There are formations, personnel groups and even verbiage to learn when you report to training camp under Chiefs coach Andy Reid

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The scene plays out on playgrounds across the country each year, as much a part of autumn as crisp mornings and the changing color of leaves: the&nbsp;<a href="https://abcnews.go.com/alerts/NFL" target="_blank">football</a>&nbsp;floating through the air, the youngster attempting to make a spectacular diving catch.

Even if the pass is well under-thrown or woefully out of reach.

After all, there are style points involved.

That unnecessary drama doesn't fly under Chiefs coach Andy Reid, though. The moment he sees a player on the ground, whether he made an amazing catch or tripped over his own feet, the first thing he barks is: “Get up!” Because one of the unwritten rules of his workouts is that nobody hits the turf unless he is tackled, and only a handful of times throughout training camp are players taken all the way to the ground during a full padded practice.

“We try to keep bodies off the ground, do those things that are important," Reid said. "Play hard, play fast, but we're not taking cheap shots on each other. We're trying to keep from collisions and bodies on the ground.”

The reason, of course, is that staying upright reduces the chances of injuries. And without offseason workouts because of the&nbsp;<a href="https://abcnews.go.com/alerts/Coronavirus" target="_blank">coronavirus</a>&nbsp;pandemic, the chance of players getting hurt in training camp this year has soared — a big reason why the NFL and its players' union negotiated a ramp-up period rather than playing the traditional four preseason games.

“If you just watch our veterans practice," Reid explained this week, “they know how to do it. So watch. They're moving like crazy, but you don't see guys flopping around on the ground.”

All of this gets to a prescient point: Just as much as picking up the playbook, understanding verbiage and parsing out the various personnel groups, players taking part in one of Reid's camps must learn how to practice.

They must re-learn how to do something most of them have been doing since they were kids.

“Nobody works as hard as the Kansas City Chiefs. I say that in a good way,” Pro Bowl safety Tyrann Mathieu said. “We strain a lot. There's a lot on our plate. A lot of playbook to go in. The calls are already up. You just have to find a way to fall in love with the grind. Fall in love with the process.”

Just about every coach likes to claim their training camps are the hardest. It's almost a point of pride, whether you are a junior high school coach or barking orders on an NFL sideline. But there is a major difference in being hard for the sake of being hard and being hard for the sake of effectiveness.

There is no wasted movement in Chiefs camp. There are no moments of milling around. Even when players are released to get water, they are expected to run. The result is more work accomplished in less time.

It can be a shock to the system. Especially for young players.

“Last year in camp my eyes were wide open, like deer-in-the-headlights,” admitted Darwin Thompson, who is entering his second year in the league. “This year I know what to expect.”

Not that it makes it a whole lot easier. Thompson and the rest of the Chiefs dutifully worked out individually throughout the summer, making the most of the situation caused by COVID-19. But there is no way to replicate the tempo of practice with Big Red running things, and there are inevitably a bunch of gassed world-class athletes by the end.

“Normally if guys practice fast they stay relatively healthy,” Reid said. “It's when someone isn't doing that, they trip over somebody and fall down and you have problems. It's important guys are moving at the same speed. And then it gets you prepared. We don't condition after practice. We're not lining up and running sprints. Condition during practice, we'll keep you watered down — we're not doing the no-water game. But we know that in games you have to be ready.”

Taken as a whole, practice under Reid is a mixture of the old-school stuff of Bill Walsh and Mike Holmgren — two of his mentors — and the new-age approach to analytics, advanced statistics and cutting-edge sports medicine.

The Chiefs use technology to monitor how many steps players take in practice, along with their overall work rates. They scrupulously break down the film of each workout, leaving no movement unnoticed.

“Those boys working in Seattle, no question, it's different, from the tempo to the speed,” said safety Tedric Thompson, who played for the Seahawks last season. “The tempo is so up-tempo. You're running one spot to the other. Guys are going busy going about their business. The camp is like a workaholic camp. Everybody works.”

The proof is in the — well, the wins and losses. Several of the guys on the roster have been part of four consecutive AFC West champions. Even more of them have been to back-to-back AFC title games. Those that were on the team last year will soon be receiving their gaudy Super Bowl rings after delivering the organization its first championship in 50 years.

“Coach Reid is a winning coach,” backup quarterback Chad Henne said, “and guys want to be around winning atmospheres. The Super Bowl helps, but when you're around guys that want to compete each and every day, and fight for each other, it is something you want to be part of. I've been through ups and downs, winning and losing. Winning is the way to go.”

Chiefs' Tyreek Hill leaves practice with hamstring injury

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Trevor Bauer pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Kansas City Royals 5-0 on Wednesday night to split a doubleheader marked by strong starting pitching.

In the opener of the two seven-inning games, Brad Keller didn't allow a hit until the sixth and extended his shutout streak, leading the Royals past the Reds 4-0.

Bauer allowed only a single by Adalberto Mondesi in the fifth inning. He walked three and struck out nine, lowering his ERA to 0.68. He has allowed two runs on eight hits in 26 1/3 innings this season.

After Brett Phillips lined out to right to end the game, Bauer unbuttoned his jersey to reveal a T-shirt depicting him amid a low point in his career, a meltdown during his previous visit to Kauffman Stadium last July. Bauer threw the ball over the center field wall as Cleveland manager Terry Francona approached the mound to remove him from his last game before the Indians traded him way.

Before the game, the outspoken right-hander tweeted that he would wear cleats featuring the phrase "Free Joe Kelly" and an image of the Dodgers reliever, who was suspended for throwing near the heads of Houston batters. Kelly's suspension was reduced from eight games to five on appeal.

Bauer, however, did not appear to wear the cleats on the mound.

In his first major league start in more than a year, Matt Harvey (0-1) threw 54 pitches in three innings and allowed two homers, both in the third. He gave up three runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Bauer silences Royals in nightcap, Reds cruise to victory

Keller (3-0) has won all of this starts this season after coming back from a positive test for COVID-19 and hasn’t permitted a run in 17 2/3 innings.

Pitching in seven-inning game, Keller held the Reds without a hit until Tucker Barnhart looped a single into center field to begin the sixth.

“He was special,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “I think he got into a rhythm where his breaking ball was just as good as his fastball was. He had his fastball going to both sides of the plate. He had it cutting at times and had good sink when he needed it.

“He wasn’t afraid to go to the changeup. He got a strikeout with it. He keeps building his confidence with all his different pitches, instead of just trying to overpower guys.”

Cincinnati played for the first time since Friday night. The Reds had home games against Pittsburgh called off Saturday and Sunday after a player tested positive for the coronavirus, and the series opener at Kauffman Stadium was postponed Tuesday night while Major League Baseball did additional testing.

Keller gave up three hits, struck out five and walked Jesse Winker three times — his only walks in 6 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old righty exited with two on and Trevor Rosenthal retired the only batter he faced for his sixth save.

“Honestly my slider was pretty good today,” Keller said. “I was able to locate it on the back door to a lot of lefties. Their whole lineup was all lefties. To have that pitch and steal some strikes and get some swings, that was huge.”

Keller missed the start of the regular season as he built up strength after his positive virus test during summer training. But once he was activated, he has been nearly flawless. He pitched five scoreless innings against the Chicago Cubs in his first start, followed by six shutout innings at Cincinnati in his last outing.

Luis Castillo (0-3) allowed three earned runs in 3 1/3 innings, striking out five.

The Royals scored three times in the first after leadoff man Whit Merrifield reached on first baseman Joey Votto’s error. Jorge Soler hit an RBI double and Ryan O’Hearn snapped an 0-for-10 slump with a two-run single.

With the exception of Winker, who came into the game hitting .586 (17 for 29) in his last 10 games, no Reds player reached base until Barnhart’s single.

Reds: Former Royals star Mike Moustakas returned to the lineup after being sidelined by a quad strain since Aug. 4. The infielder started the first game as the designated hitter.

Royals: C Salvador Perez was held out of the first game with recurring symptoms from fluid in his left eye. He missed Sunday’s game, but was in the starting lineup Monday in Minnesota. He came out of that game as blurry vision worsened. He’s listed as day-to-day.

The Reds placed CF Nick Senzel on the injured list for undisclosed reasons. He missed time earlier this year because of symptoms of COVID-19.

The Royals reinstated RHP Jesse Hahn from the paternity list and designated him as 29th player for the doubleheader.

Reds: Will send RHP Sonny Gray (4-1, 2.05 ERA) to the mound in the series opener Thursday in St. Louis. He’ll be facing Adam Wainwright (2-0, 1.64) for the Cardinals.

Keller shuts down Reds, Royals open doubleheader with win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City Chiefs will have to start off their title defense without a key member of their defense.

Starting cornerback Bashaud Breeland has been issued a four-game suspension by the NFL for violating the league's policy on substance abuse, he confirmed Wednesday.

Breeland issued an apology in an Instagram post.

"I accept full responsibility for my actions, and I look forward to getting back on the field with my teammates to defend our Super Bowl Title," he wrote.

Breeland already had been facing a four-game ban for a separate violation of the substance abuse policy prior to his April 28 arrest in South Carolina, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported earlier.

Breeland was arrested on charges of resisting arrest, transporting alcohol with the seal broken in a motor vehicle, open container of beer or wine in a motor vehicle, possession of 28 grams or less of marijuana or 10 grams of hash and driving without a license, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspension would put Breeland out for the team's season opener at home on Sept. 10 against the Houston Texans as well as contests against the Los Angeles Chargers, Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots.

The Chiefs acknowledged throughout the offseason that a suspension was possible, but coach Andy Reid said he would reserve judgement until the legal process played out.

“We’re just going to let the law enforcement part of it take its course. Let’s see exactly what went on,” Reid said in May. “I know there is video out there. I’ve seen the video. I’ve talked to the kid. Let’s find out what the pace of this was and what caused everything to take place. I’m curious to see that part, as we all are, and then we’ll evaluate it from there.”

Breeland was among three individuals witnessed by a deputy smoking in a parked car at a gas station, according to the incident report from York County. The report stated that when a sheriff’s deputy attempted to speak with Breeland, the player continued to resist and the officer took out his taser. Breeland then pushed the deputy and attempted to get back into his car, at which point the officer drew his weapon and ordered him to put up his hands.

Breeland was handcuffed and arrested. A search of his vehicle found an open container of alcohol and a bag of marijuana, the report said, and a search of his phone found several communications about purchasing marijuana.

Breeland acknowledged to the deputy that he was a “marijuana enthusiast,” the report said.

A six-year veteran, Breeland signed with the Chiefs in 2019 and started 15 games for Kansas City. He recorded two interceptions in the regular season and one in the Chiefs' Super Bowl LIV victory over the San Francisco 49ers. He re-signed with the Chiefs on a one-year, $4.5 million contract this offseason.

Wichita City League schools have canceled all non-league games and will play a league-only schedule for fall sports in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

GWAL athletic director J Means told the Wichita Eagle that a decision&nbsp;whether to play any games is coming Thursday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The decision leaves Hays High with two less football games.

The Indians were to open their season September 4th at
Wichita East then host Wichita Northwest October 23rd. 

The decision does not affect Hays High's game game at Maize South on October 15th since they are not in the Greater Wichita Athletic League.

Tuesday's decision by the GWAL leaves other WAC teams without games.

Dodge City lost three games and now has only one scheduled through their first four weeks of the season. Liberal lost three and Garden City lost two.

Kansas State announces ticket options for 2020 football season

HAYS – The reality of no traditional fall football season is
starting to sink in for Fort Hays State head football coach Chris Brown. And
while he would rather be preparing his team for a big season opening showdown
with Northwest Missouri State, the Tigers 10th year head coach knows Friday’s
decision by the MIAA to suspend all fall sports until January 1st is probably
the right decision.

“It’s really about the safety of our players and the safety
of our coaches and even the fans that come and watch us.” Brown said Tuesday in
an interview for the “Defend the Fort” Podcast.

“It’s a part of the life that we live right now. It’s
adversity, and we try to teach our players to overcome adversity and that’s
exactly what we’re going to do right here.”

When the NCAA canceled Division II fall sports championships
several weeks they also changed many of their health standards and protocols
from recommendations to requirements. And while playing this fall was left to
each conference, the new requirements were impossible for more small schools to
meet.

Some of the requirements have been eased making practice
this fall much more likely. 

Brown knows his team will still have to meet both the NCAA
and local health standards but is eager to get his team back on the field in
any capacity.

“There’s no doubt in my mind we’re going to find a way to
get these kids better.” Brown said. “It might be more Zoom meetings but we’re
going to learn our offense, we’re going to learn our defense and we’re going to
learn our special teams and our kids are going to get better through this
process.”

Brown guided the Tigers to back-to-back MIAA titles in 2017
and 2018 and trips to the playoffs both seasons then followed that up with an 8-3
campaign last year. Now he’s hoping a global pandemic doesn’t slow the momentum
they’ve gained.

“It’s different, but we’ve got to make the most of this
situation and look at it as a positive light and go forward. We’ve got to
continue to work. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. Life threw us a curve ball
and we’ve got to hit it out of the park and get this thing done.” Brown said.

As for the possibility of playing in the spring, Brown says
he keeps going back and forth.

“I want to do what’s best for the kids and if I can get our
seniors an extra year to play all 11 games and have a chance at the playoffs
that’s what I’d really like to do.”

“Maybe this spring we’re able to do some scrimmages or
something like that against some other teams but not count against us for the
season, or do we just to do two spring balls, one in the fall and one in the
spring and get ready for the (2021) fall.

Brown tries to stay positive despite no football season

MINNEAPOLIS -- Nelson Cruz homered twice, continuing his climb up the all-time leaderboard, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 on Monday night.

Devin Smeltzer (2-0) picked up the win in relief of opener Matt Wisler for Minnesota. Smeltzer allowed one hit in 2 2/3 innings while striking out three batters. The Twins won three of four games in the series after being swept by the Royals in Kansas City last week.

Rookie Kris Bubic (0-3) surrendered two runs on four hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings for the Royals. Hunter Dozier homered in the ninth inning to end Minnesota's shutout bid.

Cruz supplied all the offense the Twins needed while continuing his assault on Kansas City pitching and the record books.

The 40-year-old slugger led off the fourth inning with a line drive that hit the facing of the second deck in left field. In the seventh, he connected for his eighth of the season into the bullpens in left-center field.

Cruz surpassed Duke Snider and tied Mark Teixeira with his 409th career homer, good for 55th all-time.

In his past 16 games against the Royals, Cruz is hitting .482 with 13 home runs and 26 RBI.

Bubic had held up in his first two major league starts this season, but he's now allowed seven runs over 9 1/3 in his past two starts.

Royals: C Salvador Perez returned to the lineup after missing a game with blurry vision in his left eye. Perez met with an eye specialist on Monday morning and Matheny said a small pocket of fluid was found in the eye. Perez was told he could keep playing with no risk and the spot will eventually dissipate. He was replaced at catcher by Meibrys Viloria after his at-bat in the sixth.

Twins: 3B Josh Donaldson has shown steady improvement with his right calf strain, according to the team. Donaldson did machine cardio work on Monday, took ground balls and has continued to take batting practice and work in the batting cage. The team said Donaldson feels good and is without issue. . Manager Rocco Baldelli said that LHP Rich Hill is likely to pitch in the upcoming series against Milwaukee and the team hasn't announced a starter for Wednesday, but Baldelli was cautious to state outright that Hill would start that game. Hill has been out since Aug. 31 with left shoulder fatigue.

Royals: Kansas City returns home for two games against Cincinnati, which had its weekend series postponed after a player tested positive for COVID-19. Royals manager Mike Matheny said before Monday's game that the expectation is the series is still on as scheduled. RHP Brad Keller (2-0, 0.00 ERA) is slated to start Tuesday's game for Kansas City. He's thrown 11 scoreless innings in two starts this season.

They join junior quarterback Dylan Dreiling who committed to Tennessee for baseball before his freshman year of school.&nbsp;

The Indians do return a deep set of talent for 2020, Tony Crough’s team has some questions to answer. Who will fill in the offensive line after multi-league selection Luke Fletcher graduated and is playing at Butler Community College. Brock Lummus also was a starter on the o-line and is at Butler to play baseball.&nbsp;

The Indians also need to find a kicker after Matt Goodale provided a late season boost.&nbsp;

HHS holds first football practice Monday night

HAYS - Twenty-six players took part in the first practice of the season for the TMP-Marian football team Monday.

The Monarchs and second year coach Jay Harris are coming off a 3-6 season 2019 campaign.

TMP returns seven players who started on offense last year including their leading passer and rusher, sophomore quarterback Kade Harris. 

Harris amassed 1,349 total&nbsp; years and 16 touchdowns in 2019.

The Monarchs also return leading receiver, junior Jace Wentling who hauled in 19 receptions for 333 yards and four touchdowns last season.

While TMP also return seven players who started on defense in 2019 they have to replace their leading tackler from a season ago.

Harris, who was a second-team All Mid-Continent League defensive selection finished with 69 tackles last season.&nbsp;

The Monarchs, in their second year as a 2A school, in football, will have six new opponents on the schedule. As a member of 2A district 7, they will play Cimarron, Ellis, Southwestern Heights, Lakin and Syracuse.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Chiefs announced Monday that fans will be welcomed back to Arrowhead Stadium this season.

Working with the National Football League, Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas and Kansas City, Missouri, Health Department Director Dr. Rex Archer, the team said it will welcome roughly 16,812 fans, or roughly 22 percent of Arrowhead’s capacity.

"We may be able to stay with this, or we may find we can’t do this," Archer said, "but we felt that because it’s outdoors and we could get people separated enough. We thought it was worth trying."

Due to the reduced number of tickets, the club plans to make available single-game tickets to the club’s first three home games starting on Aug. 24. Season ticket members will have the ability to purchase tickets in order of their tenure.

Monday’s announcement includes the season-opener Sept. 10 against the Houston Texans, Oct. 4 against the New England Patriots and Oct. 11 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The team said it will work with health officials as the season continues.

Season ticket holders who order tickets will be notified via email with additional information. The team said tickets will be sold in pods of seats, with as many as six seats per pod available in the online process.

According to Archer, every three rows will remain empty.

"I am concerned about shouting because we do know with singing and shouting the virus can move farther than with normal speech," Archer said. "That is why we are pushing it a little more than six feet in most exposures so we can protect people from the shouting risk."

Fans will be required to attend with known guests within the purchased pod. Any tickets that remain after they’ve been offered to season ticket holders would be offered to Jackson County residents.

Fans will be required to wear a mask at all times except when eating or drinking. The team will require fans to bring their own mask. Fans that attend the first three games will receive a commemorative Chiefs mask.

Fans will not be allowed to bring in bags, including previously approved clear bags. Smoking, vaping or spitting (including the use of sunflower seeds) will be prohibited.

Outside the stadium, the team will allow tailgating, but all parking passes must be purchased ahead of time. Only ticket holders will be allowed into the parking lots. Fans can only tailgate with those in their seating pod, and fans will be “encouraged” to wear masks in the parking lot.

Guests will see physical distancing measures in seating areas and other places where lines tend to form.

The team plans to provide enhanced “cleaning and sanitation measures,” which will include high-touch areas before, during and after the game.

Staffers entering the stadium will be required to complete a questionnaire and undergo a temperature check. All staff will be “directed” to wear personal protective equipment.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State received approval on Monday from the Riley County Commission to open Bill Snyder Family Stadium to approximately 25 percent capacity this fall for Wildcat football games.

During a work session at Monday’s meeting, commissioners reviewed K-State’s plan to open the stadium at a reduced capacity, which includes new protocols – including the requirement that all fans must wear face coverings and that no tailgating be permitted – which will be implemented to provide the safest environment possible under guidelines pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic. The commissioners voted to modify proposed Health Order #18 to remove a provision that prohibited facilities above a capacity of 2,000 from opening.

“We are appreciative of the consideration the commissioners gave to all facets of our plan and their ultimate endorsement,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said. “Our plan is very detailed in how we intend to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 spread at a football game. We are implementing several new policies and will be strict in our enforcement in our best efforts to accomplish playing football games safely,” Taylor added.

Meanwhile, Taylor said the department has developed new ticket options that will be unveiled to season ticket holders this week. Following are the new guidelines and safety measures that will be in place for the 2020 season: Face Coverings In accordance with City of Manhattan ordinance and Kansas State University policy, fans must wear face coverings over their mouths and noses in order to enter Bill Snyder Family Stadium and continue wearing them inside the stadium where 6-foot social distancing cannot be maintained. Fans should provide their own face coverings; K-State will not provide face coverings.&nbsp;&nbsp; No Tailgating Tailgating will be prohibited in parking lots controlled by K-State Athletics and satellite lots operated by Kansas State University groups in order to reduce the risk of large gatherings. Already with holes at cornerback, the Chiefs are down three promising options after Alex Brown tore his ACL on Saturday and Lavert Hill and Antonio Hamilton were held out Sunday. Hamilton has a groin strain and Hill a hamstring injury.

Two other crucial pieces to their Super Bowl run last season are also out. Left tackle Eric Fisher sustained a concussion and is going through the league’s protocol, while wide receiver Sammy Watkins has been slowed by a groin strain.

“The soft tissue (injuries) are the same as it is every year,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “You get into that third and fourth practice and guys are sore, normally in the groin area. That’s how it works. So we’re still dealing with that now, and it’s right about the same number as we have every year, so it hasn’t been anything crazy.”

One of the big concerns among players after missing summer workouts because of the coronavirus pandemic was the risk of injuries early in training camp. That is a big reason why their union negotiated with the NFL to cancel preseason games and implement a slow ramp-up period where players can become more accustomed to game speed before the season.

“We try to keep it as fast as we can so you get some form of evaluation of the guys,” Reid said. “You don’t have that game part of it, but you’re not going to be able to get that either. But you know, how we do practice and how fast we go, you see how guys compete. There’s enough competition on both sides.”

The Chiefs will step back after three consecutive days in pads with a lighter, high-tempo workout on Monday.

While the number of injuries may be the same as a regular training camp, the fact that three have occurred to defensive backs competing for a roster spot is a concern. The Chiefs lost nickel back Kendall Fuller to the Washington Redskins in free agency, and cornerback Bashaud Breeland is facing a potential suspension from the NFL due to off-the-field issues.

That leaves the Chiefs with burgeoning star Charvarius Ward and a bunch of relative unknowns. Dobnak, the surprise right-hander who was promoted four levels last season before making a postseason start, continued his impressive run in 2020 with two runs allowed, both on solo homers, in 5 1/3 innings. Dobnak (4-1) gave up just three hits, while his ERA rose from a majors-best 0.90 to 1.42.

''This is just more of what we've seen,'' Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. ''We've seen great outing after great outing.''

Alex Avila doubled, walked twice and scored a pair of runs for Minnesota, which has won four of six after being swept in Kansas City last week. Sergio Romo&nbsp;collected his third save.

Rookie Brady Singer&nbsp;(1-2) allowed three runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings for the Royals. Hunter Dozier and Alex Gordon&nbsp;each hit solo home runs to give Kansas City a 2-0 lead after two innings.

After the game ended, the Royals bench was visibly upset and third base coach Vance Wilson was pointing and yelling. Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said the Twins were taunting his ball club, and some Royals took offense.

''I think what you're seeing is the result of being able to hear everything each bench says,'' Matheny said. ''Can't take emotions out of this game either and a little taunting to our sides and the boys didn't like it a whole lot.''

Dobnak was undrafted, pitched in an independent league and was an Uber driver before his 2019 breakout. He entered Sunday's game with just two runs allowed in 20 innings this season and had given up just one home run in 48 1/3 innings in the majors.
