Darrell Dean McGinnis died suddenly at Via Christi, Hays, Kansas with his wife by his side on August 24th&nbsp;2020. He was born on the 23rd&nbsp;of September 1932, in the «&nbsp;Regan&nbsp;» house rental just West of Esbon, Kansas in Jewell County, to Ivan and Frances LORENCE.&nbsp; He was born just after Don and before Connie and Larry.&nbsp;

His parents bought a farm, with the help of Frances’ father. Darrell, in his memoir, speaks fondly of this time, going to country school and playing in the near-by creek. This innocent time came to an end in 1939 with the death of his younger brother Larry (age 2 years and four months) from stomach flu and the loss of the farm after the terrible droughts of the 30's.&nbsp; In 1941 his father moved the family to Missouri.&nbsp; They first rented a farm near Osborne and later bought 133 acres in the Keystone community near St. Joe.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The family moved back to Jewell County in 1947 to a farm south of Esbon.&nbsp; Darrell went to high school there and graduated in 1950.&nbsp; His father died in 1950. Having never liked farm life, and having always enjoyed school more, Darrell took the opportunity to join the Navy to get out and served in San Diego from 1952 to 1956.

He then went to the then “Fort Hays College’ and met Joel Moss, his great mentor, who was in the art department and convinced him to study art there. He graduated in 1960 with a degree in Fine Arts in ceramics.&nbsp;

It is at the art department where he met fellow student Grace Staab and they were married on August 20th1960 at Saint Joseph's Church in Hays.&nbsp; They celebrated 60 years of marriage just four days before his passing.&nbsp;

Their first child, Erin, was born in 1961, and then Martin in 1962 before they moved to Maryville, Missouri, where he got his first teaching job.&nbsp; Collin was born there in 1963.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tragedy struck in 1964 when Marty died of complications of a strep infection and Darrell moved his family back to Hays in 1964 when offered a teaching position at his alma mater.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Two more children followed&nbsp;: Sean in 1965 and Patrick in 1968.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Darrell spent the next 30 years teaching ceramics at Fort Hays State University, before retiring in 1994.&nbsp; He had a special talent as a teacher and many of his students thought of him as an admired mentor and an important influence on them.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He created sculptures in an abstract expressionist style, using combinations of simple forms and natural textures, where the clayness of the object was always evident.&nbsp; He showed his work in many exhibits throughout the Midwest and Rockies.

Always the defender of the arts he was one of the founders of the first city arts councils in the country and worked tirelessly while dragging his children along to develop the Hays Arts Council.&nbsp; This included the council's decision to buy the old Hays Daily News building on East 11th&nbsp;Street and convert it into an arts center. In order to raise money he was heavily involved in the fundraisers of haunted houses that were created in the building before it was transformed into the gallery and shops it is now known for.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He had a knack for conversation and was always lagging behind somewhere talking to someone.&nbsp; He could and did strike up a conversation with anyone and was always interested in people.&nbsp; He genuinely liked everyone he met. But he could also take up the battle and fight for the causes he believed in against those that did not share his vision.

He will be remembered by his family for the yearly August vacations taken in a cabin in Green Mountain Falls, Colorado.&nbsp; The cabin was rented from his friends the Gwynns starting in 1968 by trading them sculptures for a week's stay in the mountains.&nbsp; With John Denver records, squeal games, puzzles, bologna gravy and grilled steaks, the yearly time together brought the family close and gave them many wonderful memories.&nbsp; Darrell and Grace bought the cabin in 1986 and the family still goes there every summer, fifty odd years later.

He had many lifelong friends and stayed in contact with him.&nbsp; He was particularly close to his sister Connie, throughout their lives.&nbsp; He had weekly breakfast with the retired art faculty, including Kathleen Kuchar, Mick Jilg, Joyce and Cal Mahon, John Thorns, and Jim and Sue Hinkhouse among others.

He is survived by his wife, Grace of Hays, his daughter Erin Hughes and her husband David, of Hays, his son Collin and his wife Maria of Maize, Kansas, his son Sean and his husband Stéphane Lescoules of Paris, France and his son Patrick and his wife Penny, of Hays.&nbsp; He was much loved by his grandchildren, Martin, Megan, Jeremy, Jessica, Hannah, Anthony, Shelby, Sydney, Emily, Josh, Aubrey, and Andrew and by his great-grandchildren&nbsp;: John, Ada, Ally, Evelyn, Lincoln, and Liam.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Frances, his brothers, Don and Larry and a son Martin.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 AM Friday, September 4, 2020 at St. Joseph's&nbsp;Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's&nbsp;Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5&nbsp;PM – 8 PM with a combined rosary and parish vigil service at 7 PM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 215 West 13th Street Hays, Kansas 67601.

Phillipsburg resident Dorothy M. Schneider passed away August 30, 2020, at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 94.&nbsp; She was born September 17, 1925, in Norton County, KS.

Survivors include her sons: Lynn of Washington, KS, Wayne of Salina &amp; Bruce of Wichita; her daughter, Val Oestreich of Melissa, TX; 2 sisters, Edna Riemann of Phillipsburg &amp; Mary Billups of Hill City; 8 grandchildren &amp; 10 great grandchildren.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Sept. 3, at 2:00 p.m. in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg, with Father George Chalbhagam officiating.&nbsp;

Joseph “Joe” Karlton Swaney passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2020 at 
the Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 57. He 
was born on August 23, 1963 to James and Shirley (Ward) Swaney in 
Phillipsburg, Kansas. In September of 1990, he married Kayla (Doty) 
Swaney and together they had four children, Dalton, Sheyenne, Shevelle, 
and Janay. They later divorced.
 Joe grew up around the Rooks County area where he attended Glade 
Grade School and then Stockton High School. He held several jobs as a 
general laborer but for the past 10 years he worked for Michaels 
Corporation out of Topeka as an equipment operator. He loved his job and
 the traveling involved. If he wasn’t working he was fishing, hunting, 
trapping, riding 4-wheelers, farming or working with cattle. Joe was 
known for his fun-loving nature, sarcasm, and always thirsty for a cold 
Coors Light. The times of paintball wars and hunting for lures around 
the lake with his kids are some that will forever be cherished. Although
 tough as nails, and stubborn to a fault, he was taken too soon and the 
memories we have of him are what will last a lifetime.
 He is preceded in death by his father, James Swaney; infant daughter, Sheyenne Swaney; and sister, Karla Blunt.
 Joe is survived by his ex-wife, Kayla Swaney of Stockton; mother,

Joseph 'Joe' Karlton Swaney

Gloria Charlyne Randall, “Granny,” so lovingly known by the younger generations of her family, smiled her last smile on August 30, 2020, at the Brown County Hospital in Ainsworth, Nebraska. Her final days were spent with her family laughing, shedding tears, and sharing special memories as her extraordinary life was celebrated. And it was extraordinary. Her joyful, seize-the-day attitude was unmatched and unwavering. She had a gift for making those around her feel like they were the most special people in the world.

Gloria was born in Elkhart, Kansas, on October 1, 1934, to Gertrude and Shelby Gamble during the Dust Bowl. Her mother used to tell the story of draping damp sheets over Gloria’s bassinet to keep out the relentless dust.  Gloria’s brother, Gary, was born four years later and it was the beginning of a unique and cherished brother-sister bond.  Gloria attended high school in Ashland, Kansas, where she first knew Philip “Phip” Randall. She went on to study at Washburn University. She was on the dive and synchronized swim team and loved “twirling in the water.”  Gloria didn’t pay much attention to Phip. She laughed and said, “He was just too wild for me!” But one day she DID pay attention to him and everything changed.  They were married in Ashland on August 29, 1954.  

Gloria and Phip lived in married housing on the campus of Kansas State University while he attended vet school. Gloria’s life was anything but dull thanks to Phip’s never-ending pranks.  Their sons, Philip David “Dave” and Jeffrey Scott “Jeff,” were born while Phip was still in school. Upon graduation, they moved to La Crosse, then to Dodge City, and finally were home in Scott City, Kansas, where Wendy Sue and Kristi Kay, their daughters, were both born.  Phip and his partner established Spencer-Randall Veterinary Clinic. Later, Phip and two friends built HRC Feed Yards. Gloria was a full-time wife and mother and loved every minute. They enjoyed their family trips, their friends and were very involved with the First Methodist Church. They developed an exceptionally dear group of friends, “the gang.” Those friendships have endured through the best and worst of times.  

Gloria’s children reminisce fondly about the many camping and boating trips they took to the lake while growing up. Gloria said it became a ritual for Phip to pick her up, fling her over his shoulder and toss her into the lake the minute they set up camp.  Phip earned his small plane pilot’s license and flew his family back and forth to his childhood ranch home in the red dirt canyons of Ashland. The kids and their cousins played hard in the canyons. The tradition of Thanksgiving at the ranch was born. Even today, that area of Kansas is sacred to the family.  K-State remained dear to Gloria and Phip in a big way. It was a sure bet that on game days during football season they’d be decked out in head-to-toe purple cheering on their Wildcats at the stadium. Gloria and her family have never stopped going to the games and when she couldn’t be in the stadium, she was on her couch watching and providing enthusiastic commentary.  

Phip died unexpectedly in 1977 while both boys were in college and both girls were still living at home. Gloria powered on, moved to Garden City, Kansas, and earned her real estate license and travel agent certification. Later she moved to Denver and worked for many years for the Colorado Hospital Association. It was there that she took up ballroom dancing and revived her twirl, but this time on the dance floor instead of in the water.  

Boating on the lake continued to be a family tradition. Gloria loved to ride in the bow of the boat, with the breeze in her hair and wearing her legendary smile. She was still waterskiing at age 70, a family record that may stand forever.   Gloria’s first grandbaby was born in 1979, then came 10 more in quick succession. Gloria was always there to help and always had babies in her arms. Her best advice to the new mothers in the family was, “Don’t worry about all of the rules they tell you at the hospital - you just love that baby - it’s as simple as that.”  

In time Gloria left Denver and moved back to Ashland. She worked as a paraprofessional for the Ashland School District for several years. She re-established the family tradition of Thanksgiving at the ranch in the southern Kansas red dirt canyons. Her grandchildren speak reverently of those Thanksgivings.  Upon retirement, she moved to Manhattan, Kansas, with her daughter, Wendy. It became a hub of activity throughout the year that peaked during the football season.  Ainsworth, Nebraska, was her most recent adventure. She loved the little town and it loved her right back. In the mornings you would find her on the patio drinking coffee and in the evenings a glass of Chardonnay. In between she spent a lot of time at the Senior Center, with her bridge groups and PEO, volunteering at the thrift shop, laughing on the phone with faraway family members, and hosting local family get-togethers.  Gloria bravely fought cancer for 14 months but it became time to join Phip. With one final, perfect twirl, she became the shimmer of the afternoon sun on the lake and the laughter echoing through generations.

Gloria is preceded in death by her parents, Shelby and Gertie Gamble, her brother, Shelby Laverne, and her husband, Philip Randall. She is survived by her sons and their wives, Dave and Mitzi Randall, and Jeff and Shelle Randall, her daughter, Wendy Randall, her daughter and husband, Kristi and Mike McCluskey; her grandchildren and their spouses, Matt and Jessie Thompson Randall, Amber and Mick Thornton, Stephanie and Jerod Fling, Derek and Rachael Randall, Taylor and Dale McIntyre, Ryan and Kate McCluskey, Shelby Schaefer, Bailey Schaefer, Brendan, and Emily McCluskey, Meghan and Noah Trapp, and Katie McCluskey; her great-grandchildren, Gavin, Sydney, Daniel, Aurora, Everleigh, Clark, Cecily, Leo, Luke, Finn, Meadow, Tate and Theodore; and, her brother and wife, Gary and Linda Gamble and their children, Steven, Cindy, and Michael.

Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at 3:00 PM at the United Methodist Church in Ainsworth with Pastor Mick Thornton to officiate at the event.  

Music is to be provided by Linda Gamble as a pianist with special music of “Beyond The Sunset” by Mitzi Randall, and the congregation to sing “The Lord’s Prayer” and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.”  Honorary Urn Bearers are Matthew Randall, Derek Randall, Ryan McCluskey, Brendan McCluskey, Gavin Olinger, and Daniel Thornton.  

Inurnment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas later on this year.

She had a gift for making those around her feel like they were the most special people in the world.Gloria was born in Elkhart, Kansas, on October 1, 1934, to Gertrude and Shelby Gamble during the Dust Bowl. Her mother used to tell the story of draping damp sheets over Gloria’s bassinet to keep out the relentless dust. Gloria’s brother, Gary, was born four years later and it was the beginning of a unique and cherished brother-sister bond. Gloria attended high school in Ashland, Kansas, where she first knew Philip “Phip” Randall. She went on to study at Washburn University. She was on the dive and synchronized swim team and loved “twirling in the water.” Gloria didn’t pay much attention to Phip. She laughed and said, “He was just too wild for me!” But one day she DID pay attention to him and everything changed. They were married in Ashland on August 29, 1954. Gloria and Phip lived in married housing on the campus of Kansas State University while he attended vet school. Gloria’s life was anything but dull thanks to Phip’s never-ending pranks. Their sons, Philip David “Dave” and Jeffrey Scott “Jeff,” were born while Phip was still in school. Upon graduation, they moved to La Crosse, then to Dodge City, and finally were home in Scott City, Kansas, where Wendy Sue and Kristi Kay, their daughters, were both born. Phip and his partner established Spencer-Randall Veterinary Clinic. Later, Phip and two friends built HRC Feed Yards. Gloria was a full-time wife and mother and loved every minute. They enjoyed their family trips, their friends and were very involved with the First Methodist Church. They developed an exceptionally dear group of friends, “the gang.” Those friendships have endured through the best and worst of times. Gloria’s children reminisce fondly about the many camping and boating trips they took to the lake while growing up. Gloria said it became a ritual for Phip to pick her up, fling her over his shoulder and toss her into the lake the minute they set up camp. Phip earned his small plane pilot’s license and flew his family back and forth to his childhood ranch home in the red dirt canyons of Ashland. The kids and their cousins played hard in the canyons. The tradition of Thanksgiving at the ranch was born. Even today, that area of Kansas is sacred to the family. K-State remained dear to Gloria and Phip in a big way. It was a sure bet that on game days during football season they’d be decked out in head-to-toe purple cheering on their Wildcats at the stadium. Gloria and her family have never stopped going to the games and when she couldn’t be in the stadium, she was on her couch watching and providing enthusiastic commentary. Phip died unexpectedly in 1977 while both boys were in college and both girls were still living at home. Gloria powered on, moved to Garden City, Kansas, and earned her real estate license and travel agent certification. Later she moved to Denver and worked for many years for the Colorado Hospital Association. It was there that she took up ballroom dancing and revived her twirl, but this time on the dance floor instead of in the water. Boating on the lake continued to be a family tradition. Gloria loved to ride in the bow of the boat, with the breeze in her hair and wearing her legendary smile. She was still waterskiing at age 70, a family record that may stand forever. Gloria’s first grandbaby was born in 1979, then came 10 more in quick succession. Gloria was always there to help and always had babies in her arms. Her best advice to the new mothers in the family was, “Don’t worry about all of the rules they tell you at the hospital - you just love that baby - it’s as simple as that.” In time Gloria left Denver and moved back to Ashland. She worked as a paraprofessional for the Ashland School District for several years. She re-established the family tradition of Thanksgiving at the ranch in the southern Kansas red dirt canyons. Her grandchildren speak reverently of those Thanksgivings. Upon retirement, she moved to Manhattan, Kansas, with her daughter, Wendy. It became a hub of activity throughout the year that peaked during the football season. Ainsworth, Nebraska, was her most recent adventure. She loved the little town and it loved her right back. In the mornings you would find her on the patio drinking coffee and in the evenings a glass of Chardonnay. In between she spent a lot of time at the Senior Center, with her bridge groups and PEO, volunteering at the thrift shop, laughing on the phone with faraway family members, and hosting local family get-togethers. Gloria bravely fought cancer for 14 months but it became time to join Phip. With one final, perfect twirl, she became the shimmer of the afternoon sun on the lake and the laughter echoing through generations.Gloria is preceded in death by her parents, Shelby and Gertie Gamble, her brother, Shelby Laverne, and her husband, Philip Randall. She is survived by her sons and their wives, Dave and Mitzi Randall, and Jeff and Shelle Randall, her daughter, Wendy Randall, her daughter and husband, Kristi and Mike McCluskey; her grandchildren and their spouses, Matt and Jessie Thompson Randall, Amber and Mick Thornton, Stephanie and Jerod Fling, Derek and Rachael Randall, Taylor and Dale McIntyre, Ryan and Kate McCluskey, Shelby Schaefer, Bailey Schaefer, Brendan, and Emily McCluskey, Meghan and Noah Trapp, and Katie McCluskey; her great-grandchildren, Gavin, Sydney, Daniel, Aurora, Everleigh, Clark, Cecily, Leo, Luke, Finn, Meadow, Tate and Theodore; and, her brother and wife, Gary and Linda Gamble and their children, Steven, Cindy, and Michael.Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at 3:00 PM at the United Methodist Church in Ainsworth with Pastor Mick Thornton to officiate at the event. Music is to be provided by Linda Gamble as a pianist with special music of “Beyond The Sunset” by Mitzi Randall, and the congregation to sing “The Lord’s Prayer” and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” Honorary Urn Bearers are Matthew Randall, Derek Randall, Ryan McCluskey, Brendan McCluskey, Gavin Olinger, and Daniel Thornton. Inurnment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas later on this year. Marjorie L. Seba, 92, died on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Harry Hynes 
Memorial Hospice in Wichita. She was born on May 29, 1928 at Rozel the 
daughter of Irvin &amp; Lola (Speer) Franz. She married Arlyn J. Seba 
on May 18, 1946 at Great Bend. He died on April 18, 2003. 
Marjorie graduated from Rozel High School. In 1959 she and her husband 
moved to Garden City and she worked in customer service at Dillon’s for 
20 years. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed 
camping with her husband, traveling and especially being involved with 
her Grandchildren. 
She is survived by her 2 Sons- Franz &amp; Marietta Seba and Kent &amp; 
Marilyn Seba all of Garden City, 4 Grandchildren- Kelly Seba Wise of 
Wichita, Jared Seba of Garden City, Jeff Seba of Hopkins, Minnesota and 
Kris Reimer of Garden City, 5 Great-Grandchildren- Addison Seba, Jace

 Elaine (Ives) Yoxall, age 92, entered into rest on Friday, August 28, 
2020, at the Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born in 
Hays, Kansas on June 29, 1928 to Harold and Hilma (Fischer) Ives.

She
 was a 1946 graduate of Stockton High School, Stockton, Kansas.&nbsp; She was
 a Cloud County Community College graduate 1983 receiving her Associates
 degree in Nursing.

On December 28, 1946 she married Edward Yoxall in Phillipsburg, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on December 21, 2004.

Elaine worked at the St. Joseph Hospital in Concordia as a Registered Nurse for 25 plus years before retiring.

She was member of American Legion and VFW of Concordia.

Elaine
 enjoyed spending time with her family, Reading, Playing marbles, 
Crocheting and Knitting and watching the KC Royals and Cheif's games.

Altha Elaine (Ives) Yoxall

Harold G. Kraus, Sr., 89, Hays, died Tuesday, May 19, 2020, at HaysMed.

He was born February 3, 1931, in Hays, 
the son of Carl and Sadie (Wilson) Kraus.&nbsp; He graduated from Hays High 
School in 1949.&nbsp; Harold attended Fort Hays State University and received
 a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from the University of Kansas 
in 1955.&nbsp; He was a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, a United States
 Naval Aviator during the Korean War, and his aircraft patrolled in the 
Atlantic during the Cold War.&nbsp; On May 5, 1960 he was united in marriage 
to Marilyn Wilson in Caldwell, New Jersey. &nbsp;She preceded him in death in
 1967.&nbsp; 

On December 8, 1968, he was united in marriage to Virginia 
Russell in Atwood, and they celebrated 51 years of marriage.&nbsp; He was a 
farmer for 45 years, and his memberships included the First United 
Methodist Church, where he was an usher for 50 years, and the Hays 
Rotary Club for 53 years, where he received the Paul Harris Fellow 
recognition.&nbsp; Harold was an Ellis County Commissioner for 16 years, 
served on the National Bio Diesel Board for 12 years, served on the 
Kansas Soybean Commission for 13 years, was a Kansas Master Farmer in 
the class of 1998, and hosted Kids Ag Day at the Kraus farm every 
September for 18 years.&nbsp; He enjoyed history, finding Indian artifacts on
 his farmland, and being in nature, birds, wildflowers, and teaching his
 family about nature.&nbsp; He developed the Kraus fishing pond and was an 
avid reader of history, biographies, and military history.

Survivors include his wife; Virginia of
 the home in Hays, five sons; Harold Kraus, Jr. and wife Cindy of 
Manhattan, Charles Kraus and wife Jenifer of Hays, Kurt Kraus and wife 
Marie of Tulsa, OK, Paul Kraus and wife Suzzette of Erie, CO, and Lance 
Russell and wife Cathy of Hays, a daughter; Ellen Pratt and husband 
Harry Joe of Hoxie, a brother; Kenneth Kraus and wife Dorothy of Omaha, 
NE, 15 grandchildren; Thomas Kraus, Lena Kraus, Lucas Kraus, Greta 
Kraus, Emma Rose Kraus, Julia Kraus, Cate Kraus, Henry Kraus, Lyle 
Russell, Brooke Russell, Fred Pratt and wife Raquelle, Jesse Franich and

Robert K. “Bob” House, 89, McCracken, Kansas, died Saturday, August 29, 2020, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Bob was born September 14, 1930, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Kenneth T. and Linda Marie (Wilson) House.&nbsp; He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. &nbsp; A 1948 graduate of McCracken High School, McCracken, Kansas, he was a farmer/stockman before his retirement.&nbsp;

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, and American Legion Post 59, both of McCracken, Kansas.&nbsp; He was a former board member of the McCracken Public Library, and the Co-op; a former member of the McCracken Rural Water District, the McCracken EMTs, and the McCracken Fire Department.

On January 21, 1987, he married Caroline D. (Klee) Davis at Gage County, Nebraska.&nbsp; She preceded him in death December 14, 1993. &nbsp;

Survivors include:&nbsp; one son, Bruce Davis (Susan), Emery, South Dakota; three daughters, Cheryl Werth (Allen), Hays, Kansas, Ellen Kershner (Bruce), Rush Center, Kansas, and Annette Chestnut (Tom), Headland, Alabama; one son in law, Donnie Schuckman, La Crosse, Kansas; 13 grandchildren, Stacy Scheetz (Jared), Melissa Thompson (Drew), Lisa Day, Matt Groff (Kelly), Kari Ragsdale (Donald), Brian Davis, Eric Davis, Clinton Kershner (Lisa), Clayton Kershner, Addie Caroline Kershner, Tyler Chestnut, Colby Chestnut, and Kaitlyn Caroline Chestnut; 18 great grandchildren; one brother, Dight A. Sylvia Byer, 82, passed away August 29, 2020, in Bartlesville, Okla. 
She was born June 15, 1938, in La Crosse, to George H. and Edith C. 
(Williams) Kaiser. Sylvia had previously been married William R. Byer.

Sylvia, a long time Great Bend resident, previously living in 
Independence, Kan., was a retired school teacher for USD 431, 
Hoisington. She was a member of SCA, and enjoyed traveling, reading, 
camping, cooking, research in various middle age topics, photography and
 genealogy.

Survivors include two sons, Troy Byer and wife Sandy of Great Bend, 
Von Byer and wife Tara of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Vicki Carvalho 
of Bartlesville, Okla. and Carla Shawn Byer of Great Bend; one sister, 
Carol Strobel of Hutchinson; and eleven grandchildren and nine great 
grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 4, 2020, at 
Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Morita Truman presiding. Interment will
 follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend. Visitation will be from 
10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, September 3, 2020 at Bryant Funeral

Robert J. “Bob” Pfannenstiel, 73, Hays, died Sunday, August 30, 2020, at HaysMed.

He was born November 30, 1946, in Hays, 
the son of Edwin and Irene (Hammerschmidt) Pfannenstiel.&nbsp; In 1964, he 
graduated from Hays High School.&nbsp; After graduation, he enlisted in the 
United States Air Force and served in Vietnam during the Vietnam War as a
 flight engineer and helicopter mechanic.&nbsp; He attained the rank of 
Sergeant in the United States Air Force and received two Air Medals.&nbsp; 


Bob worked at Travenol for many years, then worked at Home Steel Siding 
and Windows and Hess Services, Inc.&nbsp; On April 21, 2001, he was united in 
marriage to Roseann&nbsp;Arnhold&nbsp;Rincon in Hays.&nbsp; He was a member of 
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, lifetime member of the Hays 
VFW Post #9076, and former member of the Hays American Legion Post 
#173.&nbsp; Bob enjoyed vegetable gardening and also grew beautiful flowers 
including roses and sunflowers. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed 
pheasant hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.

Survivors include his wife Rose of the 
home in Hays, a son; Rob Pfannenstiel and wife Nicky of Plainville, a 
daughter; Shelley Scheck and husband John of Hays, two stepdaughters; 
Bobbi Pfeifer and husband Jay of Hays and Becky Staab of Arvada, CO, a 
brother; Freddie Pfannenstiel of Littleton, CO, five sisters; RoseAnn 
Beltch and husband James of Lawrence, Judith Schomer of Topeka, Diane 
Pfannenstiel of Sachse, TX, Shiela Houston and husband Wayne of LeRoy, 
and Brenda Fisher and husband Gerald of Hominy, OK, 11 grandchildren; 
Dalton Pfannenstiel, Kenzie Pfannenstiel, Jacob Pfannenstiel, Cody

Juanda Burdine, 58 passed away August 29, 2020 at University of Kansas Health System, Pawnee Valley Campus, Larned.

She was born March 22, 1962 in Larned; the daughter of Dale Jones and
 Sarah Beatrice Moore.&nbsp; She worked in Housekeeping and was a Mental 
Health Technician at Larned State Hospital.&nbsp; Wanting to improve her 
life, she went to school in Kansas City, Missouri to become a medical 
assistant and worked at Medicalodge of Kinsley.

She attended the Escue Chapel, CME Church in Larned and liked collecting purses and shoes.

Survivors include; father, Dale (Mary) Jones, Larned; son, Douglas 
Burdine, Hutchinson; six brothers; Tony (Katherine) Fleming, Salisbury, 
North Carolina, Jerry (Kala) Hurde, Salina, Galen Harris, Wichita, 
Daniel (Sharla) Jones, Edmond, Oklahoma, Paul (Joyce) Jones, Euharlee, 
Georgia, Eric (Kari) Jones, Wichita; three sisters; Deloris Harris,

Marlin Lloyd Bowen was born on Oct. 7, 1933 in Watertown, South Dakota 
to Frank and Agnes (Barkley) Bowen. He passed away on August 28, 2020 at
 his home in Oberlin, Kansas at the age of 86.
 Marlin graduated from Watertown High School. He married Charlotte 
Ann Schmidt on March 8, 1953 and together they had 4 children, 
Christine, Kathryn, Timothy, and Mary. He loved golfing, bowling, and 
antiques. Marlin owned Cabin Antiques in downtown Oberlin where he loved
 to talk to people as they came into his store or as they walked by.
 Marlin was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Agnes; wife, 
Charlotte; brother, Bobby Bowen; sister, Marion Robish. He is survived 
by son, Timothy Bowen of Oberlin, KS and daughters, Christine (Cara 
Frazier) Bowen of Denver, CO, Kathryn Washington of Sioux Falls, SD, and
 Mary (Don) Jacobs of Huron, SD. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren,
 13 great grandchildren, and his cat and best friend Murphy.
 A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of

Elmer Maurath on June 19, 1971. She was a registered nurse and had 
worked at the Logan County Manor for over 30 years. 
Pauline was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Mary Helen Bixenman and Daughter Meredith Maurath. 
She is survived by her husband Elmer; children, Anton “Tony” Maurath, 
Mitchell Maurath, Angela Christenson and Thomas Maurath; 4 
grandchildren, Wade Wolfe, Carson, Davis and Trenton Maurath and

Calvin Levi “Bubba” Weese Jr., 69, passed away Sunday, August 30, 
2020, at his home in Great Bend. He was born November 24, 1950, in Pratt
 the son of Calvin and Helen (Miller) Weese.

Calvin has been a Great Bend resident since 1989, coming from 
Manhattan. He was a police officer for the city of Manhattan for twenty 
years, after retiring from the police department he worked for Wal-Mart 
in Great Bend for twenty years. He was a member of Church of Christ. He 
enjoyed going to Colorado and camping, 4-wheeling and shooting.

Survivors include one son Kenneth Johnson of Wichita; two daughters 
Tina (Bill) Kausler of Junction City and Nicole (John) Stroh of 
Manhattan; four brothers Greg (Cindy) Weese of Kansas City, MO, Jeff 
(Lanette) Weese, and Kevin Weese all of Great Bend, Sean (Debbie) Weese 
of St Louis, MO.; two sisters Sherry (Tom) Stewart of Emporia, and Kim 
Jordan of Great Bend; five grandchildren Megan Wood, Ryan Francis, 
Nicholas, Konner, Korey Johnson; three great-grandchildren Molly and 
Nathan Wood and Paxton Johnson.

Services will be announced at a later time by the Family. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.

 the son of Calvin and Helen (Miller) Weese.Calvin has been a Great Bend resident since 1989, coming from 
Manhattan. He was a police officer for the city of Manhattan for twenty 
years, after retiring from the police department he worked for Wal-Mart 
in Great Bend for twenty years. He was a member of Church of Christ. He 
enjoyed going to Colorado and camping, 4-wheeling and shooting.Survivors include one son Kenneth Johnson of Wichita; two daughters 
Tina (Bill) Kausler of Junction City and Nicole (John) Stroh of 
Manhattan; four brothers Greg (Cindy) Weese of Kansas City, MO, Jeff 
(Lanette) Weese, and Kevin Weese all of Great Bend, Sean (Debbie) Weese 
of St Louis, MO.; two sisters Sherry (Tom) Stewart of Emporia, and Kim 
Jordan of Great Bend; five grandchildren Megan Wood, Ryan Francis, 
Nicholas, Konner, Korey Johnson; three great-grandchildren Molly and 
Nathan Wood and Paxton Johnson.Services will be announced at a later time by the Family. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.A memorial is suggested to the Church of Christ, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Calvin Levi 'Bubba' Weese Jr.

Allen L. Shelton, 77, of Oberlin, Kansas, died August 23, 2020, at the 
University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. He was born August 8, 1943
 at his Grandmother Desbien’s home in Damar, Kansas to James Milford and
 Stella Irene (Desbien) Shelton. He was their oldest child with brothers
 Denis, Jim, Rodney, and Maurice arriving to complete the family. Allen 
grew up in Hill City where he attended grade, junior high and high 
school, graduating in the Hill City High School Class of 1961.
 Allen graduated from Fort Hays State College in 1965 and then 
entered Washburn University School of Law in Topeka. Interestingly, his 
last two years of classes were spent in trailers after the June 8, 
1966 Topeka tornado demolished the law school. In 1968 he received his 
Juris Doctorate degree from Washburn University, where he ranked fourth 
in his class. Returning to his hometown, he joined Kenneth Clark’s law 
firm. After Allen became a partner the firm was known as Clark and 
Shelton. A high point in his career was when he was hired as a special 
prosecutor in two high-profile murder cases in the 1970’s. Through the 
years he won many appeals before the Kansas Supreme Court. Later Allen 
practiced law in both Oberlin and Smith Center. Allen was very 
passionate about his work and helped an unfathomable number of people 
through his practice. He was devoted to his clients and was “at home” in
 the courtroom. Allen practiced law until his death, a career which 
lasted 51 years.
 Leisure time found Allen enjoying hunting, fishing, reading, 
listening to music, watching old westerns and Fox News. Photography was 
another interest. He found much pleasure hiking in pastures 
photographing wildflowers, which he later researched. Allen was such an
 avid KU basketball fan and enjoyed watching all types of sports on 
ESPN. He always looked forward to taking his oldest grandson to the 
local high school basketball games. Allen’s love of learning and 
intelligence, which enabled him to answer his children’s many questions,
 as well as his sense of humor, was appreciated by them. Most of all 
Allen loved spending time with his grandkids who meant everything to 
him. They gave his life meaning.
 Allen was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his 
children: Jason Shelton, Wichita, Jordan Shelton, Portland, Oregon and 
Miranda (Tim) Gish, Oberlin; Stepchildren: Monica Larson, Carl (Des)

Allen L. Shelton

On August 28th, 2020, Bob Ritter of Great Bend passed away
 at the age of 64. Born to Roy and Kay (Wharton) Ritter of Urbana, NY on
 September 19th 1955.

Raised on the family dairy farm, Bob was quick to learn the valve of 
hard work which would remain with him for the rest of his life. After 
serving a short term in the U.S. Army (1975-1978).Bob found himself 
starting a new life in central Kansas where he would unknowingly remain.
 There Bob proudly served as a member and commander of the Stafford 
American Legion for a time.

Bob loved to work. There were always projects on his never ending to 
do list. He knew there was a way for him to repair something in order to
 keep from having to buy a new one. Working outside or inside, on houses
 or cars, Bob had to be doing something.

Bob’s love for family was even stronger. Bob is survived by his 
loving wife of fourteen years, Nancy; his five children; three 
step-children; thirteen grandchildren and one great grandson. Bob also 
leaves behind his two sisters and four brothers as well as many other 
friends and family.

A services will be held at the home of Bob and Nancy Ritter, 29 NE 30 Rd, Great Bend, KS 67530,&nbsp;Friday September 4th, 2020 at 10:30 am. No visitation will be held as cremation has taken place.

Loren Lehmann, 81, passed away Thursday, August 27, 2020 at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, KS. Loren
 was born November 3, 1938 in Gaylord, KS, the son of Adolph Frank and 
Eva Pearl (Auldridge) Lehmann.&nbsp; Loren enlisted in the United States Army
 on October 17, 1961 and was honorably discharged on October 16, 1963.&nbsp; 
On June 5, 1965 he married Jane Nicholas in Zenda, KS, they later 
divorced.&nbsp; On April 21, 1990 he married Darlene Deneke in Beloit, KS.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his wife Darlene, parents, sister Lois Hayes and an infant brother. 
 Loren is survived by his children, Billy Lehmann of Gaylord, Teresa 
(Ron) Corwin of Hutchinson, Greg (Katie) Lehmann of Concordia and four 
grandchildren, Josh and Sha Scheuerman, Mauryn Lehmann and Will Lehmann. Funeral
 Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 4, 2020 at All 
Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center, KS, with Pastor

Jeffrey Thomas Minnick was born March 11, 1972 in Lincoln, NE to Thomas 
Frederick and Cynthia (Baker) Minnick. He passed away August 24, 2020 at
 his home in Houston, TX at the age of 48.
 Jeff graduated from Decatur Community High School in 1990. After he 
graduated, he moved to Colorado where he loved to hike mountain trails 
and snow skiing. He also enjoyed watching sports, especially the NFL and
 UFC and he enjoyed going to boxing matches. Jeff also loved traveling 
and seeing new places. When his son, Sam, was younger he enjoyed 
watching him compete in motocross. Most recently, Jeff was working for 
an energy, oil and mineral company, Targa, where he had moved up to a 
supervisor position. His employers thought a lot of him and had become 
very fond of his work ethic and dependibiltiy.
 Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Minnick in 1992; 
brother, Bryan Minnick in 1992 and stepfather, Scott Dolan in 2010. He 
is survived by his sons, Samuel Minnick of Dana Point, CA and Silas 
Minnick of San Leon, TX; mother, Cyndy Dolan of Oberlin, KS; brother, 
Nathan (Karlie) Minnick of Oberlin; sister, Nicole (Justin) Sauvage of 
Oberlin and nieces and newphews: Kariah, Gage, and Brylee Minnick, 
Breckin, Talan, and Josie Sauvage.

 Wayne Rein, 81, passed peacefully on August 28, 2020 as a result of 
COVID 19 at Hays Medical Center. He was born on February 19, 1939 at the
 farm south of Bazine to Fred Rein, Jr and Clara (Stieben) Rein. 

Leland
 was the 4th of 5 children. He attended a rural grade school south of 
Bazine and graduated from Bazine High School in 1957. He married Sherron
 Hanan of Ness City at the United Methodist church on May 29, 1960. They
 lived on the farm and raised two children. His lifelong passion was 
farming. He loved his cows, working in the field and bringing in the 
wheat and milo harvest. He was a very hard working man who could be 
stubborn, ornery and cantankerous. Even though it was hard to get up in 
the tractor and combine these last few years, he found a way much to the
 chagrin of those around him. He will be greatly missed by his family 
and friends.

 was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Cletus and 
Valis, a brother-in-law Ted and a sister-in-law Joann. He is survived by
 his wife Sherron, his sisters Glendoris Blattner and Genelda (Clarence)
 Gumescheimer, his children Laura (Jack) Lowery of Fort Collins, CO and 
Steven (Cheryl) Rein of Bazine, KS. Surviving grandchildren are Kacie 
(Chad) Patterson (Thornton, CO), Lexy (Skylar) Pegg (Loveland, CO), 
Mitchell Lowery (Honolulu, HI), Chase (Hope) Rein (Colwich, KS), Colton 
(Jodi) Rein (Greensboro, NC), Jennifer (Matt) Leiker (Hays) and Brian 
(Natalie) Ellis (Hays) and 5 great grandchildren.

2020 at 10:30am at the Bazine Cemetery. A memorial service will be

Officer Mitchell&nbsp; A. “Mitch” Berens, age 52, died Friday, August 28, 2020,&nbsp; at Hays Medical Center. &nbsp; He was born August 21,1968, in Hays, Kansas to Vernon L. and Norma Jean (Kuhn) Berens.&nbsp; He married Tisha Dawn (Sader) on August 30, 2019, at Abilene, Kansas.

He was a Sergeant with the Hays Police Department for 25 years and retired in June of 2020.&nbsp; He attended the KLETC Police Academy in Hutchinson, Kansas, he received his Bachelor Degree at Fort Hays State University, and also was on the football team.&nbsp; He grew up in Victoria, Kansas and was a 1987 graduate of Victoria High School.&nbsp; Mitch enjoyed fishing, golfing, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Tisha Berens, of the home; one son, Shane Berens and Angel Bryant, Gorham, KS; one daughter, Shelbie Berens and Kevin Keith, Wichita, KS; his mother, Norma Jean Berens, Hays, KS; two brothers, Michael Berens, Victoria, KS; Matthew Berens and wife, A.J., Hays, KS; one sister, Michelle Tuma and husband, Larry, Overland Park, KS;&nbsp; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lyal and Julie Sader, Hays, KS; one step-son, Seth Bielefeld, Manhattan, KS; one step-daughter, Megan Bielefeld, Junction City, KS; a number of uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces.&nbsp;

 </figure>Officer Mitchell&nbsp; A. “Mitch” Berens, age 52, died Friday, August 28, 2020,&nbsp; at Hays Medical Center. &nbsp; He was born August 21,1968, in Hays, Kansas to Vernon L. and Norma Jean (Kuhn) Berens.&nbsp; He married Tisha Dawn (Sader) on August 30, 2019, at Abilene, Kansas.He was a Sergeant with the Hays Police Department for 25 years and retired in June of 2020.&nbsp; He attended the KLETC Police Academy in Hutchinson, Kansas, he received his Bachelor Degree at Fort Hays State University, and also was on the football team.&nbsp; He grew up in Victoria, Kansas and was a 1987 graduate of Victoria High School.&nbsp; Mitch enjoyed fishing, golfing, and spending time with his family.Survivors include his wife, Tisha Berens, of the home; one son, Shane Berens and Angel Bryant, Gorham, KS; one daughter, Shelbie Berens and Kevin Keith, Wichita, KS; his mother, Norma Jean Berens, Hays, KS; two brothers, Michael Berens, Victoria, KS; Matthew Berens and wife, A.J., Hays, KS; one sister, Michelle Tuma and husband, Larry, Overland Park, KS;&nbsp; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lyal and Julie Sader, Hays, KS; one step-son, Seth Bielefeld, Manhattan, KS; one step-daughter, Megan Bielefeld, Junction City, KS; a number of uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces.&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his father, one sister, Milissa Rae Berens and grandparents. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Mitchell  A. 'Mitch' Berens

Bradley Neil Rein, age 58, died at his home in Ness City on August 
23, 2020.&nbsp; He was born on October 29, 1961 in Ness City the son of 
Cletus and JoAnn (Dreasher) Rein.

After graduating from Bazine High School in 1980, Brad worked most of
 his life in the oil field around Ness County.&nbsp; On November 21, 1981 he 
married Cheri Stoecklein in Ness City. Together they raised two 
children.

Brad is survived by his daughter, Michelle Rein of Ness City and his 
son, Travis Rein and his wife Tisha of Wichita; five brothers, Dale of 
Burlington, Kansas, Daryl (Vonia) of Cimarron, Joel (Deneise) of 
Hutchinson, Alan of Bazine, and Myron of Ness City and three sisters, 
Cindy Rein of Wichita, Patty Legleiter (Neil) of Hays, and Julie Roane 
of Utica and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his 
parents and his sister Paula Rein.

Graveside memorial service will be held at the Bazine Cemetery on 
Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at 10:00 a.m.&nbsp; Friends may come to 
Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 1, 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 
p.m. to sign the book.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Michelle Rein Medical Fund or the Bazine Cemetery.

Bradley Neil Rein

Luther Calvin Keil, 96, passed away August 29, 2020, at McCall Manor,
 Salina. He was born July 5, 1924 at Galatia, to Siegmund and Ernestine 
(Becker) Keil. Luther married Patricia R. Browne April 21, 1947, at 
Folkston, GA. She died Oct. 19, 2010.

Luther, a Great Bend resident since 2009 coming from Framingham 
Mass., was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge, both of 
Great Bend, and the Fleet Reserve Association. He proudly served his 
country during WWII and the Korean War, retiring after 22 years from the
 U.S. Navy with the rank of Aviation Structural Mechanic Chief Petty 
Officer. Following his Navy retirement, Luther was a sales clerk for 
Macy's Department Store.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death 
by three brothers, Herbert Keil, Melvin Keil, and Arnie Keil; and three 
sisters, Milda Hopper, Leona Crotty, and Esther Kruckenberg.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 5, 2020, St. 
Mark Lutheran Church, with Rev. Adam Wutka presiding. Masks and social 
distancing are required. Interment will follow at Golden Belt Memorial 
Park, Great Bend, with military rites conducted by U.S. Navy Honor 
Guard. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday, September 4, at
 Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to St. Mark Lutheran 
Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Brenda Kay Kaus, daughter of Donald E. and Betty Jo (Jackson) Alexander, was born March 13, 1952, in Norton, Kansas, and passed away peacefully at her home in Norton, on August 28, 2020, at the age of 68.

Brenda grew up in the Norcatur community, attending the Norcatur schools and graduating with the class of 1970.  On January 9, 1971, Brenda married the love of her life, John M. Kaus, in Norton, and together they raised two children.  Brenda enjoyed being a homemaker and also worked in customer service for several local businesses.  She also spent several years as caregiver for her parents in their later years.  She and John were currently enjoying their retirement and newly-built home and spending quality time with their family, especially their grandchildren.

Brenda was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Altar Society and the American Legion Auxiliary in Norton.

Survivors include:  her loving husband, John, of their home in Norton; one daughter, Michele, and husband, Jim Railsback, Norton; one son, Mike, and wife, Jaime Kaus, Manhattan, Kansas; five grandchildren, Shyann, Cope and Knox Railsback, Norton; Carter and Kinsley Kaus, Manhattan; several brothers-and-sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Donny Joe Alexander and one sister, Barb Marvin.
