CASA of the High Plains announces that Ashley Kingsley, part-time donor relations and public engagement manager, has submitted her resignation, effective Sept. 11.&nbsp; 

While her departure comes in the middle of our&nbsp;fall fundraising efforts, CASA remains committed to raising $30,000 by year's end to ensure that&nbsp;vital advocacy services for our children continue.

Current campaigns include the&nbsp;Cash for Kids Raffle. Tickets are $25 each, with drawings conducted daily through October and participation in&nbsp;Give Fest&nbsp;on Oct. 10 through the Heartland Foundation.

CASA fall fundraising efforts continue despite loss of donor relations manager

Rudolph 'Rudy' Augustine Jr., age 86 of Hill City, Kansas passed away Friday, September 19, 2025 in Hill City. He was born April 1, 1939 in Ellis County, Kansas to Rudolph Sr. and Regina (Reitmayer) Augustine. He graduated from Ellis High School in 1958.

Rudy was a retired heavy Equipment Operator starting for Trego County and then moving on to and retiring with the Graham County Road and Bridge department. Rudy served his country as a member of the Army National Guard. In his retirement he enjoyed his coffee time with friends, often meeting twice a day. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hill City.

Survivors include his daughter, Roxanne Zane of Wichita; brothers, Gilbert Augustine, Virgil (Ann) Augustine of Ellis, Richard (Dorothy), Arnold (Marilyn) of Hays and Darrell of Olathe; a sister, Irene Normandin of Olathe and a granddaughter, Angela Zinn and her children, Logan and Nolan Zinn.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin Augustine; sisters, Betty J. (Robert) Weber, Shirley (Don) Leikam; sister-in-law, Janet Augustine and a brother-in-law, Louis Normandin.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. 

Visitation will be Thursday 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM and Friday 9:00 AM until service time all at the church.

A combined parish vigil and rosary will be 7:00 PM Thursday at the church.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hill City, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis or for Masses.

TOPEKA – The Kansas State High Activities Association has
released classifications for both the 2025-26 school year as well as the new football
classifications for 2026 and 2027 based on enrollment figures as of September
22,&nbsp;2025&nbsp;in ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. Only ninth,
tenth and eleventh grades are used to calculate football classifications.

There will be some significant changes to Class 5A for
football starting next season. Great Bend and defending state champ St. Thomas
Aquinas will be dropping down to Class 4A and Mill Valley will be moving up to
Class 6A.

Larned and Hoisington will both move up from Class 2A to
Class 3A. Oakley will drop from Class 1A to 8-Player DI. Ellis, La Crosse, Ness
City, Quinter and Stockton will all drop from 8-Player DI to DII.

Granfield/Wheatland-Grinnell, Logan will drop to 6-Player.
Logan and Palco will no longer have their cooperative and both move to 6-Player.

The changes in overall classifications take effect

ACCESS General Public Transportation in Hays is still facing a 2026 funding gap after the city of Hays and Ellis County wrapped up their budget processes.

Jerry Michaud, DSNWK executive director, said the gap is about $161,000. Michaud said ACCESS is reaching out to the Kansas Department of Transportation, which has provided some funding, and potentially to legislators to explore funding solutions.

"We need general public transportation in the community. There's no question about that," Michaud said.

Michaud said ACCESS has not experienced federal funding cuts. He said the shortfall stems from limited state support through KDOT, insufficient local contributions, and rising costs for fuel, insurance, maintenance and vehicles.

Michaud said during the COVID-19 pandemic, match rates helped create reserves. However, those reserves are now depleted, resulting in a greater deficit heading into 2026.

Michaud said he also hopes to include the city and county in the conversation in finding long-term solutions for the service that provides transportation to elderly residents and people with disabilities.

Michaud said the city contributed $82,500 and the county $50,000.&nbsp;The service provided about&nbsp;28,000 rides in 2024, with more than 11,000 of those trips related to work.

ACCESS Public Transportation still faces 2026 budget shortfall

It’s not unusual for a minister in Ellis County to pastor multiple churches, particularly if some of those are in rural areas. But it&nbsp;is&nbsp;unusual for one minister to pastor churches from two different mainline Protestant denominations.

That is the situation for the Rev. Ben Houchen.

Houchen became the priest at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 2900 Canal Blvd., and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2422 Hyacinth Ave., in 2024. As of Sept. 14, he is now also the part-time pastor at First Presbyterian Church, 2900 Hall St.

First Presbyterian had been without a pastor since its interim part-time pastor, the Rev. Christine Wagner, retired in December 2024. Its nominating committee had already been searching for a new pastor for several months before that. Since Wagner’s retirement, First Presbyterian’s pulpit has been filled by lay persons from Hays, Ellis, and surrounding communities.

Houchen said the First Presbyterian Church leaders reached out to him several months ago about becoming their new pastor.

“At first, I had some reservations about taking on the work of a third church, but after prompting from my bishop and engaging with the wonderful folks on the First Presbyterian Pastoral Nominating Committee, I knew that this would be an amazing opportunity to bring all of these lovely people together to better serve Hays. The traditions and customs of the three groups may have differences. But the hearts of these people are dedicated to a Christ-like love for their community,” Houchen said.

“In every conversation I heard a heart cry to know how to do more. How to create better care, more love, more engagement, and more resources for the people of our city. These churches are coming together to improve and empower the lives of the people in Hays, America, and I just had to be a part of that,” he said.&nbsp;

Gia Scott, chair of First Presbyterian’s Pastor Nominating Committee, said in a news release, “We’re thrilled to welcome Rev. Houchen as our new pastor. His deep commitment to mission, youth, and community-building made him an ideal fit for our church. We believe this shared ministry will enrich both congregations and expand our collective impact in Hays.”

One of the challenges of pastoring three churches, of course, involves logistics. Houchen said the three churches will continue to have separate worship services in their respective buildings. But all of their worship times have changed.

First Presbyterian now meets at 9 a.m. Sundays, St. Michael’s meets at 11 a.m. Sundays, and St. Andrew’s meets at 1 p.m. Sundays.

“Our hope is to be one church with three services,” Houchen said. “That means we want to do ministry together, serve Hays together, create, and support, and empower our community together.

“But we are still maintaining and respecting the varied traditions of each group in their respective places of worship. I have had a good deal of practice with this already as St. Michael’s and St. Andrew’s have very different traditions of their own, even though they are both of the same denomination.”

Houchen said he is not an ordained Presbyterian minister, “and it won’t be a necessity. The Episcopal Church and The Presbyterian USA Church are finalizing work to be ‘in full communion,’ which will allow me to perform all the same rites for both denominations. But I will be attending some trainings to better understand Presbyterian polity and traditions so I can fully lead in the church with knowledge of and respect for their particular observances.”&nbsp;

Houchen earned bachelor degrees in pastoral leadership and biblical studies from Oak Hills Christian College in Bemidji, Minn., and he has a master’s degree in intergenerational leadership from Denver Seminary.

He served as a pulpit supply pastor in Minnesota for three years, as a youth and family pastor in Colorado for five years, and taught leadership studies classes in China for Fort Hays State University from 2014 to 2021. He began working as the administrator at the two Episcopal churches in Hays in 2022 before becoming the priest at both in 2024.

He and his wife, Nikki, have been married for 21 years and have four children, ages 11 to 20.

Houchen said he has two main goals for his churches’ shared ministry. One of those involves Feeding Hays, a ministry that St. Michael’s began in 2022. Houchen said his wife was the one who originally had the idea of the church providing a free hot meal every week, and someone else had the idea of making it a drive-thru.

Thus, Feeding Hays was born. The church continues to provide a free hot meal from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. each Thursday. There are no income requirements. Normally, the meal is spaghetti and meat sauce, a salad, and dessert.

The ministry that started out serving 20 to 30 people per week is now serving 230 to 250&nbsp; people per week, Houchen said. The meals are free, but some recipients wish to donate money to the church. Feeding Hays donates that money to pay off student lunchroom debt at USD 489 Hays public schools. Houchen said during the 2024-2025 school year, Feeding Hays donated more than $2,500 toward student lunch debt.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Recently St. Michael’s received funds from the United Way to hire an administrator for the Feeding Hays program. It is working on creating a board of directors for Feeding Hays so it can become a separate non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

Houchen’s first goal is “we want to find a way to increase the amount of food we serve and the number of nights we can serve it. But we also want to move beyond food service and help find ways to get people back on their feet and able to self-sustain.

“Getting them fed well is a huge building block towards that end. But it’s just the beginning of what we’ll be doing here. I can’t wait to see what all comes next.”

While his first goal involves meeting people’s physical needs, Houchen’s second goal involves his flocks’ spiritual needs.

“On a spiritual level, our purpose is to continue to stand out as churches that are here for the people who love their faith, as well as those who are looking for a faith to love,” he said. “Our churches aren’t just for those who believe in God. They are for those who don’t have anything to believe in--the lonely, lost, and homeless. They are a place of refuge. And as they continue to grow, they will first and foremost grow in their love, acceptance, and grace for each other.”&nbsp;

But I will be attending some trainings to better understand Presbyterian polity and traditions so I can fully lead in the church with knowledge of and respect for their particular observances.”&nbsp;Houchen earned bachelor degrees in pastoral leadership and biblical studies from Oak Hills Christian College in Bemidji, Minn., and he has a master’s degree in intergenerational leadership from Denver Seminary.He served as a pulpit supply pastor in Minnesota for three years, as a youth and family pastor in Colorado for five years, and taught leadership studies classes in China for Fort Hays State University from 2014 to 2021. He began working as the administrator at the two Episcopal churches in Hays in 2022 before becoming the priest at both in 2024.He and his wife, Nikki, have been married for 21 years and have four children, ages 11 to 20.Houchen said he has two main goals for his churches’ shared ministry. One of those involves Feeding Hays, a ministry that St. Michael’s began in 2022. Houchen said his wife was the one who originally had the idea of the church providing a free hot meal every week, and someone else had the idea of making it a drive-thru.Thus, Feeding Hays was born. The church continues to provide a free hot meal from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. each Thursday. There are no income requirements. Normally, the meal is spaghetti and meat sauce, a salad, and dessert.The ministry that started out serving 20 to 30 people per week is now serving 230 to 250&nbsp; people per week, Houchen said. The meals are free, but some recipients wish to donate money to the church. Feeding Hays donates that money to pay off student lunchroom debt at USD 489 Hays public schools. Houchen said during the 2024-2025 school year, Feeding Hays donated more than $2,500 toward student lunch debt.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Recently St. Michael’s received funds from the United Way to hire an administrator for the Feeding Hays program. It is working on creating a board of directors for Feeding Hays so it can become a separate non-profit 501(c)3 organization.Houchen’s first goal is “we want to find a way to increase the amount of food we serve and the number of nights we can serve it. But we also want to move beyond food service and help find ways to get people back on their feet and able to self-sustain.“Getting them fed well is a huge building block towards that end. But it’s just the beginning of what we’ll be doing here. I can’t wait to see what all comes next.”While his first goal involves meeting people’s physical needs, Houchen’s second goal involves his flocks’ spiritual needs.“On a spiritual level, our purpose is to continue to stand out as churches that are here for the people who love their faith, as well as those who are looking for a faith to love,” he said. “Our churches aren’t just for those who believe in God. They are for those who don’t have anything to believe in--the lonely, lost, and homeless. They are a place of refuge. And as they continue to grow, they will first and foremost grow in their love, acceptance, and grace for each other.”&nbsp;

The No. 17 ranked Tigers took control early, netting three first-half goals and added two more in the second half to lead 5-0. The RiverHawks managed to score once in the second half, but could not close the gap.

Fort Hays State broke through for its first goal in the 29th minute when Agustin Ayala had a stick back on a ball headed off the post by Bastian Carlman. Joseph Street also assisted off his long throw into the box. Three minutes later Tadhg Walsh struck for a goal off passes from Carlman and Street. Carlman added a goal of his own in the 42nd minute, assisted by Dalton Cates. The Tigers maintained control by limiting Northeastern State to just two shots.

The Tigers extended their lead early in the second half with a goal by Federico Heinrich in the 47th minute, assisted by Mario Leal Vales and Dylan Ashford. Carlman added his second goal for the match in the 54th minute, assisted by Heinrich and Lucas Garay, pushing Fort Hays State to a 5-0 advantage.

Carter Adams of NSU provided the only counter goal in response for NSU in the 62nd minute after the Tigers had pulled starting goalkeeper Payton Roehrich for Simon Niksch. Roehrich did not have to make any saves while he was in net for nearly 62 minutes, while Niksch made one.

Fort Hays State outshot Northeastern State 18-11 for the match as both teams had nine shots in the second half after FHSU led the shot count 9-2 in the first. Only two of NSU's shots in the match were on target.

The Tigers will rest the remainder of the week and prepare for a challenging road trip to Rogers State and Southern Nazarene next week (Oct. 2 &amp; 4). Rogers State is currently ranked No. 11 in the nation.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis moved to 2-2 overall on the season with a 7-0 win over Hastings College on Wednesday afternoon at the FHSU Tennis Courts. The Tigers swept doubles play and won all singles matches in straight sets.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Janae Montoya and Molly Gaddis had the quickest match, winning 6-1. At No. 2 Yone Pereiro and Ines Latorre won 6-3 and at No. 3 Ines Steeman and Bethan Gill won 6-4. Gill and Steeman remain unbeaten on the season at the No. 3 position, currently 3-0.

Gaddis blew right through her singles opponent at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Gill (No. 3) and Latorre (No. 4) each won 6-1, 6-1. Montoya took the No. 5 match 6-1, 6-2, while Steeman was consistent at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-2 result. The closest match was at No. 1, where Pereiro won 6-4, 6-3. NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State women's cross country team moved up four spots to No. 23 in the country in the latest USTFCCCA NCAA Division II National Coaches Poll, announced Wednesday. The Tigers opened the year ranked 26th nationally before moving to No. 27 last week.

Adams State remains atop the national poll after receiving all eight first-place votes, while four MIAA schools are also listed in No. 14 Pittsburg State, No. 18 Rogers State, No. 19 Missouri Southern and No. 21 Nebraska-Kearney.

Fort Hays State has had a strong start to the season, placing second as a team at each of its first two races. The Tigers defeated Division I Wichita State in the opening week of the season, with Emily Diercks placing first overall with a 5K time of 18:11.1. FHSU then sent a limited number of competitors to Bethel the following weekend, finishing just 10 points behind the leaders with primarily freshmen running for the Tigers.

The Tigers will return to competition Friday (Sept. 26) when they travel to Stillwater, Okla. for the Cowboy Jamboree. The women's 6K is slated to begin at 8:15 a.m. FHSU will then wrap up the regular season at home with the Tiger Open on Saturday, October 11.

A Wellington man was arrested Sept. 14 on multiple charges, including alleged underage drinking at Chuck's, 507 W. Seventh St.

Hays Police Lt. Brandon Hauptman said officers responded to a disturbance at the bar shortly after midnight, after staff allegedly caught 18-year-old Carter Gene Burnett of Wellington drinking underage.

Hauptman said Burnett allegedly resisted when staff tried to remove him, resulting in a scuffle. Staff eventually escorted him out of the bar and then called the police.

Burnett was arrested on requested charges of simple battery, underage possession of alcohol and underage possession of tobacco. Hauptman said Burnett sustained minor injuries. No injuries were reported among bar staff.

Wellington man arrested in Hays bar for alleged battery

RILEY COUNTY–&nbsp;Law enforcement in Manhattan have made two arrests this week after a lengthy investigation into multiple vehicle burglaries during the last two months.

Just before 3:30p.m. Tuesday, police arrested Jessup McClelland, 25, of Manhattan, in the 1100 block of Freemont Avenue in Manhattan. He is being held o a $12,000 bond on requested charges that include three counts of criminal use of a financial card.&nbsp;&nbsp;McClelland has previous convictions for burglary, obstruction and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Just after 12:30p.m. Monday,&nbsp; police arrested Adyson Westgate, 19, of Wamego in the 1800 block of Hayes Drive. He was jailed on two counts of criminal use of a financial card and one count of burglary to a vehicle. 

Westgate met the requirement of a $10,000 bond and is no longer in custody.

The RCPD thanked the community for sharing camera footage that assisted in this ongoing investigation and encourage anyone who may have been a victim of vehicle burglaries and has not yet reported it, to contact the RCPD at (785) 537-2112.

Bison sculptures and cornhole games are on Thursday's agenda for the Hays City Commission.

The Ellis County members of the Heartland Community Foundation Youth Action Council are asking for permission to place up to 25 life-size fiberglass bison statues on public spaces in Hays.

The high school students have raised almost all the $125,000 needed for the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/07bdd861-fa34-4686-8c39-2587327f3009">public art project</a>, which will depict the history and heritage of Ellis County in Hays, Ellis and Victoria.&nbsp;

Also to be voted on is a request from Arc of Central Plains for permission to proceed with <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/07bdd861-fa34-4686-8c39-2587327f3009">Phase 3 of the ARC Park</a>, 3300 Hillcrest.&nbsp;

The improvements would include two new shelter houses, a second gazebo-type picnic pavilion and nearby flower garden, along with two permanent cornhole courts with 10 total lanes and shaded dugouts.

Arc of Central Plains has raised the money for Phase 3, estimated to cost less than $500,000.

Ellis County Ministerial Alliance to meet Oct. 8

Margaret Ada 'Meg' Zweifel, 88, of Great Bend, Kansas, and
formerly of Waldo, Kansas, passed away Sunday, September 21, 2025 at the
Brookdale Assisted Living Facility in Great Bend, Kansas. 

Meg was born October 21, 1936, to Reuben and Nellie (Roth)
Francis, in Lucas, Kansas. Meg was united in marriage to Wayne C. Zweifel at
her parents’ home in rural Lucas, Kansas, on February 6, 1955. This union was
blessed with five children: Steven Wayne, Sheila Jean, Sherry Kay, Shelly May
and Bradley Charles. 

Meg’s early years were spent on Rocktown Ranch farm, where
the Wilson Lake is now established. In 1955, she and her husband moved to a
farm in rural Waldo and built a new home there. She graduated from Lucas High
School in May of 1954 and then attended Northwest Kansas College at Hays,
Kansas. She belonged to the Paradise Dell FCE Club since 1960, the TOPS (Take
off pounds sensibly)# ks.874 and was a charter member and was a KOPS (Keep off
pounds sensibly) since 1998, where she held every officer position. She also
started the Russell Red Hot Hatters of Russell and the Lucas Post Rock Red Hat
Brats of the Red Hat Society. She so enjoyed Biking Across Kansas for 27 years,
which she loved very much and made some very dear friends. 

Meg devoted her life to being a loving wife, mother and
homemaker to her growing family while her children were growing up. After her
children were in school, Meg went to work at the Russell County Courthouse for
five years, then was office manager at DSNWK. She then worked for several years
as Secretary/Bookkeeper at Smoky Hills Public Television Station in Bunker
Hill, Kansas, and was also a Tour Guide for Cheyanne Travel Agency of Great
Bend. After she retired, she accepted a part time position as a Loan Officer at
Rapid Cash in Russell where she worked for over 12 years until she was 83 and
retired again because of the COVID Pandemic. 

Meg was a long time member of the Amherst Methodist Church
in rural Waldo and was baptized in 1997. Meg enjoyed music and loved to sing
Hymns. She also enjoyed making homemade candies for Christmas to give away and
adored attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and school programs. She
was always excited to see her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren
and so enjoyed the family get togethers, including the traditional cocoa and
biscuit breakfast and all the one-on-one trips with her grandchildren to their
Condo’s in Pagosa Springs, Colorado and the marvelous family vacations to
Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Silver Dollar City in Branson and Washington, D.C. plus
many other wonderful places. 

Meg helped her husband with farming and harvest by bringing
out sandwiches for the crew and her creative casseroles, occasionally driving a
truck when needed. She faced life, as well as her many health challenges, with
calm acceptance and desire to adjust to whatever new reality she faced – which
she did without complaining. 

Surviving family include: daughters, Sheila Hinman (Greg) of
Lewis, Kansas, Sherry Pruter (Dale) of Great Bend, Kansas, Shelly Post (Ron) of
Great Bend, Kansas; son, Bradley Zweifel (Beth) of Waldo, Kansas.
Grandchildren; Jeannie Grimme (Casey), Jeff Hinman (Maggie), Jessica Hinman
(Bryce Brown), Luke Pruter (Maggie), Audra Rostine (Eric), Holly Johnson
(Eric), Megan McGuire (Ross), Alisha Livingston (Mathew), Carol Joyce Ridgley
(C.J.) and Payton Zweifel; great grandchildren, Connor Grimme (Madison), Claire
Grimme, Kaiden, Kenzlie and Kooper Rostine, Sheridan and Clayton Johnson,
Hudson and Hazel Hinman, Amelia and Kaladin McGuire, Wesley, Lily and Eliza
Livingston; great-great granddaughter, Oakleigh Grimme and a great-great
grandson on the way; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. 

Meg was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, on April 2,
2021; son, Steven Wayne Zweifel on June 12, 1968, in a tractor accident; her
parents; sisters, Lillian Waugh and Janeice Hochman; and her
granddaughter-in-law, Abby Hinman. 

Celebration of Meg’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M.,
Saturday, September 27, 2025 at the Luray Community Church in Luray, Kansas.
Burial will follow at the Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00
AM to 8:00 PM, Friday, September 26, 2025, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in

 </figure>Margaret Ada 'Meg' Zweifel, 88, of Great Bend, Kansas, and
formerly of Waldo, Kansas, passed away Sunday, September 21, 2025 at the
Brookdale Assisted Living Facility in Great Bend, Kansas. Meg was born October 21, 1936, to Reuben and Nellie (Roth)
Francis, in Lucas, Kansas. Meg was united in marriage to Wayne C. Zweifel at
her parents’ home in rural Lucas, Kansas, on February 6, 1955. This union was
blessed with five children: Steven Wayne, Sheila Jean, Sherry Kay, Shelly May
and Bradley Charles. Meg’s early years were spent on Rocktown Ranch farm, where
the Wilson Lake is now established. In 1955, she and her husband moved to a
farm in rural Waldo and built a new home there. She graduated from Lucas High
School in May of 1954 and then attended Northwest Kansas College at Hays,
Kansas. She belonged to the Paradise Dell FCE Club since 1960, the TOPS (Take
off pounds sensibly)# ks.874 and was a charter member and was a KOPS (Keep off
pounds sensibly) since 1998, where she held every officer position. She also
started the Russell Red Hot Hatters of Russell and the Lucas Post Rock Red Hat
Brats of the Red Hat Society. She so enjoyed Biking Across Kansas for 27 years,
which she loved very much and made some very dear friends. Meg devoted her life to being a loving wife, mother and
homemaker to her growing family while her children were growing up. After her
children were in school, Meg went to work at the Russell County Courthouse for
five years, then was office manager at DSNWK. She then worked for several years
as Secretary/Bookkeeper at Smoky Hills Public Television Station in Bunker
Hill, Kansas, and was also a Tour Guide for Cheyanne Travel Agency of Great
Bend. After she retired, she accepted a part time position as a Loan Officer at
Rapid Cash in Russell where she worked for over 12 years until she was 83 and
retired again because of the COVID Pandemic. Meg was a long time member of the Amherst Methodist Church
in rural Waldo and was baptized in 1997. Meg enjoyed music and loved to sing
Hymns. She also enjoyed making homemade candies for Christmas to give away and
adored attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and school programs. She
was always excited to see her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren
and so enjoyed the family get togethers, including the traditional cocoa and
biscuit breakfast and all the one-on-one trips with her grandchildren to their
Condo’s in Pagosa Springs, Colorado and the marvelous family vacations to
Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Silver Dollar City in Branson and Washington, D.C. plus
many other wonderful places. Meg helped her husband with farming and harvest by bringing
out sandwiches for the crew and her creative casseroles, occasionally driving a
truck when needed. She faced life, as well as her many health challenges, with
calm acceptance and desire to adjust to whatever new reality she faced – which
she did without complaining. Surviving family include: daughters, Sheila Hinman (Greg) of
Lewis, Kansas, Sherry Pruter (Dale) of Great Bend, Kansas, Shelly Post (Ron) of
Great Bend, Kansas; son, Bradley Zweifel (Beth) of Waldo, Kansas.
Grandchildren; Jeannie Grimme (Casey), Jeff Hinman (Maggie), Jessica Hinman
(Bryce Brown), Luke Pruter (Maggie), Audra Rostine (Eric), Holly Johnson
(Eric), Megan McGuire (Ross), Alisha Livingston (Mathew), Carol Joyce Ridgley
(C.J.) and Payton Zweifel; great grandchildren, Connor Grimme (Madison), Claire
Grimme, Kaiden, Kenzlie and Kooper Rostine, Sheridan and Clayton Johnson,
Hudson and Hazel Hinman, Amelia and Kaladin McGuire, Wesley, Lily and Eliza
Livingston; great-great granddaughter, Oakleigh Grimme and a great-great
grandson on the way; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Meg was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, on April 2,
2021; son, Steven Wayne Zweifel on June 12, 1968, in a tractor accident; her
parents; sisters, Lillian Waugh and Janeice Hochman; and her
granddaughter-in-law, Abby Hinman. Celebration of Meg’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M.,
Saturday, September 27, 2025 at the Luray Community Church in Luray, Kansas.
Burial will follow at the Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00
AM to 8:00 PM, Friday, September 26, 2025, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in

Darrell Blosser, 86, Hays, died Saturday, September 20, 2025
at HaysMed.

He was born February 21, 1939 in Sterling, Illinois, the son
of Aquila Henry and Mabel A. (Frey) Blosser.&nbsp;
He graduated from Sterling High School in 1957 then gave two years of
service through the Mennonite Volunteer Service Program.&nbsp;&nbsp; On May 5, 1961, he was united in marriage to
Joyce E. Sommerfeld in Hesston, Kansas.&nbsp;
They moved to Hays in 1967 and were married 30 years before she preceded
him in death on December 18, 1992.&nbsp; On
May 3, 1993, he was united in marriage to Diana M. Robbins in Olathe.

Darrell was the manager of the ready-mix department at
Allied, Inc. and even in his retirement years continued to enjoy his job as a
bus driver for USD 489.&nbsp; He was a
longtime member of the Hays Nazarene Church where he started the bus ministry,
transporting children to and from Vacation Bible School, and with Joyce, was a
youth sponsor.&nbsp; He was a member of
Gideons International, North Oak Community Church, and loved singing with the
Kansas Mennonite Men’s Chorus, Inspirations Gospel Quartet, and most recently
with the 4given Quartet.&nbsp; He was a loyal
Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs fan, liked model trains, playing fastpitch
softball, coaching high school fastpitch softball in Hesston, and listening to southern
Gospel and Barbershop music. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Diana of Hays, his daughter,
Valerie Juillerat and husband William of Larwill, IN, three sons, Lonnie
Blosser and wife Amy of Maysville, KY, Rick Blosser and wife Joni of
Hutchinson, and Jonathan Robbins and wife Autumn of Hays, his sister, Elaine
Stuckey and husband Jay of Fort Wayne, IN, 11 grandchildren, Brandon Blosser
and wife Megan, Nikki Blosser, Whitney White and husband Ryan, Courtney
Stanton-Shaw and husband Marshall, Conner Blosser and wife Katherine, Carly
Blosser, Caley Blosser, Mason Robbins, Jack Zeller, Barron Robbins, and Brielle
Robbins, 10 great grandchildren, one on the way, and numerous nieces and
nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joyce, and
two brothers, Elvin and Laverne Blosser.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, September
25, 2025 at North Oak Community Church with Pastor Will Haworth and Pastor
Lonnie Blosser officiating.&nbsp; Burial will
follow at 2:30 pm in Mount Hermon Cemetery in Paradise.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on
Wednesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until service
time on Thursday at the church.&nbsp; Memorials

Nearly two inches of rain fell in Hays overnight Tuesday. 

The official amount measured at the K-State Agricultural Research Center south of town was 1.90 inches.&nbsp;

The Eagle Media Center, 2300 Hall, received 1.43 inches, for a total of 3.10 inches of rain since Friday.

As of Wednesday morning at 9 a.m., 5.79 inches of rain has fallen, more than double the average of 2.24 inches by month's end.&nbsp;

The accumulative average of moisture for the year by the end of September is 19.84 inches. Hays has already reached 22.50 inches so far in 2025.&nbsp;

The rain is expected to end today with sunshine and warmer temperatures in the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/93ab47d5-5a48-4b5e-a583-60dae78d3545">three-day weather forecast</a>.

Rain keeps on coming to Hays

St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 2900 Canal Blvd., Hays, will hold its annual pet blessing following the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, Oct. 12.

Pastor Ben Houchen said, “Bring your beloved pets to receive a blessing and share in this joyful celebration of God’s creation.”

In addition, the church will hold a “Pet Supply Drive” that day, with donations going to the Humane Society of the High Plains.

Some kids who have been riding the bus to the school will no longer be eligible when students move into the new Hays Middle School building on 13th Street.

The former high school building is being remodeled to house the middle school. Students and staff are set to move to the new location in January.

To be eligible for transportation, students must live at least 2.5 miles from their school. If students live closer, the school district can't receive state funding for those transportation costs.

Russ&nbsp;Henningsen, transportation director, said 23 students will no longer qualify for bus transportation when the school moves.

However, some students who did not qualify for transportation when the school was at 201 W. 29th will qualify for transportation when the school relocates to 13th Street.

Henningsen said about 300 middle school students will qualify to ride the bus when the school moves.

However, Henningsen said not all students who qualify ride the bus. He said about 200 students now qualify to ride the bus, but only about half of them take advantage of the service.

Henningsen was asked if the district had enough buses to accommodate that many students. He said the district does not have enough buses to add any routes at this time. The district also lacks sufficient bus drivers to add new routes.

He said the district adjusts routes every year.

Superintendent Ron Wilson said anyone interested in applying to be a bus driver can contact the district. Drivers must have a commercial driver's license and undergo additional safety training.

Henningsen said all middle school families have been notified of the transportation changes.

🎙 Busing eligibility to change when Hays Middle School moves to 13th Street

Fort Hays State University's W.R. and Yvonne Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship awarded 296 student scholarships, exceeding $377,000, to business and entrepreneurship students for the 2025-2026 academic year.

The awards, announced at the W.R. and Yvonne Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship ceremony on Sept. 11 in the FHSU Memorial Union Ballroom, were presented to on-campus and online students.

Robbins Ambassadors Harper Lubbers and Kintzli Wagner, each receiving a $5,000 Robbins Ambassador Scholarship, spoke about their support as undergraduate students at FHSU and the impact that support has had on their educational experience.

“The Robbins College has a reputation for the success of its students and alumni, and this year is no different,” said Lubbers, a junior management major from Wichita. “Every year, hundreds of thousands of dollars are given from our generous donors to help support RCOBE students, granting them access to countless opportunities to grow and learn at Fort Hays.”

Wagner, a senior from Kansas City majoring in accounting, said Robbins College provides opportunities for students far beyond the classroom.

“With smaller class sizes, students can build meaningful relationships with professors,” she said. “The college strongly supports involvement through student organizations, professional workshops, and community involvement.”

“These experiences prepare us not only for successful careers, but also for leadership roles in our communities.”
