Ailene Maxine Houghton

Lance Walters, age 69, passed away November 24, 2020. Lance was born 
on February 14, 1951, in Manhattan, Kansas, to Lloyd “Dutch” and Jan 
(McDonald) Walters. He married Pam Weigel and they later divorced. He 
then married Sandy Demel on September 25, 1987, at St. Patrick Catholic 
Church in Great Bend, Kansas.

Lance lived most of his life in Great Bend, Kansas. He owned and 
operated McDonald Tank &amp; Equipment, Inc. He began working there as a
 field hand on May 14, 1973. He worked his way up and then took over the
 business from his grandfather. Lance enjoyed working and anything 
outdoors, including riding the sand dunes, golfing and spending time at 
the lake.

Survivors include, his wife, Sandy Walters of the home; a daughter, 
Jessica Walters, a son, Kory Walters, and a grandson, Oren Walters, all 
of Great Bend; two brothers, Greg Walters and wife Gail of Siloam 
Springs, Arkansas, and John Hill and wife Julie of Olathe, Kansas. He 
was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd “Dutch” Walters and Jan 
(McDonald) Walters Hill; and a brother, Randy Walters.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 24, 2021, at Best Western Inn Courtyard. 2920 10th
 St., Great Bend. Memorials have been designated to the Kansas Oil &amp;
 Gas Museum or Holy Family School Endowment Fund, in care of Bryant 
Funeral Home.

John Randall Lampe, age 59, passed away April 10, 2021, at Wesley 
Medical Center, Wichita. He was born November 26, 1961, in Wichita, 
Kansas to Wendell &amp; Carolyn Sue (Beal) Lampe. He married Lenora 
Hayes on August 8, 1987, in Great Bend.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, John was previously a banker for 
First National Bank, Great Bend and Peoples State Bank, Ellinwood. Most 
recently, he served as Business Administrator, for sixteen years, for 
the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility until 2017. John was a 
member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Great Bend Noon Lions Club, and 
served as treasurer for the Kansas Correctional Association, and was a 
graduate of the Kansas Department of Corrections Leadership Development 
Academy, and the Great Bend Leadership Conference. John enjoyed golf, 
traveling, and family vacations. John also held a passion for planes and
 aviation, and had obtained his pilots license. He was an avid KU fan 
and loved spending his time outdoors. John especially loved spending 
time with his children.

John is survived by his wife, Lenora Lampe of the home; one son, 
Cameron Lampe of Shoreview, MN; one daughter, Taylor Lampe and fiancé 
Drew Fitzgerald of Lawrence; a sister, Kerry J. Lampe of Great Bend; a 
step-sister Jill Herald of Denver, CO; a step-brother, Bruce Huss and 
wife Karen of Wichita. He was proceeded in death by his father, Wendell 
Lampe; and his mother and stepfather, Carolyn and O.W. Huss.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, April 18, 
2021 at Bryant Funeral home, with family to receive friends from 2:00 to
 4:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 19,
 2021, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, with Pastor Barbara Jones
 and Reverend Dick Ogle presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend 
Cemetery. 

Memorials are suggested to the ALS Association or the American

John Randall Lampe

Kenneth Eugene Gatlin, 68, the best big brother ever, walked right into 
heaven on April 12, 2021. We are sorry not to have more days with 
Kenneth, but he is not sorry to now live in the presence of his Lord. 
Kenneth was born June 23, 1952, to Calvin and Joyce (Lauritsen) Gatlin 
and would be the oldest of eight children. His parents brought him home 
to the Lauritsen Homestead north of Gem, Kansas. Before he turned four, 
Kenneth, moved to Colby, Kansas, where he resided until this January 
when he moved to Pratt, Kansas to be close to family. 
Kenneth graduated from Colby High School in 1970 and Colby Community 
College in 1972 with an Associate of Arts degree in pre-engineering. But
 this was not the end of school for him! During the next 30+ years, he 
tutored his siblings and many nieces and nephews at one time or another.
 He patiently helped at any hour of the day or night, even with college 
math classes he had never taken. A math whiz, Kenneth challenged his 
nieces and nephews with complicated word problems at family gatherings 
and was thrilled when they eventually could solve these problems. 
Kenneth was known to his siblings as the "Loan Shark.” He was generous 
with his time and treasure, never denying a sibling’s request. Among 
other things, he made car loans, ensured a sister made it to her job 
interview by buying new tires after she had two blowouts, wired money to
 a brother whose car broke down in Nevada on his way to school in 
California, and co-signed on a credit card so that brother would not be 
stranded again. He loaned his car to siblings for months at a time while
 continuing to pay the car insurance. A phone call to Kenneth made 
everything right. What would we have done without Kenneth looking out 
for the rest of us? 
Throughout his life, Kenneth was on the move in all kinds of vehicles. 
He started riding a tricycle and soon graduated to riding a bike 
downtown to get the mail. The summer following 6th grade, Grandpa and 
Grandma Lauritsen requested Kenneth’s help with harvest, driving trucks 
and combines. Later he taught all his siblings to drive a stick shift. 
He just loved being at John Deere with Dad. From 8th grade on he spent 
most of his summers working at John Deere repairing all kinds of farm 
equipment. Kenneth had a keen understanding of equipment computer 
operations and was the preferred mechanic by many farmers. 
Around 2004, Kenneth heard of a little girl who perished because there 
was no one to drive the ambulance. This spurred Kenneth to action. After
 working at John Deere for forty years, he trained as an Emergency 
Medical Technician and then became the Director of EMS Services in 
Thomas County. He also maintained and drove the ambulance. Kenneth was 
Mom’s personal driver and was willing to take her anywhere for a family 
gathering. Regardless of the location, Kenneth willingly served as 
chauffer and even more willingly beat anyone in a board game. 
Kenneth was a world traveler and relished learning new things. He 
traveled to New Zealand, Australia, Israel, Greece, Panama, most of 
western Europe, among other destinations, including five visits to 
relatives in Denmark. Kenneth was known as a jovial friend. He was Mom’s
 traveling companion on Golden Passport trips. He served on the board of
 both the Western Plains Arts Association and Pickin’ on the Plains and 
regularly took Mom to their concerts. A faithful son, he stood by Mom’s 
side always, tenderly caring for her in her last days. What a son! 
Kenneth woke each day to put in an honest day’s work helping others, 
rather than thinking of himself. He worked tirelessly and played 
joyfully (especially if a game of Rook was on the line!). His life was 
undergirded by his faith in almighty God. Kenneth died as he lived - 
with his boots on. 
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He is 
survived by all seven of his siblings: Wilma Lauber (Mike) of Hill City,
 KS, Rita Crews (Paul) of Neosho, MO, David Gatlin (Oleva) of Shell 
Knob, MO, Dorothy Macy (Kenton) of Charleston, IL, Diana Weatherford 
(Kim) of Flower Mound, TX, Duane Gatlin (Christina) of Tomball, TX, and 
Terry Gatlin (Michelle) of Pratt, KS; sixteen nieces and nephews (and 
their spouses): Amber Morris (Philip), McKinzie Newman (Joe), Matthew 
Crews, Maria Crews, Nathan Macy, Aaron Macy, Stacia Macy, Emma 
Weatherford, Abby Weatherford, Jonathan Gatlin, Andrew Gatlin, Sarah 
Gatlin, Elijah Gatlin, Samuel Gatlin, Gabby Gatlin, and Luke Gatlin; and
 seven great nieces and nephews: Ethen, Shaelyn, Tyler, Bryden, Payton, 
Anna, and Paul. The family would like to thank Parkwood Village in 
Pratt, Kansas, for welcoming Kenneth into their community. 
Kenneth's Celebration of Life will be Saturday, April 17th at 2:00 PM at

Kenneth Eugene Gatlin

Donna Lee McAllaster, 90, passed away April 14, 2021, at Harry Hynes 
Memorial Hospice, Wichita. She was born January 20, 1931, at a small 
farm on the banks of Turkey Creek in Gosper County, Neb. to Loyal R. 
&amp; Mabel (Stump) Rhodes. Times on the farm were rough during the 
Great Depression, but they felt fortunate to always have milk, eggs, 
garden produce, and chickens.&nbsp; She learned to sew using the fabric from 
flour sacks.

By the time she graduated from High School, she had enough hoeing, 
weeding, hauling feed, milking, riding farm equipment, and plucking 
chickens to last a lifetime.&nbsp; She taught school for a year in a one-room
 schoolhouse, with no running water and a wood stove for heat. She later
 said that was the biggest challenge she ever had.

The next year she married a skinny pre-med student from western 
Kansas named Wendale E. McAllaster January 28, 1950 at her family home.&nbsp;
 She soon had more challenges, running the household and raising 
children among the demands of his surgical practice.&nbsp; They had a loving 
partnership for over 50 years.&nbsp; He died October 18, 2015.

A Great Bend resident since 1962, Donna was a homemaker, property 
manager, and volunteer.&nbsp; She was a member of First United Methodist 
Church, PEO, Progress Study Club, Barton County Alliance, Threadbenders 
Quilt Club, and Community Concert Board.&nbsp;&nbsp; She served as a Camp Fire and
 Cub Scout Leader, and driver for Meals on Wheels.&nbsp; Donna loved to quilt
 and sing with The Creatures of Habit.

Her greatest challenge really came after she no longer had the words 
to describe it.&nbsp; She negotiated the many disorientations and 
frustrations of Alzheimer’s with grace and dignity.&nbsp; She remained a kind
 and gentle soul with an iron backbone to the end, and loved her God and
 her family well.&nbsp; May her next chapter be a just reward.

Survivors include, two sons, Charles M. McAllaster of Longmont, Colo.
 and James W. McAllaster of Garden City; four daughters, Nancy J. 
Champion and husband Tom of Shelby Township, Mich., Claudia McAllaster 
of Leavenworth, Paula A. McAllaster of Wichita and Tammy Ellison and 
husband Elton of Leland, NC; a sister, Joan M. Burnham of Olathe; three 
grandchildren, Nick Wilkoff and wife Sun, Anna Jochum and husband Eric 
and Luke Feil and wife Christa; and five great grandchildren. She was 
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dr. Wendale E. 
McAllaster; and her brother, Doran L. Rhodes.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, April 18, 
2021 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 4:00 to
 6:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 19,
 2021, at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with Pastor 
Morita Truman presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery.

Marvin Edward Kisner, age 88, of Pfeifer, Kansas died Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at Hays Medical Center. &nbsp;

He was born September 9, 1932, in Pfeifer, Kansas to Stephen and Anna Marie (Dome) Kisner Sr.

He was a farmer and raised Charolais cattle,&nbsp; Marvin grew up in Pfeifer attended Pfeifer Grade School and was a graduate of Schoenchen High School.&nbsp; He was a veteran of the US Army and served in the Korean conflict.&nbsp; He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays, a former member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Pfeifer, and a life time member of the Victoria V.F.W. Post No. 1751.&nbsp; Marvin enjoyed his nephews, nieces&nbsp; and family.

Survivors include, one brother, Steve Kisner and wife, Jane, Hays, KS; three sisters, Lucille Huser-Knoll, Hays, KS; Florine Kisner, Pfeifer, KS; Marlene -Lang-Sarver and husband, Larry, Natoma, KS; several nephews and nieces.

She was a middle school teacher for over 25 years for Hays U.S.D. 489.&nbsp; Kay grew up in Larned, and was a 1956 graduate of Larned High School.&nbsp; She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; Kay enjoyed reading, puzzles, spending time outdoors gardening, and treasured time with family and friends.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Joan Marie Demel, 86, passed away April 12, 2021, at her home in 
Great Bend. She was born December 14, 1934, at Great Bend, to Ewald 
&amp; Rose (Schwartz) Kuhlman. She married Anthony Aloysius Demel on 
December 26, 1957, at Olmitz.&nbsp; He died July 10, 2004.

A lifetime Barton county resident, Joan grew up in Albert. She lived 
in Hoisington from 1960 to 1968 before moving to Great Bend. Joan was a 
teacher in rural Barton County and for several area Catholic schools. 
She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, the Altar Society and a 
former 4-H leader. She loved to garden and fish. Joan especially loved 
spending time with her family, her kitty Mitzi, chickens and guineas.

Survivors include, two sons, Tim Demel of Olmitz and Terry Demel and 
wife Vickie of Richland, Mo.; a daughter, Judy Demel and significant 
other Bruce Lawrence of Great Bend; a brother, Francis Kuhlman of Canyon
 Lake, Calif.; 8 grandchildren, Rebekah Graham (Chris), Alethea 
Ashbaugh, Joe Ashbaugh (Kyleen), Catie Demel (John Montgomery), Kristen 
Beakley (Cameron), Melissa Demel, Matthew Demel and Jonathan Demel; 14 
great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in 
death by her parents; her husband, Anthony Demel; and a sister and 
brother in law, Marian and James Rajewski.

John Cecil Arford Jr., 82, of Norton Kansas passed away April 9, 2021, at
 his home. He was born July 13, 1938, at the farmstead, in Almena, 
Kansas to Marjorie Jean (Frey) and John Cecil Arford Sr. John Grew up in
 Almena and was a 1956 graduate of Almena Rural High School. He attended
 Kansas State University where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta 
fraternity and graduated with a BS in Agricultural Economics in 1960. 

He
 served in the US Army then joined the Norton National Guard and spent a
 year in active duty at Fort Riley during the Berlin Wall crisis. John 
and Ada Marie Tharman were married on August 21, 1965, in Casper Wyoming.
 John and Ada farmed and raised cattle until his retirement in 2000. 
After retirement, he became an antique dealer, specializing in 
refinishing primitive furniture and boxes.
 John enjoyed attending Northern Valley sports events, dinner dance, 
fishing, skiing, “playing cards”, and growing potatoes and onions. He 
was a master storyteller and enjoyed entertaining guests with Ada at 
their home. For over 40 years they hosted pheasant hunters with whom 
they shared enduring friendships. He had a talent for making something 
out of nothing, whether it be transforming a pile of seemingly rotten 
boards into a beautiful piece of furniture or turning some discarded 
scrap metal into a mobile calf cage. John was also known for his 
well-worn work attire - earflaps and insulated coveralls. He considered 
his fraternity brothers to be truly his brothers and maintained lifelong
 friendships with them. He was a truly content person.
 John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his 
wife, Ada of the home and sons, Scott (Gwen) Arford of Oakland, CA and 
Mark Arford of Denver, CO.
 Memorial services will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, April 17, 2021, at the
 Lariat Building in Almena, Kansas. Inurnment at a later date at Mt. 
Hope Cemetery, Almena, KS.

Kathy was born September 20, 1952, in Alma, NE the daughter of Milo and Norma Jean (Stevens) Gitchel.

She met and married Dennis L. Willis on November 11, 1972, at the Englewood Wesleyan Church in Phillips County, KS.&nbsp;

Kathy loved to keep busy with handiwork.&nbsp; She loved sewing, 
crocheting, and creating dream catchers.&nbsp; All of which were shared with 
family and friends.&nbsp; She also liked to take time during her day to sit 
and watch the birds and squirrels in the yard.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughters Violet Sue and Pearl Mae; and brothers, Allan and Elbert Lee Gitchel.

Survivors include her husband Dennis L. of the home; daughters Amber 
Joy Clark of Walla Walla, WA and Dawn Marie Osbern of MN; 6 
grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; a brother Delbert Gitchel of 
Wilcox, NE; and two sisters Eileen Branstetter of Salina, KS and Lois 
Haas of Phillipsburg, KS.

Cremation was planned.&nbsp; Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m.

Kathy J. Willis

Freda Lynn (Peck) Parcel, 94, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2021. Her memorial Service is pending.

Freda was born July 28, 1926, at the family farm near Greensburg, Kansas, to Ellis Raymond and Nettie Irene (Shuck) Peck.&nbsp; She attended Greensburg public schools and &nbsp;graduated from Kansas State University where she met Clair Kern Parcel.&nbsp; They married February 27, 1949, and moved to Coldwater, Kansas.&nbsp; She loved all children, gardening, and reading.&nbsp; Freda volunteered countless hours with Sunny Valley 4-H and Comanche County Extension Homemakers Units, Arrowhead West and P.E.O.&nbsp; She was a faithful member of Coldwater First Presbyterian Church, serving as Sunday School teacher, Guild member, Elder and Deacon.&nbsp; She volunteered at Coldwater Jr High as a Special Ed Aide.&nbsp; &nbsp;A church home was&nbsp; very important to her.&nbsp; When she chose to move to Hays, Kansas she transferred her church membership to Hays First Presbyterian Church.

Freda was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Clair K Parcel, siblings: Ruth Scott, Nina Poplinger, Robert (Bob) Peck and Merlin Peck.

Freda Lynn (Peck) Parcel

Deborah Manbevers, 69, passed away April 11, 2021, at Olathe Medical 
Center. She was born July 14, 1951, at Circleville, Ohio to Guy &amp; 
Edith (Odell) Buskirk. She married Harold Manbevers November 12, 1981 at
 Circleville, Ohio.&nbsp; He died August 8, 2016.

Deborah was a resident of Great Bend from 1982 to 2000, before moving
 to Neodesha. She was a housekeeper for Holiday Inn Express. She enjoyed
 fishing but especially loved spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include, two sons, Gary Pearson and wife Deborah of 
Independence, Kan., and Scott Patton and wife Amanda of Iola; a sister, 
Darcy Jacobs and husband Nick of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Aaron 
Pearson, Aricka Bromley, Alexandra Pearson and Nathan Patton; and three 
great grandchildren, Adilyn Osterbuhr, Jack Bromley and Aspyn Pearson. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harold Manbevers; and 
two brothers, Guy Buskirk, Jr. and Gary Buskirk.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, April 15, 
2021 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. 
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 16, 2021 at 
Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Jane Heeke presiding. Interment will be
 in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend. Memorials have been designated

Phillipsburg resident Freda Faye Redinger passed away Feb. 14, 2021, at the Hays Medical Center at the age of 85.&nbsp; She was born July 5, 1935, in Kirwin, the daughter of Stanley &amp; Lillian (Kane) Cox.

Survivors include her sons: Don of Kansas City, Bob &amp; Terry of Phillipsburg; her daughter, Pamela Imm of Phillipsburg; her sister Carol Pratt; 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren &amp; 5 great great grandchildren

Freda Faye Redinger 

Dr. Leighton E. “Leigh” Fairbairn, 91, of Edmond, Oklahoma and formerly 
of Garden City, Kansas, died Friday, April 9, 2021 surrounded by his 
family. He was born April 20, 1929, in Claflin, Kansas, the son of John
 E. “Ed” and Frieda Grossardt Fairbairn. He grew up in the Claflin 
area, graduated from Claflin High School and was very active in 
athletics – football, basketball and track. In his senior year, he was 
voted President of his class. 
Upon finishing high school, he enrolled at Kansas State College and 
graduated with the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. While in 
college, he was a member of the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity and a 
member of the Alpha Zeta Honor Society. Upon graduation he set up a 
practice in Kinsley and married his long time sweetheart, Marilyn 
Blankenship from Great Bend. In two years, he was called to active duty
 from his ROTC as a Base Veterinarian at an Air Base in Oscoda, 
Michigan. He spent a two year tour of active duty as was required in 
ROTC. The Korean War was over. He returned to veterinary practice, not
 in Kinsley, but to Garden City with Dr. M. P. “Jack” Reeve where he 
practiced veterinary medicine for over 30-years. He transitioned to 
financial planning where he guided families in funding their children’s 
college and future retirement. He provided financial planning for over 
18-years until retiring in 2001. Throughout his life he became active 
in professional, civic, and church organizations. He was a member of 
the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association, holding several offices and 
as president in 1982. In 1986, he was chosen the KVMA Veterinarian of 
the Year. He was a member of the Kansas Livestock Association for over 
50 years. He was on the boards of the Kansas Board for Veterinary 
Technicians and the American Association of Bovine Practitioners. He 
was also a lifetime member of the Kansas State Alumni Association. 
In Garden City, he was a board member of Unified School District 457 
(1971 to 1979) and a member of Rotary International and Rotary 
Foundation – Paul Harris Fellow, American Legion, and the YMCA. He was 
the Co-Chair of the Life Show for Beef Empire Days. He was a member of 
the United Methodist Church where he held several offices including 
Board of Trustees, Administration Board, and many committees. He was a 
Lay Leader and president of the Builders Sunday School Class. 
Leighton enjoyed K-State sports, duck hunting, travel, working on 1968 -
 69 Ford Mustangs, and genealogy. Leighton and Marilyn had football 
season tickets to K-State for over 30-years. They also enjoyed GCHS and
 GC JUCO football games and still attended well after the children had 
moved from home. 
He was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Frieda Fairbairn and oldest son Kyle. 
He is survived by his wife of 67-years, Marilyn, his son Scott 
(Principal – Landscape Architect) and Sheri, Edmond, OK, his daughter 
Jan Scott (Designer / Sales) and Jim, Dodge City, his son, Brad 
(Vice-president – Ingredient Procurement) and Kathy, Cornelia, GA, and 
his son Lance (Sales), Wichita, nine grandchildren, and thirteen great 
grandchildren. 
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 
the First United Methodist Church in Garden City with Rev. Joel Plisek 
officiating. Visitation hours will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 
on Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City and the family will 
be at the funeral home to visit with friends. In lieu of flowers,

Dr. Leighton E. 'Leigh' Fairbairn

On April 11, 2021, Elmer Louis Reiser, 94, left this world a very 
blessed man. &nbsp;He was born on a farm near Hudson on August 4, 1926. &nbsp;His 
mother, Francis (Krkosska) Reiser, was a strong German woman and his 
father, Louis Reiser, a hard-working mechanic and farmer. &nbsp;He had an 
older brother Alois, and sister Jennie. &nbsp;He was followed by three 
brothers, Ralph, Rudy and Larry. &nbsp;Oh the stories he told about their 
shenanigans. He was proud that they always had each other’s back. One 
memory that he always told through tear filled eyes is of the last time 
he saw his oldest brother Alois. &nbsp;He remembers Alois looking back at the
 farm as he left to serve in World War 11, where he later lost his life.
 He was also quick to tell how hard they worked on the farm, milking 
cows, feeding cattle, shucking corn and hauling water through the snow.

After attending High School in Hudson, Kansas he moved to Great Bend 
and worked for Furrey Tire Company. &nbsp;He met the love of his life, Laura 
Jane Dolezal at her brother, Ralph Dolezal’s wedding. &nbsp;They were married
 on May 16, 1950. &nbsp;In 1952, he was drafted into the Navy. After his 
service, he took a job at Merring Son Gas Station and helped his dad 
farm in Stafford County. Elmer then went to work at Spruill Motors for 
the next twelve years. &nbsp;He then opened his own mechanic shop “Reiser 
Auto and Truck Service” on West 10th Street and for 20 years built a 
reputation as a dependable honest mechanic. &nbsp;In fact, he did many small 
jobs and when asked what was owed, his response was “Just buy me a cup 
of coffee someday”.

He enjoyed bowling, golfing, horseshoes, playing cards and traveling.
 One of his favorite stories was when he and Laura went on a month-long 
vacation with Ralph and Eloise Dolezal to explore NE United States. He 
soon realized that vacationing in New York was more expensive than the 
Midwest and had to call Farmers Bank to have money wired to travel home.
 &nbsp;Not only did he live a blessed and near perfect life, he experienced 
that as well on the golf course and bowling alley with a hole in one and
 a 298 bowling score. &nbsp;He was a member of The American Legion, The 
American Bowling Congress and a former member of The Knights of 
Columbus.

Elmer spent the last months of his life reminiscing about his friends
 he made during his 94 years. &nbsp;His obituary wouldn’t be complete without
 mentioning the following: Leo Alexander, Eugene Bugner, Melvin Dreher, 
Marvin Dunn, Jack Durbin, Elton Fischer, Wayne Fischer, Bob Gunn, Jack 
Hillman, Bob Hipp, Lee Hopkins, Marvin Karst, Les Johnson, Paul 
Linenberger, Virgil Maser, Lonnie McDonald, Bob Olivier, Arlon 
Postlethwaite, Alvin Reiser, Dennis Reiser, Howard Reiser, Norman 
Reiser, Carl Ringwald, Arthur Rose, William Rose, Greg Schenk, Silvester
 Swager, Paul Ueckert, Claude Vink, Larry Vink, Melvin Vink, Jim 
Weisner, Prentise Weltmer, Paul Wooster, and Joe Zecha, &nbsp;Although there 
were more friends and cousins he cherished, these are just some of the 
names his family remembers while reminiscing.

His family meant everything to him. His kids and grandkids will 
attest to never leaving his presence without being told that he loved 
them and was proud of them. &nbsp;

Elmer is survived by his wife of 70 years of the home, son Douglas 
Reiser (RoxAnn), daughters Cathy Anderson (Randy), Renee Buntain 
(Darren) and son-in-law David Huslig. &nbsp; He is also survived and deeply 
loved by 6 grandchildren, Amber Anderson, Rollie Anderson (Denise), 
Wyatt Huslig (Jessica Milsap), Kayci Huslig, Jordyn Southard (Kris) and 
Chase Buntain, four great-grand- children, Brooklyn Reynolds, Finnley 
and Clare Anderson, Callan Southard and many nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

Eight years ago he lost his daughter Cindy (Huslig) to cancer and 
looked forward to reuniting with her. &nbsp;He was also proceeded in death by
 his parents, and four brothers Alois Reiser, Ralph Reiser, Rudy Reiser,
 Larry Reiser, and one sister Jennie Ueckert.

Elmer will be missed but his legacy of honor, principles, work ethic and caring about his friends and family will live on. &nbsp;

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 15, 2021,
 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Don Bedore 
presiding.&nbsp; Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation 
will be 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 14, at Bryant Funeral 
Home, with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and a 
Vigil with Rosary at 7:00 p.m.&nbsp; Memorials may be given to St. Jude 
Children's Research Hospital, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

were more friends and cousins he cherished, these are just some of the 
names his family remembers while reminiscing.His family meant everything to him. His kids and grandkids will 
attest to never leaving his presence without being told that he loved 
them and was proud of them. &nbsp;Elmer is survived by his wife of 70 years of the home, son Douglas 
Reiser (RoxAnn), daughters Cathy Anderson (Randy), Renee Buntain 
(Darren) and son-in-law David Huslig. &nbsp; He is also survived and deeply 
loved by 6 grandchildren, Amber Anderson, Rollie Anderson (Denise), 
Wyatt Huslig (Jessica Milsap), Kayci Huslig, Jordyn Southard (Kris) and 
Chase Buntain, four great-grand- children, Brooklyn Reynolds, Finnley 
and Clare Anderson, Callan Southard and many nieces and nephews. &nbsp;Eight years ago he lost his daughter Cindy (Huslig) to cancer and 
looked forward to reuniting with her. &nbsp;He was also proceeded in death by
 his parents, and four brothers Alois Reiser, Ralph Reiser, Rudy Reiser,
 Larry Reiser, and one sister Jennie Ueckert.Elmer will be missed but his legacy of honor, principles, work ethic and caring about his friends and family will live on. &nbsp;Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 15, 2021,
 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Don Bedore 
presiding.&nbsp; Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation 
will be 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 14, at Bryant Funeral 
Home, with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and a

Elmer Louis Reiser

Carol Kathleen Carlin passed away on April 11, 2021. She was 81 years old, although she always told everyone she was 27.

She was born Carol Kathleen Glennemeier on October 29, 1939, in Densmore, KS to Francis and Agnes Glennemeier. She grew up on the farm with her three sisters, Marilyn, Roxie, Gayla and her three brothers, Bob, Bill, and Gary. She graduated from Densmore High School and then attended a women’s business college in Denver where she learned book work and accounting.

Carol went to work at the Lenora Exchange Bank once she returned from business college, where she met her husband, Weldon “Willie” Carlin. They married on February 9, 1961, and lived in Kansas City until he had completed his schooling in auto body work.

They moved back to Norton and started 60 years of life together that included bringing up four kids, Kathy, Marcelyn, John, and Brad. She was a stay-at-home mom for many years. She then went to work at JCPenney’s for a while and then Loves. Carol found her calling when she went to work at the Norton County Sheriff’s Office. She worked as a dispatcher for 25 years and almost always loved it. She was “Mom” to many that seemed to spend a little time occasionally in their accommodations.

Carol loved to read, do cross stitch, color, and play games. She believed that having hobbies kept her mind active. She was always looking for a new hobby to learn. She loved to go for rides out to the state park to see the lake and the animals. She would especially get excited when the turkeys were visible and when the white geese would come back.

Carol is survived by her husband, Weldon Carlin of Norton; her children: Kathy Carlin of Norton, Marcelyn Carlin of Hill City, John Carlin of Norton and his son, Chance Keiswetter of Hays, and Brad Carlin and his wife Chris of Norcatur; grandchildren: Kyle &amp; Stephanie Carlin and their kids Lauren and Evan; Donald and Kylie Eggleston and their kids, Vicki, Kori, and Liam, and Brian Carlin, Heath Welch, and Alex Fischer. Her survivors also include those she saw as her own kids, Troy Thomson and Tim Millan and all of those who at one time or another called her Mom. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandson, Lucas Welch. 

Memorial services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, April 17, 2021, at the First Church of God in Norton with fellowship to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the Andbe Home or Norton County Sheriff’s Office. Condolences may be left at www.plumergobber.com

Rita A. Schmeidler, 93, Hays, died Sunday, April 11, 2021, at Rooks County Health Center.

She was born February 10, 1928, in 
Severin, the daughter of August and Anna (Miller) Schmeidler.&nbsp; In 1946, 
she graduated from Girls Catholic High School.&nbsp; She worked at the old 
St. Anthony Hospital, Travenol, and was a caregiver to others.&nbsp; She was a
 member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.&nbsp; Rita enjoyed gardening, sewing 
and patching clothes, and baking desserts, especially angel food cakes 
and blackberry pies.&nbsp; She was a prayer warrior, had great faith in God, 
and was a faithful adorer at the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel.

Survivors include her brother Norman Schmeidler of Hays, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, four brothers: Pancratius, Jerome, Leo, and Edward and four 
sisters: Severina Lang, Margaret Bittel, Frances Schmeidler, and Alice 
Honas.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Thursday, April 15, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with
 Fr. Matthew Cowan officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in St. Severin 
Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:30 on Wednesday and 
from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Thursday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral

Rita A. Schmeidler

Richard Stanley Cross, 88, of Russell, Kansas, went to his new home 
April 10, 2021, while living at the Anthology of the Plaza in Kansas 
City, Missouri.

Richard was born August 1, 1932 to Lewis and Gloria Cross in Tonkaw, 
Oklahoma.&nbsp; Gloria went to be with the Lord in 1934.&nbsp; Lewis remarried.&nbsp; 
His new bride Maude Cross raised Richard as her own.&nbsp; Richard went to 
school in Tonkawa, Oklahoma but before he graduated high school he 
joined the Oklahoma National guard.&nbsp; On his 18th birthday his platoon 
was mobilized and he was sent to fight in the Korean war, where he 
served until 1953.&nbsp; Upon returning to the states, he finished high 
school and received his high school diploma and later graduated from 
Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Richard married his lifelong companion, Anna Hawkins Cross, in 1955, 
in Miami, Oklahoma. From this union was born Cynthia, Gloria, Duane and 
Gregory.&nbsp; Richard and Anna spent most of the 55 years in the Dorrance 
and Russell area where Richard ran the Sears catalog store until Sears 
closed.&nbsp; Richard then opened Hometown Brand Center and Rent to Own which
 he owned and operated for 25 years.&nbsp;

Richard is survived by his wife, Anna, who he was married to for 65 
years and two daughters, Cynthis Messeck and husband Mike of Victoria, 
Kansas, and Gloria Homeier and husband James Schwien of Russell, Kansas,
 and 8 grandchildren.&nbsp; Michelle (Spencer) Casey, Tia (Mark) 
Homeier-Blehm, Nichole Henderleiter, Memory (Kraig) Buffington, 
Justin(Betsy) Schwien, Destinee(Nate) Braun, Rachael Schwien and Bobby 
(Lindsey) Homeier and 17 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Richard is also survived by sisters Geneva Teachman, Collinsville, 
Oklahoma, Louisa Spiser of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Darlene Ruch of Tulsa, 
Oklahoma, Nila Branch of Winfield, Kansas and Ila Vorasaph of Bangkok, 
Thailand and brother Edward Cross of Olathe, Kansas.&nbsp;

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, two sons Duane &amp; 
Gregory Cross, one brother Douglas Cross and grandson-in-law Tim 
Henderleiter.&nbsp;

A graveside service to celebrate Richard’s life will be held at 10:30
 A.M. on Thursday, April 15, 2021, at the Russell City Cemetery in 
Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Military honors will be presented by the Russell 
V.F.W. Post #6240.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on

Thelma J. Cates, 94, died April 11, 2021, at Country Place Senior 
Living, Hoisington, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born June 18, 1926, to Andrew and 
Millie (Deel) Gower in Shamrock, Oklahoma.

On December 18, 1945, she married Vivan Cates inWinfield, Kansas.&nbsp; 
They were married for 55 years, he passed away in 2001.&nbsp; They settled in
 Claflin in 1954 where she was a Sunday schoool teacher and the church 
pianist for the First Southern Baptist Church.

She and Vivan had 6 sons and 2 daughters; the late, Don (Ginger) 
Cates of Wichita, the late, infant daughter, Deborah Ann Cates, Bruce 
(Craig) Cates of New Braunfels, Texas, Ray (Becky) Cates of Haslet, 
Texas, Bob (Alvita) Cates of Claflin, Steven (Susan) Cates of Emporia, 
Myra (Mike) Prosser of Claflin, and Barry (Kelly) Cates of Guyton, 
Georgia. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 45 
great-grandchildren and with one on the way, and 14 
great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara McDowell and husband Mike 
of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and four sisters-in law, Lorene Franklin, 
Sylvia Meyerdirk, Opal Gayhart and Connie Goin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son and an infant 
daughter; two grandsons, Michael Travis Cates and Trevor Cates; 
brothers, Raymond and Glen Gowers; and sisters, Frances Woolverton, 
Norma Jean Woodsend, Ruthie Costanza, Louise Steinert, and Wanda 
Harford.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with family to greet 
friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 
11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 15, 2021, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, 
Hoisington, Kansas, with Chaplain Jeff Owen presiding. Burial will

Charles Edward “Ed” Arnold, 89, died April 10, 2021 at Hillside Village in DeSoto, Kansas.&nbsp;

He was born May 22, 1931 in Garfield, the son of Charles and Mary (Gum) Arnold.

He grew up in Pawnee County and attended Rozel Schools, graduating in 1949.

On February 12, 1950, he married Eloyce Franz in Rozel, Kansas.

He was a farmer-rancher in Pawnee County, moving to Dodge City in 
1980 where he worked as a cattle-feeder/order buyer until 2017 when he 
moved to Overland Park, Kansas.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, Dodge City, and the Dodge City County Club.

Survivors include three sons:&nbsp; William and wife Diane of Overland 
Park, Kansas; James and wife Linda of Holdrege, Nebraska; and Philip J 
and wife Jacqueline of Overland Park; seven grandchildren (Tamra Pierce,
 Christopher Arnold, Elizabeth Hanson, Aaron Arnold, Alex, Jessica and 
Emery Arnold) and nine&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloyce, one brother Loren Arnold and one sister Nan Gardiner.

Memorial graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Larned Cemetery.

Charles Edward 'Ed' Arnold

Longtime Sharon Springs, KS resident Elsie Elizabeth (Maki) Cox, 90,
 passed away on November 27, 2020 at the Rose Medical Center in Denver.

Elsie was born on September 6, 1930 in Crystal Falls, Michigan to 
John E. and Martha (Lappi) Maki.&nbsp; She was the eldest of six children.&nbsp; 
She grew up in Crystal Falls and graduated from Crystal Falls High 
School in 1948.

On September 1, 1949, she married Leonard Cox in Waukegan, Illinois.&nbsp;
 To this union, three children were born; Jeanne, Kevin and Darrell.

In 1992, Elsie and Leonard retired in Weskan KS prior to settling in 
Sharon Springs in 1999. She worked many years as a secretary in the 
Medical Profession.&nbsp; She was a member of the Sharon Springs United 
Methodist Church, and enjoyed many hobbies:&nbsp; including knitting, 
crocheting, baking bread, swimming, and reading.&nbsp; She loved sports, 
especially the Kansas City Royals and the KU Jayhawks.&nbsp; She also enjoyed
 going to her grandchildren’s sporting events.&nbsp;

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Leonard and her brother, Erland Maki.

She is survived by her three children; Jeanne Moffat of Cheyenne 
Wells, CO, Kevin (Jeanne) Cox of Colby, KS and Darrell (Johannah) Cox of
 Lawrence, KS.&nbsp; She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 7 great 
grandchildren and 4 sisters; Esther (Rudy) Berger of Sierra Vista, AZ, 
Donna Maki of Racine WI, Patricia (Annie)&nbsp; Jansky of Peoria, IL and 
Linda Banicki of Austin, TX.

Elsie’s wish was to be cremated and have a memorial service in the spring.
