Wilda Maxine Smith, 96, died October 3,
 2020 at Hays Medical Center.&nbsp; She was born May 17, 1924 to Corwin and 
Mable (Roberts) Smith on a farm in Gove County, Kansas, one of 10&nbsp; children.&nbsp; 

During WWII, though she had just graduated from high school 
and had no teacher training, she was pressed into teaching, including 
one year in the one-room school where she had been a student.&nbsp; After the
 war, Wilda completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history at 
Fort Hays Kansas State College.&nbsp; Her master’s thesis was “The Struggle 
for Woman Suffrage in Kansas."&nbsp; She taught history at Hays High School 
from 1953-1957.&nbsp; Her Ph.D. in history was earned at the University of 
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.&nbsp; Wilda taught history at Fort Hays State 
University for 26 years, serving as chairperson of the History 
Department for five years.

Wilda served on the Kansas Committee 
for the Humanities, the Coordinating Council of the National Women’s 
Studies Association, the Executive Committee of the Kansas Council for 
Social Studies, and the Board of Directors of the Kansas State 
Historical Society.

The biography of a native Kansan, The 
Wars of Peggy Hull: The Life and Times of a War Correspondent, which she
 co-authored with Eleanor Bogart, received the C.L. Sonnichhsen Book 
Award from Texas Western Press.

Wilda was preceded in death by her 
parents, long time companion Eleanor Bogart, sister Vivian Beougher and 
brothers Marion, Raymond, Kenneth, Carl, Francis, Don, Darrell and 
Corwin, Jr.&nbsp; She is survived by a sister-in-law, Marita Smith of 
Broomfield, CO, Norma and Quentin Bogart, Mesa, AZ, and numerous nieces 
and nephews.

Because of the coronavirus, there will be a family graveside service.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to Fort Hays State University.

Lonnie F. Morgan, age 73, of Hays, KS passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at HaysMed – Hays.

He was born July 31, 1947 in La Crosse, 
KS to Friend E. and Velma (Scheuerman) Morgan.&nbsp; He grew up in Alexander,
 KS and graduated from Alexander High School in 1965 then attended Hutch 
Junior College on a basketball scholarship.

Lonnie’s hobbies included spending time
 with his sons and grandkids, together with hunting, fishing, golfing, 
playing softball and bowling.

He owned and operated Morgan Appliance Service.&nbsp; He organized bus trips to Grand Island, NE for horse races for 36 years.

Lonnie met and married Therese M. Klaus on May 8, 1982 in Hays, KS.

He is survived by his wife, Therese. 
Sons:&nbsp; Steven (Jolene) Morgan of LaCrosse; Heath (Michelle) Morgan of 
Lacrosse; Brothers: Larry Morgan of Alexander; Lance ‘Bub’ (Gloria) 
Morgan of Alexander; Layne (Kerri) Morgan of McCracken; Sisters: Leanne 
(Wade) Russell of St. John; Lorrie (Bill) Frank of Axtell; 
grandchildren: Taylor, Hunter, and Madison, together with numerous

He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws: George and Eileen Klaus; Sisters: Linda (Robert) Bott, and LaRetta Fitzwater.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, 
October 6, 2020 at 10 AM at Brock’s Keithley Funeral Chapel and 
Crematory, 2509 Vine Street, Hays, KS 67601. Visitations will be Monday,
 October 5, 2020 from 5 PM to 7 PM and Tuesday from 9 AM to service time
 all at the Funeral Chapel.

Interment will be Tuesday at 2 PM in the Alexander Cemetery.

Lonnie F. Morgan

Doyle Leon Post passed away on October 2, 2020 at the Redbud Village in 
Plainville, KS, at the age of 94. He was born on July 3, 1926 in 
Woodston, KS to James Owen and Malena Afi (Gregory) Post. Doyle married 
Lauretta Weldon on June 30, 1946 in Natoma, KS. They were blessed with 
three children: Cecelia, Linda, and Gary. Lauretta passed away in 1967 
and on August 12, 1977, Doyle married Ruth Adeline Swindler in Russell, 
KS to which 7 step-children were added to his family. Doyle and Ruth 
were together until she passed away in 2008.


Doyle grew up in Woodston and graduated from Woodston High School 
with the Class of 1944. He started off farming but then moved to 
Plainville and worked at a filling station where he taught himself how 
to work on cars. He then owned and operated Post Repair and Service from
 1971 to 1996. His career ended with 15 years at Farm Implement where he
 continued small engine repair until he was 88 years old. Doyle was a 
member of the Odd Fellow Lodge.


A hardworking man, Doyle could always be found working on something.
 While never letting anything stand in his way, he strived for 
perfection in all that he did, and knew how to have fun and enjoy life 
along the way. He will be greatly missed, but his memory will serve as 
an inspiration to those who knew him… always do what you love, and 
always love what you do.


Doyle is survived by his daughters, Cecelia Anissy of Olathe, KS and
 Linda Gilbert of Plainville; son, Gary L. Post of Wichita; brothers, 
Edson Post and wife Madonna of Wichita and Charles Post and wife Patti 
of Concordia, KS; step-children, Tom Hodges, Terry Hodges, Dean Poe, 
Cheryl Baldwin, Sandy Odle, Tammy Robertson, and Angel Fasulo; two 
grandchildren, Tirazheh Anissy and Tanya Dunn; and three 
great-grandchildren, Ethan Anissy, and Kian &amp; Kylar Lamer.


Preceding Doyle in death are his parents, James and Malena Post; 
wives, Lauretta and Ruth; brothers, James, Emery, and Delmar Post, and 
an infant brother; sister, Vola Collins; grandson, Darren Gilbert; and 
sons-in-law, Jack Gilbert and Nasser Anissy.


A graveside service and interment will be held on Tuesday, October 
6, 2020, at 2:00 P.M. at the Plainville Cemetery in Plainville, KS. 
Visitation will be Monday, 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home
 in Plainville.

Mary Murphy, 74, passed away September 28, 2020, at Wellstar Cobb 
Hospice, Smyrna, Ga. She was born on April 4, 1946, at Hoisington, to 
Fidel and Isebell (Yvarra) Torrez. She married Thomas Michael Murphy 
October 28, 1968, at Fairbury, Neb.&nbsp; He died October 17, 2016.

A current resident of Smyrna, Ga., Mary previously lived in Great 
Bend for many years. Mary was a long time Great Bend Public Library 
employee, serving as the children's director, later working for 
Sunflower Early Education Center and CKMC in Great Bend, as well as 
Wellstar Cobb Hospice in Georgia. She was a member of Prince of Peace 
Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

Survivors include, a son, Chad Murphy and wife Angela of Sterling; 
and son in law, Chris Dickson of Smyrna, Ga.; four grandchildren, 
Brittany Williams, Claire Dickson, Michael Murphy, and Caleb Murphy; and
 four great grandchildren, Kami Williams, Treacyn Williams, Anaceliya 
Murphy, and Gentry Murphy. She was preceded in death by her parents; her
 husband, Thomas Michael Murphy; and a daughter, Carrie Dickson.

Alice (Geist) Fisher, 87, Hays, died Friday, October 2, 2020 at HaysMed.

She was born April 1, 1933 in Ellis, 
the daughter of Nick and Lidwina (Kuhn) Geist.&nbsp; On May 3, 1955 she was 
united in marriage to Cyril Fisher at St. Joseph Church in Hays, and 
they celebrated 65 years of marriage.&nbsp; She worked at St. Anthony 
Hospital, Duckwalls, and Dillons before moving to Phillipsburg in 
December 1958, where she and Cyril owned and operated C &amp; A 
Floor Covering Store.&nbsp; They worked side-by-side until their retirement 
in November 1995.&nbsp; &nbsp;In February 2003, they moved back to Hays to a 
retirement home.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband Cyril of 
Hays, a sister; Albertina Rohleder and husband Val of Abilene, and many 
loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, a brother; Alfred Geist, and three sisters; Irene Windholz, 
Alberta Pfannenstiel, and Melinda Lang.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 
with Fr. Matthew Cowan officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St. Joseph

Alice (Geist) Fisher

Norton resident Elden Dale Sprague was born on February 24, 1927 to 
Earl and Hattie (Williamson) Sprague in Norton County, KS.&nbsp; He passed 
away at the Andbe Home in Norton on September 30, 2020, at the age of 
93.

&nbsp;He attended schools in Norton County and graduated from Almena High 
School.&nbsp; Elden joined the Navy on March 6, 1945 and remained until July 
8, 1946—the close of World War II.&nbsp; After his discharge, he attended 
Radio School in Texas.&nbsp; He then opened a radio and TV repair shop in 
Almena.&nbsp;

He married Lila Troutner on February 1, 1962.&nbsp; They later divorced.&nbsp; In 1967, he married Melba Farrand.&nbsp; They divorced in 1983.

Following the close of his repair shop, he opened a craft shop that 
he operated for many years in Almena and Norton.&nbsp; He was also involved 
with Boy Scouts, where he was a scout leader.&nbsp; He enjoyed building and 
flying model airplanes.&nbsp; He was an extremely talented painter.&nbsp; He 
painted beautiful landscapes on any object that you could think of, from
 milk cans to saw blades, to kitchen knives and bricks.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Hattie Sprague and a brother Arlo.

Elden is survived by his three brothers, Olin of Norton, KS, Gary of 
DeKalb, IL, Lynn of Redfield, AR; a sister, June Keiswetter of Norton, 
KS; and many nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 5, at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Almena, with Pastor Ron Martin officiating.

Mr. Sprague will lie in state from Noon until 9 p.m. Sunday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Kansas passed away October 1, 2020 at Hays Medical Center. Don was born 
April 9, 1949 in Hays, Kansas to Michael and Seraphine (Bieker) Younger.
 He graduated in 1967 from Ellis High School. On July 8, 1967 he married
 Rita (Boos) at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. They were married 
for 53 years.

Don was a Master Electrician and owned 
Don’s Electric &amp; Rewind in Ellis over 30 years. He was a long-time 
member of the Ellis Golf Club, a saxophonist as a member of the Younger 
Band and other various bands without being able to read a note. Don and 
Rita also farmed part-time for over 45 years on the family farm south of
 Ellis, and it was one of his greatest joys.&nbsp; He also enjoyed playing 
cards, playing golf and family gatherings.

He is survived by his wife Rita of 
Ellis; three sons, Donnie (Wanda) Younger, Bobby (Toni) Younger and 
Aaron (Jennifer) Younger all of Ellis; a sister, Lillian Reynolds of 
Sunrise Beach, Missouri; grandsons, Gage, Landon,&nbsp;Bryce, Cale and Mason 
Younger, granddaughter Aspen Younger along with his loving and faithful 
pet German Shepard, Mac.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, brothers, Walter, John, Bill, Michael and Robert as well as 
sisters, Evelyn, Edna and Viola.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM 
Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at St. Mary’s catholic Church in Ellis. 
Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Fr. Dana Clark will be 
officiating.

Visitation will be Tuesday 6 PM – 8 PM 
with a combined Knights of Columbus rosary and parish vigil at 7 PM all 
at St. Mary’s Church.

Don R. Younger

Robert Keith Plomondon was born 
September 8, 1931 in Plainville, Kansas, and departed this world at age 
89 on September 26, 2020. Following a short illness, Robert died at Hays
 Medical Center. He was the 10th of 12 children born to Edward and Alma 
Plomondon. Growing up in Ellis as one of nine boys, Robert enjoyed 
playing baseball and could often be found in a game at the south lot 
near the Lynd house, as the Cedar Bluff Dam homes had not yet been 
built. Other childhood activities included serving as altar boy for St. 
Mary’s Church in Ellis, Kansas, and playing on the Ellis High School 
football team.

Robert later joined the Air Force, 
attending boot camp in Wichita Falls, TX.&nbsp; He was stationed at 
Davis-Montham Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona, and attained rank of 
Staff Sergeant after serving from 1951-1955.&nbsp; Robert’s duties included 
recycling and adjusting atomic bombs. With the G.I. Bill, Robert then 
attended Fort Hays State University where he was conferred a degree in 
mathematics.

After landing his first job in North 
Carolina with Western Electric, Robert met his wife of 34 years, Betty 
Blue Brown.&nbsp; They married at the Sacrament Catholic Church in 
Burlington, North Carolina on November 19, 1960, and were separated by 
Betty’s death in 1994 of breast cancer. They had no children.

From North Carolina, Robert and Betty 
moved to Morristown, New Jersey, where Robert continued his career with 
Western Electric.&nbsp; They enjoyed plays in New York City with brother 
Ernie and wife Kay. Western Electric then transferred Robert to the 
Kwajalein Islands, where he and Betty lived for 4 years while Robert 
developed guidance systems for radar that tracked overhead missiles.&nbsp; 
After retiring from Western Electric in the mid-80’s, Robert ran his own
 business in Commerce City, Colorado manufacturing and selling asphalt 
cutters.&nbsp; For the last several years until present, Robert owned and 
managed a business renting warehouse space to other companies.&nbsp; Robert 
had a wonderful work ethic and no plans to ever stop working.

Robert spent much of the past 22 years 
with his longtime companion, LaDonna Martin.&nbsp; Robert and LaDonna spent 
many evenings doing what they each loved most, dancing at local dance 
halls. Robert was quite a dancer and could jitterbug and ballroom dance 
beautifully.&nbsp; Her daughter and son, along with their spouses and kids, 
considered Robert a part of the family.&nbsp; &nbsp;Affectionately known as 
“Plumbob” to the grandkids, Robert will be fondly remembered for his 
innumerable life stories. From digging a well as a youth to supply water
 to his home, to playing for the men’s volleyball team when stationed in
 the islands, Robert had many adventures.

Robert was predeceased by his wife, 
Betty, parents, Edward and Alma, and siblings, Lawrence, Dennis, Norman,
 Ernie, Cecilia, Richard, Mary Ann, James, and Roger.&nbsp; He is survived by
 younger brother, Donald Plomondon of Denver, Colorado, older sister 
Rita Schlotterback of Bellingham, Washington, significant other, LaDonna
 Martin of Ellis, Kansas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Howard Michael “Mike” Boys, 72, passed away June 4, 2020, at Via 
Christi St. Francis, Wichita. He was born on April 15, 1948,at 
Shelbyville, Ill to Richard and Nixie (Smith) Boys. He married Jolene 
Sellens on March 8, 1969, at Hoisington. She survives.

A current Great Bend resident, Mike was an insurance agent for 25 
years. He was a graduate of Hoisington High School and attended 
Pittsburgh State University.

Survivors include, his wife, Jolene Boys of the home; two sons, 
Gregory Boys of Great Bend, and Christopher Boys and wife Dalila of 
Dodge City; two sisters, Sandra Daughtery and husband Larry of Russell, 
and Terry Perry and husband Rick of Benton; and three grandchildren, 
Caleb, Conner, and Camila. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, 
October 3, 2020, at Heartland Community Church with Pastor Arlyn 
Thielenhaus and Pastor Tom Swain presiding. Memorials are suggested to

Betty L. Schneweis, 88, died October 2, 2020, in Odin, Kansas. She 
was born November 30, 1931, in Pawnee Rock, Kansas, the daughter of 
William and Ina (Fry) Dooling. Betty attended Larned High School.

She was married to Charles Edward Walker from 1951 to 1971. She then 
married Arthur F. Schneweis on November 19, 1971, in St. John, Kansas.

Betty and her husband Art were both self employed telephone 
contractors. They were both very patriotic and would always be at the 
veteran’s services, where she would often assist with the playing of 
taps.

Betty was a member of the Church of Christ in Great Bend. For a time 
she lived in Texas where she was a member of the Horticulture Club and 
would judge floral shows. She was very artistic and a good seamstress. 
Betty was also an avid animal lover, she loved all animals and 
especially doted on her fur babies.

Survivors include; her husband of nearly 49 years, Arthur F. 
Schneweis; son, Bruce Walker; daughters, Pat Anderson and husband Andy, 
and Lynnda Kirbow and husband Jeff; and three great grandchildren, 
Nathan, Heaven, and Brent.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles Walker; 
infant son, Dereck John Walker, and granddaughter, Krystle Leigh.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, with family to receive 
friends from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 10 
a.m., Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at Church of Christ, Great Bend, with

Alfred “Bud” Clarence Lager died on October 1, 2020 at the Sheridan 
County Long Term Care in Hoxie, KS. Bud was born on August 24, 1927, in 
Hays, KS, to Fred and Irene (Comeau) Lager. The family grew up on a farm
 north of Grinnell, KS. Bud was the oldest of 6 children.  He met Bonita
 Heim at a local dance and they were married on August 23, 1950.  
Together they raised 4 children on a dairy farm north of Grinnell, KS, 
before moving into Grinnell in 1997. 


Bud loved the land and enjoyed the beauty of seeing the cycle of life in
 the seasons.  Whether on a tractor, combine, or in the barn milking 
cows, Bud knew the gift of hard work and the dedication it takes to 
provide for a family. He loved playing cards, loved going to polka 
dances with Bonnie, loved visiting with family and neighbors, attending 
farm auctions and learning the latest about the farming and the dairy 
industry.


Bud was dedicated to his faith and was a member of the Knights of 
Columbus for 75 years. Rarely did he miss Mass on Sunday and he modeled 
for his children a love for the Church. 


Bud is survived by sons, Ron (Linda), of Grinnell, KS, Father John, of 
Denver, CO, and Mark ,of Ventura, CA; his sisters, Rose (†Willard) 
Hughes, of Oakley, KS, Pat (†Martin) Hampel, of Kingman, KS, and Janet 
(Steve) Kaiser, of Quinter, KS; sister in law Susan (†Edwin) of Yukon, 
OK; grandchildren, Julie (Chris) Ribardo, of Bryan, TX, Brenda, of Hays,
 KS, Nate (Kelly), of  Wichita, KS, Father Brian, of Hays, KS, Kevin 
(Melanie), of Seguin, KS, Marty (Abbie), of Colby, KS, and Austin, of 
Atchison, KS, and 16 great grandchildren. 


He was preceded in death by, his wife Bonnie who died this past March; 
his daughter Shirley Pianalto (†Joe) and granddaughters, Annie and 
Jennie; infant sons Kevin, Michael, and Joseph; granddaughter-in-law 
Hannah Lager and infant son Matthias Lager, and his brother Leroy.

Alfred Clarence 'Bud' Lager

Duane Leo Steeples passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at the 
Rooks County Health Center, Plainville, KS, at the age of 92. He was 
born on January 15, 1928 to Chester and Olive (Kobler) Steeples in Hays,
 Kansas. Duane was united in marriage to Carol Ann (Fell) Steeples on 
July 26, 1950 in Stafford, Kansas. To this union, Kay, John, Carla, and 
Kristi were born.


Duane was a lifetime resident of Rooks County. He attended school in
 Palco and graduated from Palco High School with the class of 1946. He 
later attended Kansas State University and graduated in 1950 with a 
Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Education. Following his graduation, 
he accepted a teaching position in Almena, KS creating the first Vo Ag 
program there. After two years he returned to the family farm joining 
his dad and brother Hillon. 


Duane loved all aspects of agriculture and had a talent for welding,
 corral building and mechanics.  He and Carol were recognized by Kansas 
State University, receiving the Master Farmer-Master Farm Homemaker 
Award in 1993. He served on the Kansas State Board of Agriculture and 
Kansas State Fair Board from 1975 to 1990. Duane also enjoyed the 
brotherhood of the Masonic Lodge, the Isis Shrine, The Palco United 
Methodist Church, and was a loyal Lions Club Member for more than 50 
years. 


Duane worked hard and loved greatly. In the words of 2 Timothy, he 
has “fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith” and 
is now awarded with an eternity in Heaven. For that we rejoice, until we
 see him again. 


Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carol Ann Steeples of 
Palco; children, Kay (William) Keck of Scottsdale, AZ, John (Cynthia) 
Steeples of Palco, KS, Carla (Tom) Stanley of Dodge City, KS, and Kristi
 Nyberg of Raleigh, NC; sister, Dr. Donnalea (Dr. Richard) Childs of

 Kansas. Duane was united in marriage to Carol Ann (Fell) Steeples on 
July 26, 1950 in Stafford, Kansas. To this union, Kay, John, Carla, and 
Kristi were born.
Duane was a lifetime resident of Rooks County. He attended school in
 Palco and graduated from Palco High School with the class of 1946. He 
later attended Kansas State University and graduated in 1950 with a

Duane Leo Steeples

Alvin Joseph Schrandt passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2020 in his 
home at the age of 91, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 
11, 1929 to William and Catherine (Adam) Schrandt in Plainville, Kansas.
 He was united in marriage to Betty (Camerer) Schrandt on May 5, 1956 at
 the Sacred Heart Church in Plainville. They were blessed with a 
daughter, Regina and later fostered ten other children.


Alvin spent his life in the Plainville area. Following the 8th grade
 he went to work on the family farm and didn’t stop until his health no 
longer allowed him to put in the long hours and strenuous labors the 
fields and livestock required. He was awarded in the early 2000’s the 
Century Farm Award. He worked hard and enjoyed the company of his family
 to assist in the jobs on the farm. Alvin never missed an opportunity 
for his grandkids, or any kids for that matter, to help him tend to the 
fields or livestock. He was a father figure to not only his child and 
the kids he and Betty fostered, but even to his nieces, nephews, 
grandkids, and people outside of the family. Alvin was proud to be 
involved in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of
 Columbus, and a part of the Farm Bureau. 


It has been said, “Kindness is like a seed that when cultivated will
 continue to grow and grow.”  Alvin was a kind and loving man who lived 
to serve his family, friends, and neighbors.  He not only tended the 
farm ground that made a living for his family, but he tended the hearts 
and souls of all knew him and made a life that will continue to grow for
 eternity.


Alvin is survived by his daughter, Regina (Dave) Riley of 
Plainville; sisters, Grace McManus of Lincoln, NE, Edna Stone of 
Phoenix, AZ, Marcella McFadden of CA and Willie Reeves of Plainville, 
KS; nine-grandchildren, K.C. Kraushaar, Nicole Wise, Lacy Kraushaar, 
Amanda Fry, Joseph Kraushaar, Rochelle Fredrick, Matthew Riley, Michael 
Riley, and Mark Riley; two foster children, Bryan (Machelle) Varney of 
IA and Linda (Doyle) Adams of MO; twenty great-grandchildren, two 
great-great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.


He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Catherine 
Schrandt; wife, Betty Schrandt; siblings, Edwin Schrandt and Lucille 
Leikam; a grandchild, Rebecca Riley and two great-grandchildren, Phoenix
 Wise and Cecilia Graf.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2020
 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville at 10:30 AM.

Alvin Joseph Schrandt

William N. “Bill” Young, 88, of Lyons, passed away September 30, 2020 at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons. He was born May 21, 1932 in Lyons, the son of Frank and Marjorie Arensdorf Young. 

Bill was a lifetime Rice County Resident. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy in Hays, Kansas; and later attended Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Bill served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Puerto Rico. After returning to Lyons, Bill worked in the family Chevrolet dealership. He later became owner of Young Motor Company in Lyons, retiring in 1997. 

He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons, Knights of Columbus, former member of U.S.D. 405 School Board, former member of City of Lyons Planning Commission, and former member of Lyons Public Library Board. 

On September 22, 1958, Bill was united in marriage with Eleanor E. Maris at St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons. She survives of the home. He is also survived by his son, Daniel Young of Olathe, KS; three daughters, Cynthia West and husband Doug of Lee’s Summit, MO, Mary Borgen and husband Brian of Osage Beach, MO, and Catherine Jones of Parkville, MO; sister, Barbara Miller of Kansas City, KS; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. 

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert F. Young and James F. Young; and two sisters, Elizabeth “Betty” Higgins and Mary Kathryn Amato. 

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 A.M., Monday, October 5, 2020 at St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons, with Father Patrick Kotrba officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery, Lyons. William N. 'Bill' Young

Robert Ray Tubbs, 87, died Wednesday September 30 at his farm north of 
Levant. He was born September 25, 1933 to Harold and Elma Tubbs.  He was
 an only child. As a child growing up on the Tubbs family homestead, he 
attended Bunker Hill School. On January 9, 1955 he married Caroline 
Prokop in Colby, KS.


He was always involved in farming.  As a young man, he worked as a farm 
hand for Arley Christiansen and then Willard “Bill” Miller.  He also 
continued to help his father with the cattle and farming.  He later 
ventured out on his own and continued farming the family land.  Although
 he cussed the weather, the weeds and equipment, farming was his life 
and he loved it.


He was preceded in death by his wife Caroline; his parents; daughter Peggy and granddaughter Sara.


Survivors include his daughter Kathy (Rick) Homan; sons, Allen (Karen) 
Tubbs, Dennis (Robin) Tubbs and Justin (Angela) Tubbs; nine 
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.


Visitation will be from 3-7:00 p.m. Monday, October 5, 2020, at Baalmann
 Mortuary, Colby, with the family greeting friends from 5-7:00 p.m.

Twylah Ann Hollembeak, 90, passed away October 1, 2020, at Almost 
Home in Great Bend. She was born on September 6, 1930, at Waverly to 
Harry &amp; Elsie (Kunkel) Schmidt. She married Roy Hollembeak on 
December 24, 1949, at Council Grove.&nbsp; He died May 17, 2001.

A Great Bend resident, Twylah was a school secretary for USD 428. She
 was a member of Central Baptist Church, ABW, and taught Sunday school 
for 50 years. She had a deep love for her faith. She enjoyed gardening, 
sewing, canning and quilting. She especially loved to spend time with 
her grandchildren.

Survivors include, two sons, Bruce Hollembeak and wife Jeanne of 
Wichita, and Hal Hollembeak and wife Cindy of Great Bend; a daughter, 
Paula Laudick of Wichita; a brother, Paul Schmidt and wife Ada Faye of 
Liberty, Tex.; a sister, Judy Anna Schmidt of Parsons; six 
grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death 
by her parents; her husband, Roy Hollembeak; a daughter, Brenda Royce; a
 brother, Harry Schmidt, Jr.; a sister, Wilma Kay Michel; and a son in 
law, Ron Laudick.

Twylah Ann Hollembeak

James B. Slemp, 92, La Crosse, Kansas, died Wednesday, September 30, 
2020, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La 
Crosse, Kansas.

James was born February 19, 1928, in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, the son
 of Joseph Kermit and Reta (Yeary) Slemp.&nbsp; He was a resident of Rush 
County, Kansas, since 1984, moving from Florida.&nbsp; A graduate of Big 
Stone Gap High School, Big Stone Gap, Virginia, he owned a mobile home 
manufacturing business before his retirement.

He was a member of the VFW, and a life member of the NRA.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in Korea.

On September 22, 1949, he married Billie J. Greene in Pennington Gap, Virginia.&nbsp; She preceded him in death December 25, 2018.

Survivors include:&nbsp; one son, Joseph Slemp (Linda), La Crosse, Kansas;
 one daughter, Nancy Bollermann, Perry, Florida; three grandchildren, 
Jeremy Slemp (Ashley), Hoisington, Kansas, Lacy Quake (Andrew), Three 
Rivers, Michigan, and Ron Reed (April), La Crosse, Kansas; six great 
grandsons; and one brother, Ray Slemp, Fort Smith, Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son in law, Paul Bollermann; and one brother, Joe Slemp.

James B. Slemp, 92, La Crosse, Kansas, died Wednesday, September 30, 
2020, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La 
Crosse, Kansas.James was born February 19, 1928, in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, the son
 of Joseph Kermit and Reta (Yeary) Slemp.&nbsp; He was a resident of Rush 
County, Kansas, since 1984, moving from Florida.&nbsp; A graduate of Big 
Stone Gap High School, Big Stone Gap, Virginia, he owned a mobile home 
manufacturing business before his retirement.He was a member of the VFW, and a life member of the NRA.He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in Korea.On September 22, 1949, he married Billie J. Greene in Pennington Gap, Virginia.&nbsp; She preceded him in death December 25, 2018.Survivors include:&nbsp; one son, Joseph Slemp (Linda), La Crosse, Kansas;
 one daughter, Nancy Bollermann, Perry, Florida; three grandchildren, 
Jeremy Slemp (Ashley), Hoisington, Kansas, Lacy Quake (Andrew), Three 
Rivers, Michigan, and Ron Reed (April), La Crosse, Kansas; six great 
grandsons; and one brother, Ray Slemp, Fort Smith, Arkansas.He was preceded in death by his parents; his son in law, Paul Bollermann; and one brother, Joe Slemp.Visitation will be Tuesday, October 6, 2020, from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas.Funeral service will be Tuesday, October 6, 2020, at 11:00 A.M. at

Leonard A. Mastroni, 71, La Crosse, died Wednesday, September 30, 2020, at HaysMed.

He was born May 28, 1949, in Bridgeport,
 Connecticut, the son of Leonard J. and Gladys (Glaser) Mastroni.&nbsp;&nbsp;On 
July 1, 1969, he was united in marriage to Linda Johnson in Englewood, 
Colorado, and they celebrated 51 years of marriage.&nbsp;&nbsp;He graduated from 
Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in political 
science.&nbsp;&nbsp;Leonard was a police officer in the Denver, Colorado area, 
supervising officer of the Central Kansas Drug Task Force, District 
Court Judge in the Kansas 24th Judicial District for 28 years, Rush 
County Commissioner, State Representative for the 117th District, and 
with his son, was a mechanic at J &amp; L Automotive.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a member 
of First Christian Church in LaCrosse, enjoyed being his children’s 
gymnastics coach, drag racing, spending time at his lake cabin, and 
fishing.&nbsp;&nbsp;Most of all, he loved spending time with his children and 
grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Linda, of 
the home in Lacrosse, a son; James L. Mastroni and wife Erin of Hays, a 
daughter; Sarah Pfannenstiel and husband Adam of Eagle, CO, a 
son-in-law; Mark A. Sizemore of LaCrosse, three brothers; Joseph 
Mastroni of Littleton, CO, Jim Mastroni and wife Mo of Littleton, CO, 
and Richard Mastroni and wife Ruth of Lakewood, CO, three grandchildren;
 Mark Alan Sizemore, Amanda Sizemore, and Sutton Mastroni, and numerous 
nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son; Shawn Mastroni and a daughter; Sheila Sizemore.

A public visitation will be from 5:00 
pm until 7:00 on Monday, October 5, 2020, at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral
 Home in Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;There will be a private funeral service with burial 
following in the LaCrosse City Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp;Memorials are suggested to the
 family, payable to Linda Mastroni, in care of the funeral home.

Blanche VonLintel, age 99, of Hays, Kansas passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Society, Hays. She was born July 10, 1921 in Ellis County, Kansas to Andrew and Adeline (Rupp) Rupp. She was married to Ben VonLintel who preceded her in death in 1985.

Blanche was a long time Hair Stylist owning her first salon at the age of 18 and continued her 50 year career until her retirement from Blanche's. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church and the daughters of Isabella. Blanche had a particular fondness for dogs.

She is survived by two sons, William VonLintel and wife Laura of Hays and John VonLintel and wife Robie of Florida; five grandchildren, Amy and Megan VonLintel, Ben and Nick VonLintel and Jacob VonLintel and wife Joanne of Hays; five great grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Marq Rupp of Kansas City, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Dr. Thomas VonLintel; infant daughter, Gloria VonLintel; a grandson, J.T. VonLintel and brothers, Mike, Francis, Hank and Marvin Rupp.

Family services will be 11:30 AM Friday, October 2, 2020 at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Blanche VonLintel

Caterina “Rina” Amoruso was born in Naples, Italy on January 21, 1922 to John Giovanni and Carolina Amoruso. Rina spent many hard years growing up and surviving during WWII.

Rina married Jess Clarence Miller on July 11, 1945 in Naples, Italy. Rina was an Italian war bride.

After Rina and infant son David arrived in the USA on June 17, 1946, she took up residency as a farm wife in Bazine, KS alongside her husband Jess Clarence Miller.&nbsp; Rina found she loved farming and enjoyed “playing in the dirt” and helping things grow.&nbsp; Rina loved all her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.&nbsp; She also loved all those who lived around her both on the farm and in town. Rina and Jess taught their children and grandchildren to be good people and hard workers.

To the marriage of Jesse and Rina Miller was born David Richard Miller (Deceased) Virginia Fay Depperschmidt, and husband Leo, Edna Kay Ayres, Linda Lou Denning, Marlene Jean Winter and husband Roland, and Julie Jane Tejeda and husband Eddie.

Rina is preceded in death by her husband on January 27, 1998; her parents John and Caroline; brothers Benidetto Amoruso, Pasquale Amoruso, and Nicolo Amoruso; and her sister Nietta Delauro.&nbsp;

Rina is survived by the above mentioned; children and spouses. She was a loving Grandmother to Trina Coast, Lori Strasser, Jason Herl, Jared Herl (Megan), Jesse Denning (Jennifer), Molly Gauger (Josh), Rolland Winter, Joey Roth (Matt), Julianna Montgomery (Brian), and Megan Coleman (Jesse), Lana Kirkley (Martin).

Rina has many great grandchildren including CJ Coast, Kevin Coast, Kristina Herl, Connor Harrell, Cayden Harrell, Bailey Harrell, Saige Herl, Wyatt Herl, Maverick Herl, Morley Coleman, Hadley Coleman, Alexis Winter (Fiance Skyler Markham), Jake Montgomery, Joey Montgomery, Cameron Roth, Haley Roth, Melody Gauger.&nbsp;

Rina also has much love for her great-great grandchildren Araya Coast and Everette Winter, as well as many nieces and nephews and family.&nbsp;

Services will be 1:00 PM Saturday, October 3, 2020 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Hays. Pastor Rocco Mallardi will officiate. Burial will follow in the Crandall Cemetery in rural Bazine, Kansas.

Visitation will be Saturday 12:00 PM until service time at the church.
