DODGE CITY — The National Weather Service in Dodge City has issued a tornado watch in effect until now until 10 p.m. The area covers much of western Kansas, including Ellis County.

Significant severe weather risk this afternoon and early evening&nbsp;for areas along and east of Highway 283. Between 3-8 p.m., discrete&nbsp;supercells are possible with an environment to support hail tennis&nbsp;ball sized or greater, wind gusts over 60 mph, and tornadoes with&nbsp;strong tornado potential especially after 4pm.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Government surplus commodities will be distributed in Hays at&nbsp;Unite Free Shelves (inside The Gamers Guild), 200 E. 8th Street in Hays, on Tuesday, May 20 from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Commodities will be distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis until we run out.&nbsp;Doors will not open until 7:30 a.m.

To be eligible for commodities, your household's total monthly income must be below: $2,322 Household of one $3,152 Household of two $3,981 Household of three $4,810 Household of four $5,640 Household of five $6,469 Household of six $7,299 Household of seven $8,128 Household of eight

*Add $830 for each additional family member after eight

Commodities included in this distribution are anticipated to be applesauce, corn, tomatoes, beef stew, canned salmon, vegetable soup, raisins, carrots, catfish, apple juice, Pollock, chicken leg quarters, pulled pork, green beans, mixed vegetables, turkey breast, and UHT milk.

RUSSELL — "Sod and Stubble," the motion picture based on the classic pioneer story, has come to theaters across the nation and on this Friday, May 9 it will premiere at the Dream Theater in Russell on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and at 2 and 6 p.m. on Sunday.

"Sod and Stubble" tells the story of the Ise family who homesteaded in Osborne County Kansas in the 1870s and battled through the many challenges of homesteading on the Kansas plains. The original story was written by John Ise in the 1930s with the help and remembrances of his mother Rosa Ise. In the 1990s, Von Rothenberger added over 150 pages of additional text to the new release. 

Now, the story of Henry and Rosie Ise comes to life on the screen through the work of an award winning cast and crew.

The film features Bailey Chase (Longmire, Homestead), Dodie Brown (American Horror Story), Barry Corbin (Lonesome Dove, No Country for Old Men), Mary McDonough (The Waltons), Buck Taylor (Yellowstone, Tombstone, Gunsmoke), Darby Hinton (Daniel Boone, Texas Rising), Rudy Ramos (Yellowstone, High Chaparral), Wyatt McCrea, R.W. Hampton, Mark Mannette, Delno Ebie and more. The film was written and directed by Ken Spurgeon.

"Sod and Stubble" was filmed in Downs, Wichita and El Dorado, Kansas.

It was produced by New Albany Films, Sod and Stubble LLC and distributed by Purdie Distribution.

TOPEKA — The Ranchland Trust of Kansas (RTK) is excited to announce the launch of its 14th annual photography contest, inviting photographers of all ages and skill levels to capture the natural beauty and working landscapes of Kansas ranching.

The contest is open to both amateur and professional photographers.

 Participants are encouraged to submit images that reflect RTK’s mission: "To preserve Kansas’ ranching heritage and open spaces for future generations through the conservation of working landscapes.” Photographers may submit up to five photos that highlight the diverse faces, seasons, and scenes of life on Kansas ranchland.

Entries will be accepted through Thursday, September 4, 2025.

Photos will be judged by a panel that includes representatives from RTK and the Kansas Livestock Association (KLA), along with this year’s special guest judge, acclaimed National Geographic photographer and Kansas native, Jim Richardson. With over 35 years of global experience, Richardson brings a distinguished eye to the competition. He and his wife, Kathy, own Small World Gallery in Lindsborg, where his work is showcased.

Winners will be selected in the following categories:

· Grand Prize · Landscape · Livestock · People · Wildflowers or Other Wildlife · Sunrise/Sunset · Youth (ages 5–17) · KLA Member · Fan Favorite (selected via Facebook voting) · Honorable Mention

Ellis County Habitat for Humanity fundraiser Wednesday at Applebee's

The Heartland Community Foundation is excited to announce that applications are&nbsp;now open for the 2025-26 Youth Action Council (YAC), a leadership and enrichment program for&nbsp;high school students in Ellis, Rooks, and Trego counties.

&nbsp;The YAC program aims to empower young&nbsp;people to be involved in community decision-making, cultivate a spirit of philanthropy, and instill a

Since December 2020, Heartland has granted over $100,000 to teen-led projects, and we want to&nbsp;continue supporting their efforts and empowering them to do even more. YAC members will have&nbsp;the opportunity to learn about generosity in a practical way by being generous and developing&nbsp;community projects.

There were 43 YAC members on the 2024-25 council from all eight high schools in Ellis, Rooks, and&nbsp;Trego counties.

&nbsp;Each county worked on a communitywide project. Those projects are ongoing and have provided exciting and important learning opportunities for members. Members also had the opportunity to review Heartland grant applications during the fall cycle. They completed a community service project in January, assembling 200 “birthday bags” to distribute to area food banks, providing all of the fixings needed to celebrate a birthday. 

Topics discussed each month have included leadership, fundraising, marketing, grant writing, and more. Members from 2024-25 council who have not graduated will be part of the 2025-26 council. Those who are graduating become part of a growing network of Youth Action Council alums.

“Joining YAC has allowed me to connect with students from other schools, creating a community where I can share ideas, tackle community projects and build friendships while being taught about the grant process. said Mia Coleman, a senior at Trego Community High School. Marlie Dobson, a senior at Plainville High School, added,&nbsp; “Being a part of YAC has brought me the best opportunities. My leadership and communication skills have grown tremendously in the last two years. I wrote&nbsp;and was awarded a grant to benefit my school. I love that I am able to help better my school and community.”

YAC meetings are held once a month during the school day for about an hour, rotating locations&nbsp;among individual high schools within each county. Twice a year, in August and January, the full&nbsp;council from throughout the Heartland area will come together to meet in a larger group in Hays.

The group will also be tasked with developing and volunteering for a service project.

In selecting new members, the Heartland Youth Action Council is looking for teens who:

 </figure>There were 43 YAC members on the 2024-25 council from all eight high schools in Ellis, Rooks, and&nbsp;Trego counties.&nbsp;Each county worked on a communitywide project. Those projects are ongoing and have provided exciting and important learning opportunities for members. Members also had the opportunity to review Heartland grant applications during the fall cycle. They completed a community service project in January, assembling 200 “birthday bags” to distribute to area food banks, providing all of the fixings needed to celebrate a birthday. Topics discussed each month have included leadership, fundraising, marketing, grant writing, and more. Members from 2024-25 council who have not graduated will be part of the 2025-26 council. Those who are graduating become part of a growing network of Youth Action Council alums.“Joining YAC has allowed me to connect with students from other schools, creating a community where I can share ideas, tackle community projects and build friendships while being taught about the grant process. said Mia Coleman, a senior at Trego Community High School. Marlie Dobson, a senior at Plainville High School, added,&nbsp; “Being a part of YAC has brought me the best opportunities. My leadership and communication skills have grown tremendously in the last two years. I wrote&nbsp;and was awarded a grant to benefit my school. I love that I am able to help better my school and community.”YAC meetings are held once a month during the school day for about an hour, rotating locations&nbsp;among individual high schools within each county. Applications open for 2025-26 Heartland Community Foundation Youth Action Council; Deadline May 9

In observance of Older American’s Month, Northwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging (NWKAAA) will be hosting its annual “Information Day” for older Kansans and caregivers on Wednesday, May 7.&nbsp;The theme this year is “Flip the Script on Aging.”

&nbsp;This event will be held at Big Creek Crossing (The Mall), 2918 Vine Street, Hays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with bingo from 2:15 - 3:00 p.m. 

The day will include speakers, hands-on activities, vendor booths, door prizes and lots of giveaways. Enjoy complimentary coffee, donuts, hot dogs, chips, bottled water, and snacks while supplies last.

Osborne County events for May

LA CROSSE — The Kansas Barbed Wire Museum is having its 59th annual Barbed Wire Festival from Thursday through Sunday at La Crosse City Auditorium in La Crosse.&nbsp;All ages are welcome to attend even if they're not barbed wire collectors. 

Barbed wire collectors from across the country will trade, sell and buy barbed wire samples at the festival. Along with these samples, people can sell any antique, tool, military or collectible items. 

An auction for collectibles will take place on Saturday, May 3, at 3:00 p.m.&nbsp;This festival is a great opportunity to expand a current collection or start a new one.

Besides the exchange of barbed wire and other items, attendees can participate in a few other events. 

A cookout and karaoke will take place Friday at 6:30 p.m. at La Crosse Fire District #4. This event is free, but donations are welcomed and will be used for museum education as well as supporting the annual “Old Fashioned Christmas.” Those who choose to participate in karaoke have a chance of winning a prize. 

Home-cooked concessions will be available both Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

&nbsp;On&nbsp;Saturday at 10:00 a.m. the World Champion Barbed Wire Splicing Contest has youth, women’s, and men’s categories. The winners from each category will receive a prize. 

A Midnight Masquerade Banquet will also be held Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Walnut Valley Senior Center in Rush Center. A $20 reservation is required per person and ensures dinner, live music, entertainment and an awards ceremony. Tickets are limited, so call&nbsp;as soon as possible. 

A church service and picnic will occur Sunday, at 11:00 a.m. at Grass Park Museum Complex, and it is open to anyone.&nbsp;

Barbed wire collectors from across the country will trade, sell and buy barbed wire samples at the festival. Along with these samples, people can sell any antique, tool, military or collectible items. An auction for collectibles will take place on Saturday, May 3, at 3:00 p.m.&nbsp;This festival is a great opportunity to expand a current collection or start a new one.Besides the exchange of barbed wire and other items, attendees can participate in a few other events. A cookout and karaoke will take place Friday at 6:30 p.m. at La Crosse Fire District #4. This event is free, but donations are welcomed and will be used for museum education as well as supporting the annual “Old Fashioned Christmas.” Those who choose to participate in karaoke have a chance of winning a prize. Home-cooked concessions will be available both Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.&nbsp;On&nbsp;Saturday at 10:00 a.m. the World Champion Barbed Wire Splicing Contest has youth, women’s, and men’s categories. The winners from each category will receive a prize. A Midnight Masquerade Banquet will also be held Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Walnut Valley Senior Center in Rush Center. A $20 reservation is required per person and ensures dinner, live music, entertainment and an awards ceremony. Tickets are limited, so call&nbsp;as soon as possible. Whiskey Mash Band featured tonight in Lovegrass free concert series in Hays

The Hays Symphony Orchestra will conclude its 2024-2025 season with "Romantic Visions" at 7:30 p.m. May 3, at the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center, 600 Park St.

Admission is free, but tickets can be reserved in advance at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.hayssymphony.org/">HaysSymphony.org.</a>

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.hayssymphony.org/"></a>The concert will feature pianist Irena Ravitskaya performing Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor.

Ravitskaya, who regularly performs in international venues, is a member of the faculty at Fort Hays State University and frequently collaborates with orchestras across the country.

The concert program also includes Douglas Lilburn's Concert Overture in D and Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 1, known as the "Spring Symphony." Together, the selections represent key works from the Romantic period and offer a diverse listening experience for concertgoers.

"We are excited to present this final concert to the community," said Brian Buckstead, director of the Hays Symphony. "The selections highlight significant works from the Romantic era and showcase the talents of both our orchestra and soloist. I believe this program will appeal to a wide audience, whether you're a long-time classical music supporter or attending your first symphony concert."

Sandy Jacobs, president of the Hays Symphony Guild, emphasized the accessibility of the event. "Our mission is to ensure that classical music remains accessible to all members of our community," Jacobs said. "With the generous support of our sponsors, we're able to offer this concert free of charge and invite residents from across the region to experience the power of live orchestral music."

Dick and Kay Werth of Auto World are sponsoring the concert itself, continuing their tradition of supporting the arts in Hays. Insurance Planning is sponsoring the post-concert reception, which provides attendees the opportunity to meet the musicians and celebrate the season’s conclusion.

Hays Symphony Orchestra concludes season with free concert Saturday

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) Secretary Christopher Kennedy has issued orders designating several Free Fishing and Free State Park Entrance days. The announcement was made at the April 24, 2025, Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission meeting.

The Free Fishing Days are June 7 and 8, 2025. On those days, anyone can fish by legal means without a Kansas fishing license. All length and creel limits still apply.

All Kansas State Parks will also offer free entrance on Saturday, May 3. Camping fees still apply.

“I encourage everyone to take advantage of these opportunities to enjoy Kansas’ incredible natural resources,” said Kennedy. “Whether you're casting a line, hiking a trail, picnicking on a beach, or simply taking in the beauty of nature, these days are meant to inspire connection with your family, friends, and the great outdoors.”

Along with these statewide events, Secretary Kennedy has also designated several park-specific Free Entrance Days that align with local events and programs designed to engage families, outdoor enthusiasts, and newcomers to Kansas state parks.
