HaysMed is pleased to announce the appointment of Joben Rieth as the permanent Chief Nursing Officer, effective March 10, 2025, following a national search and comprehensive interview process.

 Since joining HaysMed in an interim capacity in October 2024, Rieth has exemplified a leadership style rooted in transparency, direct engagement, and a profound commitment to patient care.

Throughout his tenure at HaysMed, Rieth has actively worked to understand the hospital’s systems and processes deeply, forging meaningful connections with both associates and patients. His approach has positioned him to effectively lead and implement strategic initiatives, leveraging a solid grasp of operational strengths and areas for growth.

During recent discussions about his journey in healthcare and his vision for the future, Rieth shared insights into the challenges he has faced and his strategic responses.

"One of the main challenges has been navigating the complexities of healthcare regulations while striving to improve patient care efficiency," Rieth said. "We've addressed these challenges by fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptation. I've initiated regular feedback sessions and have been working closely with the Associates to implement innovative solutions that enhance our service delivery without compromising care quality."

Rieth also unveiled an exciting initiative for the upcoming year.

"I'm thrilled to announce that we are implementing the 'BEE Award.' Similar to the Daisy Award, this recognition program will honor the invaluable contributions of our non-nursing staff members, such as our environmental services, administrative personnel, and support staff," he explained.

The BEE Award aims to spotlight their dedication and the compassionate care they provide daily, which are vital to our success and patient satisfaction."

Furthermore, Rieth discussed his ongoing efforts to enhance the work environment for HaysMed’s nursing staff. "My goal is to maintain an environment where our nurses feel valued, respected, and motivated," he remarked.

"We are enhancing our professional development programs to provide more growth opportunities for our nursing staff. Additionally, we're improving our work-life balance initiatives&nbsp;to ensure that our nurses can manage their professional responsibilities while enjoying personal fulfillment and well-being," Rieth said.

The event, sponsored by the Comeau Catholic Campus Center is an evening to "celebrate the good work Christ is doing in the hearts of Fort Hays Catholic students, talk about the future and cultivate support for years to come."

More than 450 students actively participate in the Catholic Tigers organization with FHSU through various events such as Wednesday Catholic Tigers, bible studies, retreats, Mass and men's and women's nights.

Along with FHSU Chaplain Father Andy Hammeke, guest speakers for the night will be FHSU graduate Deacon Adam Urban, who will be ordained a Catholic priest in May, and current student Jianna Rojas from Goddard.

The event will kick off with a 4:30 p.m. rosary in the St. Francis of Assisi Chapel, followed by Mass at 5 p.m. celebrated by Bishop Gerald Vincke, then a social hour – all at the Comeau Catholic Campus Center.

The dinner and program are set to begin at 7 p.m. in the Fort Hays Ballroom of the Fort Hays State University Memorial Union.

Effective March 10, 2025, HaysMed began managing in-house laboratory services and testing previously handled by Quest Lab Diagnostics. 

Outpatient lab services will continue to be available at the HaysMed Outpatient Lab Draw Station located at HaysMed Family Medicine, 2509 Canterbury Drive, ensuring no changes to the location or services patients are accustomed to.

As part of this transition, billing statements for most clinical lab work will come directly from HaysMed. Patients are encouraged to take advantage of our new online bill payment options, specifically designed to make the billing experience simpler and more convenient.

"This transition is designed to ensure continuity in patient services while bringing billing and operations in-house," said Eddie Herrman, CEO of HaysMed. "Our lab team will continue providing the same essential diagnostic services, whether for routine blood work, pre-surgical evaluations for procedures such as a knee replacement, or urgent assessments and testing during emergency trauma care."

The goal of transitioning laboratory services internally is to enhance continuity of care and improve efficiencies within the hospital. The transition process is already underway, with the current lab team actively involved to ensure a smooth changeover. 

The laboratory serves more than 100 patients daily, playing a critical role in supporting HaysMed’s healthcare services.

HaysMed to assume operations of lab services

You don’t have to travel far to learn something new. 

During spring break a decade ago, my husband and I jaunted to Courtland, Kansas, to explore the Jamestown Marsh area. I expected to see migratory birds, including eagles, cranes, ducks, and geese, and hoped to visit Pawnee Indian Village Museum to study more about early residents of this region. My to-do list included antiquing and photography. 

One thing I never expected was discovering a maple tapping/syrup making operation. In fact, I thought this was a New England-only activity, never realizing Kansans produce local maple products.

Along Highway 36, trees clearly realized spring’s official arrival was days away. Tiny buds turned toward the sun. Robins hopped about still dormant yards seeking a full belly. 

Upon reaching our destination, we noticed unanticipated seasonal scenery. Scores of maple trees sported not only reddish bud clusters, but blue and silver buckets adorned their trunks. After cruising each street to confirm our suspicions, we agreed someone had tapped local maples. 

After arriving at Snow Goose Lodge, the mystery deepened. We spied a sugar shack—a small hut containing a wood-burning evaporation unit—with a wood maple leaf cutout labeled, “Republic County Maple Guys.”

Lodge host Jim Elliott, participant in this spring ritual, simmered maple sap as we drove in. After we met him, he answered one question after another. He explained you tap the trees under certain conditions: day temperatures must be above freezing and night temps below, adding the operation typically has a two-to-three-week collection window. We’d timed our arrival perfectly.

Jim and his business partners-- two youngsters--tapped trees, collected sap, reduced it on a specially designed wood-burning contraption, condensed it further on the stovetop to golden brown, thick syrup they bottled to sell at local farm markets. 

Savoring the kitchen aroma as the well-tended stockpot bubbled made me eager to return as soon as their product hit the market.

Wanting to know more about maple syrup production in Kansas, I researched an article about these entrepreneurs and their efforts. 

According to the Republic County Economic Development site, that year marked their third year of production. Each season, with the aid of local maple tree owners, the team increased efforts enough to collect approximately 600 gallons of sap, which rendered about 12 gallons of syrup. The article focused on value-added agricultural products.

Even more than goods to sell, the value-added human product Mr. Elliott offered his business partners impressed me. 

The lessons these young men learned about identifying trees, negotiating with landowners, tapping trees, collecting sap, converting raw material to consumable syrup, and marketing offered personalized education for all involved. Those lads learned practical math, cooking, food safety, writing, reading, creative thinking, entrepreneurial and people skills that surpass anything textbooks provide. 

Their chance to see opportunities beyond expanding markets and services and connect rural youth to local resources and use those contacts to create expertise created successful entrepreneurs who will grow our state.

What began as a simple getaway for us turned into a bucket full of possibilities. 

Seeing three Kansans turn a natural resource in their yards into not only an agricultural venture but also a skill and character-building effort offers hope that utilizing such assets creates sweet business deals as well.

ELLIS COUNTY —The Kansas Highway Patrol reports traffic is flowing well through the U.S. 183 Bypass bridge tear down that began Tuesday on Interstate 70 in Ellis County.

The Kansas Department of Transportation is temporarily closing both directions of Interstate 70 near Hays for the removal of the U.S. 183 bypass bridge over I-70 at Exit 157.

Eastbound and westbound traffic is being diverted on to the U.S. 183 bypass exit ramp at Exit 157 and re-enter I-70 via the entrance ramp. Stop signs on both exit ramps will be covered to allow for continuous traffic flow through the detour, and no right or left turns will be allowed.

Additional closures will also be in place on the U.S. 183 bypass and 230th&nbsp;Avenue.

Northbound lanes on the U.S. 183 bypass are closed north of the intersection at Fairground and Frontier Roads, and southbound 230th&nbsp;Avenue will be closed immediately south of the 55th&nbsp;Street intersection.

Access to I-70 from the U.S. 183 bypass and 230th&nbsp;Avenue will not be available during the closure.&nbsp;

KHP: Traffic flowing well as I-70 bridge removal work begins

A Hays man and woman were arrested for allegedly attempting to steal a shopping cart full of items at Walmart.

According to Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler, 53-year-old Terri Kim Boehm and 52-year-old Mieczyslaw Michael Nestir allegedly attempted to exit the store without paying on Saturday.

When confronted by Walmart staff, Nestir allegedly fled on foot before police arrived, while Boehm was apprehended at a vehicle. Officers later discovered that the suspects had allegedly altered the vehicle's license plate to avoid detection.

Scheibler said the shopping cart full of merchandise was valued at $770.99.

Nestir turned himself in at the police department on Sunday. Both suspects were charged with theft and interference with law enforcement.

Two arrested in Hays for alleged theft

The Ellis County Commission approved the Ellis County Health Department's annual grant submission and update during its meeting on Tuesday.

Presented by Commission Chair Michael Berges, the meeting will be attended by Hilltop Road homeowners and residents of other subdivisions around Hays to discuss additional road maintenance concerns.

Hilltop Road underwent a road maintenance project last year to improve deficiencies.

Ellis County Treasurer Vernon Ruder spoke to commissioners about removing a wall in the treasury back office to improve space utilization. Commissioners approved the wall removal.

Think-Tank is an event centered around the opportunity for all Ellis County residents to present their ideas to a board of judges for the chance to see their idea come to life. 

How does it work? Come up with an idea of how Ellis County could be improved!

Per Ellis County Resolution 2017-4, the Ellis County Fire Department is announcing the implementation of a temporary burn ban in all the unincorporated areas of Ellis County effective Tuesday, March 11. 

While in a burn ban, this limits the open burning of garden/yard debris, pastures, ditches, or other materials. 

However, normal household trash can still be burnt in a barrel with a protected screened cover. 

The burn ban is being implemented due to the increasing temperatures, lower levels of humidity, and a long spell without significant measurable moisture throughout the entire county. 

It is hopeful a significant amount of moisture will blanket Ellis County in the coming weeks. If so, an announcement will be made when the ban is lifted. 

As always, if anyone ever questions if a fire is about to become out of control, or may see a potential fire, please call 911 immediately to get emergency personnel to respond as quickly as possible.&nbsp;

The National Weather Service trained attendees to&nbsp;identify and report severe storms during&nbsp;its annual Storm Spotter Preparedness presentation on Thursday in Hays.

Meteorologist Kelly Sugden from the&nbsp;National Weather Service in Dodge City spoke to staff and those unfamiliar with Kansas weather.&nbsp;Ellis County hosted the event at the Emergency Services Building.

The&nbsp;National Weather Service operates around the clock, providing forecasts and warnings for hazardous weather, including severe storms, tornadoes and wildfires.

However, due to distance limitations, the radar in Dodge City cannot capture all storm features in central Kansas, making public observations essential from those in the area.

"The radar beam is going to be looking at the middle to upper portion of the storm. It cannot see the low-level portion where the tornado would be. That's where we need your guys' help," Sugden said.

Kansans are vital in ensuring accurate&nbsp;National Weather Service warnings during severe weather. Whether it's tornadoes, high winds, hail or flooding, you can report conditions by calling the severe weather spotter line at 1-800-824-9943 or the NWNational Weather Service office in Dodge City at 620-225-6514.

When reporting severe weather, state your name and describe the event you witnessed. Include the location or direction of the event, referencing the nearest town, landmarks or highway markers, along with the time it occurred.

"The biggest thing is to call us. We prefer a phone call because it's direct communication," Sugden said. "We're staffed [at&nbsp;National Weather Service Dodge City] all the time, so someone will always answer the phone."

Sugden explained the different storm types, such as single-cell, multi-cell clusters, squall lines and the highly dangerous supercells.

"Supercells are on their own level. This is the mother of all storms, which means that the chances of severe weather are very high," he said.

The significant dangers supercells present are tornadoes, damaging winds exceeding 58 mph, quarter-size hail and flash flooding.

Severe storms form when instability and moisture provide the ideal conditions for strong updrafts. These updrafts are often driven by humid air from the south. 

Lift happens as warm, moist air rises along weather fronts. Cold fronts spark storm development.

Wind shear, the variation in wind speed and direction at different altitudes, is essential for supercells. It drives storm rotation and heightens the risk of tornado formation.

Sugden said that specific cloud formations can signal whether a developing storm has the potential to become dangerous.

Sugden also clarified the distinction between severe weather warnings and watches.

A severe weather warning indicates a hazardous event is imminent or already happening, requiring immediate action. A severe storm watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather, but it has not yet developed.

Sugden advises taking shelter and staying prepared when either advisory is issued but also offers additional guidance for those planning to hunt storms.

"If you are storm spotting or storm chasing, have an escape route option," he said. "Maintain situational awareness. Weather changes very rapidly and constantly."

Before heading out, ensure you have multiple ways to receive warnings, such as phone alerts, radio stations and social media updates from the National Weather Service.

Use radar apps or maps to track your position relative to the storm. For the best visibility, position yourself southeast of the storm.

Sugden emphasized storm chasing is safer with at least two people. One focuses on driving, and the other acting as a navigator, monitoring radar and hazards.

The National Weather Service provides storm spotter certifications to those who complete training sessions and meet the required criteria. These certifications validate your expertise and authorize you to report severe weather officially.

LAWRENCE&nbsp;&nbsp;—&nbsp;&nbsp;The Kansas Scholastic Press Association is proud to announce the winners of the 2025 KSPA Regional Contests, which awarded the best student journalism from nearly 1,800 entries gathered from around the state. KSPA enlists the help of journalism teachers, professional journalists, university faculty members and other journalism experts to judge the entries. In addition to receiving feedback on their entries, students will also benefit from reviewing compilations of winning work.

Any student who earns an award in the regional contest advances to the KSPA State Contest. The state contest will also be hosted virtually. Based on results from the state contest, KSPA will determine the Sweepstakes Winners — the top schools in 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A.

Hays High School journalists qualify for state at regional contests

NORTON — The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to close 3.5 miles of U.S. 281 for Osborne County for reconstruction starting Monday, March 17.

The closure will begin at the at the north U.S. 24 junction and end at the south city limits of Portis. Motorists are advised to use the signed detour on&nbsp;U.S. 24, K-181, U.S. 36 and U.S. 281 while the closure is in effect.

KDOT expects the road to reopen in late November, conditions permitting.

King Construction of Hesston is the primary contractor for the $18.9 million project, which is part of KDOT’s Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program, known as IKE. Portion of U.S. 281 to close in Osborne County

Founded in 1967, the Hays Arts Council (HAC) was the first community arts agency in Kansas. Its mission is to foster, promote, and support creative expression while enhancing community engagement with the arts. The HAC hosts the Smoky Hill Art Competition and Exhibition (Kansas’ oldest ongoing fine arts competition, now in its 55th year), the Five State Photography Competition and Exhibition (40 years strong), and four annual art walks.

A 2023 economic impact study by Fort Hays State University’s Docking Institute estimates 17,402 annual visitors to the HAC, generating $275,450 in economic impact. The report highlights how the HAC's activities contribute to individual well-being and community vibrancy beyond measurable dollars.

The HAC also works with students across 12 public and private schools in five towns and three counties, engaging approximately 3,500 students annually, with 2,900 receiving arts programming at least three times per year. Research underscores the arts' positive impact on youth, improving self-esteem, social skills, and behavioral outcomes.

Despite the HAC’s deep community impact, its facilities are outdated and inefficient. The space includes:

· One functional (and barely accessible) restroom · Cramped office space and small, disjointed storage areas · A galley kitchen too small for effective use · No dedicated meeting/conference space · An unsafe layout requiring visitors to exit one building to enter another, even in inclement weather · Outdated plumbing and electrical systems

As time passes, renovation costs only increase. That’s why the HAC launched the For the Heart of Hays $3 million campaign to:

· Connect the two buildings into one seamless, efficient, and safe space · Expand educational and experiential spaces for interactive arts programming · Modernize and enhance aesthetics while improving accessibility · Expand the kitchen and add conference space for community use · Upgrade restrooms and other spaces within the gallery to be fully ADA-compliant · Elevate our facilities to match the quality of exhibitions, programs, and events HAC provides

The renovated space will allow the HAC to offer expanded youth and adult art classes, larger exhibits, performance art, and new community collaborations. The improvements will further establish the HAC as a cultural hub, attracting even more visitors to Downtown Hays.
