Alice L. Gerstner, 95, Hays, died Monday, November 15, 2021, at the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center in Wichita.

She was born December 23, 1925, in 
Catharine, the daughter of Leonard and Margaret (Meier) Staab.&nbsp; On 
September 6, 1948, she was united in marriage to Alfred J. Gerstner, and 
they celebrated nearly 41 years of marriage before he preceded her in 
death on May 26, 1989.&nbsp; She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 
life member of the Hays VFW Auxiliary, and a former longtime member of 
the Daughters of Isabella.&nbsp; She was a homemaker and farmwife and liked 
helping on the farm.&nbsp; Alice was independent, created beautiful 
embroidery projects, enjoyed watching TV and was known to get fired up 
while watching wrestling.&nbsp; She was proud to have lived in the same home 
for 73 years.

Survivors include her son: Wayne 
Gerstner and wife Sandie of Hays, daughter-in-law: Ida Gerstner of Hays,
 five grandchildren: Brian Gerstner and wife Janella Mildrexler, Lance 
Gerstner and wife Brina, Christy Heinlein and husband Tim, James 
Gerstner, and Whitney Gerstner and husband Taylor Gordon, five great 
grandchildren: Elizabeth, Maxwell, Quinn, Jacksen, and Reverie, and 
numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, husband: Alfred, son: Myron, five brothers: Edmund, Wendelin, 
Celly, Felix, and Edgar Staab, and four sisters: Cora Josephine Staab, 
Mary Staab, Rita Marie Schmidtberger, and Rose Urban.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
1:00 pm on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 
with Fr. Richard Daise officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the church 
cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Friday and from
 12:00 pm until 12:45 on Saturday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral 
Home.&nbsp; A VFW Auxiliary rosary service will be at 6:00 pm followed by a 
vigil service at 6:30 pm, both on Friday at the funeral home.&nbsp;

Alice L. Gerstner

Ronald Hornung, 83, died November 12, 2021, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

Ronald L. Hornung was the third of seven children born to Michael C. 
and Rosa (Heiland) Hornung on February 4, 1938. Ron attended the 
Spearville schools, graduating in 1956. He graduated from Fort Hays 
State University in 1960 and married Jan Whipple November 25, 1960; she 
preceded him in death May 26, 1984. He found love again and remarried 
July 23, 1985, to Janice K. Friess.

&nbsp;Ron is survived by his loving wife Janice; his four daughters 
Renelda Hornung, Nadine Baker (Buck), Jill Hornung-Heeke (Rick), and 
Bonnie Scott. He was blessed with eleven grandchildren, three 
step-grandchildren, one great grandchild, and six step great 
grandchildren. He is also survived by two of his siblings, Don Hornung 
(Christy) and Phyllis Stephenson. Ron was also blessed with numerous 
nieces and nephews spanning three families.

&nbsp;After graduation from FHSU he was the fourth employee hired at 
American Products Inc., (CrustBuster SpeedKing) working closely with 
family to engineer and develop farm equipment. In 1973 Ron became 
president of Crust Buster Inc.

&nbsp;Ron was an active member of his community. He served on the city 
council and was elected mayor 1971-1973.&nbsp; In 1976 Ron left Crust Buster 
and Spearville, moving the family to Eagle, Colorado, where he took up 
carpentry and construction with John Logren and then moved into real 
estate with Ray Aman. In 1980 Ron returned to his roots and moved back 
to Spearville to take up the family farm.&nbsp; He retired from farming at 
age 65 and took up gardening! He loved the dirt!

&nbsp;Ron was preceded in death by his son Bruce, his first wife Jan, his parents and four siblings.

&nbsp;A rosary will be held Thursday, November 18, 2021 at 7:00 pm at St. 
John the Baptist Catholic Church in Spearville. Visitation will be held 
on Thursday, November 18, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Swaim Funeral
 Chapel in Dodge City.The funeral mass will be held Friday, November 19,

Randy Lee Boxberger, age 61, passed away on October 18, 2021, in 
Grapevine, Texas, from complications of COVID. He was born on December 
19, 1959, the son of Valeria (Vicki) Boxberger and the late, Arlyn 
Boxberger. He is survived by his mother, Vicki of Great Bend; his wife, 
Cherie’ of Shady Shores, Texas; and daughters, Megan (fiancé-Ashton 
Kendall) of Plano, Texas and Erin of Craftsbury, Vermont.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Randy grew up in Great Bend, Kan. an active member of Trinity 
Lutheran Church. He played American Legion Baseball. As the only son, 
nephew, grandson he was very popular among his family members and 
everyone followed the rule – “No Christmas Paper”.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial 
graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 20, 
2021, at Fairview Cemetery in Galatia, Reverend Wayne Baldyga presiding.
 A reception will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Galatia.

Doris T. Weiser, 93, died November 13, 2021, at Country Place Senior 
Living, Hoisington, Kansas. She was born October 28, 1928, on the family
 farm near Odin, Kansas, the daughter of William B. and Frances 
(Frenzel) Zecha.&nbsp;

On June 8, 1948, she married Herbert A. Weiser at Holy Family 
Catholic Church, Odin, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on February 27,
 1991.

A longtime Hoisington resident, Doris was a homemaker and bookkeeper 
for the family businesses, Hoisington Oil Company and the Conoco service
 station.&nbsp; She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church 
and Altar Society. Doris was well known for her baking and was often 
gifting her delicious baked goods to family and friends.

Survivors include; two sons, Richard Weiser and wife Karen of Oro 
Valley, Arizona, and Eugene Weiser of Hoisington; a daughter, Susan 
Graves of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; a sister, Lucille Schneweis of 
Wichita; five grandchildren, David Kilroy of Denver, Kristin Frazier of 
Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Brian Weiser of Junction City, Eric Weiser of 
Tucson, Arizona, and Jesse Weiser of Thornton, Colorado; four great 
grandchildren, Kristi Blevins, Hadrian, Dimitri, and Augustus Weiser; 
and one great-great granddaughter, Aela Blevins.

She was preceded in death by; her husband, an infant daughter, Mary 
Jane Weiser, five brothers, Raymond, Robert, Victor, Herman, Francis and

Ronald D. Arnold, 87, passed away November 15, 2021, at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned.

He was born July 14, 1934, in Sanford, the son of John F. and Edna I. Firestone Arnold.

A lifetime area resident, he worked for the City of Larned for 
thirty-two years, retiring as the city manager. He was a member of the 
First Christian Church, Great Bend, Larned Noon Lions Club, Kansas 
Municipal Electric Association, president of the Kansas Municipal 
Utilities, and a Melvin Jones Fellowship recipient. He was in the United
 States Navy from 1953 to 1957, serving two years in Japan.

On August 17, 1957, he married Sharon Ault at Derby, she survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, David (Jan) Arnold, Lenexa, Steven
 (Staci) Arnold, Park City; a daughter, Kay (Stephen) Schartz, Larned; 
three brothers, Jim Arnold, El Paso, TX, John Arnold, Larned, Larry 
(Earlene) Arnold, Great Bend; two sisters, Marie Walker, El Paso, TX, 
Ruth (Wendel) Bronson, Del Rio, TX; eight grandchildren, and five great 
grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Alan K. Arnold, and a sister, Barbara Manka.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, November 19, 2021, at 
Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Reverend Joshua Leu presiding.

Thomas Harry “Tom” Mullen, 78, passed away on November 13, 2021, in 
Oberlin, Kansas. He was born on March 17, 1943, in Tacoma, Washington, to
 Jim and Charlotte Mullen.
 Tom grew up in Tacoma and graduated from Stadium High School in 
1961. After high school Tom joined the Navy. On August 20, 1980, Tom 
married Barbara Roberson in Benicia, California. In his spare time he 
loved to work in his yard, talk cars and helping people how ever he 
could. Tom was also very involved with the United Church and the Art 
and Humanities in the Oberlin area. Tom was a very loving and caring 
husband, father, grandfather, and he just became a great grandfather.
 Tom is survived by wife; Barbara Mullen, sons; Steven Wayne Hollars,
 John Carl Hollars, and Robert Lloyd Hollars; grandchildren; Shane 
Hollars, Elizabeth Hollars, and Emily Hollars; great grandchild; Archer

Thomas Harry 'Tom' Mullen

Jerome Aquilla Storms, 78, passed away on November 13, 2021, at the 
Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on December 4, 1942, in
 Lloydminister, Alberta, Canada the son of James and Christine (Vert) 
Storms.

Prior to moving to the United States, he served in the Canadian Armed
 Forces. On May 7, 1973, he married Emagene Mauch Gross in Oregon. Jerry 
drove a crude oil truck for NCRA for 30 years.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Emagene Storms; his daughter, 
Christina Cohoon (Darin) of Jetmore; two stepdaughters, Susan Frusher 
(Tom) and Cindy Reinert (Mike) all of Ness City; Stepson, Terry Gross

Jerome Aquilla Storms, 78, passed away on November 13, 2021, at the 
Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on December 4, 1942, in
 Lloydminister, Alberta, Canada the son of James and Christine (Vert) 
Storms.Prior to moving to the United States, he served in the Canadian Armed
 Forces. On May 7, 1973, he married Emagene Mauch Gross in Oregon. Jerry 
drove a crude oil truck for NCRA for 30 years.Jerry is survived by his wife, Emagene Storms; his daughter, 
Christina Cohoon (Darin) of Jetmore; two stepdaughters, Susan Frusher 
(Tom) and Cindy Reinert (Mike) all of Ness City; Stepson, Terry Gross 
(Ruthie Bray) of Hoisington and his sister, Mary Hullick of Westbank,

John Feeney, 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 12, 2021,&nbsp; at Cedar Village Care Center, Ness City, KS.&nbsp; He was born on December 9,
 1935, in Washington, D.C. the son of John Feeney, Sr. and Myra 
(Richardson) Feeney.&nbsp; He graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School. 
After high school he trained as an Electrical Draftsman where he used 
his skills working at Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission where he 
worked until September 1963.&nbsp;

John served his country in the Army National Guard Reserves from 1957 to 1962 in the 140th Engineer Bn DCNG (DC national guard) as an SP5 E5.&nbsp;

In October 1963, John moved to Ness City, Kansas, where we went to work
 with his father-in-law (Joe Petersilie) as a contract oil well pumper 
until he retired in 2006.&nbsp;

He was member of the United Methodist Church, Ness City, KS.

On June 24, 1961, he married Jo Ann Petersilie in Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp;
 They moved from Takoma Park, Maryland to Ness City, Kansas in 1963 
where they made their home on the farm.

John and Jo Ann celebrated their 60th wedding Anniversary this past June.

John is survived by his wife Jo Ann of Ness City; daughters, Shannon 
Feeney of Ness City and Robin Pierson of Blue Springs, Missouri; one 
granddaughter Regan Pierson also of Blue Springs, Missouri; and his 
sister Ann Feeney of Ness City.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Myra Feeney.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 18th from 5 -7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City.&nbsp; A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 19th, 2021 at the United Methodist Church, Ness City at 11:00 a.m.&nbsp; Burial will be at Ness City Cemetery with military honors.

John Feeney

Doris “Dot” Lofton, age 82, of Lindsborg, Kansas (formerly of Ogallah, Kansas) passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at Bethany+Village, Lindsborg.&nbsp; She was born September 4, 1939, in Denham Springs, Louisiana to Granis Cline and Rita Mae (Madie) Jones Ott.

Dot graduated from high school in Dallas, Texas and then attended Minnesota Bible College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she first met her husband-to-be, Wayne.&nbsp; On August 18, 1961, Dot was united in marriage to Wayne Lynwood Lofton, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after which they enjoyed 55 years of marriage.&nbsp; In 1970 Wayne and Dot moved to Kansas to begin what would end up being a 39-year tenure as pastor and pastor’s wife at the Ogallah Christian Church.&nbsp; You could literally say that Dot stood by her husband’s side, in their ministry in Ogallah, as she could more often than not be seen standing at the front of the church leading the congregational singing, teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and serving on the Ladies Aid ministry.&nbsp; Dot loved to spend time visiting with friends and family and reading. Oh how she liked to read, Dot would often stay up until the late hours of the night reading.&nbsp; Dot spent many hours at the WaKeeney Library scouring thru the book collection trying to find new and interesting things to read.&nbsp; When mom wasn’t reading she also enjoyed traveling with her family, camping, and skiing and writing “Dots Jots," a column for the Western Kansas World newspaper in WaKeeney.

Dot will be missed by many friends and family.&nbsp; Survivors include two children, Shayla and husband Mack Clark of Peabody, Kansas, and Craig and wife Holly Lofton of Lindsborg, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Morgan and husband Tim Lendino, Hadlye Clark, Bayleigh and husband Niles Armstrong, Brock and wife Lindsey Yelton, Tyler Yelton, Trae Yelton, Megan and husband Curtis Satran and Paige and husband Brett Nurnberg; ten great-grandchildren, Olivia, Ella, Braddock, Katella, Gavin, Noah, Laurel and Collin; two sisters Martha Raye Facundus Dennis, Myra Estelle Facundus Peak; two brothers Guy Reno Ott and James Leslie Ott.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and siblings Dorothy Marlene Ott Cavanas and Joyce Marie Facundus Trabeaux Vidrine Friedman.

Doris 'Dot' Lofton

Sharon A. Johnson, 79, passed away on November 14, 2021 in Oberlin, KS. 
 She was born on April 4, 1942, to Alvin (Bud) and Carmie Wickham in 
Hays, KS. She grew up and graduated from Hays High School. 
 In 1960, she married Alvin S. Johnson and helped with the family 
farm and raising their kids. Sharon enjoyed arts and crafts, cooking, 
family time with her children and grandchildren, and moving furniture 
because it just wasn’t right. Her flower garden brought much joy to 
herself and to anyone who came to visit.
 Sharon is survived by her sister-in-law, Cindy Johnson. Her three 
children, Douglas and Terri Johnson (Colorado); Jeannie and Roger Lavers
 (Kansas); and Dallas and Rebecca Johnson (Missouri). Her grandchildren
 are Travis and Vickie Johnson; Kirsten Lavers; Meghan and Dan Tracy; 
Caitlin and Evan Acuff; and A.J., Gage, and Quincy Johnson. Great 
grandchildren are Kyler and Kohen Johnson and Case Tracy.

Mildred Bertha Lippelmann, 95, was born on October 13, 1926, in Bladen, 
NE. She was the 6th of 9 children born to Howard and Ruby (Goble) 
Cramer. She graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1944. She took 
normal training and taught at a country school near Thedford, NE. She 
spent two years in Chicago working in a sporting goods factory.
 She returned to Oberlin to be with her sister Esther Vernon and met 
Gordon Lippelmann. They were married on Aug. 16, 1949. They lived on a 
farm southwest of Oberlin. Three sons were born, Dan, Terry, and Jon. 
Mildred worked at the Oberlin Cedar Living Center as a housekeeper for 
23 years and at the Oberlin Livestock café for 8 years. She was a member
 of the Oberlin Covenant Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Calico Gals 
Club, Widows and Friends Club and a Royal Neighbor member. She and her 
sisters enjoyed a vacation in Acapulco, Mexico. Millie was an avid 
collector of things that pleased her, until her house burnt down in 
2004. Since then, she has a collected a 1960’s craft of large glass 
grapes.
 She had 4 grandchildren, Stephanie, Milo, Wheat, and Rye. 7 great 
grandchildren, Gregory, Baylee, Lane, Lakynn, Ryllie, Levi, and Lucas. 4
 step great grandchildren, Brandon and Steven Gaede, McKayla (Michael) 
Pepper, and Josie Franz, and 4 great great grandchildren. 
 She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Gordon; 2 
grandchildren, Stephanie and Rye; 4 sisters, Esther Vernon, Mary Belle 
Stockes, Donna Faye Rose, and Joan Niles; 3 brothers William Cramer, 
Vernon Cramer, and Glen Cramer.

Almena resident Lyman J. Delimont passed away Friday, November 12, 
2021, at the Norton County Hospital in Norton at the age of 67.

He was born August 26, 1954, in Norton, KS the son of Victor J and Gladys A. (Gipe) Delimont.

Lyman was united in marriage to Rebecca “Becky” L. Perrill on February 14, 1975, in Norton, KS.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Richard “Dick” 
Moreland, Russell Moreland, and William Alexander; and sisters Marilyn 
Moreland-Garrison and Loretta Moreland-Groom.

Survivors include his wife Becky of the home; two sons Michael and 
wife Chris of Logan, KS and Brian and wife Laurie of Ainsworth, NE; 8 
grandchildren; and a sister Joanne Miller and husband Larry of Almena.

Lyman J. Delimont

Esther Marie Karst, 99, died November 14, 2021, at Country Place 
Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born November 4, 1922, in 
Barton County, Kansas, the daughter of Siegmund and Ida M. (Deines) 
Dietz.&nbsp; Esther graduated from Hoisington High School in 1941.

On June 8, 1941, she married Ralph L. Karst in Milberger, Kansas.&nbsp; 
Ralph was a successful grocer who owned Karst Grocery and Hardware in 
Galatia, Kansas, and later owned Center Street Market in Hoisington. 
They were married nearly 50 years. He preceded her in death on March 14,
 1991. Esther was a lifelong Barton County resident, moving from Galatia
 to Hoisington in 1963.&nbsp; She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. H.K. 
Ritter for 20 years before retiring in 1984. Esther was a member of the 
United Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger, the R.S.V.P. and the Clara
 Barton Hospital Auxiliary. Her last five years were spent at Country 
Place Senior Living in Hoisington where she was well cared for and 
frequently said “I’ve got it made in the shade!”

She is survived by two children; Gregory Karst of Lincoln, Nebraska, 
and Melinda Kershaw and husband John of Wichita; a brother, Markus Dietz
 and wife Caroline of McPherson; four grandchildren, Kimberly Taylor 
Epley of Andover, Jessica Harrison and husband John of Seattle, 
Washington, Sheila Heiman and husband Adam of Topeka, Sierra Karst of 
Omaha; seven great grandchildren, Amber Kershaw, Emma and Jack Taylor, 
Kayla and Tyler Harrison, Bryce and Blake Heiman; two great-great 
grandchildren, Tayton Wingelaar and Nathaniel Hernandez; daughter-in-law
 Joyce Duryea (Stanley) of Topeka, and many nieces and nephews who never
 forgot her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, son Stanley Karst, 
brothers Edwin and Luther Dietz, sisters Rosa Nulik, Helen Landon and 
Leona Kauffman, and granddaughter Amy Hoban.

Esther loved music, reading, and crossword puzzles. For many years, 
she and her church peers enjoyed piecing quilts for Lutheran World 
Relief. She valued her church community and her &nbsp;Hoisington friends. 
During WWII, she accompanied Ralph during his military training in the 
U.S. prior to his service in Europe, and she looked back fondly on those
 travels and the lifelong friends they made during that time. She was 
known for her sense of humor and strong spirit, and will be dearly 
missed by her family and friends.

Visitation will be Tuesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke funeral home in Hoisington.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, November 18, 2021, at 
United Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger, Kansas, with Pastor Randy 
Maki presiding. Prior to the burial service, family will greet friends 
at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will 
follow in Fairview Cemetery, Galatia, Kansas.&nbsp;

Attendees at the visitation and funeral service are asked to follow 
COVID-19 precautions of face coverings and social distancing. In lieu of

 </figure>Esther Marie Karst, 99, died November 14, 2021, at Country Place 
Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born November 4, 1922, in 
Barton County, Kansas, the daughter of Siegmund and Ida M. (Deines) 
Dietz.&nbsp; Esther graduated from Hoisington High School in 1941.On June 8, 1941, she married Ralph L. Karst in Milberger, Kansas.&nbsp; 
Ralph was a successful grocer who owned Karst Grocery and Hardware in 
Galatia, Kansas, and later owned Center Street Market in Hoisington. 
They were married nearly 50 years. He preceded her in death on March 14,
 1991. Esther was a lifelong Barton County resident, moving from Galatia
 to Hoisington in 1963.&nbsp; She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. H.K. 
Ritter for 20 years before retiring in 1984. Esther was a member of the 
United Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger, the R.S.V.P. and the Clara
 Barton Hospital Auxiliary. Her last five years were spent at Country 
Place Senior Living in Hoisington where she was well cared for and 
frequently said “I’ve got it made in the shade!”She is survived by two children; Gregory Karst of Lincoln, Nebraska, 
and Melinda Kershaw and husband John of Wichita; a brother, Markus Dietz
 and wife Caroline of McPherson; four grandchildren, Kimberly Taylor 
Epley of Andover, Jessica Harrison and husband John of Seattle, 
Washington, Sheila Heiman and husband Adam of Topeka, Sierra Karst of 
Omaha; seven great grandchildren, Amber Kershaw, Emma and Jack Taylor, 
Kayla and Tyler Harrison, Bryce and Blake Heiman; two great-great 
grandchildren, Tayton Wingelaar and Nathaniel Hernandez; daughter-in-law
 Joyce Duryea (Stanley) of Topeka, and many nieces and nephews who never
 forgot her.She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, son Stanley Karst, 
brothers Edwin and Luther Dietz, sisters Rosa Nulik, Helen Landon and 
Leona Kauffman, and granddaughter Amy Hoban.Esther loved music, reading, and crossword puzzles. For many years, 
she and her church peers enjoyed piecing quilts for Lutheran World 
Relief. She valued her church community and her &nbsp;Hoisington friends. 
During WWII, she accompanied Ralph during his military training in the 
U.S. prior to his service in Europe, and she looked back fondly on those
 travels and the lifelong friends they made during that time. She was 
known for her sense of humor and strong spirit, and will be dearly 
missed by her family and friends.Visitation will be Tuesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke funeral home in Hoisington.Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, November 18, 2021, at 
United Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger, Kansas, with Pastor Randy 
Maki presiding. Prior to the burial service, family will greet friends 
at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will 
follow in Fairview Cemetery, Galatia, Kansas.&nbsp;Attendees at the visitation and funeral service are asked to follow

Michael Lynn “Mike” Towns passed away suddenly and tragically in Rooks 
County, Kansas on November 12, 2021, at the age of 69. Mike was born to 
Clarence Duane and Isabell Ann (Keller) Towns in , Kansas on May 11, 
1952. He was united in marriage to Donna Jean (Belisle) Towns on March 
26, 1981, at the of Christ in Great Bend, Kansas. The couple was 
blessed with two children: Aaron and Ashly.
 Mike grew up in Rooks County and graduated from Palco with the 
class of 1970. Following , he enlisted in the United States Army in 1971
 and was honorably discharged in 1974. Mike moved to Great Bend to work 
in the oilfield in 1978 until he began working for NALCO Chemical 
Trucking and was relocated with his family to Piedmont, Oklahoma in 
1994. The family moved to before returning to Palco in 2018 where Mike 
then retired helping local farmers. He loved his grandkids, horses, and 
other animals…in that . Mike was a devoted family man and was always 
willing to take on any role that needed to be filled. He was a tough 
man, with a hard exterior, but those that were close to him knew that he
 had a kind heart and was willing to help anyone, anytime. Mike enjoyed 
his time attending concerts and race events with his wife Donna. His 
taste in ranged from Lynard Skynard to Willie Nelson, whom he had seen 
six times in person. He also loved spending time in the outdoors, 
hunting pheasants and with his trusty Short Hair, Bo.
 Mike will be missed by his friends and family. His little “Damnet 
Donna” to a “Don’t tell me you love me, show me” will forever 
reverberate in the minds of those that knew him and loved him dearly.
 He is survived by his wife, Donna Towns of the home; mother, Isabell
 Towns of Palco; children, Aaron (Lindsay) Towns of Hays, KS and Ashly 
Towns of Palco, KS; siblings, Pam (Brad) Post of Salina, KS, and Stan 
(Natalie) Towns of Great Bend, KS; and ten grandchildren, Anthony,

Ryder.

Michael Lynn Towns

Joan Marie Kline was born February 6, 1949, in Greeley, NE, the 
daughter of Joseph and Opal Irene (Gleason) Heim and departed this life 
November 7, 2021, at the age of 72 at her home in Smith Center, KS.&nbsp; 
 Joan spent most of her life in Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado, while 
living in Smith Center she met the love of her life, Randy Kline.&nbsp;&nbsp;They 
were married at Fort Rucker Alabama on April 22, 1967, where Randy was 
stationed with the Army.&nbsp;&nbsp;To this union three children were born, twins 
Justin Edward and Melissa Ann on September of 1969, but wait, Joan 
wasn't done yet and in October of 1985, surprise, we had another 
bouncing baby boy, Tyson Frank. Joan's children have always been the 
loves of her life.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Joan and Randy ran a 
greenhouse at their home place in Smith Center for 10 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1995, 
Joan heard the song by Reba McIntire "Is There Life Out There" and she 
made up her mind to pursue a career in nursing, this was a lifelong 
dream of hers and she graduated with honors in 1996.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1997 Joan went 
to work at Long Term Care in Smith Center where she worked for 17 
years.&nbsp;&nbsp;Randy and Joan enjoyed camping and a family fish fry at Glen 
Elder Lake every 4th of July.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Judith Lee Heim and Sandra Lunders.&nbsp; 
 Joan is survived by her husband Randy Kline of Smith Center; three 
children, Justin Kline of Smith Center, Melissa (Caven) Portenier of 
Luray, Tyson (SkyeAnne) Kline of Smith Center; sister Pat (Ralph) 
Werthmann of Osborne; brother Gary (Vivian) Gaster of Woodward, OK; 
seven grandchildren, Aften (Luke) Roenne, Tanner Portenier and partner 
Monica Mullender, Sabrina Kline partner Travis Jones, Hunter Kline and 
partner Cassidy, TylieAnne, Arrow and Octavia Kline and eleven 
great-grandchildren, Riley, Paisley, Joanie, Caylee, Wyatt, Tucker, 
Clayton, Laramie, Lane, Levi and Hollie, many nieces, nephews, family 
members and friends. A celebration of Joan's life will be 
held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 18, 2021 at All Faiths Funeral 
Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center, KS.&nbsp; There will not be a 
public visitation as cremation has taken place. Inurment will take place
 the Gaylord Cemetery, Gaylord, KS.&nbsp; Memorials may be given to Hospice 
Services of Smith County and can be sent in care of the funeral chapel.

Joan Marie Kline

Kayla Lynn Campbell was born on July 2, 1995, in Wichita, Kansas to 
Kenneth Lee Bowman and Carol Lynne King (Campbell). She passed away on 
November 7, 2021, at the age of 26, at the Norton County Hospital.
 Kayla attended Norton County High School in Norton, Kansas, graduating in 2013. 
 Kayla’s whole world revolved around her daughter, Nevaeh, she worked
 very hard to provide the best life for her. She worked in a nursing 
home and was currently working at Subway.
 Kayla is survived by her mother, Carol Lynne King and her 
stepfather, Larry King of Norton, Kansas; daughter, Nevaeh King of 
Norton; brother, Chris Campbell of Oxford, KS; stepbrothers: Keith King 
of El Dorado, KS, James King of Nebraska, Ricky King of Norton, KS and 
Andrew King of Norton, KS; niece, Dakota Campbell; companion, Taylor 
Todd; special friend Theresa Gallentine and numerous other family 
members and friends.

Kayla Lynn Campbell

Quentanna Marie “Quen” McGlynn, 57, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away on November 12, 2021, at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons. She was born November 24, 1963, in Fort Morgan, Colorado, the daughter of Phil Williams and Joyce Cramwell/Hagler. Quen has resided in Lyons since 1976, formerly of Ness City, Kansas. 

She graduated from Lyons High School with the class of 1982 and continued her education earning certificates as a Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Nurse Aide, and Rehabilitation Aide. Quen worked at Good Samaritan Society of Lyons for nineteen and a half years as a CNA, CMA, RA, van driver and assisted the residents with activities. She has worked at Sterling Village as a RA and activities director since July of 2021. 

Quen was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons, and a 4-H Club leader. She judged cooking at the Kansas State Fair. Quen enjoyed being outdoors, canning, sewing, tending to her chickens, and most of all spending time with her family. On June 12, 1982, Quen was united in marriage with Kevin McGlynn in Lyons. He survives of the home. 

She is also survived her father, Phil Williams and wife Teresa of Baldwin City, KS; mother, Joyce Dudenhoeffer and husband Don of Bronson, KS; three children, Amie Moore and husband Michael of Columbus, OH, Sarah Johnson and husband Brock of Hutchinson, KS, and Jason McGlynn and fiancé Sarah Malott of Hays, KS; six siblings, Amanda Taylor, DeeDee Hartman, T.J. Larkin, Brian Williams, Boe Williams, and Travis Williams; uncle and aunt, Jim and Jan Black of Loveland, CO; five grandchildren, Jessamee Moore, Emily Moore, Chloie Johnson, Beau Johnson, and Barrett Johnson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Quen is preceded in death by her brother, Jason Kenneth Williams; paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Marge Williams; and maternal grandparents, Harold and Elise Hagler. 

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, November 18, 2021, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Lyons with Father Michael Brungardt officiating. Burial will follow. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M with a rosary at 7:00 P.M. 

Memorials may be given to St. Paul Catholic Church, Rice County 4-H Club, or Sterling Village (for the resident’s activities fund) in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.&nbsp;

Brett C. Kendrick, age 62, passed away on Saturday, November 13, 
2021, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on 
October 15, 1959 in Scott City, Kansas, the son of Emerson Earl &amp; 
Marilyn Mae Spellman Kendrick.&nbsp; A lifetime resident of Scott City, 
Kansas, he was a Farmer and Advanced EMT for the Scott County EMS.

He was a member of the Immanuel Southern Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On September 6, 1980 he married Kendra Wren in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She survives.

Survivors include his Wife - Kendra Kendrick of Scott City, Kansas, 
Two Sons - Todd &amp; Lauren Kendrick of Topeka, Kansas, Trace &amp; 
Stephanie Kendrick of Wichita, Kansas, Mother - Marilyn Kendrick of 
Scott City, Kansas, One Sister - Annette &amp; Chris Shultz of Paola, 
Kansas, and Three Grandchildren - Kash Kendrick &amp; Briar Kendrick of 
Topeka, Kansas, and Shepherd Kendrick of Wichita, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his Father, and One Nephew - Ryan Shultz.

at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas with Pastor Don

Michael D. Heinrich, age 61, passed away on Saturday, November 13, 
2021, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born 
on January 28, 1960 in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Gale Dean and 
Sharon Sue Thomas Heinrich.&nbsp; A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, 
he was a truck driver for Concrete Industries.

Michael D. Heinrich

Van William "Bill" Cloyd Jr., of Sharon Springs, KS, passed away at 
Goodland Regional Medical Center November 11, 2021 at the age of 80.

Bill was born in Haviland, KS on July 7, 1941. He was the youngest of
 nine children born to Van William Cloyd Sr. and Lola Mildred (Ellis) 
Cloyd. When he was just two years old the family moved to Wallace 
County.

Bill attended school in Weskan, until he gave up his senior year to 
join the US Army. He was enlisted in the MIlitary Police dog handler 
school. Bill and his dog Rex were sent overseas to Korea. Upon returning
 home due to the passing of his father, he was stationed at Ft Riley, 
KS. Bill served for six years in the Army. After which he was honorably 
discharged he became a night marshal in St Francis, KS then moved to 
Eaton, CO and was on the police force. He later returned to Kansas and 
was employed by Garvey Elevator as a truck driver. While working for 
Smokey Valley Bean in Sharon Springs he bought his own truck and started
 driving for himself and became an owner operator leased to WKTI. After 
he sold his truck he started driving for Yellow Freight out of Goodland,
 KS and then was employed by ABF until his retirement. Unable to sit 
still he worked part time for Hennick Lumber and Justin Schemm Farms.

He was most proud of being commander of the VFW Post 6844 in Sharon 
Springs for 25 years. He also really enjoyed spending time at coffee 
club visiting with the guys.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Betty Jane Harris, 
Gladys Miller, Velma Stephens and Beunola Hill; brothers Harold Cloyd, 
Dale Cloyd and Phil Cloyd and in-laws Ronald and Amelia Bricker.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years Laura Cloyd, children Len 
Cloyd, Lance (Miranda) Cloyd, Vanessa Cloyd, Kalin Cloyd, Jackie 
Battistoni, Rodney Cloyd, Tony Cloyd, Glenda (Greg) Walstrom, and his 
sister Marvel Armstrong, along with many grandchildren and great 
grandchildren.

Minister Ervin Nightengale was born to Abraham and Elizabeth Wedel 
Nightengale on July 18, 1922, in Montezuma, Kansas. He passed away on 
November 12, 2021, at the age of 99 years, 3 months, and 25 days at the 
Scott County Hospital, Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; He moved with his family at a
 young age to Haskell County, Kansas where he grew to manhood, receiving
 his education at the local Independence School.

At the age of sixteen, Dad heard the call of God and became 
converted, never doubting that cornerstone of his faith. He was baptized
 into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, by Min. Ervin Harms on 
January 31, 1939, at Copeland, Kansas. Though life brought its 
challenges, Dad remained faithful to these vows to the very end.

On November 27, 1947, Dad was married to Juanita Unruh by Min. Ed. 
Frank at Copeland, Kansas, sharing a blessed life together of exactly 63
 years. To this union were born three sons. Dad loved each of his 
children and grandchildren, taking a special interest in the call of God
 to each one and rejoicing when forgiveness was found.

Dad was a farmer, never tiring of long days and hard work. He was 
deeply grateful for the material success he experienced, and very much 
rejoiced in the success of others as well. The reports his parents and 
others shared of the hardships of life in Russia made a lasting 
impression on his young mind and he was very grateful to God for the 
opportunities this new land afforded. As a family, we have been richly 
blessed by Dad’s vivid details, graphic expressions, and keen memories 
of life's experiences.

Dad was ordained to the Gospel Ministry on March 26, 1950, at Scott 
City, Kansas by Min. Frank Wenger. Evangelism became the interest and 
passion of his life, having a special way to bring to life the familiar 
accounts of the Bible in a convicting and memorable way. Dad was blessed
 with a remarkable memory, which served him well in his labors. The Gift
 on Calvary was often the subject of his messages and testimonies, being
 very dear to his heart. His last testimony was of preparedness only 
because of&nbsp;Calvary.

Those left to cherish his memory are three sons: James and Elaine 
Nightengale, Charles and Phyllis Nightengale, and Mark and Barbara 
Nightengale, all of Scott City, Kansas; nine grandchildren, twenty eight
 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Brothers in law 
Eugene and Janice Unruh; Sam Jr. and Jan Unruh, Montezuma, Kansas, 
sisters in law Vada Unruh, Maxine and Eldon Schmidt, Sylvia and Delton

Emerson Charles Ballentine, age 77, of Wallace, Kansas, passed away 
Tuesday, November 9, 2021. He was born December 20, 1943.&nbsp; He was raised
 in Wallace County by his maternal grandparents, Humphrey Barber and 
Ermma Neoma Langdon.

Emerson attended Winona School until he was needed to help on the 
farm full time.&nbsp; He met and married Virginia Beckner of Goodland on June
 16, 1963.&nbsp; They had five sons, Charles Leon, Sonney, Corey, Daniel, 
James; and one daughter, Tina.&nbsp;

Emerson was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great 
grandfather, mentor, and friend.&nbsp; He was a hard worker, he started out 
in farming and eventually started his own carpet laying company.&nbsp; Many 
of the family has worked and learned under his care.&nbsp; His house was 
always open with a pot of coffee on.&nbsp; He always had time to talk and a 
heart full of love for family, and you didn’t need to be blood related 
to be a child of his.&nbsp; He was always ready with a calm word of wisdom or
 the latest joke he heard.&nbsp; His enjoyment was his family, the fishing 
bank, helping the boys with whatever they were working on, or just 
sitting quietly with mom watching t.v.&nbsp; He will be greatly missed.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife, Virginia of the home; son, Charles Leon 
Ballentine and wife Charina of Philippines; daughter, Tina Waterman and 
husband Scott of Oberlin; son, Sonney Ballentine and wife Barb of 
Wallace; son, Corey Ballentine and wife Tara of Wallace; son, Daniel 
Ballentine and wife Marilyn of Wallace; and son, James Ballentine and 
wife Cassandra of Wallace; He was also a father to Damon Rickard and 
wife Cassy; 28 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; sister, Julie 
Craig; best friend and brother-in-law, Bob Beckner and wife Dorothy; and
 brother-in-law Jerry and wife Gwen.

He has joined in heaven his grandparents; parents; sister, Connie Carpenter; and one grandson, J. Michael.

Helmut Johann Baptist Schmeller, 89, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away on November 10, 2021. 
Born in Bärnau, Germany, to Karl Schmeller and Walburga Schmeller, née 
Rosner. Growing up in Germany during WWII had a profound impact on his 
life and career as a German Historian. After teaching for several years 
at the Amberg American Elementary School for US Forces in Erlangen, 
Germany he immigrated to the United States. Helmut went on to earn his 
Ph.D. at Kansas State University and had a long career at Fort Hays 
State University. 
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Wilma Schmeller, née 
Chaney; son Erik and wife Bev; son Mark and wife Junko and grandson 
William Takeshi. He also leaves behind his beloved sister Erna and 
nieces Ingrid and Jutta.
