Keep the holiday season cheerful by protecting pets from potential hazards. Susan Nelson, clinical professor and veterinarian at the Kansas State University&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksvhc.org/services/pet-health-center/">Hill's Pet Health and Nutrition Center</a>, cautions pet owners about the unexpected dangers that celebrations of the season can present to curious animals.

"Homes are often decked for the holidays, and many decorations and wrapping items have the potential to cause harm if ingested, bitten or knocked over," Nelson said. "These include items such as ribbons, tinsel, hooks, electrical cords, candles, oil lamps, potpourri, ornaments and wreaths."

If pets ingest holiday plants, it can cause anything from minor gastrointestinal irritation to life-threatening toxicity. Nelson says to keep mistletoe, holly, amaryllis, balsam, pine and cedar out of reach. Certain water additives for Christmas trees can also be toxic to pets. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals provides a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/aspca-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants">list of plants toxic</a>&nbsp;to dogs and cats on its website.

Holiday festivities might be fun for people, but Nelson said they can be stressful for pets. Strangers and crowds can make animals anxious, so Nelson advises keeping them in a comfortable, quiet place away from the commotion with a favorite toy or treat. Even if pets enjoy company, they should still have access to a room or crate in a calm area where guests won't disturb them.

For pets that are stressed by visitors, Nelson recommends consulting with a veterinarian about prescribing anxiolytics to help decrease the pet's anxiety until the visitors are gone.

"It's important to make sure pets have identification, like a collar with tags or a microchip," Nelson added. "That way, if they slip through the door and run away as guests enter or leave, the pet can be returned. It's critical for tags and microchips to have the most up-to-date contact information to help with reunification."

Many animal-related emergency visits during the holidays are due to pets eating something inappropriate, whether intentionally given to them or accidentally ingested.

"Fatty foods can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis," Nelson said. "This includes things like ham, gravy, fat trimmings from meat, turkey skin and dark meat, butter-laden potatoes, and other buttered vegetables."

Meat bones can cause life-threatening perforations of the gastrointestinal tract, especially poultry bones, which tend to splinter when chewed. Several small pieces can also lead to obstructions or tooth breakage.

Nelson encourages pet owners to exercise caution with foods and beverages that can be harmful to animals. 

Items to avoid that can pose serious health risks include chocolate, coffee and other caffeinated drinks, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, raw yeast dough, salty snacks, foods seasoned with garlic or onion powder, citrus stems, leaves, peels, fruits and seeds, dairy products, desserts or candies sweetened with xylitol, and alcoholic beverages.

"Securing all food items behind a pet-proof door and making sure trash cans are properly closed can help keep pets safe," Nelson said. "Strings, foil wrappers, stainless steel scrub pads, skewers and other items smell like the food they were used on and can be tempting for pets to ingest. These can lead to gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation."

K-State veterinarian shares tips to keep pets safe during the holiday season

Downtown Hays invites the community to bundle up and experience the magic of the 25th annual&nbsp;FrostFest Illuminated Parade on Sunday, December 7 at 6:00 p.m. This year marks a major milestone as FrostFest&nbsp;celebrates a quarter-century of glowing floats, community pride, and holiday wonder — and with 50+ registered&nbsp;parade entries, it’s shaping up to be the most spectacular procession yet.

This year’s theme, “Timeless Traditions,” reflects the parade’s long-standing place in Hays’ holiday season. Floats&nbsp;and entries will shine in a nod both to the parade’s 25th anniversary and to the nostalgic traditions that return year after year.

“Reaching 25 years of FrostFest is something truly special,” said Lee Ann June, executive director of The Bricks. 

“This parade is woven into the heart of the community. Families come every year, businesses and organizations&nbsp;pour their creativity into their floats, and the glow on Main Street feels like pure Christmas magic. We couldn’t be&nbsp;more excited to celebrate this milestone with a record number of entries.”

This year, FrostFest also honors the Christmas Magic on Main Street Tree Topper Sponsor, Werth Wealth&nbsp;Management, who will serve as the Grand Marshal of the 2025 parade in recognition of their generous support of&nbsp;the Christmas Magic on Main Street imitative.

From being told she wasn’t smart enough for college to earning a national award, Tisa Mason’s journey is a testament to hard work and the support she received along the way.

"You don't get to this position, and you don't get this recognition, without a lot of other people contributing to the work that you get recognized for. Nothing happens in isolation," Fort Hays State University President Mason said. "This award is reflective of the work of a lot of people, not just mine."

Mason received the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators IV-West President’s Award in October in St. Louis. The honor recognizes a university president who has advanced the quality of student life on campus by supporting student affairs staff and programs.

Joey Linn, FHSU vice president for student affairs, said in his nomination letter to the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators committee, "Dr. Mason is widely recognized by students, faculty, staff, and alumni as a president who genuinely and consistently prioritizes student life... she models authentic student-centered leadership."

Mason said being visible to students matters to her because she wants them to feel cared for. This extends to joining the student section at football games, attending band and percussion concerts and traveling to Milwaukee to support All-American runner Emily McCullough.

"One of my favorite things to this day is high-fives across campus. I love to high-five students. I want them to know that the reason I'm here is because I believe in the potential of their future," she said.

Mason said the nomination was humbling and added the national association played a foundational role in her path to becoming president. She was born in Palmer, Massachusetts, with her father working as a barber and her mother as a school bus driver.

No one in Mason’s family had attended college, making her a first-generation student. This was despite being doubted during her time at Classical High School in Rhode Island, where she graduated in 1979.

"My guidance counselor told me I wasn't smart enough to go to college and that my parents couldn't afford it anyway," Mason said. "But I was fortunate enough to have a mom who wanted more, worked hard and encouraged my heart."

Mason recalled attending a college fair and being struck by the friendliness of the recruiters at the Transylvania University booth from Kentucky. She took a bold step and enrolled without ever seeing the campus or even visiting the state.

Mason said she entered college as a pre-med student but eventually found her passion in social science, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Anthropology in 1983.&nbsp;

The National Association of Campus Activities conducted a nationwide search to select five students for a pilot program that would earn a master’s degree and a professional certification.

"Somebody dropped out at the last minute," Mason said. "Eastern Illinois University called Transylvania and said, 'We have an opening. Do you know anyone?'"&nbsp;

That opportunity brought her to Illinois, where the association had partnered with the institution to offer the program. Mason earned her Master of Science in Education in 1984 while working as an administrative graduate assistant in the Office of Student Activities from 1983 to 1984.&nbsp;

"My first job was at Hanover College," Mason said. "The person hiring there used to work at Transylvania University, where I was a student. There are all these incredible networks and leaps of faith that are sprinkled through the trajectory that brought me here."

Mason worked as assistant dean of students at Hanover College in Indiana from 1984 to 1986, managing two residence halls, advising the Panhellenic Council and committees of the student programming board. She also served as assistant director of the campus center.

From 1987 to 1994, she served as director of student life and an assistant professor at Christopher Newport University in Virginia, overseeing all aspects of student life and residential life.

Mason earned her Doctor of Education from the College of William and Mary in Virginia in 1992. Her dissertation, titled “The Commuters’ Alma Mater: Profiles of College Student Experiences at a Commuter Institution,” examined how different students experience campus life through interviews and exercises.

In 1994, she became the executive director of Sigma Kappa Sorority and Foundation in Indianapolis, an organization with more than 135,000 members. In 2004, Mason once again took on the role of dean of student life, this time at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater.

Mason said that during this time, former FHSU President Edward Hammond was searching for a new vice president of student affairs and contacted the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators for recommendations.

"Hammond called the president of the association, who called my boss in Wisconsin, and then said to me, 'Hey, President Hammond is looking for a vice president. Do you think you'd be interested?'" Mason said. "I applied, and I was very fortunate to get the job."

Before beginning her new chapter in the sunflower state, Mason said she had never been to Kansas, but she quickly adjusted to what would eventually become her new home.

"People were very personal, supportive, and it was a positive experience," she said.

She served as vice president of student affairs from 2008 to 2014, the year Hammond retired. Mason said she was a finalist for the FHSU presidency, but when that opportunity closed, another one emerged elsewhere.

A search firm reached out to Mason with the offer to become president of Valley City State University in North Dakota.

"One of the advantages of not getting the job here the first time and going to Valley City State is that I was joining a new community that had no preconceived notions about who I was or how I would lead. I had to rely on building new relationships, and I got to try things out in a new environment with new colleagues," Mason said.

<a href="https://www.vcsu.edu/about-vcsu/who-we-are/history/">According to Valley City State University</a>, Mason served as the 13th president, leading the campus through statewide budget cuts during her three-year tenure while pushing for infrastructure upgrades.

Mason said her years in North Dakota gave her the confidence and presidential experience she would later bring to FHSU as its 10th president. She said the decision to return came with some hesitation.

"What sometimes feels like misfortune turns out to be a blessing, and that's how I looked at that pathway," she said. "I got to come back to colleagues I trusted, good friends and a community that I really adored. The hardest part about coming back to Fort Hays was leaving Valley City because I felt the same way about that community."

"When I had my inauguration, the whole theme that would carry through my presidency is unlocking untapped potential because I believe every student, faculty, and staff has untapped potential, and we're here to help you launch your future," she said.

Mason said she stays grounded through a steady routine that starts with a 5:30 a.m. workout, along with prayer and support from her strong faith community.

Mason hopes to uphold FHSU’s promise of affordable success for as long as she can serve. She said the most rewarding part of her presidency is congratulating thousands of graduates each year as they embark on their own journeys.

"Every hand I shake at commencement is the most meaningful to me. I wish I knew every story of every student whose hand I shook, but I know from my own story how transformative a college education is and how it will impact the future of that person's family as well," Mason said.

NWester: Unlocking potential: Inside FHSU President Tisa Mason's life

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas

A grant for more than $20,000 was received by Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas from the Beach Family Foundation to enhance communication, improve community engagement and support its Custom Creations work environment.

Specifically, this grant will be instrumental in enhancing DSNWK’s public presence and communication through electronic displays at their office locations throughout its service area. The displays will showcase achievements, program updates, community events, and information about services which will improve communication with visitors, families, and the public.

The grant will also be used to upgrade Custom Creations workspace with new cabinets, new display photos and merchandise display racks. These additions to our downtown Hays store will better showcase the exceptional work and talent of DSNWK’s many artists.

Finally, the Beach Family grant will be used to replace outdated manufacturing technology, and improve the overall work environment for Custom Creations. DSNWK will purchase two additional Cricut machines, a Cricut Autopress, a Glowforge Pro, a sublimation machine, and new work tables.

“Adding these items to our creative options allows DSNWK to provide a more comprehensive,&nbsp;effective, and modern environment that empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to&nbsp;achieve their fullest potential and foster greater connections and understanding in our community,” states Jerry Michaud, DSNWK president.

DSNWK is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving 18 counties in northwest Kansas with a mission to advocate for persons with disabilities and those who care about them by planning and supporting a life of dignity, interdependence, and personal satisfaction in the community.

DSNWK awarded grant from Beach Family Foundation

In a world where the hustle and bustle often overshadow gentle acts of kindness, Isaiah Kevin Maxi stood out. Born on August 16, 1994, in Kansas City, Missouri, Isaiah’s earthly journey ended at the age of 30 on July 10, 2025, but his legacy continues to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.

During the holiday season, when families gather around the warmth of love and laughter, we reflect on the indelible mark Isaiah left on his loved ones and his community. From a young age, Isaiah faced challenges, particularly with the loss of his mother, Kim Alexander-Maxi, when he was just six years old. Yet, amidst personal tragedy, he transformed his grief into a powerful drive for service and leadership, becoming a beacon of hope and positivity for others.

A proud graduate of Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in 2017, Isaiah earned degrees in Sociology and Organizational Leadership while actively participating in student activities, athletics, and working at the Tiger Tots Preschool Center, where he was affectionately known as “Mr. Maxi.” His infectious energy lit up the room, encouraging children to embrace learning and teamwork.

Friends and family describe Isaiah as warm-hearted and approachable, someone who made everyone feel valued. He was not just a talented athlete on the football field, earning accolades as a leader of the Fort Hays State Tigers, but also a compassionate volunteer dedicated to uplifting others. Seth Kastle, professor of leadership, once said, “He was the epitome of what we educate our students to be – dedicated to serving others and helping those in need.”

After graduation, Isaiah continued his mission of service through AmeriCorps, striving to create positive change in the lives of those around him. He embraced every challenge as an opportunity, believing that “everything happens for a reason,” and ensuring his legacy was one of compassion, leadership, and community building.

His sudden passing left a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him. To honor his memory and the values he embodied, the FHSU Leadership Program has renamed its student service award to the “Isaiah Maxi Outstanding Leadership and Service Award.” This accolade will celebrate and recognize students who exemplify the same spirit of dedication and service that Isaiah so passionately embraced.

“Life isn’t just about football,” he would often say. “When I leave here, I want people to say, ‘Maxi was a good dude.’” Indeed, Isaiah was much more than a good dude; he was a phenomenal human being whose legacy will inspire generations to come.

This December, as we gather with those who matter most, we remember Isaiah’s unwavering commitment to lifting others up and the lasting impact of his generous spirit. His legacy lives on through the stories, kindness, and encouragement he shared, inspiring us to embody the&nbsp;gratitude, courage, and compassion he represented so well. As we reflect on his life and the holiday season, may we honor Isaiah by nurturing meaningful connections, extending kindness, and carrying forward his call to “make a difference” in our own lives and communities.

Born on August 16, 1994, in Kansas City, Missouri, Isaiah’s earthly journey ended at the age of 30 on July 10, 2025, but his legacy continues to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.During the holiday season, when families gather around the warmth of love and laughter, we reflect on the indelible mark Isaiah left on his loved ones and his community. From a young age, Isaiah faced challenges, particularly with the loss of his mother, Kim Alexander-Maxi, when he was just six years old. Yet, amidst personal tragedy, he transformed his grief into a powerful drive for service and leadership, becoming a beacon of hope and positivity for others.A proud graduate of Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in 2017, Isaiah earned degrees in Sociology and Organizational Leadership while actively participating in student activities, athletics, and working at the Tiger Tots Preschool Center, where he was affectionately known as “Mr. Maxi.” His infectious energy lit up the room, encouraging children to embrace learning and teamwork.Friends and family describe Isaiah as warm-hearted and approachable, someone who made everyone feel valued. He was not just a talented athlete on the football field, earning accolades as a leader of the Fort Hays State Tigers, but also a compassionate volunteer dedicated to uplifting others. Seth Kastle, professor of leadership, once said, “He was the epitome of what we educate our students to be – dedicated to serving others and helping those in need.”After graduation, Isaiah continued his mission of service through AmeriCorps, striving to create positive change in the lives of those around him. He embraced every challenge as an opportunity, believing that “everything happens for a reason,” and ensuring his legacy was one of compassion, leadership, and community building.His sudden passing left a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him. To honor his memory and the values he embodied, the FHSU Leadership Program has renamed its student service award to the “Isaiah Maxi Outstanding Leadership and Service Award.” This accolade will celebrate and recognize students who exemplify the same spirit of dedication and service that Isaiah so passionately embraced.“Life isn’t just about football,” he would often say. “When I leave here, I want people to say, ‘Maxi was a good dude.’” Indeed, Isaiah was much more than a good dude; he was a phenomenal human being whose legacy will inspire generations to come.This December, as we gather with those who matter most, we remember Isaiah’s unwavering commitment to lifting others up and the lasting impact of his generous spirit. His legacy lives on through the stories, kindness, and encouragement he shared, inspiring us to embody the&nbsp;gratitude, courage, and compassion he represented so well. The phrase “give back” is often tied to the months of October and November, but for the Girl Scout Troop 11298, located in Hays, it has become so much more.

Over a year ago, the girls were presented with a challenge from their leaders to find meaningful ways to give back to the community, not just once or twice a year, but for twelve consecutive months. Without hesitation, the girls embraced the idea.

Now, more than a year later, Troop 11298 has not only completed that challenge but carried it forward with passion, creativity, and heart. Month after month, these girls have shown that giving back is more than an activity, it’s a way of life. In doing so, they have redefined what true leadership looks like, regardless of age.

While some acts of service may seem small, the troop has learned that impact isn’t measured by size, but by sincerity. A handmade card, a simple visit, or a small donation can bring just as much joy as a large-scale project.

Here are just a few examples of Troop 11298’s recent acts of service:

· September 2024: Handmade pet toys donated to the High Plains Humane Society.

· November 2024: Created over 300 handcrafted Thanksgiving cards for nursing home residents in Hays.

· December 2024: Sent heartfelt Christmas cards to a woman in Iowa whose husband decorated his neighborhood to bring her joy as she lives with dementia.

· January 2025: Donated bed sheets to the Cold Weather Shelter in Hays.

· February 2025: Painted wooden roses for Valentine’s Day gifts for nursing home residents.

· July 2025: Spent an afternoon at Brookdale Nursing Home playing BINGO and sharing smiles.

· September 2025: Donated small stuffed animals to local EMS, offering comfort to children riding in ambulances.

· October 2025: Built handmade birdhouses to help relocate barn swallows nesting around the High Plains Humane Society, giving the birds a safer home.

· November 2025: Created “Hero Kits” and delivered to our Hays Police Department

· December 2025: Secret Santa Elves for Brookdale Nursing Home residents

Life isn’t always easy, and we all face moments of struggle, uncertainty, and challenge. But the girls have learned that even in those times, finding a way to spread kindness can make a world of difference. Through their experiences, the girls have discovered an important truth, that every person, at every stage of life, faces challenges, yet also has something meaningful to offer. 

Their journey serves as a reminder that when we give back, we not only strengthen our communities, but we also grow stronger as individuals, more confident, connected, and compassionate.

Today, Troop 11298 is extending this challenge to other organizations within the surrounding communities. No matter your age, whether you’re a kindergartener just beginning your journey or an adult who has already walked many paths, there is something powerful and fulfilling about investing in your community simply for the sake of giving back.

Girl Scout Troop 11298 in Hays gives back year round

The&nbsp;<a href="https://haysartscouncil.org/five-state" target="_blank">Hays Arts Council Winter Art Walk</a>&nbsp;will be presented from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6.&nbsp;Most of the exhibits are in downtown Hays and at Fort Hays State University.

From ceramics to photography, and authors to live music, you'll find a wide mix of visual, literary and performance arts, said&nbsp;Chandler Reich, Hays Arts Council executive director.

The 5-State Photography Competition and Exhibition, in its 42nd year, will anchor the art walk at the Hays Arts Center.&nbsp;

The exhibition is the result of a juried, competitive exhibition open to any photographer living in Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma and Colorado. &nbsp;

This year, 648 photos were entered, with 150 selected for exhibition by juror John Finch, a longtime wildlife photographer who has worked around the world. He also determined cash awards totaling $1,500.

Finch told Reich he may have been a little more critical in judging the landscape and wildlife photography because of his background.

"He told us he starts just by looking at the pictures, and then he starts selecting based on his first impression," Reich said.&nbsp; "Once he gets that narrowed down, he starts looking at the technical things.

"I'm really excited for everything to be up and for people to see his choices."

The 5-State Exhibition will be on display through February 2026.

There are 17 venues to visit during Saturday's art walk.&nbsp;

Reich said having the event on Saturday makes it easier for most people, including out-of-town visitors, to view all the exhibits.

For the youngest participants, a children's art show and hot cocoa will be offered at the K-State Cottonwood Extension Office, sponsored by Little Explorers Daycare.

Many art students from Fort Hays State University and Hays High School will showcase their work, including ceramics, paintings, printmaking and sculpture.&nbsp;

The Hays High Orchestra will be performing in the Downtown Pavilion in Union Pacific Park from 10 a.m. to noon.

Fort Hays State University sculpture professor Toby Flores will show his own sculpture and forged works in his gallery at 708 Main.

More live music can be enjoyed from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Hays Public Library by the Sweet Remedy Band, where authors Kale Link and Jeanne Riedel will talk about their books, and photography by Chris Schmidt will be featured.

Christmas music by Buffalo Bridge 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. will be presented at Custom Creations.

Handmade holiday creations from Bethesda Place, in conjunction with the WeKan Center, will be available for purchase at the Bethesda Place Christmas Store, 126 W. Ninth.

There will be one exhibit outside the downtown Hays area.

Fiber arts by Micki Armstrong and Kari Schultz and show quilting by Phyllis Marcum will be featured at the Sew Easy Stitch Lounge, 2506 Vine.&nbsp;

There is no fee to attend the art walk.&nbsp;

🎙 5-State Photo anchors Hays Arts Council Winter Art Walk on Saturday

In Kansas and nationwide, the number of women having babies in their 40s is increasing. It comes as the overall birth rate declines and younger women are having fewer babies.

ROELAND PARK —&nbsp;It’s a warm day in November, and Annie Parsons and her 2-year-old son, River, are raking leaves in their yard in Roeland Park. River has a toddler-sized rake he’s using to scrape the dirt and collect acorns.

Parsons always dreamed of having kids. Her plan was to fall in love, settle down and start having babies by her mid-twenties. But time ticked on, and by the time Parsons was in her late 30s, she had not found a partner to share this dream with.

“The desire to be a mom was stronger than it was to have a partner or to be a wife,” she said, “so I decided to pursue motherhood on my own.”

With the help of in vitro fertilization and a sperm donor, Parsons brought River into the world when she was 41. Stories like hers, where women have babies later in life, are becoming more common.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the amount of<a href="https://www.thebump.com/news/more-births-to-women-over-40-than-teens" target="_blank">&nbsp;moms in their 40s having babies exceeded the amount of teenagers</a>&nbsp;giving birth for the first time. This is not the case in Kansas, where teenage birth rates still exceed the national average. But as birth rates in other age categories decline, the state is also seeing a rise in older moms.

Parsons said there was a lot of heartbreak leading up to River’s birth. It took multiple tries to get pregnant.

Now though, Parsons can’t imagine life any other way.

“In my 20s, I just didn't know myself as well as I do now,” she said. “The fact that I was not a parent earlier in life really allowed me to take some of those risks and to explore my career.”

Parsons said she’s already accomplished her goals in her career and she is financially stable, so now she’s able to have a work-life balance and River can be her main focus.

“I don't feel like I missed anything in the earlier years,” she said. “There's nowhere else that I'd rather be than right here right now and that is a gift.”

There are struggles of course. Parsons said one of the hardest things to adjust to was having the aesthetic of her home, which she carefully decorated, change dramatically. She was so used to being alone that having a little person and their things move in was a lot.

She recently replaced her coffee table with a dedicated table for playing with toy trains.

“There are things that are aesthetically not what I want my house to look like,” Parsons said. “Why are all children's toys primary colors?”

Despite those challenges, Parsons said she feels like she’s living the best years of her life right now, and part of that has to do with when she had River.

 </figure>What experts are sayingAccording to state data, the majority of babies in Kansas are still born to women aged 25 to 29. But those numbers, along with the overall birthrate, are declining. Births to women aged 40 to 44, however, are increasing.Between 2013 and 2023, the percentage of all births to moms 40-44 went from 1.9% to 2.6%, an almost 40% increase. Nationally, the increase is even more drastic. Births to women aged 40-44 went from 2.8% in 2013 to 3.8% in 2023.<h2>More Kansans are being born to older mothers</h2><figure>

 </figure>Sarah Hayford is director of the Institute for Population Research at Ohio State University.The changes in birth rate trends year to year may seem small, but Hayford said that’s normal for population statistics and the changes add up.“When we see those small declines continuing to happen for five years or 10 years, then we might say something is going on there and there's really changes happening,” she said.Hayford said birth rates among women in their teens and 20s are declining drastically. She said this is partially due to people being better able to prevent unplanned pregnancies.There still isn’t clear data on what those women will do later in life.“We're not sure yet whether they will have children later on just because they haven't reached those older ages,” Hayford said. “The big declines that we see might be temporary if people sort of catch up.”Caitlin Linscheid, an OB-GYN in Johnson County, said she’s seen more and more women in their 40s coming in for preconception counseling or prenatal care.She believes the trend is largely due to three factors: better access to contraceptives, more fertility treatment options and more people choosing to prioritize their careers.But Linscheid said if you’re considering delaying pregnancy, it’s important to have a conversation with your doctor. Older moms are more likely to have complications like gestational diabetes, preeclampsia or postpartum hemorrhage.Linsheid said she has to have hard conversations with women who thought they could conceive in their 40s but aren’t able to.She’s urging women to talk to health care providers well in advance of having children, especially if they’re considering becoming older moms.“To make sure that your plans allow you to have the family that forms in the way that you want it to when you want it to,” she said.<figure>

 </figure>'Like being a zoo animal'De Soto resident Esther Reddish-Hanner wasn’t expecting to have a baby in her 40s. She already had four children and was a grandma when she got married in 2017. She said she was shocked when she found herself pregnant a few years later because her husband had been told he was infertile.After having a miscarriage, she gave birth to her son, Alex, in 2021 at age 44. Reddish-Hanner said the pregnancy was a lot harder than her others.“I just felt a difference in my body,” she said, explaining that after Alex’s birth she was diagnosed with a vitamin D deficiency. “Being an older parent, I have found it a lot tougher trying to keep my own health up.”Reddish-Hanner said there’s also a big difference in her parenting style. She said she used to be a stern parent but she’s more patient now.“I call myself mom, but I'm like grandma mom,” she said. “As an older parent, I do things a lot differently than when I was younger.”<figure>

 </figure>Having a baby later in life also changed financial plans. Reddish-Hanner said her husband, who is 55, plans on retiring later than he originally thought. But she said having Alex felt like a miracle and gave her husband the chance to experience parenthood. She’s also able to take this version of motherhood slower. She isn’t working until Alex goes to school.“Instead of being forced to work, I'm able to have a choice,” Reddish-Hanner said. “That's what I like about being an older parent, is that before I had no choice. I had to work.”Another age category that’s having more babies is women 45 and up. According to a report from the CDC, the amount of women having babies in that age category increased by 450% between 1990 and 2023.<figure>

 </figure>Olathe resident Aimee De Vries is one of those moms. She said her pregnancy was really easy, but she was out of the ordinary in the maternity ward.“It was just kind of like being a zoo animal,” she said, “since I was 45 and pregnant and also a grandma at the time.”De Vries gave birth to her son, Lucas, in 2023. She said she remarried a few years before that and wanted another baby.De Vries had her first children, two girls, when she was in her early 20s. She said at this age, parenting is really different. She’s joined Facebook groups for moms in their 40s to find support.In her 20s, De Vries said she was a strict parent because she had to be. She was a single mom and she said she missed out on a lot of her daughters’ milestones because she had to work.With Lucas, she gets to stay home and soak it all in.
