Rylan John Whitmer, of Wilson, KS, passed away on June 29, 2024, in Salina, KS, at the age of 22. He was born in Hays, KS on October 11, 2001, and adopted at age four to Terry and Debbie (Florian) Whitmer in Ellsworth, KS.

After graduating from Sowers Alternative School in Wichita in 2020, Rylan worked at Five Guys in Salina for awhile and helped many friends and family with various construction jobs. When he was younger, he worked at Grandma’s Soda Shop in Wilson. He was an avid Denver Broncos fan and very rarely missed a game on TV. He loved to go fishing with Grandpa - and Grandma when she would tag along. Rylan was a good friend to everyone. His idea that “friends don’t snitch on friends” landed him in trouble too many times!

Rylan is survived by his parents, Terry and Debbie Whitmer; brothers, Timothy Whitmer of Kansas City, KS, Bryson Parson of Ellis, KS, Cristian Weilert of Hays, KS, and Jesse Whitmer of Russell, KS; sisters, Tammy Endsley of Wilson and Tiffny Whitmer of Wilson; and many cousins.

Preceding Rylan in death is his brother-in-law, Gary Endsley.

Donald “Don” Victor Peterka, of Wilson, KS, passed away on July 1, 2024, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS, at the age of 83. He was born at his childhood home on September 3, 1940, to Victor and Theresa (Farney) Peterka in Lincoln County, KS. He married Alice Schmidtberger on June 4, 1966, at St. Fidelis Catholic Church in Victoria, KS.

Don grew up in Wilson and attended the Margaret one room schoolhouse through elementary school. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1958. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1962. Don worked as a welder for the Ellsworth Highway Department, farmer, and in the oil field for a few years.

Don was an American Legion Commander for 7 years and led the rosary at the nursing home monthly for 14 years for St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. He enjoyed track and field, KU Jayhawks, and helping with Wilson Boy Scouts for many years.

Don is survived by his wife, Alice of the home in Wilson; son, Joe (Ann) Peterka of Mansfield, TX; siblings, JoAnn Steinle of Wilson, Loyola Anschutz of Wilson, and Kathleen Merkel of Russell, KS; two grandchildren, Allison and Kate; and one great-grandson, Beau.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Theresa; and siblings, Elaine Shaw and Eugene Peterka.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at 10AM at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson. Burial will follow at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, 6-8PM with a Vigil and Rosary Service at 7PM at the funeral home in Wilson.

Randall E. Sellers, age 71, died, at his home, in rural WaKeeney, Kansas on June 25, 2024. &nbsp;He was born on February 12, 1953, in Hays, Kansas the son of Douglas and Gladys (Schemm) Sellers.

Randy was a 1971 graduate of Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio, and studied Mechanical Drafting at ITT Technical Institute. He worked for many years at Roush Performance in Livonia, Michigan as a machine operator cutting and designing metal dyes until he retired in 2015.

Randy is survived by his sons, Christopher Sellers and his wife, Ashley, of Olathe, Kansas and John Sellers and his wife, Autumn, of Howell, Michigan; his three daughters, Angela Sellers, Indianapolis, Indiana, Ashley Sellers and her fiancé, Ryan Thomas of Indianapolis, and Danielle Berry and her husband, Jace, of Howell, Michigan; two grandchildren, Gwyndolyn and Nathan Sellers and one on the way; and one brother, Mike Sellers and his wife, Betty of Miamisburg, Ohio.

Memorial services will be held at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney, Kansas, on July 9th, 2024, at 10:30 a.m.

Sharon Kay Patterson, age 80, died on June 28, 2024, at the Swedish Medical Center, Englewood, Colorado. &nbsp;She was born on June 2, 1944, in rural Trego County, Kansas the daughter of Lawrence and Elba (Ross) Berry.

Sharon married Theodore Patterson on March 10, 1960, in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Together, they raised their four sons in Quinter. Sharon worked for her parents in the family restaurant in Quinter and she was also well known as the lunch lady in the Quinter High School. &nbsp;She later worked as a custodian for the Quinter Brethren Church and Golden Plains Credit Union. &nbsp;She was a member of the Quinter United Methodist Church and a former Ladies Auxiliary President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Arie #3774, WaKeeney. &nbsp;Her favorite pastime was bowling in local leagues and state bowling tournaments, but she loved to watch her boys’ and her grandchildren’s athletic events and spend time with family and going on family vacations. &nbsp;Sharon will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Margaret Louise AraSmith, 90, of Hartford City, IN, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at her home. She was born in Logan County, KS to Clifford and Ula (Logsden) McGuire on April 2, 1934.

Margaret married William Arasmith on April 10, 1950, in Densmore, KS and the two spent many happy years together until William’s passing.In her younger years Margaret was an Elementary School teacher. During her years as a teacher, she was very involved with her students, coaching both the girls’ 7th and 8th grade basketball team as well as the gymnastics team, winning two large gymnastic competitions. She loved to help children and in later life she continued this through her involvement in the Kids Club in Rexford as well as Bible School. Magaret loved to help people which led to her working as a CMA in the home health care industry as well. She was a woman of many talents and had several hobbies, playing piano, painting, decorating cakes and singing to name just a few. She was a member of the Rexford Community Church for many years as well as the Red Barn Gang.

Margarets favorite thing was her family and she will be sadly missed by her children, Linda I. (Byron Chase) AraSmith-Chase of Hartford City, IN, Patrick L. AraSmith of Goodland, KS and Amanda L. &nbsp;Phyllis Lynn Bliss, 70, of Sharon Springs, died Friday, June 28, 2024, in Tribune, KS. She was born March 25, 1954, in Oakley, KS, to George and Dorothy (Russell) Burris. Phyllis grew up in Wallace, KS, attending school there through the 8th grade. She then went to Sharon Springs High School and graduated with the class of 1972. On April 25, 1982, Phyllis married Charles Bliss, in Wallace. Phyllis enjoyed doing arts and crafts, making jewelry and watching rodeos, especially the bull riding. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and attending all their children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Leon Burris, Joyce Penka and Gerald Russell and brothers-in-law, Jim Baehler and Glenn Kendall.

She is survived by her husband Charles, of Sharon Springs; children, Klee (Ronda) Jones, of Garden City, KS and Lance Jones of Smith Center; step-children, Chandra Bliss Parker, of Holyoke, CO and Devin Bliss of Hawkins, TX; sisters, Melba Baehler and Nelda Marsh; twelve grandchildren; one great grandchild, with two more on the way, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Phyllis Lynn Bliss

Edward Ray Fringer, 58, of Menlo, KS, died Wednesday, June 26, 2024. He was born on December 23, 1965, in Oberlin, KS, to Larry and Kathleen Ann (Gibson) Fringer. Ed grew up in Hoxie, KS and attended Hoxie schools, graduating in 1985.

Between his Junior and Senior years in high school Ed joined the National Guard. After graduating he completed Advanced Individual Training and then was stationed in Germany for four years. There he met Carmen Herrmann and the two were married on August 11, 1990. Ed served in the National Guard for 21 years and was active in the Gulf War, Desert Storm and the Iraq War. After the service, Ed worked for NA Timmerman Feeding.

In his free time, Ed enjoyed watching wrestling, rodeos, dirt track car races, the Kansas City Chiefs and western movies. He also enjoyed reading westerns and putting together model cars and puzzles.

Ed was preceded in death by his father Larry L. Fringer and great nephew Landon Fringer.

He is survived by his wife Carmen Fringer; children, Jacklyn Fringer, Emmy Marie (Justin) Heikes, Leeann Fringer, Cody Fringer and Montana Fringer; mother Kathleen Ann Fringer; brother Daniel (Cynthia) Fringer; sister Debra (Tyler) Hudson and five grandchildren.A graveside service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2024, at the Oberlin Cemetery, Oberlin, KS, followed by lunch at the Gathering Place, Colby, KS. After graduating he completed Advanced Individual Training and then was stationed in Germany for four years. There he met Carmen Herrmann and the two were married on August 11, 1990. Ed served in the National Guard for 21 years and was active in the Gulf War, Desert Storm and the Iraq War. After the service, Ed worked for NA Timmerman Feeding.In his free time, Ed enjoyed watching wrestling, rodeos, dirt track car races, the Kansas City Chiefs and western movies. He also enjoyed reading westerns and putting together model cars and puzzles.Ed was preceded in death by his father Larry L. Joseph Raymond “Joe” Bussen, 56, passed away July 1, 2024, at University of Kansas Health System in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born February 20, 1968, in Red Cloud, Nebraska, to Gary Dorman and Susan Kennedy. He was soon adopted by Raymond Theodore and Shirley Rose (Leiker) Bussen.&nbsp;

After graduating from Sharon Springs High School, Joe went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in industrial arts from Fort Hays State University. He married Suzanne Commerford on June 13, 1992, in Great Bend, and in 2000, made Great Bend their home.&nbsp;

Joe never had idle hands and opened Joe’s Wood Design in Hoisington where he enjoyed doing home remodels and woodworking. He loved to set up at events with Joe’s Grill and serve the public, alongside his family, with amazing food. He was an engineer at heart and loved to tinker with what one man thought was junk, Joe recreated into treasure. He most recently was given the opportunity to initiate his farming endeavors and had prosperous plans. Growing up, Joe was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Sharon Springs, Kan., and currently a member of Prince of Peace Parish, Great Bend, Knights of Columbus, and attended St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, Kan.&nbsp;

Survivors include his beloved wife of 32 years, Suzanne; son, Kyle Bussen and fiancée Sarah of Basehor; daughter, Rachel Bussen of Hutchinson; a grandchild to arrive Oct. 31; biological grandfather, Jim Dorman of Salina; brothers, Brian Bussen of Denver, Colo., Doug Dorman (April) of Clay Center, Matt Dorman (Nicole) of Abilene; three sisters; Rhonda Winkler (Greg) of Hutchinson, Julie Bussen of Baltimore, Md., Celeste Rains (Mike) of Oakley; sister-in-law Deanna Bussen; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Kellye Russell Hart, age 96, born May 1, 1928, at Rush Springs, OK, was the eleventh of twelve children born to John William and Christina (Sperling) Hart. He died on July 1, 2024, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, KS.

He attended public schools in Comanche County, OK, graduating in 1946 from Geronimo High School. After high school, he served in the US Army and upon discharge, attended Cameron College in Lawton, OK and Central State College in Edmond OK, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in business education. He worked in finance at Fort Sill, OK, for two and half years before accepting a teaching position in McCracken, KS, in 1953. While teaching at McCracken, Kellye earned his master’s degree in school administration at Fort Hays State University. He served as high school principal at Lorraine and Kanopolis, and as superintendent at Ellsworth, Lakin, and Ell-Saline, KS school districts.

Kellye retired in 1992 and he and his wife, Diana, moved to Ulysses to be near their grandchildren. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ulysses, Ulysses Masonic Lodge No. 435, the Kansas Ornithological Society, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and was a life member of the National Education Association and American Legion Post No. 79. After his retirement, he refinished furniture, coordinated the local American Red Cross blood drives for 15 years, helped with Ulysses wildflower tours and was a birder and compiler for the Ulysses Christmas Bird Counts.

Kellye and Diana Walker were married June 14, 1958, in La Crosse, KS. He is survived by his wife, Diana; son, Gary and wife Barb of Ulysses; daughter, Sherri of Hutchinson; granddaughter, Leslie Lorlovick and husband Derek of Oklahoma City; grandson, Charles of Ulysses and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and six brothers.

Pat married Bill Daugherty on September 6, 1953, and to this union, Kathi Sue, William Douglass and Raelynn were born. Pat proudly bragged about her 5 grandchildren (Holli, Kalen, Craig, Jordan, and Keri) and 10 Great-grandchildren (Matti, Micah, Marcus, Kathryn, Jullianne, Jameson, Leland, Rourke, Eleanor, and Solal.

Pat loved cats. There were always one or two cats in the house. Her last cat named Trouble moved to the nursing home with her and Bill. Rarely was there a time when Pat wasn’t sewing or embroidering. She enjoyed sewing gifts for family and friends. Pat loved playing games of all kinds but enjoyed winning even more. Pat was a 50 plus year member of PEO.

Pat is survived by her son Doug and wife Sheri of West Melbourne, Florida, Son-in-Law Steve Sullivan of Lakin, Kansas and all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bill and daughters, Kathi and Raelynn.

Kolten Joseph Schmidt passed away on June 26th, 2024 at 28 years old. Kolten was born on March 19, 1996 in a small town in Kansas where he was raised until he and his family moved to Colorado when he was 7. He was the baby from a family of 5 and embraced all the roles that come along with being the youngest: a source of endless entertainment, always forced to share, and gracefully losing games (It must be tough having two older sisters). As a kid he enjoyed a range of activities including wrestling, playing catch, swimming, being outside, and, of course, playing video games. His goofy humor and silliness was the life of every gathering, and he was never afraid to get embarrassed if it meant he could make you laugh.

Kolten graduated from Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs and quickly applied his skills to various jobs that he was so proud of. He started out in landscaping, then moved on to try his hand at being a cook, after that he worked for a gameroom design center where he got to travel around Colorado. He was a hardworking, blue collar man who wasn’t afraid to take on a new challenge.

Kolten was an avid adventure seeker. If you knew Kolten, you know he was always up for anything, except for trying new foods; he knew what he liked! He was a cinema enthusiast and could convince you to watch almost anything. He loved hiking through the beautiful outdoors of Colorado with his four legged, German Shepherd side-kick, Sadie. Kolten never turned down a game of chess, and he rarely lost, but if you ask his sister she’d tell you “no, it was a draw”. He was the type of person that never missed a phone call and was willing to drop everything to help anyone.

To say “Kolten will be missed” is an understatement. His memory will be forever cherished by those who survive him: his loving girlfriend, Jessica; his proud father, Kevin; his nurturing mother, Kaylene; his two older sisters, Kristina and Kandace; and his two grandpas, Harry Schmidt and Adolph Flax. Kolten was preceded in death by both of his grandmas; Mary Ann Flax and Mary Ann (Annie) Schmidt. James Floyd “Jim” Depperschmidt, 65, Liebenthal, Kansas, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2024, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.

James was born November 20, 1958, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Vincent and Stevana (Weigel) Depperschmidt. He was a lifelong resident of Liebenthal, Kansas. A graduate of Hays High School, Hays, Kansas, he was a maintenance person at the Rush County Courthouse, La Crosse, Kansas, before his retirement.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas, and a member of Knights of Columbus Council #2970, La Crosse, Kansas.

Survivors include: one brother, Raymond Depperschmidt, Liebenthal, Kansas; two sisters, Rita Oborny (John), Rush Center, Kansas, and Cora Knipp (Jerry), Victoria, Kansas; eight nephews; seven nieces; numerous great nephews and nieces; and one sister in law, Mary Ann Depperschmidt, Wichita, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Leroy Depperschmidt, and Lonnie Depperschmidt.

Visitation will be Friday, July 5, 2024, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M.

Church visitation will be Saturday, July 6, 2024, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:50 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Saturday, July 6, 2024, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas, with Father Stephen Dabanka officiating. Interment will be in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Liebenthal, Kansas.

David Francis “Cooter” Kroeger, age 72, of Hays, Kansas passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at his home. He fought a long ten year battle with his lung cancer.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He was born December 2, 1951, in Hays to Joseph J. and Margaret (Wasinger) Kroeger.&nbsp; He married LeAnne (Hoffman) on June 3, 1988, in Hays.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; David was a truck driver for over 40 years and before he retired the last eight years he hauled fuel for the Cerv’s Convenience Stores.&nbsp; He grew up and attended school in Ellis, Kansas, moved to Hays in 1977, and attended the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.&nbsp; He was a veteran of the US Navy serving in&nbsp; the Vietnam War.&nbsp; He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson, playing softball for Club 3, golfing, and having a beer with his friends.&nbsp; He had an immense love for his family and his two grand kids.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; David is survived by his wife, LeAnne, of the home; his daughter, Janae Atkerson and husband, Craig, Hays, KS; his grandchildren, Rylee and Reanna Atkerson; his sisters-in-law, Linda Kroeger, Lawrence, KS; and Paula Kroeger, Hays, KS.

Julius J. “Jules” Engel, Jr. (Sonny), 80, Hays, died Monday, July 1, 2024 at HaysMed.

He was born June 28, 1944 in Hays, the son of Julius J. “Lefty” and Virginia “Chink” (Younger) Engel. In 1962, he graduated from Hays High School. Jules was in the U.S. Army, serving in Fort Hood, Texas where he was a cook and part of the 995th Maintenance Company activated for the Vietnam War. He worked at Houston Tires Inc., James Motor Company, and the Service Department with the City of Hays, proudly working as a third-generation street sweeper. Jules enjoyed Monday lunch with his son, was known for always wearing wild colored Converse shoes, and was an avid sports fan who especially enjoyed watching baseball and the Denver Broncos. With a passion for the game of golf he was proud to have made a hole-in-one at Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course. Jules was a member of Fort Hays Sr. Men’s Golf Association, Hays VFW Post #9076, and for many years honored veterans as a member of the VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard.

Survivors include his sons, Scott Engel (Geri) and Bobby Engel (Alicia Smith) all of Hays, a brother, Francis “Butch” Engel (Linda) of Hays, a sister, Anita Kreutzer of Denver, CO, one grandson, Tyler Engel, two step-grandchildren, Logan and Madison Key, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Phyllis Fike.

Private funeral services will be at Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to the VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard. Charles Hille, age 89, of WaKeeney, KS, passed on to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney with family by his side. He was born on Nov. 9, 1934, in Hays, KS., the son of Henry and Josephine (Krhut) Hille.

Charles graduated from Trego Community High School in 1952. Following a short stint at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS, to play football, Charles returned to WaKeeney to marry his High School sweetheart Darlene Folkers on December 27, 1953. They resided on the Hille ranch where they raised their 4 children. Charles and Darlene celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Charles dedicated his entire life to the family’s Quarter Circle O Ranch where he was committed to preserving the family heritage of ranching and farming. Charles loved being a cattleman and farmer. He was a lifelong member of WaKeeney Presbyterian Church and a believer in Jesus.

Charles enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, building/flying model airplanes and cheering on K State Wildcats. Most of all though, he enjoyed his grandchildren, cheering them on and always enquiring, “what are the kids up to?!”

Charles is survived by his wife of 70 years, Darlene (Folkers) Hille; sons, David Hille of Ransom, KS, Dana (Dana) Hille of WaKeeney, KS; daughters, Darla (Tom) Schroeder of Texhoma, OK, Dee (David) Rademacher of Franklin, TN; grandchildren, Suzanne (Willy) Cadoret, Brandon (Ashley) Hille, Brett Hille, Kyanne Schroeder, Sheridan Schroeder, Jackson Schroeder, Nolan Rademacher, Garrett Rademacher, Mason Rademacher; great-grandchildren, Will Cadoret, Max Cadoret, Abe Cadoret, Wyatt Hille, Madigan Hille, Elias Hille; nephew, Andrew (Ann) Bryan, niece, Barbara Bryan; great-nieces, Josie Bryan, Delilah Bryan Francis. William W. “Bill” Pickle, 86, passed away June 29, 2024, at Rice Co. District Hospital, Lyons, Kansas. He was born on July 13, 1937, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Arthur and Marie (Tucker) Pickle. &nbsp;In 1961, he married Annie Rowland; she passed in April 2003. Bill then married Cheryl Breeden on March 19, 2005. She survives.

He attended Bear Creek School in Jacksonville, Illinois, then proudly served in the United States Army as a mechanic and driver in the 9th Transportation Battalion, 1st Infantry Division during the Vietnam Conflict. Following his time in the service, he landed in Great Bend, and worked for Doonan Truck and Equipment with their tow truck/wrecker department for 38 years prior to his retirement.&nbsp;

Bill was member of the American Legion Post 180, serving as past Post Commander, American Truck Historical Society, and Antique Caterpillar Owners Club of America.

Survivors include his wife of the home; son, Thomas Charles; three daughters, Pam Pennington of Goodland, Missy Seibert and Jennifer Seibert, both of Hutchinson; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

 </figure>William W. “Bill” Pickle, 86, passed away June 29, 2024, at Rice Co. District Hospital, Lyons, Kansas. He was born on July 13, 1937, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Arthur and Marie (Tucker) Pickle. &nbsp;In 1961, he married Annie Rowland; she passed in April 2003. Bill then married Cheryl Breeden on March 19, 2005. She survives.He attended Bear Creek School in Jacksonville, Illinois, then proudly served in the United States Army as a mechanic and driver in the 9th Transportation Battalion, 1st Infantry Division during the Vietnam Conflict. Following his time in the service, he landed in Great Bend, and worked for Doonan Truck and Equipment with their tow truck/wrecker department for 38 years prior to his retirement.&nbsp;Bill was member of the American Legion Post 180, serving as past Post Commander, American Truck Historical Society, and Antique Caterpillar Owners Club of America.Survivors include his wife of the home; son, Thomas Charles; three daughters, Pam Pennington of Goodland, Missy Seibert and Jennifer Seibert, both of Hutchinson; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp;Bill is preceded in death by a grandson, Jody Allen Charles; his parents; brother, Raymond Pickle; and sister, Lucille Pickle.Cremation has taken place. Charlene Marie Shaw (Char, Lenie, BumBum, Mom, Gma) was born in Springfield, Colorado on June 3rd, 1938, to Fred and Mary Gibson, and she went to her eternal home on June 26th in Logan, Kansas. Char’s childhood was spent learning, loving, and causing havoc with the rest of the Gibson Clan. On July 30th, 1955 she was united in marriage in Clayton, New Mexico to Jarrold Tex Shaw.

Charlene and Tex made their home in Selden, Kansas. They were married for 64 years, which were packed full of adventure and fun! Char continued to live in Selden until Sept 2023, when at that time she moved to Logan Manor in Logan, Kansas and lived there for the remainder of her time with her loving “family” there.

Char lived a life full of adventure! Between snowmobiling, fishing, camping, trike riding, and so much more, she developed life-long friendships across the United States.

One thing is for certain, she had a deep love for her family, and this was obvious by the joy she had when she attended any and every activity she could for them. Her house was the site for endless numbers of card games, ping pong, and many others. Snacks were never ending, and you were very likely to hear some George Strait!

She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Mary Gibson; husband, Tex Shaw; her Brothers Gene, Donald, Larry, Bob, Kenneth, and Wayne; and sisters Margaret Wade, Iris Taft, Inis Brisendine, and Shirley Greenlee

She is survived by 4 Children: Randy and Adeana Shaw of Springfield, Colorado, Dan and Miriam Shaw of Selden, Kansas, Doug and Jill Shaw of Ellis, Kansas, Lisa and Lance Stoll of Selden, Kansas, and sister-in- law Debbie Gibson of Springfield, Colorado and sister-in-law Doris Jean Oliver of McCook, Nebraska. 14 Grandchildren, 21 Great Grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Wednesday, July 10th, at 1:30 p.m. in the Selden Grade School Gym. A family burial will be held at a later time. Charlene Marie (Gibson) Shaw

Shirley Virginia Elizabeth (Moore) Seltmann, age 96, of Rush Center, Kansas, peacefully passed away on February 2, 2024, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed Unit, La Crosse, Kansas.

Shirley was born April 22, 1927, to Hale H. and Magdalene M. (Ekblad) Moore in Larned, Kansas, where her father was a well-known Hartford Insurance agent, and her mother was an English teacher and homemaker. She had one brother, John, who married and moved to England after getting out of the armed services. She was in the Girl Scouts and went to school from kindergarten through high school in Larned, Kansas. After completing high school in 1945, she went to K-State for one year, then went back to Larned where she worked for Wards, the local movie theater, and sometimes helped her dad at the insurance agency. The next year after that, she went to The Kansas City Art Institute and School of Design. She was a very creative person whether it be drawing, painting, writing articles, knitting, or poetry. She also loved learning, whether it be from reading books, or watching DVD’s. Shirley loved cats and irises, planting new ones even in her 90’s. She enjoyed creating many numerous items . . . such as making scrapbooks when she was younger and continued creating and collecting throughout her life.

On March 30, 1948, she was married to Gilbert Seltmann, a farmer from the Rush County area, at her parents’ home in Larned, Kansas. They were married 45 years until Gilbert passed away on November 4, 1993. After marriage, they moved out to Nekoma, Kansas, where they stayed at the old homestead with Gilbert’s parents, before they got a place of their own in the Nekoma area. Later on, they moved to rural Rush Center. She was a farm wife, and it was not unusual for her to help in the fields when not busy in the kitchen. They were blessed with two children, Douglas and Cynthia.

Douglas passed away 11 years ago. Shirley was a member and participated in the local extension “Unit” groups, first in Alexander and then in the Rush Center area “Prairie Pals”. She was a member of the Walnut Valley Senior Center in Rush Center also and enjoyed fellowshipping with the seniors in the area playing games and helping with potato bars and different events.

Survivors include: her daughter, Cynthia Hemken, Choctaw, Oklahoma; four grandsons, Timothy Hemken (and wife, Ashlee), Del City, Oklahoma, Richard Seltmann (and Mellissa Keller-Chlumsky), Hays, Kansas, Ronald

Seltmann (and wife, Mary), Liberty, Missouri, and Ryan Seltmann (and wife, Melissa), Hays, Kansas; two great grandchildren, Mallory Seltmann, Hays, Kansas, and Tyler Seltmann, Liberty, Missouri; and two step great grandsons, Josh Scott, Amarillo, Texas, and Ira Stull, Ness City, Kansas; one step great great granddaughter, Miriya Scott, Amarillo, Texas; and four step great great grandsons, Joshua Scott, Ness City, Kansas, Cadyn Harley, Ness City, Kansas, Kash Stull, Ness City, Kansas, and Gage Christianson, Amarillo, Texas.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gilbert Seltmann; her brother, John Moore; her son, Douglas Seltmann; her daughter in law, Barbara (Peach) Seltmann; her son in law, Stanley Hemken; her step grandchildren, Merlynna Harley, and Morgan Harley; and numerous other loved ones.

A celebration of her life will be Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 1:00 P.M. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Michael Bremer officiating. Inurnment will be at the Nekoma Union Township Cemetery, Nekoma, Kansas. There will be a luncheon to follow after the graveside committal service for all, back at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Walnut Valley Senior Center, Rush Center, Kansas.

On June 23rd Debra (Debbie) Ann Hicks (64) passed away peacefully at her home in Beaverton, OR. She was born October 9, 1959, in Great Bend, KS, to Beverly &amp; Francis Weigel.

Debbie was known for her big heart &amp; her generosity. She loved her family more than anything. She cherished spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid football fan &amp; loved watching the Broncos &amp; Chiefs play. The ocean was her safe harbor, she went as often as she could. Debbie passed the time with her many hobbies. She enjoyed gardening, baking, crocheting, reading, and watching a good movie.

Debbie was reunited in death with her son Joshua, her brother Craig Weigel, &amp; her father Francis Weigel.
