Sandra Rae Counter, 75, passed away on June 9, 2024, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Nebraska. Sandy was born on August 25, 1948, to Raymon and Queenie (Smith) Critchfield in Oberlin, Kansas.

Sandy was raised near Colby, Dresden and Oberlin, Kansas and graduated from Decatur Community High School in 1966. After high school, she worked at the bakery in Oberlin for a year to save money to attend McCook Beauty Academy. After graduating from the academy in 1968, she worked as a beautician and eventually was able to open her own shop in Oberlin called Sandy’s Magic Mirror.

On April 13, 1980, she married Fred Edward Counter at the Oberlin Methodist Church. They made their home on the Counter family farm southwest of Oberlin and were blessed with two children, Lemilla and Fred Jonathan. They faithfully attended Lund Covenant Church and the Oberlin Methodist Church over the years. Sandy enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing and meeting monthly with the Calico Gals. She was always up for a good conversation, and she loved to support her children and grandchildren in their various activities such as 4-H, football, tennis, music concerts, and dance recitals.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Raymon and Queenie Critchfield, her husband, Fred Edward Counter, and brother, Herbert Critchfield. She is survived by her children, Lemilla (David) Arp of McCook, Nebraska and Jonathan (Elisabeth) Counter of Oberlin, Kansas; grandchildren, Liliana Harris, Harlowe Arp, Cameo Counter, Brennan Counter, and Henry Counter; and brother, Martin Critchfield of Denver, Colorado.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 13, 2024, from 1:00-7:00 p.m. at Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home, with family receiving guests from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Oberlin Cemetery following the service. Cesar Villarreal, a long time member of the Garden City community, passed away on June 11, 2024, at the age of 77. He was born on February 25, 1947, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Ysidro and Petra Villarreal.

Cesar grew up playing sports and graduated from Garden City High School in 1965. He grew up in the family owned business of floor covering and after a short stint in the liquor retail business, he went back to floor covering and went on to become the owner of a respected floorcovering company. His work ethic was a testament to his value of hard work. His commitment to his work was matched only by his dedication to his country, as he honorably served as a Reservist. He entered the United States Army Reserves in January 1967 and was released on February 9, 1974. He trained at Fort Lewis Washington, Fort Ord, California, Fort Leonard, Missouri and Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was proud to have served and following in the steps of his father and 2 uncles. He relished his trips to Dairy Queen for dilly bars, and partaking of a cold beverage on a hot day. A devoted Kansas City Chiefs fan, he never missed a game, and his enthusiasm for his team was infectious. Above all, Cesar was a devoted grandfather who gave great advice and was always ready with a helping hand or a word of encouragement. He remained positive even when his health declined. He knew the meaning of a good hug.

He is survived by his children, Sean (son) and Chandrey Villarreal, Celyn Hurtado (daughter) and Trevor Martin; Sister- Sophia Villarreal Gunter. His legacy continues through his Grandchildren-Alexis Leon and Cade Roth, Laela Villarreal and Colby Kells, Athen Villarreal, Stella Villarreal, AJ and Roxana Hurtado, Hillary and Matthew Gregory, Isaiah Ramos, Kevin and Christina Newell, Darin Jr and Katlyn Newell, Tre Coyne, Christian Coyne; Great-Grandchildren-Lola Leon, Marlee Hurtado, Isabel "Izzie" Hurtado, Paisley Gregory, Elijah Gregory, Christopher Newell, Sonya Newell, Jacob Newell, Kathrynne Newell, Maddie Coyne and RaeAnne Coyne;&nbsp; &amp; longtime business partner-Fernando Ojeda.

He was preceded in death by his Parents and Brothers-Hilary Villarreal and JR Villarreal.

Eyvonne D. Crase, 91, died Monday, June 10, 2024, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City, Kansas. She was born October 12, 1932, in Hillsboro, Kansas, the daughter of David &amp; Eva (Janzen) Krause.

Eyvonne moved with her family to Deerfield, Kansas when she was a child. She attended Deerfield schools where she graduated from Deerfield High School. She then attended and graduated from Garden City Community College in 1952. On November 29, 1953, she married Daniel W. Crase in Deerfield, Kansas. They made their home in Garden City. A homemaker, Eyvonne enjoyed spending her time bowling, coloring, and working puzzles. She was a Charter member of Bible Christian Church.

Survivors include three daughters Debra Friend of Wichita, Kansas, Nancy &amp; husband Paul Rodriguez of Wichita, Kansas, and Suzanne &amp; husband Rod Johnson of Garden City; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Eyvonne is preceded in death by her husband Daniel who died on January 17, 2005. She is also preceded in death by her parents; her step-father Glen Morford; a brother Lloyd Krause; and a sister Virginia DeWitt.

Robert Aparicio-Chavez, 38, died June 8, 2024, in Lakin, Kansas. Born on March 13, 1986, in Juan Aldama, Zacatecas, Mexico, the son of Jesus and Maria Del Socorro (Chavez) Aparicio.&nbsp;Robert’s family moved in Lakin in the early 1993, he attended schools there and graduated from Lakin High School's class of 2003. Robert's passion for capturing the beauty of everyday moments led him to a fulfilling career as a freelance photographer. In addition to his photography, Robert was a talented artist, known for his handcrafted figurines and candles. Robert's interests extended beyond his artistic endeavors; he was a man who cherished the simple pleasure of spending time with family and friends. He loved to travel and loved music, he enjoyed going to his favorite singers concerts and was an avid Raiders fan. His humorous and joking nature was the heartbeat of gatherings, and his ability to spin a tale or crack a joke ensured that laughter was never in short supply. His generous nature and artistic spirit brightened the lives of all who knew him.

Edwin Ervin Younger 'Erv', 87, of Tribune, Kansas, passed away Saturday, April 29th, 2017 at Greeley County Hospital. Erv was born in Ellis County, Kansas on February 22, 1930, son of the late Mary (Braun) and Joseph Younger. He married Ramona 'Monie' Jean Conner in Marienthal, Kansas in 1948.

Before his retirement, he was the Owner/Manager of the John Deere Dealership in Tribune, Kansas, for 45 years. He was also a True Value Hardware Dealer. After retirement, Erv and Ramona moved to Salina, Kansas where Erv was an independent contractor at Advance Auto.

Erv was involved in the community of Greeley, Kansas in many ways. Erv had a love of music and song, and sang his way through life. Edwin always said he had a good life and he never lost his spirit to live, was known for his story telling and his sense of humor. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Survivors include wife, Monie, of Tribune; sons, Max Younger, Alan Younger (Kris) both of Salina; seven grandchildren, Jason and Victoria Younger, Beth Hanny, Jill and Brett Beringer, Jena and Matt McKenzie, Adam and Mindy Younger, Nick Younger, Emily Younger; and thirteen great-grandchildren, Cole, Jacob, Grace, Tatum, Jude, Zekke, Titus, Madix, Joshua, Cora, Thad, Oliver, Andrew.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ron Lane; five brothers; four sisters; and a precious great granddaughter, Emma Renee.

Edwin “Erv” Ervin Younger

Martin E. “Marty” Dumler, 74, of Russell, Kansas, passed away
Sunday, June 9, 2024 at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.

Marty was born March 8, 1950 in Russell, Kansas. He was the son of
Elroy George and Fern M. (Bloom) Dumler. He grew up in Russell and graduated
from Russell High School in the Class of ’68 and served as FFA chapter
president his senior year. He attended Kansas State University briefly before
transferring to the Beloit Welding School.

Marty was united in marriage to Constance S. “Connie” Brown on
January 22, 1993. They made their home in rural Russell, on the farm where
Marty grew up. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Marty was a Farmer and Rancher most of his life. After completing
welding school, he worked as a welder for Bernie Erbert Co., but soon returned
to his agricultural roots. In his youth he worked with a custom harvesting
operation and cut wheat from Kansas to Montana. He joined the American Ag
Movement in the late 1970s and drove his tractor to the capitol in Topeka to
advocate for family farmers and the way of life he loved. He served on the
Co-Op Board in Gorham as well as the Water District Board. He later became a
crop insurance agent with Protection Plus before opening Dumler Crop Insurance
in 2006.

Marty was a proud and dedicated single dad who curled hair, baked
cupcakes, and led Cub Scout meetings between working cattle, and hanging
wallpaper on the side. He did carpentry, laid brick, built fences. He was a
skilled mechanic and an excellent cook. If it needed done Marty could do it,
and he would do anything to help his friends.

The Christian faith was a huge part of Marty’s life. He played
church volleyball, attended bible study, and raised his children in the church.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served as a Sunday school
teacher and made soup for the Soup Suppers for many years. &nbsp;

When the work was done Marty loved to shoot the shit, drink a
beer, play pitch, and get you with a “knothole. He and Connie absolutely loved
to jitterbug and if there was a dance floor, they were cutting a rug whenever
they had the chance. &nbsp;

Marty was well loved, and will be sorely missed. &nbsp;

His surviving family includes Connie, his wife of 31 years; his
three children, Heath

Dumler of Saint Joseph, Missouri, Lacey Dumler and husband
Philippe Forest of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and Darci Baker and husband Randy
of Russell, Kansas; sister, June Gfeller of Olathe, Kansas; and six
grandchildren, Austin, Brandon, Madeline, Myla, Lucy and Walden.

Marty was preceded in death by his parents; twin sister, Edith
Dreiling; and grandson Joshua Bachar.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday,
June 14, 2024 at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. Burial will follow in the
St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to
8:00 PM, Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell
with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.&nbsp;

and he would do anything to help his friends.The Christian faith was a huge part of Marty’s life. He played
church volleyball, attended bible study, and raised his children in the church.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served as a Sunday school
teacher and made soup for the Soup Suppers for many years. &nbsp;When the work was done Marty loved to shoot the shit, drink a
beer, play pitch, and get you with a “knothole. He and Connie absolutely loved
to jitterbug and if there was a dance floor, they were cutting a rug whenever
they had the chance. &nbsp;Marty was well loved, and will be sorely missed. &nbsp;His surviving family includes Connie, his wife of 31 years; his
three children, HeathDumler of Saint Joseph, Missouri, Lacey Dumler and husband
Philippe Forest of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and Darci Baker and husband Randy
of Russell, Kansas; sister, June Gfeller of Olathe, Kansas; and six
grandchildren, Austin, Brandon, Madeline, Myla, Lucy and Walden.Marty was preceded in death by his parents; twin sister, Edith
Dreiling; and grandson Joshua Bachar.Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday,

Darlene, a longtime resident of Great Bend, was a CNA, dedicating many years to taking care of family and friends. She was a Christian who was known to have a free spirit and enjoyed Coca-Cola and strawberry collectibles.

Survivors include her daughters, Shaneil Gorney and husband Brandon Ballinger of Great Bend, and Shanade Gorney and husband Kieran Jordan of Alamosa, Colo.; son, Dalton Nokleby (Gorney) of Manhattan; grandchild, Kian Jordan; two sisters, Frances Wonser of Hutchinson, and Debra Cain of Great Bend; and large extended family.

Jonna Dee Naylor, 78, passed away May 25, 2024, at her home in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on December 21, 1945, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to John and Winifred (Boyd) Lake.&nbsp;

A recent resident of Great Bend, Jonna previously lived in Oklahoma City, Lucas, and Lindsborg. She attended beauty school and went on to own a beauty salon before owning a liquor store in Lucas. Jonna was a member of the Methodist faith, and enjoyed watching sports, including the Kansas City Chiefs, Oklahoma University sports, and the St. Louis Cardinals, liked to garden, cook, layout by the pool, and loved her animals, especially Pomeranians. She was an avid QVC shopper, and enjoyed much time spent with her companion on over 30 years, Donald “Don” Oriez, gaming at casinos.

Survivors include son, Jeff White and wife Heather of Great Bend; three grandchildren, Dylan Frank and wife Destice of Great Bend, Wyatt Frank and wife Sierra of Ellinwood, and Bailey Jones of Wichita; and one great grandchild, Calvin Frank.

She is preceded in death by her companion, Don Oriez; and her parents.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2024, at Lucas Community Church (a global, Methodist congregation), Lucas, Kansas, with Pastor Les Rye presiding. Arlyce J. Steele, age 87, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at the Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas. She was born on July 6, 1936, to Lewis Merlin &amp; Doris Williams in Imperial, Nebraska. When she was six, the family moved to Wilroads Gardens, Kansas.

She was a member of the Tribune community since 1961, moving from Garden City, Kansas. While in Tribune, she was a devoted wife and mother; taking care of the home and business. She also volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and helped with hair care at the nursing home. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and was active in the Methodist women’s group. She found enjoyment in gardening, taking care of the yard, and decorating her home. During the summers, Marilyn Schartz would spend summers with the family helping her with projects. Arlyce enjoyed sewing, painting, ceramics, and going to craft fairs. She was adept at playing piano and organ. She loved going to family reunions and traveling with her sister, Darle. She loved watching her children and grandchildren participate in sports, traveling to many events over the years. She was very proud of their accomplishments. People will remember her as pretty and kind, always dressed so nicely &amp; her hair fixed up. Most of all, Arlyce was a Godly woman who cared for others.

On August 20, 1955, Arlyce married Larry Dale Steele in Dodge City, Kansas. He survives. Together they lived in Manhattan and Garden City before making their home in Tribune.

Arlyce is survived by her husband, her children - Micki &amp; Daniel Blair of Monterey, Tennesee, Kelly &amp; Michael Donohue of Parker, Colorado, Lance &amp; Linda Steele of Tribune, Kansas, her grandchildren - Jayson &amp; Melanie Steele of Henrico, Virginia, John &amp; D’Angela Dexter of Tucson, Arizona, Dylan Dexter of Brockport, New York, Landon &amp; Lauren Steele of Dodge City, Kansas, Laran &amp; Holly Steele of Tribune, Kansas, Laken &amp; Samantha Steele of Tribune, Kansas, Lakaya &amp; Ty Bieker of Newton, Kansas, sixteen great-grandchildren; Emma, John Lee, Remi, Lochlyn, Lynlie, Amaris, Pake, Danen, Otto, Rush, Lawson, Delanie, Lara, Tate, Dominic &amp; Case.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister - Darle Henry, one brother - Darrell Williams, and one grandson - Cory Ryan Wang.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. (Mountain Time) at the United Methodist Church in Tribune, Kansas with pastor Jeri Smith presiding.&nbsp;

Interment will be at the Greeley County Cemetery following the service.

Arlyce J. Steele

Linda Ellen Oakes passed away on June 3, 2024, in Garden City, Kansas at age 83. Although a long-time beloved resident of Garden City, Linda was born in Paden, Oklahoma on June 24, l940, the third and youngest child of Cecil Everett Oakes, a prominent educator and superintendent of schools in Okemah, OK, and Frances Larson Oakes.

Despite being a University of Oklahoma Sooner at heart, Linda’s Swedish heritage led her to Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. From there, she transferred to Oklahoma City University from which she graduated after earning her teacher’s certification. Linda then followed in her father’s firm footsteps, entering the profession of education in Okemah. One momentous summer, while visiting her maternal Uncle Andrew and Aunt Jean Larson in Garden City, she was invited to apply for an elementary teaching position in USD 457, which she readily accepted. Thus began her life as a proud member of the Garden City community where she lived until her passing.

An entrepreneurial dream enticed Linda away from her successful years of elementary teaching. The remainder of her professional life was dedicated to the hard and rewarding work of shopkeeper, building several of her own small businesses. The Linen Gallery and the Bath House, specializing in kitchen and bath decor, brought beauty and function to many southwest Kansas homes. She rounded out her career with All About Windows, a drapery and window covering design company, which took her on the road from Wichita to Denver and everywhere in between.

Throughout her busy and productive life, Linda found solid ground in her relationship with Christ and in her community of Methodist believers. She was passionate about participating and eventually serving in leadership in the Walk to Emmaus, a discipleship program that equips Christians with confidence and skills to flourish in a fruitful walk with Jesus. Linda was a prime example of the program’s success.

Linda loved her pets, travel, and the many people God put in her path. She was well known in all her endeavors as a faithful friend to many, a diligent worker who followed through on her commitments, and a favorite cousin in her large extended family. Along with her famous sense of humor, her deep faith was evident in the clear and joyful way she joined in hymn singing and agreeable conversation even throughout the dark days of memory loss. She will be greatly missed.

Linda died in her Homestead residence from complications due to dementia and is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Cecil Oakes Jr.; and her sister, Karen Leveridge. She is survived by five nieces and nephews and numerous cousins, including Karin Larson Henkle and Andrew Larson Jr. both of Garden City.

All are invited to her memorial service on Saturday, June 15, at 10:30am at the Presbyterian Church, 1719 Texas Street. The service will be conducted by Reverend Gary Davison of The Faith Community, a Global Methodist Church. She will be interred directly after at Valley View Cemetery with a graveside service. Following the service, please join the family at the Presbyterian Church for a fellowship luncheon.

Shelby Lynne Cramer, 32, of Garden City, Kansas, passed away on January 13, 2024. She was born on August 24, 1991, in Garden City, Kansas.

Shelby was a loving and passionate person who cherished her role as a mother. She found joy in singing and had a talent for decorating her family home. Known for her kindness and ability to listen, she had a stubborn streak that added to her unique personality. Shelby had the ability to light up a room with her dazzling smile and sparkling green eyes.

Shelby is survived by her husband, Douglas Kee, her mother, Sherry Cramer, her father, Lee Cramer, and her two sons, Darrin E. Kee and Gabriel C. Kee. She is also survived by her brother, Seth Cramer, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

In her free time, Shelby enjoyed going to the zoo and spending quality time with her family even if it meant doing a chore or something that others might feel could wait for another day. She always encouraged others to get out and do something this brought her happiness, and allowed her to create lasting memories with loved ones.

Ramona Jean (Conner) Younger

Larned – Victor E. Kreutzer, 92, passed away June 8, 2024 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born February 26, 1932 in La Crosse, the son of Leo and Albertine (Legleiter) Kreutzer.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Larned. He was a welder and fabricator for O’Neill Tank, and McDonald Tank and Equipment in Great Bend, Kansas for many years. After retiring, he volunteered at the Welcome Inn. He was a US Army veteran.

On September 5, 1956 he married Theresa Wondra in Liebenthal, Kansas.

Survivors include: son, Ron (Monica) Kreutzer; grandchildren Amanda and Ryan; sister, Margie (Floyd) Rohr; brother, Perry (Lou) Kreutzer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Bruce, and wife Theresa.

Bernard Nick Hoeg, 93, of Natoma, Kansas, died on Thursday, June 06, 2024, at the Rooks County Medical Center in Plainville, Kansas

Bernard was born in Missoula, Montana, May 4, 1931, to William and Mabel (Olsen) Hoeg. He grew up there and graduated high school in 1950. After high school he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Greenland and Washington. Bernie was a licensed mortician, his career for many years. Later he became a convenience store owner in Stevensville, Montana and worked in a boat shop in Florida. He did many other jobs, including handyman, volunteer fireman, ambulance driver, played basketball, sang in church and much more. He was a friendly, outgoing Christian person.

He was married to Della (Pooley) Richmond on Nov. 4, 2017, and moved from Montana to her home in Natoma.

He was preceded in death by two wives, two stepsons, his brother and his parents.

Surviving family include his wife, Della; two sons, Bryan and Todd, both of Montana; a daughter, Melissa McCuiston of Ben Lomond, California, 7 grandchildren, several stepchildren, and numerous step-grandchildren.

Cremation was Bernie's choice. A memorial service will be held at 11 A.M. on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at the New Life Church in Natoma, Kansas, (formerly the Methodist Church). with Pastor Janet Reynolds officiating. She was born October 24, 1940 in Larned, the daughter of Foster Fox and Essa Mae Sohl Cochran.

A lifetime area resident, she was a food service supervisor at Larned State Hospital and past member of the Church of the Nazarene, where she taught Sunday School. She was very strong in her faith, always encouraging others and guiding them towards their faith. She enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, and spending time with family, especially her great granddaughter.

On June 13, 1965 she married Frederick E. Meier Jr. at Larned; he survives.

Other survivors include: daughter, Cristina Meier, Hays; brother, Jimmy Story, Kansas; sister, Donna (Oren) Blakely, Larned; granddaughter, Brittany Espinosa, Hays; great granddaughter, Luna; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Miles Story, and sister, Billie Miller.

Douglas H. Riggs, 63, of WaKeeney, Kansas, passed away on June 9, 2024. Doug was born in WaKeeney, Kansas, on August 3, 1960. He graduated from Trego Community High School in 1978.

Doug was an extraordinary musician. He achieved professional status at the age of 13 when he became the drummer for the Ted Smith Orchestra. In high school, Doug performed with Derby and, more notably, The Johnny Chambers Group. Upon graduating high school, Doug loaded his drums and headed west for Los Angeles. Against all odds, his auditions went very well, and he soon found himself touring the country with Jon Washington, a former member of The Fortunes (Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again). Doug’s next job was with the Carl Dante Band (Carl being a former member of Gary Pucket and the Union Gap). Doug performed with this band live on the Dinah Shore TV show, where he was introduced as “Rocko Riggs.” Soon after, they toured Europe. Back in the U.S., his next band was with Gregg Bell in a group known as The Genetics, which included members who had previously performed with Diana Ross. Doug also performed with “The Dons,” who created songs that were used in soundtracks for movies (including some credited to Disney). Other bands included Secret Life, Love and the Haters, and ThunderBisquit. More recent samples of Doug’s drumming can be found on Facebook, including a live performance at the Riggs family farmyard that garnered 95,000 views (posted by Motofly7).

Doug also enjoyed riding his motocross bike (with reckless abandon) in the San Gabriel Mountains near his home in North Hollywood, California. The bike came with him when he moved back to WaKeeney, and the south pasture bears the scars of his recent adventures. He also enjoyed fishing. He could be seen recently climbing the rocks of the dam at Cedar Bluff Lake. Doug was also a lover of animals. He was a guardian-level member of the ASPCA, and he enjoyed feeding and nurturing stray cats near his home in California. Doug’s charity was also evidenced in one of his last wishes communicated to his family. He asked that his drums NOT be sold but be given to a promising young musician who could not afford to buy them. An organization known as “Hungry for Music” was identified, and his set was collected and is on its way back to the LA area.

Doug is survived by his mother, Carolyn Riggs of WaKeeney, his brother, Matt Riggs, and his wife Iris (Waldschmidt) of Champaign, Illinois, and a niece, Erin Riggs, and husband, Subhonmesh Bose, also of Champaign, Illinois, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Doug was preceded in death by his father, Glen Riggs.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12th, 2024, at the WaKeeney City Cemetery. John Anderson of the Prairie Faith Shared Ministry will be officiating. Richard “Dick” Koerner, 74, of Topeka, passed away on June 6, 2024. He was born in Hays, Kansas, on July 20, 1949.

Dick attended the St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays, and he received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Fort Hays State University in 1972 and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Kansas in 1983. &nbsp;He was employed by the Kansas Department of Corrections for over 30 years, serving as warden of the Topeka Correctional Facility for approximately 15 years.

Dick performed improv comedy with the Senior Class of Topeka for several years. He enjoyed throwing Forrest Gump-themed parties and riding one of several scooters along the Scenic Byways of Kansas. He also loved to play Risk and word games, make clever puns, and prepare holiday feasts from scratch. &nbsp;Dick is survived by his wife of 21 years, Jody. Dick and Jody married on March 22, 2003, in Topeka. Other surviving family members include Dick’s siblings, Ann Koerner (married to Rich Camp) and David Koerner (married to Judy), Dick’s step-children, Jennifer and Greg Arnett, and Dick’s grandchildren, Elise and Amelia Roehrich.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph “Whitie” and Louise Koerner, and his siblings Herbert “Herb” and Thomas “Tom” Koerner.

George Paul Gatschet, age 85, of Hays, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at Via Christi Village, Hays. George was born on February 17, 1939, in Hays, Kansas, the son of George W. Gatschet and Agnes L. Brull.

George graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy in 1957. He married Ethel Ann Leiker on September 10, 1960, at St. Fidelis Catholic Church in Victoria. Ethel preceded George in death on April 25, 2012.

George dedicated much of his life to serving others. He was a long-time Administrator for St. John's Assisted Living Center in Hays and an active volunteer at TMP-Marian, contributing in various capacities from the kitchen to handyman work. As a devout Catholic, George was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays and the 3rd degree St. Joseph Council Knights of Columbus. He was also a committed member of the Perpetual Adorers and served as an Altar Server for over twenty years.

Beyond his community service, George was a talented woodworker and furniture builder. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was always eager to help and support his Catholic community.

George is survived by his four daughters, Kathy (Rege) Klitzke of Wichita, Carol (Richard) Staples of Hays, Joyce (Kevin) Rupp of Hays, and Lisa Craig of Olathe; a brother, Paul (Carolyn) Gatschet; seven grandchildren, Kaitlan Goetz, Jacob Klitzke, Erica Fisher, Maria Cutright, Richard A. Staples, Lesley Hagar, and Danielle Craig; as well as eleven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel; two brothers, Francis and Thomas; and a sister, Jeanne Winter.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 12:30 PM on Saturday at the church and continue until the time of the service.

Dora Jean “Jeanie” Gregory, 88, passed away June 8, 2024, at Azria Health in Great Bend. She was the youngest daughter born April 19, 1936, to George L. and Frances (Koelsch) Whitsel in Great Bend.

She married George A. Hejny Aug. 4, 1953. They later divorced. On May 14, 1973, she married Donald McEachern, later Nathan Gregory. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and everyone’s Aunt Jeanie. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, helping people and her old birthday club. She was a member of Harts Corner Missionary Baptist Church. She was a housewife and later worked as a Certified Med Aide for The Manor in Great Bend.

She is survived by her children: Douglas A. Hejny of Great Bend, Daughter; Georgina Cartmill (Howard) of Dighton. Daniel L. Hejny (Jenny) of McCamey, Texas, Robert D. Hejny, and Christopher E. McEachern both of Great Bend, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and extended family members and friends. She was proceeded in death by her parents, four infant sons, three brothers; George, Melvin, and Franklin Whitsel, six sisters; Meda Rankin, Edna Mae Whitsel, Jody Young, Sue Suchy, Lillian Claphan, and Norma Smith.

She was a housewife and later worked as a Certified Med Aide for The Manor in Great Bend.She is survived by her children: Douglas A. Hejny of Great Bend, Daughter; Georgina Cartmill (Howard) of Dighton. Daniel L. Hejny (Jenny) of McCamey, Texas, Robert D. Hejny, and Christopher E. McEachern both of Great Bend, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and extended family members and friends. Dora Jean 'Jeanie' Gregory, age 88

James William “Bill” McCulley, 95, passed away June 9, 2024, at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on October 28, 1928, in Okfuskee County, Oklahoma, to Fred and Olive (Beets) McCulley. On June 18, 1950, he married Phyllis June Young in Ness City, Kansas. She passed on June 30, 2018.

A resident of Great Bend since 1960, Bill worked as a superintendent for Mullergren Power Plant, the electric power company for Great Bend. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and attended Grace Community Church. Bill was a jack of all trades and mastered them all. He was an adventurous man, enjoying cars, boats, skiing – both water and snow, motorcycles, and airplanes, having earned his private pilots’ license and flying a plane as recently as his 90th birthday. Bill also enjoyed camping and golfing. He was a loving, kind, gentle and wise man who loved his family immensely.

Survivors include sons, Kelly McCulley of Hudson, and Karl McCulley and wife Brenda of Great Bend; daughters, Kathy Tacha and Max Mizer of Jennings, and Karen Stewart and husband Clay of Great Bend; six grandchildren, Korey McCulley, Kiefer McCulley, Kayla May and husband Jesse, Miranda Shoemaker and husband Brad, Keegan McCulley and wife Jennifer, Grace McCulley; one great-grandchild, Alara McCulley; brother, Darrell McCulley and wife Vivian of Grafton, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Joyce Kraft of Lakewood, Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; his parents; brother, Dean McCulley; and sister, Louise Turk.

James 'Bill' McCulley, age 95

It is with sadness that her family notes the passing of Frances Waugh Maricle home to God May 23, 2024 in Longmont, Colorado, at the age of 99.

Born the 9th&nbsp;of 13 children, to Charles E. &amp; Mabel A. Waugh on November 12, 1924, in Tyrone, OK, Frances was the last surviving sibling of the Waugh family, who farmed in the Weskan, KS area throughout her life. &nbsp;After graduating from Weskan High School in 1942, she attended business school in Topeka, KS, and worked for the Santa Fe Railroad Treasurer’s Dept. &nbsp;She returned to Goodland, KS after some years &amp; worked for the Zuspann &amp; Jones Law Firm until her marriage to Thomas Jess Maricle in 1955. &nbsp;She then helped at Maricle Furniture &amp; enjoyed being at home with her children.

After the death of her husband in 1967, Frances worked as a legal secretary &amp; in retail for many years, while raising her family, finally retiring at age 88. &nbsp;She was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, &nbsp;a &nbsp;63-year member of Chapter Z of P.E.O., &nbsp;a founding member of Chapter ID, &amp; a member of Welcome Wagon. &nbsp;She enjoyed visiting with artists &amp; visitors prior to her retirement from Carnegie Arts Center in Goodland.&nbsp;

Frances was predeceased by her first &amp; second husbands, her parents, &amp; siblings. &nbsp;She leaves behind 4 daughters &amp; their spouses - Beverly &amp; Charles Bell, Paula &amp; Randy Flowers, Linda &amp; Ed Thomas, and Celia &amp; Richard Krebs. &nbsp;She is also survived by 7 grandchildren &amp; spouses, 6 great-grandchildren &amp; 1 great great-grandchild. &nbsp; Other survivors include sisters-in-law Gracia (Mrs. Robert) Maricle &amp; Shirley (Mrs. John) Waugh &amp; many nieces &amp; nephews.

Jhayliegh Aiyana Rosales, 16, passed away Wednesday June 5, 2024 at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born February 19, 2008 in Lakin, Kansas; the daughter of Daniel Rosales and Alyssa (Becker) Lopez.

Jhayliegh is a fun loving and joyous girl. She is the princess of her family and is the best big sister. She has always enjoyed spending time with her siblings who hold a special place in her heart, as well as her family, friends and her dog Bucky.

Jhayliegh is a warrior that never gives up even during her toughest fight. She is the true definition of strength. She has carried us throughout her journey and has been our strength every step of the way.

Jhayliegh has a love for life. She loves many things such as her big family get togethers with lots of laughs, shopping, always having her nails done, swimming, rollercoaster rides, and she also loves making bracelets and hosting lemonade and cookie stands. Jhayliegh has always had a love for fast cars, Justin Bieber, and her favorite superhero Bucky Barnes the Winter Soldier. Her favorite color is purple and she loves butterflies. Words cannot describe the beautiful person Jhayliegh is. She is the example of who we should all strive to be. Her heart is kind, loving, selfless, thoughtful, compassionate, and generous. She is always thinking of others and is one of the purest hearts to walk this earth.

He was born December 30, 1927 in rural Barton County, Kansas, the son of Ora L. and Dorothy Southard Winter.

A lifetime area resident he was a farmer and cattleman.

On May 21, 1949 he married Velma Jean Brown at Burdett, Kansas; she preceded him in death on February 5, 2020.

Survivors include: daughter, Lana Strom, Ankeny, IA; two sons, Roland O. (Marlene) Winter, Burdett, Leon Keith Winter, Burdett; two sisters, Betty Wasson, Dodge City, Iva Helms, Derby; three grandchildren, Rolland Winter, Hays, Jolene (Matt) Roth, Hays, Julianna (Brian) Montgomery, Dodge City; five great grandchildren, Alex (Skyler) Winter Markham, Jake (Micca) Montgomery, Joey Montgomery, Cameron Roth, Haley Roth; one great-great grandchild, Evie.

He retired after 21 years of service in October 2006.&nbsp;Jim joined the Norton Christian Church and was baptized by Darel Boston on November 7, 1982.&nbsp;His greatest love was his wife, Jeanne of 51 ½ years, children and grandchildren.&nbsp;He enjoyed the outdoors including boating, water skiing, camping, and fishing. He also enjoyed his yard, refinishing furniture, family get togethers, attending the grandkids football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, dance recitals, and volleyball games, playing cards, and having coffee with his buddies at Moffet Drug Store.&nbsp;He loved all sports but most of all took pride in attending and watching KU Basketball.&nbsp;Jim will be remembered by many friends and family by his big smile, outgoing personality, and love for life.A celebration of life will be held in the Norton Cemetery, Norton, KS at 11 o’clock on Saturday, June 15th, 2024 with lunch following at the Norton Christian Church.Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, KS is in charge of arrangements.
