HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State faced off against No. 18 ranked Southern Nazarene Saturday afternoon (Oct. 19) at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The match ended in a thrilling 1-1 draw after the Tigers scored with less than a minute to go in the match. The Tigers moved to 7-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in GAC play, while the Crimson Storm moved to 7-3-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the GAC.

The Tigers started strong with two close attempts on goal, but it was the Crimson Storm capitalizing first, scoring just 10 minutes into the match. Unaiz Shajani picked up an assist on Junior Duran's goal for SNU.

Despite the setback, FHSU responded with six more shots before SNU managed another. The Tigers dominated the first half with an 11-2 shot advantage, forcing SNU goalkeeper Andrej Krivokapic to make two saves. However, SNU led going to the second half.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the match, Junior Duran found himself in another one-on-one situation with Tiger goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/wouter-van-der-borch/8367">Wouter Van der Borch</a>. This time, Van der Borch made a crucial save, stretching his left leg to deny Duran and keep the deficit at just 1-0.

The Tigers finally broke through in the final minute.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/bryce-dickerson/8344">Bryce Dickerson</a>&nbsp;sent a ball into the box, and although Krivokapic managed to punch it away, the ball fell perfectly to&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/marcos-german/8347">Marcos German</a>, who slotted home the equalizer to make it 1-1.

FORT SMITH, Ark. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team returned to the win column in dramatic fashion Saturday, rallying from two sets down to defeat Arkansas-Fort Smith in five sets, 18-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-13. The Tigers improve to 10-8 overall and 2-7 in conference play with the win, while the Lions dip to 11-8 on the year and 3-5 in MIAA action.

The teams traded blows all afternoon, combining for 31 ties and 16 lead changes across the five sets. FHSU kept things close early in the first set, leading as late as 11-10 before a UAFS charge turned a 14-14 tie into a 19-14 Lion edge. The Tigers then scored three in a row, including a pair of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/delaney-gish/8178">Delaney Gish</a>&nbsp;service aces, closing within two, before the Lions pulled away again to take the frame, 25-18.

Fort Hays State led for much of the second set, but never by more than three points. Four Schmedding kills and two more Gish service aces helped the Tigers take control early in the third set, with FHSU scoring 10 of the first 14 points. Fort Hays State continued to pour it on, later leading by as many as eight before another Schmedding kill handed the Tigers a 25-18 win.

After Schmedding dropped in six kills in the third set, she continued to dominate in the fourth frame, totaling seven kills. Fort Hays State never trailed in the set, scoring four of the first five points to set the tone. The Tigers kept the lead at or above two points for the majority of the set before the Lions scored two in a row to close within 19-18. Kills from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/ella-goodwin/8179">Ella Goodwin</a>&nbsp;and Schmedding helped FHSU regain the momentum before a kill from Reeves secured the 25-22 victory, sending things to a deciding fifth set.

Neither side led by more than two in a fifth set that included 11 ties and five lead changes. A 4-1 Tiger run helped FHSU go in front, 12-10, before the home team rattled off three in a row to retake control, 13-12. The Tigers punched right back, leveling the score at 13 on a Schmedding kill before Rains helped FHSU reach match point with a kill. Fort Hays State completed the rally following a Lion miscue, taking the final set 15-13.

The teams posted nearly identical attack percentages, with FHSU holding a slim lead .225 (72-26-204) to .223 (67-23-197). The Tigers combined for 11 team blocks, including seven from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/taytum-lovesee/7946">Taytum Lovesee</a>&nbsp;(two solo).

Schmedding led all players with 23 kills while adding 17 digs, two blocks and one service ace.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/kirsten-evans/7943">Kirsten Evans</a>&nbsp;racked up 24 digs, seven assists and one service ace, with Stucky contributing 53 assists, two kills and two blocks. Fort Hays State enters the game winners of its last two games, which included wins over Central Missouri and Washburn in Hays. The Tigers are still seeking their first road win of the season, while they are perfect at home so far this season. This marks the second-straight ranked opponent the Tigers will be facing in a road game. The last road contest was against a No. 23 ranked Central Oklahoma squad back on September 28.Pittsburg State is currently riding a three-game win streak. The Gorillas' only loss this year was in their third game of the season against Emporia State in Pittsburg. The Hornets left with a 24-21 win. HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs shook off a slow start and
then cruised to a 56-16 win over the Syracuse Bulldogs Friday night at Lewis
Field in Hays.

The Monarchs (5-2, 3-1 1A-D8) drove inside the Syracuse red zone
on their first two offensive drives of the game, but both drives stalled on a pair
of turnovers on downs.

On the second offensive possession of the game for Syracuse
(0-7, 0-4 1A-D8), &nbsp;the Monarchs' safety
Carson Liles intercepted a pass that set the Monarchs up with excellent field
position in Syracuse territory.

Adler Brown capped off the three-play drive with a 12-yard
touchdown, his first career rushing touchdown.

The Monarchs led 8-0 with just over three minutes left in
the first half.

After the Syracuse interception, they fumbled on their next
two offensive plays, and TMP scored on the next play.

The Monarchs scored three first-quarter touchdowns in less than
40 seconds.

Liles found Grant Nehls for a 22-yard touchdown pass after
the first fumble, making it 16-0 TMP after the two-point conversion.

The second fumble&nbsp;and third turnover in a row by the
Bulldogs led to a three-yard Austin Gilbert touchdown run from three yards out
as TMP built a 24-0 lead.

The first-half offensive onslaught continued into the second
quarter for TMP. The Monarchs scored on touchdown passes from Liles to Isaac Purinton,
from six yards out, and from Liles to Jacob Seib from 35 yards, making it 37-0
TMP.

Liles capped off the first half with two more rushing
touchdowns as TMP led at halftime 50-0.

With the running clock in the second quarter, Syracuse
scored on a safety and a pair of touchdowns that surrounded a Brown touchdown
as the Monarchs secured the 56-16 victory.

Liles completed 12-of-19 passes for 220 yards and three
touchdowns.

Seib hauled in five passes for a career-high 148 yards and a
touchdown.

TMP will close out the regular season Friday night at Plainville.

GREAT BEND - The Western Athletic Conference title was on the line Friday in Great Bend as Hays High hit the road to take on the Panthers. Great Bend snapped a four game losing streak to the Indians with a 21-0 victory.&nbsp;

The first half was a defensive fight. Neither team scored in the first quarter. Great Bend's best chance in the first frame was turned away when the Indians stripped the football away and recovered it.

The lone second quarter score belonged to Great Bend. Hays had a long punt return called back on a penalty that would have set up the Indians at the Panther 28 yard line. Two plays later Hays had a 25 yard pass play called back on a penalty. The Indians eventually punted the ball away from their own end zone into the wind.

Great Bend returned the punt to the Hays 15 yard line. Great Bend lost yards on the first two plays of the series then threw an incomplete pass. The Panthers dialed up the lone first half score on 4th and 20 on a pass to the back left corner of the end zone for a 25 yard scored. The Panther point after pushed the lead to 7-0.

Hays took the ensuing kickoff back to the 40. The Indians drove all the way down to the one yard line. A 2nd and goal play from the one lost yards. Hays was pushed back to the 13 on the next play due to a penalty. Hays could not score on their final drive of the half, trailing 7-0 at halftime.

Hays again drove into the red zone i the third quarter but couldn't score. The Indians converted a 3rd and 17 to set up shop at the Panther six. Hays ended up missing a field goal that kept the score at 7-0 in favor of Great Bend.&nbsp;

The Panthers broke off two big plays in the second half to make the difference on the scoreboard. A 49 yard scoring run followed by a 63 yard touchdown pushed the lead up to 21-0 for Great Bend with 10:08 left to go in the game.

The Indians last gasp drive to turn things around converted a third down near the Great Bend penalty but a penalty on the drive and dead ball penalty doomed the drive. Great Bend ran out the clock for the 21-0 victory.

Hays was penalized 13 times for 100 yards. Great Bend had 7 penalties for 80 yards.

Hays falls to 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. Great Bend is 7-0, 3-0. They will remain the number one seeded team in 5A West with one week to go.

Holden Lind ran for 145 of the Indians 260 total yards. Great Bend had 311 yards of offense.

Hays returns home for Senior Night to take on the 5-2 Liberal Redskins.

The Tigers moved to 6-4-1 overall, 3-3-1 in the MIAA, while the Bearcats improved to 6-2-5 overall and 4-1-2 in conference play. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime, but the Bearcats found the winning goal in the 51st&nbsp;minute.

The Tigers scored their goal early, just about three and a half minutes into the action. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Sean Payton made a point of getting to the Superdome long before he normally would for a game — six hours before kickoff — so he could ease into his emotional return to a place where he coached on the home sideline for a decade and a half.

“I'm glad I was here early,” Payton said, reflecting on the heady times in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, when the Saints became a morale-boosting, inspirational force in the lives of rebuilding residents.

“That was a unique time,” Payton recalled. “None of us understood what it would mean and how big it would become. Coming back here is different and kind of special.”

And made better by seeing his current team, the Denver Broncos, win handily.

Javonte Williams rushed for two touchdowns,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1847110818376437828">Cody Barton returned a fumble 52 yards for a score</a>, and the Broncos beat the banged-up and reeling Saints 33-10 on Thursday night.

Bo Nix passed for 164 yards and ran for 75 yards for Denver (4-3), which dominated statistically. The Broncos outgained New Orleans 389 yards to 271 while sending the Saints (2-5) to their fifth straight defeat.

“It was awesome. The Saints mean a lot to him. He was there for a while and had amazing success,” Nix said, alluding to Payton's franchise-high 152 regular-season victories with the Saints from 2006 to 2021, and his Super Bowl-winning season in 2009. “I’m happy for him.”

Payton's New Orleans teams had just two losses at home by 20 points or more, something the Saints have done twice in the past five days.

“It's been disappointing,” Allen said. “Injuries play a part of it but we've got to find a way to play better.

“We're making mistakes we shouldn't be making,” Allen added. “Us as coaches and players alike, we've got to figure it out.”

Allen was Payton's defensive coordinator in New Orleans, and the two embraced after the game.

“I felt bad,” said Payton, who has now defeated all 32 NFL teams as a head coach. “New Orleans is nicked up, got a lot of injuries.”

With Saints quarterback Derek Carr (oblique) missing his second straight game, there were rookies under center for both teams.

Spencer Rattler made his second straight start for New Orleans and his lack of experience was exacerbated by injuries all across the the offense.

The Saints were missing top receivers Chris Olave (concussion) and Rashid Shaheed (knee), the latter going on injured reserve earlier in the day. Two starting linemen, center Erik McCoy (groin) and guard Cesar Ruiz (knee), were out. Versatile tight end Taysom Hill (ribs) missed his third straight game.

Rattler was overwhelmed by a Denver defense that came in ranked fourth in the NFL in yards allowed.

He was 25 of 35 for 172 yards, rushed for 34 yards and lost two fumbles, the second of which Barton took to the end zone in the fourth quarter. Rattler appeared shaken up on the play and was replaced by Jake Haener, who connected with Cedric Wilson for New Orleans' lone TD.

Barton forced Rattler's first fumble, which led to one of former Saint Wil Lutz's four field goals.

Rattler was sacked six times, once by linebacker Nik Bonitto, who had a sack for a fifth straight game.

New Orleans' defense, meanwhile, could not come up with any momentum-turning plays.

Tryann Mathieu uncharacteristically dropped an errant pass by Nix that sailed directly to the veteran defensive back late in the second quarter. That allowed the the Broncos to close out the half with a field goal and a 16-3 lead.

“Early on in the season, we played good football, so I know this team has it in them,” Allen said, referring to lopsided victories over Carolina and Dallas. “But right now we're not playing that way and obviously there's a multitude of reasons why, and we've got to figure out how to get back to playing that type of football.”

During halftime, record-setting former QB Drew Brees was honored on the field to mark his induction into the Saints Hall of Fame. Team owner Gayle Benson presented Brees with a blazer, and a portrait of the club's all-time passer holding the Lombardi Trophy was unveiled.

Brees also was honored at a luncheon earlier in the day, during which Payton made an appearance to congratulate the star player he coached for 14 seasons.

“It's always good to see him,” Payton said.

Brees' 80,358 career yards passing rank second in NFL history behind only Tom Brady's 89,214.

For many fans in attendance, the halftime festivities were the highlight of the night. The Superdome was largely empty by the fourth quarter.

Broncos: CB Patrick Surtain (concussion) and RT Alex Palczewski (ankle) were inactive.

Saints: CB Paulson Adebo was carted off the field with an air cast on his right leg in the second quarter and taken to a hospital. Allen said Adebo had a broken femur. ... CB Marshon Lattimore left with a hamstring injury. ... OL Nick Saldiveri left with a shoulder injury. LB Pete Werner (hamstring) was inactive.

HAYS, Kan. – On a windswept Thursday night at FHSU Soccer Stadium, Fort Hays State faced the Newman in a conference match that ended in a 4-1 victory for the Tigers. Fort Hays State pulled within two points of the conference lead held by Rogers State. The Tigers are now 7-3-1 overall, 4-2 in the GAC, while the Jets moved to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the GAC.

The match began with both teams showcasing strong defensive efforts, keeping each other in check. The Jets had several early chances on offense and managed to capitalize on one in stunning fashion. Miguel Silveira launched a long-range shot from near midfield, taking advantage of a gusting wind to catch Tigers goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/wouter-van-der-borch/8367">Wouter Van der Borch</a>&nbsp;off guard, putting the Jets on the scoreboard. The Jets outshot the Tigers 5-0 in the first half due to the strong south wind.

However, the Tigers made quick use of the wind at their back in the second half, coming out of the break with renewed energy. ⚽ Tiger men blow past Jets in second half

GARDEN
CITY – The Hays High boys soccer team defeated Garden City 3-2 Thursday at
Garden City High School. 

The Indians had goals from Mason Schleicher and Henry
Speno to build a 2-0 halftime lead. Speno scored the Indians lone goal in the second
half to push the lead to 3-1.

The
Indians have now won two road contests and have won two of their last three matches
overall and are now 7-8 on the season and finish Western Athletic Conference play
3-5. 

HHS
closes out the regular season Tuesday in Hesston.

🏐 HHS wins twice in Junction City to extend win streak

HAYS
– The Hays High cross country team hosted the Western Athletic Conference meet
on a windy Thursday afternoon at the Rolling Ridge Cross Country Course. The boys finished fourth and the girls fifth.

Taevian
Maupin led the boys with a ninth-place finish. Evelyn Schmidt paced the girls
coming in 19th.

Garden
City had the top three finishers and seven in the top 10 and easily won the
boys title with 18 points. Great Bend finished second with 64.

Garden City junior Uriel Gurrola won the boys title with a time of 18:00.0.

The
Panther girls placed six in the top 10 and won the girls’ race with 22 points.
Dodge City finished second with 57 points.

Dodge City junior Karime Rueda Cienfuegos won the girls' race with a time of 18:21.2.

Panther girls placed six in the top 10 and won the girls’ race with 22 points.
Dodge City finished second with 57 points.Dodge City junior Karime Rueda Cienfuegos won the girls' race with a time of 18:21.2.

The Hays High Indians and TMP Monarchs both qualified their girls golf programs for their respective state tournaments earlier this week. Both teams won their regional.

The Indians have qualified for the state tournament for a 19th straight year after winning the Hutchinson 5A regional at the Carey Park Golf Course.

The 5A state tournament will be held at the Salina Municipal Golf Course on Monday, October 21st and Tuesday, October 22nd.

The Monarchs qualified one day later&nbsp;after they claimed the team title at the 3-1A Cheney regional at Cherry Oaks Golf Course.&nbsp;It marks the third time in the last four years the Monarchs have qualified as a team for the state tournament.&nbsp;

The 3-1A state tournament is held in Emporia also on Tuesday, October 22nd.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Eight months later, the pain of losing a second Super Bowl in five seasons to the Kansas City Chiefs has barely subsided for the San Francisco 49ers as they prepare for a rare regular-season rematch.

Memories of Chris Jones blowing up key plays with pressure, Patrick Mahomes creating plays with his arm and feet, and Travis Kelce getting open in key spots in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2024-score-chiefs-49ers-49b5dca51c05ab0f259cef0d7da76c2d">Kansas City's 25-22 overtime win</a>&nbsp;are hard to avoid as the Niners (3-3) watch tape of that game back in February in preparation for a visit from the Chiefs (5-0) on Sunday.

“Everyone understands that we’ve lost the two Super Bowls to them. So I mean, that can give a little post-traumatic stress when you turn on the tape," coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday. “I think that’s human nature. But you’ve got to make sure you don’t get caught up in that. This game has nothing to do with past games, that was last year.”

The game on Sunday marks the 10th time in NFL history the teams that met in the Super Bowl played again in the following regular season, with the defending champion going 6-3 in those games.

The 49ers don't want to dwell on that game and know a regular-season win won't make up for a Super Bowl loss. But they also can't avoid rewatching it in search of any tips that can help them this week.

“It’s definitely a little emotional," defensive end Nick Bosa said. "But at this point, it’s just a game so we’re just looking at the tape, trying to learn from it. A lot of similarities from last year. A few new guys, but a really good defense and an offense obviously has No. 15 (Mahomes) back there. So always dangerous.”

The loss in February stings in part because the 49ers had so many opportunities to come away with the franchise's first championship since the 1994 season.

San Francisco built a 10-0 advantage early and held three leads in the fourth quarter and overtime that Mahomes and the Chiefs were able to erase and eventually overcome thanks to coming up big in key moments.

Kansas City got pressure on Brock Purdy to force two key third-down incompletions that forced field goals in the fourth quarter and overtime. Kelce got loose for a 22-yard gain that set up a tying field goal at the end of regulation. Mahomes converted a fourth-and-1 keeper in overtime to extend a drive that ended with his game-ending TD pass to Mecole Hardman.

The most painful plays are the missed third-down pass at the end of regulation that Purdy said this summer still bothers him since it gave Kansas City time to tie the game and the inability to stop Mahomes on that fourth-down run.

Bosa crashed down on that play, which he said was his assignment, and Mahomes rolled to his right. When Logan Ryan stayed with Kelce, Mahomes kept the ball and ran 8 yards for the game-extending first down.“That was tough especially because we have calls that can negate that,” Bosa said. “They ran the zone read a few times and we just didn’t find an answer to it. I definitely thought he was going to hold it or keep it, but I’ve got to do my job, especially in a big moment like that. ... We definitely have a plan for the zone read this time. Hindsight is 20-20.”Linebacker Fred Warner said there were things San Francisco could have done better to stop that play but added that the game didn't come down to one snap.“You want to be great in those critical situations to ultimately to end and win the game, but there are little plays throughout the entire game you could have said, `Aw, that was the one. That could have won it,’” he said. “You’ve got to look at all of them.”Notes: Fill-in K Matthew Wright (shoulder, back) didn't practice.
