Each fall semester, Jana’s Campaign works with the freshman class at Hays High School to provide
Bystander Intervention Trainings. These trainings teach students how to safely, immediately and
effectively intervene when they believe unhealthy or violent relationship behaviors are occurring.


After providing Bystander Intervention Trainings to freshmen in September, on Thursday, Oct. 15,
Jana’s Campaign was invited back to Hays High for a follow up session to further discuss the
continuum of violence, recognizing ‘red flags’ or warning signs of unhealthy relationships, and to
review the bystander intervention strategies. Select upperclassmen, nominated by school faculty as
outstanding leaders, assisted in facilitating conversations about the information students learned at
the September trainings, and to discuss possible answers to questions raised on the post-training
surveys Jana’s Campaign administered at the initial training.


Nationally, one in three adolescents report being hit, slapped, stalked, sexually assaulted or
emotionally abused by a dating partner (CDC, 2019). This prevention education program, along with
other evidence-based programs Jana’s Campaign provides, helps prepare students to take the lead on
creating a culture of strong respect and to promote healthy relationship behaviors.


“Ongoing conversations about the issue of teen
dating violence are crucial to ending all forms of
gender-based violence. National domestic
violence awareness month is observed in
October, but these issues won’t disappear at the
end of the month. It is necessary to have
conversations about preventing violence year-
round,” stated Derek Ingalls, Education &amp;
Prevention Specialist at Jana’s Campaign.


The ultimate goal of Jana’s Campaign’s
programs is to stop violence before it starts. In
Ellis County Jana’s Campaign has worked with 12,687 students, from 9 schools – Kindergarten
through college. Beyond Ellis County, Jana’s Campaign has impacted over 72,500 middle and high
school students across 9 states, nearly 420 colleges and universities across 43 states, and thousands of
citizens since 2013.

Hays High students assist Jana’s Campaign with gender-violence prevention lesson

Longtime Goodland, KS resident, Dorothy Elaine Owens, 98, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at the Cheyenne County Hospital in St. Francis, KS.

Dorothy was born on December 11, 1921, in Polk County, Nebraska.&nbsp; She was the daughter of William and Dora McDaniel.&nbsp; At the age of seven, because of her mother’s health, she and her brother and sister went to live with her grandparents.&nbsp; A few years later Dorothy, her grandparents, father, brother and sister moved to Kansas and settled on a farm north of Edson.&nbsp; She attended Edson elementary and high schools.

She married Leonard Owens in 1939 and together they had four children; Elaine, Leonard Jr., Brenda and Darrell.

She believed in taking part in community affairs.&nbsp; She served as a 4-H leader, offices in the Smoky Iowa EHU, President of the Hospital Auxiliary, and served on the Sherman County Extension Board.&nbsp; She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council and was president of the Rebecca Circle.&nbsp; She was also a member of the Eastern Star for 25 years.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Leonard, an infant daughter Brenda, daughter-in-law Kathy Owens, a brother James McDaniel and a sister Shirley Garner.

She is survived by her daughter Elaine (Roy) Frieburger of Goodland, KS, two sons Leonard John Jr. (Sondra) Owens of Edson and Darrell (Diana) Owens south of Edson, KS; six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.&nbsp; She is also survived by two sisters Bernadine Amos and Marlene Perkell of Grand Junction, CO and a sister-in-law Annabelle McDaniel of Scott City, KS.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 25, 2020 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland.&nbsp; Private family graveside services will be held on Monday, October 26, 2020 at the Goodland Cemetery.

James L. Bowker, 77, of Goodland, KS, died Tues. Oct. 20, 2020 at Goodland Regional Medical Center.&nbsp;

Jim was born April 13, 1943 in Burlington, CO to Klein P. Bowker and 
Lucille Willy Bowker. Jim lived in Goodland for most of his life.&nbsp; He 
married Sharon Light and together they raised three children. &nbsp;

Jim worked for over 50 years at the Goodland Daily News/Sherman 
County Herald and The Goodland Star News.&nbsp; He was a member of the Brick 
Top Cruisers, the Goodland Recreation Board, the Goodland Elks Club, and
 the Northwest Kansas Quarter Horse Association. &nbsp;Jim was also a Sherman
 County Volunteer Sheriff.&nbsp; Jim was very involved in his children’s 
lives attending every single sporting event, often going back to work 
after the event to get the results into the newspaper.&nbsp; Jim loved to 
volunteer at the county fair.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents; his brother William "Bill" 
Bowker; and three sisters Alta Mae House, Kay Stephens and Janice Young.

Survivors include wife of 59 years, Sharon Light Bowker; daughter, 
Robin Bowker Bassett, Eagan, MN; sons Jeff (Margaret) Bowker, Lake 
Quivira, KS, and Matthew Bowker, Fort Collins, CO; brother Bruce Bowker,
 Centennial, CO; sisters Carol Tracy and Nancy Michael, of Limon, CO, 
Phyllis Dering, Ramah, CO, Beverly Bowker, Colorado Spring, CO, and 
Jacki Sandoval (Sip), Littleton, Co. Jim leaves behind his 10 cherished 
Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren.

Jim was the consummate storyteller and passionate about antique cars 
and horses. He spent his free time searching for antique treasures, auto
 parts, and tinkering with projects.

Services will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 4:00 PM MT at the Chapel in the Goodland Cemetery.

James 'Jim' L. Bowker

Rodney Lee Taylor, 77, of Colby, died Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at 
Citizens Medical Center in Colby Kansas due to an accident. He was born 
January 22, 1943, in Goodland Kansas, to Forrest and Dorothy (Scherff) 
Taylor. He grew up on a farm with his 3 sisters Cheryl, Regina, and 
Candace, and one brother, Barry. 

Though life was not easy in the 40s and
 50s, he rarely had anything bad to say about his childhood. Rod loved 
all music, loved to dance, was very outgoing in sporting activities and 
working on the farm. He graduated from Norton High School in 1961. He 
went on to attended Dodge City Community College on a football 
scholarship, as the quarterback, then later transferred to Panhandle 
State again on a football scholarship. While at Panhandle State, Rod met
 his wife, Judith Sutton. After graduating college with a Bachelors in 
Physical Education and Business, Rod followed in his father’s footsteps 
taking additional training to become a highway patrolman. Rod and Judy 
eventually had a daughter Regina in 1978 and son Jarrod a year later. 
Rod and his family moved to Colby in 1981 where he has resided since. 

He
 worked with the highway patrol as a Master Trooper, educator and drug 
handler with his dog Trooper. The law enforcement duo seized millions of
 dollars in illegal drugs and drug money over the years and a story was 
published in a state and law enforcement magazine.  Trooper and Rod 
retired together in 1997. Retirement did not suit Rod and continued his 
work in law enforcement as a deputy with the Thomas County Sheriff’s 
Office. He eventually was elected sheriff of Thomas County for 2 terms 
before retiring again in 2016. Through his years, he enjoyed tae kwon do 
earning a black belt status and placing nationally in tournaments, 
hunting, fishing, worked on the local school board and president of the 
school board, giving presentations to schools and community 
organizations, participating in fund raisers and instrumental in keeping
 ADAC open. 

Rod’s greatest achievement was his family. Local lakes were 
frequented for camping trips typically including fishing, hiking and 
enjoying nature. As his children became older, Rod and Judy stayed busy 
running around to sporting events. Rod was a very caring man to family, 
honorable and always did what was right regardless of what others may 
have thought or pressure him to do. He was respectful to everyone, even 
those he just met, friendly to all and would go out of his way to help 
out a stranger in need. He did have his ornery side as there are various
 stories of he and his law enforcement buddies always playing pranks on 
each other over the years, especially his best friend Scottie Legeer who
 was a fellow highway patrolman. 
Rodney was preceded in death by his parents; son Jarrod “Tank” Shane 
Taylor; brother Barry Taylor and brother-in-law Steve Sutton. 
He is survived by his wife, Judith, of Colby; daughter Regina (Brett) 
Suter and daughter Aurora, of Colby; sisters, Regina Rydquist, of Colby,
 Cheryl Cooper, of Denver and Candace (Alan) Baird, of Jefferson City,

of Las Vegas, NV and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Rodney Lee Taylor

Mary Lou Tillitson, 68, passed away on October 20, 2020, at the Cedar 
Village Care Center in Ness City, Kansas. She was born on October 29, 
1951, in Ransom, Kansas the daughter of Oliver and Jennie (Potter) 
Tillitson.

Mary Lou was an elementary school teacher at Saint Mary Catholic 
School, Garden City, Kansas, and the Ransom Grade School, Ransom. In her
 spare time, she spent many hours on the Big Creek Golf Course at 
WaKeeney.

Survivors include 4 brothers; Dave and wife, Kelle of WaKeeney, John 
of Ransom, Larry and wife, Darlene of Ransom, Bob and wife, Michelle of 
Arnold; and her sister, Ellen Burns of Ransom. She was preceded in death
 by her parents.

Graveside service will be on Saturday, October 24, 2020, 2:00 P.M., 
at the Ransom Cemetery, Ransom, Kansas. Friends may call at Fitzgerald 
Funeral Home, Ness City, Kansas, 9:00 A.M. - 8:00 P.M. Friday, October 
23, 2020 with the family present from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M.

Mary Lou Tillitson

Paul F. Kaus, 60, of Salina, passed 
away Monday, October 19, 2020.  He was born in Hoxie, Kansas to 
Frederick J. and Helen (Zerr) Kaus on March 10, 1960.  He married 
Christine L. Pechanec on August 31, 1985 in Timken, Kansas.  He 
graduated from Golden Plains High School, Rexford, in 1978 and then 
received in his Associate of Science Radiologic Technology degree from 
Fort Hays State University in 1982.   


Paul had a wonderful sense of humor and a passionate love for 
animals.  He and his family raised all sorts of animals on a farm north 
of Salina. He was very proud to have had one of his llamas go to the 
petting zoo at Rolling Hills Zoo.  He loved fishing, gardening, and 
being adventurous outdoors. His hard work ethic was instilled in his 
children, he never missed one of their activities and was very proud of 
all their achievements.  His greatest accomplishments were being a 
husband, a dad, a grandpa and being able to play and read books to his 
grandchildren. 


Left to mourn his passing is his wife, Christine, of the home; 
children, Kaylene Bacon (Cody) of Minneapolis, Trenton Kaus (Haley), of 
Manhattan, and Tyler Kaus (Lenae), of Wichita; grandchildren, Mallorie, 
Rylan, Cordell, Canter, and Caroline; mother, Helen, of Colby, KS 
siblings, Michael Kaus, of Bison, KS, Dona Kulhanek (Shorty), of Colby, 
KS, Ron Kaus (Charlene), of Colby, KS, Susan Hillebrand (Gary), of 
Norton, KS, and Kenneth Kaus (Marion), of Fredericksburg, VA. 


He is preceded in death by his father, Frederick and sister in law, Lora Kaus. 


Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 22, 2020 at Ryan
 Mortuary with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.  A private family Rosary 
will begin at 10:15 a.m. immediately followed by a private family Mass

 </figure>Paul F. Kaus, 60, of Salina, passed 
away Monday, October 19, 2020. He was born in Hoxie, Kansas to 
Frederick J. and Helen (Zerr) Kaus on March 10, 1960. He married 
Christine L. Pechanec on August 31, 1985 in Timken, Kansas. He 
graduated from Golden Plains High School, Rexford, in 1978 and then 
received in his Associate of Science Radiologic Technology degree from 
Fort Hays State University in 1982. 
Paul had a wonderful sense of humor and a passionate love for 
animals. He and his family raised all sorts of animals on a farm north 
of Salina. He was very proud to have had one of his llamas go to the 
petting zoo at Rolling Hills Zoo. He loved fishing, gardening, and 
being adventurous outdoors. His hard work ethic was instilled in his 
children, he never missed one of their activities and was very proud of 
all their achievements. His greatest accomplishments were being a 
husband, a dad, a grandpa and being able to play and read books to his 
grandchildren. 
Left to mourn his passing is his wife, Christine, of the home; 
children, Kaylene Bacon (Cody) of Minneapolis, Trenton Kaus (Haley), of 
Manhattan, and Tyler Kaus (Lenae), of Wichita; grandchildren, Mallorie, 
Rylan, Cordell, Canter, and Caroline; mother, Helen, of Colby, KS 
siblings, Michael Kaus, of Bison, KS, Dona Kulhanek (Shorty), of Colby, 
KS, Ron Kaus (Charlene), of Colby, KS, Susan Hillebrand (Gary), of 
Norton, KS, and Kenneth Kaus (Marion), of Fredericksburg, VA. 
He is preceded in death by his father, Frederick and sister in law, Lora Kaus. 
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 22, 2020 at Ryan
 Mortuary with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. A private family Rosary 
will begin at 10:15 a.m. immediately followed by a private family Mass 
of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 23, 2020 at St.

Paul F. Kaus

Betty Nadine (Simmelink) Schoen, age 99 years, 8 months, and 15 days,
 passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at Downs Care and 
Rehabilitation. Betty was born February 5, 1921, to George and Anna 
(Kuiken) Simmelink on a farm near Oak Creek School North of Downs.&nbsp;

Betty moved to a farm 9 miles North of Downs as a small child. She 
graduated from Oak Creek Grade School. On March 12, 1941, she married 
Meryl Emil Schoen of rural Cawker City. They celebrated 72 years of 
marriage. To this union Meryl and Betty were blessed with four surviving
 children. Meryl and Betty farmed in the Cawker City area until they 
retired off the farm in 1978. Upon retiring they moved to Downs. Betty 
was a member of the Irving Community Club and Red Hat Ladies Group. She 
was an active, life long member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Downs. 
She was baptized and confirmed on May 30, 1937. She was also an active 
member of the Ladies Aid at the church.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, her 
husband Meryl, sister Beverly Remus and grandson Kent Cordwell.&nbsp;

Survivors include children; Sheryl (Richard) Cordwell, Berryton, KS, 
Dennis (Brenda) Schoen Warsaw, MO, Bruce (Debbie) Schoen, Downs, KS, and
 Janet (Kyle) Tjelmeland, Pagosa Springs, CO. Ten grandchildren; Kim 
Bradford (fiancé Doug Klise) Berryton, Julie (Tom) Brush, Downs, Jeremy 
(Megan) Schoen, Olathe, Brady (Megan) Schoen, Downs, Barry (Sylvia) 
Schoen, Beloit, Brent (Kerry) Schoen, Downs, Keaton (Shayleen)

church. Interment will follow the service at South Oak Creek Cemetery, 
North of Downs. Masks and social distancing are encouraged. The service

Betty N. Schoen

L. George Evans, age 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.  He was born on May 18, 1929, in La Junta, Colorado, the son of Henry “Hank” Hobson Evans and Alice Goudy Allen.  George and Wanda moved to Leoti, Kansas in 1956 from Crowley, Colorado, and lived there until moving to Sharon Springs, Kansas in 2002.  In 2008 George and Wanda moved to Scott City, Kansas.  He was a farmer.

George was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas.  He was very involved in the First Baptist Churches in Leoti, Sharon Springs, and Scott City where he served various ministries as a deacon, choir member, soloist, and usher.  One of his passions was seeking to be a blessing to others.  George was an inventor, enjoyed flying, and was a US Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict.

On March 17, 1951, he married Wanda Mae Baker in Las Vegas, Nevada.  She passed away on August 6, 2013, in Wichita, Kansas.

Survivors include his One Son - Kyle and Shirley Evans of Scott City, Kansas, Two Daughters - Peggy &amp; Wade Graber of El Dorado, Kansas, Karen &amp; Lou Crotta of Fredericksburg, Virginia, One Sister In Law - Bertie Evans of Leoti, Kansas, Six Grandchildren, and  Nine Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife, One Sister - Dorothy Reeves, and Four Brothers - Bill Evans, Robert Evans, Oscar Evans, and Junior Allen.

Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 24, 2020, at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas with  Rev. Kyle Evans &amp; Rev. Wade Graber presiding.

Kenneth A. “Ken” Giebler, 91, Hays, died Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at HaysMed.

He was born May 28, 1929, on the family 
farm near Severin, Kansas the son of James and Virginia (Koerner) 
Giebler.&nbsp; He was a Sergeant in the United States Army stationed in 
occupied Japan during the Korean War.&nbsp; On August 11, 1972, he was united 
in marriage to Edna Urban at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.&nbsp; 

He 
owned and operated Giebler Electronics in Hays, was a Radio Engineer for
 KAYS and KRSL, and maintained and serviced towers for the radio 
stations and KAKE Television.&nbsp; His memberships included: St. Joseph 
Catholic Church, St. Joseph Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council 
#1325, the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, the Hays
 VFW Post #9076, and the Hays American Legion Post #173.&nbsp; He sang for 
many years with the St. Mary’s Choir, the St. Joseph Parish Choir, the 
Volga German Men’s Choir, and loved classical music and playing the 
piano.&nbsp; Ken enjoyed sports, was an avid Kansas City Royals and Chiefs 
fan, enjoyed woodworking in his shop, and loved playing cards and 
spending time with family and children.

Survivors include his wife Edna, of the
 home in Hays, a brother; Vernon Giebler and wife Lori of Hays, two 
sisters: Ruth Carter of Jacksonville, FL and Mae Desch-Boos of 
Lafayette, CO, extended family: the Mike and Christine Weber family of 
Hays, and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, two brothers: Joseph and James Giebler, and six sisters: 
Loretta Stecklein, Sylvia Stecklein, Ventura Weigel, Alice Schneider, 
Lorraine Dreiling, and Jeannie Rupp.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Monday, October 26, 2020, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with 
Fr. Matthew Cowen officiating.&nbsp; Burial with military honors by the Hays

Kenneth A. 'Ken' Giebler

Timothy “Tim” Royer Waggoner, 76, Hill City, Kansas, passed away 
Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at the Gove County Long Term Care, Quinter, 
Kansas. He was born October 22, 1943, to Galen and Agnes (Hildebrand) 
Waggoner in a rural farmhouse south of Morland. He was the youngest of 
three children.
 	As a young boy, he attended school in Morland where he met the love
 of his life, Helen Ray. After graduating from Morland High School, he 
worked the family farm and as soon as Helen graduated, they were married
 June 3, 1962 and she became his loving wife. With this unity they were
 blessed with four children: LaDonna, Galen Royer II, Angela, and 
Timothy “Gregg." 	Tim and Helen raised their family on the family farm south of 
Morland. He taught his children the true meaning of hard work by 
feeding livestock and working the land. He also believed in having a 
LOT of fun and family time. He was a true gentle giant. He was great 
with young people. When it came time to shock feed in the fall, he 
always enjoyed having the high school football boys come out and he 
worked side by side instilling an appreciation for hard work.
 	Each season brought fond family memories. In winter going out 
behind the house and sledding in the hills and coming in for hot 
homemade soup and a game of cards. After the work was done in spring, 
summer and fall, Sundays were spent down at the little farm pond 
fishing. 
 He loved to dance, especially polkas. He also enjoyed playing 
softball on the city league. As his boys grew and were getting excited 
about playing, he rallied the town and they built a baseball field in 
Morland, so all the boys could play and he coached.
 	Along with the family farm, cattle were his true passion, making a 
lifelong career as a cattle buyer. After retiring Tim and Helen moved 
to Hill City where he kept up with his farming practices growing 
tomatoes, squash, and rhubarb. He made the BEST rhubarb jelly.
 	Many times, he was seen around town helping deliver flowers for his
 wife during Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and special occasions when 
they owned the Unicorn Floral Shop. 
 	As the children married, he and Helen were blessed with 12 
grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. They cherished every moment 
with them.
 	Tim will be dearly missed by many friends and family. Survivors 
include his wife, Helen; three children, LaDonna and David Slaughter of 
Oberlin, Galen Royer Waggoner II and wife Kathi of WaKeeney, Timothy 
“Gregg” Waggoner and wife Evone of Quinter; 12 grandchildren; and 17 
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his 
infant daughter, Angela; and nephew Calvin Ray.

Betty Jane Wheeler, age 94. formerly of Ellis, Kansas passed away Monday, October 19, 2020, at the Catholic Care Center in Bel Aire, Kansas. She was born August 9, 1926, in Ellis to Daniel and Wilma (Hamburg) Schumacher. On November 5, 1946, she married C.O. “Chuck” Wheeler in Ellis. He preceded her in death October 31, 2006. Betty was a retired Bookkeeper from Ellis State Bank and Keller Furniture. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Ellis. Betty enjoyed all kinds of crafts; needlepoint, Christmas ornaments, knitted sweaters, afghans, and dish cloths. She enjoyed cooking holiday meals and flower gardening roses and peonies.&nbsp; She is survived by her children: Cindy Tull (Don) - Garden City, KS, Rhonda Ramsey (Duke) - Katy, TX, and Rory Wheeler (Joann) - Wichita, KS; 6 grandchildren, Matt Tull, Ryan Tull, Nicole Cherry, Darren Ramsey, Travis Wheeler and Tara Wheeler; 9 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was born August 9, 1926, in Ellis to Daniel and Wilma (Hamburg) Schumacher. On November 5, 1946, she married C.O. “Chuck” Wheeler in Ellis. He preceded her in death October 31, 2006. Betty was a retired Bookkeeper from Ellis State Bank and Keller Furniture. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Ellis. Betty enjoyed all kinds of crafts; needlepoint, Christmas ornaments, knitted sweaters, afghans, and dish cloths. 🏐 Area teams remain ranked in KVA poll

I can’t think of many things that provide so much joy, build community, improve memory, and help people “tap into” their feelings than music. Music has even been known to reignite memories in Alzheimer’s patients. As a true believer in the power and gift of music, I must say that I have really missed the marching band, the theatre productions, and the many ensemble performances of our student musicians at Fort Hays State University this fall.

Indeed, this year has been hard on our music and theatre department because of COVID-19 concerns.

“The pandemic has changed the way we make music and perform on stage, and has altered how we rehearse with ensembles,” shared Dr. Ivalah Allen, associate professor of music and theatre. “All recitals, concerts, and plays have been canceled for the semester. We have recent graduates who were in the process of auditioning around the country when auditions were put on hold. Some musicians have not had incomes since March. Despite all of this, our music and theatre faculty feel grateful to be able to share their craft with our students.”

Dr. Allen noted that vocalists have had a lot of fear instilled in them. It isn’t safe to sing as they have in “normal” situations of the past. As we learn more about Coronavirus being transmitted mostly through aerosols, this helps musicians better navigate these uncertain times.

For example, we started this semester with all applied voice lessons being taught online. While students typically come in and out of faculty studios many times a day for lessons, now faculty remain alone in their studio space while a student, in another location, sings with his or her phone, IPad, or laptop computer (with masks on).&nbsp;

While it is not ideal, the students are learning that they can still be successful through this new format. They have to rely more on themselves and their ear for intonation and the specific sounds of various languages. Most importantly, Dr. Allen reports that the voice students have made great progress through these different ways of teaching and learning.

To the pleasure of many of us on campus, lessons have also been conducted outdoors. Senior Dannielle Dickerson, a music education major from Riley, feels that the music department is doing its best to rise to the occasion. Danni really enjoys having vocal studio outside as “it has been such a blessing to sing while enjoying the beautiful weather.”

Is it working? Dr. Allen said that every one of her FHSU continuing students (sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students) returned to campus this semester. In addition, she has a large number of freshmen, giving her one of the largest applied voice studios she has ever had as a college voice professor.&nbsp; The department as a whole had very few students who didn’t return to campus this semester. “This is a true testament that musicians just want to make music any way they can,” Dr. Allen said. “Creating music is like breathing air for them – a true necessity.”

Senior music education major Gavin Blehm from Abilene believes that the ways in which the department has responded and adapted to meet the needs of its students is rather remarkable. As a woodwind and brass instrumentalist, Gavin told me that one of the biggest concerns was how those instruments may allow water vapor and air to potentially spread the virus.&nbsp;

Instruments now “wear” bell covers, which prevent any water vapor or air from leaving the instrument uninterrupted or unfiltered. The students wear masks with holes cut in them so that their instruments can contact their faces while limiting the air exhaled. “We are lucky that the department is still allowing us to practice. Like many things these days, there are inconveniences, but the department has adapted and is continuing to provide us with the opportunity to learn and grow as musicians,” Gavin shared.

Strings and orchestra professor Brian Buckstead shared that innovation has become a central part of our musicians’ professional lives. For Brian, that translates to a strings-only orchestra, reduced rehearsal time, social distancing, masks, and a thorough cleaning of music stands and chairs after each rehearsal.&nbsp;

“Even though the format of what I do has been reconfigured and reduced, the essential experience, the communal joy of music making, has remained intact,” Brian said. “Whether that means meeting with students on Zoom for online performances, or in carefully controlled in-person environments, the act of making music supersedes any and all environmental limitations.”

Brian is not only working hard for our students. In order to get community and regional musicians involved, he has created the “Hays Symphony At Home” concert series. During this period of social distancing and canceled concerts, Brian has invited Hays Symphony players to create videos of themselves performing at home. While the musicians cannot perform together as a symphony, his hope is that these individual performances will bring joy and inspiration to our community. This series began in early October and is available on the Hays Symphony Facebook page, as well as hayssymphony.org.

As for theatre, “the show must go on” – just without an audience. “Given the resilient spirit of my colleagues, to have students actively create and produce theatre remains a priority,” shared Director of Theatre Tomme Williams. So, faculty and students will perform Ibsen’s “Hedda Gabbler” in full costume with a set and lights, safely wearing masks, socially distanced, and to an empty room.&nbsp;

“While the wearing of masks and maintaining safe distance from acting partners presents challenges, it also has impacted us in many positive ways,” Tomme said. “Theatre is about human connection – that once-in-a -ifetime moment of exchange. The improvisational spirit of “yes, and” lives as an opportunity to reach out, to create connections despite differences, and to find new ways for our emerging theatre artists all to perform together.”

“More importantly, students will have that chance to socially connect once more. If we can find ways to turn social distancing into social togetherness, then we will have done a great deal.”

I cannot agree more with that sentiment and the spirit with which all of our faculty, staff, and students are embracing the challenges of this academic year: determined to grow, learn, and rise. As Roger Crawford said, “Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional.”

MASON: FHSU comes together to make beautiful music

PAWNEE COUNTY—&nbsp;Michael Patrick Stacey, 20 of Larned, was sentenced Wednesday on&nbsp;a conviction of Attempted Rape. District Judge Bruce Gatterman sentenced Stacey to 61 months in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett. He will also be subject to lifetime Sex Offender Registration.

On Sept. 18, Stacey entered a no contest plea in the case.&nbsp;

Had the matter proceeded to trial, the State would have presented testimony that on the night of October 25, 2019,&nbsp; Stacey entered the bedroom of a female roommate at his Larned home and attempted have sexual intercourse without her consent, according to McNett.

&nbsp;Stacey is eligible to earn up to 15% good time credit. The defendant will be subject to 36 months post release and lifetime registration as a sexual offender.

Stacey has been in the custody of the Pawnee County Sheriff since his arrest on November 12, 2019. He will receive jail credit towards his prison sentence.

PAWNEE COUNTY–A Kansas man waived his right to a preliminary hearing and entered a No Contest plea Thursday afternoon in the Pawnee County District Court to one count of Attempted Rape, according to Pawnee County Attorney Douglas McNett.

Had the matter proceeded to trial, the State would have presented testimony that on the night of October 25, 2019, Michael Patrick Stacey, 20, Larned, entered the bedroom of a female roommate at his Larned home and attempted have sexual intercourse without her consent, according to McNett.

Defense counsel indicated his client had no objection to the proffer as the defendant was intoxicated at the time of the incident and has limited memory.

After hearing the proffer of evidence and reviewing the defendant’s understanding of the consequences of his plea, District Judge Bruce Gatterman accepted the plea and found Stacey guilty of the amended charge.

 Sentencing is scheduled for October 21, 2020. As part of the plea agreement, the defendant agreed to waive his right to appeal the conviction and will be subject to lifetime Sex Offender Registration.

The defendant was originally charged with: (1) Rape of a victim overcome by force or fear; and (2) Battery. The crimes involve a single incident alleged to have occurred in Pawnee County on or about October 25, 2019. The Larned Police Department handled the investigation.

Stacey has been in the custody of the Pawnee County Sheriff since his arrest on November 12, 2019.

Betty Mae (King) Householter, 82, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, October 9, 2020, at the Hutchinson Regional Hospital in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Betty was born May 2, 1938, in Barnard, Kansas, the daughter of Emmett and Anna (Worpel) King.&nbsp; She grew up in Barnard and graduated from Barnard High School.

Betty was united in marriage to Robert Dean Householter on June 10, 1955 in Barnard.&nbsp; This union was blessed with three children; Jerrie, Robert and Lea.&nbsp; They made their home in Barnard; Hastings, Nebraska; Holdredge, Nebraska; Kenesaw, Nebraska, and in 1974 moved to Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Robert preceded her in death on September 19, 2005.

Betty was a Sales Clerk for J.C. Penny’s in Russell from 1974 to 1984.&nbsp; She then worked as a CAN for Wheatland Nursing Center and Gatewood as Assistant Activities Director from 1991 to 2001.&nbsp; She worked as a long-term Care Worker for SRS and retired as a Senior Companion.&nbsp; She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and the Trinity Thrift Store.&nbsp; She also belonged to the Collector’s Club.&nbsp; She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, square dancing and playing Bridge.&nbsp; Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Betty’s surviving family include her two daughters, Jerrie Lynn Parsons (Marty) of Russell, Kansas and Lea Anna Reddig (Doc) of Gorham, Kansas; son, Robert Dean Householdter Jr. of Pratt, Kansas; sister, Beulah Rathbun of Mulvane, Kansas; eight grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert; sisters, Deloris Wallace and Anna Bell King; and grandson Kane Reddig.

Celebration of Betty’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 29, 2020 at the Trinity United Methodist Church of Russell.&nbsp; A Private burial of ashes will follow at a later date.&nbsp;

Jolene was born on December 14, 1933, in Rooks County, Kansas, the daughter of Robert J. and Alice Irene (Hartman) Pfortmiller.&nbsp; She grew up in Natoma on the Pfortmiller family farm and graduated from Natoma High School in 1952.&nbsp; 

For many years, she worked in Hays, Kansas as a production manager for Stromgren Supports.&nbsp; Later in life, she moved back to Natoma and worked for the City of Natoma as a city clerk before retiring.&nbsp; During retirement, to keep busy, she was the apartment manager for the Paradise Valley Apartments in Natoma.&nbsp; She was a former member of the Red Hat Society, Natoma Historical Society and Natoma V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.&nbsp; 

She enjoyed swimming, walking, sewing, working in her flower garden and being outdoors.&nbsp; She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her many grandchildren and great grandchildren who called her Mimi.

Surviving family include her 2 sons Mick Barth and wife Rhonda of Oberlin, Kansas, and Marty Barth and wife MeLinda of Hays, Kansas; 8 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. &nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents and 3 brothers Gerald, Carol and Larry Pfortmiller.

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has amended its travel quarantine list to include those who have traveled to North Dakota and the country of Andorra beginning Wednesday.&nbsp;

Kansas evaluates the previous two week’s case rates by 100,000 population for states and countries. Locations with significantly higher rates — approximately 3x higher than Kansas — are added to the list. North Dakota has a two-week case rate 3.5 times higher than Kansas while Andorra’s rate is 4.9 times than Kansas.

This list is effective for all persons returning to or entering Kansas on the effective dates. A comprehensive list of those individuals needing to quarantine for 14 days includes visitors and Kansans who have:

Travel quarantines do not prohibit travel through Kansas. People from these locations may still travel through Kansas. If this is done, KDHE recommends limited stops, wearing a mask at rest stops or when getting gas and being 6’ from others when doing so. If the destination is Kansas, they would be required to quarantine upon arrival to their destination.

Mass gatherings are defined as any event or convening that brings together 500 or more persons in a single room or space at the same time such as an auditorium, stadium, arena, large conference room, meeting hall, theater or any other confined indoor or outdoor space. This includes parades, fairs and festivals. Mass gatherings does not include normal operations of airports, bus and train stations, medical facilities, libraries, shopping malls and centers, or other spaces where 500 or more persons may be in transit. It also does not include typical office environments, schools, restaurants, factories or retail/grocery stores where large numbers of people are present, but it is unusual for them to be within 6 feet of one another for more than 10 minutes.

Critical infrastructure sector employees who have travelled to these destinations should contact their local health department regarding instructions for application of these quarantine orders while working. Critical infrastructure employees, such as public health, law enforcement, food supply, etc., need to have the staffing resources to continue serving Kansans so the local health department may allow a modified quarantine. Please note the only exemption for these quarantine mandates for critical infrastructure sector employees is work – they are not to go any other locations outside of work.

Diane Marie Hickert, 53, Hays, passed away Monday, September 21, 2020, at Hays Good Samaritan Society.

She was born Thursday, May 4, 1967, in Norton to Gerald Henry and Marcella Theresa (Boor) Hickert.

Diane grew up on the family farm near 
Jennings. She attended the Jennings and Norton schools, graduating from 
Norton High School. On the farm she loved her kitties. While in high 
school she earned several trophies for bowling and playing basketball. 
In 1992 the family moved to Hays. Diane had been employed by DSNWK over 
the years. She enjoyed watching sports on tv, her craft projects, eating
 out with her family, going shopping with her Mom, and doing word search
 puzzles.

Survivors include her mother, Marcella 
Hickert, Hays; sister, Debra Dix, Stockton; brother, Darrell Hickert, 
Oberlin; three nieces; one nephew; her aunts and uncles: Leona Boor, 
Hays, Susan Boor, Hutchinson, Luella Linnebur, Bel Aire, Majella and 
Fred Hickert, Hays, Leon and Mary Jo Boor, Abilene, Jeannie and Jerry 
Patterson, Wakefield, and Charlene Goscha, Oakley; and numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gerald Hickert and sister-in-law, Shirley Hickert.

A private family service will be at

Norma was born at home in Rice County, Kansas, on June 9, 1925 to her
 parents Harry Appel and Hazel Wilson Appel. She grew up on a farm 
outside of Scott City, Kansas. She attended a small country grade school
 in Rice County, Kansas. She lost her Father in a drowning accident when
 she was 16. Her mother sold the farm and they moved into town. She 
graduated from Scott City High School in 1944. Shortly after graduation 
she moved to Seattle, Washington with her sister, Jessie. She worked at 
the ship yard, folding blueprints of Navy ships.

Norma moved to Dodge City, KS in 1946. It was then she met Ben Page 
on a blind date in June and they eloped to Cimarron, KS and were married
 on September 15, 1946. On April 11, 1948, their first child was born, 
Bruce Fredrick Page. On June 5, 1951, their second son was born, Bradly 
Del Page. On September 26, 1961, their daughter was born,&nbsp;Bridget June 
Page. In 1953, Ben built her what she called, her “Mansion on Haggard 
Addition”. They lived there for 42 years, raised their family and 
enjoyed their grandchildren.

During Norma’s life she enjoyed, doing ceramics, dancing, gardening, 
painting and most of all she loved and enjoyed her family. She took up 
painting when she was in her sixty’s. She was a natural and painted 
many, many beautiful and priceless pieces of art.

Norma and Ben moved to Hutchinson, Kansas in 1995. Ben was fighting 
cancer. On June 19, 1997 she lost her beloved husband of 51 years. She 
was lost without him. She moved to Lowell, Arkansas to live by her 
daughter and son Bradly. She painted, played with her grandchildren, and
 made some new friends at the Senior center.

In 2005, Norma was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. By the end of 
2007, she moved to a nursing home. There she enjoyed bingo, church and 
family visits until she went to heaven on October, 18, 2020.

Funeral services 8:30 a.m. Friday; October 23, 2020 at the St. 
Cornelius Episcopal Church, with interment following in the Maple Grove 
Cemetery in Dodge City, Kansas.&nbsp; Visitation 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 
Thursday at Ziegler Funeral Chapel in Dodge City, Kansas.

Gary Allen Ritter, age 70, passed away on October 19, 2020 at Meadowlark
 Hills retirement community with his family by his side. 
Gary was born to Lloyd and Ila Marie Ritter on April 8, 1950 in Norton, 
Kansas. He graduated from Norcatur Rural High School in 1968. 
He was married to the love of his life, Terri (Barrett) Ritter on June 
14, 1970 in Republic, KS. Gary was an extremely devoted husband and 
father and together they raised three children, Chris, Heath and 
Sabrina. 
Gary was a tremendous basketball player and played for Cloud County 
Community College, 1968-1970 and Fort Hays State University, 1970-1972. 
At CCCC Gary was one of only three individuals to score more than 1,000 
points and 600 rebounds in a career, leading the school to their first 
Region VI tournament victory in 1969 and CCCC’s first Prairie Junior 
College Conference Championship in 1970 and was inducted into the CCCC 
Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. He also helped the FHSU Tigers win the 
Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball championship in 1972. 
He graduated from FHSU with a degree in animal science and farmed in 
Norton county until 1986 when he took a position at Kansas State 
University as a herdsman in the animal science department. Gary, 
unofficially known as the cow whisperer, retired from that position 
after 31 years in 2017. 
Gary truly loved spending time with his family and friends whether 
watching sports or western movies or tail gaiting before cheering on 
K-State Wildcats football. Gary shared his talents and unending patience
 by serving as coach for Jaycees BB gun teams, summer league basketball 
and girls fast pitch softball. He and Terri spent innumerable hours 
supporting their kids in their various sports. 
He instilled a love of the outdoors and of hunting in all three of his 
kids, taking every opportunity to hunt for that next trophy or just a 
good day outside. He loved watching his grandchildren’s many activities 
and was always available for a big hug! 
Gary is survived by his wife Terri; his three children, Chris Ritter and
 Crystal Blanton, Clearwater, KS, Heath and Marci Ritter, Randolph KS, 
and Sabrina and Chris Ault, Belvue, KS; four grandchildren Megan, Brent,
 Alayna and Easton, one sister and numerous family members and friends. 
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his father and mother-in-law, Richard and Kaye Barrett. 
Visitation is planned on Friday, October 23 from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. with 
graveside services to be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 24th, at 
the Sedalia Cemetery in rural Manhattan, Kansas, with Reverend Kevin 
Larson officiating.

 Hills retirement community with his family by his side. 
Gary was born to Lloyd and Ila Marie Ritter on April 8, 1950 in Norton, 
Kansas. He graduated from Norcatur Rural High School in 1968. 
He was married to the love of his life, Terri (Barrett) Ritter on June 
14, 1970 in Republic, KS. Gary was an extremely devoted husband and

Gary Allen Ritter

Kenneth "Ken" Meis gained his wings on October 2, 2020, (Feast day of 
the Holy Guardian Angels), after a short but aggressive battle with 
cancer. Ken was born in Catherine, Kansas on August 16, 1936. He met 
Darlene Urban at just 15 years old. They were married at Saint Fidelis 
Catholic Church (The Little Cathedral of the Plains) in Victoria, Kansas
 on June 21, 1958. Ken held many jobs throughout his lifetime, but 
excelled greatly in his career as a carpenter and cabinet maker, 
construction worker, foreman, and superintendent. He was superintendent 
for the construction of the Blinder, Robinson &amp; Co. building and 
later took the job as that building’s facility manager. The Blinder 
building was one of his biggest construction projects, but he also 
helped build other skyscrapers in Denver and was an inspector for the 
construction of the Denver International Airport (DIA). He was a 
longtime resident of Westminster, Colorado.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; 
Aegidius and Celestina Meis; wife, Darlene Meis, and her parents, 
Boniface and Georgina Urban; brothers-in-law, Ron Booth and Dale 
Armstrong, and sister-in-law, Gracia Lee Rassette. He is survived by his
 brothers, Gary Meis and Daniel Meis; sisters, Darlene Booth and Francis
 Amidon; sons, Kevin Meis and Kelan Meis; daughter-in-law, Eileen Meis; 
brother-in-law, Michael Amidon; sister-in-law, Roxanne Armstrong; 
grandchildren, Benjamin Meis and Rosemary Meis; great-grandson, Oliver 
Masterson; lifelong friend, Brigitte Rieser, and many beloved nieces and
 nephews.

Kenneth was known for his loving heart, 
generosity, intelligence, and hardworking nature. There wasn’t a 
question he couldn’t answer.  He had an avid love of the outdoors. He 
introduced his children and grandchildren to his favorite hobbies and 
joined them on their many adventures throughout his lifetime. Ken will 
be remembered for his love of God, his pristine attention to detail, his
 talents in construction and multiple skilled trades, always remembering
 to add you and your family to his prayers, and his renowned ability to 
always catch that fish. Ken/Kenny/Dad/Grandpa, you were loved by so many
 and a friend to all. Though we will miss you, we are happy you are 
reunited with all those you loved and we are lucky to have you now as 
our guardian angel.

Kenneth 'Ken' Meis

Wanda Jean Pinkston, 83, died on Saturday, October 17, 2020, in Sedgwick.
 She was born on October 17, 1937, at Morrilton, Arkansas, the daughter 
of John Francis &amp; Jewel Dean (Newberry) Foshee. She married Marvin 
Gene Pinkston of September 19, 1953, at San Francisco, California. He 
died on March 5, 2020. 
Wanda lived in San Francisco until her marriage and then began a life on
 the farm in Lane County. After retiring, she and her husband moved into
 Dighton and later to Wichita. She was a member of the United Methodist
 Church in Dighton and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed being 
involved with her bridge club, supper club, playing bingo and being on 
the Dighton Bowl Traveling Team. 
She is survived by 2 Daughters- Sherrie (Larren) Dennis of Eureka and 
Terri (Steve) Kingsley of Sedgwick , Son- Gary (LaRae) Pinkston of 
Mitchellville, Iowa, 2 Half Brother- Paul (Caroline) Foshee and Kenneth 
(Linda) Foshee both of Atkins, Arkansas, 8 Grandchildren and 14 
Great-Grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, 
Sister- Francis James and Half Brother- Sammie Foshee. 
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 AM Saturday at the United Methodist 
Church in Dighton with Rev Berniece Ludlum officiating. Burial will be 
in Dighton Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from Noon to 8:00 PM

Center LTC.

He is survived by his son, Brandon Wilson and Stacey Maddox; three 
grandchildren, Levi, Chevy, and Jase Wilson; long-time friend and 
companion, Lisa Boatwright; one niece; and nine nephews.&nbsp; Ross is also 
survived by his brothers, Jeff Wilson and wife Gwen, Kelly Wilson and 
wife Marie, Jerry Wilson and Karol Chaffee; and his sisters, Marie and 
husband Vaughn Marcum, and Rebecca and husband Woody Warren; and 
long-time family friend Cindy Farr.&nbsp; Ross was preceded in death by his 
parents, Bill and Martha Wilson and Kay Michellich.

Ross was raised in Trego County and was a long-time member of the 
Eagles Lodge in WaKeeney.&nbsp; He spent most of his life working in the 
oilfield as a driller and roughneck.&nbsp; He was ornery and fun to be 
around.&nbsp; He loved people and telling stories.&nbsp; He was deeply loved and 
will be missed by many. &nbsp;

A memorial service will be 9:30 a.m., Monday, October 26, 2020, at 
Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney. &nbsp;There will be no visitation as 
cremation was chosen.
