

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team wraps up the regular season with a pair of road games this weekend, beginning with a Thursday evening contest at Central Oklahoma. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Hamilton Field House in Edmond, Okla.

The Tigers (20-6, 11-6 MIAA) and Bronchos&nbsp;(17-8, 11-6 MIAA) are locked in a tie for sixth in the MIAA standings with two games to go. The Tigers can mathematically finish as high as third and as low as eighth when the dust settles on the regular season Saturday evening.

FHSU is looking to avenge a 77-66 loss to the Bronchos two weeks ago in Hays (2/8/20, UCO's first-ever win inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers clinched the regular season conference championship last year in Edmond with a 70-48 win (2/21/19, making the road team 2-0 in the last two games of the series.

Fort Hays State is 11-5 all-time against Central Oklahoma, including a 3-4 record in Edmond. The Tigers are 10-4 against UCO under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=884">Tony Hobson</a>&nbsp;and 3-3 on the road.

The Tigers are averaging 76.7 points per game this season, with four players averaging in double figures.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5442">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;leads the team with 12.1 points per contest while dishing out 4.7 assists each night, third-most in the MIAA. The Alva, Okla. junior has scored in double figures in eight-straight games, tied with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5438">Taylor Rolfs</a>&nbsp;for the longest streak for a Tiger this season.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5434">Kacey Kennett</a>&nbsp;adds 12.0 points per night, including a team-high three 20-point performances. The senior guard has scored in double figures 61 times in her four-year career, scoring 10 or more points in just under half of her appearances (61-of-123).

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5430">Belle Barbieri</a>&nbsp;tacks on 10.8 points and a team-best 8.8 rebounds per contest, second-most in the MIAA. The Abilene, Kan. senior has nine double-doubles to her name on the year, tied for the most in the league.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5438">Taylor Rolfs</a>&nbsp;is averaging 10.3 points each game while adding 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per night. The Claflin, Kan. native currently ranks ninth in program history with 125 made 3-pointers, including 33 long-range makes this season.

Central Oklahoma is coming off an eight-point home loss to Emporia State (74-66, its third loss over the last five games. The Bronchos rank fifth in the league in scoring, putting up 75.7 points per night, while allowing 65.2 points per game. They force 20.5 turnovers each contest, second-most in the MIAA, while ranking 25th in the country with a +5.1 turnover margin. UCO is 8-4 at home this season. Junior Kelsey Johnson leads the Bronchos with 13.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. She knocks down 60.2 percent of her shots, tops in the conference and the ninth-best shooting percentage in Division II.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team maintained its ranking of eighth in the updated NCAA Division II Central Region rankings, released Wednesday.

The Tigers (20-6, 11-6 MIAA) have an overall Division II record of 17-6 and an in-region record of 16-6.&nbsp;FHSU has three wins over regionally ranked opponents this season, topping No. 2 Minnesota Duluth in the first game of the year before defeating both No. 9 Harding and No. 4 Emporia State by more than 30 points.

A pair of home wins last week helped the Tigers hang on to the No. 8 ranking. Multiple teams above the Tigers lost last week, but two road wins from Southwestern Oklahoma State helped the Bulldogs leap from ninth to seventh.

Four&nbsp;MIAA teams are listed in the regional top 10 this week, with FHSU joined by top-ranked Central Missouri, fourth-ranked Emporia State and No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney. The NSIC and GAC each have three teams represented this week.

The regional ranking committee will announce one more regular season poll before the final&nbsp;announcement is made on Selection Sunday, when the NCAA announces the 64-team field for the 2020 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship at 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 8. The three conference tournament champions from the MIAA, GAC and NSIC will be joined by top five remaining teams in an eight-team regional tournament beginning Friday, March 13.

Fort Hays State wrap up the regular season on the road this week against Central Oklahoma and Newman before heading to Kansas City, Mo. for the 2020 MIAA Women's Basketball Championship.

Tiger women hold on to eighth in Central Regional rankings

Both the TMP-Marian boys and girls basketball teams will
host first round sub-state games next week.

The TMP boys earned the number three seed in the 3A boys
Beloit sub-state next week with a record of 15-4. TMP will host the six-seed
Phillipsburg on Monday at 7 p.m. Phillipsburg is 12-9 on the year.

The winner of that game will take on the winner of the
number two seed Hoisington and the seven-seed Concordia.

On the other side of the bracket, the host Beloit is the top
seed. They will host Russell on Monday. The winner of that matchup gets the
winner of the four versus five match up of Minneapolis and Norton.

The TMP girls earned the four-seed in the Beloit sub-state
and will host the number five-seed Russell Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The winner of the game will take on the winner of the top
seed Phillipsburg and the eight-seed Concordia.

TMP set to host 1st round sub-state games

The TMP girls and boys basketball teams closed out the
Mid-Continent League portion of their schedule Tuesday night with a doubleheader
sweep of the Plainville Cardinals in Plainville.

Girls: TMP 67, Plainville 55 The TMP girls used a 12-0 run to end the first quarter and
outscored Plainville 11-4 in the second quarter as they rallied from a
nine-point first quarter deficit to beat the Cardinals 67-55.

Coach Rose McFarland postgame interview

The two teams traded field goals back and forth in a
high-scoring first quarter and Plainville’s Aubrey Dewey scored 16 of her game-high
43 points to give the Cardinals a 20-11 lead. Down nine TMP answered with a 12-0
run to end the first quarter, capped off with five straight points from Jaci
VonLintel that gave TMP a 23-20 lead at the end of the first quarter.

TMP carried that run into the second quarter and extended it
to a 23-4 run giving the Monarchs a 34-24 lead at the break.

The Monarchs held an eight point on several occasions in the
third quarter and Plainville could get no closer as the Monarchs claimed the
67-55 win.

Megan Hamel scored a team-high for TMP with 15 points.&nbsp;

TMP improved to 8-12 overall and 4-5 in the MCL.

Boys: TMP 65, Plainville 47 After falling behind by one in the first quarter the TMP
boys ended the first quarter and closed out the second quarter on a 17-7 run
and never trailed again on their way to the 65-47 win and their first
Mid-Continent League regular season title since 2017.

Jared Casey gave Plainville at 14-13 lead in the first
quarter but a fastbreak layup for TMP’s Lucas Lang gave the Monarchs the lead
back and sparked the 17-7 first half run that put TMP up 30-21 at the break.

In the third quarter Plainville was able to cut the deficit
back to two points but TMP turned to their senior post player Carson Jacobs to
lead them to the win. Jacobs scored 24 of his game and career-high 29 points in
the second half helping TMP build a double-digit lead in the second half as
they earned the 65-47 win.

Plainville's Jared Casey finished with 24.&nbsp;

TMP improved to 15-4 and finished 8-1 in the MCL.

TMP will close out the regular season Thursday at Hutch Trinity.

The Bears were coming off a three-point home loss to Kansas that ended their Big 12-record 23-game winning streak. They had a 34-point lead with four minutes to go against the Wildcats. They didn't make another field goal after that with the starters on the bench. 

Cartier Diarra had 19 points to lead K-State. The Wildcats are 0-8 in February and host No. 1 Kansas on Saturday.&nbsp;

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team came up on the losing end of an 11-4 rain-soaked contest Sunday against CSU-Pueblo. The game was called after eight innings due to the increasingly soggy conditions.

The Tigers (10-6) seemed to be in control early, taking the lead in the first inning on offense while starter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5283">Jacob Ensz</a>&nbsp;struck out six batters over the first three frames. But the ThunderWolves&nbsp;(6-4) got things rolling in the fourth inning, plating five runs before adding to its lead with three runs in the fifth and three more in the eighth.

After Ensz struck out two in the top of the first,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5289">Grant Schmidt</a>&nbsp;started a two-out rally when he pulled a double to left.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5298">Corbin Truslow</a>&nbsp;followed with a double of his own into the right-center gap, driving in the first run of the game.

HAYS, Kan. – It was a Senior Day to remember for the Fort
Hays State Tigers who turned a 16-point first half deficit into an 87-80 win
over Northeastern State to keep their MIAA Tournament hopes alive. The Tigers
bounce back after back-to-back losses and have won six of their last eight and
are currently tied with Central Oklahoma for the final two spots in next month’s
conference tournament.

After a back-and-forth first six minutes the RiverHawks (17-10,

Furious second half run lifts Tigers past Northeastern State



HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against CSU-Pueblo Saturday. The bats fell silent in game one, with FHSU collecting just three hits before pushing across two runs on six hits in game two.

The Tigers (10-5) and ThunderWolves (5-4) will wrap up the series on Sunday with the weekend finale beginning at noon at Larks Park.

Game One: CSU-Pueblo 4, Fort Hays State 0 Fort Hays State struggled to get going offensively as they could only muster three hits on singles from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5291">Garrett Stephens</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5266">Jared Maneth</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5276">Griffin Brunson</a>. CSU-Pueblo's starting pitcher Brett Matthews did not allow a runner past second, striking out 12 batters over six scoreless innings.

The ThunderWolves&nbsp;broke through with its first two runs of the weekend in the third inning before adding insurance runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

Game Two: CSU-Pueblo 6, Fort Hays State 2 The ThunderWolves struck first again in game two with a third-inning home run from Ty Lewis. CSU-Pueblo later built its lead to 6-0 before the Tigers started to battle back in the sixth.

Fort Hays State got on the board in the bottom of the sixth after singles from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5276">Griffin Brunson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5298">Corbin Truslow</a>. A walk to&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5293">Jaxson Webb</a>&nbsp;later in the inning loaded the bases with two outs for&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5267">Tyler Olson</a>, who took a pitch to the back to score a run. Pueblo escaped the inning without any further damage after a strikeout retired the side.

The Tigers made things interesting with a two-out rally in the seventh inning, but FHSU left the tying run in the on-deck circle. points but had six turnovers and only one assist. Kacey Kennett scored 12
despite going 1-for-5 from beyond the arc. Whitney Randall came off the bench
to add 11.

It was the final home game for the senior class of Belle
Barbieri, Kyleigh Kasper, Kacey Kennett, Lanie Page and Taylor Rolfs, a group

The Tigers will recognize their senior class with a special ceremony before the opening tip. This year's senior class includes&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5430">Belle Barbieri</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5433">Kyleigh Kasper</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5434">Kacey Kennett</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5436">Lanie Page</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5438">Taylor Rolfs</a>. These seniors have helped the Tigers to 99 wins over the last four years and can become just the second class in program history to win 100 games at FHSU with a win Saturday. They have earned a combined five All-MIAA honors and have appeared on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll 13 times.

Fort Hays State has dominated the all-time series with NSU, winning 14 of the 17 contests and 13 straight. The Tigers have never lost to Northeastern State in Hays, winning all six home games against the RiverHawks. The last RiverHawk victory in the series came midway through the 2013-14 season, more than six years ago (1/18/14, 49-48 in Tahlequah). FHSU is 14-2 overall and 6-0 at home against NSU under Hobson.

A win Saturday would give the Tigers 20 wins for the ninth year in a row. Fort Hays State had eight 20-win seasons in the first 42 years of the program before the current streak began in the 2011-12 season.

While the Tigers have secured a trip to Kansas City for the 2020 MIAA Championship, a lot is still up for grabs in the final league standings. FHSU can finish anywhere from third through eighth with three games to go. The teams seeded third through sixth in the tournament will open play with the quarterfinals on Friday, March 6, while the seven through 10 seeds have to play in the opening round on Wednesday, March 4. Barbieri led the Tigers with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting in a road win over the RiverHawks last month (77-66, 1/9/20).&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5442">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;added 17 points and six assists while Rolfs scored 16 after hitting four 3-pointers.

After turning the ball over just nine times in Thursday's 100-59 win over Rogers State, the Tigers lowered their season average to 11.2 turnovers per game, fewest in the MIAA and third-fewest in the country.

Northeastern State is searching for its first win outside Tahlequah this season, entering the weekend 0-10 in road or neutral contests. The RiverHawks rank 13th in the MIAA in scoring offense, averaging 59.4 points per game, while ranking 12th with 68.7 points allowed per contest. NSU hits 74.2 percent from the free-throw line as a team, fifth-best in the league. Junior Cenia Hayes leads the team in nearly every statistical category, ranking in the top 20 in the MIAA in seven different categories. She averages 15.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.5 steals while hitting 84.3 percent from the free-throw line.

HAYS – The TMP girls and boys basketball teams earned a doubleheader
sweep of the Stockton Tigers on senior night Friday at Al Billinger Field House
in Hays.

Girls: TMP 64, Stockton 45 The TMP Lady Monarchs jumped out to an early 11-3 lead and
led wire-to-wire on their way to a 64-45 win Friday.

Kyleigh Allen scored a pair of three-point plays in the
first quarter as TMP races out to an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Monarchs build a 12-point second quarter lead at 23-11on
an Allen three that capped off a 12-3 run. TMP finished the quarter on a 12-0
run and led 35-14.

TMP led by as much as 25 points on several occasions in the
third quarter, led 50-30 through three quarters and went on to the 64-54 win.

Allen led TMP with 13 points for TMP. Emilee Lane added 11
points. Jaci VonLintel also finished with a career-high 11 points for the
Monarchs.

Stockton’s Chloe Plummer finished with 14 points.

Boys: TMP 74, Stockton 51 The TMP boys scored the first seven point of the game on a
Ryan Stoecklein three pointer and back-to-back Carson Jacobs field goals. The
second a one-handed fast break jam.

TMP led by as many as nine at 11-2 in the first quarter but
Stockton closed the gap to 11-8 after one quarter.

Stockton tied the game sat 15 in the second quarter but TMP
answered with a 9-2 run capped by a Lucas Lang three pointer to put TMP up 24-17.
Every time that TMP tried to pull away from Stockton in the second quarter the
Tigers clawed back into the game. Late in the first half they got back within
three at 28-25 but Lang knocked in his second three of the quarter to put TMP
up 31-25 at the break.

In the third quarter TMP was able to stretch the lead to double-figures
four times down the stretch, twice on Lang three pointers and the final time
Brady Kreutzer hit a half-court shot at the buzzer putting TMP up 54-39.

TMP opened the fourth quarter on a 14-5 run and led 68-44. TMP
went on to the 74-51 win.

Carson Jacobs tied a career-high with a game-high 20 points
for TMP. Lucas Lang chipped in a career-high 16 points and Mason Robbins added
12.

Stockton’s Ethan Means led all scorers with 27 points.

TMP improved to 14-4 and 7-1 in the MCL with the win.

The Monarchs will travel to Plainville on Tuesday.

A strong first half was undone by a cold shooting second half as the Hays High Indians fall short to Garden City 54-38 on Friday night.&nbsp; Aleyia Ruder scored the Indians first nine points of the night and pushed Hays out to a 9-2 advantage.&nbsp; Tasiah Nunnery scored the next 10 points for Hays taking the lead back from Garden City at 19-18.&nbsp;

The two team swapped the lead during the second quarter with the Buffaloes leading at half time 24-22.&nbsp; The Indians shot nearly fifty percent at half time but could not keep the pace.&nbsp; Garden City did keep their shooting sharp and built up a double digit lead on a 16-5 third quarter.

Hays did have an opening in the fourth quarter but made just three of eleven free throws in the final five minutes and two of ten shots.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nunnery finished the night with 15 points while Ruder added 13.&nbsp; Garden City's Keyhanna Turner scored a career high 21 while freshman Amaya Gallegos scored 13.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays falls to 5-13 on the year and 1-6 in the Western Athletic Conference.&nbsp; Garden City moves to 10-9 and 4-3.
