The Kansas City Chiefs are finalizing a trade to acquire quarterback Justin Fields from the New York Jets, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, with the deal pending a physical.

Kansas City is expected to send a 2027 sixth-round draft pick to New York in exchange for Fields, Schefter reported. Multiple teams reportedly had interest in the 27-year-old quarterback, but Fields preferred a move to the Chiefs.

Fields is expected to back up Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. Mahomes is returning from a torn ACL, while last season’s backup, Gardner Minshew, left in free agency to sign with the Arizona Cardinals.

The Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract last offseason, but his lone season in New York was uneven. He appeared in nine games in 2025, throwing for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception while completing 62.7% of his passes. He also remained a threat on the ground, rushing for 383 yards and four touchdowns.

Over five NFL seasons with Chicago, Pittsburgh and New York, Fields has thrown for 9,039 yards with 52 touchdown passes and 32 interceptions. He has also been one of the league’s most dangerous running quarterbacks, totaling 2,892 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns in 59 career games.
