🎧 Chiefs Training Camp Reports with Mitch Holthus

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team heads into the 2025 season ranked eighth in this year's MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, announced Friday (Aug. 22) by the league office.

The Tigers accumulated 45 points in the balloting process, two in front of ninth-ranked Pittsburg State. FHSU finished eighth in the MIAA's KPI standings last season at 12-14 overall, earning the final spot in the 2024 MIAA Championship Tournament.

Nebraska-Kearney, last year's regular season champions, are listed first with nine first-place votes and 119 points overall, with 2024 tournament champion Central Oklahoma slotted second with the remaining three first-place votes and 111 total points.

Head coach Jessica Wood-Atkins enters her eighth year at Fort Hays State with a veteran roster that includes 14 returners and five newcomers. The squad is made up of five seniors, two juniors, eight sophomores and four freshmen.

The Tigers return a pair of All-MIAA performers in two-time selection Gracie Rains, who earned second team status last year at outside hitter, and setter Caiya Stucky Reyes, who was an honorable mention pick in 2024.

Fort Hays State will open the season at home on Friday, September 5 when they host the first of two weekend tournaments. FHSU will play a pair of matches on September 5 and 6 and again on September 11 and 12 before opening league play at home on Friday, September 26 against Missouri Southern. The Tigers will play a total of 17 matches at home in 2025.

                    </figure><p><i>FHSU Athletics</i></p><p>KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team heads into the 2025 season ranked eighth in this year's MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, announced Friday (Aug. 22) by the league office.</p><p>The Tigers accumulated 45 points in the balloting process, two in front of ninth-ranked Pittsburg State. FHSU finished eighth in the MIAA's KPI standings last season at 12-14 overall, earning the final spot in the 2024 MIAA Championship Tournament.</p><p>Nebraska-Kearney, last year's regular season champions, are listed first with nine first-place votes and 119 points overall, with 2024 tournament champion Central Oklahoma slotted second with the remaining three first-place votes and 111 total points.</p><p>Head coach Jessica Wood-Atkins enters her eighth year at Fort Hays State with a veteran roster that includes 14 returners and five newcomers. The squad is made up of five seniors, two juniors, eight sophomores and four freshmen.</p><p>The Tigers return a pair of All-MIAA performers in two-time selection Gracie Rains, who earned second team status last year at outside hitter, and setter Caiya Stucky Reyes, who was an honorable mention pick in 2024.</p><p>Fort Hays State will open the season at home on Friday, September 5 when they host the first of two weekend tournaments. FHSU will play a pair of matches on September 5 and 6 and again on September 11 and 12 before opening league play at home on Friday, September 26 against Missouri Southern. Nick Loftin also homered for the Royals, who boosted their playoff hopes by going 8-2 on a season-high 10-game homestand.

Michael Lorenzen failed to make it through five innings for Kansas City, but Angel Zerpa (5-1), Daniel Lynch IV, John Schreiber and Taylor Clarke were able to shut down the Rangers. Carlos Estévez handled the ninth for his AL-leading 33rd save.

Corey Seager had three hits and Josh Smith drove in a pair of runs for Texas. Jacob Webb (4-4) served up Pasquantino's homer.

The Royals pulled ahead 2-1 in the third, when Bobby Witt Jr. sent a fly ball to left-center that Rangers outfielder Wyatt Langford lost in the sun. The ball bounced off the warning track, then off the top of the wall, and that gave the speedy Witt enough time to round the bases for what appeared to be an inside-the-park homer.

The umpires huddled and decided to call it a ground-rule double, because a fan appeared to have touched the ball. The Royals challenged the call and it was upheld, only for Salvador Perez to drive in Witt with a single moments later.

Kansas City added two more in the fourth before the Rangers tied the game with three runs in the fifth.

That set the stage for Pasquantino, whose four-game homer streak is one shy of the Royals club record.

Pasquantino greeted Webb's 2-1 pitch by sending it 407 feet to right field.

The Rangers' Patrick Corbin allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings. He has allowed 17 over 13 innings covering his last four starts.

Texas returns home to face Cleveland on Friday night with RHP Nathan Eovaldi (11-3, 1.76 ERA) up first.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a deal to acquire receiver Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday.

A person familiar with the trade said the teams will swap sixth- and seventh-round picks in 2027 in the deal that sends Moore to San Francisco. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade can't be finalized until Moore passes a physical.

Moore was drafted by Kansas City in the second round in 2022 but hasn't produced much in his first three seasons. He had 43 catches for 494 yards and one TD in 36 games. He didn't catch a single pass last season because of a a core muscle injury.

Moore did catch a TD pass in the fourth quarter of Kansas City's 38-35 win in the Super Bowl against Philadelphia following the 2022 season.

Moore had an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of a preseason game last Friday at Seattle. The 49ers have gone 227 consecutive regular-season games without a punt return touchdown for the second longest active drought in the NFL.

The Niners were in dire need of healthy receivers. Brandon Aiyuk is working his way back from major knee surgery and isn't expected to be able to play until at least Week 6, while fellow starter Jauan Jennings has been out for most of training camp with a calf injury.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday on his radio show that Demarcus Robinson is facing a three-game suspension, pending appeal, after pleading no contest last month to a misdemeanor DUI charge.

Rookie Jordan Watkins is out with a high ankle sprain and second-year pro Jacob Cowing is nursing a hamstring injury. Cowing hurt his hamstring the first day of training camp and returned to practice last week. Cowing tweaked the injury on Tuesday and missed practice Wednesday.

HAYS - The 2024 football season for Hays High ended with the program's first ever appearance in the state championship game. The loss in that finale did nothing to damper the expectations looking forward. Head coach Tony Crough knows the experience will pay off for his team. "I don't know that our kids feel a whole lot different about it. That doesn't mean you get to go in and make it back to the state championship game every year. But, it just feels like they are lot more settled in with what it looked like and how to operate."

Crough (45-28) enters his eighth year at the helm.&nbsp;

Mother Nature decided day number one of the football season would end with a cancelled practice. The following morning at 6:00 a.m. the team held their first practice on the turf at the brand new high school.

106 players donned helmets for a Indian team that returns most of the pieces from the prior year's running game. "With that offensive line coming back, that's always the staple of a good offense. Of course we are really talented in the backfield with Holden (Lind) and bringing in some new guys. But, being stable up front, having those guys that know what to do...it looks natural, looks normal, and they look comfortable."

Much of the focus on the offensive line lands on sophomore Gus Corsair. He landed a number of Power Five offers during the offseason.

The Indians traveled to Arvada, Colorado last year to face the Wheatridge Farmers. Wheatridge won't be making the return trip which left Hays High in search of a new opponent for week two of the season and the first varsity football game held at the new Hays High School. That opponent will be Choctaw, Oklahoma. The Yellowjackets are the 6A-II defending state champions, winning their last ten games in 2024.

The Indians' first eight opponents went a combined 63-24 last season. Only one of the schools had a final record under .500.&nbsp;They will travel to Derby to open the season with the Panthers on September 5th.

🏈 Hays High returns with heightened expectations

HAYS, Kan. - Meet the 2025 Fort Hays State Football team on Friday, August 22 at Big Creek Crossing in Hays. Coaches and players will be signing autographs and giving out 2025 schedule posters from 5 to 7 p.m.

Posters and sharpies for autographs will be provided. Members of the FHSU Cheer Squad and Victor E. Tiger will also be at the event. Fans can also bring their own Tiger gear to be signed.

The Tigers open the season on Thursday, August 28 hosting a matchup of ranked teams. The Tigers are ranked No. 20 in the D2Football.com Top 25, while the Rams are ranked No. 12. This is the second-straight year the Tigers host Angelo State to open the season and won 21-7 over a No. 24 ranked Rams team last year. Overall, Fort Hays State will be at home five times during its 11-game regular season schedule.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino homered in the first inning and then scored the go-ahead run in the seventh when Jonathan India was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, helping the Kansas City Royals to a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night.

Bobby Witt Jr. added a two-run shot in the eighth for his 100th career homer, and Mike Yastrzemski went deep for the Royals, who have won five straight and improved to 7-1 on their season-high 10-game homestand.

Rangers reliever Hoby Milner (1-3) allowed three consecutive hits to start the seventh, including Pasquantino's double. Cole Winn then entered the game and hit India with his first pitch, giving Kansas City its first lead of the game.

Angel Zerpa (4-1) got five outs for the Royals before John Schreiber took care of the ninth for his first save.

Royals starter Seth Lugo and Rangers counterpart Merrill Kelly had matched each other pitch-for-pitch for most of the night.

Lugo surrendered a homer to Corey Seager with two outs in the first, then allowed one more hit before Joc Pederson’s homer in the fourth. Those were the only three hits that Lugo allowed, and he walked two while striking out five.

Kelly gave up the homer to Pasquantino, which just scraped over the right-field wall, with two outs in the first. He did not allow another hit until Yastrzemski's shot into the right-field bullpen with two outs in the sixth.

Those were the only two hits Kelly allowed over six innings. He struck out three without a walk.

Jonah Heim led off the eighth for Texas with a single, but Zerpa got pinch-hitter Cody Freeman to ground into a double play.

Kansas City is 5-0 against the Rangers this season.

The Rangers have not announced their starter for Wednesday after disclosing pregame that RHP Jacob deGrom would skip a turn due to shoulder fatigue. LHP Noah Cameron (7-5, 2.47 ERA) is due on the mound for Kansas City.

Michael Wacha (8-9) allowed two runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings for the win. He struck out three, walked none and permitted two earned runs or fewer for the seventh straight start.

Carlos Estévez set a career high with his American League-leading 32nd save.

Yastrzemski's shot to right-center was the 10th leadoff homer of his career and third with the Royals, matching a franchise record for any month. Kansas City acquired Yastrzemski from San Francisco at the July 31 trade deadline.

Pasquantino hit a two-run drive over the right-field wall to give the Royals a 3-1 lead in the third. Bobby Witt Jr. was aboard on a leadoff walk.

Garcia's homer in the fifth went over the left-field wall, just inside the foul pole. Kansas City has homered in eight consecutive games, tying a season high.

The Rangers scored on RBI singles by Jonah Heim in the second and Evan Carter in the sixth. Rowdy Tellez had an RBI groundout in the eighth.

Jack Leiter (7-7) gave up three runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked three.

Royals catcher Luke Maile tagged out Joc Pederson at home plate as part of a double play off a throw from right fielder John Rave. The Rangers challenged the call and lost, keeping the score tied 1-all in the second inning.

Texas went 2 for 8 with runners in scoring position and finished with 11 hits — 10 singles.

The teams play the second game of their series Tuesday night. Texas will start Merrill Kelly (9-7, 3.36 ERA) against Seth Lugo (8-6, 3.77).

⚾ Royals hit three home runs in win over Rangers

HAYS - The TMP-Marian Monarchs football team opened year number
three under head coach Grant Stephenson on Monday afternoon.

The threat of severe weather in the Hays area forced the
Monarchs inside for the first practice of the season.

“We got some good mental reps in and things that needed to
be taught,” Stephenson said. “It was great to see the new assistants jump out
and be so eager to help out.”

New to the staff this year are former Kansas State offensive
linemen Hayden Gillum, Hayden Friend and Drew Labertew. 

Gillium and Friend played for Stephenson at Plainville High
School. Labertew is entering his second season as Activities Director at TMP.

Stephenson said the 33 players who took part in Monday’s practice
are the most in his three years as Monarchs’ head coach.

“Numbers are growing. That's another positive,” Stephenson
said. “And, we can just hopefully get all on the same page and make something
happen this year.”

The Monarchs open the season on Thursday, Sept. 4, at home against
the Russell Broncos. 

Stephenson said the first two weeks are all about making
sure that kids understand what is being asked of them.

“If we can understand our jobs, understand the details and
execute things properly going into that game one, then I'll be super proud of
our guys,” Stephenson said. “But that also falls on us; we have got to be able
to coach and teach him everything leading up to that.”

TMP will host a jamboree with Plainville and Larned on Aug.
29 at Lewis Field.

🏈 Numbers on the rise for Monarchs and third year head coach Grant Stephenson 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs placed defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah on injured reserve Monday, ending the season for the 2023 first-round pick, who has struggled to live up to expectations following a standout career at Kansas State.

The Chiefs also waived running back Elijah Young and signed defensive end Owen Carney and linebacker Xander Mueller.

Anudike-Uzomah came out of high school in the Kansas City suburb of Lee's Summit, Missouri, and he was a popular pick when the Chiefs selected him 32nd overall in a draft they hosted in 2023. But he has just three sacks and eight tackles for loss over 34 games his first two seasons in the league, and now he will miss the upcoming season altogether.

“That's a tough thing,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “I mean, he's worked hard. We'll see where it goes. I can't tell you how long it's going to be. It's disappointing for him because he's worked so stinking hard.”

Anudike-Uzomah had been buried on the depth chart behind starting defensive ends George Karlaftis and Mike Danna, veteran pass rusher Charles Omenihu and Ashton Gillotte, a third-round pick out of Louisville in April's draft.

The Chiefs returned to their practice facility Monday following a preseason loss in Seattle last Friday night.

Among those missing the workout were defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott (ankle), defensive backs Mike Edwards (hamstring) and Nazeeh Johnson (shoulder), linebacker Jack Cochrane (knee) and wide receiver Jalen Royals (knee).

In a bit of positive injury news, Marquise Brown returned to the field Monday after dealing with an ankle that has sidelined him for much of training camp. Brown has sat out both of the Chiefs' preseason games, and Reid declined to say whether he would be on the field for their final exhibition game against the Bears on Friday night.

Kansas City opens the regular season against the Chargers on Sept. 5 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

“Hollywood (Brown) did a little work yesterday, which was good. He'll get a little more today and then we'll see,” Reid said. “We'll see how he progresses through this thing. But it's not a matter of wanting to be out there. He wants to do it. We're just taking it slow. We don't want any setbacks with this going forward here.”

Fort Hays State was tabbed No. 20 in the D2Football.com Top 25 Poll released on Sunday (Aug. 17). It is the third time the Tigers will start the season in the Top 25 of the D2Football.com Top 25 Poll, the last being in 2019 when they were ranked No. 8 in the nation to start the year.

The Tigers will open their season with a Top 25 matchup in regards to the D2Football.com Top 25 Poll. The No. 20 Tigers play host to No. 12 ranked Angelo State on the evening of Thursday, August 28 in Hays. Angelo State is ranked in both preseason top 25 polls, holding the No. 13 spot in the AFCA poll. FHSU received the fourth-most votes among teams outside of the top 25 in the AFCA poll. Both FHSU and ASU went 8-3 overall last year.

The Tigers are among four MIAA teams ranked in the D2Football.com Preseason Top 25 Poll, joining No. 3 Central Oklahoma, No. 10 Pittsburg State, and No. 24 Central Missouri.

Fort Hays State was ranked No. 19 in the final regular season D2Football.com Poll last year, but with falling short of the playoffs, they were left out of the final top 25 released by D2Football.com last year. 🏈 Tigers tabbed No. 20 in D2Football.com preseason top 25 poll

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The construction cranes that have been working on a new stadium for the Kansas Jayhawks the past two years might just as well be emblematic of the program as a whole.

No longer a downtrodden eyesore, the Jayhawks are suddenly competitive again, even if they remain a work in progress.

The vast majority of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium has been finished, including the east side and end zones, though the west side stands from the old facility will remain until the next offseason. In much the same way, the Jayhawks have become Big 12 contenders under Lance Leipold, though they showed during a 5-7 finish last year that they are still building.

“As we come into this stadium,” Leipold said ahead of Saturday night’s opener against Fresno State, “we need our fanbase to be there as well, to truly make it impactful. We need people there to do it.

“Now, on the flip side, it’s our responsibility to play a brand — a style — of effective football that people want to come and see,” Leipold continued, “and create a game-day environment that is special, that people want to partake in.”

After back-to-back bowl games, and going 9-4 two years ago, Kansas slid a bit last year, a season of high expectations that was sullied by a spectacularly poor start. The Jayhawks lost five of their first six games while playing home games at Children’s Mercy Park, the home of MLS club Sporting Kansas City, and Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Chiefs — which is just across the state line in Missouri, adding to the homeless feeling Kansas no doubt felt.

But the Jayhawks finished with a flurry, beating ranked foes Iowa State, Colorado and BYU in consecutive weeks. And while they failed to make a bowl game, they have not only confidence but momentum as they head into a new season.

“This program is now relevant,” Leipold said.

The Jayhawks have a stadium to reflect it, too.

Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels has been labeled a Heisman Trophy candidate and a bust, a spectacular athlete who is capable of doing just about anything and an injury-prone QB who struggles with his decision-making. The reality is probably somewhere in between, but one thing is certain: If Daniels has a big final season in Lawrence, so will the Jayhawks.

Daniel Hishaw Jr. is first in line to replace Devin Neal, the school’s departed career rushing record-holder, but he has dealt with injuries throughout his career. Iowa transfer Leshon Williams, who only played three games last season because of his own injury troubles, will also get plenty of reps in the backfield.

One of the big unknowns in Lawrence is who will replace the top four wide receivers from last year. Alabama transfer Emmanuel Henderson Jr. and Albany transfer Levi Wentz have gotten rave reviews from Kansas wide receivers coach Terrence Samuel, while Columbia transfer Bryson Canty and Ball State transfer Cam Pickett could start games as well.

Jim Zebrowski was promoted to offensive coordinator after Jeff Grimes left for the same job at Wisconsin, while D.K. McDonald has taken over the defense following the retirement of longtime coordinator Brian Borland.

After opening with Fresno State and Wagner, the Jayhawks head to Missouri for a matchup with their most bitter rival. If they get through those three games, their first two Big 12 games against West Virginia and Cincinnati are at home. There are road trips to Texas Tech and Iowa State on the schedule but the Jayhawks host rival Kansas State on Oct. 25.

🏈 KU's new stadium symbolizes program’s resurgence, though work on both still remains

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State fans placed quarterback Avery Johnson on a pedestal before he arrived on campus. He was the top recruit who decided to stay home and play for the in-state school, and he was expected to lead the Wildcats to Big 12 greatness.

There were games last year in which he did exactly that. There also were games in which he fell right off that pedestal.

The question now, as the No. 17 Wildcats prepare to open the season against No. 22 Iowa State on Saturday in Dublin, Ireland, is whether the junior QB can play consistently at an elite level. Whether coach Chris Klieman wants to acknowledge it or not, the chances of Kansas State playing for a conference title this season rest largely on Johnson's shoulders.

“He's doing a really good job of holding other people accountable. Holding himself accountable,” Klieman said. “He's saying, ‘I’ve got to continue to improve that relationship with these wideouts, or other tight ends or running backs.' He's never satisfied, and that is something that I really appreciate about Avery.”

To be clear: Johnson had an excellent first season as a starter. He threw for 2,712 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, and he ran for another 605 yards and seven scores. And he led the Wildcats to a 9-4 finish, which included a bowl win over Rutgers — the fourth straight season Kansas State has finished with at least eight wins.

Yet among those losses was a 38-9 rout at BYU in which he threw a pair of picks, a loss to Houston in which he threw two more, and a late-season loss to the Cyclones that allowed them — rather than Kansas State — to play for a Big 12 championship.

The experience that Johnson gained from those setbacks has proven to be invaluable, though.

“I think he's probably more comfortable in his own skin, in his own ability,” Kansas State offensive coordinator Matt Wells said. “'I don't have to be this certain type of player. I don't need to listen to the media or somebody ask me about being a certain prototypical blank-kind of quarterback. I'm good when I run. I'm good when I throw it.' I think he's further along in coverage recognition. I think he's further along in his ability to dissect what a defense is doing. That takes time.”

The time has come to put it to the test. The Wildcats open against Iowa State in a Top 25 showdown in Ireland that could play a big factor in deciding who plays for the Big 12 title come the end of the season.

Kansas State lost running back D.J. Giddens to the NFL, but Dylan Edwards is back, and he showed last season the kind of game-breaking speed and ability that made him a four-star recruit. He had 224 yards total and three touchdowns in the Rate Bowl.

Jayce Brown is back after catching 47 passes for 823 yards and five touchdowns, but the Wildcats seldom got production from the rest of their wide receivers last year. Purdue transfer Jaron Tibbs and Boston College transfer Jerand Bradley should help.

The school that produced second-round draft pick Ben Sinnott two years keeps churning out tight ends. Garrett Oakley, Will Swanson and Will Anciaux combined to catch 11 TD passes last season, and now they will be joined by Linkon Cure, who many recruiting services labeled the best tight end in this year's recruiting class.

Austin Romaine was largely overlooked coming out of high school, but the middle linebacker has emerged as one of the best in the nation. He was second-team All-Big 12 last year and is on the watch list for the Butkus and Nagurski awards this year.

The first four weeks of the season will set the tone for Kansas State. After playing in Ireland, the Wildcats return home to face North Dakota, then face the tricky triple-option of Army. After a short week comes a Friday night trip to Arizona on Sept. 12. Trips to Baylor and Kansas await but the Wildcats get TCU, Texas Tech and Colorado at home.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jonathan India and Adam Frazier hit two-run homers, rallying the Kansas City Royals to a 6-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday for a series sweep.

The White Sox led 2-0 before India tied it in the seventh with his 451-foot shot, tying his longest.

Run-scoring singles by Maikel Garcia and Salvador Perez gave the Royals a 4-2 lead in the eighth before Frazier's fifth homer of the season made it 6-2.

White Sox starter Davis Martin allowed one hit in seven innings before Steven Wilson, Grant Taylor (0-3) and Jordan Leasure yielded six runs and seven hits in two innings.

Lenyn Sosa hit his 16th home run of the season with one out in the first and Andrew Benintendi scored on Edgar Quero's RBI single in the sixth to make it 2-0.

Lucas Erceg (5-3), the fourth Kansas City pitcher, earned the win with one scoreless inning.

Taylor pitched one inning and gave up three hits and three runs, including Frazier's homer.

The Royals have won 14 straight at home against the White Sox, tying a franchise record for most wins against one opponent at home.

The White Sox will head to Atlanta to play the Braves on Monday night. Yoendrys Gomez (2-1, 5.56 ERA) will start for Chicago and Spencer Strider (5-10, 4.69 ERA) will start for Atlanta. The Royals will host the Texas Rangers on Monday night. Kansas City will start Michael Wacha (7-9, 3.35 ERA). Texas will start Jack Leiter (7-6, 3.94 ERA)
