– After Monday’s first round was delayed then ultimately postponed due to weather
then darkness, the girls’ 5A State Golf Tournament was finished up Tuesday at
the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

Hays
High’s Jaycee Oakley earned All-State honors with a ninth-place finish. Oakley
had her first round suspended due to darkness on Monday. She completed it
Tuesday morning and shot a 7-over par 77 to advance to the second round where
she fired an 82 for a 19-over par 159 total.

Kapaun
Mt. Carmel’s Ximena Sarinana won the individual title with a 2-over par 142.
Andover’s Regan Dusenbery finished second with a 144 and Newton’s Naomi Koontz placed
third with a 148.

Kapaun
Mt. Carmel won the team title with a two-round 639, nine shots better than second
place St. James Academy. St. Thomas Aquinas placed third with a 693.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/jackson-rader/8547">Jackson Rader</a>&nbsp;was the team's top individual performer, finishing in a tie for 26th with a total score of +7. Rader's steady play featured rounds of 75, 72, and 73, highlighted by his second-round 1-over-par performance on the par-71 course. Over the tournament, Rader notched seven birdies.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/cooper-scheck/8548">Cooper Scheck</a>&nbsp;was next on the leaderboard for the Tigers, tying for 37th at 9-over par. Scheck carded rounds of 74, 75, and 73. RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. –&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/elias-ovelar-semeniuk/7935">Elias Ovelar Semeniuk</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/marcos-german/8347">Marcos German</a>&nbsp;of Fort Hays State Men's Soccer were each honors as players of the week in the Great American Conference on Tuesda. Ovelar Semeniuk was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while German was named Defender of the Week. Both players notched five points over two matches last week in Hays.

Ovelar Semeniuk produced a season-high five points in the 4-1 win over Newman. He scored both of his goals just 27 seconds apart. It was a new school record for fastest consecutive goals by the same player, topping the old mark of 1:14 set in 2012. He assisted on the final goal of the match as well. This is the second time he has earned this weekly honor in his career at FHSU.

German notched a goal and an assist in the 4-1 win over Newman. His assist was on the game-tying goal early in the first half and then he capped the scoring in the match the with team's fourth goal of the second half. He played all 90 minutes in the draw with No. 18 ranked Southern Nazarene and scored the game-tying goal in the final minute of the match. It was the second-straight week German earned a weekly honor from the conference office after receiving Offensive Player of the Week honors last week for producing four assists.

The Tiger duo joins Declan Viljoen of Rogers State (Goalkeeper of the Week) as the weekly honorees from the conference office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State Football continued to receive votes in the latest AFCA Top 25 Poll, released on Monday (Oct. 21). The Tigers are coming off a tough one-point loss at then No. 7 ranked Pittsburg State this past weekend.

Fort Hays State is one of four MIAA schools represented in the poll, but the only one of the four in the receiving votes list. Pittsburg State remains the highest ranked team in the MIAA at No. 6, followed by undefeated Central Oklahoma at No. 9 and Emporia State at No. 14.

The Tigers are set to host their final home game of the season on Saturday (Oct. 26) when they face Missouri Southern.

In the latest D2Football.com Top 25 Poll, Pittsburg State is ranked No. 3, Central Oklahoma is No. 6, and Emporia State is No. 15.

🏈FHSU Football Continues to Receive Votes in AFCA Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs just keep winning, even as the injuries continue to pile up.

The latest came Sunday, when the two-time defending Super Bowl champions lost cornerback Jaylen Watson to a season-ending ankle injury and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster to a hamstring injury in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-49ers-score-2644f133c4152bdb0041da43b4bb1e82">their 28-18 victory over the 49ers</a>. It was their 12th straight win going back to last season, and a whole bunch have come despite injuries to some of their best players.

“It starts with your locker room, your coaches, and just how do the guys like each other,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday when asked about overcoming the adversity. "And that whole trust thing that they develop with each other is important.

“Everything isn't going to be roses when you're playing,” Reid said. “You're going to have ups and downs in games. Very few teams win every game during a season. You literally take it game by game. Make sure you're taking care of business this week. But I think the locker room has a big part of that. The coaches' attitudes have a big part of that.”

Watson had been a rising start in coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's defense, helping Kansas City shut down some of the NFL's best offenses through the first six games of the season. Nazeeh Johnson, who has made a comeback from a torn knee ligament, would be next in line to replace him heading into Sunday's game against the Raiders in Las Vegas.

Just as concerning is the injury to Smith-Schuster, given what already has transpired in the Chiefs' wide receiver room. Rashee Rice had knee surgery and Marquise Brown had shoulder surgery, and both are done for the season.

Reid said Monday that Smith-Schuster would miss at least one game. And given his injury history, and how many games remain this season, the Chiefs almost certainly will explore the market for reinforcements ahead of the Nov. 5 trade deadline.

The Chiefs also have Nikko Remigio, Montrell Washington and Justyn Ross available on their practice squad.

It was their 12th straight win going back to last season, and a whole bunch have come despite injuries to some of their best players.“It starts with your locker room, your coaches, and just how do the guys like each other,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday when asked about overcoming the adversity. "And that whole trust thing that they develop with each other is important.“Everything isn't going to be roses when you're playing,” Reid said. “You're going to have ups and downs in games. Very few teams win every game during a season. You literally take it game by game. Make sure you're taking care of business this week. But I think the locker room has a big part of that. The coaches' attitudes have a big part of that.”Watson had been a rising start in coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's defense, helping Kansas City shut down some of the NFL's best offenses through the first six games of the season. LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas senior cornerback Cobee Bryant has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week following a standout three interception performance in Kansas' 42-14 victory over Houston, the conference announced Monday.

Bryant's record-setting day included tying the single-game school record with three interceptions, while adding three tackles (two solo, one assist) and one tackle-for-loss. After Kansas scored a touchdown on its opening drive, Bryant ended Houston's first drive of the day near midfield by intercepting UH starting quarterback Zeon Chriss and returning it into Cougar territory. The interception set up a one-play scoring drive for Kansas and allowed the Jayhawks to take an early 14-0 lead.

Kansas led 28-14 near the end of the first half, when Houston got the ball back and was threatening to score before Bryant struck for the second time. This time, he intercepted UH backup Donovan Smith to end a threat after the Cougars moved into Jayhawk territory. Bryant's third pick came on Houston's next possession, a seven-play drive to open the second half. The Cougars attempted a trick play, but Smith again found Bryant, who made a diving interception at the Kansas 5-yard line.

This was the first time that Bryant has recorded multiple interceptions in a game during his standout career. He is the first Jayhawk to record multiple interceptions since Hasan Defense at West Virginia in 2018, while becoming the fourth player in school history with three interceptions in a game. The three players who shared the record before Saturday all played at Kansas during the 1950's, with the most recent player to accomplish the feat being Bill Crank, who had three interceptions in a game vs. Tulane on Oct. 25, 1958. Bryant is also just the just the seventh Big 12 player to accomplish the feat in a conference game and the first since Allen Chapman picked off three passes for Kansas State on Nov. 3, 2012.

With his three interceptions on Saturday, Bryant now has 13 career interceptions, which is tied for the second most in school history, tying Aqib Talib (13, 2005-07).  

This is the third career Big 12 weekly honor for Bryant, who previously won the award on Sept. 25, 2023, for his efforts in a 38-27 victory over BYU. He was also honored on Sept. 12, 2022, after recording the game-clinching interception for Kansas in an overtime victory at West Virginia. Bryant is the first Jayhawk to earn a Big 12 award this season and the first overall since Trevor Wilson was named the Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 9, 2023.

Additionally on Monday morning, Bryant was chosen as the East-West Shrine Bowl Breakout Defensive Player of the Week and the Reese's Senior Bowl Co-Defensive Player of the Week. Both awards recognize all-star game eligible players for displaying the most NFL traits that week.

Kansas returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 26, facing No. 16 Kansas State in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown. Kickoff from Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan is set for 7 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on ESPN2.

Alabama's Mark Sears and North Carolina's RJ Davis looked into the possibility of leaving for the NBA before deciding to return for another college season.

Their decisions helped their teams earn top-10 rankings&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">in the AP Top 25</a>&nbsp;and earned both players some preseason honors, too.

Sears was a near-unanimous selection for The Associated Press preseason All-America men's basketball team released Monday, earning all but one vote from a 55-person national media panel. Davis was right behind him, nabbing 51 votes.

They were joined by Kansas big man Hunter Dickinson, Auburn forward Johni Broome, Arizona guard Caleb Love and Duke freshman Cooper Flagg. Love and Flagg tied for the final spot, creating a six-man team that includes only the ACC, Big 12 and SEC.

Sears was a key cog in the Crimson Tide's first trip to the Final Four a year ago, orchestrating one of college basketball's highest-scoring teams.

The 6-foot-1 guard was named a second-team AP All-America after averaging 21.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists. He was the first Division I player in 31 years to have 795 points, 150 rebounds, 145 assists and 95 three-pointers in a single season while breaking the Alabama single-season record with 26 games with at least 20 points.

Sears worked out for NBA scouts during the offseason before deciding to return to Alabama, earning the Crimson Tide a No. 2 ranking in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">preseason AP Top 25</a>.

“I saw the team that we had and I wanted to be a part of it, and bring home Alabama’s first national championship in basketball,” Sears said.

Across the state at rival Auburn, Broome made a quick decision about his future, announcing in April that he would be back for a fifth season.

The 6-10 forward was a third-team AP All-American last season after averaging 16.5 points and 8.5 rebounds while shooting nearly 55% from the floor. With an eye on an NBA future, Broome worked hard on his perimeter shooting during the offseason and his return earned Auburn a No. 11 preseason ranking.

“My main goal is a team goal, which is to win the national championship, to make it as far as I can in March Madness,” Broome said. “When a team shines, everyone shines individually.”

Like Sears, Davis has similar aspirations after opting to return for his fifth season at North Carolina.

The 6-foot guard was an AP All-American last season and the ACC player of the year after averaging 21.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists on a team that reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Davis enters this year within reach of former North Carolina big man Tyler Hansbrough's all-time ACC scoring record.

“I know there’s more work to be done,” Davis said. "I know my jersey’s not going up until I leave. So there’s some more records to break and some more work to be done. I’m satisfied but I’m not satisfied, if that makes sense.”

Up the road at Duke, Flagg was the only underclassman on the preseason All-America team after arriving with tons of hype. The 6-9 swingman was the No. 1-rated high school recruit out of Newport, Maine and has been projected as the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft.

Flagg has the skills of a guard, but can also play inside and has worked hard on his perimeter shooting, giving him the potential to be one of college basketball’s most versatile players. He’s part of a stellar recruiting class that has No. 7 Duke eyeing a deep March run.

Dickinson was the biggest move in the transfer portal last spring after leaving&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dickinson-kansas-michigan-f00c4df23a288b94f9b4397ac2bcdc44">Michigan for Kansas.</a>&nbsp;The 7-2 center lived up to the billing, averaging 17.9 points and 10.9 rebounds while leading the Jayhawks back to the NCAA Tournament.

With Dickinson's return and an influx of talented transfers, Kansas is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">ranked No. 1 going into the season</a>&nbsp;that begins Nov. 4.

Love's decision to return for a second season at No. 10 Arizona has ratcheted up expectations in the desert for the Big 12 rival of Kansas.

The athletic 6-4 guard had a high-scoring career at North Carolina and continued it after transferring to Arizona last season. He was the Pac-12 player of the year and a third-team All-American after averaging 18 points per game and making 92 3-pointers.

Love tested the NBA waters this summer before deciding to return.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes overcame two interceptions to deliver a few big plays with his feet and the Kansas City Chiefs remained the league's only undefeated team, beating the San Francisco 49ers 28-18 Sunday in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/49ers-chiefs-rematch-f22d71e88b568caf3792b782e48517e1">Super Bowl rematch</a>.

The stakes and the quality of play weren't at the same level as eight months ago when Mahomes and the Chiefs (6-0) beat the 49ers (3-4)&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2024-score-chiefs-49ers-49b5dca51c05ab0f259cef0d7da76c2d">25-22 in overtime</a>&nbsp;for their Super Bowl title in five seasons.

But the result was the same with Kansas City winning its fifth straight over San Francisco, including two Super Bowls.

The game came with a potentially heavy price for San Francisco with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/49ers-ricky-pearsall-return-7889bafdf22f93f7ae2620812c30f131">star receiver Brandon Aiyuk</a>&nbsp;getting carted off after getting hit on his right knee while making a catch late in the first half. There was no immediate word on the severity of the injury.

Aiyuk's absence proved crucial during a key point late in the third quarter when the 49ers were driving with a chance to erase a 14-12 deficit.

A miscommunication between backup receiver Ronnie Bell and Brock Purdy led to an interception by Chris Roland-Wallace. The Chiefs then turned that into a touchdown thanks in part to a 33-yard scramble by Mahomes that was his longest regular-season run ever.

Mahomes then scored on a 1-yard scramble on fourth-and-goal for his first rushing touchdown since the 2022 season.

That was one of four TD runs on the day for Kansas City, with Kareem Hunt getting two in the first half and Mecole Hardman icing it with an 18-yarder in the fourth quarter. It was just the second time Kansas City ran for four TDs in a game started by Mahomes, with the other coming in the 2018 divisional playoff round against Indianapolis.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Avery Johnson threw three touchdown passes, Marques Sigle returned an interception for a touchdown and No. 17 Kansas State beat West Virginia 45-18 on Saturday night.

The Wildcats (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) are off to their best start since 2014.

Kansas State's DJ Giddens scored on runs of 1 and 18 yards. The Big 12 rushing leader was held to a season-low 57 yards. But Johnson picked apart West Virginia’s injury-depleted secondary, finishing 19 of 29 for a career-high 298 yards.

Johnson slipped from the grasp of West Virginia defensive lineman Sean Martin and threw an 11-yard pass to Ty Bowman on fourth down to keep a third-quarter drive alive that ended with Johnson finding Garrett Oakley for a 16-yard score.

On Kansas State’s next series, Johnson and Giddens combined on a 53-yard pass play to the West Virginia 1, and Johnson hit tight end Will Anciaux in the end zone for a 31-10 lead, sending Mountaineer fans streaming for the exits.

West Virginia (3-4, 2-2) lost its third game at home and fell to a ranked opponent for the ninth consecutive time.

West Virginia’s Garrett Greene threw two interceptions that led to touchdowns for the second straight week. Sigle stepped in front of a pass and returned it 43 yards for a score to put the Wildcats ahead 17-3 early in the second quarter.

Greene finished 9 of 19 for 85 yards and one TD along with the two interceptions. The Big 12’s top rushing quarterback had 88 yards on the ground. But Greene, West Virginia running back Jahiem White and offensive lineman Wyatt Milum did not play in the second half. A press box announcement did not give a reason. West Virginia was limited to 63 total yards in the second half.

Backup quarterback Nicco Marchiol went 6 of 13 for 58 yards and a touchdown in Greene's absence.

Kansas State: The Wildcats adapted on offense after West Virginia shut down Giddens from the start. Johnson, who also had a 60-yard TD pass in the first quarter to Jadon Jackson in blown coverage, had eight completions of at least 15 yards.

West Virginia: The Mountaineers are 34-33 under sixth-year coach Neal Brown. That’s on pace to be the worst six-year stretch under one coach at West Virginia since Gene Corum went 29-30 from 1960-65.

Kansas State could move up a few spots in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">AP Top 25 poll</a>&nbsp;after the convincing win.

🏈 Avery Johnson throws for 3 TDs, K-State beats West Virginia

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jalon Daniels had three passing touchdowns, plus one on the ground, as Kansas broke a five-game losing streak with a 42-14 victory over Houston on Saturday at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

The game marked Kansas' 112th Homecoming, though it wasn't played in-state because of reconstruction of KU's home stadium.

“We were able to put pressure on the quarterback,” Kansas head coach Lance Leipold said of the difference between Saturday's game and the five previous games. “We were able to create a few turnovers and get some momentum.

"Offensively, we were able to take some shots and get the ball down the field.

"This team has been very fragile for a while, because we've been so close. For us to have a win of this margin is something we've been waiting for.”

Cobee Bryant tied a Kansas record, set by Bill Crank in 1958, with three interceptions.

“I was like, ‘Are you really throwing the ball to me?’,” Bryant said with a big smile on his face after the game. “He was just donating the ball to me.”

Daniels was 16-of-21 passing for 247 yards for Kansas (2-5, 1-3 Big 12).

“We probably played our best ball of the season, but I don't think we've played to our fullest potential,” Daniels said. “I still think there's a lot more to show.”

Donovan Smith went 15 of 24 through the air for 173 yards, with two touchdowns and three picks for Houston (2-5, 1-3 Big 12).

After a scoreless third quarter, Daniels' 8-yard touchdown put Kansas up 35-14 early in the fourth. Devin Neal scored his second touchdown for Kansas' final points.

Kansas scored touchdowns on its first four drives to assume control. The Jayhawks took the opening kickoff and marched on a 15-play drive that took nearly 9 minutes to take an early 7-0 lead. The Jayhawks converted a fourth-and-1 at the Houston 4-yard line before Daniels hit Jared Casey on a 2-yard touchdown pass.

“That nine-minute drive to start was about as good a start as we've had in a while,” Leipold said. “We were very methodical to start the game, especially after they deferred and gave us the football.”

On the first play following an interception by Bryant, Daniels hit Quentin Skinner with a 48-yard bomb to extend the lead.

“The Houston defense came out and tried to double team or triple team Luke Grimm a few times today,” Daniels said. “They were leaving a lot of one-on-ones with my other receivers. I'm always happy when one of my receivers gets to get out there and make a play.”

On its third drive, KU went 84 yards on six plays, capped by a 2-yard run by Neal.

Houston finally got on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter when Smith hit Stacy Sneed on a screen and Sneed ran untouched for a 23-yard score.

Daniels' third touchdown pass was a 3-yard strike to Casey to give Kansas a 28-7 lead. Smith hit Mekhi Mews on a 52-yard catch-and-run score right before halftime.

Houston: The Cougars' first-half defense let them down. They came into the game third in the Big 12 in total yards allowed per game at 295.0, and they gave up 284 of their 467 total yards allowed in the first half.

Kansas: The Jayhawks badly needed this victory to reach a third straight bowl game for the first time in program history. With games against No. 17 Kansas State, No. 9 Iowa State and No. 13 BYU in the next three games, they can afford just one more loss and achieve bowl eligibility.

Houston: The Cougars will host Utah Oct. 26.

PITTSBURG, Kan. – In a game they led most of the way, a late turnover led to a Pittsburg State touchdown with one minute to play and the 7th-ranked Gorillas rallied for an 18-17 win over Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon in front of 9,265 at Carnie Smith Stadium.

The Tigers (5-3, 3-3 MIAA) were up 17-12 and had the ball with a little under three minutes to play when a tipped pass was intercepted and gave the Gorillas the ball at the FHSU 21. Six plays later Pitt State (6-1, 5-1 NIAA) found the endzone on third and goal from the 5-yard line to take their first lead of the game. FHSU picked up one first down on their final possession before turning the ball over on downs with 18 seconds to play.

Fort Hays State scored the first points of the game when Shane Watts broke&nbsp;free on a 54-yard touchdown run down the PSU sideline at the 3:06 mark of the first quarter. The Gorillas would counter with second quarter field goals from 49 and 27 yards to pull within 7-6 at halftime.

The Tigers extended their lead to 14-6 with an 11-play, 80-yard drive capped with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Heavner to Jayden Horace on 4th and 11. The drive chewed up 6:36 on the clock and the touchdown came at the 3:45 mark of the third quarter. Pittsburg State responded with a 32-yard rushing touchdown on fourth down to pull within 14-12. Makel Williams knocked away a pass on the 2-point conversion to keep FHSU up two heading to the fourth quarter.

Fort Hays State put its final points on the board with 8:39 to play on a 29-yard Carson Arndt field goal.

The Tiger defense played well throughout the afternoon, stopping two potential scoring drives with a fumble recovery at the one early in teh game then an interception in the endzone by Kobe Rome in the third quarter.

The Tigers held the Gorillas to 377 yards of total offense, but only produced 288 against the MIAA's top defense. Heavner threw for 173 yards, while Watts rushed for 98. Watts went over 100 all-purpose yards for the seventh time in eight games this season. Makel Williams&nbsp;led the Tiger defense with 12 tackles.

The Tigers return to Hays for their final home game of the season next Saturday (Oct. 26). They host Missouri Southern at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day and the annual Hall of Fame Game.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State faced off against No. 18 ranked Southern Nazarene Saturday afternoon (Oct. 19) at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The match ended in a thrilling 1-1 draw after the Tigers scored with less than a minute to go in the match. The Tigers moved to 7-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in GAC play, while the Crimson Storm moved to 7-3-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the GAC.

The Tigers started strong with two close attempts on goal, but it was the Crimson Storm capitalizing first, scoring just 10 minutes into the match. Unaiz Shajani picked up an assist on Junior Duran's goal for SNU.

Despite the setback, FHSU responded with six more shots before SNU managed another. The Tigers dominated the first half with an 11-2 shot advantage, forcing SNU goalkeeper Andrej Krivokapic to make two saves. However, SNU led going to the second half.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the match, Junior Duran found himself in another one-on-one situation with Tiger goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/wouter-van-der-borch/8367">Wouter Van der Borch</a>. This time, Van der Borch made a crucial save, stretching his left leg to deny Duran and keep the deficit at just 1-0.
