

Lori Denise Dykes Morris, 58, of Colby, died Wednesday, July 17, 2024, in Aurora, CO at UC Health Center. She was born on February 15, 1966, in St. Paul, MN, to Bill E. and Theresa (Hipp) Dykes and was the youngest of 11 kids. Lori graduated from Great Bend High School in 1984 and married Timothy Morris on May 10, 1986, at St. Rose of Lima Church, in Great Bend.

Lori’s first job was working at a Dairy Queen and then she was a checker at Dillons and worked in the pharmacy. She had also worked for Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs. For a time, Lori stayed home, and home schooled the kids. She also served as a pastor’s wife and worked in many ministry roles over the years. She then went to work as the administrative assistant at College Drive Assembly of God Church, in Colby, for over ten years.

Lori was a people person and mother to many and especially loved to make people laugh. She loved spending time outdoors, going on walks, planting flowers and taking care of her plants. She loved the mountains, listening to music, and going for drives, especially in her Jeep Wrangler. Her and Tim loved to fish, and Lori usually out fished him. Lori was always praying for others and enjoyed participating in Bible studies and women’s groups. She was a great homemaker and people especially loved her banana bread and cheesecake. Above all, she loved her family and spending time with her grandson, great-niece, great-nephew, and grand dog (who called her Lollie).

Lori was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, Phil Carlson, and sisters Dana Dykes and Tina Alonzo.

She is survived by her husband Tim; children, Natalie (Jordan) Klima, of Hays and Caleb (Breanna) Morris, of Colby; grandson, Elijah Dirks and two more grandchildren on way; brothers, Mark Dykes of Blaine, MN, Jeff ( Carol) Dykes of Centennial, CO; Luke ( Renee) Dykes, of Great Bend, Gary Dykes, of Great Bend, and Matt (Tami) Dykes, of Great Bend and sisters, Lois Dominguez of Great Bend, Gail (Carl) Cooper, of Great Bend and Jane (Edward) Maresch, of Salina. She also left behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

A reception of family and friends will be from 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. A Celebration of Life will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2024, at Heartland Christian School, Colby with a meal to follow for all attendees. Casual dress is encouraged but attendees are welcome to wear what they’re comfortable in. Curtis Duncan, 69, of Goodland, KS passed away at his home on Friday, July 12, 2024 leaving behind a legacy of exceptional service to his community and broadcasting.

Curtis was born on June 26, 1954, to Duane and Doris Duncan in Olathe, KS. At the age of 9, he watched two broadcasters from KOFO in Ottawa cover their local county fair passing along interviews, 4-H results, and information on fair events. Knowing instantly this is what he wanted to do, he took the initiative to reach out to these men. As a result, he was on the air live with them later that very afternoon assisting in fair coverage. His first talent compensation was 2 cartons of chocolate milk. This marked the beginning of what would be a remarkable union of broadcasting and service to community that spanned over the past 6 decades.

Curtis made many stops early in his broadcast tenure…Ottawa, Topeka, Montgomery City Missouri, Leonardtown Maryland, Columbus Mississippi…and he was even a TV news anchor for 4 years in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. It was there he was dubbed “the poor man’s Willard Scott.” In the mid-90’s, Curtis moved to northwest Kansas and became the morning show host for KXXX-AM. Following two years in Colby, he was hired by KLOE/KKCI radio in Goodland where he proudly and enthusiastically remained until his passing.

Curtis was the quintessential community broadcaster. His listeners relied on him for comprehensive weather coverage, both on calm days and stormy days. He was known to camp out on a cot at the radio station for days, always just a few paces away from the mic so that he could pass along the latest information. He was deemed so important to the area that the National Guard made it a priority to get him to the station during winter storms if the roads were unpassable.

Curtis’ commitment to community extended beyond the airwaves. His passion for storytelling and a genuine interest in the lives of those he served made him an indispensable pillar of the community. He was seen at nearly every school concert, from elementary to high school. The Goodland Auditorium even had a permanent seat reserved for him (3rd row aisle seat). He was a fixture at county fairs, service organization fund raisers, ribbon cuttings, and numerous other community events. He was always armed with his trusty recorder so that he could share highlights of those events with his extremely loyal listeners during his popular “Good Neighbor Hour” on the KLOE morning show. Curtis served as Chairman of the Board for the Sherman County Red Cross, was a board member with the Goodland United Methodist Church, and was active with the local VFW, American Legion, and countless other service organizations. In 2019, the Kansas Association of Broadcasters honored him with the “Sonny Slater Award” for service to the station and community.

Curtis is survived by his daughter Malia (Mike) Brand of Overland Park, KS, his granddaughter Vega Mercer (whom he proudly announced her birth to listeners on air in 2007), his sisters Glenda Kramer, Gloria Ware, and brother Phillip Duncan. He is proceeded in death by his parents Duane and Doris Duncan and his sister Eileen Duncan.

Curtis’ family has been deeply touched by the community’s outpouring of love and sentiment for him since his passing. They invite the community to join them in a celebration of Curtis’ life on Friday, August 2nd at 10:45 AM MT at the United Methodist Church in Goodland, KS with Pastor Younghwan Won officiating. The family encourages attendees to wear their favorite color with the same joy that Curtis did for his Hawaiian shirts. Eugene
Francis Skolaut, 83, passed away July 17, 2024, at Azria Heath Care, Great
Bend, Kansas. He was born March 13, 1941, in Great Bend, to Joseph and Gertrude
(Mauler) Skolaut.

After
graduating Pawnee Rock high school, Eugene joined the National Guard and served
for six years. He was a lifetime resident of rural Olmitz. Eugene was a
dedicated farmer, stockman, and diary man. He loved to drive his four-wheeler,
was a very accomplished welder but above all, he was kind, loving, thoughtful,
generous, and a hard worker. 

Survivors
include one sister; Joann Koriel (John) of Rush Center and two brothers; Vernon
Skolaut of Olmitz, Charles Skolaut (Mary) of Great Bend, nieces; Elizabeth
Schmidt of Eudora, Angela Harvey (Flynn) of Liberty, Missouri, great niece;
Brianna Schmidt, great nephews; Connor Schmidt, Dylan Schmidt, Carson Harvey,
and Tucker Harvey. He was proceeded in death by his parents and nephew; Ethan
Schmidt. 

Visitation
will take place 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2024, with a vigil and
rosary at 7:00 p.m. all at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will
be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 22, 2024, at St. Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz,
Kansas with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Interment will follow at St. Ann

Eugene Skolaut, age 83

Marlene K. “Mollie” (Atkinson) Haberer, 82, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at the Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas with her loving family by her side.

Mollie was born December 10, 1941 in Marquette, Kansas. She was one of five children born to John and Ruby (Liss) Atkinson. She grew up in Marquette and graduated from Marquette High School in the Class of 1959. She then attended Kansas Wesleyan University where she graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. She would later serve on the Board of Trustees at KWU. Her time at KWU held a special place in her heart as it was there that she made cherished friends and memories that would last a lifetime.

Mollie met, fell in love, and was united in marriage to Eric Haberer on July 24, 1964 in Marquette. They made their home on the farm north of Russell. This union was blessed with three children; Denise, Paul and Matthew. Both Eric and Mollie enjoyed following their kids and grandchildren’s sports and activities closely. This brought immeasurable happiness into their lives.

Mollie started her elementary teaching career in Salina followed by a year in the Luray School District before moving to USD 399 in Natoma, Waldo, and Paradise where she worked for 25 years. Mollie took great pride in being an educator and later she returned to Ft. Hays State University to obtain a Reading Specialist Degree. So many will remember Mollie fondly for her kindness and patience.

Beyond her professional accomplishments and family life Mollie is a member of the Paradise Valley Grace Church in Paradise, Kansas. She also dedicated herself to various causes close to her heart including volunteering with the Russell Regional Hospital Auxiliary while also working at the conference level with the United Methodist Church as well as local church activities.

More important than her life achievements is the fact that Mollie was considered by those who knew her to be a kind-hearted, gracious, Christian woman who fiercely loved God, her husband, family and community.

Mollie’s surviving family include her husband of almost 60 years, Eric of the home; daughter, Denise Archer (Kevin) of Colwich, Kansas; son, Paul Haberer (Manuela) of San Antonio, Texas; daughter in law, Gabi Haberer Brown; twin sisters, Karen Pricer (Dan) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Sharen Resendes (Joe) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and six grandchildren; Calin Archer, Bret Archer, Julie Archer, Sophia Haberer, Levi Haberer and Aiden Haberer.

Mollie was preceded in death by her parents; son, Matthew Haberer on June 9, 2021; and nephew Stephen Resendes.

Celebration of Mollie’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, July 22, 2024 at the Paradise Valley Grace Church in Paradise, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Fairport Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Sunday, July 21, 2024 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Imy began life in Hays enjoying the devotion of her loving parents, dear brothers James &amp; Thomas (T.J.) &amp; later a welcomed sister, Judy. They've all preceded Imy in death.

Then doubly blessed with an ever present, extended clan and further nurtured by lifelong friendships with a host of spirited and steadfast cousins. These were treasured blessings in Imy's life which contributed greatly to the woman she became.

Graduated with honors, Girls Catholic High, Hays KS. She attended Mount Saint Scholastica College, Atchison, KS.

Kansas University, Lawrence, KS, UMKC, Kansas City, MO. rounded out her education where as sole female, class of '52, graduated with a B.S. in Pharmacy and named Woman of the Year in Pharmacy (senior year,) by the APHA, for extraordinary, scholastic achievement.

Blessed with 2 beloved daughters, Maryellen (Steve) Marr, Linn Valley, KS. &amp; Margaretanne McJunkin, Jefferson City, MO.

Imy, &amp; her girls worked together &amp; played together. This included many adventures, New York City yielded an impromptu&nbsp;Q &amp; A (on the open air, top deck of the Staten Island ferry returning from the Statue of Liberty,) by Bill Murray, as&nbsp;he, Dan Akroyd &amp; Sigourney Weaver were aboard after filming for Ghostbusters. From charming Duluth, to the world- class Smithsonian Mall, plus every state on the West coast, including a jaunt to British Columbia, Canada to visit dear friends the Jepsons and crown jewel the Aloha spirit of Maui, HI. Imy’s final road trip was to visit Bobbi Vollmer, in Denver, CO.&nbsp; seeing cousins, Imy’s nephew &amp; wife and the infamous Hammonds candy factory. Fun times, great memories, we made a good team.

Practicing at L.D. Robbins Drugs, Larry Leard Pharmacy, McDaniel Pharmacy, Merriam Pharmacy, finally with 20 years of service at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

Imy enjoyed the singular distinction of being the first female pharmacist hired in Overland Park. The associations she cultivated throughout her distinguished career enriched her life beyond measure.

A granddaughter graced Imy's world, Amanda (Curt) Huwe, Overland Park, KS. They were exceedingly close throughout. Great Grandchildren Jackson &amp; Katelyn Huwe, Overland Park, KS. were highlights who brought much Joy to her golden years.

Imy took pride in her role as Aunt to James' boys, as she watched them attain great personal achievements.

Stephen (Diann) Aurora, CO., Dr. Roger (Lynn) Dreiling, LaQuinta, CA., David Dreiling, Dallas TX. Christopher &amp; Stanley Dreiling, Hays, KS. both preceded Imy in death.

Imy married long time beau, Larry Leard, Oct, 1987, which inspired an untold number of wonderfully rich &amp; rewarding experiences. They shared the same profession and similar passions.&nbsp; Season ticket holders to the Royals, and sports enthusiasts in general, Imy could call the color of a game as well as any announcer &amp; might have been a referee in another lifetime. Imy was a people person, with many deeply rewarding friendships that spanned the decades. She was a surrogate mother to several. If she knew you, chances are you received greeting cards to mark special occasions. She was a platinum member of Hallmark cards as proof of this lifelong ritual. Imy loved to cook and bake, whether her traditional BBQ brisket or red velvet cake. She was an accomplished seamstress (trained by nuns,) and excelled at all manner of handiwork (her Xmas Stocking creations each took 40 hours to craft.) Imy enjoyed who done it novels and an avid crossword puzzler, also a&nbsp;devoted Turner Classic Movies aficionado and&nbsp;as it turns out, particularly lucky at Bingo (Imy’s lucky seat is now occupied by friend Rin Tillman who tries to keep the streak going.) Imy, lived her sunset years at Silvercrest College View, Independent Living. This community of kind and generous residents and staff (shoutout to their devoted PT/OT department who kept Imy up and running,) filled her days with a heartfelt camaraderie, to which Imy's family is eternally grateful.

This included many adventures, New York City yielded an impromptu&nbsp;Q &amp; A (on the open air, top deck of the Staten Island ferry returning from the Statue of Liberty,) by Bill Murray, as&nbsp;he, Dan Akroyd &amp; Sigourney Weaver were aboard after filming for Ghostbusters. From charming Duluth, to the world- class Smithsonian Mall, plus every state on the West coast, including a jaunt to British Columbia, Canada to visit dear friends the Jepsons and crown jewel the Aloha spirit of Maui, HI. Imy’s final road trip was to visit Bobbi Vollmer, in Denver, CO.&nbsp; seeing cousins, Imy’s nephew &amp; wife and the infamous Hammonds candy factory. Fun times, great memories, we made a good team.Practicing at L.D. Robbins Drugs, Larry Leard Pharmacy, McDaniel Pharmacy, Merriam Pharmacy, finally with 20 years of service at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.Imy enjoyed the singular distinction of being the first female pharmacist hired in Overland Park. Imogene "Imy" (Dreiling) Leard

Phyllis Marie (Cory) Hembree, 89, passed away on July 17, 2024 at Reflection Living Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Phyllis was born in Longton, KS on November 5, 1934, to Freddie Alfred Cory and Mary Isabella (Weidner) Cory.&nbsp;

Phyllis attended school at Oak Valley in Longton through her junior year. She moved to Lyons, KS to help her sister, and she decided to get a job at the local Rexall drugstore. She rented a room and finished high school, graduating in 1952.&nbsp;

Phyllis met an oilfield worker, Bob, who she assisted in the drug store with a smashed thumb. &nbsp; She married Bob on May 28, 1953 in Lyons, KS and then moved to Ness City, KS in 1961.&nbsp;

Phyllis and Bob raised four kids and ran a successful oilfield corporation, Derrick Inn Motel, Park Motel, and the Frigid Creme. &nbsp;Phyllis was also active as a den leader for her three sons’ Cub Scouts and daughter’s Girl Scouts troops. &nbsp;She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, painting, and crafts, and had a passion for traveling the world with Bob and friends, and also entertained friends and family locally.&nbsp;

Survivors include 3 sons, Fred (Sherry) Hembree, Hutchinson; Bobby Hembree, Garden City; Steve (Joy) Hembree, Great Bend; 1 daughter, Tena (Rod) Wasinger, Bennington, 11 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, 5 sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters I. Helen Dexter and F. Mae Larkin, and daughter-in-law Diana Hembree.&nbsp;

The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, followed with the burial service in the Ness City Cemetery. The family would like to extend an invitation for lunch at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, following the burial. Viewing will be on the morning of July 24,2024 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home beginning at 9 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be given to the National Alzheimer’s Association.&nbsp;

Phyllis Marie (Cory) Hembree

Karol Ann (Kruse) Swart, 79, of Grinnell, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at home with her family by her side, after battling dementia. She was born at 12:32 a.m. on October 15, 1944, in Colby, KS, to Ralph and Armella (Lintel) Kruse and weighed in at 9lbs 2oz. Karol received her first haircut at six weeks old, so her mom could mail it to her dad who was serving in the Navy. She grew up on a farm southwest of Oakley and was the oldest of eight kids. Karol graduated from Oakley High School and attended Fort Hays State University.

On January 29, 1964, Karol married the love of her life, Terry Swart, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Oakley. They met at the Dairy King, where Karol worked in high school. They lived a wonderful life together on the Swart Ranch, located 20 miles south of Grinnell. There they raised their two children, Amy and Terrall, who were Karol’s pride and joy.

Through the years they raised pigs, a cow and calf herd, horses, bucket calves, dogs, cats, rabbits and ran a fat cattle feedlot. Terry and Karol made their dream house plans become a reality when their new house was built in 1975, smack dab in the middle of their pasture. Terry calls it “God’s Country”. 

Karol said she always wanted to live in town, but when the opportunity arose, she fought to stay on the ranch.

After the kids were older, Karol went to work in Oakley. She worked at Mitten’s Skelly Truck Stop as a cook and Amy joined her there as a waitress. Later they both worked together at the Colonial Steakhouse. Karol also worked at the Oakley School Cafeteria and later she and Terry worked together at Warren’s IGA. Karol had a gift to cook!

After her kids were grown, Karol attended the Liberal Truck Driving School. Upon graduating, her and Terry team drove a semi, for Barnett Trucking, all over the country, coast to coast. They called themselves “Paid Snowbirds”. This allowed them to travel and see many states.

Karol’s kids were her pride and joy, but then came her first grandchild, Jason. It was love at first sight; she enjoyed every minute with him! Seven years later she was doubly blessed with twin granddaughters, Ashley and Emily. She couldn’t get enough of the three of them and spent lots of time babysitting. Karol was a fun grandma, spoiling them rotten and taking them on many adventures as they grew up. Being a grandma was great, but then came her four great grandkids: Mia and Chelsey Reyes and Baylor and Eli Chartier. All four were perfect in her eyes. Together they carried on the grandkid adventures with fun on the ranch riding 4-wheelers, sledding, climbing the bluffs, painting, coloring and putting together puzzles. They took road trips to swimming pools, water slides, zoos and the lake. Her kids, grandkids and great grandkids were blessed with a life full of fun and love with her. Memories that will be cherished forever.

Karol lived the best life with her husband Terry by her side through all of it. She enjoyed farm life, caring for her kids and farm animals, cooking and gardening. Through the years she enjoyed various hobbies: crafting, taking pictures, scrapbooking, ceramic and tole painting, sewing, quilting, coloring, puzzles, puzzle books, wildflowers and bird watching. Karol was an avid Elvis fan, believing someday he would come for her. She was also a huge Billy Ray Cyrus fan, dragging Terry and family to various states to attend his concerts.

Karol is survived by her husband of 60 years, Terry Swart; children, Amy (Larry) Smith, of Dodge City and Terrall (Stephanie) Swart of Hays; grandchildren, Jason Swart, Ashley (Josh) Chartier and Emily (Gustavo) Reyes, all of Hays and great grandchildren, Baylor and Eli Chartier and Mia and Chelsey Reyes. Upon Terrall’s marriage to Stephanie, she gained more grandchildren, Chelsea (Ryder) Eakin, of Hays, and Paige (Alex) Nuss, of Hutchison, and great grandchildren, Callie, Carson and Caylor Eakin and Easton and Beckett Nuss. She is also survived by her siblings and in-laws, Lanny Hockersmith, Rodney (Mary Lou) Kruse, Butch (Cheri) Kruse, Connie Evans, Berny (Missy) Kruse, Janice Wilkening, and Robert (Chan) Kruse; her aunts, Geraldine Swart and Dixie Lintel and 25 nieces and nephews and their families. She loved family get togethers and loved all the kids.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Herman and Mary Lintel and Ben and Carrie Kruse; her parents, Ralph and Armella Kruse; in-laws, Leonard and Elizabeth Swart; sister, Marilyn Hockersmith; sister-in-law Connie (Dennis) Dawson; brother-in-law Rod Wilkening; aunts and uncles, Marietta Coats, Elaine Hammerschmidt, Eunice Weber, LaVerna Robben, Lila Heier and Donnie Lintel; an infant son Paul and her cat Lilly.

A celebration of life will take place at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 19, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Oakley. Karol would have requested that everyone dress casually for the service. Virginia Lea (Owen) Olberding (91) passed away peacefully on July 15, 2024 at Downs Care &amp; Rehab in Downs, KS.

Virginia was born on March 5, 1933, to Archibald &amp; Alma (Parker) Owen in Colby, KS.

Virginia was many things to many people - mom, wife, sister, grammy, aunt, baker, quilter, gardener, friend…whatever she was to the people in her life, she was your biggest supporter. Virginia worked side by side with her biggest fan, Merlin, running V &amp; M Distributing in Colby. Moving to Cawker City, KS, in 1991 to live out the rest of their lives, in the perfect location, halfway between all the kids and grandkids.

Virginia is preceded in death by her husband Merlin Olberding, her parents Archibald &amp; Alma (Parker) Owen, brothers Conrad Owen and Owen Owen, sister Lora Ann (Owen) Highberg, father and mother-in-law CB &amp; Rachel Olberding and son-in-Law Kent Beisner

Connie Lee Zachgo LaShell, 76 passed away on July 17, 2024 at SunPorch of Smith County of Smith Center, KS. Connie was born on May 19, 1948, in the country outside of Ash Grove, KS and was the daughter of Kenneth and Ila (Parli) Zachgo.

Connie grew up on a farm in the Ash Grove area. She was the oldest of six siblings. She attended Hunter High School, and her class of 1966 was the last class to graduate from Hunter.

On June 4, 1969, she married the love of her life, Allen LaShell. They were married for 39 years before he proceeded her in death on April 9, 2009. To this union two daughters were born, Tammy and Julie.

Connie spent many years providing childcare to families in Ellsworth, KS. She then moved onto employment at Eschbaugh Advertising in Wilson, KS where she worked the rest of her career till she retired. After retirement Connie volunteered for the Senior Companion program in Lucas, KS.

Connie is survived by two daughters Tammy (Carolyn) LaShell, Sylvan Grove, KS and Julie (Dusty) Troy, Stromsburg, NE. Grandchildren: Niki Kempke, Carrie Kempke, and Calob Troy. Siblings: Jim Zachgo, Sandy (Edgar) Brummer, Virginia (Travis) Naylor, and Toni (Royce) Hillegeist. Many nieces and nephews too many to name. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Ila (Parli) Zachgo and brother Joe Zachgo.

A celebration of Connie’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday July 27, 2024, at Vesper Community Center, 1247 N 120th Rd Vesper, KS, with Pastor Melissa Naylor officiating.

Patricia Faye Eaton, 77, passed away early Monday morning, July 15, at her garden home in Columbus, Nebraska. She was born June 26, 1947, in Norton, Kansas, the daughter of Paul M. Smith and Neva Mae (Rowley) Smith, granddaughter of Ethel Frazier Rowley.

Patricia grew up in Lenora Kansas, raised by her Grandmother Ethel, and graduated from Lenora High School. She was joined in marriage to Robert Edwin Eaton January 22, 1965, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Almelo, Kansas.

She and her husband lived in numerous towns and cities in Kansas, Idaho, Iowa, Nebraska, Kentucky, eventually settling in Columbus, Nebraska. Through the years she held a variety of jobs including waitressing, hotel clerk, packing house worker, Sheriff’s Deputy and Dispatcher, and truck harness manufacturing. She finished the last 18+ years of her working career as a USDA inspector. She attended Emporia State Teachers college in Emporia, Kansas studying Psychology and Criminal Justice. She also attended and graduated from Central Community College in Columbus, Nebraska. She was also a full time Mom.

She is remembered by her husband, Robert; their three sons and one daughter and their spouses: Ed and Mary Eaton, Grapevine, TX, Dan and Monica Eaton, O’Neill, NE, Tanya (Eaton) and Randy Stava, Santaquin, UT, Austin Eaton, Yankton, SD; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren, and her two sisters, Judy Peay, Phoenix, AZ and Shernie Finch, Black Mountain, NC.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her grandmother.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Friday, July 19, 2024 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Lenora South Cemetery, Lenora, KS. Dean Harold Roadhouse was born on March 6, 1943 in Osborne, Kansas to Harold and Opal (Leighton) Roadhouse. Dean lost his battle to cancer on Sunday, July 14, 2024 surrounded by family.

He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Osborne High School in 1961. He then met and married Patty Williams in January 1964 and they immediately moved to Denver, Colorado where he worked for Coors for four years and had two children.

Dean’s love of the land and farming brought the family back to Osborne to farm and raise cattle with Harold and Opal. They continued to farm until Dean’s retirement in 2019.

In their rare “off time”, Dean and Patty enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren, especially cheering on Cade’s racing and sporting events; camping and fishing with friends and family; going to car races; and playing cards and having a beer or two.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Opal, and his grandson, Cody Schuber. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patty; his children Troy Roadhouse of Osborne and Debi (Jason) Schuber of Wichita; grandson Cade Schuber of Wichita; siblings Marge Cline of Osborne, Rex (Barbara) Roadhouse of Moore, Oklahoma, and Nelda (Jim) Hall of Wichita; and many nieces and nephews.

Wolf, into the education profession and taught at the Jefferson County Schools. She became a farmer when she married Warren L. Tacha and moved to Jennings, Kansas.

Lynn served on many local boards and was the City Clerk for Jennings. The times she spent working for the Jenning City Library, the Heritage Quilt Club, the Tuesday Study Club and the Jennings Book Club were her favorite.

Lynn died from cancer on July 13, 2024 and was cremated. Memorial gifts for the Jennings City Library or your local city library will be greatly appreciated.

Her husband, Warren L. Tacha; sister, Rilla A. Wolf; nieces, Kendra M. Kettler and Dr. Jennifer M. Zumsteg and husband, Brian, were very important in her life.

Raymond Duane Wait, 90, passed away on July 12, 2024 at his home in Norton, KS. Raymond was born on December 18, 1933 to Raymond W. Wait and Allie E. (Waas) Wait in Russell Springs, KS.

Raymond was raised in Sublette, KS and obtained his High School equivalency in 1955 after enlisting in the US Air Force as a Munitions technician where he served in Japan during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1954. Raymond married Barbara Wait on September 17, 1975 in Sublette, KS. From this marriage they had two children, Raymond and Angela. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and sewing. Raymond currently holds the Kansas State record for the largest saugeye and was awarded the Master Angler award for wiper.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara Wait; sister, Shirley Shotton, and brother, Charley Wait. He is survived by his son, Raymond (RD), his wife Rikki and their children: Rayanne, Jessi, Cody, and Alise all of Norton, KS; daughter, Angela Ndhlovu, her husband Panji and their children Malaika, Ethyn, and Samson (Jelani) of Topeka, KS and sister, Ardis Wait.

Raymond Duane Wait

Carolyn Sue Hunt, 79, passed away July 15, 2024 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

She was born February 16, 1945 in Larned, the daughter of Raymond and Margaret Wagaman Swartz.

A longtime area resident Carolyn was a daycare provider and later a mental health aide at Larned State Hospital. She was a member of First Christian Church and a volunteer at Pawnee County Humane Society, Larned Greenhouse, Christian Women Thrift Store, Larned State Hospital Greenhouse, and took pets to visit the nursing home. She was a longtime super fan of the KU Jayhawks and liked gardening, flowers, and animals. Carolyn loved spending time with her grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was known for always remembering birthdays with a card. She could often be found walking her dog at the pond or on her porch with friends. She was truly a devoted and loving wife, mom, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend.

On October 20, 1963 she married Dennis James Hunt at Macksville; he preceded her in death on January 10, 1992.

Survivors include: two sons, Michael Hunt, Garfield, Mark Hunt, Larned; daughter, Jamie (Mike) Mehl, Olathe; two brothers, Bob Swartz, Dodge City, Ron (Sarah) Swartz, Philippines; two grandchildren, Christopher (Allie) Mehl, Roeland Park, Garrett Mehl, Olathe; her dog, Precious, her cat, Princess, and her great grand dogs, Caboose and Ladle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Dennis R. (Denny) Hunt; three brothers, J.R. Swartz, Dick Swartz, Billy Swartz; two sisters, Virginia Shearrer and Betty Hood.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2024 at First Christian Church, Larned, with Pastor Damon Bradley presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 19, 2024 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with family present from 5-8 p.m. Following the service, inurnment will be in Larned Cemetery.

She was a longtime super fan of the KU Jayhawks and liked gardening, flowers, and animals. Carolyn loved spending time with her grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was known for always remembering birthdays with a card. She could often be found walking her dog at the pond or on her porch with friends. She was truly a devoted and loving wife, mom, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend.On October 20, 1963 she married Dennis James Hunt at Macksville; he preceded her in death on January 10, 1992.Survivors include: two sons, Michael Hunt, Garfield, Mark Hunt, Larned; daughter, Jamie (Mike) Mehl, Olathe; two brothers, Bob Swartz, Dodge City, Ron (Sarah) Swartz, Philippines; two grandchildren, Christopher (Allie) Mehl, Roeland Park, Garrett Mehl, Olathe; her dog, Precious, her cat, Princess, and her great grand dogs, Caboose and Ladle.She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Dennis R. Larned – Melba Lucille Woods, 95, passed away July 13, 2024 at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born March 4, 1929 in St. John, the daughter of Charles W. and Anna C. Schmer Schmidt.

An area resident since 1953, she was a hairdresser for forty-four years. She enjoyed attending numerous churches and was a member of First Christian Church, past member of Saints Mary and Martha of Bethany Episcopal Church and Escue Chapel CME Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Santa Fe Trail Center-Fort Larned Historical Society, and organized the Broadway Bells. A local philanthropist, she helped with the move of the Escue Church in 2006 to the Santa Fe Trail Center, in 2008 she built the Dale and Melba Woods Farm and Auto Museum, and in 2010 built the Dale and Melba Woods Fitness Center.

On December 31, 1952 she married Dale Woods at Tunica, Mississippi; he preceded her in death on December 28, 1998.

Survivors include: her loving family and her dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and three brothers, Warren Schmidt, Raymond Schmidt, and Edward Schmidt.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 19, 2024 at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Pastor Damon Bradley presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2024 at Beckwith Mortuary. Burial will be in Iuka Cemetery, Iuka.

Melba Lucille Woods

Edythe Breeding, age 100, of Hays, Kansas passed away peacefully Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Homestead Assisted Living of Hays.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Edythe was born December 13, 1923, in Hugoton, Kansas to Roscoe E. and Ethel V. (Light) Floyd.&nbsp; She was the second born of twins.&nbsp; Her twin brother, Ernest Wayne and&nbsp; Edythe were welcomed home by 3 sisters and 9 brothers.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Edythe grew up in Rolla and was a graduate of Rolla High School.&nbsp; While growing up, she worked at the Rolla drug store and then at the Rolla post office.&nbsp; After graduation, Edythe and two of her girlfriends traveled by train to Long Beach, California where they worked for the war effort in an airplane factory for a couple of years.&nbsp; They were “Rosie the Riveters”.&nbsp; Edythe’s boyfriend Ralph Edward Breeding served as a Navy Hell fighter pilot and a flight instructor.&nbsp; In 1944, Ralph and Edythe were married in Liberal, Kansas on October 31, while Ralph was on leave. When World War II was over, Edythe and Ralph returned to Morton County, Kansas to farm.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Ralph passed away in 1975. Edythe moved to Garden City in 1985 and married Harlow Brown on June 17, 1987. Edythe and Harlow moved to Sun City West, Arizona a few years later.&nbsp; Edythe was an avid golfer and played at least three times per week at Briarwood Country Club in Sun City West.&nbsp; She also loved to travel going on 7 cruises.&nbsp; In 2019, Edythe moved to Hays, Kansas to be near her daughter Susan.&nbsp; She lived at Garden Terrace independent living until she moved to Homestead Assisted Living in June 2024.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Edythe is survived by her daughter, Susan Rymph and husband, Bill, Ellis, KS; grandchildren, Kimberly Simmons; Kristina Cagle; Ryan Woods; Troy Rymph and wife, Savannah; Brett Shaffer and wife, Stephanie; 4 great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.

Edoline Jane Greene age 89 of Scottsdale, Arizona passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at the home of her daughter on Monday, June 10, 2024.&nbsp; She was born October 12, 1934, to Edward and Madoline Martin.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Edoline was best known for her devotion to family and having a witty personality.&nbsp; She always knew her friends by “whoever laughs at my jokes”. Though her personality was laughable and fun, she was a very deep, spiritual woman. &nbsp;Her love for the Word crossed over in her love for the French language, always reciting the Bible in French.

In addition, Edoline (Eddie) had a great love for ALL music, poetry and writing songs, Camelback Mountain, swimming and “the beach!”

&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She is survived by her three children, Andrew Greene; David Greene; and Teresa Pavelonis and husband, Joel; her grandchildren, Marci; Hunter; Madeline; &nbsp;Anna (Tanner); Audrey (Austin); Elle (Brendan); her great grandchildren, Anessa; Oliver; and Rhodes.

Mary Jane Kuhn age 93, of Victoria, Kansas passed away on Monday, July 15, 2024, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She was born January 23, 1931, on the family farm at Pfeifer, Kansas to Adam and Cecellia (Jacobs) Kisner.&nbsp; She married Francis Joseph Kuhn on August 22, 1950, at Pfeifer, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on August 5, 2016.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She was a homemaker and a member of The Basilica of Saint Fidelis.&nbsp; She grew up in Pfeifer, attended Pfeifer Grade School, and was a graduate of Schoenchen High School.

She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, word search books, and her yard work.&nbsp; She and her husband lived most of their lives in Topeka and moved back to Victoria in 2003.
