Louis Tovar Sanchez, 97, died Thursday, October 8, 2020, in Dodge City.

He was born in the Mexican Village, Dodge City on August 19, 1923, the
 son of Soledad Sanchez and Florentina Tovar. He was a lifetime area 
resident and member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge 
City. He worked for Centel as a meter reader for many years, working for
 them he received the President’s Award and the Centel Corporation Man 
of the Year in the State of Kansas. He was very involved in the Dodge 
City Community being the first Hispanic mayor of Dodge City along with 
the first Hispanic elected to the city commission. He coached and 
umpired for the Dodge City Softball Association for 25 years becoming 
president of the Dodge City Recreation Commission along with Umpire in 
Chief. Louis also served as the chairman of the Diocesan and Development
 Drive, Great Plains Development Committee, Ford County Regional 
Planning Committee, Counsel on Aging, and was a member of the GI Forum. 
Louis credited his parents for instilling the values and ethics for how 
he led his life. He also was a resource to the Heritage Center in Dodge 
City regarding the Mexican Village. Louis and Linda were widely known 
for their ball room dancing skills.

On October 23, 1943 he married Linda E. Esquibel in Dodge City. She preceded him in death on November 20, 2007.

Survivors include: his 3 daughters, Linda Roush, Dodge City, Victoria
 Smith, Wichita, Kansas, and Veronica Sanchez, Leesburg, Virginia; 1 
daughter-in-law, Marilyn Sanchez, Mission, Kansas; 1 sister, Anita 
Morales, Wichita, Kansas; 2 grandsons, Kenneth Roush, Wichita, Kansas 
and Bradford Smith, Phoenix, Arizona; 2 granddaughters, Erin Peters, 
Mission, Kansas, Kansas and Kelley Sanchez, Connecticut; and 6 great 
grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Robert D. 
Sanchez, 5 brothers, Alvin, Rudy, Frank, Gavino, and Isaac Sanchez, and 6
 sisters, Lena, Ramona, Asuncion, Luz, Trinie, and Mary.

Services will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place.

The family suggests memorials to Senior Center Friendship Meals or 
the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe both in care of Ziegler Funeral 
Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, Kansas 67801.

Edward “Eddie, Ed” A. Loflin, age 82, passed away at the Greely County Hospital on Thursday, October 8, 2020. Ed was born on September 7, 1938, on a farm north west of Corondado, Kansas, the Son of Joe M. Loflin and Myrtle F. Olsen Loflin. Ed was the fourth of nine boys.

Ed had many careers. He was a heavy equipment operator, mason/brick layer, oil roughneck, Las Vegas black jack dealer, owner of the Leoti Pool Hall, supervisor of the Wichita County Road Department, served four years in the Navy on a sub tender. He enjoyed doing puzzles, going camping and most importantly driving every street in Leoti on a daily basis.

Ed was a member of the United Methodist Church in Leoti, Kansas.

Survivors include two children - Terry and Paul Tasker of Wichita, Kansas, and Joe and Joleen Loflin of Wichita, Kansas, six grandchildren; T J Tasker of Wichita, Kansas, Daily Tasker of Swawnee, Kansas, Tucker Tasker of Wichita, Kansas, Benjamin Loflin of Indianapolis, Indiana, Jacobe and Emily Loflin of Wichita, Kansas, and Joshua Loflin of Wichita, Kansas.

Ed was proceeded in death by his parents, four brothers; Walt, Ken, Art, and Waldo.

Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 10: a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Leoti, Kansas.

Betty Jo Pennington, her friends called her “BJ”, age 71 of WaKeeney KS and Farmington, NM, passed away on October 5, 2020. Betty was born on her family's farm in Collyer KS October 4th 1949. Betty grew up in the area of WaKeeney KS and moved to Farmington NM in 1974 where she would consider Farmington her home for the next 37 yrs. In 2011 she returned to WaKeeney due to her health and to be closer to her children and other family members.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Betty Jo enjoyed playing bingo, going to and entering in car shows with her late husband Don, going to the races and just loving spending time with her friends and family.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Betty Jo is survived by her son Bill (Joker) Gaschler of Collyer KS and grandson Lance&nbsp; Gaschler of Augusta KS; daughter Rene Covey and husband Justin and daughter Courtney of Yellville&nbsp; AR; granddaughter Grace' Glatz of Oklahoma City, OK; and many nieces and nephews who she was very close with and loved dearly.&nbsp;

Betty Jo was preceded in death by her husband Don Pennington; her daughter LyNette&nbsp; Proctor; her parents Art and Lois Cochran; brothers Leon Cochran, Howard Cochran, Ronnie Cochran,&nbsp; and Jerrold Cochran; her sisters Verna Lee Loomis and Royalyn Erickson; and nephews Steve Cochran and&nbsp; Howard (Howie) Cochran.

Irene Bernice Huelsmann, 92, of Oakley, died Wednesday, October 7, 2020,
 at Prairie Senior Living Complex, in Colby. She was born April 25, 
1928, to John and Catherine Boor. Irene graduated from Leoville High 
School in 1945. She met Edwin Huelsmann at a dance and on May 3, 1949, 
they were married at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Angelus. Irene enjoyed 
sewing, quilting, gardening, playing cards and dancing. She had a love 
for pug dogs and raised them for over 20 years. Irene was a member of 
St. Paul’s Church and St. Paul’s Altar Society. 
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Lucille Minard; 
brothers, Clarence, Arnold and Dennis and sisters, Mary Weber, Rosie 
Barber, Ethel Teach and Leona Weir. 
She is survived by her husband, Ed; children Ken (Karen) Huelsman, 
Lakewood, CO, Tom (Shirleen) Huelsman, Denver, CO, and Hank Huelsman, 
Denver, CO; brother, Ralph (Mary) Boor, Salina, KS; sister Dolores 
Davis, of Georgia and seven grandchildren.

Irene Bernice Huelsmann

Roger Carl Kruger, 58, passed away October 5, 2020, at St. Luke’s 
Hospital South, Overland Park. He was born on March 21, 1962, at Salida,
 Colo., to Roger Fredrick &amp; Ida Louise (Ward) Kruger.

A Great Bend resident for 25 years, Roger was an auto mechanic. He 
enjoyed fixing things and fishing. He especially loved to spend time 
with his family.

Survivors include, his son, Roger Scott Dzuck of Fountin, Colo.; his 
father, Roger Kruger of Wells, Nev.; his mother, Ida Kruger of Hays; a 
brother, Fredrick William Kruger of Hays; two sisters, Linda Louise 
Kruger and wife Terri Speckhardt of Wichita, and Elizabeth Kruger-Sehl 
of Russell; two nieces, Rayn Sehl and Rachael McCaslin; and four 
nephews, Cain Sehl, Strom Sehl, Brayden Kruger and Conner Kruger.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial 
services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 17, 2020, at 
Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Mike Joiner presiding. Those in

Roger Carl Kruger

Rollin L. Lohmeyer, 88, Hays, died Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at HaysMed.

He was born June 23, 1932 in Clatonia, 
Nebraska, the son of Clarence and Emma Louise (Koch) Lohmeyer.&nbsp; He was a
 graduate of Beatrice High School in the class of 1951.&nbsp; In 1952 he was 
drafted into the United States Army and served for 13 months in the 
Korean War.&nbsp; On November 24, 1957 he was united in marriage to JoNel 
Diggs in Beatrice, Nebraska, and they celebrated nearly 58 years of 
marriage before she preceded him in death on November 4, 2015.&nbsp; Rollin 
worked as a shoe salesman his entire career, starting as a salesman and 
working his way up to manager at Gallenkamp Shoe Store at The Mall in 
Hays from 1972 until the store closed in 1986.&nbsp; He then worked in the 
shoe department at JC Penney until his retirement in 1997.&nbsp; Rollin was a
 member of Trinity Lutheran Church.&nbsp; He enjoyed tinkering with his 
antique cars and Cushman Motor Scooters and loved spending time with his
 family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters: Sue 
Morelock of Manhattan, Sara Brandt and husband Larry of Dumas, TX, and 
Amy Gasper and husband Troy of Victoria, a sister-in-law: Ida Lohmeyer 
of Beatrice, NE, seven grandchildren: Megan Pfannenstiel and husband 
Tyler of Hays, Madalyn Morelock of Manhattan, Grace Ellis and husband 
Brandon of Dallas, TX, Hilary Brandt of Dumas, TX, Sam Brandt and wife 
Felisha of Dumas, TX, Dalton Gasper and wife Laramie of Victoria, and 
Dylan Gasper of Hays, and eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, JoNel, his parents, an infant daughter: Ruth Lee Lohmeyer, and a brother: DeWane Lohmeyer.

Rollin L. Lohmeyer

Lorene (Hunt) Keeten, daughter of John and Ethel (Smith) Hunt, was 
born August 8, 1924 in Pascola, Missouri, and passed away at Kearney 
Regional Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska on October 6, 2020, at the age of
 96.

She attended school in Missouri, before coming to Phillipsburg and graduating with the class of ’47.

Lorene was married to Carl Doan in Missouri.&nbsp; To this union, two 
children were born: Donnie and Doris.&nbsp; He preceded her in death.

On August 11, 1950, Lorene was married to Max Keeten in Phillipsburg, Kansas.&nbsp; They celebrated their 50th anniversary in August of 2000.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on July 25, 2001.

She was a punchboard operator for Southwestern Bell for several years
 until they moved the office to Hays.&nbsp; She also worked at Phillips 
County Hospital in Long Term Care for 22 years, retiring in 1995.

Lorene was a member of the Glade United Methodist Church.&nbsp; She loved 
to work in her “big” garden and would share her produce with everyone.&nbsp; 
She also enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, and quilting.&nbsp; She made many 
beautiful quilts for her children and grandchildren.

Her favorite times were spent gathered with family for a big meal.

Lorene was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, two 
sisters, Ethelene Greer and Dorothy Pearson, and daughter-in-law Nancy 
Doan.

Survivors include a son, Donnie Doan of Beloit, Kansas and a daughter
 Doris Hofaker (Richard) of Logan, Kansas;&nbsp; six grandchildren, Donald 
Doan (Shelly) of Wausau, Wisconsin, Debra Seaman (KC) of Homer, Alaska, 
Diane Lindsey (Ed) of Batavia, Ohio, Jay Hofaker (Paula) of Logan, 
Kansas, Jeff Hofaker (Stacey) of Sutton, Nebraska, Jerrod Hofaker (Jess)

born August 8, 1924 in Pascola, Missouri, and passed away at Kearney 
Regional Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska on October 6, 2020, at the age of
 96.She attended school in Missouri, before coming to Phillipsburg and graduating with the class of ’47.Lorene was married to Carl Doan in Missouri.&nbsp; To this union, two 
children were born: Donnie and Doris.&nbsp; He preceded her in death.On August 11, 1950, Lorene was married to Max Keeten in Phillipsburg, Kansas.&nbsp; They celebrated their 50th anniversary in August of 2000.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on July 25, 2001.She was a punchboard operator for Southwestern Bell for several years
 until they moved the office to Hays.&nbsp; She also worked at Phillips 
County Hospital in Long Term Care for 22 years, retiring in 1995.Lorene was a member of the Glade United Methodist Church.&nbsp; She loved 
to work in her “big” garden and would share her produce with everyone.&nbsp; 
She also enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, and quilting.&nbsp; She made many 
beautiful quilts for her children and grandchildren.Her favorite times were spent gathered with family for a big meal.Lorene was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, two 
sisters, Ethelene Greer and Dorothy Pearson, and daughter-in-law Nancy 
Doan.Survivors include a son, Donnie Doan of Beloit, Kansas and a daughter
 Doris Hofaker (Richard) of Logan, Kansas;&nbsp; six grandchildren, Donald

Raymond George Stearns Jr., age 67, passed away at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas on Tuesday, October 6, 2020. He was born on October 26, 1952, in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of Raymond G. and Mary Catherine Cranfield Stearns. Raymond had been a resident of the area since 1995. Raymond was a laborer in various agricultural settings and a member of the Gospel Fellowship Church of Shallow Water, Kansas.

Nelson Loyd Hager, 47, passed away suddenly on May 1, 2020, in Omaha,
 Nebraska. He was born on July 11, 1972, to Norman and Phyllis Hager, in
 O’Keene, Oklahoma, but spent much of his life in Kansas, graduating 
from Kansas State University with a degree in Agricultural Science.

Nelson’s passion in life were his wife and son, and secondly, the 
livestock business. He grew up showing sheep, cattle and hogs in the 
FFA, 4-H, and the Kansas Junior Angus Association, where he served as 
Junior Director two times. He won many awards, and after his show career
 ended he continued to be active in the KJAA by mentoring many kids with
 his drive and passion. In 2020, he was awarded National Advisor of the 
year, at the National Junior Angus show in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He worked diligently to provide self-confidence, self-worth, and 
perseverance to many junior boys and girls. To those that he mentored, 
he was more than a teacher, he was a friend, and a second dad. He will 
be dearly missed by all.

Nelson is survived by his wife Rachel Hager, his son, Aiden Hager, 
both of Great Bend, Kansas; his parents, Phyllis Hager of Stafford, 
Kansas; his father, Norman Hager, of Alva, Oklahoma; a brother, Tony 
Hager and wife Susan of Hutchinson, Kansas; a sister, Tammy and Vanessa 
Rios-Hager of Houston, Texas; a nephew, Ethan Hager of Hutchison, 
Kansas; and a niece, Jennifer Rutan and husband Lance, and their son, 
Colt, also of Hutchison, Kansas.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Graveside 
services with inurnment will be held at Golden Belt Memorial Park in 
Great Bend, at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 16, 2020, with Pastor Chris 
Lehew presiding. The family asks those in attendance to wear masks and 
social distance.

Magdalen “Maggie” Gassmann was born May 29, 1925 in Park, KS to Jakob 
and Rosa (Herrman) Weber. She passed away at the age of 95 on October 6,
 2020 at the Gove County Medical Center LTC. 
 Maggie grew up in Park, KS and attended Park Grade School. 
Magdalen’s growing up years were filled with a lot of hard work that 
included, sewing, cleaning, raising and milking cows, hogs and chickens,
 canning everything possible from the large garden. A strong work ethic
 was nourished that would carry through her entire adult life. She 
married Conrad Gassmann on November 6, 1946 at the Sacred Heart Church 
in Park. They lived on a farm outside of Grinnell, KS until they 
purchased a farm one mile west of Dresden, KS. Their union was Blessed
 with 10 children-Francis, Anthony, George, Paul, Lawrence, Ralph, Mary,
 Ann, Donna, and Theresa. Magdalen was very active in the Immaculate 
Conception parish in Leoville, where she was a CCD teacher, Altar 
Society and Daughters of Isabella. She also enjoyed involvement in the 
Dresden Community Guild and American Legion Auxiliary. Magdalen and 
Conrad operated the farm until Conrad passed away in February 1975. 
Maggie continued the farming operation until 1981 when she purchased her
 parent’s home in Park, KS. She lived in Park and was very active in 
that community as well, serving as the Sacred Heart Church sacristan for
 over 25 years. Even in her “retirement” years, Maggie was very involved
 with the Sacred Heart Prayer Group, CCD teacher, Daughters of Isabella,
 Altar Society and very supportive of Pro-Life. She lived in Park until 
becoming a resident of the Gove County Long Term Care in 2012. 
 Being a devout Catholic, Maggie was a faithful viewer of the Eternal
 Word Television Network (EWTN) and said the rosary daily throughout her
 lifetime. Maggie was always an excellent cook, known for her chicken 
&amp; noodles, blackberry dumplings, carrot cake, cookie sheet cake, and
 popcorn balls.
 Maggie was treasured and loved by many (especially her family) and 
lived a very active and happy life with her family and friends. She was 
known for her beautiful, warm smile and caring and giving heart. 
 Maggie is survived by her children: Francis Gassmann and wife Cindy 
of Garden Plain, KS, Anthony Gassmann and wife Peggy of Dresden, KS, 
George Gassmann and wife Vickie of New Almelo, KS, Lawrence Gassmann of 
Manhattan, KS, Mary Gassmann of Indianapolis, IN, Ann Gassmann of

Phyllis Nadine Luerman, 81, passed away October 8, 2020, at her home 
in Hoisington.&nbsp; She was born June 30, 1939, in Hoisington, to Jesse and 
Bessie (Smith) Neal.&nbsp; Phyllis married John H. Luerman, Sr. Dec. 29, 
1962, in Hoisington.&nbsp; He survives.

Phyllis, a lifetime Hoisington area resident, was a member of the 
V.F.W. Post 7428 Auxiliary and American Legion Post 286 Auxiliary.&nbsp; She 
was a telephone operator in Hoisington for many years, also holding 
employment at Gibson's, Dairy Queen and Duckwall's.&nbsp; Phyllis was a 
member of the Red Hat Ladies, previously served on the Susank city 
council and enjoyed playing cards.

Survivors include her husband John of the home; three sons, John 
Luerman and wife Amy of rural Susank, Andy Luerman and wife Becky of 
Ashland and Billy Luerman of Susank; six grandchildren, Shyla Goodnight 
(Aaron), Anthony Luerman, Jay Luerman (Joanna), Shelby Luerman, Damon 
Luerman (Brooke) and J.J. Luerman; two great grandchildren, Lane Luerman
 and Tucker Goodnight; one sister, Sallie Hager of Claflin; and two 
brothers Cecil Neal of Oregon, Wis. and Willis Neal of Overland Park.

She was preceded in death by one brother, William Neal; four sisters,

Rosetta Aschenbrenner, 75, of Ellis 
passed Saturday, October 3, 2020, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was born 
July 27, 1945, to Clarence and Lillian Schmidt in Hays. Rosetta attended
 Ellis High School. On November 27, 1961, Rosetta married Robert 
Aschenbrenner at St. Mary’s Church in Ellis.

Retiring from Enersys in July 2019 
after many years of employment, Rosetta took joy in spoiling her 
grandkids, playing bingo and rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs and KU 
basketball teams.

Survivors include four children: Rose 
(Jeff) Hertel, Ellis; Ricky Aschenbrenner, Wichita; Rhonda (Evan) 
Hadley, Hays; and Roy (Holly) Aschenbrenner, Ellis. Siblings include 
Harold (Myrtle) Schmidt, Opelousas, La; John (Twila) Schmidt, Tina 
(Dave) Keller, and Kenny (Kim) Schmidt, all of Ellis. Grandchildren 
include Kim Robinson, David Bieker, Jessica Bradza, Kyle Hadley, Sarah 
Pletcher, Rebecca Bittel, Hannah Aschenbrenner and Hayden 
Aschenbrenner.&nbsp; Surviving great-grandchildren are Hadlee, Jace and Jett 
Brazda, Emma Bieker, Camilla Robinson and Drake Pletcher.

Rosetta was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her parents, and two sisters: Betty Barenberg and Darlene Schmidt.

 Ellis High School. On November 27, 1961, Rosetta married Robert 
Aschenbrenner at St. Mary’s Church in Ellis.Retiring from Enersys in July 2019 
after many years of employment, Rosetta took joy in spoiling her 
grandkids, playing bingo and rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs and KU 
basketball teams.Survivors include four children: Rose 
(Jeff) Hertel, Ellis; Ricky Aschenbrenner, Wichita; Rhonda (Evan) 
Hadley, Hays; and Roy (Holly) Aschenbrenner, Ellis. Siblings include 
Harold (Myrtle) Schmidt, Opelousas, La; John (Twila) Schmidt, Tina 
(Dave) Keller, and Kenny (Kim) Schmidt, all of Ellis. Grandchildren 
include Kim Robinson, David Bieker, Jessica Bradza, Kyle Hadley, Sarah 
Pletcher, Rebecca Bittel, Hannah Aschenbrenner and Hayden 
Aschenbrenner.&nbsp; Surviving great-grandchildren are Hadlee, Jace and Jett 
Brazda, Emma Bieker, Camilla Robinson and Drake Pletcher.Rosetta was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her parents, and two sisters: Betty Barenberg and Darlene Schmidt.Arrangements are pending at this time.

Longtime Goodland, KS resident Deanna Kay Whisler, 74, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2020, at Topside Manor in Goodland.

Deanna was born on July 11, 1946, in Colby, KS to Kenneth C. and Dorothy F. (Morton) Whisler.&nbsp; She was one of six children.&nbsp; She attended school at Central Elementary School in Goodland until the age of 9 when she diagnosed with Tuberculosis Meningitis, which at that age was very fatal.&nbsp; After 8 months in a coma, Deanna had to learn to walk and talk all over again. &nbsp;

Due to her illness, Deanna was mostly disabled for the rest of her life, far surpassing her life expectancy.&nbsp; However, Deanna didn’t let this slow her down.&nbsp; She was a joy to her entire family, and enjoyed spending time doing crossword puzzles.&nbsp; She also had a love for horses.

Preceding her in death were her parents, and 2 nephews Trevor Walker and Conrad Whisler.

She is survived by her 3 brothers, Gary and Karen Wiens of Hillsboro, KS, Kent and Barb Whisler of Manhattan, KS and Gary and Josie Whisler of Atwood, KS; 2 sisters Mary Jo and Troy Funk of Holyoke, CO and Karen and Terry Peck of Goodland, KS.&nbsp; She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Deanna was cremated and private family services will be held in the Goodland Cemetery with Pastor Brent Flanders officiating.

Deanna Kay Whisler

Virginia Mae (Birbeck) Howe (Ginny) of Hays, Kansas, retired special education teacher, passed away October 4, 2020, at Good Samaritan Society Hays. She was 83. Ginny was born November 8, 1936 on a farm outside of Stanberry, Missouri to Ray and Mary Ellen (Evans) Birbeck.&nbsp; She married Virgil Keith Howe on June 3, 1956 in King City.

She started school in a one room country schoolhouse and graduated from King City High School in 1954.&nbsp; She attended Northwestern Missouri State College graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Education and Home Economics degree. She later attended Western Illinois University earning a Masters of Education degree in Special Education. In 1988 she began working for USD 489 serving both Victoria High School and Thomas More Prep-Marian as a special education teacher. She retired in 1998.

Before settling in Hays, Ginny and Virgil lived in several cities including Albuquerque, New Mexico, Ames, Iowa, Natchitoches, Louisiana, and Macomb, Illinois . Ginny was an active member of every church she belonged to always singing in the choir. While in Hays, she was a member of The First Presbyterian Church, PEO, actively helped her husband with his Rotary endeavors and, through Rotary, became a Paul Harris Fellow.

Once she and Virgil were retired, they hit the road. She claimed her suitcase was always packed. They visited all 50 states as well as several countries abroad including England, Scotland, Yugoslavia, Russia, Brazil, and Argentina among many others. Ginny purchased a souvenir spoon from each place she visited. The collection eventually spanned an entire wall.

She is survived by her husband, Virgil, of 64 + years; a daughter, Christine and husband Mark Milford, of Kingman, KS; a son, Daniel and wife Amy Howe of Lexington KY: six grandchildren, Jessica Quinn and husband Sean Greenlee of Haysville, KS; Grant Quinn and fiancé, Caroline Houghtelling of Omaha, NE; Ian Quinn and wife, Jessica of Kingman, KS; Wesley Howe of Lexington, KY, Austin Howe and fiancé, Sarah Scott of Fort Myers, FL; and Zachary Howe of Lexington, KY: two step-grandsons, Jacob Milford of Wichita, KS and Riley Milford of Kingman, KS: three great grandchildren, Vivienne, Adele, and Rhett Greenlee of Haysville, KS: sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Jack Bush of Dallas, TX; sister-in-law, Mimi Birbeck of Mankato, MN and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Lester Birbeck, Robert Birbeck, and Herbert Birbeck.

The family is planning a small private service. When things are safer, and we can be together again, the family will have a Celebration of Life event in hopes that many can attend.

Virginia Mae Howe

Fr. Myron G. Flax, O.F.M.Cap., of Via Christi Village Care Center in Hays, Kans., a veteran of 39 years as a Catholic missionary in the South Pacific, and eldest member of the Capuchin Province of Mid-America, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2020, just four days after his 92nd birthday.

Fifth of the nine children of Godfrey and Catherine (Weber) Flax, Father was born on Sept. 30, 1928, in Ransom, Kan., and named Godfrey after his father.

He attended Trego County public schools, had already finished high school, and was working on the family farm, when at 22 he decided to study for the priesthood. Because of the importance at that time of knowing Latin, the authorities asked him to repeat high school at St. Francis Seminary High School in Victoria, Kans. Thus he joined a class of early teenage freshmen and became a father figure to his boarding school classmates. After further studies at St. Fidelis College&nbsp;in Herman, Pa., and Capuchin College in Washington, D.C., he was ordained a priest by Bishop Frederick Freking of Salina on February 10, 1964.

Meanwhile he joined the Capuchin-Franciscan Order, changing his name to Myron, making a yearlong novitiate at Annapolis, Md., and making profession in the Order on July 14, 1958.

His first assignment as a priest was in Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific, where he became the first non-indigenous person to enter the Gambe area in the land of the Huli people. He served about ten years among the Huli people near Tari, a year among the Wiru people at Pangia, two years among the Imbongu people at Ialibu, and four years among the people of the lower Mendi valley, before being named rector of the cathedral parish in Mendi in 1978, a post he held for 24 years. During this time he also used his skills as a mechanic in keeping a large fleet of missionary vehicles working under adverse conditions.

Fr. Flax returned to the States in 2003, and after theological updating at Aquinas Institute in St. Louis, served eight years as a confessor&nbsp;at the Catholic Chapel in the Citadel Mall in Colorado Springs. A severe hearing loss forced him to retire from this ministry in 2011. He resided then at St. Fidelis Friary in Victoria until February, 2020, when he moved to Via Christi Village.

Father was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Flax and Helen Schuler, and five brothers, Ignatius, Lawrence, Leonard, Herman J., and Eugene. His sister, Sr. Mary Ann Flax, C.S.J., of Lexington, Nebr., is the sole surviving member of his immediate family.

Reception of the body and morning prayer will be celebrated at 8 a.m., Monday,&nbsp; Oct. 12, 2020, in the Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, followed by Visitation until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Friars' Plot at the St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria. Archbishop Stephen Reichert, O.F.M.Cap., archbishop emeritus of Madang and former bishop of Mendi, will be the main celebrant and homilist. Sr. Mary Ann Flax will serve as lector, and a number of Fr. Myron's nephews will be the pallbearers.

Father Myron Flax, O.F.M.Cap.

Carolyn Mae Donecker, 85, passed away Oct. 7, 2020, at Country Living
 of Lyons. She was born May 16, 1935, in rural Claflin, to Herman Walter
 and Emma Christine (Schlessiger) Drews. Carolyn received her nursing 
degree from Dominican School of Nursing. She married Donald Harry 
Donecker Oct. 14, 1956, in Claflin. He died March 2, 2004.

A lifetime resident of the Claflin area, also living a period of time
 in Great Bend, Carolyn worked as an RN for CKMC for 25 years and Joseph
 Gateno, OBGYN, for 13 years and later as a workers’ compensation case 
manager, until her retirement in 2012. Her volunteerism was demonstrated
 in coordinating blood drives in Claflin for the American Red Cross, 
teaching Lamaze classes and dedicating time to Lutheran Ladies' Aide. 
Carolyn was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Claflin, where she taught 
Sunday School and Midweek classes.

Survivors include two sons, Craig Donecker and wife Anna of Great 
Bend and Kevin Donecker and wife Elaine of Claflin; one daughter, 
Cherlyn Maier and husband Rodney of Claflin; son at heart, Hugo Fonseca 
and wife Gaby of Costa Rica; one sister, Claudine Dietz and husband 
Lester of Denver; nine grandchildren, Jonathan Donecker (Misty), Jeffery
 Donecker (Megan), Ashlee Bevan (Derek), Aaron Maier, Aimee Ingermanson 
(Wes), Andrew Maier, Julie Donecker, Matthew Donecker and Melissa 
Donecker; and six great grandchildren, Philip Donecker, JoAnna Donecker,
 Hunter Donecker, Gage Donecker, Temperance Donecker and Taylin Bevan. 
She was preceded in passing by her husband Don and one sister, Carma 
Feist (Don, surviving).

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 2020, at Zion 
Lutheran Church, Claflin, with Pastor Daniel Harders and Rev. Roger 
Schepman. Interment will follow at Claflin Cemetery, Claflin. Visitation

Carolyn Mae Donecker

Agnes Arlene Lewis, 82, of Colby, was called home on Tuesday, October 6,
 2020, at Citizens Medical Center. 

She was born May 30, 1938, in 
Sheridan County to Albert and Ella (Hesterberg) Detjen. On August 24, 
1963, Agnes married Larry Lewis and to this union, two children were 
born. When the kids were young, Agnes ran a daycare and did ironing for 
people. Over the years, she also worked as a bank teller at several 
banks. She also was a school bus driver and really enjoyed all the 
little kids. She cleaned many offices around town and served the 
breakfast buffet at the Holiday Inn Express. 

Agnes enjoyed making 
ceramics, going to garage sales and cheering on the Denver Broncos and 
KU Jayhawks. She volunteered every Wednesday as a Pink Lady at the 
hospital. However, her favorite pastime was tending to her huge garden.

She is survived by her children, Steven Lewis and Sheri Staab, both of 
Colby and grandsons, Kaden Staab (fiancée Callie) and Kyler Staab. She 
will be greatly missed by all.

Agnes Arlene Lewis, 82, of Colby, was called home on Tuesday, October 6,
 2020, at Citizens Medical Center. She was born May 30, 1938, in 
Sheridan County to Albert and Ella (Hesterberg) Detjen. On August 24, 
1963, Agnes married Larry Lewis and to this union, two children were 
born. When the kids were young, Agnes ran a daycare and did ironing for 
people. Over the years, she also worked as a bank teller at several 
banks. She also was a school bus driver and really enjoyed all the 
little kids. She cleaned many offices around town and served the 
breakfast buffet at the Holiday Inn Express. Agnes enjoyed making 
ceramics, going to garage sales and cheering on the Denver Broncos and 
KU Jayhawks. She volunteered every Wednesday as a Pink Lady at the 
hospital. However, her favorite pastime was tending to her huge garden. 
Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; husband Larry and sisters Arleta Detjen and Elta Rall. 
She is survived by her children, Steven Lewis and Sheri Staab, both of 
Colby and grandsons, Kaden Staab (fiancée Callie) and Kyler Staab. She

Terence "Terry" John Hammerschmidt, age 67, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Monday, October 5, 2020, at Hays Medical Center. He was born July 21, 1953, in Hays to Clarence and Bernita (Glassman) Hammerschmidt. Terry worked alongside his dad in the family business Clem’s Inc. for many years. He was also a long-time volunteer at the ARC thrift shop for over 30 years. Terry was heavily involved in the Special Olympics participating in basketball and speed walking and was inducted into the State of Kansas Special Olympics Hall of Fame in 1984 for his accomplishments in speed walking. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Hays. He is survived by a brother, Mark Hammerschmidt of Hays; two sisters, Sue O’Connor and husband Deron of Hays and Lori Schmidt and husband Scott of Hays; nephews, Cameron O’Connor, Chandler Schmidt, Braden Schmidt, Jason Pfannenstiel and Michael O’Connor; nieces, Keisha Schmidt and Lanie Pfeifer; 4 great nephews; 2 great nieces as well as his beloved dog, Ally. Rennie L. Burress, 79, passed away October 7, 2020, at Via Christi 
St. Francis. He was born March 1, 1941, to August &amp; Veta (Gregory) 
Burress, at Mountainburg, Ark. He married Helen Helfrich on August 21, 
1965 in Ellinwood. She survives.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Rennie was a mechanic, welder, 
security guard, but mostly a hot roder. He loved racing, building hot 
rods and carpentry. He especially loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include, his mother, Veta Burress; his wife, Helen Burress 
of the home; a daughter, Renee Burress of Great Bend; a grandson, 
Michael Burress; two brothers, Glen Burress of Ellinwood, and Leland 
McAlister of Larned; and three sisters, Frieda Jobes of Great Bend, 
Wanda (Ron) Dodson of Hays, Laveta (Larry) Furthmeyer of Gorham. He was 
preceded in death by his father, August Burress; and a sister, Gloria 
Barrientez.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Graveside 
services with inurnment will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 15,
 2020, at Great Bend Cemetery North, with Byron Barreintez presiding. 
The family requests those in attendance to wear masks and social 
distance. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be 
designated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or St. Labre Indian 
School, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Jasper “Jack” Joseph Hamel, 96, Hays, died Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at Via Christi Village.

He was born June 20, 1924 on the family
 farm north of Damar, the son of Alex and Elsie (Thibault) Hamel.&nbsp; On 
June 1, 1948 he was united in marriage to Mona Jean Mongeau at St. Ann’s
 Catholic Church in Zurich, and they celebrated 72 years of marriage.&nbsp; 
He worked for White Hawk Oil Company and was a farmer.&nbsp; His memberships 
included St. Ann’s Parish in Zurich, St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic 
Church in Hays, and St. Anthony Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council
 #1857.&nbsp; He enjoyed tinkering, gardening, and knew everything about the 
oilfield in Western Kansas and farmland all around.&nbsp; Jasper was ornery 
and friendly to all, never knowing a stranger.

Survivors include his wife Mona of 
Hays, two sons: Dan Hamel and wife Lori of Wichita and David Hamel and 
wife Anjanette of Hays, four daughters: Sheryl Rempe and husband 
Francis, Mary Rempe and husband Walter, and Carol Mendoza and husband 
Robert, all of Wichita, and Pam Mayers and husband Stan of Hays, a 
sister: Ida May Lesage of Hays, a sister-in-law: Antoinette Hamel of 
Hill City, 15 grandchildren: Stacey Heiman, Kevin Rempe, Craig Rempe, 
Kerrie Rempe, Tim Rempe, Chris Rempe, Darcy Lescher, Jeff Maddox, Alex

Mavis Nadine King, 86, of Alton, KS, died on Saturday, October 3, at 
the Downs Care &amp; Rehabilitation Center of Downs, KS. &nbsp;She was born 
in rural Luray, KS on February 13, 1934 to the late Charles L. and Maye 
E. (Taylor) Robinson.

Nadine graduated from Osborne High School in 1952. &nbsp;She later married Karl A. King.

She worked as a clerk at the Corner&nbsp;Grocery Store in Alton, KS. &nbsp;She also worked at&nbsp;the telephone exchange in Alton, KS.

Nadine was&nbsp;preceded in death by her husband Karl in 2018 and&nbsp;is survived by her brother, Duane Robinson of Downs, KS.

Clarence F. Legleiter, 69, Hays, died Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville.

He was born August 21, 1951 in Hays, 
the son of Francis and Mary Ann (Dinkel) Legleiter.&nbsp; He was a graduate 
of St. Joseph Military Academy in the class of 1969 and earned an 
Associate’s Degree from Barton County Community College, becoming a 
medical lab technician.&nbsp; On July 22, 1972 he was united in marriage to 
Carol M. Gabel at St. Joseph Church in Hays.&nbsp; He worked in construction,
 was a farmer, and a chemistry supervisor at Quest Diagnostics.&nbsp; His 
memberships included St. Joseph Catholic Church and the St. Joseph Third
 Degree Knights of Columbus Council #1325.&nbsp; He loved farming, carpentry 
and remodeling, and vegetable gardening, especially growing tomatoes.

Survivors include his wife Carol, of 
the home in Hays, his mother, Mary Ann Legleiter of Liebenthal, three 
sons:&nbsp; Frank Legleiter and wife Donna of Salina, Leon Legleiter and wife
 Carrie of Hays, and Matthew Legleiter and fiancé Karlee Brunner of 
Hays, two brothers: Robert Legleiter and wife Sue of Hays and Duane 
Legleiter and wife Monica of LaCrosse, five sisters: Janett Copeland and
 husband Frank of Greeley, CO, Shirley Haselhorst and husband Art of 
Antonino, Lilly Binder and husband Ernie of Munjor, Evelyn Younker and 
husband Darold of Munjor, and Luella Amrein and husband Craig of 
Lawrence, two grandchildren: Kelton and Addilyn, and numerous nieces and

Donna Lee Lawver (Rush)

Mary Ann Taylor, 92, of Waldo, Kansas, passed away Monday, October 5, 2020, at her residence in Waldo. She was born December 24, 1927, in rural Holyrood, Kansas to Joseph and Mary Lanzl Rous.

Mary’s surviving family include her three daughters, Mary Louise Taylor of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Lois Lund of Waldo, Kansas and Karen Taylor Brothersen (Pepper) of Guernsey, Iowa; two sons, Ben Taylor of Osborne, Kansas and Roy Taylor (Debbie) of Lucas, Kansas; sister, Loretta Handlin of Newton, North Carolina; two grandsons, Jason Lund (Jennifer) of Waldo, Kansas and Nathan Lund (Krista) of Beloit, Kansas; six great grandchildren, Rachel Lund, Tyler Lund, Ashton Lund, Shelton Lund, Parker Lund, Kassandra Lund; sister-in-law Mardella Rous and nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband Max C. Taylor, 1998; son-in-law, Monty Lund; brothers, Robert, Martin and Laurence Rous.

As a RN graduate of Asbury School of Nursing, she worked at Osborne County Hospital and was the Osborne County Health Nurse until her retirement. She was an avid gardener and prolific quilter.

A Private Family Graveside service will be held at a later date in the Cheyenne Cemetery north of Luray.  No memorial has been established.

She was born December 24, 1927, in rural Holyrood, Kansas to Joseph and Mary Lanzl Rous.Mary’s surviving family include her three daughters, Mary Louise Taylor of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Lois Lund of Waldo, Kansas and Karen Taylor Brothersen (Pepper) of Guernsey, Iowa; two sons, Ben Taylor of Osborne, Kansas and Roy Taylor (Debbie) of Lucas, Kansas; sister, Loretta Handlin of Newton, North Carolina; two grandsons, Jason Lund (Jennifer) of Waldo, Kansas and Nathan Lund (Krista) of Beloit, Kansas; six great grandchildren, Rachel Lund, Tyler Lund, Ashton Lund, Shelton Lund, Parker Lund, Kassandra Lund; sister-in-law Mardella Rous and nieces and nephews.Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband Max C. Taylor, 1998; son-in-law, Monty Lund; brothers, Robert, Martin and Laurence Rous.As a RN graduate of Asbury School of Nursing, she worked at Osborne County Hospital and was the Osborne County Health Nurse until her retirement. She was an avid gardener and prolific quilter.A Private Family Graveside service will be held at a later date in the Cheyenne Cemetery north of Luray. No memorial has been established.
