SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Eight months later, the pain of losing a second Super Bowl in five seasons to the Kansas City Chiefs has barely subsided for the San Francisco 49ers as they prepare for a rare regular-season rematch.

Memories of Chris Jones blowing up key plays with pressure, Patrick Mahomes creating plays with his arm and feet, and Travis Kelce getting open in key spots in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2024-score-chiefs-49ers-49b5dca51c05ab0f259cef0d7da76c2d">Kansas City's 25-22 overtime win</a>&nbsp;are hard to avoid as the Niners (3-3) watch tape of that game back in February in preparation for a visit from the Chiefs (5-0) on Sunday.

“Everyone understands that we’ve lost the two Super Bowls to them. So I mean, that can give a little post-traumatic stress when you turn on the tape," coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday. “I think that’s human nature. But you’ve got to make sure you don’t get caught up in that. This game has nothing to do with past games, that was last year.”

The game on Sunday marks the 10th time in NFL history the teams that met in the Super Bowl played again in the following regular season, with the defending champion going 6-3 in those games.

The 49ers don't want to dwell on that game and know a regular-season win won't make up for a Super Bowl loss. But they also can't avoid rewatching it in search of any tips that can help them this week.

“It’s definitely a little emotional," defensive end Nick Bosa said. "But at this point, it’s just a game so we’re just looking at the tape, trying to learn from it. A lot of similarities from last year. A few new guys, but a really good defense and an offense obviously has No. 15 (Mahomes) back there. So always dangerous.”

The loss in February stings in part because the 49ers had so many opportunities to come away with the franchise's first championship since the 1994 season.

San Francisco built a 10-0 advantage early and held three leads in the fourth quarter and overtime that Mahomes and the Chiefs were able to erase and eventually overcome thanks to coming up big in key moments.

Kansas City got pressure on Brock Purdy to force two key third-down incompletions that forced field goals in the fourth quarter and overtime. Kelce got loose for a 22-yard gain that set up a tying field goal at the end of regulation. Mahomes converted a fourth-and-1 keeper in overtime to extend a drive that ended with his game-ending TD pass to Mecole Hardman.

The most painful plays are the missed third-down pass at the end of regulation that Purdy said this summer still bothers him since it gave Kansas City time to tie the game and the inability to stop Mahomes on that fourth-down run.

After San Francisco kicked a field goal on the opening possession of overtime, the Niners could have won it with one stop on fourth-and-1.

Mahomes faked an inside handoff to Isiah Pacheco. Bosa crashed down on that play, which he said was his assignment, and Mahomes rolled to his right. When Logan Ryan stayed with Kelce, Mahomes kept the ball and ran 8 yards for the game-extending first down.

“That was tough especially because we have calls that can negate that,” Bosa said. “They ran the zone read a few times and we just didn’t find an answer to it. I definitely thought he was going to hold it or keep it, but I’ve got to do my job, especially in a big moment like that. ... We definitely have a plan for the zone read this time. Hindsight is 20-20.”

Linebacker Fred Warner said there were things San Francisco could have done better to stop that play but added that the game didn't come down to one snap.

“You want to be great in those critical situations to ultimately to end and win the game, but there are little plays throughout the entire game you could have said, `Aw, that was the one. That could have won it,’” he said. “You’ve got to look at all of them.”

Notes: Fill-in K Matthew Wright (shoulder, back) didn't practice. The Niners signed Anders Carlson to the practice squad this week for insurance. ... WR Jauan Jennings (hip) and DT Maliek Collins (knee) didn't practice. ... NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State women's cross country team moved up to 20th in this week's release of the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II National Coaches' Poll, announced Wednesday by the coaches association.

The Tigers jumped one spot in the polls after sitting at No. 21 in each of the last two sets of rankings. FHSU managed 79 points in the balloting process this week, up from 76 a week ago.

Fort Hays State picked up its third-consecutive victory last weekend, placing first at the ESU Invitational with a perfect team score of 15. The Tigers are yet to lose to a non-DI team, finishing fourth overall behind three Division I programs at the JK Gold Classic before emerging victorious at the FHSU Tiger Open, the Gans Creek Classic and the ESU Invitational.

The Tigers moved up to fifth in the Central Region, while FHSU remains the third-highest ranked MIAA program. Pittsburg State jumped six spots to move to No. 10, while Nebraska-Kearney dipped three spots to No. 17.Fort Hays State will face off with the rest of the conference next weekend (Oct. 26) when they travel to St. Joseph, Mo. for the 2024 MIAA Championships. The women's six-kilometer championship race is slated to begin at 11 a.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

CHENEY –The TMP-Marian girls' golf team is headed back to
the state tournament after they claimed the team title at the 3-1A Cheney
regional Tuesday at Cherry Oaks Golf Course.

The Monarchs placed three in the top 10 and all four team
members inside the top 15. 

TMP finished with a combined team score of 407 and finished
22 shots better than second-place Hesston. Larned was third with a score of
436.

It marks the third time in the last four years the Monarchs
have qualified as a team for the state tournament.

Freshman Brynn Schoepf fired a 96 and was second, two shots
back of first place Erin Tims from Larned.

TMP’s Jenna Brull was two shots behind her teammate with a
98 and finished in third place.

Emma Wasinger was sixth with a 102, and Ava Schumacher
finished in a tie for 13th with a 111.

Plainville’s Avery Grebiowec also shot a 111 and tied for 13th.

WICHITA, Kan. – Fort Hays State Men's Golf, which received votes in the latest national poll, turned in another strong performance by taking the team title at the Newman Invitational in come-from-behind fashion. The Tigers were in third place after day one, 10 strokes back of the lead, but surged to a one-stroke win on day two of the tournament. Cooper Scheck&nbsp;of FHSU took medalist honors by winning a three-way playoff. The event was held at Terradyne Country Club, October 14-15.

Newman led the tournament after round one, shooting 1-under par (283) as a team. That gave the Jets an eight-stroke cushion over Northeastern State, which carded a 291 in the first round, and a 10-stroke advantage over Fort Hays State, which shot 293 in the opening round.

Newman struggled mightily on day two in comparison to its first-round success, which allowed Fort Hays State and Northeastern State back into the team title race on Tuesday. Though scoring conditions were tougher for the entire field on day two, Fort Hays State put up the best total and it was enough to inch past both Newman and Northeastern State. The Tigers shot 302 as a team in the second round, nine strokes better than Newman's 313, to defeat the Jets by one stroke. Northeastern State shot 307 on day two and finished three stokes back of FHSU. The Tigers won the tournament with a total of 595, with the Jets (596) and RiverHawks (598) joining as the three schools to shoot under 600 overall.

The individual title was a thrilling finish as well with three players tying for first at 3-under par overall. Scheck&nbsp;of Fort Hays State emerged victorious as the individual medalist in the 3-man playoff, taking two holes to claim the title. Scheck and Grant Delsart of Newman each carded a 5 on the first playoff hole, while Mathieu Zerwin of Northwestern Oklahoma State was eliminated with a 6. On the second playoff hole, Scheck was one stroke better than Delsart for his first individual tournament title at Fort Hays State and his fourth-straight Top 10 finish of the fall.

Scheck had to create a rally just to get into position for the individual medalist playoff. He did it at the par-5 17th&nbsp;hole with an eagle 3 to move from 1-under to 3-under overall. He carded par on the final hole to finish 4-under par for the day with a second-round 67. He had four birdies and the eagle in the round to counter two bogeys, and he was bogey-free on the final 10 holes of the day. Scheck shot 72 (+1) in the first round, a round that included three birdies, before his second-day charge.

Zerwin of NWOSU charged hard on his final five holes, stringing birdie-par-birdie-eagle-par (-4) to go from 1-over to 3-under and into the playoff. Delsart of Newman went from even to 3-under over the final five holes with a sequence of eagle-par-bogey-birdie-birdie to get into the playoff. Scheck, Zerwin, and Delsart were the only three players in the field to finish under par overall.

Cole Streck was consistent over his two rounds, shooting 74 (+3) each day for a 148 (+6) total. He tied for seventh and had five birdies in the tournament. Jacob George&nbsp;placed 12th&nbsp;with rounds of 70 (-1) and 80 (+9) for a 150 (+8). He had six birdies in the tournament, including five in the first round. Parker Krob&nbsp;tied for 27th&nbsp;with a 158 total after rounds of 77 and 81. Jackson Rader&nbsp;tied for 38th&nbsp;at 161 with rounds of 80 and 81.The Tigers also took four members of the team who played as individuals in the event and two turned in top-10 finishes. In his first tournament of the fall, Jordan McCaslin&nbsp;shot 3-over par overall to finish alone in fourth place individually. He shot 70 (-1) and 75 (+4) to finish six strokes back of the three-way tie at the top. He had four birdies in the first round and 25 pars overall. Ashton Dowell&nbsp;tied fellow teammate Streck for seventh individually, matching the scores posted by Streck with 74 (+3) in each round. Dowell had five birdies and one eagle in the tournament. Tyler Cassaday&nbsp;(47th&nbsp;– 173) and Ben Deges&nbsp;(178 – 50th) also competed as individuals. Cassaday had rounds of 80 and 93, while Deges had rounds of 86 and 92.

FHSU topped four MIAA schools participating in the tournament, which also included Pittsburg State in fourth to give the conference a first-through-fourth sweep in team scores at the top.

The team win was the first for Fort Hays State in a tournament since 2021 when the Tigers won the Bethel Spring Invitational held in Hesston and Newton, Kansas at Hesston Golf Course and Sand Creek Station Golf Course. Scheck was the first Tiger to earn medalist honors in a tournament since Bryce Cowan, who tied for medalist honors in that same Bethel Spring Invitational in 2021.

The Tigers head to Topeka, Kansas next week for the Washburn Invitational. The tournament is set to take place at the Topeka Country Club October 21-22.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/madison-kerr/8370">Madison Kerr</a>&nbsp;was the top Tiger finisher overall in eighth place. She started strong as well, finishing round one with a 7-over-par 78, which had her in eighth place. She maintained that position on day two, carding a 12-over-par 83. She had a total of 161 (+19) for the tournament, only six strokes back of the individual medalist. Kerr had four birdies in the tournament.

Both York and Walz played as individuals in the tournament, while Norris and Blasi figured into team scoring.

Northeastern State claimed the team title in the seven-team field with rounds of 317 and 315, finishing the tournament at 632 (+64). Jessica Parker of NSU earned individual medalist honors, shooting 77 and 78 for a 155 total (+13).

The Tigers will return to action in two weeks when they head to Tulsa, Okla. to compete in the Tulsa Cup on October 28-29 at The Club at Forest Ridge.

Three Great American Conference teams are referenced in the poll, which includes No. 18 ranked Southern Nazarene and No. 24 ranked Rogers State aside from FHSU being in the receiving votes list.

Fort Hays State is home this week hosting a pair of matches against Newman on Thursday and No. 18 Southern Nazarene on Saturday. It will be the first meeting of the season with Newman, while the Tigers are looking to avenge a 3-1 loss to SNU in Bethany, Okla. earlier this season.

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. –&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/marcos-german/8347">Marcos German</a>&nbsp;of Fort Hays State received GAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors on Tuesday for his efforts in a pair of conference road wins for Fort Hays State last week. He recorded four points for the week, all on his four assists over two matches.

German produced two assists in both matches for FHSU last week. He assisted on both goals netted by Fort Hays State players in the 3-1 win over Ouachita Baptist in a game which also saw an own goal from the opposition. He assisted on the first and third goals of the 5-1 win at Harding. The week saw German pick up his first four assists of the season.

He joined Keshon Carter of Southern Nazarene (Defender of the Week) and Andrej Krivokapic of Southern Nazarene (Goalkeeper of the Week) as the weekly honorees from the GAC office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON -&nbsp;The streak continues for the Hays High girls' golf team. The Indians have qualified for the state tournament for a 19th straight year after winning the Hutchinson 5A regional yesterday at the Carey Park Golf Course.

Hays shot a 365, 25 strokes less than the host Salt Hawks. Salina South finished third with a 405.

 Jaycee Oakley shot a 5-over par 76 and led the Indians with a second&nbsp; place. Liz Dreiling placed fifth with
an 89 and Ava Erbert was eighth with a 97.

Newton's Naomi Koontz won the individual title with a 1-under par 70.

The 5A state tournament will be held at the Salina Municipal Golf Course on Monday, October 21st and Tuesday, October 22nd.

WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State Football received five more votes in the AFCA Top 25 Poll this week than it did in the week prior. The latest poll was released on Monday. The Tigers are coming off a 38-7 win over Washburn at home this past week.

Fort Hays State goes on the road this week to face the highest ranked team in the MIAA, No. 7 Pittsburg State. The Gorillas hold a 4-1 record on the season with their only loss to Emporia State, which currently holds the No. 16 ranking. Remaining undefeated is Central Oklahoma, moving up to No. 11 this week, which gives the MIAA three teams in the Top 25 once again. Fort Hays State is the only MIAA team in the receiving votes section this week.

Saturday will mark Fort Hays State's fourth game this season against an AFCA Top 25 ranked team. The Tigers have a 2-1 record against AFCA Top 25 ranked teams so far this season. The Tigers won home contests over No. 24 Angelo State and No. 12 Central Missouri, but lost on the road at No. 23 Central Oklahoma.

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– For the second-straight season and fifth time in poll history, Kansas men's basketball enters the season ranked No. 1 by the Associated Press (AP), as the AP released its preseason poll Monday. Kansas received 30 of a possible 60 first-place votes from the AP panel. Alabama is ranked second and had 14 first-place votes, while UConn, Houston and Iowa State round out the top five of the AP preseason poll.

Kansas is coming off a 23-11 season where it advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 33rd&nbsp;time in the last 34 years, a run that started in 1990. KU returns three starters led by Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year&nbsp;<a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/hunter-dickinson/15488">Hunter Dickinson</a>, a 2024 Consensus All-America Second Team, All-Big 12 First Team and the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year selection. TOPEKA - Former Fort Hays State women's basketball standout and coach Annette Wiles was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Sunday evening.

Wiles was one of 12 inducted in the ceremony held at Hotel Topeka.

Wiles was a two-time NAIA All-America selection and the NAIA National Tournament MVP her senior year when she helped lead Fort Hays State to the 1991 NAIA Women's Basketball national title. Wiles is also the all-time leading scorer in Fort Hays State program history with 2,407 points and a scoring average of 20.4 points per game. She is the only player in the program's history to score 2,000 points in a career and only player with a career scoring average better than 16 points per game. Wiles still owns FHSU career records for the following categories – field goals made (993), field goals attempted (1,700), and field goal percentage (.584). She also owns the single-season records for points (880, 1990-91), scoring average (24.4 ppg), field goals made (358), field goals attempted (582), and rebounds (364).

Following her four-year playing career at Fort Hays State, Wiles went on to have a successful career as a women's collegiate basketball coach. She put together a career record 409-227 (.643). Her first head coaching position was at Bethany (Kan.) College (164-52 record) for seven years from 1994-2000 before leading her alma mater Fort Hays State (136-89 record) for eight years from 2000-2008. She moved on to become head coach for seven years at Minnesota Duluth (109-86 record) from 2008-2015. She was twice named Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year and twice named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. She led three teams to NCAA Tournament appearances, which included Fort Hays State in 2005 and Minnesota Duluth in 2010 and 2012. She led Bethany College to four NAIA national tournament appearances. Following her time at Minnesota Duluth, Wiles returned to Kansas as athletic director at Topeka High School and then became the director of Hummer Sports Park in Topeka.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Women's Soccer improved to 6-3-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the MIAA with a 2-1 win over Newman University on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 13). The Tigers scored the first two goals of the match before Newman scored late to cut the margin in half. The Jets fell to 0-11-1 overall and 0-6 in the MIAA with the loss.

The Tigers picked up their first goal in the 30th minute on a crossing pass from Sullivan Kelly that found the head of Sydney Cotter inside the box. It was Cotter's third goal of the season, tying for the team lead. FHSU held a slight 9-8 shot advantage over NU in the opening half even while going into a steady breeze. FHSU keeper Tatum Hoge and Newman keeper Carla Apodaca each made five saves in the opening half.

Fort Hays State extended its lead in the 79th minute when Gracen Chaney perfectly bent a corner kick up over a leaping keeper and into the net. It was her second goal off a corner kick this season, and proved to be the game winner.

Newman kept formulating chances late in the game and cashed in on a long pass from Kinsey Logan to Delphine Sosu, who won a 1-on-1 situation with Hoge in the 85th minute. But the Tiger defense held off every other late charge from the Jets for the win.

FHSU finished with a 20-15 advantage in shot count. Hoge finished with eight saves for FHSU, while Apodaca had seven for Newman.

The Tigers remain at home for their next three matches. Next up is Northwest Missouri State on Friday, October 18 at 7 p.m.

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Avery Johnson rebounded from throwing a late interception by&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/RGIII/status/1845343431058420074">finding Jayce Brown</a>&nbsp;for a 50-yard touchdown with 2:14 remaining as&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/KStateFB/status/1845352115549471225">No. 18 Kansas State</a>&nbsp;escaped with a 31-28 win over Colorado on Saturday night.

The dual-threat quarterback for the Wildcats (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) finished with a rushing score and two passing TDs, both to Brown.

Leading 21-7 in the third quarter, the Wildcats saw the Buffaloes (4-2, 2-1) steadily chip away. Colorado took the lead when Shedeur Sanders threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to LaJohntay Wester with 3:12 left.

The score was set up when Johnson’s tipped pass resulted in a 59-yard interception return by cornerback Colton Hood, who was filling in after two-way star&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/travis-hunter-colorado-buffaloes-2b1dccbb45f5b415191c8672729d1389">Travis Hunter</a>&nbsp;left the game in the first half with an apparent shoulder injury.

Johnson needed only three plays to help Kansas State retake the lead. The Wildcats defense stopped the Buffaloes on downs to cement the win.

“Ultimately you’ve just got to make plays in big moments,” Johnson said. “Ultimately, that’s what our guys did.”

It was nearly the second straight magical comeback at Folsom Field for the Buffaloes. They beat Baylor on Sept. 21 in overtime after tying it up on a Hail Mary pass with no time left in regulation.

“Sometimes when you lose in life, you get your butt kicked and you've just got to take. Sometimes you lose, you say, ‘Dang, we should’ve won that. We should've had that,'” Colorado coach Deion Sanders said. “That was one of those types of games. That's not taking anything away from our opponents because they played their butts off.”

<a href="https://x.com/KStateFB/status/1845353222946341164">DJ Giddens</a>&nbsp;finished with 182 yards to become the first tailback this season to break 100 against the Buffaloes. Kansas State outgained Colorado 185 to minus-29 on the ground.

<a href="https://x.com/ESPNWichita/status/1845310769484775745">For Wildcats tailback Dylan Edwards,</a>&nbsp;it was a successful return to Folsom Field with a 1-yard TD run. He was a true freshman with the Buffaloes last season before transferring to Kansas State.

The Buffaloes' three-game winning streak came to a halt. More concerning, the health of Hunter, who appeared to hurt his shoulder catching a Shedeur Sanders pass and running full speed into safety Daniel Cobbs in the second quarter. The team also lost receivers Jimmy Horn Jr., Omarion Miller and Terrell Timmons Jr. to injuries.

Hunter is a Heisman hopeful for his play as a cornerback and receiver. Before leaving, he showed off his blocking skills by picking a defender and allowing Wester to score on a 25-yard pass.

Prior to the interception and the comeback, Johnson was having all sorts of fun on the field. He broke out the “Deion Shuffle” after a score. The cameras also caught Johnson taking a selfie with a fan in the stands who handed him their phone as he rode a stationary bike.

Johnson briefly went to the locker room in the third quarter holding his left side but returned to throw a TD pass to make it 21-7.

🏈Johnson throws for winning TD as No. 18 K-State beats Colorado

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State held Washburn to just 59 yards and no points in the second half and defeated the Ichabods 38-7 Saturday night at Lewis Field. The Tigers outscored Washburn 28-0 in the second half as they moved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA. The Ichabods dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the MIAA.

After Washburn scored on their first possession, the Tigers held them to just 125 yards the rest of the game while scoring 38 unanswered points.

The Tigers answered Washburn's touchdown with one of their own the very next possession. Caleb Heavner connected with Jayden Horace on a 4-yard touchdown pass in the back right corner of the endzone. The game remained tied until the final play of the second quarter when Carson Arndt connected on a career-long 52-yard field goal. It matched the fifth-longest field goal in program history.

The Tigers scored touchdowns on four of their five second half possessions. Heavner hit tight end Cale Cormaney on an 8-yard shovel pass with 6:21 to play in the third quarter. Just over a minute later, the Tigers delivered a big blow when Heavner hit Horace on a&nbsp;73-yard bomb. to push the lead to 24-7.

In the fourth quarter, Shane Watts scored on a&nbsp;1-yard touchdown run and Joshua Clark added a&nbsp;4-yard touchdown run. 

Fort Hays State finished with 464 yards of total offense, while holding Washburn to just 208. It was the second time the Tigers held an opponent under 250 yards this season.

Heavner completed 26-of-32 passes for a season-high 319 yards with three touchdowns. Horace had 10 catches for 160 yards and the two scores. Watts rushed for 72 yards and the score. Benyon Williams&nbsp;led the Tiger tackling effort with seven, Jaden Barker added a&nbsp;pair of sacks, while Demitri Scott added 1 1/2 sacks.

Sam Van Dyne led the Ichabods with 122 passing yards, while Tyler Bowden had 53 rushing yards. Cole Keller led WU in receiving with 36 yards. Planville native Jordan Finnesy led the Ichabods with nine tackles. and blocked a field goal.

Fort Hays State heads on the road to play nationally ranked Pittsburg State next Saturday in Pittsburg. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Carnie Smith Stadium.
