Shelby Thornton, age 57, of WaKeeney, KS, passed away on Monday, 
August 10, 2020, at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital, WaKeeney. He 
was born April 17, 1963, to Eloise (Francis) and Dean Thornton, in 
Norton, KS. He attended Fort Hays State University, where he earned a 
bachelor’s degree in education.

Shelby greatly enjoyed teaching, and throughout his career he worked 
in the La Crosse, Linn and Hanover, WaKeeney, Palco, and Hill City 
schools. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the KNEA, and 
greatly enjoyed doing sports stats and serving as an umpire. Shelby 
genuinely loved supporting and being involved with the local youth and 
serving his community.

Shelby is survived by his parents; son Mason Thornton of Great Bend, 
KS; daughters Kayla Thornton of Great Bend, and Shari (Tony) Weber of 
Merriam, KS; grandchildren Blake, Paighton, and Anthony; brother Shon 
(Karen) Thornton of Garden City, KS; and sister Shannon Thornton of 
Bison, KS. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Brittani.

Per his wishes, no public services will be held for Shelby. Memorials
 are suggested to Trego Recreation Commission (TRC). Donations may be

Mary F. Ward, 73, passed away August 9, 2020, at her home in Great 
Bend surrounded by members of her family. She was born on April 22,

husband Carl of Olathe; her mother, Emma Moreno; 14 grandchildren,

Dylan Elsen, Ryan Ward, Derek Ward, Kelsea Ward, Madison Ward, Abbie

Frances Helen “Fran” Best, 83, died August 9, 2020, at Sandstone 
Heights Nursing Home, Little River, Kansas. She was born September 25, 
1936, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Alexander and Enid L. (Lambert) 
McKenna.

Fran graduated from Palco Rural High School in 1955, and took many 
courses throughout her lifetime at schools like, Barton County Community
 College, Parks School of Business, Colorado School of Mines, Hutchinson
 JUCO, Norriss Training, and Kansas State University.

A resident of Bushton since 1963, Fran was an assistant cashier at 
the Bushton State Bank for 28 years. She was a member of the United 
Methodist Church, Bushton, Kansas, where she was a former president of 
the United Methodist Women. Fran was also a member of the Order of the 
Eastern Star, a past president of the FHA, a den mother for the Boy 
Scouts, and a reading tutor. Fran was a talented seamstress and always 
had her sewing kit on hand wherever she went. She enjoyed making baby 
dolls for children of her friends and even kiln fired her own porcelain 
dolls. She was also an avid jewelry collector, designer, and creator.

On November 6, 1958, she married Robert Ray “Bob” Best in Hutchinson, Kansas. He preceded her in death on September 22, 2017.

Survivors include; a sister, Barbara Bunch and husband Rusty of 
Kanopolis; brother-in-law, Harlan Best and wife Patti; two 
sisters-in-law, Patty Harman and husband Joe, and Judy Maxfield, all of 
Hutchinson; many nieces and nephews, including, niece, Susan Sanders and
 husband Brian of Giltner, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by; her parents, Alexander and Enid L. 
McKenna; husband Bob; son, Curtis Ray Best; brothers, Billy Joe, Charley
 “Wayne”, Everett, and Robert McKenna; and sister, Margaret “Joan” 
McKenna.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday and Friday, and prior to service from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 15, 2020, 
at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Pastor Diana Webster presiding. 
Inurnment will be in Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery, Wakeeney, at a later

Gary James Ruder

Vernon Lee Pitts Sr., 89, resident of The Gardens at Barry Road, 
Kansas City, MO, 64153, departed this life for his home with The Lord 
Jesus Christ on August 8, 2020. Vern was born on August 23, 1930 in 
Jetmore, Hodgeman County, KS, the seventh child and fifth son to Oren 
Earl Pitts and Elizabeth Julia (Love) Pitts of Jetmore. He was raised on
 the family farm and attended the Jetmore Public Schools, graduating 
from Jetmore High School in 1949.

Vern was born into a family of musicians and learned to play the 
guitar at an early age. He played both acoustic and electric instruments
 as well as a banjo that he loved to pick and he continued to enjoy 
making music throughout his life. Most of the Pitts gatherings revolved 
around playing their various instruments and singing together. Vernon 
was drafted into the US Army in 1951, during the Korean War, serving two
 years of active duty in Greenland and Colorado and then in the US Army 
Reserve until August, 1959. He remains a member of the American Legion 
Post 0290, Jetmore, KS.

Vernon met his wife of nearly 69 years, Lola Jean (Gibbs) Pitts, 
during high school and the two enjoyed listening to and singing music 
and dancing together. Vernon and Lola were married on August 11, 1951 at
 the Methodist Church in Jetmore. They settled in Bucklin, KS in 1958 as
 Vern began a job with Lindas Lumber Co. He purchased the company in 
1961 and ran the Pitts Lumber Company successfully for 20 years until he
 sold it in 1981. He also owned the lumber yard in Dighton, KS for three
 years from 1967-69.

Vern and Lola were residents of Bucklin for 23 years and raised their
 family of four in that town. They were members of several civic 
organizations and both participated on bowling teams in Greensburg and 
Dodge City. They were active members of the Bucklin United Methodist 
Church. When Vern sold his lumber yard, the family moved to San Jose, 
CA, where Vern continued to work with Prince Construction. Vern and Lola
 were active members of South Bay Covenant Church in San Jose.

Vern retired in 1994 and they relocated back to the Midwest, settling
 in Kansas City, MO where their daughters and families were living. They
 joined River of Life Church in KC North and participated in the many 
activities there. Vern worked part-time in a small restoration business 
and handy-man service. He continued to enjoy playing his guitars with 
the church small groups in which they were part and made many friends 
along life’s way.

At the time of his death, Vern and Lola were members of Northpointe 
Church of KC North and were part of the founding members since its 
inception in 2006.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents and six of his siblings: 
Jesse Pitts, Audrey Pitts, Warren Pitts, Eunice Pitts Lampe, Willis 
Pitts and John Pitts, and one great granddaughter, Janeyah Pitts, San 
Jose, CA. He is survived by his wife, Lola; his two brothers, Norman 
Pitts, and Gerald Pitts (Donna), all of Jetmore, KS; his four children: 
Gloria Scheib, Kansas City, MO, Vern Pitts, Jr (Karen), San Jose, CA, 
Lorrie Sandoval (Michael), Martinez, CA and Aaron Pitts (DeeDee Daily), 
Kansas City, MO; his thirteen grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Andy
 Scheib (Lindsay), Sarah Woodard (Jason) and Joshua Scheib (Morgan), all
 of Kansas City, MO; Lana Winkler, (Brad), Roseville, CA, Caleb Pitts 
and Hannah Pitts, both of San Jose. CA; Marshall Sandoval-Clark (Katie),
 San Jose, CA and Allison Sandoval, Martinez, CA; Kiely and Isaac Pitts,

There will be a graveside service at Fairmount Cemetery in Jetmore, KS, 
67854, on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at 11:00 AM, where Vern will be laid

Vernon Lee Pitts Sr.

Beverly Joan Combs passed away Saturday, August 8, 2020 peacefully at Via Christi Village - Hays at the age of 85 years. 

She was born November 24, 1934 in Burlington, KS to the late Loren and Wilma (Giesy) Garrett. After working for the Federal Government for 30 years she retired. She then went to college and received her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Kansas University (Rock Chalk). She then went on to be a Social Worker for many years. Bev was devoted to her 4 children Randy, Todd, Kim, and Kristy. She was a loving Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. Bev loved holidays and family get-togethers; any chance to spend time with her family was important to her. She especially loved when her grandchildren came to stay for the summer each year. She was adamant that we all attend swimming lessons just in case she ever ended up in a body of water bigger than a bathtub. She was preceded in death by two sons Randy Combs, Todd Combs.&nbsp; She will be sorely missed and survived by her sister Sherri O’Keefe, son Kim Combs and daughter Kristy Reincke, grandchildren: Casey Richardson, Kellie Stanley, Brooklyn Stephens, Dustin Combs, great grandchildren: Madison, Colton, Teagan, Jackson, Kobe, Laytin, Kole, Bella, and Emmie.  </figure>Beverly Joan Combs passed away Saturday, August 8, 2020 peacefully at Via Christi Village - Hays at the age of 85 years. She was born November 24, 1934 in Burlington, KS to the late Loren and Wilma (Giesy) Garrett. After working for the Federal Government for 30 years she retired. She then went to college and received her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Kansas University (Rock Chalk). She then went on to be a Social Worker for many years. Bev was devoted to her 4 children Randy, Todd, Kim, and Kristy. She was a loving Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. Bev loved holidays and family get-togethers; any chance to spend time with her family was important to her. She especially loved when her grandchildren came to stay for the summer each year. She was adamant that we all attend swimming lessons just in case she ever ended up in a body of water bigger than a bathtub. She was preceded in death by two sons Randy Combs, Todd Combs.&nbsp; She will be sorely missed and survived by her sister Sherri O’Keefe, son Kim Combs and daughter Kristy Reincke, grandchildren: Casey Richardson, Kellie Stanley, Brooklyn Stephens, Dustin Combs, great grandchildren: Madison, Colton, Teagan, Jackson, Kobe, Laytin, Kole, Bella, and Emmie. Beverly Joan Combs

Linda Sue Wildeman, 60, of Hays, KS, passed away on August 9, 2020, at Hays Medical Center. She was born February 12, 1960, in Quinter, KS, to Ralph and Virginia (Katt) Wildeman. Linda graduated from Hoxie High School in 1979. After graduation she spent the remaining years of her life at DSNWK in Hays.&nbsp;

Linda was an avid bowler, showing her bowling prowess by winning National Singles in Special Olympics. She loved competing as a team as well playing in many Special Olympic Basketball Tournaments. When she wasn’t competing in Special Olympics Linda stayed active by walking on the treadmill and riding the exercise bike at the Hays Recreational Center.&nbsp; Hard work was very important to Linda, which she displayed by working as a dishwasher at Whiskey Creek.&nbsp; Linda was a member of the People First-Self Advocacy Group, ARC, and Central Plains CAPA-LINK.&nbsp;

Survivors include five brothers Kenny Wildeman (Rhonda) of Jennings, Alvin Wildeman (Patti) of Hoxie, Terry Wildeman (Sheila) of Lawrence, Randy Wildeman (Stephanie) of Garden City, Steve Wildeman (Kelly) of Topeka; four sisters, Shirley Medford (Bob) of Ammon, ID, Darlene Gassmann (Alan) of Gravette, AR, Norma Stewart (Randy) of Olathe, and Christy Rathgeber (Brian) of Grainfield.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her dad, Ralph Wildeman.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, August 13, 2020, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Grainfield. Due to the Gove County mandate of gatherings of no more than 75 people the service will be for immediate family and invite only.&nbsp;

Linda Sue Wildeman

Margaret Melvina "Toots" Magers, was born April 8, 1918, to parents, James Alfred "Sandy" and Maggie (Fuller) Powell, in the Lyle community of Decatur County, Kansas.  She passed away at the Good Samaritan Society in Oberlin, Kansas, on August 7, 2020, at the age of 102.

  Toots grew up in Grant Township of Decatur County and attended the Star country school.  She graduated from the Decatur County High School with the class of 1936.  On March 11, 1939, Toots married the love of her life, Carl Newton Magers in the Decatur County courthouse in Oberlin, Kansas.  They made their home in the Lyle community where Toots was a homemaker and together they raised two daughters.  She also taught in the country school for two years and did some substitute teaching when needed.  Toots' loving husband, Carl, passed away in November 1992, and she continued to live in their home in Lyle.  On December 28, 2017, Toots made the decision to move to her daughter, Jane's, home in Norton, Kansas, where she lived until recently moving to the Good Samaritan Society in Oberlin.

Toots attended the community church in Lyle and was a member of the United Methodist Women, Lady Quilters, Liberty Star Club and had served as a Star Valley 4-H leader for many years.  

Survivors include:  two daughters, Judy Guy-Easton, Quinter, Kansas; Jane Engelhardt, Norton; one sister-in-law, Delores Magers, of Colorado; four grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and 14 step-great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Toots was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Carl, two sons-in-law, Richard Engelhardt and Charles Easton, two brothers, James and Sam Powell, one sister, Irene Cozad, three sisters-in-law, Wilma and Dorothy Magers and Irene Powell, two nephews, Jimmie Powell and Jeff Magers and three brothers-in-law, Ralph, Dale and Rea Magers.

Mary was very active in her home and on the farm with her husband 
where they raised their four children. She was a member of the First 
Baptist Church in Ness City and active in Ladies Circle, VBS and Sunday 
School.&nbsp; She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.&nbsp; She was 
very active in the Ness County community attending Red Hat Society and 
as a 4-H leader.&nbsp; Mary served and received numerous awards as a Senior 
Companion, and she was a member of the Silver Haired Legislature.

On July 17, 1959 in Ransom, Kansas she married James Burdett.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on March 7, 2003.

Mary is survived by two sons, Everett Burdett of Salina and Dr. 
Michael Burdett and his wife, Lisa of Larned; two daughters, Debra 
Paxson of Garden City and Deidra Suchsland and her husband, Mike of 
Agra; one brother, Carl Brandt of LaCrosse; 10 grandchildren, Valerie 
(Manuel) Terrazas, Becky (Troy) Scott, Kathryn (Tyson) Couchman, Dr. 
Kristen Mull, Matt Paxson, Joe (Dani) Suchsland, James C. Burdett, Dr. 
Ben Suchsland, David Burdett, and Dr. Megan Suchsland and 11 great

Joyce M. Schaffer, 68, La Crosse, Kansas, died Saturday, August 8, 2020, at her home.

Joyce was born April 9, 1952, in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of 
Clarence and Ludwina (Begler) Schaffer.&nbsp; She was a resident of La 
Crosse, Kansas, since 2002, moving from Denver, Colorado.&nbsp; A 1970 
graduate of Holy Family High School, Denver, Colorado, she was a medical
 coordinator at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas, before her 
retirement.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas,
 where she was a member of St. Michael’s Altar Society/St. Michael’s 
Social Commission, a lector, a eucharistic minister, and a PSR teacher 
for 12 years.

Survivors include:&nbsp; one sister, Geraldine McGinn (Emmett), La Crosse,
 Kansas; one sister in law, Shirley Schaffer, Byers, Colorado; two 
nephews; three nieces; and her lifelong friend, Linda Calvillo, La 
Crosse, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Robert Schaffer; and one brother, Kenneth Schaffer.

A rosary will be led by the Ladies of the Prayer Group Thursday, August 13, 2020, at 9:30 A.M.

Village Care Center in Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on September 19,
 1930 in Rush County, Kansas the daughter of Frank and Helen (Dreher) 
Kreutzer.

Clara was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and Altar Society and 
the American Legion Auxiliary Post 152 all of Ness City, a life member 
of the Garden City VFW Auxiliary Post 7972 and a member of the Daughters
 of Isabella. She was a cook at St. Dominic's and the Ness City Leisure 
Years Center. On January 28, 1948 she married Marvin Dechant in Ness 
City, Kansas.

Survivors include husband, Marvin Dechant; four sons, Terry and 
Debbie Dechant of Olathe, Bill Dechant of Ransom, Don Dechant and Judy 
Smith of Cheney, Steve Dechant and Shelli of Wichita; four daughters, 
Pat Reimer of Ness City, Sue Baier and Ron of Willis, Texas, Sandy 
Borger and Loren of Meade, and Shelly Lumley and Jason Garrison of Ness 
City; one brother, Robert Kreutzer of Leoti. 24 grandchildren; 44

Clara Elizabeth Dechant

Barbara Lynn Dyatt was born September 5, 1938, and died peacefully on July 31, 2020, after a long illness.

Known as “Lynn”, she was a treasured sister, aunt, cousin, colleague,
 friend, and Irish music enthusiast. Lynn was born and raised on a wheat
 farm just outside of Goodland, Kansas. The daughter of Hugh M. Dyatt 
and Gladys “Tot” Ward Dyatt, she loved nothing better than working 
side-by-side with her dad in those golden wheat fields and playing with a
 succession of dogs that were inevitably by her side.

She attended grade school and high school in Goodland and received 
her B.A. and M.A. from Fort Hays State University. Following graduation,
 Lynn and her sister Donna began a commitment to teaching elementary 
children in Salina, Kansas. They then moved to Colorado Springs where 
each pursued other careers in business.&nbsp; They were each other’s best 
friends and loyal companions until Donna’s death. Even after her 
retirement Lynn was deeply involved in adult education and numerous 
civic activities in Colorado Springs.

For many years Lynn was an enthusiastic member of the Crystal Park 
community where she relished the quiet, the views, and the wildlife of 
her home at the top of the mountain. In the last few years of her life, 
Lynn lived in the Kissing Camels Community in Colorado Springs and 
became an active friend and neighbor with a quick wit and zest for 
anything fun. Lynn was an accomplished photographer whose photographs 
leave a lasting legacy of her love for the world around her and her 
family and friends. She especially enjoyed playing her tin whistle which
 she mastered very late in life and which led her to Ireland several 
times and to participate with several Irish music groups and 
enthusiasts.

Lynn was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Joyce Yeaton and Donna Dyatt.

She is survived by nephews, cousins, and a host of friends who 
treasured her friendship and her unending curiosity and good humor. Lynn
 and Donna were “adopted” members of the Reed family in Colorado Springs
 who were especially loving to Lynn during the last years. Lynn’s family
 is particularly grateful to the Reed family and Lynn’s many friends who
 were with her through her illness and in her final days.&nbsp;

 </figure>Barbara Lynn Dyatt was born September 5, 1938, and died peacefully on July 31, 2020, after a long illness.Known as “Lynn”, she was a treasured sister, aunt, cousin, colleague,
 friend, and Irish music enthusiast. Lynn was born and raised on a wheat
 farm just outside of Goodland, Kansas. The daughter of Hugh M. Dyatt 
and Gladys “Tot” Ward Dyatt, she loved nothing better than working 
side-by-side with her dad in those golden wheat fields and playing with a
 succession of dogs that were inevitably by her side.She attended grade school and high school in Goodland and received 
her B.A. and M.A. from Fort Hays State University. Following graduation,
 Lynn and her sister Donna began a commitment to teaching elementary 
children in Salina, Kansas. They then moved to Colorado Springs where 
each pursued other careers in business.&nbsp; They were each other’s best 
friends and loyal companions until Donna’s death. Even after her 
retirement Lynn was deeply involved in adult education and numerous 
civic activities in Colorado Springs.For many years Lynn was an enthusiastic member of the Crystal Park 
community where she relished the quiet, the views, and the wildlife of 
her home at the top of the mountain. In the last few years of her life, 
Lynn lived in the Kissing Camels Community in Colorado Springs and 
became an active friend and neighbor with a quick wit and zest for 
anything fun. Lynn was an accomplished photographer whose photographs 
leave a lasting legacy of her love for the world around her and her 
family and friends. She especially enjoyed playing her tin whistle which
 she mastered very late in life and which led her to Ireland several 
times and to participate with several Irish music groups and 
enthusiasts.Lynn was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Joyce Yeaton and Donna Dyatt.She is survived by nephews, cousins, and a host of friends who 
treasured her friendship and her unending curiosity and good humor. Lynn
 and Donna were “adopted” members of the Reed family in Colorado Springs
 who were especially loving to Lynn during the last years. Lynn’s family
 is particularly grateful to the Reed family and Lynn’s many friends who

Barbara Lynn Dyatt

Ray Louis Eilts, 96, Hays, died Wednesday, April 8, 2020, at Via Christi Village in Hays.

He was born August 13, 1923, in rural 
Rush County south of Rush Center, Kansas, the son of Ed and Anna 
(Richter) Eilts.&nbsp; He was a baptized member of Hope Lutheran Church in 
Rush Center and a graduate of La Crosse High School in the class of 1942.
 He attended Emporia State University then served in the United States 
Army Air Corps.&nbsp; He was in the 1503rd Air Force Base Unit and crew chief
 of C54.&nbsp; 

On October 1, 1966, he was united in marriage to Dolores Anne 
Lazuire in Plainville, and they celebrated nearly 50 years of marriage 
before she preceded him in death on June 1, 2016.&nbsp; He was a farmer, 
custom harvester, professional driver transporting livestock, bulk fuel,
 and manufactured housing, and a school bus driver for USD 489.&nbsp; He was a
 member of the LaCrosse American Legion Post #33, Hays American Legion 
Post #173, charter member of the American Legion Post #173 Patriot 
Guard, the Barbershop Harmony Society, blood bank donor, Rush Center Boy
 Scout Troop #447 leader, Gold Wing Touring Association, Plainville 
Lions Club, and the Walnut City Free Mason Lodge #215.&nbsp; His hobbies 
included motorcycle riding, airplane flying, dancing, and singing in the
 High Plains Barbershop Chorus.&nbsp; He was a Kansas City Chiefs fan, and 
enjoyed his pet dog, listening to band music, and meeting new people.&nbsp;

Doris Darlene Keller, 90, of Russell, Kansas, died on Wednesday, August 05, 2020, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Doris was born on January 11, 1930, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of John George and Ollive Grace (Francis) Ehrlich.  She grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1947.  She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Edward Leroy Keller on July 20, 1947, in Bunker Hill, Kansas.  From this union they were blessed with 2 children Danny and Laura.  She worked as a production clerk for Graham-Michaelis &amp; Sierra Petroleum for 20 years but her fulltime job was being a wife, mother and homemaker for her husband and children.  She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church and Church Guild in Russell, Kansas.  She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, embroidering, baking and frying chicken.  Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Surviving family include her son Danny Allen Keller (Roxanne) of Colby, Kansas; and daughter Laura Elaine Seirer (Dennis) of Russell, Kansas; sister Judith V. McLennon of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Brandon Dale Seirer, Casey Edward Seirer and Bria Russo; great grandchildren Jaelynne Marie and Coen Alexander.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edward on November 23, 2013, and sisters Francis J. Staab and Georgia Lee Ehrlich, and brother Richard Dale Ehrlich.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.  A Private family graveside service will be held later. Carolyn L. Janzen, age 89 passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.  She was born on November 3, 1930, in Dodge City, Kansas, the daughter of Taylor Ardis and Helen M. Helfrick Shriver.  A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1949 moving from Berkeley, California, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and El Quartelejo Study Club all of Scott City, Kansas. Carolyn enjoyed her grandchildren, gardening, and sewing.

On December 29, 1949, she married Keith A. Janzen in Hobbs, New Mexico.  He passed away on October 22, 2007, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors Include Two Daughters - Elissa C. Bahm of Scott City, Kansas, Ann K. Price of Branson West, Missouri, One Son - Terry A. Janzen of Minnesota, Seven Grandchildren and Ten Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Husband, One Brother - Keith Shriver, One Sister - Janet Lewis, and One Great Grandson - Ethan Price.

Graveside services were held on Friday, August 7, 2020, at the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas with Don Williams presiding.

Carolyn L. Janzen

Freda Mae Weyand, was born February 12, 1937, on the family homestead in Menlo, Kansas, and passed away at the Salina Regional Health Care Center in Salina, Kansas, on August 5, 2020, at the age of 83.  Freda was the 10th of 12 children born to her parents, Ray and Eva (Moos) Duffey.

Freda grew up on the family homestead in the Menlo community where she graduated from the Menlo High School.  She went on to attend the Stormont-Vail Nursing School in Topeka, Kansas, graduating with the class of 1958.  On September 20, 1958, she married her life-long sweetheart, Gerald Weyand, in Seattle, Washington, where Gerald was stationed in the U.S. Navy.  Following his military discharge, they made their home in Pueblo, Colorado, and Lehigh, Kansas.  Gerald joined the Kansas Highway Patrol and served in Valley Center, Kansas, for one year and was then transferred to Norton in 1963.  Freda worked as a surgical nurse in the Norton County Hospital and worked for a year at the Norton State Hospital.  She returned to the Norton County Hospital and later at the Doctor's Clinic where she worked until her retirement in 1999.

Freda was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Norton and the Heritage Quilt Club.  She and Gerald also enjoyed trips to the casino following her retirement.  Freda had a great love for people and worried about her patients upon her retirement.  Her greatest joy in life was her family, raising her children and enjoying precious time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include:  her husband, Gerald Weyand, of their home in Norton; one daughter, Carla (Richard) Miller, Russell, Kansas; two sons, Curt (Michelle) Weyand, Manhattan, Kansas; Craig (Misty) Weyand, Salina, Kansas; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren with one more on the way; one brother, Cleo Duffey, Colby, Kansas; four sisters, Nina Brandt, Brownsburg, Indiana; Bernita (Mike) Gawith, Oberlin, Kansas; Leoma Steiger, Oakley, Kansas; Loreda (Robert) Wagner, LaCrosse, Kansas;  many nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Hoisington, KS to Harold and Alice (Crawford) Stevenson. On July 25, 
1957 she was united in marriage to Frank Marcum in Alva, OK. They were 
blessed with 3 children: Terry, Susan, and Patricia.
 Gladys worked as a store clerk at Mr. K’s Food Town in Plainville 
until her retirement. She was a member of the Women’s American Legion, 
VFW Auxiliary, the Drama Club, and the Plainville-Stockton Quilt Guild.
 Left to cherish her memory is her son, Terry Marcum and wife Phyllis
 of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Susan Thornton and husband Bill of 
Lorraine, KS; brothers, Ed, Pat, Larry, and Jim Stevenson; sisters,

 Left to cherish her memory is her son, Terry Marcum and wife Phyllis
 of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Susan Thornton and husband Bill of 
Lorraine, KS; brothers, Ed, Pat, Larry, and Jim Stevenson; sisters, 
Lorna Preciado and Judy Schuh; grandchildren, Brad and Dustin Higdon, 
who were raised by Frank and Gladys, Shaun and Brett Thornton, Sandra 
Jean; 12 great-grandchildren; and 
 2 great-great grandchildren.
 Gladys is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Alice; 
husband, Frank Marcum; daughter, Patricia Swanson; brothers, Richard, 
Harold, and Mike Stevenson; and sister, Barbara Harless.

Gladys Marcum

Jeanne Winter died on August 6, 2020. She was 92. The daughter of 
George and Agnes (Brull) Gatschet she grew up in Hays, Ks along with her
 four surviving brothers, Tom, Paul, Francis and George. In 1948, she 
married Charles Winter and moved to Garden City, Ks. Together she and 
Charles raised their four children in the family home they built 
together on Davis Street. There, they often shared their home with “the
 old aunts” for Sunday meals, holidays and family celebrations. As a 
housewife and mother in the 1950s and 1960s she cared for her children, 
baked, sewed, kept a great house and taught her children their chores. 
Jeanne valued learning and encouraged and supported her children’s 
educational pursuits. For herself, she pursued her interests in 
silversmithing, woodworking, needlepoint, stained glass and other 
projects. She developed her own business as a china painter and 
instructor and traveled the country with Charles, sharing her expertise.
 Every pursuit resulted in gifts she created for her children, their 
families, neighbors and friends. 
Jeanne’s most enduring, lifelong relationship was with God. She was a 
devout Catholic and “charter” parishioner of St. Dominic Church and 
School. She was instrumental in the development of Perpetual Adoration 
at Saint Catherine’s Hospital and worked tirelessly for many years to 
foster its success. She prayed daily to be welcomed in heaven. 
She is survived by her children Mary (Jim), Chuck (Mary Ellen), TK and 
Michel (Emmett), her “Grands”, Lauren, Logan, Shannon, Dianne, Steven, 
Shane and Zach and seven great grandchildren. She joins her parents, 
Charles, son-in-law Greg, sisters-in-law Amy and Ethel, many friends and
 family in heaven. 
A Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2020 at St. 
Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City, Kansas with Mass of Christian 
Burial following at 10:00 a.m. (with social distancing). A private 
burial is planned. In lieu of flowers, Jeanne requested memorials be

Jeanne Winter

Gary Levi Olson

Thomas Wesley Edgett, son of Louis and Ila Mae (Manners) Edgett, was 
born August 20, 1951 in Norton, Kansas and passed away at the Hays 
Medical Center in Hays, Kansas August 3, 2020, at the age of 68.
 Tom's early years were spent on the farm near Edmond, later moving 
to Colorado Springs, Colorado. In January 1964, the family moved to Hill
 City where Tom graduated from high school in 1969. Tom went to Colby 
Community College and Fort Hays State University where he obtained his 
teaching degree in the math and science fields. Tom student taught in 
Norton before taking a position in Eureka, Kansas for a year. Then he 
returned to Hill City High School where he taught for 29 years until his
 retirement August 31, 2005. During his teaching years he coached Hill 
City girls’ basketball taking the girls to state several times.
 Tom loved everything outdoors. He enjoyed cutting horses and bronc 
riding and even has a couple of trophies to prove he was pretty good at 
it. Hunting and fishing were common activities for him, and he never 
lacked for family or friends just waiting for that call to go. Tom's 
friends were very important to him and could always count on him to lend
 a helping hand. In the past few years, the support of his friends in 
his own times of need was greatly appreciated.
 Tom married Jill Diane Waddle December 30, 1986 in Norton. With this
 marriage, Tom became an instant dad to Shane and Ryan, a role he did 
not take lightly. He also welcomed son Kyle in 1990. His married life 
was filled with teaching, coaching, school activities, goats, calves, 
cattle, chickens and birds, emus, a few horses, a mule, and lots of bird
 and coon dogs. With retirement he enjoyed his elk herd and his lap 
dogs, Duke and Monster. Diane figured out very soon in their marriage 
that if she did not learn to hunt and fish, she was going to be sitting 
at home alone. Family was very important to Tom. He was so proud of his
 sons. As the grandkids came along, it was very important for him to be 
part of their lives, watching them grow and teaching them to shoot! 
 Tom was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Ila Mae Edgett; 
one brother Bob Edgett; and his paternal and maternal grandparents. 
Survivors include his wife Jill Diane; his three sons: Kyle Edgett, 
Lenora; Shane Woodard and Karin, Addisyn and Aidric of Forney, Texas; 
Ryan Woodard and Leann, Isabelle, Gideon and Sydney of Wichita; his two 
sisters Rhonda Cooper, Topeka and Beverely Parks, Kansas City, Missouri;
 nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and many cousins.

Thomas Wesley Edgett

Richard Joseph Griffin, 74, of Atwood, died Monday, August 3, 2020. 


Richard was born to Paul E and Viola (Coyne) Griffin on April 15, 1946 
in Marysville KS. At the tender age of 4, Rich and his brother Paul Jr. 
were reluctantly admitted to Winfield State Hospital by their father 
after their mother passed suddenly. For 26 years, he lived in different 
institutions. He joined our family at PDC in 1977. In 1994, Rich moved 
into a house with his good friend Donald Gilbert. A few years later 
Don’s sister Susan and her husband Loren purchased a trailer home for 
them. Susan continued to love and care for Rich after Don’s passing. 
Rich loved Susan and appreciated her loving care. 
How do we remember Rich? Many years ago, he said I could use the word 
“ornery”. He was that and our teaser. He loved to have fun. Rich enjoyed
 coffee, hot cakes, cinnamon rolls, banana cake and coke. He liked 
watching Westerns and wanted popcorn anytime he watched a movie. (Of 
course, half the popcorn landed on the floor!) He loved Special Olympics
 Basketball, bowling, softball, shooting pool, going to camp and of 
course Christmas. Rich was a very big fan of RCHS football and 
basketball games. Some of his favorites were going fishing, dogs and 
holding babies. 
Rich attended the Christian Church and was dear friends with Jim Begley.
 Mr. Begley took such special care of Rich and he loved him dearly. Last
 month our hearts were touched by Rich’s tenderness for Kelly. He had a 
bouquet of flowers for her and he kept teasing her with them. Finally, 
he gave them to her and said “Love you” 
From all of your PDC family we were blessed to have you in our lives. We will miss you and love you!! 
A memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 14, 2020
 at the Prairie Development Center, Atwood. Following the service, at 
2:00 p.m. Rich will be inurned next to his good friend, Donnie in the

Richard Joseph Griffin

Bernice Louise Moore, age 91, died on August 4, 2020 at Cedar Village
 Long Term Care, Ness City.&nbsp; She was born on August 15, 1928 in Bazine, 
Kansas the daughter of Ed and Clara (Michel) Witthuhn.

Bernice was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid and
 the Golden Years Club all of Bazine.&nbsp; She was a graduate of the Bazine 
High School and thoroughly enjoyed raising her family and attending her 
grandchildren's' sports and school activities.

On January 28, 1948 she married Dean Moore in Bazine, Kansas.&nbsp; He 
preceded her in death on December 10, 1998 after 49 years of marriage.

She is survived by her daughter, Denise Corsair and her husband, 
Scott of Bazine; three grandsons, Chris and Nicole Corsair of Hays and 
their children, Hank, Gus, Morgan, and Maddy; Brett and Sara Corsair of 
Bazine and their children, Emmitt, Owen, and Scarlett; Shane and Allison
 Corsair of Bazine and their daughter, RaeLee.&nbsp; Bernice was preceded in 
death by her husband, parents, and her sister, Claretta Pfannenstiel and
 her husband, Ralph.

Funeral services will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City 
on Friday, August 7, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial in the Bazine
 Cemetery.&nbsp; Viewing will be at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Thursday from 
Noon until 9:00 p.m. with the family present from 5-7 p.m.

Memorial Contributions may be given to the Bazine Golden Years Club or the Bazine Cemetery Fund.

Bernice Louise Moore

Charles "Charlie" Munsch was born April 10, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, to Carl and Emma (Reichert) Munsch, Antonio, KS.&nbsp; He was the 11th of 12 children. He passed away peacefully at his home in Russell KS on August 4, 2020.&nbsp;

Charlie grew up on the Munsch family farm located one mile north of Antonino until 1956 when the family moved to Hays, KS.&nbsp; He attended Antonino Grade School until the sixth grade.&nbsp; In Hays, he finished his elementary school days at Jefferson West.&nbsp; His high school years were spent at St Joseph Military Academy (now TMP-Marion High School) graduating in 1963.&nbsp; In 1965, he was drafted into the U. S. Army and served a two-year term with one year in Viet Nam. He was a proud Vietnam veteran.&nbsp;

In 1967, he moved to Kansas City, KS where he was employed as an auto mechanic for 12 years at Bud Brown Chrysler-Plymouth, Overland Park, KS. &nbsp;

In 1968, he married Norma Jean (Jeanie) Brock at Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Cawker City, KS. The couple made their home in Kansas City Kansas for 4 years.&nbsp; In 1972, they moved to Louisburg, KS where they built their own home North and East of Louisburg.&nbsp; Two children were joyfully adopted into the family, Brian Patrick in 1975 and Rebecca Ann in 1977.&nbsp; They remained in Louisburg until 1979 when they moved to Cawker City, Ks.&nbsp; There they bought a Chrysler and Massey Ferguson dealership, which they owned for 3 years.&nbsp;

When the dealership closed, Charlie was employed by Waconda Motors Chevrolet dealership as a mechanic for two years. He then began employment with Wise Construction Inc. until 2001 when he moved to Hays. In 2001, he was employed by Commercial Builders for two years and one year by Glassman, Inc.&nbsp; In 2004, he became head of maintenance at TMP-Marion high school where he worked until retirement his in 2012.&nbsp; In 2013, he became a resident of Russell, KS.&nbsp; From 2014 to 2016 he was a bus driver for USD 207, Russell. He also for a short time was maintenance man for St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Russell. &nbsp;

Charles’ survivors include his wife of the home, son Brian and wife Maranda of Guthrie OK; daughter Rebecca Haberman and husband Brian of Hutchinson, KS; grandchildren Blake Odle of Hays, KS, Jacob Hayden of Topeka, KS,&nbsp; Isaac Hayden of Lawrence, KS, and Aubrey Hayden of Hutchinson, Ks.&nbsp; Great grandsons Jeffrey Spencer of Simpson, KS and Isaiah Haberman of Hutchinson; sister Rosalita Flax of Ness City KS and many nieces and nephews. Proceeding Charlie in death were his parents; brothers Severin, Eddie, Victor, Leonard, Francis and James, sisters Helen Jarmon, Alice Dechant, Delores Diemert and Eileen Hoff.&nbsp;

Charlie was very talented and his mother-in-law once proclaimed, “He can fix anything”.&nbsp; In his teen years, he worked alongside his father in house building and carpentry in Hays.&nbsp; He never lost his talent for woodworking and building, which was evident with the home he and Jeanie built in 1972 in Louisburg and then a cabinet shop while living there.&nbsp; In Cawker City, he and wife Jeanie completely remodeled their home.&nbsp; He also built grandfather clocks, toys for grandchildren and in last several years began repairing clocks as a hobby. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Over the last few years he and Jeanie enjoyed trips in their RV as well as spending time at area lakes for days at a time.&nbsp;

While in Cawker City, Charlie was a baseball coach for little league and K-18 ball teams as well umpire for city leagues.&nbsp; He also served on Cawker City Council from 1994 to 1999. In 1999, he was appointed&nbsp; as mayor and served in that capacity until resigning in 2001 when he moved to Hays.&nbsp; 

He is a member of the St Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Russell; St. Nicholas of Myra Knights of Columbus, Hays and The American Legion. He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Parish, Hays, SS Peter and Paul Parish, Cawker City, KS and Knights of Columbus Council 1868, Cawker City and served as Grand Knight 1984-1986 and again 1988-1989 and as Financial Secretary 1996-2001.&nbsp; He also served as a volunteer fireman in Cawker City from 1981 to 2000.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, August 10, 2020 at St. Mary’s Queen of Angels Catholic Church.&nbsp; Cremation will follow the services and a private burial of Ashes will follow at a later date.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Sunday, August 9, 2020 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church with the Vigil being held at 6:30 PM, Sunday at the church. 

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to St. Mary Queen of Angels Maintenance Fund or education fund for great grandchildren. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

 </figure>Charles "Charlie" Munsch was born April 10, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, to Carl and Emma (Reichert) Munsch, Antonio, KS.&nbsp; He was the 11th of 12 children. He passed away peacefully at his home in Russell KS on August 4, 2020.&nbsp;Charlie grew up on the Munsch family farm located one mile north of Antonino until 1956 when the family moved to Hays, KS.&nbsp; He attended Antonino Grade School until the sixth grade.&nbsp; In Hays, he finished his elementary school days at Jefferson West.&nbsp; His high school years were spent at St Joseph Military Academy (now TMP-Marion High School) graduating in 1963.&nbsp; In 1965, he was drafted into the U. S. Army and served a two-year term with one year in Viet Nam. He was a proud Vietnam veteran.&nbsp;In 1967, he moved to Kansas City, KS where he was employed as an auto mechanic for 12 years at Bud Brown Chrysler-Plymouth, Overland Park, KS. &nbsp;In 1968, he married Norma Jean (Jeanie) Brock at Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Cawker City, KS. The couple made their home in Kansas City Kansas for 4 years.&nbsp; In 1972, they moved to Louisburg, KS where they built their own home North and East of Louisburg.&nbsp; Two children were joyfully adopted into the family, Brian Patrick in 1975 and Rebecca Ann in 1977.&nbsp; They remained in Louisburg until 1979 when they moved to Cawker City, Ks.&nbsp; There they bought a Chrysler and Massey Ferguson dealership, which they owned for 3 years.&nbsp;When the dealership closed, Charlie was employed by Waconda Motors Chevrolet dealership as a mechanic for two years. He then began employment with Wise Construction Inc. until 2001 when he moved to Hays. In 2001, he was employed by Commercial Builders for two years and one year by Glassman, Inc.&nbsp; In 2004, he became head of maintenance at TMP-Marion high school where he worked until retirement his in 2012.&nbsp; In 2013, he became a resident of Russell, KS.&nbsp; From 2014 to 2016 he was a bus driver for USD 207, Russell. He also for a short time was maintenance man for St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Russell. &nbsp;Charles’ survivors include his wife of the home, son Brian and wife Maranda of Guthrie OK; daughter Rebecca Haberman and husband Brian of Hutchinson, KS; grandchildren Blake Odle of Hays, KS, Jacob Hayden of Topeka, KS,&nbsp; Isaac Hayden of Lawrence, KS, and Aubrey Hayden of Hutchinson, Ks.&nbsp; Great grandsons Jeffrey Spencer of Simpson, KS and Isaiah Haberman of Hutchinson; sister Rosalita Flax of Ness City KS and many nieces and nephews. Proceeding Charlie in death were his parents; brothers Severin, Eddie, Victor, Leonard, Francis and James, sisters Helen Jarmon, Alice Dechant, Delores Diemert and Eileen Hoff.&nbsp;Charlie was very talented and his mother-in-law once proclaimed, “He can fix anything”.&nbsp; In his teen years, he worked alongside his father in house building and carpentry in Hays.&nbsp; He never lost his talent for woodworking and building, which was evident with the home he and Jeanie built in 1972 in Louisburg and then a cabinet shop while living there.&nbsp; In Cawker City, he and wife Jeanie completely remodeled their home.&nbsp; He also built grandfather clocks, toys for grandchildren and in last several years began repairing clocks as a hobby. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Over the last few years he and Jeanie enjoyed trips in their RV as well as spending time at area lakes for days at a time.&nbsp;While in Cawker City, Charlie was a baseball coach for little league and K-18 ball teams as well umpire for city leagues.&nbsp; He also served on Cawker City Council from 1994 to 1999. In 1999, he was appointed&nbsp; as mayor and served in that capacity until resigning in 2001 when he moved to Hays.&nbsp; He is a member of the St Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Russell; St. Nicholas of Myra Knights of Columbus, Hays and The American Legion. Charles 'Charlie' Munsch

Gerald J. Schneweis, 82, affectionately know as Jack, of rural Claflin, Kansas passed away on Sunday evening, August 2, 2020,&nbsp; at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; 

Jack
 was born on October 15, 1937, at Great Bend, Kansas, to John and Margaret
 (Boor) Schneweis.&nbsp; He graduated from Odin High School in 1955 and was 
united in marriage to Sandra E. Titsworth on May 4, 1963, at Great Bend.&nbsp;
 Jack served in the Kansas National Guard between 1959-1965.&nbsp; He was a 
member of Holy Family Parish at Odin, Kansas.

A lifelong resident of Barton County, Kansas, Jack was a 
carpenter, farmer and stockman, only recently retiring.&nbsp; Using his 
extraordinary carpentry skills, he helped many local families, churches 
and businesses improve and beautify their surroundings.

Jack was an Odin Chairholder.&nbsp; He enjoyed spending time 
with neighbors and friends watching Chiefs football.&nbsp; He often felt the 
need to call the Governor and dispute the drawn Keno numbers.

Jack is survived by his wife, Sandra E. Schneweis of the 
home; one daughter Melanie (and her husband Curtis) Arbuckle of Hays, 
Kansas; two sons: Brian (and his wife Lorevil) Schneweis of Great Bend, 
Kansas and Jason (and his wife, Debbie) Schneweis of Omaha, Nebraska; 
two grandchildren:&nbsp; Jackson and Victoria Schneweis; three sisters:&nbsp; 
Dorothy Maneth, Mary Stewart, and Bernice Huslig all of Great Bend, 
Kansas and two brothers:&nbsp; Francis Scheweis of Guymon, Oklahoma and 
Herman “Butch” Schneweis of Hoisington, Kansas; numerous nieces and 
nephews.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Leo 
Schneweis and three sisters:&nbsp; Margaret Hitschmann, Rita Klug, and Judy 
Nimmo.

With the current pandemic, the family has chosen a 
private viewing.&nbsp; Graveside Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday,
 August 7, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery north of Beaver, Kansas 
where appropriate social distancing is encouraged,&nbsp; Fr. Terrance Klein 
officiating.&nbsp; A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life will be scheduled 
at a later date.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the 
Beaver Volunteer Fire Department or the Claflin Ambulance Service.
