Esther L. Ruder, 94, Hays, died Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Gove County Medical Center Long Term Care.

She was born October 24, 1926 in 
Munjor, the daughter of Lawrence and Katherine (Doerfler) Rohr.&nbsp; On 
November 4, 1946 she was united in marriage to Edwin R. Ruder in Hays, 
and they celebrated 34 years of marriage before he preceded her in death
 on July 7, 1981.&nbsp; Esther worked at Travenol for ten years.&nbsp; Her 
memberships include St. Joseph Catholic Church and the VFW Post #9076 
Auxiliary.&nbsp; She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and 
wordsearches, researching family genealogy, and was an avid Kansas City 
Royals fan.&nbsp; She loved her family, having her grandchildren at her home,
 and sharing her love of cooking, baking cookies, and embroidering tea 
towels with them.

Survivors include two sons: Clifford 
Ruder and wife Irene of Guam and Harvey Ruder and wife Roxie of Corpus 
Christi, TX, a daughter: Joyce Adams and husband Rocky of Quinter, two 
brothers: Floyd Rohr and wife Margie of Hays and Walter Rohr of Florida,
 a sister: Ruth Pfeifer of Hays, 13 grandchildren, 35 great 
grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and 
nephews.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, her husband: Edwin, a son: David Ruder, a daughter: Sharon 
Nelson, five brothers: Elmer, Bert, Vern, Fr. Vincent, and Leroy Rohr, a
 sister: Minnie Zimmerman, a grandson: Clayton Ruder, and a great 
granddaughter: Alexandra Thimesch.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 
with Fr. Matthew Cowan officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St. Joseph 
Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday and 
from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel 
Funeral Home.&nbsp; A vigil service will be at 6:30 pm followed by a VFW 
Auxiliary Rosary at 7:00 pm, both on Tuesday at the funeral home.&nbsp; 


Memorials are suggested to TMP-Marian Endowment Foundation or to The

Sheila M. Oeser, 78, died April 10, 2021, at Azria Heatlh of Great 
Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born March 24, 1943, in Great Bend, Kansas, the 
daughter of Kasper J. and Margaret (Darcey) Heinz.

On December 29, 1962, she 
married Alan Kent Oeser in Claflin, Kansas. He preceded her in death on 
February 27, 2020.

A lifetime Claflin resident, Sheila was a much loved teacher, 
teaching for over 40 years.&nbsp; She started teaching in Lenexa, Kansas, but
 soon moved back home to Claflin where she taught for five years at the 
Immaculate Conception Parochial School and then from 1972 to 1999 
teaching Kindergarten, First Grade and Elementary Music at Claflin 
Public School.&nbsp;

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Altar Society.&nbsp;

She is survived by three children; daughter, Allison Layne of Kiefer,
 Oklahoma; sons, Phillip Oeser and Jon Oeser and wife Jane, all of 
Claflin; daughter-in-law, Debbie Oeser of Claflin; sister, Camille Haro 
and husband David of Sun City, Florida; seven grandchildren, Jordan 
Keenan &amp; wife Nicole, Chandler Keenan, Bethany White and husband 
Seth, Taylor Oeser, Lawson Oeser, Lexi Oeser, and Lauren Oeser; three 
step grandchildren, Kristi Nixon, Kari VanPelt and husband Dae, and 
Kylie Crawford and husband Rick; one great grandchild, Easton Keenan; 
and eleven step-great grandchildren, Kaleb, Kassidy, and Kambree Nixon, 
Deagan , Jayln, Camryn, and Ian VanPelt, Kylie Marie, Ellie Mae, Kobe, 
and Rilynn Crawford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a son, Christopher Alan Oeser.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday all at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Tom Kelley passed away March 31, 2021, at Aldersgate Village surrounded by his family.  He was born on November 2, 1944, to Donald and Evelyne Kelley in Topeka, Kansas. 

 Tom graduated from Washburn University in 1966 and Magna Cum Laude from Washburn Law School in 1969.  He practiced law in Western Kansas and Topeka. 

 Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Amy, his children Jodie Soldan and husband Alan, Rob Kelley, Jill Kelley and husband, Mike Wilson; granddaughter Abby Phillips and husband Zack; brother, Michael Kelley and daughter Dana, sister Patsy Capuano and family and his beloved furry companion, JJ.

Norma J. Blake, 86, passed away April 9, 2021 at The University of Kansas Health Systems, Pawnee Valley Campus, Larned.

She was born December 8, 1934 in Larned; the daughter of Harold and 
Lois Balman Arnold.&nbsp; A lifetime area resident; she was a farm wife.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Rozel, the American 
Baptist Women, enjoyed helping her daughter Debra with preschool, 
vacation bible school and being a Sunday school teacher.

On July 21, 1953 she married G. Leonard Blake in Rozel.&nbsp; He survives.

Other survivors include; three sons, Dennis (Nancy) Blake, Hazelton, 
Randal (Julia) Blake, Larned, Jerel (Robert) Blake, Lenexa; a daughter, 
Debra (Ritch) Foos, Rozel; eleven grandchildren and 24 great 
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Knudson and Wilma Smith.

Funeral will be 10:00 a.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel with 
Grandson Pastor Travis Blake presiding.&nbsp; Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to
 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary with family present from 6-8 p.m.&nbsp;

Bruce E. McIntyre, 82, joined the love of his life, Margarett, on 
Friday, April 9, 2021. He was born November 21, 1938 in Avon, South 
Dakota, the son of Walter &amp; Florence (Nieuwenhuis) McIntyre. 
 On October 12, 1957, he married Margarett E. Knouse in Scott City, 
Kansas. After living in various places, Bruce and Margarett returned to
 Garden City in the late 1980’s. They have lived in Garden City since. 
 Bruce worked most of his life in the drilling business and was the 
owner and operator of M&amp; W Drilling Co. He and his family also 
owned and operated the Continental Inn in Garden City. 
 He was a proud member of the Patriot Guard. He loved to spend his 
time in the outdoors and was a big motorcycle enthusiast. He also loved
 RC cars, racing, traveling, fishing, model airplances, volunteering his
 time helping people especially children. Most of all, Bruce loved to 
attend his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s activities. 
 Survivors include his children Kimberly (Jose) Garcia of Garden 
City, Kevin (Tami) McIntyre of Amarillo, Texas, and Kerri (Richard A.) 
Sperry of Garden City; twelve grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 
his siblings Luella Smith of Colby, Kansas, Clayton McIntyre of Salt 
Lake City, Utah, Raeburn Drake of Fallbrook, California, Sandra Donlon 
of Pueblo, Colorado, Marilyn Wheeler of Branson, Missouri, Roxie Berning
 of Augusta, Kansas, and Relda Everett of Evergreen, Colorado; and his 
sisters-in-law Kit (Kenny) Green of Garden City, and Annie Mather of 
Meade, Kansas. 
 Bruce is preceded in death by his wife Margarett who died on March 
12, 2020. He is also preceded in death by his parents and two 
granddaughters. 
 Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 
2021 at Turning Point Church of the Nazarene in Garden City with Rev.

Greg Lynn Long, 62, of Oberlin, KS passed away April 8, 2021 in Kearney 
Regional Medical Center. He was born July 20, 1958 in Oberlin, KS to 
Elden and Marilou (Berndt) Long.
 Greg grew up on the family farm in Oberlin and was a 1976 Graduate 
of Decatur Community High School. He then went on to receive an 
Associate’s of Science Degree from Colby Community College and then went
 to work on the family farm. Greg married Mary Erickson June 15, 1985 at
 the Oberlin United Methodist Church. He was a former Faith Lutheran 
Church Council President and Fair Board President. He enjoyed oil 
exploration, listening to music, loudly, and cruising the countryside. 
Greg loved spending time with his family and thoroughly enjoyed the 
relationships he had with his friends.
 Greg was preceded in death by his parents and infant son Geoffrey 
Miles. He is survived by his wife, Mary of the home; son, Ethan 
(Danielle) Long of Oberlin; daughter, Jenna (Spencer Moore) Long of 
Colby; brother, Brad (Shanna) Long Oberlin; Linda (Brad) Wade of 
Oberlin, and grandchildren: Ayden, Emalee, and Jeffery Long.

Greg Lynn Long

Louella Barbara (Appelhans) Zerr went to join the Lord on April 8th, 
2021 at Prairie Senior Living Center in Colby, Ks. at the age of 86. 
Louella was born to Joe and Katherine (Richmeier) Appelhans on June 7, 
1934. Lou grew up on a farm Northeast of St. Peter, Ks. She met Steve 
Zerr in 1952 and they married on November 3, 1953 in St. Peter. To this
 union, 3 children were born, Steve Jr., Maxine and Karen. 
 Lou was a homemaker, cleaned houses, and later a nurse’s aide until 
1971 when she attended Colby Community College and got her GED. She 
continued her education at CCC in the LPN Nursing Program. She received
 her diploma on August 22, 1973. She worked at the Long Term Care 
Facility in Hoxie until her retirement in 2000.
 Lou had many interests and kept busy with them. She loved dancing, 
meeting new people, crafts, playing cards and was a vicious Wahoo Board 
player. She was known for her delicious German cooking and always had 
extra people around her table to feed. She was a member of the 
Sunflower Polka Club, St. Frances Sodality and Wheatland Ladies VFW 
Auxiliary #2864 in Grinnell, Ks.

Jason Zerr; sisters, Eleanor, Mary, Sister Gilberta and Clara; 
brothers, Alfred, Edwin, Kenneth and Ralph; and sons-in-law, Brad 
Rondeau and Tom Jones.
 She is survived by sister, Rosie Heier; children, Steve Zerr, Jr. 
(Lucy) of Levant, Maxine Adams of Colby and Karen Adams (Dick) of Colby;
 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. 
Many nieces and nephews, 4 sisters-in-law and many special people who 
called her Mom.
 Visitation is at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie, starting at 
1:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 13, 2021. The family will greet visitors from

2021 at Prairie Senior Living Center in Colby, Ks. at the age of 86. 
Louella was born to Joe and Katherine (Richmeier) Appelhans on June 7, 
1934. Lou grew up on a farm Northeast of St. Peter, Ks. She met Steve 
Zerr in 1952 and they married on November 3, 1953 in St. Peter. To this
 union, 3 children were born, Steve Jr., Maxine and Karen. 
 Lou was a homemaker, cleaned houses, and later a nurse’s aide until 
1971 when she attended Colby Community College and got her GED. She 
continued her education at CCC in the LPN Nursing Program. She received
 her diploma on August 22, 1973. She worked at the Long Term Care 
Facility in Hoxie until her retirement in 2000.
 Lou had many interests and kept busy with them. She loved dancing, 
meeting new people, crafts, playing cards and was a vicious Wahoo Board 
player. She was known for her delicious German cooking and always had 
extra people around her table to feed. She was a member of the 
Sunflower Polka Club, St. Frances Sodality and Wheatland Ladies VFW 
Auxiliary #2864 in Grinnell, Ks.

Bob was a native of Lucas, Kansas and a graduate of Lucas High School
 Class of 1966.&nbsp; He attended Kansas Wesleyan University on a football 
scholarship.&nbsp; He played football his freshman year.&nbsp; He later attended 
Fort Hayes State University, then left school to work on the family 
wheat and dairy farm.&nbsp; He farmed and milked cows until his retirement in
 2010.&nbsp; In 2012 he and his family moved to Jennings, Louisiana.

He loved to work in his garden, to fish and watch sports.&nbsp; After he 
retired, he worked part time at Heartland Hay, a pet food plant that his
 wife Mary managed.&nbsp; Bob was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the 
Lucas United Methodist Church.

Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Kimball Naegele of Jennings, one 
sister Carol Naegele Weeks of Cawker City, Kansas, one brother, Kent 
Naegele of Lucas, Kansas, one grandson, Cade Murphy of Jennings, 
Louisiana and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Margaret 
(Gilbreath) Naegele, a son, Audie Murphy and a daughter, Ashlye Murphy.

Alfred Alfonse &nbsp;“Al” Hammersmith, age 
78, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 10, 2021, at Via Christi 
Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born June 28, 1942, in 
Russell, Kansas to Alfonse and Silverina I. (Quint) Hammersmith.&nbsp; He 
married Mary Ellen (Hammerschmidt) on August 25, 1966, at Russell, 
Kansas.&nbsp;

He owned and operated H &amp; B 
Petroleum of Hutchinson since 1997, and he has always worked in the oil 
fields.&nbsp; He and Mary made their home in Ellinwood, Kansas for about 30 
years, they also lived in Plainville, Ness City, and Hutchinson.&nbsp; He 
grew up in&nbsp; Gorham and was a 1960 graduate of Gorham High School.&nbsp; He 
served three years in the U.S. Army, a member of 3rd and 4th Degree 
Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Church of the Holy Cross of 
Hutchinson.

He donated to many organizations 
locally and across the globe.&nbsp; He had a real passion for supporting 
Catholic education, especially schools that his grandkids attended.&nbsp; He 
enjoyed life to the fullest.&nbsp; He loved to camp and fish, play golf, 
going to the casino, spending time with friends and family, and cheering
 on the Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals.

Above all, his real passion in 
life was his faith, family and work. He was a devoted husband, Dad and 
Grandpa.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was proud of his Volga German heritage.&nbsp; He was a model for
 the importance of prayer, faith and hard work in one’s life.&nbsp; He always
 cherished the times when his family could spend time together.&nbsp; 
Finally, you could always count on him supporting his kids and grandkids
 as he traveled many miles to watch the many activities they 
participated in. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Mary

Shirley Faye Mort passed away early Sunday morning, April 4, 2021, at the
 Graham County Hospital, Hill City with her family by her side.
 Shirley was born along with her twin sister, Sharon, January 9, 1947,&nbsp; to Audry Emmett and Nina Alice (Bethel) Elliott in Hays. She grew up in
 Bogue, and graduated from the Bogue High School in 1965. On December 
23, 1965, Shirley married Monte M. Mort.
 In 1975, Monte and Shirley moved to the Mt. Shasta area of Northern 
California where she resided until May 2017, when she moved back to Hill
 City to be closer to her family. 
 Shirley is survived by son: Troy (Elizabeth) Mort of Hill City; 
daughters: Tia (Kelly) Nichols of Redding, California and Tana (Kenny 
Bonner) of Redding, California; siblings: Sharon (Sherman) Jones of 
Bogue, Shelby (Connie) Elliott of Spring Hill, Missouri, “Red” (Lorna) 
Elliott of Hill City, and many nieces and nephews.
 She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Monte, and infant daughter Paula Dee.

Scott City, Kansas on Wednesday, April 7, 2021.&nbsp; He was born on April 
26, 1949 in Satevo, Chihuahua, Mexico,&nbsp; the son of Atanacio Armendariz 
and Dolores Fierro.&nbsp; He was a resident of Scott City, Kansas since 2009 
moving from Greeley, Colorado and was retired.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On December 31, 1977 he married Bertha Ruiz Lozano in Cieneguilla Municipio de Satevo, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Survivors include his Wife - Bertha Ruiz of Scott City, Kansas, One 
Daughter&nbsp; -&nbsp; Luz Armendariz of Scott City, Kansas, Three Sons&nbsp; -&nbsp; 
Federico Armendariz of Aurora, Colorado, Ricardo Armendariz of 
Chihuahua, Mexico, Roberto Armendariz of Hermosillo, So Mexico, One 
Sister&nbsp; -&nbsp; Maria Armendariz of Chihuahua, Mexico, and Nine

James Peter Johnson, 85, passed away on April 8, 2021, at the Hays 
Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on October 1, 1935, in 
Omaha, Nebraska the son of Edwin and Rose (Cutis) Johnson.

Jim and Nadra met in Omaha through mutual friends while she was going
 to school. They married on October 13, 1957, in Omaha. In 1958, they moved
 to Utica and started farming with her dad. She survives.

Other survivors include his son, Jeff Johnson and his wife, Ramona, 
of Utica; his daughter, Diedra "Dee Dee" McCallum and her husband, Mac, 
of Valley Center; three sisters, Mildred Walenz, Carolyn Jones, both of 
Omaha, and Marilyn Strickland of St. Cloud, Florida; six grandchildren,

Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on October 1, 1935, in 
Omaha, Nebraska the son of Edwin and Rose (Cutis) Johnson.Jim and Nadra met in Omaha through mutual friends while she was going
 to school. They married on October 13, 1957, in Omaha. In 1958, they moved
 to Utica and started farming with her dad. She survives.Other survivors include his son, Jeff Johnson and his wife, Ramona, 
of Utica; his daughter, Diedra "Dee Dee" McCallum and her husband, Mac, 
of Valley Center; three sisters, Mildred Walenz, Carolyn Jones, both of 
Omaha, and Marilyn Strickland of St. Cloud, Florida; six grandchildren,

James Peter Johnson

Anita Sharon Helms, 70, passed away April 10, 2021, at her home in 
Great Bend. She was born June 29, 1950, at Los Angeles, Calif., to Pete 
&amp; Bonnie (Hall) McKenna.

Anita was a retired home care worker. She attended Prince of Peace 
Parish. She enjoyed playing bingo, sewing, baking, and especially loved 
spending time with her family. Anita was a loving mother, grandmother, 
great grandmother, sister and aunt.

Survivors include, two daughters, Deborah Hinds of Great Bend and 
Patricia (Troy) Satterlee of Manhattan; a son, Cody (Mercedes) Helms of 
Great Bend; seven grandchildren, Dalin Hinds, Jordan Becker, Walter 
Helms, Jacob Satterlee, Nikalem Helms, Madison Crawford and Rylan 
Crawford; and three great grandchildren, Wesley Becker, Grayson Becker 
and Persephone Leiker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pete 
and Bonnie McKenna; and a twin sister, Bonita Mead.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial 
service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 1, 2021, at St. Rose of
 Lima Catholic Church, with Father Don Bedore presiding. Inurnment will 
be held at a later date.

Harry Hugh Adams died April 6, 2021, at 95 years of age surrounded by 
loved ones.&nbsp; He was born August 6, 1925, to Ray “Roy” J. and Gladys 
Goldie (McCarty) Adams.&nbsp; His sister and brothers were Gussie “Louise” 
Adams Estabrook, Edwin Birdene “Bud” Adams, Willard Eugene “Gene” Adams,
 Earl Ray “Tex” Adams, John Glenn Adams, Frederick “Merle” Adams, Billie
 LaDon “Don” Adams. All have preceded him in death.

A veteran of World War II, Harry joined the army September 1943 
shortly after his 18th birthday and was assigned as a gunner in Patton's
 80th infantry division.&nbsp; After being wounded by artillery shrapnel 
during the Battle of the Bulge, he recovered and returned to the front 
line.&nbsp; This second assignment ended when his feet froze after a night 
crossing of the Or River on Christmas Eve 1944. He spent the remainder 
of the war recovering in a hospital in Britain.

Harry returned home from the war and on October 11, 1946, he married 
the love of his life, Barbara Beth Bryant.&nbsp; They were married 69 years 
and delighted in their children — and ESPECIALLY delighted in their 9 
grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.&nbsp;
 Each child had their own special relationship with them as did their 
numerous nephews and nieces. He loved his family/ extended family. 
Barbara preceded him in death and he greatly missed her every day.

Harry worked in the oil fields - his work ethic was stellar.&nbsp; His 
vast experience in many different positions/roles, jobs, and locations 
afforded him countless work related friends and acquaintances.&nbsp; He 
finally totally retired at 85 years of age.

Growing tomatoes and other vegetables was one of his great passions.&nbsp;
 He had a huge garden every year, loved hearing about your garden, 
offered advice for your garden failures, celebrated your garden 
successes, and gave away most of what he grew.&nbsp;

Cards and domino playing were spirited affairs. If you were his 
partner in card games, you had better be on your toes and paying 
attention.&nbsp;

He loved to drive and drove all over – especially enjoyed driving 
around the Chase, Kansas areas where he grew up.&nbsp; He taught many 
grandchildren how to drive on country and county roads – way before they
 were of age.&nbsp; During these times he imparted his wisdom and told his 
childhood and oil field work stories to help guide them on their paths 
in life.&nbsp;

After retiring and before covid was an issue, he went to coffee most 
every day.&nbsp; There he connected with new and old friends of various ages 
from all walks of life.&nbsp; Business establishments in surrounding areas 
that he frequented knew his name and greeted him when he walked in the 
door.

Harry had “a thousand” whimsical words, sayings, and songs that would
 make you smile or laugh out loud – that is if you were able to 
understand his “Adams-Language” and keep up with his rapid fire speech.&nbsp;
 He enjoyed working hard (“getting powerful”) and had clever ideas 
(“cowboy tricks” and “franthanies”).&nbsp; If you met him, you’ll never 
forget him.&nbsp;

It would be hard to talk about Harry without mentioning his faith in 
Jesus Christ.&nbsp; He had promised God if he survived the war he would 
attend church and dragged all 4 kids to church every Sunday for many 
years.&nbsp; He read his bible and prayed daily for others.&nbsp; He started his 
prayers with “Dear God, we are grateful for this day.”

Harry was also preceded in death by his grandson Kyle Tomey and 
son-in-law Alex Ybarra.&nbsp; He is survived by his children ~Kent Adams 
(Sharon Ochs) – Hutchinson, Brenda Ybarra – Mound Valley, Lynn Adams 
(Ann) – Bison, and Gale Adams Briscoe (Ron Briscoe) – Wichita.

Visitation for friends and relatives wishing to pay their respects will be Tuesday, April 13th
 from noon to 9 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home (1425 S. Patton Rd.) in 
Great Bend, Kansas with family present from 4-6 p.m.&nbsp; Please wear a 
mask.

Honoring Harry’s wishes, a private burial service will be held for immediate family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to, in care of the 
funeral home, to Chase/Raymond USD 401 School District Alumni

Frederick Allen Wohlcke, 67, died January 3, 2021, at Stormont Vail 
Hospital, Topeka.&nbsp; He was born October 19, 1953, in Pratt, Kansas, the 
son of Andrew and Mary Ellen (Anderson) Wohlcke.&nbsp; Fred graduated from 
Hoisington High School in 1971 and went on to get his degree in 
engineering from Kansas State University.&nbsp;

A lifetime Hoisington resident, Fred worked for over 30 years as a 
civil engineer at Evans, Bierly, Hutchinson &amp; Associates of Great 
Bend.&nbsp; He enjoyed cooking, spending time with his Boston Terrier, Mindy 
and also playing video games and gambling.&nbsp;

He is survived by; his sister, Vicki Wilton and husband Larry of 
Hoisington and his brother, Tom Wohlcke of Hoisington; two nieces, Laura
 Hall of Berthoud, Colorado, and Tina Marchiani of Colorado Springs, 
Colorado; three nephews, Jeff Wohlcke of Manhattan, Kansas, Jarrod 
Wohlcke of Pueblo, Colorado; and Greg Wohlcke of Westminster, Colorado; 
and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Frederick Allen Wohlcke

Dr. Ann Elizabeth Liston, 83, formerly of Hays, died Saturday, March 27, 2021, at Wilson Care and Rehab in Wilson, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born August 6, 1937, and considered Harlan, Iowa, her hometown.

Ann earned her master’s degree from Michigan State University, was a fan of Spartan football and left her collection of American needlework (one of her areas of specific study) to MSU.&nbsp; Ann received her doctorate from Ohio State University.

She joined the faculty at Fort Hays State University in 1968 where she spent her entire career. She was a professor of history, an advisor, and retired as chair of her department.&nbsp; While at FHSU, Ann served on many committees, including the department scholarship committee, and she sponsored Phi Alpha Theta, a history honor society. &nbsp;She supported student involvement in the Ellis County Historical Society and served as curator of history at FHSU’s Sternberg Museum of Natural History.&nbsp;Ann also was a member of the Kansas Humanities Council Speakers Bureau.&nbsp;In the community, she was a Hays Public Library board member, an active participant in Friends of the Library, and encouraged library music programs. &nbsp; Ann was a member of the Hays Medical Center Auxiliary.&nbsp;She also led book discussions, part of the Talk About Literature in Kansas program of the humanities council.

Ann was an avid fan of jazz and other forms of music and, according to the musicians she knew, a great listener.&nbsp; Musicians and teachers&nbsp;Brad Dawson and Luke Johnson from the Hays area showed their appreciation by playing at Ann's birthday celebrations at Wilson Care and Rehab.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Ann’s father, Glen Liston, was a journalist, photographer and newspaper editor.&nbsp; Her mother, Mildred, was highly educated at a time when it was unusual for women.&nbsp; She taught home economics, currently Family and Consumer Science.

Survivors include friends Kate Dutton Coddington&nbsp;of Wamego, Kansas; Elaine Garrison&nbsp;of Kansas City, Missouri; and former students and colleagues at FHSU.

Honorary pallbearers are Richard "Junior" Brown; Dr. David Goodlett;&nbsp;Andrew Warren; Gerald Spaits; Ben Markley; and Clint Ashlock.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Ann’s longtime partner, the late “Frank” (Francis) Windholz, rests in the Gorham, Kansas, cemetery.&nbsp; Ann’s brother Philip, sister Susan, and their parents also preceded Ann in death.

Per her request, Ann has been cremated.&nbsp; While circumstances do not allow for a service now, a musical celebration of Ann’s life is planned for early August. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Ann Elizabeth Liston

Mildred Waldren, 94, of Tribune, KS, passed away unexpectedly on 
Sunday, April 4, 2021, in Girard, KS.&nbsp; She was visiting Waldren 
relatives for Easter Sunday, and while taking a nap, passed away 
peacefully surrounded by her loving family.&nbsp; Mildred went out on her 
terms, still sharp until the very end.&nbsp; She died on what would have been
 her 70th wedding anniversary.&nbsp; This is a celebration of her life.

Mildred Opal Waldren was born southeast of Arapahoe in Cheyenne 
County, CO, in a sod house, on February 5, 1927.&nbsp; She had five sisters 
and two brothers.&nbsp; Her father, Elias Avery Jones, was a farmer and her 
mother, Caroline Susanne (Talmon) Jones was a housewife.&nbsp; Mildred was 
long impacted by the great depression and the Dust Bowl in the 1930s 
that made life extremely difficult for the Jones family, and for most 
people living on the great plains. While poor, no one in the Jones 
family ever went to bed hungry.

Mildred graduated from Arapahoe High School in 1945, and with the 
scholarship she received as valedictorian of her class, went to Blair 
Business College in Colorado Springs, CO.&nbsp; She graduated with a business
 certificate in 1947, and then moved to Tribune, KS, in August 1947.&nbsp; 
She began employment as the secretary in the KSU Greeley County 
Extension office in August 1947, just two weeks before the Greeley 
County Fair.&nbsp; She then was involved in some major capacity with every 
Greeley County Fair (74 consecutive years) through 2020.&nbsp; Mildred was 
looking forward to her 75th fair in 2021.

Attending a dance at the American Legion hall in Tribune in October 
1947, she met Buford Waldren.&nbsp; They were married in Raton, NM, on April 
4.&nbsp; Returning to Tribune, Buford and Mildred lived in a newly 
constructed house in town. Mildred continued to work at the Extension 
office until October 1952, when she resigned due to upcoming motherhood.

Vernon Lee was born on February 6, 1953, and Deryl Eugene was born on
 June 6, 1955.&nbsp; They continued to live in town until November 1956, when
 they moved to the farm southwest of Tribune, when Garry S. Waldren, 
Mildred’s father-in-law died.&nbsp; Mildred lived on the farm for the rest of
 her life.&nbsp; Buford and Mildred ran a wheat-cattle operation, and Mildred
 was a homemaker.

Mildred began working in the Greeley County Register of Deeds office 
part-time in 1983, and went full-time in 1988.&nbsp; She loved working there 
with Dee Anna Schneider and Lisa Robertson.&nbsp; She retired in September 
2012 at age 85.

Buford died March 19, 1998, after a long illness.&nbsp; Mildred remained 
on the farm and took over managing the wheat farming, while continuing 
to work fulltime at the register of deeds office.

Mildred was especially proud of and dearly loved her three 
grandchildren and frequently went to Omaha, NE, with the other Grandma 
Smith to help babysit when the parents were out-of-town with work.

She also loved to travel and was always on the go.&nbsp; She often stated 
that she never thought she would get to travel as much as she did.&nbsp; 
Highlights included trips to Germany, France and Austria in 1999; the 
Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium in 2005; Italy, Germany, and 
Switzerland in 2009; the Alaskan cruise in 2013; the Panama Canal cruise
 in 2017; the national parks of the west trip in 2019, plus many 
domestic trips around the USA.

Mildred was the embodiment of what a volunteer is.&nbsp; She understood 
the need to support one’s community and strongly supported Greeley 
County and Tribune in multiple ways for 74 years.&nbsp; Her volunteer 
accomplishments are vast and extensive.&nbsp; While never a 4-H member 
herself, she quickly understood the value of 4-H, and gave openly to 
support the youth of Greeley County.

Greeley County volunteer 4-H leader, 1950 – 2021.&nbsp; She was the 
organizational leader of the Go-Getters 4-H Club from 1950 – 2014.&nbsp; She 
was a project leader for 71 years in many projects, including:&nbsp; clothing
 construction, visual arts/arts and crafts in multiple areas, 
crocheting, embroidery, cake decorating, foods, photography and 
woodworking

K-State Research and Extension agent, Todd Schmidt shared, “One of 
her most valuable attributes, was her one-on-one mentoring ability.&nbsp; I 
have had more 4-H alumni comment on how they truly treasured the 
individual mentoring by Mildred, whether it was learning how to sew, 
learning the duties of 4-H club president, or simply learning about 
life.&nbsp; Mildred was always a ‘straight shooter’, yet she showed 
compassion, genuine interest, and love for whomever she was mentoring.”

A former 4-H member of Mildred’s, Dee Anna P. Schneider shared her 
thoughts.&nbsp; “The thousands of hours Mildred volunteered leading her club 
and teaching projects, made her not only a great mentor, but a life-long
 friend as well.&nbsp; Past 4-H members have “Mildred Stories” they continue 
to share and many of them are now parents and grandparents to another 
generation of 4-H’ers.&nbsp; As a 4-H member myself in the 1960s and 1970s, I
 thought Mildred Waldren started 4-H!&nbsp; When I became a project leader, a
 4-H parent and then a club leader, Mildred was there to guide me.&nbsp; I 
was also fortunate to have her as an employee in the Register of Deeds 
Office for many years.&nbsp; Mildred was a great mentor and friend to 
everyone.”

Mildred was selected as the Monsanto National 4-H Volunteer of the 
year in 2013, and was honored as the sole recipient during the 2013 
Extension Galaxy Conference in Pittsburgh, PA.&nbsp; She donated the $1,000 
prize money back to Greeley County 4-H volunteers towards the building 
of a covered rest area adjacent to the 4-H Building on the Greeley Co. 
Fairgrounds.

Mildred is survived by two sons:&nbsp; Vernon (Cheri) Waldren of 
Papillion, NE; Deryl Waldren of Colby, KS.&nbsp; She is also survived by 
three grandchildren:&nbsp; Jennifer (Bryce) Weber of St. George, UT; Andrew 
(Jennifer) Waldren of Omaha, NE/Central Asia; Heather Judy of Beaufort, 
South Carolina; and one step-grandchild, Lacy (Nathan) Eicher of 
Bellevue, NE.&nbsp; Great-Grandchildren are:&nbsp; Michael John Waldren, Nathanael
 Waldren, Isabelle Waldren, Samuel Waldren, and Orion Weber.&nbsp; 
Step-Great-Grandchildren are:&nbsp; Emma Eicher, Liam Eicher, Rowyn Eicher, 
Graeme Eicher, and Mairen Eicher.&nbsp; Two sisters survive her:&nbsp; Edna Grubb,
 Tribune and Dorothy Hull, Inman, KS.&nbsp; Mildred is also survived by 
numerous nieces and nephews, great, great-great, and great-great-great 
nieces and nephews.

Mildred is preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. MT, Wednesday, April 
14th, and 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. MT, April 15th at Price &amp; Sons 
Funeral Home in Tribune, Kansas.

Funeral Services will be in Tribune, KS, on Friday, April 16 with grandson Andrew Waldren and Jeri Farmer Smith presiding.

relatives for Easter Sunday, and while taking a nap, passed away 
peacefully surrounded by her loving family.&nbsp; Mildred went out on her 
terms, still sharp until the very end.&nbsp; She died on what would have been
 her 70th wedding anniversary.&nbsp; This is a celebration of her life.Mildred Opal Waldren was born southeast of Arapahoe in Cheyenne 
County, CO, in a sod house, on February 5, 1927.&nbsp; She had five sisters 
and two brothers.&nbsp; Her father, Elias Avery Jones, was a farmer and her 
mother, Caroline Susanne (Talmon) Jones was a housewife.&nbsp; Mildred was 
long impacted by the great depression and the Dust Bowl in the 1930s 
that made life extremely difficult for the Jones family, and for most 
people living on the great plains. While poor, no one in the Jones 
family ever went to bed hungry.Mildred graduated from Arapahoe High School in 1945, and with the 
scholarship she received as valedictorian of her class, went to Blair 
Business College in Colorado Springs, CO.&nbsp; She graduated with a business

Mildred Waldren

Anna Janell Kaiser, 82, passed away April 7, 2021, at Woodhaven Care 
Center, Ellinwood. She was born on October 26, 1938, in Henderson, KY, 
to Earnest and Alvera (Cook) Fisher. She married Donald Peter Kaiser on 
May 10, 1958, in Great Bend.&nbsp; He died May 7, 2009.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Anna was a housekeeper for Best 
Western and Larned State Hospital, previously working at Rexall Drug. 
She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic 
Church and the Altar Society. She enjoyed playing bingo, cooking, baking
 and attending craft shows.

Survivors include, two sons, Dale Kaiser (Aimee Johnston) of Kansas 
City, KS, and Devin Kaiser and wife&nbsp; Kristie of Hoisington; a daughter, 
Donna Fisher and husband Rik of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Trudy
 Richardson of Great Bend; and three grandchildren, Mackenzie Kaiser, 
Trevor Kaiser and Anneka Fisher. She was preceded in death by her 
parents; her husband, Donald Kaiser; and a sister, Lois Befort.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, April 
12, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 
p.m., and Vigil service with Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian 
Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 13, 2021, at St. Rose

Anna Janell Kaiser

On Good Friday, April 2, 2021, Eugene R. Bucciarelli passed away from a 
battle with cancer. He was in the company of his loving wife, Patricia 
Bucciarelli, who survives him. 

He is also survived by his sister, Mary 
Bucciarelli of North Tonawanda, NY, and numerous nieces and nephews. 
Eugene was born in N. Tonawanda, NY in 1930 to Alfonso and Lucia, both 
immigrants from Italy, who had six children. He proudly served in the 
U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict as an X-ray technician, following 
this with his undergraduate degree at Claremont Men’s College 
(Claremont, CA) under the G.I. Bill. He further completed his education 
with an M.B.A. at Northwestern University and then began his lifelong 
career in international financial auditing. He met his future wife, 
Patricia (née Dlabal, born in Lincoln Co., KS), in California, and would
 marry her in Turin, Italy in 1963 during his first overseas position. 
The Bucciarellis would spend the next several decades in Europe, where 
Eugene worked for the U.S. State Department in cooperation with the 
UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). 
 Due to his U.N. work, most of this time was spent in Switzerland, 
with other official travel taking him to Vietnam, Thailand, and the 
Philippines. Eugene was a tireless and dedicated professional who 
continued working well into his late 70s, as well as serving his 
local community in his 80s as a member of the Santa Barbara County 
Grand Jury. As an avid reader, he keenly followed current events and 
international affairs, and was always enthused to discuss these with 
family and friends. Eugene encouraged his nieces and nephews often and 
reminded them of the importance of education, goals, and pride in hard 
work. Once home in the U.S. after so many years abroad, the Bucciarellis
 became faithful members of their Catholic parish at Old Mission Santa 
Barbara. He embodied loyalty, faith, and patriotism throughout his life.
 Rest in the Lord’s Peace and Buona Notte, Uncle Gene. 
 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 12, 2021,&nbsp; starting at 10:30 AM at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson. 
Visitation will be on Sunday at the funeral home from 2 PM until 7PM 
with a vigil starting at 6 PM.

 Due to his U.N. work, most of this time was spent in Switzerland, 
with other official travel taking him to Vietnam, Thailand, and the 
Philippines. Eugene was a tireless and dedicated professional who 
continued working well into his late 70s, as well as serving his 
local community in his 80s as a member of the Santa Barbara County 
Grand Jury. As an avid reader, he keenly followed current events and 
international affairs, and was always enthused to discuss these with 
family and friends. Eugene encouraged his nieces and nephews often and 
reminded them of the importance of education, goals, and pride in hard 
work. Once home in the U.S. after so many years abroad, the Bucciarellis
 became faithful members of their Catholic parish at Old Mission Santa 
Barbara. He embodied loyalty, faith, and patriotism throughout his life.

 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 12, 2021,&nbsp; starting at 10:30 AM at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson. 
Visitation will be on Sunday at the funeral home from 2 PM until 7PM 
with a vigil starting at 6 PM.
 Memorials have been suggested to the American Cancer Society or the

In Loving Memory of Harvey James Pfannenstiel

Harvey passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2021, at his home. He was born on April 12, 1934, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Celestine and Philomena Pfannenstiel. 

After high school at St. Joseph Military Academy, he went to Maryland to study with the Capuchin brotherhood. After that he decided to move to Denver and went to mechanics school. He met the love of his life, Bernadine, while attending a young adult group called the Cathedral Club at the Denver Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

He is an Army Veteran and served as an Army Infantryman. He was in the 16th infantry regiment that is a part of the 1st Infantry division. He served in Germany and spoke fluent German. His days of enlistment were from June 1958 to August 1960.

On July 31, 1965, he married Bernadine Sattler and she survives at their home. Harvey was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Westminster, Colorado. His main occupation was a Licensed Master Electrician. He worked at Florescent Maintenance Company and Front Range Community College. He also worked as head of maintenance at St. Mark Catholic Church for many years. He was a member of the Denver Kickers Sport Club, The Knights of Columbus, the Westminster Elks Club, the American Legion, and a German singing group named the Arion Gesangverein.

He has six grandchildren – Zachary, Brandon and Sarah Oestereicher, Jacob Taddiken, and Austin and Claire Champion.He is also survived by brothers Norbert and Cliff, sisters Esther Wasinger, Lucy Dechant, Rosie Werth, Charlene Werth and Sandy Keil. He was preceded in death by brothers Lester and Terry and sisters Marie Gabel, Theresa and Agnes Pfannenstiel.&nbsp;He was a wonderful and loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. We will miss him very much. Services will be April 21, 2021, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Westminster. Burial will take place at Fort Logan Military Cemetery.
