It is with tremendously heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jay Dean Nickelson, 40, a beloved son, endearing husband, phenomenal father, and timeless friend. He departed this world September 19, 2024.

October 12, 1983, Jay was born to Oren and Diana (Keith) Nickelson in Hill City, Kansas. Even before he was old enough to walk, Jay was able to captivate the masses with his dimpled grin. He and his older brother, Jarrod, would eagerly explore the farm and embark on exploratory outings any chance they had, often causing their mother to panic. As Jay grew older, so intensified his ornery nature and sense of adventure. He would brave nature and spend hours playing outside, making friends with wildlife, including his childhood pet racoon, Sammy. Diana taught Jay to dance at an early age. This led to a love of dancing and many polka turns around the dance floor for years to come. Even at a young age, he was a favorite among his peers. He could talk anyone into joining his causes or nefarious shenanigans, convincing others by means of contagious grin and infectious laughter. He would share stories with classmates and friends about the farm, especially about his pets and the many rattlesnakes. He participated in little league wrestling and made it to the State Championship in 1996. He brought immeasurable joy to those around him, always finding ways to create fun and mischief, even in the most inappropriate places (just ask his schoolteachers).

Jay’s teenage years continued with laughter, adventure, and a love for life that never waned. He was also a great pole vaulter, earning second place at the Kansas State Track Meet his junior year of high school; unfortunately, his senior season was cut short when his pole broke, resulting in a broken ankle. Jay also exuded pride for his high school ride—a ’79 Bronco that he hoped to restore someday. Overall, Jay enjoyed being among friends and family. He often reminisced about the many fun ski trips he took. To be honest, most of the stories cannot be safely shared in a public setting today. However, these stories were always best told by Jay.

In 2002, Jay graduated from Hill City High School and went on to complete the Power Lineman program at Pratt Community College in 2004. He was then and remains today a favorite among the masses.

Jay shared a profound bond with both Diana and Oren, whom he lost in 2004. These relationships shaped his values, instilling in him a strong work ethic and a determination to live life to the fullest. His passion for farming and cattle was evident from an early age; he cherished the opportunity to build a farming and cattle operation alongside his mother on the very land that has been in the Keith family for generations. Jay and Diana had a special relationship not just as mother and son but as friends and business partners, up to the very end.

An avid motorcyclist, Jay was a proud member of the self-proclaimed SHOZNBOX gang, where he shared countless exhilarating rides and unforgettable memories with friends. Additionally, his commitment to community was showcased during his decade-long service on the Graham County Fair Board, where he helped create memories for many, particularly during the annual Tuff Trux events. He helped others in their time of need, and he brought people together – oftentimes through animated sarcastic storytelling and acts of kindness.

Jay was a wild one no one would ever settle down until he met the love of his life Whitney DuBois in late 2008. Jay and Whitney shared many fun memories with friends, bike trips to Sturgis and Colorado and countless weekends running wells, checking cows and country cruising. The two were married in a beautiful one-of-a-kind ceremony at the family farm June 6, 2015. Jay was full of charm, always quick to give loving compliments, and more than a few smart ass jokes to Whitney, always knowing how to make her smile.

Together they created a loving family. Jay was a wonderful father to their three beautiful children: daughters Kimber (7) and Remington (6), and son Gatlin Oren (2), Jay took immense pride in his children, always eager to share the values and traditions that shaped his own life. Teaching them the joys of country living, he instilled a strong work ethic that would guide them through their journeys. Every step of the way, Jay navigated life with humor and sarcasm; even at the most inappropriate times, he would delight those around him with jokes that only Jay could formulate.

Whether it was ranger rides to check cows, visiting friends that are more like family, or simply enjoying the beauty of the farm, he cherished every moment spent with his family. His legacy will live on in his children as they carry forward and practice his valuable lessons of hard work, resilience, and simple pleasures of rural life.

Although Jay never seemed to be in a hurry, as he always had time to converse with everyone, he was passionate about his work and was a true perfectionist at heart. Jay believed that if something was worth doing, it was worth doing right.

This dedication to quality was evident in every aspect of his life, including his farming and cattle practices, every straight fence line on the cattle working barn he built in 2017, after visiting 10+ barns to get his plans just right, of course. Jay farm, the corrals he built and welded, and the amazing also ran a successful oil pumping business in Graham, Sheridan and Gove Counties. His quality work paying off with new wells being offered on his very last day.

His social nature drew people to him; he never hesitated to lend a helping hand to those in need, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he encountered. His personality matched his one-in-a-million smile that was punctuated with dimples and glimmered with kindness. He lit up a room simply by being in it. His dimples often got him both in and out of trouble. Jay’s presence was always uplifting; his joy for life, appreciation for simplicity, and his love for family and friends made him one of a kind. There will never be another like Jay, but his actions and memory will inspire others to move and act as he did—with unwavering kindness, genuine character, and vibrant spirit.

Jay was preceded in death by his father Oren Dean Nickelson and his older brother Jarrod Nickelson, his father-in-law, Dave DuBois, and a niece Danielle DuBois. Jay is survived by his loving wife, Whitney; his three beautiful children, Kimber, Remington and Gatlin; and his mother, Diana Nickelson, all of Penokee; mother-in-law Tami DuBois, and Vance; nieces and nephews Corgan, Caine, Cope Nickelson, Abby, Madi, Aubrey, and Drew DuBois; Teigen, and Grayson DuBois. He is also survived by countless friends and family who were blessed to know him.

Jay took immense pride in the farm wanting the important events in his life on this sentimental ground. Following Jays’ wishes, he will be laid to rest in a private burial service in the pasture overlooking the farm that he had worked so hard for.

The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the first responders whose kindness and compassion did not go unnoticed and provided comfort during a difficult time. We also want to thank our dear friends and neighbors who came together to finish baling Jay’s hay; your generosity and support have truly exemplified the strength of our community. Lavesta Mae (Enslow) Binder, age 90, of Colby, Kansas, passed away on September 20,2024. She was born on July 26, 1934, in Lakin, Kansas. Lavesta was the youngest of six children born to Phil and Ruby (Wiatt) Enslow. Lavesta was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who took immense pride in her family.

Lavesta met the love of her life, Jim Binder, at the Kansas State Fair. She knew it was love at first sight. Jim and Lavesta were married October 9, 1955, and later made their permanent home in Colby KS. To this union five children were born, Roger Dale, Robert Allen, Ronald Wayne, Laura Ann and Lynette Marie. Jim and Lavesta were married 44 years before the Lord called Jim home.

Lavesta dedicated close to 50 years of her life to nursing. She earned her nursing diploma from Grace School of Nursing in Hutchinson, KS, in 1955 and worked at hospitals in Hutchinson, St. Thomas Hospital and Citizen's Medical Center in Colby. Lavesta's passion for caring for others was evident throughout her career.

Outside of her professional life, Lavesta had a variety of interests and hobbies. She enjoyed arts and crafts, particularly painting Santa Clauses, as well as sewing and quilting. Lavesta's creativity and talent shone through her artistic endeavors.

Lavesta was a devoted member of Colby United Methodist Church, where she found solace and community. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she found comfort in her religious community.

Lavesta was preceded in death by her husband Jim; her son Roger; granddaughter Rebecca; her parents, Phil and Ruby Enslow; brothers, Roy Enslow, Leonard Enslow, Leslie Enslow and Dallas Enslow and sister Twila Woods.

Lavesta is survived by and will be deeply missed, by her children, Robert (Cindy) Binder, Ron (Tera) Binder, Laura (Troy) Bosserman, and Lynette (Bo) Downs and daughter-in-law Robin Binder. She was a cherished grandmother/great grandmother to Kally Binder, Anna (Adam) McAsey and children Aiden and Adelyn, Eric Binder and JJ Schutz, Donnie Binder, Heather Binder and children Jaxsyn and Connor, Shelly Binder, Wiatt (Margret) Binder and children Finn and Rose, Jonathan (Nastasja) Bosserman and daughter Hattie, Tom (Rianon) Franklin and children Bruce and Maverick, Kathe Franklin (Chris Puentes) and children Sophia and Rey, Malea (William) Barrett and children Mason, Rosaleigh, Christian and Thomas. Karen Kay (LeRoy) Westhusin passed away on September 21, 2024, at Redbud Village in Plainville, KS, at the age of 60. She was born on October 21, 1963, to Kenneth Ray and Orpha Alice (Witt) LeRoy in Great Bend, KS. Karen married Fred R. Westhusin on December 29, 1995, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. They were blessed with two children: Isaac and Kathryn.

Karen grew up on a farm by Hudson, KS. She graduated from Montezuma High School in 1982. She then attended Barton Community College where she received her Associate’s Degree as a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant.

From a young age, Karen’s passion for flowers blossomed during a floral class in high school, sparking a lifelong dream of owning a flower shop. She brought that dream to life by crafting her own wedding flowers. Karen was skilled in various crafts, including knitting and crocheting, often creating heartfelt gifts for family and friends.

An active volunteer, Karen dedicated her time to the local food pantry, blood drives, and funeral dinners, always ready to lend a hand to those in need. She also served as past member of the DOI and was a member of the Rooks County Health Center Auxiliary.

Outside her professional and volunteer endeavors, Karen cherished moments spent camping, attending the Rooks County Fair where her children showcased their animals, and traveling to visit family. She had a special tradition of baking and mailing sugar cookies to her nieces and nephews on Valentine’s Day and holidays, spreading sweetness and love.

Karen leaves behind a legacy of creativity, kindness, and joy. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Karen is survived by her husband, Fred of Natoma, KS; children, Isaac and Kathryn Westhusin both of Plainville; brother, Mike (Jessie) LeRoy of St. John, KS; sisters, Kathy (Jerry) Hinde of Windsor, CO and Kristy (Mark) Moore of Shawnee, KS; several nieces and nephews; and her dog Tillie.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Orpha LeRoy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at 10:30AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Visitation will be on Wednesday, 6-8PM with a Vigil and Rosary Service at 7PM at the Church.

Janet Juneil Holmes McDowell, daughter of Erma Twila Burgess Holmes and Garth Macy Holmes was born on November 23, 1935 in rural Smith Center. Janet departed this earthly life to be with her Lord and Savior on September 19, 2024 at the age of 88 years at Smith Center Health and Rehabilitation.

Janet grew up on the family farm south of Smith Center, Kansas, surrounded by three siblings making for a lively household. As third of four stair stepdaughters, Janet was active in the many household chores of the day. While living on the farm, Janet often recalled walking over the hill to school. Janet then stayed in town during the weekdays to attend high school.

Janet met the love of her life at a local dance. Janet married Duane Alvin ‘John’ McDowell on August 1, 1954. They made their home in Smith Center and later purchased the farm of Chris and Mary Frydendall north of Bellaire. They raised their four children: Lana, Lori, Lance and Lia.

Janet was active in her church; the Smith Center Congregational Church, as Sunday School teacher and choir member. Janet was also active in Custer Bible Study and ladies groups including playing bridge weekly and bowling. Later in life, Janet enjoyed singing with the Lebanon Music Club. While raising her family, she also traveled with John as he coached the Lebanon Women’s Softball team building lifelong relationships with these women as the entire family traveled and participated.

Janet was preceded in death by her beloved John, grandchildren Trevor and Travis Wells and his son in law Randall LaDow. Janet Juneil Holmes McDowell, daughter of Erma Twila Burgess Holmes and Garth Macy Holmes was born on November 23, 1935 in rural Smith Center. Janet departed this earthly life to be with her Lord and Savior on September 19, 2024 at the age of 88 years at Smith Center Health and Rehabilitation.Janet grew up on the family farm south of Smith Center, Kansas, surrounded by three siblings making for a lively household. As third of four stair stepdaughters, Janet was active in the many household chores of the day. While living on the farm, Janet often recalled walking over the hill to school. Janet then stayed in town during the weekdays to attend high school.Janet met the love of her life at a local dance. Janet married Duane Alvin ‘John’ McDowell on August 1, 1954. They made their home in Smith Center and later purchased the farm of Chris and Mary Frydendall north of Bellaire. They raised their four children: Lana, Lori, Lance and Lia.Janet was active in her church; the Smith Center Congregational Church, as Sunday School teacher and choir member. Janet was also active in Custer Bible Study and ladies groups including playing bridge weekly and bowling. Later in life, Janet enjoyed singing with the Lebanon Music Club. While raising her family, she also traveled with John as he coached the Lebanon Women’s Softball team building lifelong relationships with these women as the entire family traveled and participated.Janet was preceded in death by her beloved John, grandchildren Trevor and Travis Wells and his son in law Randall LaDow. Phillipsburg resident, Bernettia “Bert” Follis passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 92.

She was born August 27, 1932 in Kirwin, KS the daughter of Jess W. and Myrtle E. (Power) Sherling.

On August 29, 1954 in Phillipsburg, KS she was united in marriage to Norman C. Follis. &nbsp;He survives.

Other survivors include a daughter Menta Macy and husband Don of Owatonna, MN; 6 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and 6 great great granddaughters.

Cremation was planned. &nbsp;A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 27, 2024 at the First Christian Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating. &nbsp;Inurnment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Sonya B. Montgomery, 89, formerly of Norton, passed away September 16, 2024, at Village Shalom in Overland Park, KS. She was born June 2, 1935 in Norton, KS to Cale A. and Sarah J. (Mattson) Sleffel.

Sonya grew up on a farm ten miles south of Norton. Her parents instilled in her values of faith in God, hard work, integrity, and service. Although she did not appreciate farm chores growing up, she later recognized the myriad lessons that farm life provided. Those lessons included gratitude, perseverance, and generosity.

Sonya attended a one-room schoolhouse during her elementary school years and continued her secondary education in the Norton Public School system. She was an excellent student and an accomplished musician. Sonya graduated from Norton Community High School in 1952.

Sonya married LeRoy V. Peil on December 21, 1952, in Norton. They lived for a short time in California while LeRoy served in the United States Navy. Upon returning to Norton, they established a home and began a family. They had four children, three of whom survived to adulthood. Sonya and LeRoy divorced in 1980.

A few years later, Sonya married Rex D. Montgomery on November 20, 1982, in Norton. Although they finally settled in Almena, they enjoyed living and working in McPherson, Kansas for several years.

Sonya’s first job, at age fourteen, was at the Norton Theater. In between taking tickets and balancing the cash box at the end of the evening, she occasionally watched a movie. Sonya felt that the free movie viewing was the best job perk ever.

As an adult, Sonya worked as an office manager, a realtor, a property investor, and a newspaper columnist. She worked continuously into her seventies. Sonya strove always to work with excellence, as though working for the Lord.

Sonya was a member of the Kansas Association of Realtors, the Manhattan Christian College Advisory Board, and the Norton Andbe Home Board of Directors. She enjoyed organizing NCHS All School Alumni Reunions, and also contributed to the growth and sustainability of the Haven House in Norton.

Sonya’s hobbies included hand quilting, cross-stitching, and bridge. However, music was her passion. At age nine, she began accompanying the Sunday school music at the Norton Christian Church. She remained an integral part of the church’s music ministry for over seventy years.

Sonya taught piano and played for funerals, weddings, and other special occasions. She spent many years as an accompanist for the Norton Public Schools' music department. She accompanied vocal concerts, and district, regional, and state music festivals and competitions. She passionately supported music in public education.

During her time as a columnist for the Norton Telegram, she wrote, "Laughter and music have been proven to impact our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. May you always have a song in your heart and on your lips."

Sonya certainly instilled the love of music in the hearts of her children and grandchildren just as her mother and father did for her. She proudly accompanied for her children at church services, school events, or any other community engagements. She also had a front-row seat at many of her children’s and grandchildren’s performances.

Sonya’s life was one well lived. She experienced joy, laughter, love, sorrow, and disappointment throughout her earthly journey. But as she reflected in one of her newspaper columns, "All memories are not sweet and happy ones, but the variety is what makes life - life. If we never loved, we would not have pain. If we never had pain, we would not know the joy to love and to be loved. Sort through your memories, and may the joyous ones be the ones you dwell upon each day."

Sonya is survived by her children: Michael L. (Claudia) Peil of Bonita Springs, FL, Alan R. (Lisa Laham) Peil of Wichita, KS, and Fonda L. (Thomas) Telthorst of Kansas City, KS; stepchildren: Monte (Staci) Montgomery of Almena, KS and Jeris (Reuben) Bartel of Meade, KS; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, many cousins who lovingly call her Sonnie, and faithful friends.

Sonya was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, LeRoy Peil and Rex Montgomery; sister Shirley Ricketts; infant son Todd Peil; and granddaughter Jessica (Peil) Claybrook.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the Norton Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery. Helen was born January 25, 1935, in Washington Township, Smith County, KS, the daughter of Wardie M. and Lavina C. (Carver) Hawkins.&nbsp; Helen attended grade school at Dewey and graduated from the Smith Center Hight School.

On&nbsp;March 30, 1956,&nbsp;Helen married Leland Baetz&nbsp;at&nbsp;the&nbsp;First Christian Church, Smith Center, KS. To this union they were blessed with five children, Russell Eugene, Sharlyn Kay, Judith Lynn, Larry Duane and Kevin Wayne.

She was preceded in death by&nbsp;her parents, husband&nbsp;Leland, son Larry Duane&nbsp;at the age of 3 years, brother Duane Hawkins, sister Melva Jean Hawkins, son-in-law Milo Shellito, and nephew Jerry Hawkins.

Helen&nbsp;is survived by two sons, Russell (Karen) Baetz and Kevin (Kim) Baetz all of Smith Center; two daughters, Sharlyn Shellito and Judith (Wayne) Hyman all of Smith Center; two&nbsp;sisters-in-law, Maydeen Hawkins of Smith Center, Norma Schriner of Axtel, NE and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dorothy M. Stiles, age 90, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at her home in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on June 29, 1934, in Osage County, Kansas, the daughter of John George Jacob &amp; Etta Elizabeth Morgan Dague. A resident of Scott County, Kansas since 1965 moving from Wichita County, Kansas, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Prairie View Church of the Brethren in Friend, Kansas, and served on leadership boards at Prairie View Church.

On November 17, 1957, she married Ira Vern Stiles in Friend, Kansas. He survives.

Survivors include her Husband - Ira Vern Stiles of Scott City, Kansas, Four Daughters - Cynthia Baker of Marienthal, Kansas, Debra &amp; Greg Dirks of Scott City, Kansas, Elizabeth Shirk of Johnson, Kansas, Lisa &amp; Darrel DeVine of Freedom, Oklahoma, One Sister - Betty Dague of Garden City, Kansas, Eleven Grandchildren, and Six Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, One Sister - Thelma Lehman, Two Brothers - Roy Dague and Robert Dague, and Two Son-In-Laws - August Baker and David Shirk.

Steven Matthew Wells, 59, of Olathe, KS died on September 19, 2024.&nbsp; He came into this world kicking and screaming on August 12, 1965 at the Russell City Hospital, Russell, KS. &nbsp; Steve is the son of Marion “Smokey” Lee Wells and Diana Lynn Mai (Milberger).&nbsp; He was born and raised in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in 1983.&nbsp; He went on to Salina Vo Tech for Auto Mechanics school to follow in his Grandpa Jake Milberger footsteps.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Steve was united into marriage to Melinda Suzanne Keberlein on February 18, 1995 in Russell, KS.&nbsp; He became very involved in the Russell community with spear heading the campaign to Keep the Dream Alive.&nbsp; He retired as Captain for the Russell Fire Department after completing 26 years of service, worked for the City of Russell Waste Water department, and worked as a Waste Water Site Manager for Ecolab in Gardner, KS.&nbsp;

Steve is survived by his wife Melinda, parents Diana and Mike Mai, mother Vicki Wells, grandmother Jean Mai, brothers Stephen and Josh Wells (Sammi), sisters Morgan Covert (Ben) and Elizabeth Horton (Eric), his children, Lindsay Billiter (Jon), Bryan Hendrich (Brandi), Rachel Wells (Jason Wright), niece Jenny Wells, grandchildren, Cora, Peyton, Zaidyn, and Quintyn, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded into death by his father Marion “Smokey” Lee Wells, sister Annetta Wells, brother Rex Wells, maternal grandmother and grandfather Myrna and Jake Milberger, his paternal grandmother and grandfather Frank and Ester Wells, grandfather David Mai, and mother in law, Peggy Keberlein.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell.&nbsp; Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 24th from 9am-8pm at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler with family present from 6pm-8pm. &nbsp; In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Russell Fire Department, Russell Dream Theatre, and/or Randi’s Rockin Dachshund Rescue, Leavenworth, KS.&nbsp; Contributions and condolences may be sent to the Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

 </figure>Steven Matthew Wells, 59, of Olathe, KS died on September 19, 2024.&nbsp; He came into this world kicking and screaming on August 12, 1965 at the Russell City Hospital, Russell, KS. &nbsp; Steve is the son of Marion “Smokey” Lee Wells and Diana Lynn Mai (Milberger).&nbsp; He was born and raised in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in 1983.&nbsp; He went on to Salina Vo Tech for Auto Mechanics school to follow in his Grandpa Jake Milberger footsteps.&nbsp;&nbsp;Steve was united into marriage to Melinda Suzanne Keberlein on February 18, 1995 in Russell, KS.&nbsp; He became very involved in the Russell community with spear heading the campaign to Keep the Dream Alive.&nbsp; He retired as Captain for the Russell Fire Department after completing 26 years of service, worked for the City of Russell Waste Water department, and worked as a Waste Water Site Manager for Ecolab in Gardner, KS.&nbsp;Steve is survived by his wife Melinda, parents Diana and Mike Mai, mother Vicki Wells, grandmother Jean Mai, brothers Stephen and Josh Wells (Sammi), sisters Morgan Covert (Ben) and Elizabeth Horton (Eric), his children, Lindsay Billiter (Jon), Bryan Hendrich (Brandi), Rachel Wells (Jason Wright), niece Jenny Wells, grandchildren, Cora, Peyton, Zaidyn, and Quintyn, and numerous nieces and nephews.He was proceeded into death by his father Marion “Smokey” Lee Wells, sister Annetta Wells, brother Rex Wells, maternal grandmother and grandfather Myrna and Jake Milberger, his paternal grandmother and grandfather Frank and Ester Wells, grandfather David Mai, and mother in law, Peggy Keberlein.Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell.&nbsp; Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 24th from 9am-8pm at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler with family present from 6pm-8pm. &nbsp; In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Russell Fire Department, Russell Dream Theatre, and/or Randi’s Rockin Dachshund Rescue, Leavenworth, KS.&nbsp; Contributions and condolences may be sent to the Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Troy Lee Rebel, 60, passed away on September 4, 2024, in Platte City, Missouri. Born on September 9, 1963, in Ness City, Kansas, to Darlene Werth and Ralph Rebel, Troy spent his childhood keeping his parents on their toes while making countless memories with his siblings, Jay, Penny, and Jeff.

As an adult, Troy completed his apprenticeship in 1989 and devoted over 30 years to his career as a dedicated Lineman and Supervisor for Westar Energy. His strong work ethic helped keep power flowing to countless communities. Known for his tireless drive, Troy never let the grass grow under his feet. His colleagues admired his loyalty, grit, and willingness to lend a hand at a moment’s notice. Troy truly embraced life, whether he was cruising the open road with the Steel Horses Motorcycle Club in Kansas City or finding peace at Wilson Lake with a fishing pole in hand. His love for adventure was matched only by his passion for the Kansas City Chiefs, where he was known for his over-the-top high fives to any fan lucky enough to be nearby.

Troy’s adventurous spirit extended beyond the road and water. He loved the thrill of jumping out of airplanes, traveling the country, and relaxing at the beach with his daughter Adrea in Florida. He had a knack for bringing joy to any situation, even if that meant showing off his impromptu dance moves in an airport baggage claim. At home, Troy was passionate about gardening and a canning connoisseur, often sharing his famous salsa with friends and family. But what he loved most was showing off his son Tyler’s three beautiful grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as Papa Troy. Troy’s love for his family was unwavering.

He is survived by his father, Ralph (Bonnie) Rebel; his children, Adrea Rebel (Jamie) Garrison, Tyler (Tiffany) Rebel, Macie (Cory) Rebel-Kidwell, and Olivia Rebel; and his beloved grandchildren, Kinsley, Kasen, and Crew Rebel and Emilia and Ezra Rebel-Kidwell. Darlene M. (Werth) Williams, age 85, of Hays, Kansas passed away on September 20, 2024, at Homestead of Hays, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on August 13, 1939, to Severin and Adeline (Befort) Werth in Schoenchen, Kansas, and led a life filled with love, laughter, and a passion for beauty.

Darlene made a significant mark in her community as a longtime beautician, owning her own salon, Darlene's Beauty Salon. She proudly operated her business first in Schoenchen, then Hays, and later in Kansas City. Her warm and welcoming demeanor along with her professional expertise made everyone feel welcome. Known for her lovely smile and caring nature, Darlene was a person who thrived on connection and joy, rarely wanting to spend time alone.

In addition to her career, Darlene had a variety of interests that enriched her life. She enjoyed cooking and was particularly proud of her time spent preparing meals for the Capuchin Friars while living in Hays. Darlene had a green thumb, with a passion for flower gardening and making beautiful floral arrangements that brightened many spaces. She also was a proud supporter of the American Legion in Olathe, Kansas.

Darlene's family was her greatest treasure. She is survived by her son, JD Rebel and wife Denise of Wichita, Kansas; her daughter, Penny Myers and husband Craig of Ness City, Kansas; stepsons, Todd Williams and wife Lea Anne, Brian Williams and Brad Williams all of the Kansas City area; her brother, Severin Werth Jr and Marjorie Dansel of Hays, Kansas; her sister, Sharon Unrein of Louisburg, Kansas; along with her adored grandchildren: Beau Rebel, Derek Rebel, Dustin Myers, Brady Myers, Nathan Myers, Adrea Garrison, Tyler Rebel, Macie Rebel Kidwell, and Olivia Rebel. She was also the proud great-grandmother of Brynn, Jaxson, Adeline, Emmalynn, Adler, Ada, Kinsley, Kasen, Crew, Emilia, and Ezra.

Darlene was preceded in death by her loving parents, her husband, a son, Troy Rebel, and her sister, Patty Coker. While she is deeply missed, her legacy of love, beauty, and community service will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Monday, September 23, 2024 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Schoenchen. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.

Rosa Lee Cook (Workman), 69, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center. Born on February 28, 1955, in Parsons, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Charles Workman and Alleta (Helmick) Workman.

Rosa was one of three children and was known for her joyful spirit, love of nature, and warm heart. She married her first husband, Walter Rollins Jr., with whom she had two children: a son, Walter Rollins III, and a daughter, Kristy Lynn Rollins. Following their later divorce, Rosa found love again and married Larry E. Cook on October 19, 2007, forming a beautiful, blended family in Laredo, Texas.

She had a deep love for life’s simple pleasures. She enjoyed true camping—tents, not campers—fully immersing herself in nature’s beauty. Her passion for games was shared with those around her. She excelled at board games, card games, and puzzles, delighting in playing with family and friends. Rosa’s kind heart and competitive spirit made every game night memorable, leaving her loved ones with cherished memories.

Rosa was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Walter Rollins III; her brother, Richard Workman; her father- and mother-in-law, Alfred and Dorothy Cook; her stepdaughter, Sheree J. Chestnut; her step-granddaughter, Tristan Baker; and her step-great-granddaughter, Ramona Chestnut.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Larry Cook of Wichita, Kansas; her loving sister, Brenda of Georgia; and her daughter, Kristy (Albert) Mendoza of Laredo, Texas. She also leaves behind two stepdaughters: Sindi (Joe Miller) Baker of Glasgow, Montana, and Lacey Cook of Wichita, Kansas; four stepsons: Shad (Bonnie) Cook and Shawn Cook, both of Gove, Kansas; Shaylon (Cassie) Cook of Glasgow, Montana; and Joshua (Gabriela Gonzalez) Cook of Wichita, Kansas.

Rosa is also survived by one grandson, Trey Mendoza; 25 step-grandchildren; 26 step-great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Wayne (Mary) Cook; and numerous extended family members and friends who loved her dearly.

Rosa’s love for family, her joyous spirit, and her playful soul will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, fun, and unshakeable love.

Virginia Lee
(Brockman) Jensen was born December 18, 1930, in Kansas City, Kansas, to the
late Furn Owen Brockman, Sr., and Gladys Viola (Sterns) Brockman. She passed
away Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the Logan County Hospital in Oakley,
Kansas, at the age of 93.

Virginia was
born the fifth of twelve children. Childhood memories were treasured and, throughout the years,
generously shared with anyone willing to listen. To know Virginia is to cherish
her love of center stage. At the age of five, she started dancing under the
instruction of Paul Pagona. Virginia went on to dance professionally for four
years performing at United Service Organization (USO) shows in the Kansas City
area. She passed on her love of dancing by teaching tap, ballet, and
acrobatics. Virginia was never afraid to sing or dance – embracing every small
moment as an opportunity to perform. She believed in living life out loud.

On June 10, 1950, Virginia married Charles David ‘Dave’ Jensen at
the Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri. To this union,
five children were born: Kathleen Joy, Jacqulyn Fern, David ‘Duke’ Lee, Rebecca
Ann, and Cynthia Sue. The couple began their married life on the Jensen family
farm north of Hays, Kansas. In 1960, the family moved to Grinnell, Kansas,
where Virginia enjoyed being active in and around the Grinnell community. She
was a member of the American Guild of Variety Artists (AGVA), Alter Society,
PRIDE, Extension Homemakers Unit (EHU), and American Ag. She was also a 4-H
leader. Virginia loved decorating, cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, and a
good game of Nertz. Her outgoing, generous personality brought a smile to many.


Virginia’s faith was her guide and her family, her light. From the
very moment she and Dave met, life was navigated together. Whether dancing the
night away at the VFW, working side-by-side on the family farm, or lending a
helping hand to friends and strangers, they were never far apart. Theirs was a
love to remember.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dave;
siblings, Furn Brockman, Jr., Robert Brockman, infant twin brothers, Patricia
Brockman, Thomas Brockman, Carolyn Smith, and Jane Broski; and her grandson,
Nathan Beckman.

Left to carry on Virginia’s legacy are her five children, Kathleen
Beckman, Jacqulyn (Donald) Teeter, David ‘Duke’ Jensen, Rebecca (Dwight)
Williams, and Cynthia Combs. Cherished memories, songs, and dance will forever
live through her 17 grandchildren, Frederick (Cimber) Vogelgesang III, Jennifer
Vogelgesang, Daniel Vogelgesang, John (Evette) Beckman, Nathan Beckman
(1981-2017), Melissa (Roger) Byerly, Melanie (Craig) McDonough, Christopher
(April) Teeter, Meredith (Darris) Lewallen, Andrew Jensen (Ember Meadows),
Jessica Geist (D.J. Peterman), Patricia (Andrew) Starbuck, Tina (Craig)
Schoenberger, Lori (Josh) Bohnert, Susan (Zach) Moore, Andrea Turnbull
(Benjamin Chaffin), and Bailey (Eric) Nelson. Many unforgettable stories will
surely be passed to Virginia’s 39 great-grandchildren, 4 step
great-grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren, and 5 step great-great
grandchildren. According to her, all beautiful babies. Virginia will also be
remembered by her surviving siblings, Theodore (Carole) Brockman, Marilyn
Brockman-Weld, and Russell ‘Barney’ Brockman; her brothers-in-law, Jim Smith
and Fred Broski; her sister-in-law, Rossie Morgan; and many nieces, nephews,
and cousins.

(commonly known as Gram, Grammy, Bubble Grandma), sister, aunt, cousin, and

Troy Joe Anderson (November 26th, 1961 - September 16th, 2024)With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Troy Joe Anderson.&nbsp; Troy was a devoted father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend.&nbsp; He was the king of arm wrestling, the pool shark extraordinaire, and the fastest street racer in Agra, Kansas, who has now hung up his racing gloves. &nbsp;When Troy wasn't arm wrestling anyone who dared, horseback riding, having pac man marathons with Brandon, Brock and the crew, or tinkering with fast cars, he was creating memories with his family and kids.&nbsp; Who could forget cruising in his car, blasting music, and laughing together?!&nbsp; Or the countless hours he spent teaching his kids how to drive and survive (Tiffany's driving) on Kansas roads.&nbsp; Troy cherished sharing drives with his mother, Patty, creating lifelong memories and strengthening their unbreakable bond.&nbsp;

Troy's pride and joy were his kids: Tiffany Garcia, Troy Anderson Jr., Joshua Anderson, and Kendal Putman who all inherited Troy's mischievous&nbsp;grin and love for adventure.&nbsp; Troy's grandchildren: Ethan Hemphill, Bryson Stapleton, Zayden Garcia, Cylas Anderson, and Reighny Anderson all brought immense delight to his life.&nbsp; Troy's family extended far beyond humans, as Matty, Baby, and Snowball held a special place in his heart.&nbsp;

Carlyle Aron Thompson, Manhattan, Kansas, passed away on
Sunday, September 15, 2024, at the age of 88.&nbsp;
Carlyle (aka Carly to family and friends) was born on June 26, 1936, to
Marvin and Ora Thompson in Kansas City, KS.&nbsp; He was raised in Shawnee,
Kansas and graduated from Shawnee Mission High School.&nbsp; He participated in FFA and served as
president his senior year.&nbsp; He obtained
his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Soil Science and Plant Analysis from
Kansas State University in 1959.&nbsp; At KSU,
Carlyle met his wife, Sandra Jo Burge, and they married on June 7, 1959. &nbsp;They recently celebrated their 65th
wedding anniversary.

After living in Lincoln, NE and Lawton, OK, Carlyle and
Sandra settled in Hays, KS in 1963 where he worked for the KSU Agricultural
Research Center for 40 years.&nbsp; He performed
many studies on crops, soil analysis, tillage systems, and crop rotations on
plots.&nbsp; He developed narrow row planting
for sorghum and worked with many farmers.&nbsp;
He had a great love of planting vegetable gardens as well as judging
crops and vegetables at county fairs and the Kansas State Fair.

Carlyle had a love of music that he inherited from his
mother.&nbsp; Ora would play the piano or
organ and he would sing.&nbsp; He continued
singing throughout his life embracing the joy it would bring.&nbsp; He passed down his love of music to his
children and encouraged them as they grew. 

After his retirement, Carlyle and Sandra moved to Lenexa,
Kansas.&nbsp; He saw a need to start a food
pantry at the West Lenexa Seventh-Day Adventist Church and worked tirelessly
planning and gathering food to provide for those in need.&nbsp; After they moved to Manhattan, he volunteered
at the Senior Center for several years, again, helping people through their Friendship
Meals Program.

Carlyle’s faith in God was the most important part of his
life.&nbsp; He taught Sunday School at the
First United Methodist Church in Hays for many years.&nbsp; He was an elder in the West Lenexa
Seventh-Day Adventist Church and later the Manhattan Seventh-Day Adventist
Church where he enjoyed singing, preaching, and fellowship with the
congregants.&nbsp; 

Carlyle leaves behind his wife, Sandra and their children,
Curt (Glenda) of Hutchinson, KS, Lee Anne of Lawrence, KS, Chris of
Springfield, MO, Kent (Andrea) of Plano, TX and Rebecca (Tad) of Manhattan,
KS.&nbsp; He is also survived by his aunt,
Lois Flinn; sister-in law, Ann Ware; his five grandchildren, (Kyle, Laura,
Ella, Emery, and Evie); two great grandchildren (Nora and Molly) and many
cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother, Castle
Thompson; and his sister-in-law Joanne Thompson.

Visitation is planned for Monday, September 23, 2024, at
Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, Manhattan, KS, from 6:00 to 7:30
pm.&nbsp; His funeral will also be held at the
funeral home on Tuesday, September 24, at 10:00 am.

Yvonne Edith (Hughes) Azeltine, 91, of Milan passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Ripley Crossing- Milan, Indiana. Yvonne was born on Friday, September 16, 1932, in London, England; daughter of Harold and Eva (DeOrnavol) Hughes. Yvonne married the love of her life, Robert M. Azeltine Sr., on December 20, 1952, and he preceded her in death on December 16, 1997. She was a very proud military spouse and had loving family members who were in support of the Army, Air Force and Navy.

Yvonne worked for over 20 years as a surgical technician at Smith County Memorial Hospital in Smith Center, Kansas. She later worked at Kruger Maddux Greenhouse in Sunman, Indiana. Yvonne had many friends and loved visiting and going places with them. Yvonne enjoyed dancing, knitting, crocheting, playing piano, gardening, playing board games, coloring, playing euchre, and refurbishing furniture. Most of all Yvonne cherished her loving family.

Yvonne will be missed by her sons Robert (Yvonne) Azeltine Jr. of Bunker Hill, West Virginia; LeRoy (Mary Lou) Azeltine of Overland Park, Kansas; James (Debbie) Azeltine of Leawood, Kansas; daughter Charlene (Patrick) Holland of Moores Hill, Indiana; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild

Barabara Sue Tweedy was born September 11, 1939, in Carrollton Missouri to Averill and Eleanor Gonder (Musick), and passed away August 14, 2024, in Smith Center, Kansas at the age of 84. She attended school in Phillipsburg, Kansas following the families move there when she was a child. On August 19th, 1956, she was united in marriage to Kenneth (Slick) Tweedy. To this union four children were born: Kenneth K., Kyle K., Kip K. and Kristal K.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Barbara was very active in her community volunteering to help wherever she could. Many remember her as their den mother, Sunday School teacher or simply as “Auntie Barb”. She was an honorary member of the infamous “Haggled Hags” and participated in numerous activities with this close-knit group over the years. In 1974 Barbara bought the local garden center that soon became Tweedy’s Plants, Pots &amp; Posies where she shared numerous life events with customers in the community.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Barb spent time in Nebraska before venturing to California where she met many wonderful friends and explored the beautiful state before returning to the Phillipsburg area. She then met her soulmate David Bolte and together they resided in Republican City for nearly 20 years. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents Averill and Eleanor Gonder, brother Charles (Butch) Gonder, daughter Brenda Molzahn and son Kyle Tweedy. Survivors include Dave Bolte of Alma, NE, sisters Patricia Cleveland of Webber, KS, Katheryn Gonder of Mankato, KS, children Kenneth Tweedy Jr., &amp; wife Julie, Kip Tweedy &amp; wife Ginger, all of Phillisburg KS, and Kristal Harper &amp; husband John of Plattsmouth, NE. She was most proud to be Gran B to her 19 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Barbara was many things to many people, but to most that she met she was a friend for life. Friends and family were the biggest part of her life, and she was rich beyond measure for this. She will be deeply missed.

Barb Tweedy

Cheryl Lynn (Nay) Balls, age 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2024 surrounded by her family. Cheri was born on February 15, 1945 to Alva and Lela Nay of Glade, KS. She was an only child.

Cheri grew up on the farm in Glade. She loved to tell stories of riding her horse, Banner, and singing to the cows and chickens. Their home always held a lot of family gatherings. She went on to raise her own family with the same traditions, values, and morals.&nbsp;

Cheri married Tom Balls of Phillipsburg, KS on February 28, 1964. They made their home in Phillipsburg where they welcomed two children, Mike and Tami. Cheri went back to college and received her teaching degree in 1983. She taught for 30 years and loved all of her 3rd grade students. The impact she made on her many students over the years lives on today. She retired in 2005. To know Cheri was to love her. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and teacher.

Tom and Cheri loved to travel and enjoyed their many adventures including searching out and sampling the favorite local cuisine. Their dogs were well-traveled members of the family, treated to swimming in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico. Their animals were loved. Together, they made many happy memories from these adventures traveling from coast to coast, visiting forty-four of the fifty states of this great country.

Cheri was active in multiple clubs, led both the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and volunteered for several organizations that her children were involved in over the years. She was definitely a very present and involved parent!

She was an active and involved grandmother as well. She doted on and loved her grandkids. As she was able, she attended their various activities, sports events, and school programs. She traveled many places and miles and was their biggest supporter. She was always in the know of where her grandkids were at any time, putting everyone else first. As time went on and she was unable to physically attend events, she of course was still present by making provisions to be there through the use of technology.&nbsp;

Cheri was an amazing cook! She always made sure that at every family gathering, everyone had their favorite dish to enjoy. No one ever went hungry. She passed this love onto her kids and grandkids…they all love to cook and bake, and it’s all because of her.

Cheri didn’t forget or miss anything! She did everything for everyone else, and that is just a small part of what made her so special. She will be missed dearly by her family and those that have been touched by her love.&nbsp;

Cheri is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Tom, son Mike (Chris) Nay of Bennington, KS, and daughter Tami (Nick) Poels of Phillipsburg. She leaves behind her grandchildren Darren (Megan) Nay, Dani (Aaron) Bain, and Gabby and James Poels as well as great-grandchildren Emma Nay and Molly Nay (due in November). Cheri was preceded in death by her parents.

Cheri is going home. She will be laid to rest on the family farm in Glade, KS. As the matriarch of the family, she will be the first to be buried in the Nay family cemetery that’s just a stone’s throw away from the farmhouse where she grew up and the fields where she rode her horse. As the saying goes, “The best journey takes you home”.

A funeral service for Cheri Balls will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 20, 2024, at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, Kansas, with Pastor Ron Wedel officiating. Burial will follow at the Nay Family Cemetery.

Cheri will lie in state from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday and 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Phillips County Hospital.

 </figure>Cheryl Lynn (Nay) Balls, age 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2024 surrounded by her family. Cheri was born on February 15, 1945 to Alva and Lela Nay of Glade, KS. She was an only child.Cheri grew up on the farm in Glade. She loved to tell stories of riding her horse, Banner, and singing to the cows and chickens. Their home always held a lot of family gatherings. She went on to raise her own family with the same traditions, values, and morals.&nbsp;Cheri married Tom Balls of Phillipsburg, KS on February 28, 1964. They made their home in Phillipsburg where they welcomed two children, Mike and Tami. Cheri went back to college and received her teaching degree in 1983. She taught for 30 years and loved all of her 3rd grade students. The impact she made on her many students over the years lives on today. She retired in 2005. To know Cheri was to love her. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and teacher.Tom and Cheri loved to travel and enjoyed their many adventures including searching out and sampling the favorite local cuisine. Their dogs were well-traveled members of the family, treated to swimming in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico. Their animals were loved. Together, they made many happy memories from these adventures traveling from coast to coast, visiting forty-four of the fifty states of this great country.Cheri was active in multiple clubs, led both the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and volunteered for several organizations that her children were involved in over the years. She was definitely a very present and involved parent!She was an active and involved grandmother as well. She doted on and loved her grandkids. As she was able, she attended their various activities, sports events, and school programs. She traveled many places and miles and was their biggest supporter. She was always in the know of where her grandkids were at any time, putting everyone else first. As time went on and she was unable to physically attend events, she of course was still present by making provisions to be there through the use of technology.&nbsp;Cheri was an amazing cook! She always made sure that at every family gathering, everyone had their favorite dish to enjoy. No one ever went hungry. She passed this love onto her kids and grandkids…they all love to cook and bake, and it’s all because of her.Cheri didn’t forget or miss anything! She did everything for everyone else, and that is just a small part of what made her so special. Maryln Lee Boltin, 82, of Bunker Hill, Kansas, died on Friday, September 06, 2024, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

Maryln was born on May 07, 1942, in Kingman, Kansas, the daughter of Eugene and Elizabeth (Lord) Kaufman.&nbsp; She grew up in Kingman, Kansas, and graduated from Kingman High School in the class of 1960, and attended Pittsburg State University for 2 years.&nbsp; She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Arthur “Art” Boltin on August 25, 1963, in Kingman, Kansas.&nbsp; From this union Maryln and Art were blessed with two sons Shawn and Steve.&nbsp; She worked hard as a loving wife, mother and homemaker and worked as an operator with Southwestern Bell.&nbsp; She was a passionate artist that enjoyed painting, knitting and leather works and enjoyed teaching her skills to others.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren.

Surviving family include her husband Art of the home; son Shawn Boltin and wife Rosie of Black Forest, Colorado; daughter-in-law Melody of Russell, brothers Kenneth Kaufman and wife Neva of Boise, Idaho and Mike Kaufman and wife Peggy of Kingman, Kansas; sister Aletha Budig and husband Gene of Great Bend, Kansas and four grandchildren Daniella Cavaliere, Malachai, Isaac and Zeke Boltin.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son Steve Boltin.

Cremation has been selected by the family and a memorial service will be held at a later date.&nbsp; Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
