GARDEN CITY - Hays High softball saw their 6-game win streak come to an end Tuesday as they are swept by Garden City 15-5 and 10-7. The Indians never have the lead in the first game then blow a six-run lead in game two.
Hays is now 6-4 overall 4-2 in the Western Athletics Conference. They will be Dodge City for a tournament beginning Friday.
Game 1: Garden City 15, Hays 5 (5 innings)
Graden City scored multiple runs in every inning and never trailed. The Buffs plated two in the the first then added four in the second for a 6-0 lead. After the Indians scored two in the top of the third, Garden City answered with a five run third and fourth run fourth. The Indians would tack on three in the top of the fifth.
Jaylee Summers drove in all five runs for Hays on two hits. She had a 2-run single in the third then added a bases-loaded double which scored three in the fifth.
Summers went the distance and took the loss for Hays in the circle, giving up 15 runs (14 earned) on 13 hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Game 2: Garden City 10, Hays 7
The Indians led 6-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth but Garden City scored nine to rally for the sweep.
Hays scored five in the second. Adelynn Wilke drove in the first run on a groundout, Brynlee Rupp had an RBI double, Jaylee Summers a run scoring single and Avery Raymer drove in two with a double.
The Indians would add another run in the fifth on an Adalie Kippes base hit, but the Buffs would get nine in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. They hit two home runs in the frame along with seven singles, two walks and an error.
Raymer had three hits and drove in three but also took the loss in the circle after allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and five walks over 4 1/3 innings.
