Robert “Bob” Joseph Weis, 72, of Hoxie, Kansas passed away surrounded by
 his loved ones Friday, January 15, 2021, at the Sheridan County Long 
Term Care in Hoxie after a brave battle with cancer.  He was born in 
Colby, Kansas, January 29, 1948, to Raymond and Germaine (Kruse) Weis the
 third of nine children. 

He grew up on the farm and attended Leoville 
Grade and High School graduating with the class of 1965. After high 
school, he attended Northwest Kansas Technical School where he earned a 
certificate as a Diesel Mechanic. Following his graduation from 
Technical School, he entered the United States Army. After serving his 
country, Bob met the love of his life Verna “Jane” Hake. They were 
married May 20, 1972, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Colby, 
Kansas. They moved to Hoxie where they have made their home for 
forty-nine years and raised their three children Chris, Melissa and 
Dennis. 
 Bob worked for Tebo Implement for a short while before going to 
Taylor Implement where he spent most of his career as a Diesel Mechanic 
retiring seven years ago. He did work for Archie Moss helping with 
farming as well as helping his brother with harvest. Bob worked hard, 
but when he could he enjoyed hunting, fishing and tinkering in his 
garage. He especially liked pheasant hunting with his son, Dennis. 
Camping and traveling with his Jane and the family was one of his most 
favorite activities. Bob and Jane had the opportunity to travel and 
visit many interesting places. Top of the list for Bob was to be with 
and spend time with his loving wife and soulmate, Jane. 
 Bob is survived by his wife, Jane of Hoxie, Kansas; son, Dennis 
Weis (Tami) of Parker, Colorado; daughters, Chris Breinig (Steve) of 
Hays, Kansas and Melissa Weis (Cindy) of DeLeon, Texas; mother, Germaine
 Weis of Colby, Kansas; brothers, Norbert Weis of Hoxie, Kansas and 
Frank Weis (Ester) of Akron, Colorado; sisters, Dolores Mauck (Roger) of
 Hoxie, Kansas, Jane Fleming (Jim) of Lindsborg, Kansas, Joan Long 
(Carl) of Missouri, Jean Cech (Joe) of Goodland, Kansas, and Rose Weis 
of Round Rock, Texas; and grandchildren, Jordan Breinig and Riley Weis.
 He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Weis, brother, Steve Weis; and granddaughter, Alyssa Haddock.
 A Celebration of Life Service is planned for Saturday, February 6, 
2021, 10:30 A.M. at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie, Kansas. A 
Visitation and Vigil/Rosary Service will be held on Friday, February 5, 
2021, with the visitation from 1:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., and

Cecil Joseph Miller, 84, former Executive Vice President of Manufacturing at Beechcraft, died Monday, February 1, 2021. Private Memorial Rosary and Service at Church of the Magdalen. 

Cecil graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy (now Thomas More Prep) and was an alumni of Wichita State University where he played football for one year. He was a lifelong Shocker basketball fan. He was also a HAM radio hobbyist. 

Preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Alvina Miller; brother, Arthur A. Miller; sister, Amelia Meis; daughter, Jacque Price. 

Survived by his wife, Gloria Joan Miller; daughter, Jenifer (Dwight) Jones of Colorado Springs, CO; son, Jeff (Dottie) Miller of Orange City, IA; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sister, Alvina Miller, O.P. of Great Bend, KS; sister-in-law, Maria Miller of Longview, TX; son-in-law, Shaun Price.

JoAnn A. (Lamont) Caldwell, 70, passed away in Wichita, KS on Jan. 
29, 2021. Born on Jan. 5th, 1951 in Smith Center, KS she was the 
daughter of Cecil and Carmen (Waters) Lamont. JoAnn grew up on a farm in
 Kensington, KS later graduating from HS in 1969. She later graduated 
from Cloud Co. College in Concordia, KS with a BS in Nursing. Mrs. 
Caldwell went on to work 40 years as a nurse and caregiver in 
Phillipsburg, Smith Center, &amp; Hays. She married Curtis Caldwell on 
Aug. 24th, 1978 in Kensington, KS.&nbsp;

Survivors include daughters, Samantha Diaz, Great Bend, KS, Heidi 
Freeman (Chester), Ellinwood, KS, Mackenzie Flinn (Stan), Hays, KS; 
brothers, Dennis Lamont (Elaine) and Steven Lamont (Deb); sisters, 
Connie Pennington (Robert) and Mary Smith. Other survivors include 9 
grandchildren, 2&nbsp;great-grandchildren, and 3 step-grandchildren. JoAnn

Agnes Marie Hernandez of Scott City, 59, died February 2, 2021, in Hays, 
Kansas. She was born May 11, 1961 in Satanta, Kansas, the daughter of 
Walter and Madelyn (Woodson) Hoffman. 
Agnes was born in Satanta, grew up in Garden City, and most recently 
resided in Scott City. She had worked as a waitress at various 
restaurants in Southwest Kansas. She married Paulo Hernandez in Scott 
City on July 31, 1998. He died June 5, 2019. She enjoyed taking long 
walks, traveling to the mountains, and going to the carnival with 
family, but what she loved most was always checking up on everyone. She
 was a talented seamstress, crocheted many beautiful pieces, and could 
also fix any car. Her family will cherish the memories of her sweet 
smile and infectious laugh. 
She is survived by her Daughters-Telsa Martinez of Scott City and 
Esperanza Hernandez of Satanta; Grandchildren-Maricio, Emilio, Alencio, 
Andrew and Alia &amp; Siblings- Howard Hoffman, Harold Hoffman and 
Marilyn Hoffman. In addition to her Husband and Parents she was 
preceded in death by her Grandson-Alex &amp; Siblings-Henry Hoffman,

Melvia Jane Leiker, 79, Hays, died Thursday, February 4, 2021, at her home surrounded by family.

She was born August 22, 1941, in Hays 
the daughter of Ben M. and Agnes Louise (Younger) Rupp.&nbsp; In 1959, she 
graduated from Girls Catholic High School.&nbsp; On June 3, 1961 she was 
united in marriage to Donald W. Leiker in Hays, and they celebrated 52 
years of marriage before he preceded her in death on June 16, 2013.&nbsp; She
 worked at Wiesner’s Department Store, cleaned the Romme Real Estate 
Building, and was a homemaker and a gifted seamstress.&nbsp; Jane was a 
member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella 
Circle #254, and enjoyed sewing, cooking, camping at the lake, and 
spending time at their home in Pfeifer.&nbsp; She had a wonderful sense of 
humor, was feisty, had tremendous faith, and loved spending time with 
her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons:&nbsp; Curtis J. 
Leiker and Kyle A. Leiker and wife Melissa all of Hays, a sister-in-law:
 Viola “Ollie” Rupp of Hays, three nephews: Bernie Rupp, Vernon Rupp, 
and Mitch Leiker, a niece: Ruth Dreher, four grandchildren: Kaysha 
Weigel and husband Chris, Christy, Cole, and Clay Leiker, and seven 
great grandchildren: Kali, Emersyn, Danika, Brantlee, Ryder, and Kylie 
Leiker, and Kaisley Weigel.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, husband Donald, daughter Kala Marie Augustine, brother Charles 
M. Rupp, sister Diana “Dottie” Windholz, brother-in-law Delmar Windholz,
 and a niece Deborah Ann Marie “Debbie” Rupp.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church 
with Fr. Brian Lager officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the St. Joseph

John Paul "J.P." Christian, 55, Hill City, died Wednesday, January 27, 
2021, at his home. He was born in Tokyo, Japan, to Donald and Marlene 
(Neemertens) Sarment. He married Christina Nguyen, in 2006 in Santa 
Clara, California.
 He is survived by his father and mother both of California; his 
brother Joe Sarment of Florida, his sister Sheri Wojcik, Washington 
State, his wife, Christina of the home; his son J.P. Christian, 
daughters: Sarah Christian and Maryanne Christian both of the home.

John Paul 'J.P.' Christian

Gary L. Miller, 79, Hays, died Tuesday, February 2, 2021, at HaysMed.

He was born January 18, 1942, in 
Fremont, Nebraska the son of John and Iris (Long) Miller. He was a 1962 
graduate of Ellis High School and served in the U.S. Army. &nbsp;On May 29, 
1965, he was united in marriage to Bernie Younger in Antonino, Kansas, 
and they celebrated 55 years of marriage. &nbsp;He was a truck driver and in 
his retirement years, worked at Minooka Park at Wilson Lake.&nbsp; He was a 
member of Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church.&nbsp; He enjoyed 
woodworking, woodburning, and meticulously caring for his vehicles.&nbsp; 
Gary and Bernie spent many years together camping and traveling, with 
long stays in Arizona and visiting other states including Alaska and 
Hawaii.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife Bernie of 
Hays, two sons: Chris Miller and wife Melody of Kansas City and Steve 
Miller and wife Emily of Hays, a brother: Jack Miller of Greeley, CO, a 
sister-in-law: Barbara Miller of Salina, four grandchildren: Mason, 
Zach, and Chloe Miller, and Aaron Holmberg, and a granddaughter due in 
June.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Ron Miller.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Saturday, February 6, 2021, at Our Lady Help of Christians 
Catholic Church in Antonino. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
 Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 8:00 on Friday at Hays Memorial

Fremont, Nebraska the son of John and Iris (Long) Miller. He was a 1962 
graduate of Ellis High School and served in the U.S. Army. &nbsp;On May 29, 
1965, he was united in marriage to Bernie Younger in Antonino, Kansas, 
and they celebrated 55 years of marriage. &nbsp;He was a truck driver and in 
his retirement years, worked at Minooka Park at Wilson Lake.&nbsp; He was a 
member of Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church.&nbsp; He enjoyed 
woodworking, woodburning, and meticulously caring for his vehicles.&nbsp; 
Gary and Bernie spent many years together camping and traveling, with 
long stays in Arizona and visiting other states including Alaska and 
Hawaii.&nbsp;He is survived by his wife Bernie of 
Hays, two sons: Chris Miller and wife Melody of Kansas City and Steve 
Miller and wife Emily of Hays, a brother: Jack Miller of Greeley, CO, a 
sister-in-law: Barbara Miller of Salina, four grandchildren: Mason, 
Zach, and Chloe Miller, and Aaron Holmberg, and a granddaughter due in 
June.He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Ron Miller.Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Saturday, February 6, 2021, at Our Lady Help of Christians

Theresa A. Basgall, 92, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Monday, February 1, 2021, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

Theresa was born January 1, 1929, in Schoenchen, Kansas, the daughter
 of Alex and Pauline (Graf) Munsch.&nbsp; She was a lifelong resident of 
Ellis County, Kansas, and Rush County, Kansas.&nbsp; She was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

On May 13, 1947, she married John W. Basgall, Jr..&nbsp; He preceded her in death July 5, 2003.

Survivors include:&nbsp; one son, Terrence “Terry” Basgall, La Crosse, 
Kansas; one daughter in law, Pam Basgall, Hobbs, New Mexico; four 
grandchildren, Connie Basgall, Hobbs, New Mexico, Becky Rolan (John), 
Hobbs, New Mexico, Adam Basgall, Lubbock, Texas, and Nicholas Basgall, 
Charlotte, North Carolina; six great grandchildren; and 14 great great 
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Gary 
Basgall; nine siblings, Lorraine Herrman, Martina Legleiter, Agnes 
McMichael, George Munsch, Eleanor Basgall, Agedius “Whitey” Munsch, 
Edmund Munsch, Estella Brening, and Hilda Marie Munsch; and&nbsp; eight step 
siblings, Albina Beer, Albinus Munsch, Felicita Weichen, Severin Munsch,
 Jerome Munsch, Ted Wolf, Coletta Pfannenstiel, and Teckla Gabel.

Visitation will be Friday, February 5, 2021, from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Church visitation will be Saturday, February 6, 2021, from 9:00 A.M.

Margie Marie LeSage passed away 
Saturday, January 30th, 2021, at Good Samaritan Society in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp;
 She was born July 20, 1925, in rural Graham, Kansas to Elery and Blanche
 Fitch.&nbsp; She was the youngest of three children.

She married Chet LeSage on October 16, 
1948.&nbsp; They made their home in Stockton, Kansas until moving to Hays in 
1987.&nbsp; Margie was a beautician for 40 years, most of the time working in
 her shop in her home. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and sports, 
especially watching KU basketball.&nbsp; Margie was a member of the Christian
 Church in Stockton for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, and a grandson Leon LeSage.

Survivors include her daughter, Sherry 
(Mike) Muir of Hays, KS; stepson Larry LeSage, three granddaughters, 
Stacie (David) Jackson, Amy Muir, and Pamela (Scott) Sprague, and three 
great-grandchildren.

Margie Marie LeSage

Carolyn M. Barr, 79, passed away Sunday Jan. 31, 2021, at Country 
Place Memory Care, in Hoisington. She was born Jan. 3, 1942, in 
Pratt, the daughter of Arthur and Merle (Hollopeter) Jones. She was 
united in marriage to Gary Barr May 30, 1979 in Hoisington.

Carolyn has been a resident of Hoisington since 1979, coming from 
LaCrosse. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Great
 Bend. She was a Sunday school teacher and worked with missionaries. She
 was a member of the Kansas Appaloosa Horse Association and 4-H. Carolyn
 enjoyed showing horses, sewing, baking, and doing crossword puzzles. 
She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include; her husband Gary of the home; children James Brehm
 and wife Deborah of Perry, Desda Brehm of South Carolina, Steven Barr 
and wife Debbie of Cimarron, David Barr and wife Patricia of Wichita, 
Kevin Barr and wife Susan of Minco, Oklahoma, Brad Barr of Hutchinson, 
Kimberly Schneweis and husband Eugene of Hoisington, and Pamela Douglas 
of Houston, Texas; sister, Margaret Hilt of Pratt; twenty-five 
grandchildren including; Michele Berends, Heather Helvie, Alesia 
Schneweis, Jameson, Jenna, and Brandi Brehm, Lezzus Rogers&nbsp; and 
thirty-five great grandchildren including; Matthew, Isabelle, and Isaiah
 Mayers, Izaiah Flowers, Chole and Chance McCain. She was preceded in 
death by her parents, an infant daughter, grandson, Jace Richardson, 
sister, Sharon Jones and brother-in-law, Ivan Hilt.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial

Virgil Allen Scott, 93, of Sharon Springs, Kansas, passed away at the Wallace County Community Care Center on January 27, 2021. Allen was born on March 30, 1927, to Roland and Erma (Walters) Scott on the family farm 6 miles south of Wallace in Wallace County, Kansas. He was the youngest of 3 sons, following brothers Roland Jr. and Roy. Allen attended grade school at Prairie View, a one room country school, high school at Wallace High School until it closed in 1943, then graduated from the Wallace County Community High School in Sharon Springs in 1945. In March of 1945, he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. Allen returned to Wallace County and the farm following his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946. In the early 1950s, he attained his private pilot license.&nbsp;

On January 2, 1953, Allen married Berna (Cox) Scott at the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church. They took over the family farm in Wallace County where they raised their loving family. Allen and Berna were blessed with three children; Paula, Virgil Jr. and Lisa. Faith, family and the community were important to Allen. He was a member of the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church and was active in Dover Grange, Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge. Allen and Berna loved to travel together and they saw much of the country during their 68 years of marriage. A few favorite trips were attending the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Speedway and visiting Chicago to celebrate their 50th&nbsp;wedding anniversary.&nbsp;

Allen was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, his daughter Lisa Scott, daughter-in-law Trish Davies and son-in-law Joe Korbe. Allen is survived by his wife, Berna, Sharon Springs, daughter, Paula Korbe, Garden City; son Virgil and wife Diane, Broomfield, CO; six grandchildren, Stephanie Stroud, her husband Brad, Lenexa, KS; Travis Korbe, Wallace, KS; Christopher Korbe, his wife Sarah, Spearville, KS; Andrew Korbe, his wife Hailey, Garden City, KS; Caiti Korbe, Garden City, KS; Nicole Scott, Broomfield, CO; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Saturday, February 6, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. at the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church, 520 6th&nbsp;Street. Virgil Allen Scott

Marg Byerley passed away in peace on February 1, 2021 in Mission, KS 
at the age of 87. Marg was born to Conrad and Florence Schumacher on 
June 15, 1933 in Catherine Township, KS. She graduated from Hays High in
 1951. Marg married Thomas James Byerley at St. Joseph Catholic Church 
in Hays, KS on December 29, 1951. They enjoyed 54 years of marriage. Tom
 preceded Marg in death passing on June 27, 2006.  Tom and Marg moved to
 Kansas City in 1957 and to Mission in 1959. They were members of St. 
Pius X Catholic Church in Mission. Marg worked for the dental practice 
of Bruce Evans, DDS located in Fairway, KS for 25 years.

In retirement, Marg and Tom enjoyed a love of
 travel. They traveled to Europe, Mexico, Canada  and throughout the 
country including driving all the way from Kansas to Alaska, not once 
but twice. For many years, during the late summer, they traveled to 
Canada to fish with friends. Marg and Tom were avid dancers and belonged
 to the Merry Mixers Square Dance Club.  

Marg is survived by her sister Linda K. 
Staupp of Liberty Lake, WA, brother-in-law Marvin L. Byerley and his 
wife Billie of Kansas City, KS and sister-in-law Maria Byerley of 
Hinesville, GA. 

The most important part of Marg’s life was 
her family. She is survived by her five children: Deborah A. Byers of 
Prairie Village, KS, Douglas J. Byerley and wife Laurie of Roeland Park,
 KS, Duane T. Byerley and wife Sandra of Mission, KS, Dennis M. Byerley 
and wife Donna of Winchester, KS, and David C. Byerley and wife Michelle
 of Overland Park, KS.
 
Marg was blessed with 13 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and many
 other loving nieces, nephews and cousins. It was her love of family and
 her strong faith that gave her the courage to persevere through the 
loss of her dear husband, Tom, and health issues later in her life. 

In accordance with guidance from the Johnson 
County Department of Health and Environment there will not be a 
community celebration of Marg’s life. Her service will be limited to 
immediate family members only. Condolences may be left for the family at

 1951. Marg married Thomas James Byerley at St. Joseph Catholic Church 
in Hays, KS on December 29, 1951. They enjoyed 54 years of marriage. Tom
 preceded Marg in death passing on June 27, 2006. Tom and Marg moved to
 Kansas City in 1957 and to Mission in 1959. They were members of St. 
Pius X Catholic Church in Mission. Marg worked for the dental practice 
of Bruce Evans, DDS located in Fairway, KS for 25 years.In retirement, Marg and Tom enjoyed a love of
 travel. They traveled to Europe, Mexico, Canada and throughout the 
country including driving all the way from Kansas to Alaska, not once 
but twice. For many years, during the late summer, they traveled to 
Canada to fish with friends. Marg and Tom were avid dancers and belonged
 to the Merry Mixers Square Dance Club. Marg is survived by her sister Linda K. 
Staupp of Liberty Lake, WA, brother-in-law Marvin L. Byerley and his 
wife Billie of Kansas City, KS and sister-in-law Maria Byerley of 
Hinesville, GA. The most important part of Marg’s life was 
her family. She is survived by her five children: Deborah A. Byers of 
Prairie Village, KS, Douglas J. Byerley and wife Laurie of Roeland Park,
 KS, Duane T. Byerley and wife Sandra of Mission, KS, Dennis M. Byerley 
and wife Donna of Winchester, KS, and David C. Byerley and wife Michelle
 of Overland Park, KS.
 
Marg was blessed with 13 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and many
 other loving nieces, nephews and cousins. It was her love of family and
 her strong faith that gave her the courage to persevere through the 
loss of her dear husband, Tom, and health issues later in her life. In accordance with guidance from the Johnson 
County Department of Health and Environment there will not be a 
community celebration of Marg’s life. Her service will be limited to 
immediate family members only. Condolences may be left for the family at

Marguerite 'Marg' Rose (Schumacher) Byerley

Dean R. Fairchild, age 89, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2021, 
at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on 
September 6, 1931, in Scott City, Kansas, the firstborn of twin sons to 
H.R. and Laura Greenlee Fairchild.&nbsp; He attended school in Scott City, 
Kansas, graduating from SCHS in 1949.

Dean joined the US Air Force in 1951 and was trained as an aircraft 
mechanic.&nbsp; He served his country in Texas, Idaho, Colorado, and France 
from 1951 to 1954.

He entered Fort Hays State University in September 1955 earning a BA 
degree in History and a Master of Science in History in 1970.&nbsp; Dean 
began his teaching career at Plymell School, Plymell, Kansas and taught 
from 1960-1961.&nbsp; In August of 1962, he began a 30-year career, teaching 
History at Scott City High School.

In the spring of 1962, Dean married Sandra Wenderott in Scott City, 
Kansas.&nbsp; On May 27, 1972, Dean married Patricia “Pat” Ford in Scott 
City, Kansas.

In 1993 after one year of retirement, Dean and Pat moved to 
Gardnerville, Nevada.&nbsp; In 2003 they relocated to Shell Knob, Missouri 
where they lived for nine years.

In 2011 they moved to Nevada, Iowa, before returning to Scott City in May of 2012.

Dean enjoyed traveling in the RV, camping, wood carving, searching 
for Indian artifacts, reading nonfiction history, ballroom dancing, 
bowling, watching sports on tv, and watching the Scott City Beavers in 
action.

Dean is survived by One Daughter - Ragan &amp; Andrew Bonsi of 
Mission, Kansas, One Son - Brent &amp; Angie Fairchild of Hutchinson, 
Kansas, One Step-Son - Jeff &amp; Kellie Ford of Rathdrum, Idaho, Eleven
 Grandchildren, Twelve Great Grandchildren and close personal friends 
and caretakers - Nancy &amp; Scott Holt of Scott City, Kansas.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 
2021, at Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas with Rev.

Stacy Carl Olson II, 71, passed away January 31, 2021, at The University of Kansas Health System HaysMed Campus, Hays, KS.

He was born October 21, 1949, in Dodge City, the son of Carl W. and 
Velma C. Anderson Olson.&nbsp; A lifetime area resident, he was a banker and 
financial advisor at Farmers State Bank, Jetmore, where he served as 
past president as well as the board.

He was a member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Lions Club 
member since 1973, serving in all capacities, was the Jetmore Mayor for 
sixteen years, Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader, Cemetery Board, Sons Of 
The American Legion and was one of the first EMT and EMT I’s for 
Hodgeman County. Stacy graduated from Hodgeman County High School in 
1968, Fort Hays State University, with a BS in business in 1974 and The 
University of Colorado, School of Banking in 1977.&nbsp; Stacy loved to play 
slow-pitch and he even had a team when he was in college.&nbsp; He also 
enjoyed meeting with friends in the morning at the local coffee shop and
 visiting.&nbsp; Stacy supported all the activities his children and 
grandchildren participated in and enjoyed watching them succeed. He 
loved his family and his family loved him.

On June 1, 1974, he married Marla F. Tracy in Phillipsburg, Ks. &nbsp;She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Derek (Katie) Olson, Jetmore; two 
daughters, Carla Lowry and Connie Olson, both of Jetmore; five 
grandchildren, Zoe Lowry, Sophie Lowry, Caroline Olson, Shelby Olson and
 Austin Olson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Norman Olson.

February 5, 2021 at the Fairmount Cemetery with Father John Forkuoh

Carol Dianne Pfannenstiel, 75, of Great Bend passed away peacefully 
on Monday, February 1, 2021, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; She
 was born July 10, 1945, in Great Bend, KS, to William and Doris 
(Siefkes) Jordan. She married Herbert “Herb” J. Pfannenstiel September 
26, 1964, at Great Bend, KS. &nbsp;

Dianne graduated from Great Bend High School in 1963. She worked in 
the banking industry for over 40 years.&nbsp; Her love for animals developed 
at a young age and her passion continued well into adulthood.&nbsp; She 
worked a part time job at Ark Valley Veterinary Clinic for over 20 
years.&nbsp; After retiring in 2011, the family raised and raced greyhound 
dogs until 2017.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband, Herbert “Herb” J. Pfannenstiel; two 
sons, Shawn (Dawn) Pfannenstiel of Broken Arrow, OK, and Mark (Tambria) 
Pfannenstiel of Wichita; six grandchildren, Crae, Chloe, Brooklyn, 
Taylor, Gavin and Trent; and one sister, Karen Kaul of St. Louis, MO. 
She was preceded in death by her parents.

The visitation is scheduled from 2:00-9:00 PM on Thursday, February 
4, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, located at 1425 S. Patton Rd.&nbsp; An Altar

Arlene Ruth Schamaun, 89, passed away February 2, 2021, at Hays 
Medical Center. She was born July 21, 1931, at Bazine to George &amp; 
Eva (Hettinger) Strecker. She married Loren Dale Schamaun April 29, 
1951, at Bazine.

Coming from San Diego, Calif. in 1963, Arlene was a Great Bend 
resident. She co-owned the Ralph Wallace Buffet in Great Bend for 15 
years and then worked for Rowland's Gift Store for 21 years.&nbsp; She then 
spent many years volunteering for many different organizations in Great 
Bend. Arlene enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and was very talented. 
She especially loved being with her family.&nbsp;She was a member of First 
Christian Church.

Survivors include, her husband, Loren Schamaun of the home; a son, 
Steven Schamaun and wife Sheryl, and a daughter, Marsha Gerstner, all of
 Great Bend; a sister, Rachel Stieben of La Crosse; five grandchildren, 
Emily Gerstner and companion Mike Jobe, Matthew Gerstner and wife 
Danielle, Adam Gerstner and wife Hillary, Zachary Schamaun and wife 
Lauren, and Nicholas Schamaun and companion Valerie McAtee; and seven 
great grandchildren, Audrey Schamaun, Rowan Schamaun, Sylvie Schamaun, 
Jackson Gerstner, Koby Gerstner, Collins Gerstner, and Keely Gerstner. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lawrence

Dwayne Edward Meier, 68, passed away January 30, 2021, at his home in
 Salina. He was born June 28, 1952, in Great Bend to Harold and Margaret
 (Hoffman) Meier.&nbsp; Dwayne married Melva (Bachofer) July 21, 1982, in 
Forsyth, Mo.&nbsp;

A long-time resident of Salina moving from the Claflin area, Dwayne 
was a 47 year draftsman engineer for Coperion K-tron.&nbsp; He was baptized 
in the Catholic Church and enjoyed skeet shooting competitions and 
music, especially being accomplished in guitar, fiddle and steel guitar.

Survivors include two sisters, Jean McAtee and husband Terry of 
Pratt, and Darlene Feist and Angel Reyes of Northglenn, Col.; three 
nieces, Jena, Liz and Linda; three nephews, Travis, Trent and Adam; four
 great nieces, Keyton, Eva, Madi and Millie; seven great nephews, Reed, 
Gage, Chance, Cason, Marcus, Grant and Landon; one great great niece, 
Haven; and two great great nephews, Trace and Maze.&nbsp; He was preceded in 
passing by his wife Melva.

Dwayne Edward Meier

Julia Weber, age 59, of Hays, Kansas died Monday, February 1, 2021, at her home.

She was born June 7, 1961, at Houston, Texas, to Dr. Joseph Balthaser OD and Margaret Ann (Burton) Brungardt.&nbsp; She married Mitchell Weber on April 17, 1982, in Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; Her and Mitch recently celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary with their family surrounding them.

She managed her husband’s Weber Photography business he started in 1980 for 20 plus years as well as sub teaching for USD 489 and surrounding towns.&nbsp; She attended Fort Hays State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education in May of 1984.&nbsp; She grew up in Victoria, and was 1979 graduate of Victoria High School.&nbsp;

She enjoyed the flexibility of being able to be home as much as possible while her children were young and take on extra jobs when she could. After her older children were grown and out of the house, she accepted a teaching position at St. Mary’s Catholic grade school in Ellis, KS in 2005. Shortly after she started working, she was diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease that primarily affected her lungs (CREST syndrome). Julie finished out that year teaching, and quickly became homebound as she needed oxygen 24/7.

Her prognosis was not good and agreed to have chemotherapy treatments which she finished in 2007.&nbsp; She found joy watching her four oldest children marry and babysitting her three grandsons. When her second grandson, Kayden, was diagnosed with liver cancer as a toddler, she begged for God’s mercy to save him, and he received a miracle beating the cancer. She was the biggest prayer warrior and prayed for many people close and distant. She was a member of Christian Mothers and Perpetual Adoration for 28 years. Julie was an enduring advocate for the Pro-Life movement, and attending many marches and rallies.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church for 39 years. The last few years of her home-bound life, she enjoyed visits from her family, baking, praying, and watching old westerns.

Thomas James Dreiling

Our sweet, beautiful mother, Mary, passed away Thursday, January 28, 
2021, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook, Kansas. 
Mary was born of Volga German descent in Hays, Kansas, the oldest of 
five children, to Joe and Sophie Scheutz Gerstner on October 28, 1925. 
She married her beloved husband, Harold P. Schmidt, in 1949 and together
 they raised a family of five children in Topeka, Kansas. They were 
married 63 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, 
Harold; her mother and father; two brothers, Dennis and Leroy Gerstner; 
and her dear daughter-in-law, Joy Schmidt. Mary is survived by
 her five children, Debbie (Jim Wasko), Paul (Joy Schmidt, deceased), 
Bruce (Brenda), Jason and Rodney; as well as seven grandchildren, 
Nathaniel (Nicole), Simon, Philip, Madalyn (Jayant Chandhary) and 
Joseph, Anna (companion, Jared Petefish) and Sara (Jake Machnov). Other 
survivors include her sister, Lillian Rohr and brother, Jim Gerstner. 
She was well loved and will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, 
friends, neighbors and former colleagues. Mom began her long 
work career devoted to helping children stricken with the polio virus. 
Her stories conveyed to us the love she poured into helping these 
children walk again. She worked relentlessly using the world famous, 
Sister Kenny treatments, involving long massages and warm baths. 
 Mom was smart and creative. She devised her own method of shorthand to 
land a good job at the Walker Army Airbase, 58th Bombing Wing, as a 
clerk, ordering parts for the B-29 through the Pentagon. He sales 
ability was outstanding. She was the often sought after clothing and 
bridal consultant for JC Penney for many years. Mary always 
found time for her husband, five children, seven grandchildren and 
activities involving church, school or volunteering. She stayed active 
in the news and loved politics and read voraciously. Her love for 
veterans lead her to a volunteer librarian position at the VA Hospital. 
She loved the arts, attending many theatrical productions, ballets and 
musicals. Mom was fun, rarely turning down a trip to the casino with 
Joy. She traveled extensively with family and was a skilled seamstress 
and painter. Her smile was big and her blue eyes sparkled. She was 
strong but soft in heart. Most of all Mom loved her family. 
She instilled in each of us strong values, good education and our faith.
 She was an excellent cook and a master of Volga German cooking, always 
stressing the importance of our Saturday night meals together. 
 Mom loved her church, Most Pure Heart of Mary, where she and our father
 were original founding members. Mass of Christian Burial will be 
Tuesday, February 9, at 10 a.m. at the Church. Prior to that, visitation
 will be from 9 to 9:30 followed by praying the rosary at 9:30, all at 
the Church. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. 
 We thank our brother, Jason, for taking care of Mom so lovingly so she 
could remain in her home. We thank Paul for his constant show of love, 
visiting Mom daily and bringing Holy Communion to her at Brookside. 
 Our family deeply appreciates the love, friendship and beautiful care 
she embraced at Brookside. We are deeply grateful to Brookside Hospice 
who cared for Mom with such compassion to the end. Mom had deep 
spiritual faith; we rejoice knowing she had no fear but the greatest 
anticipation of God’s beautiful promise. We celebrate this and it gives

Martina Werth, 92, Hays, died Sunday, January 31, 2021 at home surrounded by her family.

She was born April 7, 1928 in Hays the 
daughter of August and Anna (Braun) Spies.&nbsp; On August 19, 1946 she was 
united in marriage to Ralph J. Werth and they celebrated 44 years of 
marriage before he preceded her in death on July 14, 1991.&nbsp; She was a 
homemaker, a cook at Sacred Heart School in Ness City and Kennedy Middle
 School, a daycare provider and nanny for doctors’ children, and ironed 
clothes for doctors and lawyers.&nbsp; Her memberships included St. Nicholas 
of Myra Catholic Church and St. Nicholas of Myra Christian Mothers.&nbsp; 
Martina loved to embroider, was a wonderful seamstress, a meticulous 
house cleaner, and enjoyed playing Bingo, slot machines at casinos, and 
Pinochle with her family.&nbsp; She also enjoyed singing, gardening, being 
outdoors, canning, cooking, and baking.&nbsp; Martina was a difference maker 
who built her life on simplicity, commitment to the Lord, and her 
family.&nbsp;

Survivors include six sons: Vincent 
Werth, Sr. and wife Helen of Munjor, Stephen Werth and wife Joyce of 
Schoenchen, Bernie Werth and wife Lona, Andy Werth, and Loran Werth and

Regina L. Wallace

Linda
 J. Palmquist, 78, of Concordia, KS died on February 1 at Leonardville 
Nursing Home in Leonardville, KS. Born Linda Jean Basso on December 10, 
1942, in Kansas City, MO, she was the youngest child of Andrew and Olive
 “Maxine” Basso. Linda graduated from Westport High School in Kansas 
City, MO. She later received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a 
concentration in Pre-Art Therapy from Kansas State University (1987) and
 a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design (1997) from Fort Hays State 
University.

On
 July 10, 1963, Linda married Richard Palmquist. They have two children 
Tim (Maureen) Palmquist of Portland, OR and Tammy (Kevin) Mitchell, of 
Kenilworth, IL. Linda farmed with Richard for 30 years in rural 
Concordia and they celebrated over 55 years of marriage. She was a 4-H 
leader, teaching photography and sewing, and active in The Baptist 
Church.

After
 raising two children, Linda returned to college to earn two degrees and
 began teaching graphic design at Cloud County Community College. In 
1999, she became the Director/Curator of the Cloud Country Historical 
Museum, a role she held until she retired to spend more time with her 
grandchildren.

Linda
 was a talented artist, life-long learner, and she enjoyed experimenting
 with many creative endeavors. She was passionate about sharing art with
 others. Linda gave inspirational ‘chalk-talks’ at area churches where 
she would draw on an easel during her presentation, and use a special 
light to reveal a second hidden art sketch at the end of the program. 
She was known for creating spectacular birthday cakes for friends and 
family, as well as baking and decorating cut out sugar cookies at the 
holidays. Her cookie cutter collection grew to 500 at one point.

She
 was preceded in death by her parents. Linda is survived by her husband,
 Richard, her brother Ray (Yoko) Basso of Raytown, MO, her two children 
and their spouses, four grandchildren Brett (Chau) Palmquist of 
Westminster, CA, Chad Palmquist of Des Moines, IA, Megan Palmquist of 
Tigard, OR, and Lauren (Thanh) Orr, of Gardner, KS; as well as eight 
great-grandchildren Rocco, Brett, Isabella, Rhys, Kade, Harrison, 
Charlie, and Abigail.

The
 family has chosen cremation. A private inurnment is planned. A 
Celebration of Remembrance will be held at a later date when it is safe 
to gather. Details will be forthcoming.
