside of the education world, Duane also liked to spend his time working within his church parish and the community. He spent time on the library board and hospital board.

He was active in helping with the 4-H fair and was a pig superintendent for several years. In Duane’s more recent endeavors, he volunteered at the movie theater. In his parish, Duane has served as a Sunday school teacher, CYO sponsor, and church council member. He was a fourth degree Knights of Columbus member.

In his spare time, you would find Duane on the golf course, gardening, or helping someone with anything they needed. He enjoyed spending time with family and was the greatest example of family first. Many miles were put on his vehicles to travel to the events of his children and grandchildren throughout his life and he would never miss one if he could help it. Duane is survived by his wife, Patricia J of Oberlin; four daughters, Danielle (Joe) Suchsland Agra, Kelsey (Andrew) Feyes of Tallmadge, Ohio, Tricia (Mitchell) Haden of Cheyenne, Wyo., Mikaela (Gunnar) Hays of Lawrence; mother, Patricia L. (Moore) Dorshorst of Hay Springs, Neb.; two sisters, Sheyrl (Tom) Simons and Rochelle (Will) White; seven grandchildren Aden Shaw, Bryson Shaw, Clara Jo Feyes, Miley Suchsland, Alexandra Feyes, Harper Suchsland, Lyla Haden. Duane was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Dorshorst. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, 2020 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Leoville. Burial will follow at the Oberlin Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, 2020 at Pauls Funeral Home, Oberlin. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A Rosary will be said following the visitation at 8 p.m.

Gerald Eugene "Jerry," "Birdman" Bird of Plainville, Kansas, died August 
10, 2020 at his sister’s home in Hoxie, Kansas. Jerry was born in Hays,
 Kansas, May 16, 1953 to John E. and Norma Jean (Hornbeck) Bird. He was
 raised in Plainville and graduated from Plainville High School in 1971.
 From there, he went to Hutchinson Community College. After college, 
he moved from Hutchinson to Wichita and worked for Hugo’s 
Harley-Davidson. Eventually he returned to Plainville and worked for 
many years as a roughneck and pumper in the oil fields.
 Jerry’s true love and earliest career was motorcycle racing, where 
he earned his nickname, Birdman. The young man could absolutely fly 
around the track. He started racing as a teenager riding scrambles 
tracks and half-mile ovals, and with his dad John as crew chief and 
mechanic, he won races all over the Great Plains. He filled the house 
with trophies from his wins, and it’s rumored that he won every race he 
entered in 1972. He mostly retired from racing after the 1974 season, 
though he did don the leathers a few times here and there to appear in 
some old-timer events.
 In addition to racing, Birdman enjoyed spending time with his nieces
 and nephews, playing cards, shooting pool, and burning up ammunition. 
It was rare to spot him without a Springer Spaniel by his side, and he 
always seemed to have an enormous cat around the house. Jerry will 
forever be remembered for his huge heart, his fantastic sense of humor 
and his distinctive Birdman laugh.
 Jerry is survived by his two sisters, Constance Von Feldt and her 
husband Jim of Victoria, and Janet Kaba Moss of Hoxie, nieces and 
nephews, extended family, and countless friends.
 He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Norma Bird; Grandparents, Henry and Lillian Bird and Frank and Mary Hornbeck.
 Graveside services will be held at the Plainville City Cemetery, 
Saturday, August 15, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be held at the 
Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, Plainville, Kansas on Friday August 14,

Hays, Kansas, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2020, at Hays Medical 
Center. He was born October 31, 1943, in Naponee, Nebraska, to Wayne and 
Ella (Bedore) Harwood. Leland attended Hays High and earned a Bachelor 
of Business Administration from Northwood University in Midland, 
Michigan. On April 12, 1977, he married Kerry Pfannenstiel in Hays.

Leland was a retired US Army MSG. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays.

He is survived by his wife, Kerry of 
Hays; a daughter, Katara Harwood of Colorado; two brothers, Jay Harwood 
of Grand Junction, Colorado and Keith Harwood of Great Bend.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents; two brothers, Gordon Harwood and Chester Delaine Harwood; a 
sister, Carol M. Binder; three nephews, Dale Leon Harwood, William 
Howard McCullough and Roy Chester Binder; in-laws, Francis N. and Rita 
M. Pfannenstiel.

Leland G. 'Jack' Harwood

Louise C. Hammerschmidt, 96, Victoria, died Sunday, August 9, 2020, at her son’s home in Topeka.

She was born June 22, 1924, in Catharine, the daughter of Paul and Mary (Seitz) Miller.&nbsp; On August 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to Joseph F. “Joe” Hammerschmidt in Catharine, and they celebrated 51 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on December 1, 1998.&nbsp; She worked numerous jobs, but her favorite was at Travenol Laboratories.&nbsp; Her memberships included The Basilica of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, St. Fidelis Christian Mothers, and the Victoria VFW Post #1751 Auxiliary.&nbsp; She enjoyed flower gardening, was a great cook, loved baking, and enjoyed preparing chocolate chip cookies, homemade noodles, and fried chicken, which were family favorites.&nbsp; She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.&nbsp; Louise often said, “Prayer is very powerful.”

Survivors include a son; Ron Hammerschmidt and wife Mary Anne of Topeka, a daughter; Mary Beth Green and husband Ron of Lawrence, a daughter-in-law; Pat Hammerschmidt of Hays, a sister Mary Agnes Hayes of Topeka, nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Joe, two sons; Don and Bob Hammerschmidt, nine brothers, five sisters, and a brother-in-law; Bob Hayes.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Monday, August 17, 2020 at The Basilica of St. Fidelis in Victoria, with Fr. John Schmeidler officiating.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 10:00 am until 11:00, with a Christian Mothers rosary at 10:30 am, all on Monday at The Basilica.&nbsp;

Leland Martin Nuss, 97, of Russell, Kansas, died on Saturday, August 08, 2020, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Leland was born on the family farm on December 30, 1922, in Russell County near Milberger, Kansas, the son of Edward and Amelia (Karst) Nuss.  He grew up in and attended local country schools in Milberger.  He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Frances Alberta Holl on October 16, 1953, in Russell, Kansas.  He took over the family farm and loved working hard to make the farm as successful as possible.  Leland and Frances were blessed with two children, a son Monte and a daughter Sandra.  They were members of the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas.  He was an avid Kansas University Basketball fan and loved attending his granddaughters sporting events. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include his wife Frances of Russell, Kansas; son Monte Nuss and wife Mary of Russell, Kansas; daughter Sandra Doherty of Hutchinson, Kansas; 5 grandchildren David (Susan) and Brian Doherty, Erica (Ryan) Feil and Kaci and Whitney Nuss; 3 great grandchildren Bryson and Lawson Feil and Andy Doherty.

Leland Martin Nuss

Dennis L. “Pete” Malleck, age 78, formerly from Indianola, NE passed away at Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS on August 6, 2020.  Pete was born in McCook, NE on March 5, 1942, to James and Genevieve (Powers) Malleck.   He attended school in Indianola graduating from Indianola High School in 1960.  He excelled in in all sports especially basketball.  Pete continued his education attending Milford Trade School in Milford studying diesel mechanics. 

On August 13, 1960, Pete was united in marriage to Marilyn McConville.  They would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this year.  He was a charter member of the Russell Cross-Trailers Square Dance Club, an active member of the Petticoat Poppers Square Dance Club of Hays, KS, a member of the Knights of Columbus Russell Council, a member of the Leisure Years Center in Ness City where he enjoyed the food and playing cards, and a member of the Sacred Heart Parish of Ness City, where he attended daily mass.  He helped with distribution of commodities in Ness City. Pete enjoyed his family, playing solitaire, traveling and tinkering in his shed.  He had a great talent for fixing things.

Pete worked as a bottom-hole pump specialist working in the oil fields from Indianola, NE to Russell, KS to Hays, KS and finally to Ness City KS.  He retired from Sunrise Oilfield Supply in Ness City, KS. 

He was preceded in death by his parents: Jim and Genevieve; brothers: Marvin and wife Judy, Tom and wife Sherry; sisters: Jane and husband Dan Bahl and Judy Malleck Keith; brother-in-law: Joe Ried.

Pete is survived by his wife: Marilyn of Ness City, KS; daughter: Vanessa and husband Terry Rinehart of Burlington, CO; 4 son: Kevin and wife Gina of Topeka, KS; Tom and wife Lynn of Basehor, KS; Paul and wife Kelly of Victoria, KS; Matt and wife  Megan of Basehor, KS.  His granchildren, Josh and Clarissa Rinehart, Nick Rinehart and Samantha, Ben Rinehart and Krista, Andrew and Casey Malleck, Adam and Marah Malleck, Michael Malleck and Amber, Tony and Marissa Malleck, Josh and Mallory Koerner, Emma Malleck, Erica Malleck, Madison Malleck and Mason Malleck. 10 great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren and several step great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Lonnie and wife Jo of Indianola, NE; Philip and friend Tammy  of Indianola, NE; 2 sisters: Vonda Parrott of  Lincoln, NE; Jeannine Reed of Lincoln, NE; brothers-in-law: Randy Keith of Indianola; Robert wife Kathy McConville, Indianola, NE; sister-in-law: Cecelia Saladen of Santa Fe, NM. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 14, 2020 10:30 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in indianola, NE with Father Greg Pawloski and Father Pascal Klein co-celebrating.  Visitation will be held at the Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook on Thursday, August 13, 2020 from 10:00 AM till after Rosary, with the family greeting guests from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM on Thursday at the Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel.  Interment will be in the St. Catherine’s Catholic Cemetery in Indianola, NE. Leo V. Friebus, 86, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2020, at Main Street Manor in Russell.

Leo was born August 19, 1933, in Dorrance, Kansas.  He was the son of John C. and Lydia (Wallert) Friebus.  He grew up in Dorrance and graduated from Dorrance High School.

Leo was united in marriage to Janice M. Prediger on July 4, 1954, in Dorrance.  This union was blessed with two sons, Dwight and Drew.  They made their home on a farm outside of Dorrance.  Janice preceded him in death on March 24, 2020.

Leo was a farmer most of his life.  He also worked in the oilfields, was a school bus driver for many years and was a truck driver.  He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Dorrance and the American Angus Association.  He enjoyed fishing and taking care of his black angus cattle.

Leo’s surviving family include his two sons, Dwight Friebus (Stacey) of Greeley, Colorado and Drew Friebus (Molly) of Russell, Kansas.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents; wife Janice; two brothers, Ernest Friebus and Melvin Friebus; and five sisters, Emma Smith, Ella Rumley, Eva Mae Schmidt,Violet Stull and Elsie Sebesta. A private family service will be held at a later date.  The family has chosen Cremation and no visitation will be held.  A Memorial has been established with the First Lutheran Church of Dorrance.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Norton resident Betty Jean Baker passed away August 6, 2020, at the 
Andbe Home in Norton at the age of 86. 

She was born Sept. 14, 1933, in

Dennis V. Bollig, age 70, of Ellis, Kansas, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2020, at Hays Medical Center. He was born June 16, 1950, in Hays, Kansas, to Virgil and Adalinda (Leikam) Bollig. On May 4, 1974, he married Kristine Day at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Dennis had worked as a cook for many years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Sr. Companions and Foster Grandparents. He enjoyed cooking for family and attending his grandchildren’s events. Dennis is survived by his wife, Kristine of Ellis; two sons, Matthew Bollig and wife Jennifer of Ellis and Tom Bollig and wife Nicole of Lawrence, Kansas; three granddaughters, Trinity and Isabella Bollig of Ellis and Addy Bollig of Lawrence; a brother, Wayne Bollig and wife Connie of Topeka, Kansas, two sisters, Karen Strachen of Russell, Kansas and Donna Brohman of Downs, Kansas. Dennis V. Bollig

Velma L Corder was born February 3, 1921, to Cliff and Ethel Granger in Manning, Kansas.    She passed away on August 9, 2020, at Park Lane Nursing Home, Scott City, Kansas.

Velma moved to Wichita County early in her childhood to a farm along Beaver creek.  She attended a nearby country school.  She moved to Scott City and lived with her aunt in order to attend high school.  She graduated in 1940 and worked at the original hospital in Scott City until moving to Kansas City, Missouri in 1942.  Velma was a messenger for an optical company for almost twenty years.  She later worked in a nearby cafeteria until retirement.  

After retiring she moved back to Scott City, KS where she resided until her death.  Velma enjoyed socializing with coffee in the mornings and ballroom dancing in the evenings.  Velma loved to “get out of town” and travel anywhere to do different things, even if it was just for a day.  She was gifted musically and could play the piano by ear.  She belonged to East Gate Chapter 367 Order of the Eastern Star.  She attended the Budd Park Christian Church in Kansas City. Velma married Bill Corder in 1956 and later divorced.  

Preceding her in death were her parents,  sisters Fern and Gladys Granger, and her twin sister Thelma Rudolph.  

She is survived by a nephew, W. Lee and Diane Rudolph of Olathe, Ks, and his children Shari and Scott Gamble of Marion, IL, and John Rudolph of Paducah, KY.  A niece Glenda and Richard Randall, Scott City, Ks, and their children Tyson and Cris Randall of Cummings, GA and Shelley and Jason Phelps of Ulysses, Ks.

A private family graveside service will be at the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas with Steve Payne presiding.

Memorials may be made out to either Park Lane Nursing Home or St. Catherine Hospice in care of Price &amp; Sons Funeral Homes.

Melvin J. Dinkel, 84, died Monday, August 10, 2020 at his home in Garden
 City, Kansas. He was born September 18, 1935 in Morland, Kansas the 
son of Henry &amp; Josephine (Gerstner) Dinkel. 
 Melvin grew up in the Morland, Kansas area. He attended schools in
 Graham County and graduated from Morland High School in 1953. Melvin 
served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1962. After the service 
he returned to Moreland. On June 3, 1961, he married Eunice A. Martell 
in St. Peter, Kansas. They moved to Goodland, Kansas in 1964. They 
later lived for a short time in Laurel, Nebraska in 1978. They moved to
 Garden City in 1979 where they have lived since. Melvin managed the 
Co-op while living in Morland and Laurel. After moving to Garden City, 
he worked as a sales representative at Farmland Industries. From 1990 
to 1997, he worked as the manager of Country Corner in Garden City and 
retired in 1997. 
 Melvin was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City 
and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed going to the 
casinos, fixing things, gardening, and he especially enjoyed spending 
time with his family. 
 Survivors include his wife Eunice A. Dinkel of the home; five 
children Daryl &amp; wife Marty Dinkel of Garden City, John &amp; wife 
Karen Dinkel of Garden City, Brian &amp; wife Shiela Dinkel of Garden 
City, Tim &amp; wife Latisha Dinkel of Montgomery, Texas, and Ann &amp; 
husband Luther Britton of Jackson, Michigan; two brothers LeRoy Dinkel 
of Morland, Kansas and Dan Dinkel of Bismarck, North Dakota; three 
sisters Rosie Zerr of Quinter, Kansas, Joan Miller of Hays, Kansas, and 
Arlene Fickel of Gunnison, Colorado; sixteen Grandchildren; and nineteen
 Great-Grandchildren. Melvin is preceded in death by his parents and a 
son Mark Dinkel. 
 A Vigil Service and Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday,

Melvin J. Dinkel

William Wesley Olivey, 82, passed away August 10, 2020, at Clara 
Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born on February 2, 1938, at Tupper 
Lake, New York, to Harold &amp; Vera (Foote) Olivey. He married Mary Ann
 Mikesell on April 20, 1958, at Idaville, Ind. She died July 17, 2015.

A Great Bend resident since 2014, William was a retiree of the United
 States Navy, having served as a Master Chief Avionics Technician. He 
was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Great Bend. While in 
high school and the Navy, William excelled at basketball. He enjoyed the
 world travel that the Navy offered and was an avid golfer, sports fan 
and reader.

He is survived by his daughter, Cathy Rhan of Great Bend; three 
grandchildren, Megan Guinn and husband Justin, Sabrina Doonan and

Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born on February 2, 1938, at Tupper 
Lake, New York, to Harold &amp; Vera (Foote) Olivey. He married Mary Ann
 Mikesell on April 20, 1958, at Idaville, Ind. She died July 17, 2015.A Great Bend resident since 2014, William was a retiree of the United
 States Navy, having served as a Master Chief Avionics Technician. He 
was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Great Bend. While in 
high school and the Navy, William excelled at basketball. He enjoyed the
 world travel that the Navy offered and was an avid golfer, sports fan 
and reader.He is survived by his daughter, Cathy Rhan of Great Bend; three 
grandchildren, Megan Guinn and husband Justin, Sabrina Doonan and 
husband Darren, and Wesley Olivey and wife Kristin; and six great

William Wesley Olivey

Littleton, Colorado, resident Garry D. Isabell passed away Thursday,
 August 9, 2020, at the Kearney Regional Medical Center, Kearney, NE at 
the age of 64.

Gary was born July 12, 1956, in Denver, CO, the son of Roy and Florence (Sardini) Isabell.

He was united in marriage to Deanna Ingram on June 19, 1976 at Long Island, KS.&nbsp; She survives.

Gary is also survived by his son Chris of Littleton, CO and daughter 
Teri Lingane and husband Justin of Denver, CO; two grandchildren Cody

Shelby Thornton, age 57, of WaKeeney, KS, passed away on Monday, 
August 10, 2020, at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital, WaKeeney. He 
was born April 17, 1963, to Eloise (Francis) and Dean Thornton, in 
Norton, KS. He attended Fort Hays State University, where he earned a 
bachelor’s degree in education.

Shelby greatly enjoyed teaching, and throughout his career he worked 
in the La Crosse, Linn and Hanover, WaKeeney, Palco, and Hill City 
schools. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the KNEA, and 
greatly enjoyed doing sports stats and serving as an umpire. Shelby 
genuinely loved supporting and being involved with the local youth and 
serving his community.

Shelby is survived by his parents; son Mason Thornton of Great Bend, 
KS; daughters Kayla Thornton of Great Bend, and Shari (Tony) Weber of 
Merriam, KS; grandchildren Blake, Paighton, and Anthony; brother Shon 
(Karen) Thornton of Garden City, KS; and sister Shannon Thornton of 
Bison, KS. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Brittani.

Per his wishes, no public services will be held for Shelby. Memorials

Mary F. Ward, 73, passed away August 9, 2020, at her home in Great 
Bend surrounded by members of her family. She was born on April 22, 
1947, in Robstown, Texas, the daughter of Manuel &amp; Manuela “Emma” 
(Granados) Moreno. She married Larry Dean Ward on April 27, 1963, at 
Great Bend.&nbsp; He died December 21, 2011.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Mary worked in housekeeping at 
Great Bend Health &amp; Rehab. She enjoyed spending time with her family
 and friends, especially her children, grandchildren and great 
grandchildren.

Survivors include, two sons, Jake Ward and wife Connie, and Kenneth 
L. Ward, all of Great Bend; three daughters, Shelley Ward of Great Bend,
 Melissa Schremmer and husband Tim of Hoisington, and Melinda Petz and

Frances Helen “Fran” Best, 83, died August 9, 2020, at Sandstone 
Heights Nursing Home, Little River, Kansas. She was born September 25, 
1936, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Alexander and Enid L. (Lambert) 
McKenna.

Fran graduated from Palco Rural High School in 1955, and took many 
courses throughout her lifetime at schools like, Barton County Community
 College, Parks School of Business, Colorado School of Mines, Hutchinson
 JUCO, Norriss Training, and Kansas State University.

A resident of Bushton since 1963, Fran was an assistant cashier at 
the Bushton State Bank for 28 years. She was a member of the United 
Methodist Church, Bushton, Kansas, where she was a former president of 
the United Methodist Women. Fran was also a member of the Order of the 
Eastern Star, a past president of the FHA, a den mother for the Boy 
Scouts, and a reading tutor. Fran was a talented seamstress and always 
had her sewing kit on hand wherever she went. She enjoyed making baby 
dolls for children of her friends and even kiln fired her own porcelain 
dolls. She was also an avid jewelry collector, designer, and creator.

On November 6, 1958, she married Robert Ray “Bob” Best in Hutchinson, Kansas. He preceded her in death on September 22, 2017.

Survivors include; a sister, Barbara Bunch and husband Rusty of 
Kanopolis; brother-in-law, Harlan Best and wife Patti; two 
sisters-in-law, Patty Harman and husband Joe, and Judy Maxfield, all of 
Hutchinson; many nieces and nephews, including, niece, Susan Sanders and
 husband Brian of Giltner, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by; her parents, Alexander and Enid L. 
McKenna; husband Bob; son, Curtis Ray Best; brothers, Billy Joe, Charley
 “Wayne”, Everett, and Robert McKenna; and sister, Margaret “Joan” 
McKenna.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday and Friday, and prior to service from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Gary James Ruder

Vernon Lee Pitts Sr., 89, resident of The Gardens at Barry Road, 
Kansas City, MO, 64153, departed this life for his home with The Lord 
Jesus Christ on August 8, 2020. Vern was born on August 23, 1930 in 
Jetmore, Hodgeman County, KS, the seventh child and fifth son to Oren 
Earl Pitts and Elizabeth Julia (Love) Pitts of Jetmore. He was raised on
 the family farm and attended the Jetmore Public Schools, graduating 
from Jetmore High School in 1949.

Vern was born into a family of musicians and learned to play the 
guitar at an early age. He played both acoustic and electric instruments
 as well as a banjo that he loved to pick and he continued to enjoy 
making music throughout his life. Most of the Pitts gatherings revolved 
around playing their various instruments and singing together. Vernon 
was drafted into the US Army in 1951, during the Korean War, serving two
 years of active duty in Greenland and Colorado and then in the US Army 
Reserve until August, 1959. He remains a member of the American Legion 
Post 0290, Jetmore, KS.

Vernon met his wife of nearly 69 years, Lola Jean (Gibbs) Pitts, 
during high school and the two enjoyed listening to and singing music 
and dancing together. Vernon and Lola were married on August 11, 1951 at
 the Methodist Church in Jetmore. They settled in Bucklin, KS in 1958 as
 Vern began a job with Lindas Lumber Co. He purchased the company in 
1961 and ran the Pitts Lumber Company successfully for 20 years until he
 sold it in 1981. He also owned the lumber yard in Dighton, KS for three
 years from 1967-69.

Vern and Lola were residents of Bucklin for 23 years and raised their
 family of four in that town. They were members of several civic 
organizations and both participated on bowling teams in Greensburg and 
Dodge City. They were active members of the Bucklin United Methodist 
Church. When Vern sold his lumber yard, the family moved to San Jose, 
CA, where Vern continued to work with Prince Construction. Vern and Lola
 were active members of South Bay Covenant Church in San Jose.

Vern retired in 1994 and they relocated back to the Midwest, settling
 in Kansas City, MO where their daughters and families were living. They
 joined River of Life Church in KC North and participated in the many 
activities there. Vern worked part-time in a small restoration business 
and handy-man service. He continued to enjoy playing his guitars with 
the church small groups in which they were part and made many friends 
along life’s way.

At the time of his death, Vern and Lola were members of Northpointe 
Church of KC North and were part of the founding members since its 
inception in 2006.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents and six of his siblings: 
Jesse Pitts, Audrey Pitts, Warren Pitts, Eunice Pitts Lampe, Willis 
Pitts and John Pitts, and one great granddaughter, Janeyah Pitts, San 
Jose, CA. He is survived by his wife, Lola; his two brothers, Norman 
Pitts, and Gerald Pitts (Donna), all of Jetmore, KS; his four children: 
Gloria Scheib, Kansas City, MO, Vern Pitts, Jr (Karen), San Jose, CA, 
Lorrie Sandoval (Michael), Martinez, CA and Aaron Pitts (DeeDee Daily), 
Kansas City, MO; his thirteen grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Andy
 Scheib (Lindsay), Sarah Woodard (Jason) and Joshua Scheib (Morgan), all
 of Kansas City, MO; Lana Winkler, (Brad), Roseville, CA, Caleb Pitts 
and Hannah Pitts, both of San Jose. CA; Marshall Sandoval-Clark (Katie),
 San Jose, CA and Allison Sandoval, Martinez, CA; Kiely and Isaac Pitts,
 Colton, OR; Malachi, Jeanette and Gabriel Pingleton, Kansas City, MO.; 
twelve great grandchildren: Quentin and Jordan Scheib, Kansas City, MO; 
Cameron Scheib, Joey Croy, Lincoln and Gunnar Woodard, Kansas City, MO; 
Ainsley and Riley Scheib, Kansas City, MO; Brooke and Logan Winkler,

and dear friends all across the country from every city in which they 
have lived.

2020 at 10:00 AM followed at 11:00 AM by a memorial service. Pastor 
Emeritus Gary Babb from Northpointe Church will officiate the service. 
There will be a graveside service at Fairmount Cemetery in Jetmore, KS, 
67854, on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at 11:00 AM, where Vern will be laid
 to rest. His grandson, Pastor Joshua Scheib, Kansas City, will

inception in 2006.Vern was preceded in death by his parents and six of his siblings: 
Jesse Pitts, Audrey Pitts, Warren Pitts, Eunice Pitts Lampe, Willis 
Pitts and John Pitts, and one great granddaughter, Janeyah Pitts, San 
Jose, CA. He is survived by his wife, Lola; his two brothers, Norman 
Pitts, and Gerald Pitts (Donna), all of Jetmore, KS; his four children: 
Gloria Scheib, Kansas City, MO, Vern Pitts, Jr (Karen), San Jose, CA, 
Lorrie Sandoval (Michael), Martinez, CA and Aaron Pitts (DeeDee Daily), 
Kansas City, MO; his thirteen grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Andy
 Scheib (Lindsay), Sarah Woodard (Jason) and Joshua Scheib (Morgan), all
 of Kansas City, MO; Lana Winkler, (Brad), Roseville, CA, Caleb Pitts 
and Hannah Pitts, both of San Jose. CA; Marshall Sandoval-Clark (Katie),
 San Jose, CA and Allison Sandoval, Martinez, CA; Kiely and Isaac Pitts,
 Colton, OR; Malachi, Jeanette and Gabriel Pingleton, Kansas City, MO.; 
twelve great grandchildren: Quentin and Jordan Scheib, Kansas City, MO; 
Cameron Scheib, Joey Croy, Lincoln and Gunnar Woodard, Kansas City, MO; 
Ainsley and Riley Scheib, Kansas City, MO; Brooke and Logan Winkler, 
Roseville, CA; Isaac Sandoval, Kansas City, MO and Sylvie 
Sandoval-Clark, San Jose, CA. and a host of wonderful nephews, nieces 
and dear friends all across the country from every city in which they 
have lived.A visitation for Vern will be held at Park Lawn Northland Chapel, 
1640 North State Route 291, Liberty, MO, 64068 on Wednesday, August 12, 
2020 at 10:00 AM followed at 11:00 AM by a memorial service. Pastor 
Emeritus Gary Babb from Northpointe Church will officiate the service. 
There will be a graveside service at Fairmount Cemetery in Jetmore, KS, 
67854, on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at 11:00 AM, where Vern will be laid
 to rest. His grandson, Pastor Joshua Scheib, Kansas City, will 
officiate the service. In lieu of flowers, the family desires any gifts 
in Vern’s honor to be given to the American Legion Post 0290, Jetmore, 
KS, 67854, or Northpointe Church, 8209 NW Twin Oaks Dr., Kansas City, MO
 64151.

Beverly Joan Combs passed away Saturday, August 8, 2020 peacefully at Via Christi Village - Hays at the age of 85 years. 

She was born November 24, 1934 in Burlington, KS to the late Loren and Wilma (Giesy) Garrett. After working for the Federal Government for 30 years she retired. She then went to college and received her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Kansas University (Rock Chalk). She then went on to be a Social Worker for many years. Bev was devoted to her 4 children Randy, Todd, Kim, and Kristy. She was a loving Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. Bev loved holidays and family get-togethers; any chance to spend time with her family was important to her. She especially loved when her grandchildren came to stay for the summer each year. She was adamant that we all attend swimming lessons just in case she ever ended up in a body of water bigger than a bathtub. She was preceded in death by two sons Randy Combs, Todd Combs.&nbsp; She will be sorely missed and survived by her sister Sherri O’Keefe, son Kim Combs and daughter Kristy Reincke, grandchildren: Casey Richardson, Kellie Stanley, Brooklyn Stephens, Dustin Combs, great grandchildren: Madison, Colton, Teagan, Jackson, Kobe, Laytin, Kole, Bella, and Emmie. In lieu of flowers, memorials suggested to The Alzheimer’s Association or the donor’s favorite charity. Graveside services in Burlington, KS will occur at a later date.
