Carlyle Aron Thompson, Manhattan, Kansas, passed away on
Sunday, September 15, 2024, at the age of 88.&nbsp;
Carlyle (aka Carly to family and friends) was born on June 26, 1936, to
Marvin and Ora Thompson in Kansas City, KS.&nbsp; He was raised in Shawnee,
Kansas and graduated from Shawnee Mission High School.&nbsp; He participated in FFA and served as
president his senior year.&nbsp; He obtained
his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Soil Science and Plant Analysis from
Kansas State University in 1959.&nbsp; At KSU,
Carlyle met his wife, Sandra Jo Burge, and they married on June 7, 1959. &nbsp;They recently celebrated their 65th
wedding anniversary.

After living in Lincoln, NE and Lawton, OK, Carlyle and
Sandra settled in Hays, KS in 1963 where he worked for the KSU Agricultural
Research Center for 40 years.&nbsp; He performed
many studies on crops, soil analysis, tillage systems, and crop rotations on
plots.&nbsp; He developed narrow row planting
for sorghum and worked with many farmers.&nbsp;
He had a great love of planting vegetable gardens as well as judging
crops and vegetables at county fairs and the Kansas State Fair.

Carlyle had a love of music that he inherited from his
mother.&nbsp; Ora would play the piano or
organ and he would sing.&nbsp; He continued
singing throughout his life embracing the joy it would bring.&nbsp; He passed down his love of music to his
children and encouraged them as they grew. 

After his retirement, Carlyle and Sandra moved to Lenexa,
Kansas.&nbsp; He saw a need to start a food
pantry at the West Lenexa Seventh-Day Adventist Church and worked tirelessly
planning and gathering food to provide for those in need.&nbsp; After they moved to Manhattan, he volunteered
at the Senior Center for several years, again, helping people through their Friendship
Meals Program.

Carlyle’s faith in God was the most important part of his
life.&nbsp; He taught Sunday School at the
First United Methodist Church in Hays for many years.&nbsp; He was an elder in the West Lenexa
Seventh-Day Adventist Church and later the Manhattan Seventh-Day Adventist
Church where he enjoyed singing, preaching, and fellowship with the
congregants.&nbsp; 

Carlyle leaves behind his wife, Sandra and their children,
Curt (Glenda) of Hutchinson, KS, Lee Anne of Lawrence, KS, Chris of
Springfield, MO, Kent (Andrea) of Plano, TX and Rebecca (Tad) of Manhattan,
KS.&nbsp; He is also survived by his aunt,
Lois Flinn; sister-in law, Ann Ware; his five grandchildren, (Kyle, Laura,
Ella, Emery, and Evie); two great grandchildren (Nora and Molly) and many
cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother, Castle
Thompson; and his sister-in-law Joanne Thompson.

Visitation is planned for Monday, September 23, 2024, at
Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, Manhattan, KS, from 6:00 to 7:30
pm.&nbsp; His funeral will also be held at the
funeral home on Tuesday, September 24, at 10:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Flint Hills

Yvonne Edith (Hughes) Azeltine, 91, of Milan passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Ripley Crossing- Milan, Indiana. Yvonne was born on Friday, September 16, 1932, in London, England; daughter of Harold and Eva (DeOrnavol) Hughes. Yvonne married the love of her life, Robert M. Azeltine Sr., on December 20, 1952, and he preceded her in death on December 16, 1997. She was a very proud military spouse and had loving family members who were in support of the Army, Air Force and Navy.

Yvonne worked for over 20 years as a surgical technician at Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, Kansas. She later worked at Kruger Maddux Greenhouse in Sunman, Indiana. Yvonne had many friends and loved visiting and going places with them. Yvonne enjoyed dancing, knitting, crocheting, playing piano, gardening, playing board games, coloring, playing euchre, and refurbishing furniture. Most of all Yvonne cherished her loving family.

Yvonne will be missed by her sons Robert (Yvonne) Azeltine Jr. of Bunker Hill, West Virginia; LeRoy (Mary Lou) Azeltine of Overland Park, Kansas; James (Debbie) Azeltine of Leawood, Kansas; daughter Charlene (Patrick) Holland of Moores Hill, Indiana; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild

Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Eva Hughes; husband Robert M. Azeltine Sr.; sons Alan Azeltine, Frederick Azeltine, and Terry Azeltine; daughter Yvette Pryse; 4 brothers; and 5 sisters and her grandson Jasen Azeltine.

Yvonne will be laid to rest as her ashes are interred with her loving husband, Robert M. Azeltine at Gaylord cemetery on Saturday, October 12th at 1:00pm.

Memorials may be given in honor of Yvonne and Robert to Special Operations Wounded Warriors.

Barabara Sue Tweedy was born September 11, 1939, in Carrollton Missouri to Averill and Eleanor Gonder (Musick), and passed away August 14, 2024, in Smith Center, Kansas at the age of 84. She attended school in Phillipsburg, Kansas following the families move there when she was a child. On August 19th, 1956, she was united in marriage to Kenneth (Slick) Tweedy. To this union four children were born: Kenneth K., Kyle K., Kip K. and Kristal K.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Barbara was very active in her community volunteering to help wherever she could. Many remember her as their den mother, Sunday School teacher or simply as “Auntie Barb”. She was an honorary member of the infamous “Haggled Hags” and participated in numerous activities with this close-knit group over the years. In 1974 Barbara bought the local garden center that soon became Tweedy’s Plants, Pots &amp; Posies where she shared numerous life events with customers in the community.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Barb spent time in Nebraska before venturing to California where she met many wonderful friends and explored the beautiful state before returning to the Phillipsburg area. She then met her soulmate David Bolte and together they resided in Republican City for nearly 20 years. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents Averill and Eleanor Gonder, brother Charles (Butch) Gonder, daughter Brenda Molzahn and son Kyle Tweedy. Survivors include Dave Bolte of Alma, NE, sisters Patricia Cleveland of Webber, KS, Katheryn Gonder of Mankato, KS, children Kenneth Tweedy Jr., &amp; wife Julie, Kip Tweedy &amp; wife Ginger, all of Phillisburg KS, and Kristal Harper &amp; husband John of Plattsmouth, NE. She was most proud to be Gran B to her 19 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Barbara was many things to many people, but to most that she met she was a friend for life. Friends and family were the biggest part of her life, and she was rich beyond measure for this. She will be deeply missed.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; A celebration of life is planned for September 21st, 2024, at the Phillipsburg Armory from 3PM to 5PM. Memorials may be given to the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of the many Veterans in her family whom she loved, or the First Christian Church of Phillipsburg, KS where she worshipped and served for many years.

Barb Tweedy

Cheryl Lynn (Nay) Balls, age 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2024 surrounded by her family. Cheri was born on February 15, 1945 to Alva and Lela Nay of Glade, KS. She was an only child.

Cheri grew up on the farm in Glade. She loved to tell stories of riding her horse, Banner, and singing to the cows and chickens. Their home always held a lot of family gatherings. She went on to raise her own family with the same traditions, values, and morals.&nbsp;

Cheri married Tom Balls of Phillipsburg, KS on February 28, 1964. They made their home in Phillipsburg where they welcomed two children, Mike and Tami. Cheri went back to college and received her teaching degree in 1983. She taught for 30 years and loved all of her 3rd grade students. The impact she made on her many students over the years lives on today. She retired in 2005. To know Cheri was to love her. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and teacher.

Tom and Cheri loved to travel and enjoyed their many adventures including searching out and sampling the favorite local cuisine. Their dogs were well-traveled members of the family, treated to swimming in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico. Their animals were loved. Together, they made many happy memories from these adventures traveling from coast to coast, visiting forty-four of the fifty states of this great country.

Cheri was active in multiple clubs, led both the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and volunteered for several organizations that her children were involved in over the years. She was definitely a very present and involved parent!

She was an active and involved grandmother as well. She doted on and loved her grandkids. As she was able, she attended their various activities, sports events, and school programs. She traveled many places and miles and was their biggest supporter. She was always in the know of where her grandkids were at any time, putting everyone else first. As time went on and she was unable to physically attend events, she of course was still present by making provisions to be there through the use of technology.&nbsp;

Cheri was an amazing cook! She always made sure that at every family gathering, everyone had their favorite dish to enjoy. No one ever went hungry. She passed this love onto her kids and grandkids…they all love to cook and bake, and it’s all because of her.

Cheri didn’t forget or miss anything! She did everything for everyone else, and that is just a small part of what made her so special. She will be missed dearly by her family and those that have been touched by her love.&nbsp;

Cheri is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Tom, son Mike (Chris) Nay of Bennington, KS, and daughter Tami (Nick) Poels of Phillipsburg. She leaves behind her grandchildren Darren (Megan) Nay, Dani (Aaron) Bain, and Gabby and James Poels as well as great-grandchildren Emma Nay and Molly Nay (due in November). Cheri was preceded in death by her parents.

Cheri is going home. She will be laid to rest on the family farm in Glade, KS. As the matriarch of the family, she will be the first to be buried in the Nay family cemetery that’s just a stone’s throw away from the farmhouse where she grew up and the fields where she rode her horse. As the saying goes, “The best journey takes you home”.

A funeral service for Cheri Balls will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 20, 2024, at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, Kansas, with Pastor Ron Wedel officiating. Burial will follow at the Nay Family Cemetery.

Cheri will lie in state from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday and 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Phillips County Hospital.

Maryln Lee Boltin, 82, of Bunker Hill, Kansas, died on Friday, September 06, 2024, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

Maryln was born on May 07, 1942, in Kingman, Kansas, the daughter of Eugene and Elizabeth (Lord) Kaufman.&nbsp; She grew up in Kingman, Kansas, and graduated from Kingman High School in the class of 1960, and attended Pittsburg State University for 2 years.&nbsp; She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Arthur “Art” Boltin on August 25, 1963, in Kingman, Kansas.&nbsp; From this union Maryln and Art were blessed with two sons Shawn and Steve.&nbsp; She worked hard as a loving wife, mother and homemaker and worked as an operator with Southwestern Bell.&nbsp; She was a passionate artist that enjoyed painting, knitting and leather works and enjoyed teaching her skills to others.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren.

Surviving family include her husband Art of the home; son Shawn Boltin and wife Rosie of Black Forest, Colorado; daughter-in-law Melody of Russell, brothers Kenneth Kaufman and wife Neva of Boise, Idaho and Mike Kaufman and wife Peggy of Kingman, Kansas; sister Aletha Budig and husband Gene of Great Bend, Kansas and four grandchildren Daniella Cavaliere, Malachai, Isaac and Zeke Boltin.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son Steve Boltin.

Cremation has been selected by the family and a memorial service will be held at a later date.&nbsp; Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Janice Phipps of Goodland, Kansas passed away on September 12, 2024 at the age of 81. Janice was born November 19, 1942 in Benkelman, Nebraska to parents Iron and Ruby Mueller. Janice spent her childhood attending Bird City schools in Kansas. She told stories of tagging along with her mom and Grandma Elliott doing a variety of chores, including the putrid task of dressing chickens at Aunt B’s house. In high school she was active in band, playing the saxophone and leading the band as the drum major. Over the years, she commented multiple times wishing she could have had the opportunity to play women’s basketball, noting that she and multiple friends could’ve formed quite a squad. In addition, she would laugh noting how she blew her allowance buying records of her favorite entertainer, Elvis Presley.

Following her days at BCHS, she spent three years at the University of Oklahoma, graduating with a degree in education. After a short stint teaching at McDonald High School, she chose to return to college, completing a master’s degree in textiles from Colorado State University. Her newly attained degree provided her the opportunity to teach briefly at Northwest Missouri State in Marysville.

In 1970, she was united in marriage to Roger Phipps of Haigler, Nebraska. To this union, three children were born: Sloan, Torri, and Mariah. She forwent her career to raise her three children for the next twenty plus years. During these years, she taught sewing for 4-H, worked multiple hours in her rose garden, and attended virtually all of her kids’ activities. She also loved to gab with her friends, whether in person or on the telephone.

The late 1990s saw Janice move to Goodland where she recertified as a teacher and began substituting with a new found independence. She taught at Goodland and Brewster Public Schools. These were some of her happiest days. Once she stepped away from teaching, she began to travel the world. Having seen 70 plus countries, Turkey and Vietnam were atop her list.

At the time of her death, Janice continued to reside in her home in Goodland. Janice is survived by her children: Sloan (Hannah) Phipps of Kearney, Nebraska; Torri (Bart) Myers of Newton, Kansas; and Mariah (Chad) Fickbohm of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In addition, she leaves five beloved grandchildren: Owen, Murphey, Hollis, Elliott and Sydney. She is also survived by her sister, Vickie Thomas of Cheyenne, Wyoming and special neighbors Kendall and Jacque Cooper as well as Vickie White. Preceding her in death are her parents, Iron and Ruby Mueller.

Margie Beryl Stevens, age 90, passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on May 24, 1934, in Scott County, Kansas, the daughter of Brannon Burl &amp; Reba Catherine Walker Harkness. A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, she was a farmwife, nurse, and musician.

Margie played the organ and piano for dances and founded and led the Hit-n-Miss&nbsp;senior citizen band for more than 30 years. Margie was a 15-year-old graduate of Scott Community High School, Class President of the Class of 1950, a 4-H leader, VIP Center board member volunteer, and a member of the First Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On February 25, 1951, she married Herbert A. Stevens in Scott City, Kansas. He passed away on October 13, 2020, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her Two Sons - Rick Stevens of Scott City, Kansas, and Stacy Stevens of Colorado Springs, Colorado, One Daughter - Colette &amp; Steve Robinson of Vienna, Virginia, Daughter in law Ilene Stevens of Indianola, Iowa, Five Grandsons - Chandler &amp; Mara Stevens of St. Augustine, Florida, Corbin &amp; Heidi Stevens of Scott City, Kansas, Curtis &amp; Theresa Stevens of Minneapolis, Kansas, Sean Stevens of Atwood, Kansas, Seth Stevens of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Two Granddaughters – Cristalyn Kirchhoff of Smith Center, Kansas and Stefanie Stevens of Kansas City, Missouri, and sister Kathryn Maudlin of Chapin, South Carolina, and Twelve Great-Grandchildren.&nbsp;

Roy LeVern Acheson, 72, of Palco, Kansas, passed away at his home September 11, 2024. Born on January 13, 1952, in Quinter, Kansas, Roy was the fourth of five children born to LeVern and Loree (Wilds) Acheson. He was raised on the family farm south of Palco.

A 1971 graduate of Palco High School, Roy was an active participant in FFA, rodeo, theater, and band. His passion for the arts led him to Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana, where he studied drama with the aspirations of becoming a music or drama teacher. However, Roy’s journey led him back to the family farm.

Roy moved to the family homestead in 1986 and took over the cattle operation. He was known for training cattle dogs. He said about his border collies, “If you do a good job training them, you can be as lazy as you want to be!” His commitment to the ranch and family was evident throughout his life. Roy was married to Helen Walters for 26 years and was blessed with three children: Rolene, Richard, and David.

Faith played a central role in Roy’s life. He was actively involved with the Red Line Church of God, where he contributed to the youth group and other church activities. Roy was a talented cook who helped organize an annual outdoor cook-off. He was renowned for his famous biscuits and gravy, which were a staple in his children’s childhoods. They loved to give him a rating on each and every batch.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Loree and LeVern Acheson; his brother Charles Acheson and sister Melva Lee Pawley. He is survived by a sister, Mary Acheson of Rose Hill, a brother Carl Acheson and wife Cindy of Palco; his daughter Rolene Acheson of Hays; his two sons: Richard Acheson and wife Christy of Creede, Colorado, David and wife Tammie of Palco. He also leaves behind six cherished grandchildren: Blaine, Dylan, Marjorie, Braden, Aleena, and Colton.

Roy will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his commitment to his faith, love of history and his artistic talents. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Brett David Gartrell, of Stockton, KS, passed away on September 15, 2024, at his home in rural Rooks County, at the age of 40. He was born on February 3, 1984, in Phillipsburg, Kansas, to Gregg and Susan Gartrell, the second of their three children.

Brett attended school in Stockton where he was a member of the band and participated in track, cross country and basketball. Brett’s favorite sport was track where he ran at the state track meet as a sophomore and senior. Brett was also active in the Stockton FFA and the Mt. Pleasant 4-H Club, representing both organizations at the local, state, and national levels. A highlight of his high school years was participating in the school play, an interest he continued during his college years and again through the Stockton Arts Council theater productions. Brett also looked forward to the family’s annual backpacking trips to the mountains.

Following high school, Brett enrolled at Kansas State University, studying crop production and working both on and off campus jobs. One summer internship had him collecting and counting insects in Iowa. In 2008, Brett returned home to set up his bachelor’s quarters and began working with his parents on the farm. Although Brett was involved in all facets of farmwork, his favorite time of year was harvest. Many a college football game day was spent in the combine cab listening to the K-State Wildcats.

Brett was a member of the Stockton United Methodist Church where he attended local youth groups regularly. In Manhattan he was active in campus Christian organizations and was a member of the choir at the Grace Baptist Church. A person who tended to hide his talents under a basket, Brett liked giving gifts – flowers to his favorite ladies on Mother’s Day, tools for Dad on Father’s Day, or snacks to the nephews and nieces when they came for a visit. He enjoyed being with other people and was always up for a game of Phase 10, Fluxx or Stratego.

Brett is survived by his parents, Gregg and Susan Gartrell of Stockton; brother, Ethan (Rena) Gartrell of Basehor, KS; sister, Heather (Nathan) Mentzer of Colony, KS; nephews, Elijah and Case Mentzer and Spencer Gartrell; and nieces, Jeanie Mentzer and Guinevere Gartrell.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 20, 2024, at 2PM, at the Stockton Church of Restoration. Visitation will be held on Thursday 6-8pm, with the family receiving friends 6-7:30PM, at the funeral home in Stockton.

Wayne D. Nelson, 89, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

He was born December 13, 1934, in Sylvia, Kansas, the son of Clifford C. and Alice (Harmon) Nelson. He was a 1952 graduate of Nickerson High School, Nickerson, Kansas and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from the University of Kansas. He served in the U.S. Army from September 17, 1954 until being honorably discharged on September 14, 1956. &nbsp;Wayne began his banking career at Hutchinson National Bank, Hutchinson, Kansas, and later served as President of banks in Syracuse, Tribune, and Gorham, Kansas, retiring in October 31, 2009.

Summers were spent at the ballpark, coaching Joyce’s softball team, and coaching and officiating his sons’ games. He was also a Boy Scout leader, and a member of several civic organizations.&nbsp;Wayne married Joyce E. Paepke on December 28, 1958 in Arlington, Kansas. She survives in Topeka. Other survivors include three sons, Mike (Gwen) Nelson of Topeka, Scott (Deanne) Nelson Fishers, Indiana, and Tom (Julie) Nelson of Enid, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Paul (Brittany) Nelson, Haley (Travis) West, Lauren Nelson, Joshua Nelson and Gabrielle Nelson; four great-grandchildren, J.P. Nelson, Connor Nelson, Avery Nelson and Grayson West; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Carol and Glen Nelson.&nbsp;Wayne loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, and was an avid fan of the Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas City Royals and Chiefs, and Fort Hays State Tigers.

Honoring his request, cremation is planned. late Kenneth Brommer. &nbsp;Terina was a devoted mother to Kenneth “KJ”
Brommer, Joshua Brommer, Shelby Jackson and Melody Davis, as well as a
grandmother to Alexa Strutt, Rex Davis, Connor Binder, Rilee Davis, and Declan
Davis. &nbsp;They were her greatest accomplishments. &nbsp;She always said
their birth changed her life for the better, and they felt that in the love and
support she provided.
Terina took a special joy in planning family get-togethers, and had fond
memories of all the Christmas days she hosted at her house with all of her
family, especially her grand babies!
Terina is survived by her mother, Karen LaMastres, her children:&nbsp; KJ

Marlene June Harvey Wilmot, former resident of Norton, Greeley, and Elkhart, died at Brookdale Memory Care in Overland Park, Kansas, on September 13.

Marlene was born on November 10, 1933, in McCook, Nebraska, the only child of Freda Voigt Harvey and Lloyd John (LJ) Harvey. She graduated with the class of 1951 at Norton Community High School. On August 5, 1952, she married Bill Wilmot at the Norton United Methodist Church. They were blessed with two children, David Harvey and Janell Renea. David has a son, William Alexander Wilmot. Janell married Brad Ambrosier, and they have a daughter, Katherine Emily. Marlene was doing well in 2019 and was able to attend Katie's wedding in Boulder, Colorado, when she married Tyler Groves. Katie and Tyler have a daughter named after Marlene and Lloyd: Linden June (LJ) Groves.

Unlike many of her female peers of her time, Marlene was a working wife and mother. While Bill was in the Navy, she worked with the Credit Bureau and Chamber of Commerce of Newport, Rhode Island, and the Credit Bureau of Greater Boston, Massachusetts. When Bill's four years in the Navy were over, they returned to Norton where Marlene worked for ASCS and then Federal Crop Insurance while Bill worked in the same building for SCS. Marlene became the first Woman District Director in the nation. She was then transferred to Kansas City. She traveled to and from Washington DC. She spoke and trained others and was asked to be on a special committee of 5 chosen from across the nation.

After presenting to Con-Agra for FCIC in Greeley, Colorado, they offered her a job too good to refuse. They moved to Colorado and after a few years, ended up in private industry, beginning a business with another FCIC employee and close family friend. Bill transferred to SCS in Fort Morgan, Colorado, during those years.

Upon retirement, Marlene wrote three books: Bluff to Bluff; Bluff to Bluff, too; and Hardship Trail. Marlene, Bill, and Lloyd (who lived with them in Greeley) traveled all over in their motorhome selling the books and speaking about the Republican Valley flood, which the books are based on.

After Bill died from mesothelioma in 2000, Marlene and Lloyd remained in Greeley. Lloyd lived to be 106 with Marlene's care. When Lloyd passed away in 2011, Marlene lived part of the year in an apartment in Elkhart, Kansas. She traveled with Susie Maddy on cross-country adventures and a cruise. She also went on a cruise with Janell and Katie. In later years, Janell and Marlene would have "Moms' Weekends" and travel to visit Katie at K-State, KU, and then in Kansas City. They also enjoyed overnight shopping trips to Amarillo, Texas, and, in later years, big trips were outings to McDonald’s for a filet-o-fish sandwich in Guymon, Liberal, or Hugoton. At the beginning of the pandemic, Marlene sold her Greeley house and permanently moved to Elkhart where her doctors were located, and Janell could give her full-time care.

As Marlene's dementia progressed, a retired CNA helped when Janell was out of town. Hazel Sanchez was not just a caregiver; she became family. In April, Marlene was admitted to Morton County Hospital and was there for a month. It became apparent that she was no longer going to be able to stay at home. On May 1, she traveled with Janell, Hazel, and family friend Rosa to Overland Park, not far from Katie's home in Shawnee.

The Clare Bridge Program at Brookdale in Overland Park, Kansas, focuses on sustaining feelings of belonging and purpose while seeking to preserve a sense of self. The Clare Bridge concept has evolved by continually embracing current research and innovations in the delivery of quality dementia care. The beautiful facility is designed like a small community. Marlene made friends and enjoyed outings to restaurants and ice cream places, as well as to see the sights around Kansas City. The staff adored her, and she told them often how much she loved them and how grateful she was for all they did to take care of her. Because she was near Katie, Marlene was able to watch her great-granddaughter learn to crawl, walk, and “talk”. LJ thought Brookdale was a wonderful place to show off her skills during each visit.

Survivors include her children, David Wilmot (Susan) of Bryant, Arkansas, and Janell Ambrosier (Bradley) of Elkhart, Kansas; Grandchildren Alex Wilmot of Brattleboro, Vermont, and Katie Groves (Tyler) of Shawnee, Kansas; and great-granddaughter Linden June Groves.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1-2:00 pm Friday, September 20, 2024 at the funeral home. A Graveside Service will follow in the Norton Cemetery. She was born on February 25, 1935, in Lane County, Kansas, the daughter of Alvin and Cornelia (Bruner) Thon. She was a homemaker, farmer and rancher, Cub Scout leader, 4-H Project Leader and participated in the Church choir. She was a member of the Healy Methodist Church, Rebecca Lodge, and Cheyenne Country Club Swimming Pool. Delores enjoyed time with family and coffee with friends at Healy Oil. Her hobbies included reading, ceramics, crochet, cross-stitch, and rose and flower gardening. Camping and fishing at Cedar Bluff with Reece and the kids was a highlight of summers along with attending the kids’ sports activities. She adored watching and feeding the birds and squirrels in the backyard. On May 27, 1956, Delores married Reece William Roemer in Healy, Kansas.

She is survived by three sons, Vernon (Michelle) Roemer, of Gem, Kansas, Kenneth (Dana) Roemer, of Emporia, Kansas and Dennis (Janet) Roemer, of Edmond, Oklahoma; son-in-law Darryl Clinton, of Scott City, Kansas; brother, Larry (Ann) Thon, of Kansas City, Missouri; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Reece W. Roemer, daughter Virgina K. Clinton, and brother Clifford Thon.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the service at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 16, 2024, at the Healy Methodist Church in Healy, Kansas with Pastor Gil presiding. On May 27, 1956, Delores married Reece William Roemer in Healy, Kansas.She is survived by three sons, Vernon (Michelle) Roemer, of Gem, Kansas, Kenneth (Dana) Roemer, of Emporia, Kansas and Dennis (Janet) Roemer, of Edmond, Oklahoma; son-in-law Darryl Clinton, of Scott City, Kansas; brother, Larry (Ann) Thon, of Kansas City, Missouri; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband, Reece W. Roemer, daughter Virgina K. Her greatest love was being a mother to her three beautiful daughters and spending time with her family. She spent many evenings and weekends being a softball mama and loved watching her daughters excel. She was the best girl mom and loved every second of raising her family.

Kristy was preceded in death by her father, Ivan Mansholt, and her grandparents, Dean Atwood and Raymond and Maxine Mansholt. She is survived by her husband, Ryan Stewart, and their three daughters, Kourtney, Lynsey, and Rylee Stewart; her mother, Beverly Mansholt; two brothers, Christopher and Everett (Tiffany, Ryker, and Reed) Mansholt; and her grandmother, Audrey Atwood. She is also survived by a large and devoted extended family, including numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws who will deeply miss her.

On Monday, September 9, 2024, Evelyn Ann Kathryn Levin passed away peacefully at the age of 95. She was born November 8, 1928 to Carl and Martha (Henkel) Grauerholz at their home located NW of Kensington, Kansas.

Evelyn was baptized and confirmed into St. John’s Lutheran Church, Kensington, KS.

As the oldest of three girls, Evelyn quickly stepped into the role of her Dad’s “farm hand” and her mother’s “helper around the house”.

She would tell stories of living in the Rock House she grew up in and attending the Grauerholz Country School No. 53 through the Eighth grade.

She started her freshman year at Kensington High School, graduating in 1946. While there she met classmates Alice (Brunow) Rietzke and Eulonda (Dettmer) Hagman. These three ladies became lifelong friends.

While in high school Evelyn met a bold young man they called “Tarzan” Levin. It was not love at first sight, but Tarzan was very persistent and ardently courted young Evelyn. After nine months of dating he approached her father and asked for her hand in marriage. They were married July 1, 1945, right in the middle of wheat harvest! The honeymoon was postponed until harvest was over. Evelyn and Arnold “Tarzan” spent 62 years together. They raised seven children, worked side by side in partnership, traveled the world, and made many lifelong friends.

Throughout her life Evelyn embodied two things, the love for her Lord and the love of her family. She did not know a stranger, but welcomed them into her home to share a cup of coffee and listen to their story. She led by example, sharing her love of the Lord with family and friends. Evelyn made her family feel that each one of them was important to her and she took the time to listen to them and celebrate with them. She attended their baptisms, confirmations, birthdays, graduations, weddings and any celebration that brought family together.

Evelyn was an active member of First St. John Lutheran Church in Kensington. She taught Sunday school, confirmation classes and enjoyed teaching and helping with Vacation bible school. She and Arnold were great supporters of the church’s youth group.

Evelyn leaves behind to celebrate her life her children Alan and Jan Levin of Tucson, AZ, Otto and fiancée Cheryl Foreman, Steve and Deb Levin all of Kensington, Carol and Alan Erick of Dallas, TX, Jeff and Mickie Levin of Athol, KS, Pam and Jeff Thompson of Paola, KS and John and Kim Levin of Tucson, AZ, 41 Grandchildren, 50 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great-Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Arnold (Tarzan), son James Arden, sisters Ruby Schreiber and Irma Sheley, brothers’ in-law Paul Schreiber, Don Sheley, Ivan Levin and Ted Levin, sister in-law Ruth (Ted) Levin and daughter in-law Cheryl Levin.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Bill Dugan of Artesia, NM. After Charlene graduated from Alton High School in 1955, she went on to earn her Associate’s degree from Brown Mackie College of Business. On June 2, 1957 she was married to Robert Hyde in Osborne, KS.

After retiring from bookkeeping in 1999 she and Bob returned to Osborne, KS to live near family. Charlene always had a knack for making everyone feel loved, often through her amazing meals and special desserts. She is survived by her husband, Bob, and 4 children: Mike Hyde of Littleton, CO; Deb Serna of Osborne, KS; Linda French of Osborne, KS; Jeff Hyde of Denver, CO; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 </figure>Cheryl Lynn (Nay) Balls, age 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2024 surrounded by her family. Cheri was born on February 15, 1945 to Alva and Lela Nay of Glade, KS. She was an only child.Cheri grew up on the farm in Glade. She loved to tell stories of riding her horse, Banner, and singing to the cows and chickens. Their home always held a lot of family gatherings. She went on to raise her own family with the same traditions, values, and morals.&nbsp;Cheri married Tom Balls of Phillipsburg, KS on February 28, 1964. They made their home in Phillipsburg where they welcomed two children, Mike and Tami. Cheri went back to college and received her teaching degree in 1983. She taught for 30 years and loved all of her 3rd grade students. The impact she made on her many students over the years lives on today. She retired in 2005. To know Cheri was to love her. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and teacher.Tom and Cheri loved to travel and enjoyed their many adventures including searching out and sampling the favorite local cuisine. Their dogs were well-traveled members of the family, treated to swimming in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico. Their animals were loved. Together, they made many happy memories from these adventures traveling from coast to coast, visiting forty-four of the fifty states of this great country.Cheri was active in multiple clubs, led both the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and volunteered for several organizations that her children were involved in over the years. She was definitely a very present and involved parent!She was an active and involved grandmother as well. She doted on and loved her grandkids. As she was able, she attended their various activities, sports events, and school programs. She traveled many places and miles and was their biggest supporter. She was always in the know of where her grandkids were at any time, putting everyone else first. As time went on and she was unable to physically attend events, she of course was still present by making provisions to be there through the use of technology.&nbsp;Cheri was an amazing cook! She always made sure that at every family gathering, everyone had their favorite dish to enjoy. No one ever went hungry. She passed this love onto her kids and grandkids…they all love to cook and bake, and it’s all because of her.Cheri didn’t forget or miss anything! She did everything for everyone else, and that is just a small part of what made her so special. She will be missed dearly by her family and those that have been touched by her love.&nbsp;Cheri is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Tom, son Mike (Chris) Nay of Bennington, KS, and daughter Tami (Nick) Poels of Phillipsburg. She leaves behind her grandchildren Darren (Megan) Nay, Dani (Aaron) Bain, and Gabby and James Poels as well as great-grandchildren Emma Nay and Molly Nay (due in November). Cheri was preceded in death by her parents.Cheri is going home. She will be laid to rest on the family farm in Glade, KS. As the matriarch of the family, she will be the first to be buried in the Nay family cemetery that’s just a stone’s throw away from the farmhouse where she grew up and the fields where she rode her horse. Terina Sue Brommer, 53, of Oakley, Kansas, passed away from cancer on September 11, 2024, at her home, leaving a void her family cannot fill.

She was born December 2, 1970 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Karen LaMastres and the late Kenneth Brommer. &nbsp;Terina was a devoted mother to Kenneth “KJ” Brommer, Joshua Brommer, Shelby Jackson and Melody Davis, as well as a grandmother to Alexa Strutt, Rex Davis, Connor Binder, Rilee Davis, and Declan Davis. &nbsp;They were her greatest accomplishments. &nbsp;She always said their birth changed her life for the better, and they felt that in the love and support she provided.

Terina took a special joy in planning family get-togethers, and had fond memories of all the Christmas days she hosted at her house with all of her family, especially her grand babies!

Roy was a farmer and rancher. He enjoyed his cows and chickens. &nbsp;He married Frances Kay Raskopf on October 4, 1961, in LaCrosse, Kansas. &nbsp;

Roy Allen Pfaff

Joshua Vincent Hrabe passed away on September 12, 2024, at his home in Plainville, KS, at the age of 38. He was born on September 8, 1986, to Ronald and Raina (Mongeau) Hrabe in Plainville. He married Terri Kenney on September 17, 2011, in Plainville. They were blessed with three children: Jarron, Annabella and Blake.

Josh graduated from Plainville High School with the class of 2005, and attended NCK Technical College, in the electrical department. He grew up with a love for the land and a strong work ethic. As a farmer and rancher for Rock’n R Angus and Bar H Cattle, he maintained the farm with the same care and devotion he showed to his loved ones. His commitment to his profession was matched by his enthusiasm for his hobbies and interests.

Josh’s joy in life extended well beyond the farm. He was an avid baseball fan and cherished his time coaching his kids’ and youth teams in baseball and football, sharing his love for the sport. Josh also found joy in race car driving (always stating there was nothing he couldn’t drive or drive fast, earning him Plainville Lake Champion Mud Runner), hunting, fishing, and engaging in Bible studies, which provided him with spiritual strength and community. Josh’s greatest joy was spending time with his kids, whether it was playing video games, or simply enjoying their laughter and love.

Above all, Josh was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, Terri and their three young children, Jarron Vincent, Annabella Renae, and Blake Michael all of the home in Plainville; parents, Ronald and Raina Hrabe of Plainville; siblings, Tracey (Josh) Post of Great Bend, KS and Julie (Sandon) Slaubaugh of Hays, KS; grandmothers, Kirby Mongeau and Karleen Hrabe; nieces and nephews, Ryleigh, Halle, Camdyn, Fletcher, Elijah, Savanah, Leilah, Jessah (Josh’s “Darrel”), Ethan, Averie, and Van; and great-niece, Nova Rae.

He is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Roger Mongeau and Ronald Hrabe, and infant son, Jaden Vincent Hrabe.

Josh’s presence will be deeply missed by his family, who remember him as a loving and supportive husband, father, and friend. His spirit, kindness, and passion for life will be remembered. May his memory serve as a reminder of the beauty of living fully, loving deeply, and supporting one another through life’s challenges.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 20, 2024, at 10:30AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be on Thursday, 6-8PM with a Vigil and Rosary Service at 7PM at the Church.

 </figure>Joshua Vincent Hrabe passed away on September 12, 2024, at his home in Plainville, KS, at the age of 38. He was born on September 8, 1986, to Ronald and Raina (Mongeau) Hrabe in Plainville. He married Terri Kenney on September 17, 2011, in Plainville. They were blessed with three children: Jarron, Annabella and Blake.Josh graduated from Plainville High School with the class of 2005, and attended NCK Technical College, in the electrical department. He grew up with a love for the land and a strong work ethic. As a farmer and rancher for Rock’n R Angus and Bar H Cattle, he maintained the farm with the same care and devotion he showed to his loved ones. His commitment to his profession was matched by his enthusiasm for his hobbies and interests.Josh’s joy in life extended well beyond the farm. He was an avid baseball fan and cherished his time coaching his kids’ and youth teams in baseball and football, sharing his love for the sport. Josh also found joy in race car driving (always stating there was nothing he couldn’t drive or drive fast, earning him Plainville Lake Champion Mud Runner), hunting, fishing, and engaging in Bible studies, which provided him with spiritual strength and community. Josh’s greatest joy was spending time with his kids, whether it was playing video games, or simply enjoying their laughter and love.Above all, Josh was a devoted family man. Donald E. Lang, age 77 years, formerly of Great Bend, Kansas passed away at Life Care Center in Burlington, Kansas on Monday evening, September 9, 2024.&nbsp; Don was born on January 9, 1947 at Great Bend to William “Otto” and Mary (Rider) Lang, and graduated from Great Bend High School in 1965.&nbsp; He served in the US Navy from January 1966 to November 1968 aboard the USS Bennington in the Pacific during the Vietnam era.&nbsp; He started Lang’s Electric as a Master Electrician in 1983 and also worked for Great Bend USD428 for over 20 years, retiring in 2012.&nbsp; Don was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1127 in Great Bend, and was a longtime member of the Church of the Nazarene in Great Bend.&nbsp; He enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, wildlife photography, and hiking and walking.

Donald Lang, age 77

Wichita, KS - Irene was born on July 14, 1929, to Jacob and Bertha (Kohn) Schukman at their home 5 miles north of Hays, Kansas. She married Walter Leiker on February 5, 1951, in Hays. They celebrated 32 years together before he died in 1983. They had two children, Jen Ellen Nash (Walt) and Michelle Wessling Fisher (David, Rollie).

After her children were born, she attended Crum’s Beauty School in Manhattan, Kansas. Shortly after her graduation, the family returned to Hays and she started her own business, Irene’s Beauty Salon, first in their home, then in the Centennial Shopping Center. She made many good friends throughout her 50 years of business. Without realizing it, she was ahead of her time and served as a model for her daughters that women could be “the boss” and “the owner” and they could grow up to be anything they wanted.

She was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic church in Hays, and served on the Parish Activities Committee for many years. She was involved in baking for, hosting, and planning many receptions and social gatherings.

After retiring, she moved to Wichita in 2009 to be closer to her daughters. She became an active member of the Orchard Park Senior Center and served on the planning committee there while making dear friends.

She was a prayer warrior for many people over the years. Her daily routine was to spend several hours praying for the special intentions people brought to her. She always ended her prayers with her own special intention, “for everyone on my prayer list, and those who have no one to pray for them.”

Whenever someone asked her to pray for someone, she asked for the person’s name, as she wanted the prayers to be personal. She never stopped praying for anyone until told she could, or that all was well.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, her daughter, Jen Ellen, parents Jacob and Bertha (Kohn) Schukman, one sister, Virginia Schwartz, and 6 brothers, Marcellus, James, Chuck, Edward, Ralph, and Jacob Jr. She is survived by her daughter Michelle, heart-chosen grandchildren Mariana Sarur and Hector Morales (Oklahoma City, OK), step-grandchildren Jennifer Fisher Vanourney (Sam) (St. Joseph, MO) and Matt Fisher (Kansas City, MO), and great-grandson Ron Vanourney, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. She is also survived by friends as dear as family who helped ensure her health and happiness until the end of her life, Denis and Barb Pianalto (Wichita), Erica Perez (Wichita), Julienne Corr (Wichita), Maggie Denning and Tom Wasinger (Hays), and Susan Smith (Mesa, AZ).

A memorial service led by her nephew, the Reverend Roger Schwartz of Augusta, Georgia, will be held at Downing &amp; Lahey West Mortuary, 10515 W. Maple in Wichita, KS at 7:00 pm, Thursday, September 19, 2024.

A burial service will be at 1:00 pm, Friday, September 20, at Hays Memorial Chapel, 1906 Pine Street, Hays, KS with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
