Longtime Goodland, KS resident, Dorothy Elaine Owens, 98, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at the Cheyenne County Hospital in St. Francis, KS.
Dorothy was born on December 11, 1921, in Polk County, Nebraska. She was the daughter of William and Dora McDaniel. At the age of seven, because of her mother’s health, she and her brother and sister went to live with her grandparents. A few years later Dorothy, her grandparents, father, brother and sister moved to Kansas and settled on a farm north of Edson. She attended Edson elementary and high schools.
She married Leonard Owens in 1939 and together they had four children; Elaine, Leonard Jr., Brenda and Darrell.
She believed in taking part in community affairs. She served as a 4-H leader, offices in the Smoky Iowa EHU, President of the Hospital Auxiliary, and served on the Sherman County Extension Board. She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council and was president of the Rebecca Circle. She was also a member of the Eastern Star for 25 years.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Leonard, an infant daughter Brenda, daughter-in-law Kathy Owens, a brother James McDaniel and a sister Shirley Garner.
She is survived by her daughter Elaine (Roy) Frieburger of Goodland, KS, two sons Leonard John Jr. (Sondra) Owens of Edson and Darrell (Diana) Owens south of Edson, KS; six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters Bernadine Amos and Marlene Perkell of Grand Junction, CO and a sister-in-law Annabelle McDaniel of Scott City, KS.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 25, 2020 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland. Private family graveside services will be held on Monday, October 26, 2020 at the Goodland Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be designated to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.
